"Today we're talking about vaccines well. More specifically about the toll. The anti vaccine movement has taken on our public health. Let's start with some basics x one of the most successful public health interventions in human history. They've saved millions if not billions of lives. They protected generations of children in the us and around the world from deadly diseases and right now the surest path out of the covid nineteen pandemic is to vaccinate as many people in as many places as possible but that of course requires wide scale public trust and participation two things that the anti vaccine movement has been working really hard to undermine vaccine movement has been growing in darkness for decades and now they've captured the spotlight as an is fear uncertainty to so doubt and spread lies about the coupe nineteen vaccines their efforts have been amplified by public figures who used their platforms to elevate debunked conspiracy theories and all of this is made much much worse by lack of accountability from social media and technology platforms themselves. The nfl move hurting our ability to recover from this pandemic and it could affect which vaccines this generation of kids received well beyond covid nineteen. So what can we do. How do we fight. The powerful tide of disinformation that began long before this pandemic and has unfortunately gained momentum during it. How do we overcome mistrust around vaccines and help more. People get the facts that they need to make the right decisions for themselves and their families while to answer this questions. I'm talking with two people who are confronting these challenges head on later. We'll hear from my friend. Dr peter hotels vaccine researcher and advocate and co director of the center for vaccine development at texas children's hospital. But i i'm talking with heather. Simpson a mom who fell down the rabbit hole and then pulled herself back up. Heather is an activist a freelance writer and a mom to three year. Old daughter hers is a story of how effectively the anti vaccine movement entraps people and a reminder that it's possible if not always easy to change minds. I started our conversation by asking heather how she went from someone who had always gotten vaccinated then anti-tax social media influence my mom vaccinated all of ice. It wasn't until i was eighteen. I had the choice to get my meningitis shot. And i hate needles so on. That alone chose not to get it going in college which was stupid. I did get the tea dot in two thousand fifteen. I got the flu shot school. It wasn't until me and my husband really started trying to have our daughter that we were like Should we do the schedule. I mean we haven't given much thought. And a documentary series popped up on facebook as an ad and it was nine hours a just pure propaganda. It was doctor after doctor blaming everything under the sun on vaccines so by the time. You're done watching all nine hours of terror. You're not gonna wanna inject your kid. I mean i was terrified. I was thinking if we inject charlotte. She will die in her sleep that night. The strength of the fear that i had was so so strong i was ashamed a little bit a little bit embarrassed about it because my mom groups were so pro vaccine so it didn't really tell anybody but when she was about eighteen months old i decided to start talking about it casually on the internet on facebook and it just took off and i didn't realize that their birth thousands and thousands of antibodies mom's on facebook that had all found each other and that there's this huge huge growing community and they just accepted me as one of them and it just took off from there.

Camp Anneewakee: A Legacy of Child Abuse and Labour

"The physical labor was forced upon the girls at the rock mark campus. Just as it was the boys in douglasville caravel. A new campus had to be built. the rest of our day after breakfast we would work from probably eight thirty or nine until eleven thirty. I believe and we did various projects and all of them were very physical. Sometimes we would work on landscaping projects working with heavy wheelbarrows rakes shovels digging holes post hole. Diggers the hardest project. That i remember doing my first summer. We were building a campsite at the top of a very high ridge. We were hauling two by fours and a frames and shingles and bags of mortar and cement so at age fifteen they would have us bend over and they would put a bag of mortar on our back which weighed forty six pounds or a bag of cement on our back which weighed ninety four pounds and we were to hold and carry that bad of mortar or cement bent over up a mountain in order to make the footings for the cabins. The girls in my particular group were fourteen and fifteen years old. Maybe succeed years old. And i can't imagine how hard it must have been for the girls that were twelve and thirteen and this was the middle of the summer in a terrible heat wave and even though we were in the mountains it was very very hot temperatures well into the nineties sometimes up to a hundred girls were getting heat exhaustion and heatstroke and they would discourage us from sitting down and taking a break and drinking water. They would give us very very short breaks. We were not allowed to sit down and start working.

