"On kind of two thoughts is if i do get mauled a mental. Let that bear. Have the backpack right if you can. I'm gonna try and roll over in the fetal position on the ground and hopefully one of the guys with me will come deal with the bear in i've seen is. They put their pistol on their hip of their backpack. That's fine but keep your backpack on it So on this bull. I'm getting a little nervous of you. Know haven't seen or heard these guys for about ten fifteen minutes. I know approximately. They've climbed up just to the cusp of the edge of the bench. Where that bowl was had gone the day before and i creeped up there and i moved. Probably that hundred and fifty yards silently over about fifteen minutes. And i got right behind him and changed the type in volume of bugle that we used and we bugle about like say or a hundred yards away from his bed and he came unglued. I quickly backpedaled about fifty yards and sidestepping up the drainage just a little bit so that i could shoot my call kind of downhill and around the hill from him instead of just straight at him so basically i'm calling one eighty from the bowl even though i'm that close and that bulk came on a string and he came right now and he came in about seventeen yards from the from the shooter and the day before when he is coming. The shooter was moving a little bit and the wind switch so he caught movement and he caught smell at about fifty yards this time. The shooter stationary and that bull thinks that. There's somebody coming to interrupt his naptime in his bedroom. And so that tactic of we were. I was two hundred and fifty. Three hundred yards away sounded like a bunch of elk. They'll call went quiet all sudden. There's an alka hundred yards away. Bow fifteen minute time span difference and like i said. We went from a high-pitched three note little locate bugle sounding like a livable with a few cows. Too deep guttural. Big bowl chuckling bugle and just. Basically said hey. I'm here to kick your butt. And he said oh yeah. I don't think so so it was made. It was intense going from when the bugles echoing at two or three hundred yards. It's like what we hear on tv. You know it's that wispy high pitch somewhat audible but when they're bugling at ninety yards patrick it. It's a intestinal bowel shaking. You feel it before you hear it. It's just that raw it's pretty powerful and intense. And if you haven't ever been it. Oh that close when bowl just screams at you. Hey you're in my space go away. That's it's an experience all of its own so what happened on. This bowl comes in on a string. Then what he came in straight out the the lose shooter I think seventeen yards and shooter sounds like he made. He was already drawback. Calm steady you know had ranged it. And the arrow just didn't hit the mark and that that frontal shot is. It's very lethal. I've been on a four frontal 's and you know it has to go where it's supposed to go and you're talking about a grapefruit sized target so it's not a thirty five or forty yard shot. It's ten to fifteen year shot. And what i found this year. Was you really need to pay attention to the back. Two feet in. Oh if you can see more of one of his hindquarters than the other. He's not straight enough on to take the shot and you need to just wait till he turns right or wait till he keeps coming pasture which is hard. It takes a lot of restraint when you're talking fifteen sixteen seventeen yards in. Oh but you can't wait and try and shoot. Wally worlds. which you're going to have to do is if you don't have that shot and it's not i mean he's basically got to come straight at you and the goal of this old game is to get them to actually come past the shooter right. They're coming to look at the caller and and you know. Meet up with these other elk. So the goal is hopefully if the winds right. And you've done everything right. He walked right past you. But it's l. cut and patrick. I mean it's you can't you can't predict any of it so you know it just didn't happen. We did get the air off the string. And that's it was it was there was a real high of. Hey we got a great shot on a great bowl and we're going to get this and then it went through the the finding the arrow and finding and track and i mean all ultimately till later afternoon going now. This is not gonna end the way we thought the story was. So you know. Definitely do and your deal due diligence. Broad heads need to be you know everybody talks about broad heads all the time all well. This and that. I mean shot. Placement vitally is more important than broad. Heads they need to be a equality brand quality construction. You're not gonna use broadhead us on white tail on. Elk it home some of those broad heads that they market a two and a half inch cut. You hit a big mon on and elkin. You're not going to have a blade left right but you also don't want to be shooting little half inch or three quarter inch inch and a half up to two inch. Cut good solid