Fareed Zakaria on Life After the Pandemic

"For eads. Ikaria joins us now. His latest book is called ten lessons for post pandemic world for read. Thanks so much for being here. It's my pleasure pamela. I have to start with an obvious question just as someone who has a full time job you already have. I think three full-time jobs. As the host of a show on cnn n regular newspaper columnist writer. How in the middle of this pandemic when we're still in the throes of it. Did you go from reporting on sort of the world as it is and at the same time. Write an entire book about what comes after. It's a great question. And i marvel at it myself honestly looking backward but what happened. If you remember obama's in the first few months of the pandemic when the lockdowns began in such everything really shutdown all my travel or every lunch date every dinner date everything went silent and so i had a certain amount of free time and i was grappling with what was going on in the world. How the spend amick was affecting me how it was affecting people. I knew around the world and i started to jot down some thoughts about it partly for the columns and the and the show but then i found myself thinking bigger and i decided you know what i'm going to. I'm going to try and write something about this. And i'm going to do it in the following way. I would get up at six thirty or so. Every morning. And i wouldn't read the newspapers i wouldn't take wouldn't look at twitter. Nothing just to sort of keep my head space in that forward leaning fifteen thousand feet above the above the the land a space and right for about three hours and then i research a little bit. By eleven o'clock. I would get back to normal life and i would just get back to the show in the column and you know my kids who also there with me so i did that for four and a half months every day and weekends included and so what ended up being this incredibly cathartic way from me to deal with covid. Nineteen the pandemic because it made me. It forced me to think through in process what was going on and now look back and think i wouldn't have been able to do it any other period because few months into the maybe three months into it by by june july things that started to come back to normal and now i find my schedule as crowded as it was but there was that four month window and i think just as luck would have it. I took advantage of it. So your mornings were thinking about the future and then you kind of fell back to the present come late morning early afternoon pretty much once my kids would get up and start getting breakfast and things like that by then you know through the reality of life intruded so directly and viscerally that i couldn't i couldn't avoid it so i mean it's interesting because what you were doing really was thinking you know at least two beats into the future we were just getting into the pandemic and then you have to think about. How are we going to get out of the pandemic and then another step from there and so. I'm curious what your process was in in terms of trying to get that far ahead of something. That was already moving very quickly. So i i had to study the science of it to understand how likely it was. We were going to get out of it. And what i came to conclude was that while the public health response that we had seen in the first phase of the crisis was going very badly. There was going to be a second phase of the crisis that was largely private sector lead. That was therapies vaccines. That was likely to be extremely successful. And so i felt as though dependent mc was already changing the way we were thinking about the world and already changing behavior but the pandemic plus lockdown but that we will go to enter into a post pandemic phase. I will be honest. I didn't know whether it was six months later or a year later. But you could see if you studied the people who are doing the vaccines were incredibly bullish on their on their ability to get this done even within the first few weeks they were saying. We'll have something a year now to give people perspective of vaccine by which just ten or fifteen years ago if it can be made it all takes about fifteen years often so the fact that they was sure they could compress the timeframe so radically was a huge events in science that i don't think we've adequately understood but it gave me visibility on a post pandemic work

"All right. We're back and we're talking about the last movie and I just have a real dumb story to tell before we get back into the discussion because one of the things about this movie was that they shot this impro- of sweet mentioned several times, and they say that there was so many articles being written about it while it was being shot. They say that the elevation where they shot it was fifteen thousand feet. Now I went to pikes peak a few years ago, which is fourteen thousand feet, fourteen one hundred something. And obviously I wasn't at the very top of pikes peak, but I was pretty close where this train takes you up there. I don't know if you guys have ever experienced altitude sickness, but that was the most high literally and figuratively that I've ever been. I just was fucking wasted walking around felt like. The entire floor was at an angle and I'm just kind of moving along like feeling like when you get really high or drunk and you're just like, I hope nobody notices and it was the entire crowd. The everybody up there was like that. And we're just so even without the rampant use of cocaine and a little marijuana and and tons of booze and everything. I'm sure that so many people were fucked up even on the train ride back down. I was sitting there and and we're going back down and everything. And there was a girl in the seat across the way from me. And at one point she just slid right out of seat onto the floor because she was just so messed up. So I can't imagine making a movie anywhere near thirteen, fourteen fifteen thousand feet. I can't imagine what it was like doing that. Talk about weird conditionally they, they show you how to do. To Sobel his massive amounts of cocaine. Gets rid of that to Jude's Zik herreid away levels. He right by. I think clearly, you've, we now know that we need to organize screening this of this fifteen thousand feet somewhere with. We will do it. It'll be like those, you know, the secret underground Suman things where you have to climb the mountain for us. Then you have to go out into the wilderness and feed yourself, fine, drugs, Stahnke cold. Then we do this grinning and anybody who makes it through the night gets to be. The status all up. You got to be ritually killed it. He had to become Billy. So a few years ago before I don't even know if it was before the last movie was available on HSA think this might have been afterwards, but I was looking for a copy of the American dreamer because I had heard about it for so long, and it was just m I a couldn't get a copy of it whatsoever. And then someone and I won't say who it was, but someone sent me a copy because they're like, oh, this guy came in to our place, sorry to be shady, but I'm just going to be that way. Anyway. This guy came into our place with a sixteen millimeter copy of the American dreamer wanted transferred. I know that you were looking for this, so here's a copy of it on DVD are. So it was like, oh, okay, so I, I watched the American dream or even before I watched the last movie and it was a horrible print all pink and everything, but it's still, you know, just it was like watching you something that you shouldn't be watching and. My goodness. It's almost like with the last movie, there's almost more written about the last movie and documented about the last movie. Then the last movie itself. I mean, it's a, you know, an hour and a half or so..