I'm flipping through the newspaper at the age of of nokia of having a single app. That does everything like snake. Was the only game you ever needed. So it's a logical process in the missiles space. You have created personal station. More Calls to Cancel Canada Day in Vancouver

"At least one. Large canadian city victoria has decided to cancel canada day celebrations on july. The first as dan carpenter reports the decision comes in the wake of the recent discovery of the remains of two hundred fifteen native children at the site of a former residential school in british columbia. Plans have now been shelled for the city on vancouver island to host a virtual candidate a celebration. The decision came after a unanimous. Vote by victoria city council. Instead officials say they will create a broadcast focused on the larger canadian history with guidance from local first nations. The broadcast will be released later in the summer. And focus on what it means to be canadian. Here's victoria mayor. Lisa helps right now. the likud nations are grieving And so it's very difficult for them to come and sing and dance and celebrate context change when those two hundred and fifteen children's bodies were discovered and and they are reeling and everybody is reeling. And so we're all just doing our best to figure out how to move forward. Some residents of vancouver island agree with the decision saying it might be best to cancel the celebrations this year and instead remember all residential school survivors and the victims. There have been similar calls across the country to cancel the national holiday celebrations. Many first nations held ceremonies to honor the two hundred fifteen children whose remains were discovered in may at the site of the former kamloops residential school for national native news. "The voice remote for comcast's we launched it in two thousand fifteen and really our goal is to be the ultimate shortcut to what you wanna watch So you can tap the microphone and say what you want to watch and it will appear That is our promise. And i think we come through on that promise so i think that is why. So many people do love the product They can just say and see it right on the tv so if you want to change channels you can say abc unable to you to abc. If you want to launch an app like netflix or pop you just say the name of the app and you launch You can even say things like continue watching outlander at all jumped you right into your resume point and start playing you In that content. Where you were where you left off. She didn't how many how many different ways Our our people asking to change the channel. Oh my goodness yeah well. We actually have done some analysis on that and People ask 'but just the channel cnn twenty four thousand different ways. It's kind of unbelievable. It was really the the most basic one. Cnn were right mind but if you say. Please play cnn or watch cnn and even cnn yellow it will work. And it'll to new and people do say those things. I know i think twenty four thousand just at that number just blew me away. But it really highlights the complexity underneath the covers with regards to Conversational interfaces and voice interfaces is just the sheer volume is you could never build a tree. A big enough to you know fast enough to do that. So the technology behind the scenes is is meeting huge challenges

How to Empower People to Solve Their Own Legal Problems

"Start by telling you a story about danielle. When she was a senior in college. Danielle's dad passed away which left her mom with no way to support herself so danielle had to drop out of college and pick up. Three jobs is a barista a bar. Tender nicole washer altogether three jobs pay danielle twenty three thousand dollars per year which wasn't a whole lot but allowed her to feed her mom and keep a roof over their head and for danielle. That was enough but early one morning when danielle was driving home from one of her jobs. A deer in front of her car. She swerved off the road and crashed into a bar. And then y'all doesn't remember exactly what happened next but when she woke up in hospital a few hours later a doctor told her that she had damaged her brain stem and c one vertebrae now. The good news is that danielle was gonna leave the hospital alive. The bad news is that danielle had fifty five thousand dollars in medical bills now. Did y'all tried so hard for the next two years to try and pay back that debt but it was impossible. It was impossible for danielle to pay back fifty five thousand dollars in medical bills. Earning just twenty three thousand dollars per year. She felt trapped. One freak accident put danielle on the verge of homelessness hunger poverty. And when you're in daniel shoes bankruptcy is a lifeline. It's a powerful legal tool that allows you to relieve your debt and reenter the economy medical emergency job loss divorce. These are financial shocks. That could happen to any of us and when you're living paycheck to paycheck and don't have a whole lot of savings like so. Many americans. a financial shock can ruin your life. Bankruptcy gives you a second chance. Then you'll want to go find a bankruptcy lawyer. She like so many others filing for bankruptcy learned that it was going to cost her fifteen hundred dollars. She can have that kind of money. I mean what a cruel irony in america it costs you fifteen hundred dollars to tell the court that you have no money when you walk into a court everyone from the judge clerk the form themselves will tell you to go find a lawyer no matter how little money you have

