This particular picture that I'm holding that one isn't it you have seen that see that's one of the yes I think this is one of the pictures that helped him acquire over a half a million followers. Wow but you know what it is Hal it's what we always talk about it's a man and his dog that is he's a good looking guy that is so right he has there's something about watching a guy who loves his pet yeah it says that he's a he's a he's compassionate doesn't it ladies love this it does and he knows how to care for something now he didn't try he didn't try what men don't care for anything is that what you're saying no it had a you know nurture sure sure sure no they don't they don't care if they put their underwear in the hamper they don't care if they put the seat down they don't but we're not bitter. He took this picture and he posted it online he was not trying to become famous he was not trying to make his dog famous but the picture took off it circulated it became viral as those kids are saying these days and now he's actually quit his daytime job with the city of Denver Colorado and he is spending full time promoting his dog or helping his dog become a social media influencer and we're going to be talking to Kelly Lund this hour right here on Animal Radio we'll find out about his dog Loki.

"Debbie yes how says sometimes I can get passionate yes but I think that is one of the things and actually we know compliance with food allergy prescriptions when I give a prescription to someone and say okay I'd like you to follow this hypo allergenic diet research shows that only 20% of pet owners can actually do that because of household situations and also just compliance because it is tough so that would be one thing that if if you can do it and you can kind of put all your efforts into that that one thing might make a big difference so that would be another thing to really look at for this kid and in some cases if I do all these things and we're still feeling like we're treading water and we're not getting ahead of the game you know there are veterinary dermatologists if we need to do specialized allergy testing or even just a you know consultation to give us some direction so if that's something where your veterinarian feels like they've kind of taken it as far as they can you know see if that's an option for you as well there's a there's a lot more that we can do just depends on how aggressive you want to get about getting an answer I've actually gone to taking a biopsy sometimes of the pet skin and we'll find out oh that's a hormone related disease oh my gosh we need to check this dogs for thyroid disorders we need to check this dog for a Cushing's disease and it gives us a different direction okay now we have we have two other labs we got another chocolate lab puppy she's seven months old and then we got a yellow lab that's eight years old and and they don't have it so would it might spread if that's what it was some kinds can but others can be more of an immune problem so it can be an individual problem particularly demodex type mites are not trans not typically contagious in the normal sense of the word and it sounds like you're a man who loves his labs just like this is our fifth one now or whether we have five already and a couple of one had cancer here a couple of the last year and we had to put him to sleep and the other one she was like 16 years old when we put her to sleep and we've got the ashes all in the house there and little little things with pictures and stuff oh yeah we love our dogs we're out here in the woods and we love it out here so well they're all close with you I'm sure and oh yeah you're animal radio app for iPhone and Android I am the family dog and it's that time of year again the one where pet parents start looking for Fido friendly hotels and destinations where Fido is welcome make no bones about it pets are part of the family and we like to sniff out new places too and we hate to be turned away especially when we're on our best behavior so we won't be left out in the cold be sure to pick up a copy of Fido friendly magazine to find the best hotels and destinations where Fido is always welcome go online to Fido friendly calm and subscribe today celebrating the connection with our pets this is animal radio featuring your dream team veterinarian dr.

Yes, I have my favorites, but I'd have to say eating things is definitely by far one of the most common reasons people bring their animals to the vet. And we're going to find out exactly what is it that they're eating in just a few minutes right here on animal radio. Hey. How are you? Good. I have doctor Debbie right here. What's going on with your animal? Oh, I have a female border collie. And I also have one of her sons because they're cow dogs, and we work cows with them. Anyway, we were gone for a few days and didn't realize that she had come in heat and sure enough, the day we got home, we noticed that her son had bred her or read her that day. Oh, okay. So what we could do about that, if there's a morning after pill or something for a dog or yeah, well, you know, the best thing that I could suggest is to have this baby spade. That's the honest truth here. You know, she's at an age already at 6 where if she's not spayed, we do have to be a watchful for some other health problems that are coming on. Pyometra, which is a uterine infection, plus all the different cancers in the reproductive tract. So I don't see a reason that I would endorse allowing a pregnancy to go forward at this point. But in response to your question, is there a miss mating pill you can give? There's really not a pill that we give to dogs to terminate pregnancy. It's kind of for me, I have to say, it's something I don't do a lot of reproductive work because I don't particularly enjoy it. I think we have enough doggies on this earth that we don't need to really be reproducing them for them. But there are some different miss mating techniques that can be done. Generally, in the U.S., they're limited to treatment 30 days after they've already become pregnant. So you've already got a pretty full, almost full term pregnancy there. So for me, I find that a little distasteful to have to terminate