construction. Mechanical or fixed is fine but being accurate with them. I mean and that's that's more important because honestly you put you put arrow through both lungs. And they're not gonna live doesn't matter what brought you so. Tell me a little bit about the equipment. And i want to talk about both spider. I mean i'm sure you guys were rocking the boat spiders. You're doing this hunt so how. How integral was that to game plan and helping you do this haunt. We'll we talked about the snow in the day. It was snowing We were just hiking and bugling and hiking and bugle. And then i caught movement. Because it's you know the whole grounds covered with snow at about ninety yards running. Full talk trot at us in a a medium size. Five point was just coming full oncoming on. I still had bugle to. My bo is clipped on my bow spider. And the guys behind me commented. They were amazed at how fast that bo was off. My back arrow knocked and full draw because at bowl full trot at ninety he came in and stopped at about forty eight yards. Just because the way the terrain was i was in the saddle. He was coming to the saddle. He got to the saddle where he could see where he heard that elk. And we found his tracks he'd been running trotting downhill for about five hundred yards in. That snow never made a peep never knew he was coming nothing. So i made the comment to the guys. I said you know yachts. It's my companies my product. I should be using it. But dang i love this bow spider right because it's i'm to the point. Now it's either my hip or on my back on my pack and my bow comes off when i need it and the rest of the time know when i did fifty percent calling and fifty percent hunting half the time i was shooter half the time i was the collar and i had my opportunities and it was a great season was probably one of the best. As far as elkin counters elk activity. Part of it was like i said i just. We probably got up a half hour earlier every day. We are a little bit smarter about where we went playing the wind. I wasn't always pushing ten miles deep every day. A couple of days we went on a normal david walkabout and he asked my hunting partners with that. Is david just kinda puts the afterburners on and want to see what's over the next ridge but there's a lot of days. We descript meadow and chilled out and got into quite a few elk. So that bo spider honestly patrick. I mean we're talking. You do an average of ten miles a day some days twelve. Some are only eight. Like i said just because we we played it. Cool this year but.

"You had much more to lose by missing then you did in the fake punt situation and the fake punt offered more upside In that was making it to sort of regain Where you were any more downside because where it was on the field that's true that's true And that's what made it risky. You know 'cause if the balls at the Kansas City the forty five yard line I might think about going for it on fourth and three or four thousand four. Although I wouldn't have in that spot I would've I would've definitely punted These special teams James Place. In the first half the blocked punt return the muffed punt recovered the big kickoff return by Coleman at twenty four. Nothing huge plate the chiefs stop on the fake punt. That we're we're just talking about then. The fumbled kickoff return at twenty four to fourteen. My God have you ever seen so many impactful special teams plays in one half of football football. I mean everything about that first half was just like have you ever seen this. I mean and then mahomes gets on a roll in Houston. Couldn't can stop 'em in the Houston lost. What's his face in secondary and that hurt him a little bit and it just was an onslaught? The funny thing about that game is at halftime. I I didn't think Houston was out of it down four down four. Of course he they're not out of it score wise but the momentum it turned they missed the field goal at the end of the half to that would have made it twenty eight twenty seven even I just felt like Houston could move the football. You know what I mean like I. I never thought when when you when you're watching a game like that and you feel like the other team in Kansas City has a really good defense and Houston's not gonna be able to move the ball to possess the ball to score with the ball then you don't think they have a chance after they've given up twenty eight unanswered but the thing about that game is I felt like Houston would be able to move the ball and score points in the second half. And they they had the one touchdown drive at forty one twenty four to get it to a forty one thirty one And then they moved the ball. You know the other portions of the second half two but just could not close the deal and it just got outta hand because Kansas City scored onset court scored touchdowns on seven consecutive possessions. Most most in in postseason season history. They scored points on eight consecutive possessions. They