Fighting Sin by Obeying God With One Another

"Deuteronomy chapter nineteen verses. Fifteen a single witness shall not suffice against a person for any crime or for any wrong in connection with any offence that he is committed only on the evidence of two witnesses or of three witnesses shall charge be established so this picture and deuteronomy is describing how god is calling his people to carry out justice and specifically here to ensure that sufficient witnesses are brought forward to establish a charge. Now we can talk more about this context in deuteronomy chapter nineteen. But the reason. I wanna read verse. Fifteen here specifically and lead us to pray. According to it is because of the foundation this lays for something. Jesus later teaches in matthew chapter eighteen versus fifteen to twenty there when he talks about church discipline and accountability and he talks about how when a brother sends against you or we could use the same picture from glacial chapter six. When brothers caught in sin her sisters caught in center sisters sins against you. Then jia says go to that person just between you and that person and talk about this and seek reconciliation ultimately seek reconciliation between them. And god you want to call them away from sin and certainly secret any reconciliation. That's needed with them. Between you and that person but if that person she says refuses to listen to you what does he say he says matthew chapter eighteen verse sixteen but if he does not listen take one or two others along with you that every charge may be established by the evidence of two or three witnesses. And as soon as i say that you realize what jesus is saying they're in matthew. Chapter eighteen or sixteen is based completely on what we just read. And god's law in deuteronomy chapter nineteen verse fifteen

The Trial of Sacco and Vanzetti

"The crime itself took place on april fifteenth. Nineteen twenty a security guard named allesandro bernardini. And a paymaster named frederick param mentor were delivering the payroll for the slater. More shoe company factory in braintree massachusetts. The men were carrying two large steel boxes full of cash when they were approached by two men and shot dead in the street. The two men took the boxes of cash containing over fifteen thousand dollars and fled in a waiting car to make very long story short. The police suspected italian anarchist based on previous similar crimes. When running up a lead on the getaway car they found connections with people who had weapons that mashed the ones used in the crime. This led them to sako and vans. eddie when asked about guns. They said they never owned any yet. They were carrying firearms on their person at the time they were placed into custody and charged with murder on may fifth and the trial began june. Twenty second i'm vastly over simplifying the case at this point and how they were arrested but suffice to say they were arrested and this is where the real story starts. The trial was a mess on many different levels. The prosecution relied on ethnic differences between the italian defendants and the jurors. There were conflicting testimonies. The witnesses claimed that they saw different things and they had different stories for each defendant. There was conflicting ballistics testimony. The defendants politics were also brought into the trial to prejudice the jury against them. It was also brought forward that both men went to mexico. Nineteen seventeen to escape the draft for world war one. A defense committee was founded soon after their arrests. But they didn't really help during the trial vans eddie. At one point claim that their defense was so bad that they might as well have been working for the prosecutor's on september fourteenth. The jury took only three hours to find both men. Guilty of murder after the indictment. It's believed that the galliani organization began a bombing campaign in retribution in addition to a series of mail bombs sent to us embassies around the world. They were also responsible for the wall. Street bombing of september sixteenth. That bomb killed forty people and injured one hundred and forty three. It was the deadliest terrorist attack in american history up until that point at the same time of the trial. Most people in the country still hadn't heard of soko and vans eddie. The trial itself was really only reported on boston. It was only after the trial when the reports of how these men were treated were made public that the men became a cause celebre.