pregnancies at that point. So those are different types of injection techniques that are done. In other countries, they do have some injections that can be done early into the pregnancy. Just almost immediately after breeding. But it's really not very widespread in the U.S.. You could always check around and see if your area, if you have any kind of reproductive specialists that have this available. But it's really not advised. I'd say to let this baby go for it. Now, what would be the puppies would be like? And what kind of concerns do you have? When we breed too closely related dogs, whether they're brother and sister, father and daughter, you run the risk of concentrating genes. So normally this is done with any breeding operation. They'll take a good dog and a good dog. And they hope to have more good genes. So if we've got any kind of recessive genes, any bad genes in there, you're going to have a more likely expression of those genes. And in colleagues, there's certainly every braids got them, but there's certainly some that we'd be worried about that that could concentrate eye anomaly as one of them. There's a neutrophil problem. There's some neurologic problems, some recessive type diseases that can occur. So there is some potential, but I see in the wide vast number of closely related dogs that breed, we don't always see a bunch of abnormal puppies. But you do definitely run that risk of having some of those certain diseases expressed more likely. I don't know if the parents have any kind of health problems or anything that in any related to health problems and we use this dog. She's out of a national champion stock dog and we usually breed her to along those bloodlines, not the same bloodlines, but to champion stock dogs and then we train the pups and sell them to ranchers. So it's not like just a normal just a normal dog, you know? Okay. All right. That's the reason why I don't want to spare because we sell the puppies for a lot of money. Oh, gosh. You breaking my heart here, man. It 6 years, and she put her years in. Is there uterus done? This is my opinion here, and I'd have to say that it's just maybe a time you need to really consider has she done her service for

"Eyes that always forms. And that's really hard when the groomers try to get in there and try to clean that. So yeah, if I wouldn't hold anything against your groomers, a lot of older patients start to get a little bit intolerant of some of these things. So I talk to your veterinarian if it is safe and she seems in good health, then there are some lighter tranquilizers. Maybe not the more typical ones that we use for the average dog, but some audio is actually used as an axe believe it or not. In the right dosage that can actually be a little bit calming and we can watch the patient costs just lay with that. Hello everyone, it's Robert Zimmer, your pet world insider, here with this week's animal radio list, 6 things to know one considering adopting a bird. January is bird adoption month, and we certainly love all types of birds here in animal radio. Cockatiels, African grays, macaws, parakeets, finches, and canaries are just some of the popular birds for pets. But before you adopt one, here are 6 important things to know about birds when considering adding a bird to your family. Number one birds can live very long lives. Depending on the type of bird you're bringing into the family, they may live for 20 to 50 years or even more. Some parrots have been documented living into their 80s. That means that this is a long-term commitment that will be with you longer than most other things in your life. Number two birds are extremely social and need attention for their emotional and physical support. They need to be engaged by their family. Remember also that birds have different ways of communicating or vocalizing. Some saying or chirp, while others may converse with you using words or maybe latch onto a particular phrase or 12 that you may or may not want to hear repeatedly. Number three birds are active and very inquisitive. They need to have their minds and bodies engage with room to move about in cages and hopefully a sheltered aviary or place to stretch their wings. If they have had their wings clipped, they also need to have room to exercise and toys to climb and swing on. Toys and other things that allow birds to work off their energy as well as nurture their natural instincts are critical for their physical and mental health. Number four sleep is something that we pet parents want, but birds must have. That's right, sleep is essential to a bird's health. Most birds need in the range of ten hours of sleep a night. So if you're a night owl, don't expect your bird to be. Number 5 speaking of health, birds eat a varied diet that is more than just bird seed or pellets. They also need grains, fruits, vegetables, and some added vitamins and minerals as well. The term eating like a bird shouldn't refer to eating very little, instead it should probably refer to eating healthy and varied offerings that nature offers. From foods to vegetables, there are a lot of quality options that not only provide your bird with sustenance and nutrition, but also engage their minds in their playful side as well. So what you feed and how you feed is critical. Finally, if you're gonna adopt a bird, then remember that you will need to have a vet who specializes in bird medicine and care. Not every veterinarian works with birds or other exotic animals. Having a bird can be a rewarding long-term relationship. "Feedback. Sure. Well, what's your describing kind of a raw crusty somewhat even ulcerated area on the front leg is something we term lick granulomas. And the causes of this type of thing in dogs can be many. And you mentioned, you know, nervous habit. And that's certainly one cause, but I'll be honest, there are a lot more skin and allergic causes for this kind of thing than just a pet that's nervous. So when we do see this, a lot of pets, it's a manifestation of itchiness in their skin. And people are different than dogs. We got to kind of look back at that. People we get a lot of hay fever signs. If we have an allergy about. Dogs, their target organ is their skin. So while we sniffle and