had a field goal in that last one They're the first team in the NFL playoff history to a trail by at least twenty points and then win by at least twenty points in the same game and if you had Houston plus ten like I did a boy 'cause up twenty afforded nothing you know that's one of those conversations Aaron. I know you've thought about this before. Damn I should've put more on this game. You you know Damn I love Houston today plus them. Why didn't I bet more on this game? Well you know the good thing. You didn't anyway They scored so fast and furious in that first half that it was literally like a a long version of the Tomahawk Chop chant. That just never seemed to stop which I just found really amusing because of course you know. We've had the conversation attention about the REDSKINS team name. And yet you know in Atlanta for the braves and in Kansas City for the chiefs and if Florida state seminole games they openly mock native native Americans with the Tomahawk Chop chant. It just it's hysterical to me that that never gets the attention that the REDSKINS name gets. But Anyway I digress the game to me that is the all time greatest. NFL postseason game. I've ever watched and was similar to yesterday's Game first-half wise. This is the chargers dolphins epic in Miami Game January of Nineteen Eighty two. The single most thrilling best played most dramatic. NFL playoff game for me. That's that's always been my number one January second nineteen eighty two chargers with Dan fouts outs. Kellen winslow West Chandler Charlie Joiner John. Jefferson wasn't on that team Against the dolphins who did not have Marino at that point and came off off the bench with Don Strock. Okay and San Diego got off to a twenty four to nothing for score leads it first quarter lead similar to the Houston thing twenty four. Nothing you think. The Games over and then the dolphins came back like the chiefs did not with twenty eight unanswered but was seventeen unanswered including a play at the end of that first half in the Orange Bowl that day the hitchin pitch where Striped roses dural Harris he catches it. Pitches it back to Tony Nathan on the final play. The first half Nathan takes it in places going nuts. It's twenty four seventeen at halftime. The dolphins are back in the game and the Dolphins actually scored after trailing twenty four to nothing thirty eight of the Games next forty five points points. You know not forty one in a row. Kansas City but thirty eight of the next forty five. The difference between that game in nineteen eighty two following the eighty one season in in yesterday's game is the second half of that game was just as good as the first half. The dolphins came back took the lead in San Diego came back tied it up. The game went to overtime and San Diego eventually won the game. Forty one to thirty eight in overtime and then the following week had to go to Cincinnati for The freezer bowl the minus fifty nine wind shield windshield game at Riverfront Stadium and lost the AFC title game to boomer size and and the bengals and that particular the team. Mickey Woods That team The bengals went onto the super bowl that year. Loss to the forty niners and that super bowl. I'm sorry that was not boomer assassin. Nikki Woods my fault. That's the Ken Ken Anderson Team Cincinnati team that won the freezer bowl over over the chargers The the the BENGALS got to the super double later that decade with boomer Esiason and Nikki Woods. That was Ken Anderson. Great Team That Cincinnati nearly beat the forty niners in that super bowl loss. Twenty six six twenty one anyway on. That was the game. It reminded me of in the first half. It didn't end up being the game that that game was because Kansas City. You know coasted in mahomes threw for five touchdowns in. I don't know that I've seen a better quarterbacking performance I've seen quarterbacking performances equal. What what mahomes did? I don't know if I've ever seen a better three-quarters by one quarterback than the three quarters that mahomes plate you all those balls dropped early in the game still threw for five touchdowns three hundred twenty one yards in basically three quarters sort of like two and a half quarters actually And any did it in so many different ways right the quick release the perfect accuracy. Deep Ball the short ball. The running I mean. How many times did we see mahomes? Get outside the pocket rolling rights. Still behind the line of scrimmage putting the defense do major conflict is he gonNA run is he going to throw and then all of a sudden he would just jaw Garin for like fifteen sixteen seventeen yards. You know the end up with fifty three yards rushing in the game almost all of them in the final two and a half to three quarters. I don't know it was one of the better quarterbacking performances I've seen. I mean he who is brilliant. I actually thought to Shawn Watson played well to But Houston defensively just could not get a stop at