I guess we'll start by. Ask him what have you been up to. Since last time we talked just fokker obviously been playing a lot more live. Actually more live cash than Navy since last time we talked. We were smack dab dab in the middle of the most extreme part of the pandemic so had been kinda locked down stuck in the house Pretty much just playing online tournaments Every day trying to make sunshine's can have that feeling where online poker is so good that everybody was gonna allow these recreational players that were home because of covid. We're gonna run out of money soon. And some of the sites are kind of bleeding dry in my opinion with some of the schedule in guarantees everything. So that's kind of where it was dan a since then everything in vegas. Everything's opened up a whole lot. More and ton of people been here lately so given it was on the strip last night and just on a monday night was just pretty much packed. You know kind of back the old vegas so to speak so You know it's been really good but it it just pretty much. Been playing a lot of live cash in occasional venetian venetian and win tournaments and such and then Just one us circuit ring online. Last sunday congrats man congrats. Why the live cash games streets and not the live tournament Live tournaments fairmount. Those kind of my that was kind of bread and butter. I mix between live tournaments and online tournaments for the most part. But i've actually been pretty down slaying online mostly. I wouldn't call it a big downswing in live tournaments. But i just hadn't really done too much since the since the i tournaments can i came back so in those can add up a lot quicker other just the the lower end binds are are higher than the barbarians. You know the higher end by that. I play online. Of course even like a four hundred live is like a low buying soft tournament. And i really don't play for a play much over to fifteen to twenty five or something on sunday itself had been kind of going on down swing so it's pretty hard to downswing in. Live one three into five cash people ages. They're like literally giving it away. I mean you you can do it. You can down so you can run. Bad variance will will get you. But it's it's you don't win when your win rate is is something absurd and i'm not even super i'm not even very good at cash. I would say. But i was still winning it some somewhere in the neighborhood of forty to fifty dollars an hour in a one three to five combines so it was an adjusted make sure keeps him steadying going to pay the bills and everything in this kind of play tournaments to trinh make more

I always look at stuff in the back garden. Sometimes it hurts my experience but that is the price. I pay donald for being a a movie maker. One of the last lines we say is you can never underestimate the importance of listening. And i think that's A very simple but very smart sentence that so much miscommunication comes from no one really truly listening to each other. It's hard to listen. That's one of the hardest things to do. You know it's it's a simple thing to do but it's actually hard to shut your brain off and listen to somebody else's stuff. "How can we help our favorite jersey girl all right well so this is not just fixing my life. It's gonna fix all my friends lives also on it ready. I just turned twenty seven. It's quarantine like newly single all these different things. I think i'm in the throes of a quarter life crisis. How does one get through it. Order life prices. You gotta go through. You've gotta work you can do. There are there are books and the podcast and seminars and one can take action. That's what i think. I think when. I was going through a lot of stuff i did a lot of work on myself. Some of it was as simple as a therapist Just to get myself talking. But i would ask for self help book recommendations. I took workshops. I you know there's a now there's ted talks. There's you can't just sit back in like my attitude about life when you're in a crisis mode if even if it's mild or real crisis like in this episode there's a suicidal story is that you have to be proactive. You half you. You can't just sit and wait for to fix itself. You have to to take steps to to to do the work. I mean i have fired so many therapists just 'cause i always pick fights with them because that's the kind of person i am but my brother just told me to read this book the art of not giving a fuck or something to learn. You have any books that you recommend. I'm not as strong reader. So you know donnell only reads the back of the star wars video game box and then also star. Wars comics are also in terms of dating which always cheers people up are you are you actively trying are you on the apps or are you trying to meet somebody new. Yeah i'm on the apps. the extra sleep. I don't know if it's just my area air. What produce like a certain amount of pros. You got a lot of bros. There you have to go to manhattan and changed me and location in manhattan. I don't know if it's like. I'm not playing asking right or what but i either. The people either don't get any action on the apps or the action. I get is like literally. Forgive me but like the first messages. Sit on my face. And i'm like hey that's funny that that's someone's pick up lines on my face. I've gotten that three times in work. Wow i'm so sorry. These apps man joel. Don't worry we're gonna find you a good one..