sneeze, they lick and shoe. And the front leg is just right for the taken. It's in their eyesight. It's just a real common area where this kind of thing happens. So whatever you try, the number one thing that you need to do is to not allow that repeated licking cycle. So that may mean using different means such as elizabethan collars, socks, even bandaging, managing is fraught with a little bit of some complications there. But we have to keep him from not licking, because that repeated looking, even though the tongue is somewhat soft, compared to say like a cat's tongue, it's stimulating inflammation further. So we've got to stop that cycle. But once we get to the level where what I've described is where it's raised crusty ulcerated, sometimes these will even get a little oozy. Those are ones that need some more of a medical approach to them. So we can do things to target infection and a true hotspot what we call a hotspot is actually a pyoderma, which is a bacterial infection. So part of how we treat these me, including antibiotics. But then we look at the things to help with the alleviating the itch. And it sounds like the veterinarian may have used something like an antihistamine, which side effect can be drowsiness. But it can certainly help some pets. There are other pets that we need other things to help as well. And those may be other types of allergy medications, either injections or other types of pills that can help to squash the edge so that feels more comfortable and leaves the aerial loan. But there are things like diet, you mentioned diet and believe it or not food allergy can occur and kind of lead to some of these symptoms where they're licking repeatedly. So addressing diet with a good hypoallergenic diet can be part of what we do along with all of these. And I could go on for an hour and all the different allergy therapies we do. So there are some other things you mentioned topicals. And yeah, there are some topicals that can be helpful. But I doubt that that alone is going to be the answer to your situation. But using conjunction with some of these other therapies, we might have a better chance of knocking this. At least to a quieter face. Some hats continue to be plagued with these. And I've used therapeutic laser treatments to help decrease the inflammation and that can go really far to help decrease the inflammation and improve their healing time. So it just depends on what your veterinarian what they feel is the most appropriate for the situation, but I would look at topical ceramides, which are types of topicals that your veterinarian may prescribe to put on the area or in elsewhere on the body. And then we may use things like either fatty acid supplements or there's diets specific for pets with skin problems. One of my little critters is on I hate to say brands, but it's on a one called germ defense, and it has enhanced fatty acids for skin, enhancing the skin barrier. So there's those kind of steps we can take as well. And then the allergy medications, you'll certainly we'd have to be appropriate for your pet. Costs can play a role. Sometimes this topical spray is kind of the cheapest thing you can go with, but you may need to hit it from another direction using, say, an antibiotic or another anti itch medicine through your veterinarian. So it really is individualized to what your pet needs. So I think there's some good help that can be given. But you just got to go for it. Well, your staff has been awesome. "Not something nearly as cheerful. I have to tell you, poisonings of dogs, intentional poisonings. Something that's escalating. And there's some new research out on that. So we'll share that with you. Intentional poisonings on the rise is what you're saying, wow, okay. Joey, what are you working on for today's show? Well, we're going to talk about a crappy deal. The importance of paying attention to your pets anal glands. Which is very important. So pay attention. Okay, alert alert. That's right. Can you hear him say that and not think about doctor Debbie aiming that at some point? I actually had an emergency anal gland expression on my own dog when we were traveling. I had to like pull out cooking gloves and we had expresses anal glands and bathe them in a shower at a hotel. It was just, yeah. This wasn't a bouvier, was it? No, but you know, she's very good. She allows me to take care of those for her, but my little tear, yeah. So he's got the I was just picturing you in a hotel shower with a bouvier. Who with your cooking gloves on? I will just say I have made all of my dogs in hotels at some point. Usually they're in the walk in showers. So I will not disclose what hotel chains I've been through, but some of them are on the upper crust where the people have no idea. What made it an emergency? He was leaking in my lap while we were traveling. And it was just to the point where I was like, I was looking at my husband. Is that you? And if he's like, no, it's not me, and I'm like, oh my God, I gotta bathe him. Unpleasant close quarters. Wow. I wonder what the situation is that your husband would even ask you, was it you? No, she asked her husband. Either way, really. Frankly. I want to know, why did the guy always get the first place? It's always the guidance. That's the first place. If you smell. Not a human smell. I don't know. Very good. I just want you to know that. Joey, you have great personal hygiene, but sometimes men just, especially if you're traveling, or camping, sometimes that kind of goes to the wayside a little bit. So I don't care. Man in the house. Thank goodness people don't have anal glands. That's all I got to say. Yeah, okay, how about taking a couple of phone calls? What do you say? All right, let's go to it. The hi Paula, how are you? Good, how are you? Very good. Where are you calling from today? I am calling from buffalo, New York. Okay. How can we help you? I have the whole team here for you. So I have a one and a half year old puppy, and he's been having some issues with allergies. He's had multiple skin infections, eye infections, ear infections, the whole shebang. So we have gone to a hydrolyzed diet. We have done hydroxyzine. We have done benadryl. We have done zero tech. We