"So I start hit fucking visual fast forward now, I'm sure at least you're staying hard at this point and pretty much. Yeah. How the wind and everything, right? It's called up there. Man like fifteen thousand feet is called as fuck she so so like so he visual fast forward. Now I'm jacking off to a fucking blow job in high speed. At that doesn't help at all. Then I'm like, fuck. I'm losing all my time. And I gotta take a gamble, amber. Fucking. Okay. Fuck it. I've roll the dice I hit skip track. Now. I'm fucking looking at the whole screen is this woman's asshole with the huge fucking but plug up in there and like you have a lot of things that my buff. Painful dude, who's my bone? Yeah. I don't have time I'm losing my boner is when I'm frantically screaming, love. Track, skipped track, skipped track your now. And the times is dwindling away, and I'm almost feeling like I'm just going to. I'm going to not pull it off and I hit skip track one time. And I see this big dick come out of the woman and in one fluid motion, it comes out of her ass hoisted up in the air over and down into her mouth and like just the pure joy on this woman's face. That connected with me. Why. And all of a sudden I'm like fucking doc Brown. At the end of back to the future part one. All what moody, fifty thousand. Together, dude, right, right. Kat. And fill out right as the lightning struck dude. I it all together. Not not. That is madness. And as far as a bit looking exactly the way that I pictured it, like that's the, you know, as far as like the lengths that it took to make it happen, like just how many, how much is involved, how how long was planned for how long in like it just it. Just we had a slow motion camera mounted to the fucking airplane, and I come right in right into it. My load caught the wind and it was splattered into a slow MO camera also what you just showed us. I mean, that is also incredible, but to seeing like it was imperative for me to still see blowed being shot as you were falling. Yeah. And you do. Right? My jab. Yeah. I mean, the first word is on the way out and the rest had cranked out in freefall even if I hadn't just seen you still tug at it as you're falling to me is almost like the Pat your head rub your stomach at the same time, then I don't know how you focus on both because I'm falling. I'm just so like I want all my wits about me. I don't wanna do anything to throw up the trajectory right or or the balanced, but like right, I mean, do they even say that when you even bring this up or you like you like is is joking off gonna like somehow pull us out of air pocket or I don't know. Is there some science to there wasn't like a, it's much safer, Clint then a guy doesn't right because the motion is less stressful for the air, right, free following you. You generate so much speed you're going so fast. Is the wind going to rip my dick off..

"Through, a ping pong ball to deliver these guys supplies and so on, in different parts of Afghanistan and I think I know the, anecdote you're talking about the there was nowhere to go to the bathroom except in receptacle yeah, like basically a plastic liter. Size bottle of of a soft drink and then they. Would freeze rock-hard at that altitude so you they would toss them out instead of, having rattling, around in the in the. In the, shift they would toss it out they, call the bebop cleaned up for for radio here At a also there were times when the, the people flying supplies to them were flying as high as fifteen thousand feet now for a, fixed wing aircraft that's not. No big deal for helicopters that's a really big deal Well they were yeah they were, they were pitching the supply drops you're. Done off of fixed wing At very high they, came down later but the helicopter pilots deserve their own book too I know some of those guys they were flying. If fifteen thousand feet with the ramp down and, with the auction supply to the masks malfunctioning often, so the guys, who go poxy on these journeys and then. When they would come down and land. They, of course, would, be a. Wide awake with the mission but. This was some treacherous heroic flying One eight six six five zero JIMBO is our number one eight six. Six five zero five, four six two six with the Doug Stanton now. Then why this particular special forces, group of course we've all heard of the seal team six there was chosen to take out bin Laden why did. These guys in the army untried as you say as a point force in a in a military, operation why were, they chosen to be the ones to lead. The first ground reply to bin Laden Well one of the what's called four small to pliers so a mighty group of. A small group of, a, few, makes a mighty force so they're. All cross trained a, medic can also use, the radio and their. Weapons guy knows how to. Do medicine so you don't need hundreds of them at. Least immediately now they were followed by other teams in this f. and. Other conventional units too but the first, boots, on, the, ground. Were these guys because they could move, shoot, and communicate in, sync, really, quickly, there a fascinating group and. It was not a direct action missions so? In other, words okay guys you job isn't go to Afghanistan knock on the door rushing and handcuff. Everybody and then we're gonna we're gonna rush them off the, job was to go in have t- talk negotiate reach? An agreement with these three separate tribes were fighting each other anyway get them to some concern Scent of a. Of a goal to, go, after, the Taliban and let's all go. Forward and do that, and so that's a, very different mission than. Say the conventional armies just..