I'm sorry you he's lost the ability to speak which is so hard for him. Plugged them up. I'm sorry by the way you have a question. Why don't we gress for a moment when we last week talked about virtual Having sex via vr with each other everyone and their cousin weighed in that. There is of course a black mirror. Happy so about this. So thank you for reminding us if you don't watch black mayor and watch black mirror but there's a very very fascinating bizarrely hilarious interesting commentary on sexuality episode of black mirror including vr sex between two hetero friends so there you go a manager of a question for us to cheer donald up the sexiest man alive in my eyes. You can't nuking no no no. I'm amanda i am. I am not the sexiest man alive. According to zach. I put out a magazine. My best friend said to me. Oh you're never gonna get that. Fuck up look look bring you together with a question. Yes all right. Well i hope this brings up good memories not badly. It's one of my questions was so what is the worst trouble. The two of you have gotten into together whether it was onset of scribes or not onset. How are you going to ask me this question. I can't answer this question. I can't answer this question. We got into a lot of trouble. That salata trouble that we've got into. We can't even talk about there. Were there were times where speak carefully. I am trying my hardest to right now. There were times where i was like. I can't believe that should happen or we ought to we got. I can't believe we put ourselves into that situation and that should happen. Yeah you don't wanna give a lot of money and a lot of fame two two guys in their mid twenties and expect that they're not going to want to do it to you. Don't wanna do it to anyone. In their mid twenties. Not two guys to anyone in an age is not a good thing. We had some adventures And and that's all we'll say whores another glass of wine for himself and fires who in the afternoon amanda. We'll give you another question because that one. We can't really fully answer. If i met spare so i was actually an aso. Zakum like obsessed with garden state. Jangling high school me would probably literally pass away if she knew. "Hello. Uk listeners. Did you know that the uk has some of the most intrusive data retention laws in the world. That's right your internet provider like bt. Your sky is required by law to store all of your meta data from the last year your web history call times location data all of it. W t f guys. That's why i want to tell you about an app. I use every single day of my life to keep my data safe express. Vpn even if you're not suspected of any criminal offence your government can look into your data whenever they want expressed. Upn puts a stop to this. They re route your connection through encrypted servers so your internet provider or government can't see or log what you're doing online and you know what is great about express. Vpn tell me donald. They have servers over ninety countries. So you can change your online location to whatever you want now. You can pretend you live in djibouti and know those streaming services that black the shows that you want to see because you don't live in the same country as though express. Vp in can control all of that make..