all and maybe they only needed one or two to but they didn't because Kansas City on eight consecutive drives score points on all of them The other thing mahomes did For those That that that we're watching this and heard about it mahomes tied Doug Williams for the greatest quarter. NFL postseason history. With four touchdown passes now the Doug Williams four touchdown down past his came in the Super Bowl and generated a lot more yardage than them homes. T- passes did in the second quarter I'm Doug Williams as part of that thirty five points on eighteen place for the Redskins in that Super Bowl win over Denver anyway. The chiefs get Tennessee. The titans are much better on defense than Houston is. And they're going to be able to run the ball against the chiefs so I do think. Tennessee has a chance at Arrowhead on Sundays. Seven and a half point. Underdog Doug and Tennessee's win came in Baltimore and we'll go to that game next In I mean it was really brilliant. The way they first of all you know frustrated Baltimore Baltimore you asked about the Minnesota game plan I think Baltimore went away from the run too early. You know panic addict. They panicked a little bit and got away from the run when now I know Tennessee was filling that box with eight nine players. I was watching the game. Okay and it but Baltimore has has run it down everybody's throat all year long. I did not think. Lamar Jackson had this horrific game. I I I really appreciated the the competitiveness that he had It's the fourth downs. You know that killed them you know the Fort Worth and one in the first half on their on their drive Down seven nothing and and then the fourth and one at fourteen to six on the first drive of the third quarter. You Know Baltimore still very much in this game. It's fourteen to six. They're on the move on with the second half kickoff. They're down inside the Tennessee twenty yard line in their face with a fourth and one and they didn't get it again and I just didn't love the play call and I haven't watched the ravens enough this year to know. Oh whether or not there was a lot of sort of quarterback you know power runs I'm sure there were that first. One though it seemed like Lamarcus lamarcus follow his blockers. It seemed like there was a hole in the second one looked turtles and then he turned it back in the other direction. Got Talking about the first one where it just kind of plows into the said the following right guard. Yeah he the second one would you know was bad too in. I would have loved to have seen him have a pitch option. There you know coming down the line But but anyway Baltimore's out. I mean Tennessee. You Know Derrick Henry Russia's for You know one hundred and ninety five yards on thirty carries. He's last week. He had one hundred and eighty two. I think it was against the Patriots on thirty four carries. I didn't even think he got enough. He got enough in this game and Tannehill another game under one hundred yards. It's passing and they win. I quarterback to win two playoff games with to Passing performances of of under one hundred yards since Terry Bradshaw with the steelers in the seventies. You got you know Ryan Tannehill the last two weeks I mean in two thousand twenty. NFL playoffs Last week he he's eight. Fifteen for seventy two yards touchdown and an interception and unsanitary ninety seven or fourteen for eight yards to see those quarterbacks stat outlines. You pretty much have to go back to the seventies to find him is you. Just don't see that anymore. You Know He. He's throwing twenty nine Pat. He's completed fifteen balls in two weeks his two week numbers or fifteen of twenty nine for a buck sixty. That's a game and sometimes that's not even a game but like I said last week taught tannahill played well despite the numbers I thought he played really. Well he had that you know after After the down stop in the first half he had the bomb for the touchdown in which is a great throw. Had A couple of other. You know Third Down Conversion plays. They were seven of thirteen on third down. The titans were They have the formula right. Now it's one of the formulas I don't like getting into this you know. There's only one formula to win January. That's not true. We've seen that over the years the Patriots of one at all sorts of different ways. You know But we do know this if you can run the football and play good defense you you have a chance in January on the road defense. Travels in a running game tends to travel and The the titans have that right now man and Kansas the city. I don't think they're very good. Defensively now are you going to be able to match Kansas City. We're thinking the same thing about Baltimore. Let's remember that you you know it's a different way to Baltimore. Scores a lot of points but they were scoring a lot of points. Not Getting stopped very much and Tennessee. Remember we talked about last week. They need to get ahead. They can't get behind..