Yeah what One of one of our favorites when we need most wanted to some of the some of the crew members did the whole nine years with us. And i think puke came and went a little bit but he was with almost the whole time. Yes you know electronic doing Setting up setting focusing the lights and he made a lot of any made a lot of Cameos on the show this this grinning sing. I'm yeah this is the beginning of seeing him. But you'll wrecking. You'll find him a lot. More as agra moment in one of the season's where where i'm running lines with them He was playing member that he was playing. We actually filmed it and it wasn't you guys weren't running lines. Somebody was supposed to be in the scene. They were like i cook. It wasn't new orleans was everyone was like pook get up in there and do it and he gets in there and we all thought he was gonna be like. I can't do it guys. He played the shit out of it. He played the he went hardcore with it. Funny thing is he still had like all his gear on gear on his walkie talkie ship but he just played played it so straight like he was elliott or something. It was really good man. It was really awesome aren't listened. I don't know if it's us tarrant. I are feeling it's probably stunt people that fall out of that tree but you can totally see the matt that's hidden under like a really lame piece of astroturf. I love. I love the fact that jd's ideal date with a girl to kiss. The first time was in a tree. He's just like just like the song just like the song. Gee that's right i Gd's such a fucking door. It's amazing he got these great women because he is so nerdy. I think it's so endearing. Think it's endearing that this is how jd is you don't you don't you. Don't think his. Since no i do. I think he's nerdy and charming and people and women and men Depending on what your indu loved to laugh. And so he gets. I'm guessing he gets chicks past. Obviously he's dr which is impressive but also because he's silly and goofy and makes them laugh. He reminds me of hugh grant in. What's that In every hugh grant movie right pretty much but him and julia roberts oh notting hill notting hill. And how hugh. Grant's kind of like oopsy. Daisy like jodi says things like that. And that's that's endearing. I totally get why. Jd has such a great is a ladies man. How 'bout that door hit. I do it three twenty eight. That was pretty damn nice. If i if i give myself a A comedic stunt pat on the backs of nice door hit. And i don't think i'd done a glass door hit since the pilot. So there you go ladies and gentlemen. I think that's the first time i've run into that. What's supposed to be the very same door. "I'm like come on by you. Well there are some people that do have that talent though. There are some people that you know to go into a recording booth and do your verse and do it in one take is a you know what i mean. That means you've not only Worked on it but you're so connected to the beat that you're able to ride the rhythm also you know that's different. A guy goes in. Doesn't it usually write it out when he goes in the recording booth. Sometimes he writes at that moment and then goes in or or is jay z. Jay z is one of the masters of freestyle little wayne. He was one of the masses of freestyle. But if if you don't write your arms and you just try to think of it in your you you think about big notorious b i g is the king of this where he would sit in the studio and just listen to the beat and as he listened he sit there and rehearse it in his head right and then as it went on as it got to the point where you know you know like a our. I don't know how long it would take. He'd be like all right. I'm ready and he'd go into the booth and drop what he was rehearsing to do that. That's free out of me. You know what i mean like. It's like in my mind. All right i'm gonna say this this this and this and this and that this part i'm gonna try and freak it like this okay and then i said right right right and then always go back and when you listen to it. The are and the him catching a beat. All of that shit is so raw. Because it's it's not written. It's it's him feeling it and being in it. That's a bit of freestyle right there. You know what i mean. That's a that's a natural makes the great ones jay z's another one that does that. I heard little wayne somebody that does that. I already just would just go on for days. Sit in front of a little microphone keyboard and just wrapping rapid rapid rapid rap and rapid rapid rapid rapid rapid read. That's how it was when. I did my passover route that i sang for. Northeast area and it makes it out of their hours. It's, it's really writing in there. Would you find when it comes to say automation versus humans in charge, right? I wrote it this way. Everything in the warehouse that can be automated already has been so even the show themselves employees walk up to them robot under the show up at bring that to you stuff moves around and conveyor about those anybody picky, boxer, picking up an item and moving through the kind of holy grail. When it comes to automation, it's still a pick a robot. So the way human could pick an object office shop or range it in a box with other things knowing how you space the best that remains being that robots can't do. So when it comes to tax like picking and packing still got humans everything else, there's a robot for rest assured. They're working on that angle for robots. So, right. Absolutely. Reuters reported this last week I believe it was that Amazon has rolled out robots that can box items. So still can't arrange you know, say of a laundry detergent, and a roll of toilet paper in one box. But if you've got something that just needs to be boxed up by itself. The robot could do it. And this is definitely something that not only Amazon, WalMart Alibaba. The Chinese have been pouring money into trying to figure out if they can get a robot. So, you know, this these jobs could soon disappear. I got the sense to that's a perhaps reporters struggle to pack boxes when they don't have insurance. Yes. Absolutely. I tried my head that this tax chew boxes. And it you know there's a lot of elements that goes in go into it. "fifteen second" Discussed on Izzy and Spain

"I love that fifteen seconds calm analysis of the right i'm just imagining those moments when you're really mad at somebody and you're just ready yellen you're like i need fifteen seconds and then you just everybody's that's quietly in that like you're playing a pickup game basketball gets a little bit too heated and somebody walks in other guys let's just take fifteen seconds like take our ethnic money i don't know if that doesn't just fire people up more than you then you know you're gonna be like you're angry and you have to answer the questions and then that's only gonna fire you up more i'm not sure that in the process and i was right i mean if you're the kind of person that is you know unhinged enough to to leave all caps super angry comments you're probably not the kind of person that's going to be sued by a 15minute break to collect your thoughts you're probably only going to be more enraged i love everything the the the process of forcing us to think logically before we say something on the internet just seems that will seems so far raining i mean and it seems like little unrealistic i find it would be it's kind of like my constant beef it a you hi i'm one of the guys that the consistently says the twitter should force you to give some sort of a like a credit card or something than the lines you so they know who you are and you say the things that you say in an and i would love to see that so that there some level of accountability i would love accountability and comments actions the problem is than common sections would die i mean i think people people will only your keyboard warriors will suddenly shrink and then nobody's going to read them anymore but that's why there are certain places like you know a dead spin i'm not exactly sure how they do it but i believe you have to.