have done pretty much everything. And my vet now wants to try apocalypse. And I'm a little apprehensive about it because it's an immunosuppressive. So I was wondering what your thoughts are on the drug. Okay. Well, my first thoughts are anytime that I hear of a young Labrador that is having skin problems. Itching, scratching, ear infections, and rashes. Yeah, I do put my clinical radar towards allergies. But first, I do want to make sure we do a very thorough flea treatment for regimen, as well as even checking and treating for other things that can be going on at the same time. So making sure we are treating flea medication every month. And then I'm assuming, as a veterinarian, your veterinarian is probably also treated for the bacterial infection, yeast infections, checking for mites. Because all of those things can make our assessment of how well we respond to allergy therapy kind of muddy, if you will. So I always treat for skin mites. The microscope microscopic form, even if I don't see them on my chest because we have to get that off the list. So that's specifically demodex and scabies mites. So make sure that your veterinarian has treated for that. It's pretty simple, easy with either topicals or oral forms of medicine. Also, use like a shampoo to treat that because we have done that as well. Well, for mites not so much. There are dips and so forth that I would use, but to treat that, I'd go other ways, but using the shampoo, which can be a relief for the itching and the scratch, not unlike if you've got the chickenpox and you soak in a veno bath. But some of the other things you mentioned diet, yes, I like the idea of the hydrolyzed diet and just while you're doing that, making sure that we're not using any other treats, rawhides, flavored supplements, or any types of medications that may be in the flavored form, otherwise that'll kind of forward our efforts there. So then we get to things like Apple quell and even the other medicine cite a point, which is in an injection form. For a path that's having a lot of itching, I do feel that these drugs have a great benefit. And they can be life-changing. I've seen some young labs go from irritable itchy, unhappy dogs, to just a completely happy, contented companion. So they do have their place. Now, you ask about the long-term use of app equivalence. And that is, I don't think we really know. Because it is technically something that affects their immune system. Yeah, we do have to do monitoring of blood in urine. And we do that once to twice a year. So for pets that I have on it long term, I do that. And I could tell you, I've been using this for probably three to four years, exclusively on some pets and long-term control for allergies. And we've had a few bouts of papilloma, which are a viral induced kind of skin growth. But I can't say we've seen anything really horrible. But still, it's still something to be seen, I think, for some of the long term effects. But it really can be life-changing. So I definitely encourage that. And just for those that don't know, apocalypse and the other medicine I mentioned cytokine, they're drugs that help to kind of stop some of the pathway of the itch cycle in dogs. So they work in different mechanisms. But apical basically helps to kind of shut down part of the enzyme pathway involved with itch. And it doesn't help every dog, but it can help a vast majority of dogs that I see with allergies. And then the other kind of thing in the short term one is the injection that lasts for about four weeks, up to 8 weeks, and that might be even a short term bridging thing that we can look at doing. So the two big things that I'd encourage you because you are so young is definitely find a diet that works for him because food allergy is a very common cause of allergy symptoms in a young dog. I've seen it as puppies 6 months and older, where they start to have allergy symptoms. So food is definitely one thing to look at. The other is, might also give you time to look at the resources to get him allergy tested. And there's the different ways to do that either the blood allergy testing or seeing a dermatologist for the skin patch testing, but skin patch testing is by far the best way to diagnose that. And that might be a good kind of long-term step, is see what he is allergic to, and are there things you can avoid, but if not, then maybe get him on allergen therapy, and that can help dampen his response to those allergens when he encounters them in the future. So he's got a lot of that. Yeah, and there's a lot of opportunities. I am so happy. The current year, we have so much more to offer pets with allergy symptoms than just antihistamines. And I hate when that's people, you know, that's all they've used for their dogs because there's so many good things out there now that have been proven, have good safety profiles and can really do a lot for our animals. Well, I am an old oncology nurse and I know what some of these immunosuppressives do to people. So I was just concerned about my pup like I don't want bone marrow to be depressed for too long and stuff like that because I don't want them to have other issues further down the road because you know it is relatively new so that was why I was like oh that's a W and C with her dog bar. He had a canine partner, his name was figo. At the funeral for his best friend and partner, pictures were taken a figo with his paw on the coffin. Philo's been retired now and will live with officer Ellis family. Here are some news people commenting on the photo. It's an incredible photograph. It looks like this grieving there. So sweet. The dog definitely knows from the scent that his former best friend and leader is in that coffin. You know a dog relies on his sense of smell to interpret the world. Much the way people depend on sight. This weekend while I was out walking my dog, there's a fountain, and he was taking a drink. He likes to lay down when he's taking a drink. He's such a big dog, gets hot real easily. While he's doing that, another dog comes up from behind him and begins sniffing you nowhere. Anyway, my dog just keeps drinking paying no attention. He's been around people in other dogs his entire life. I socialized him a lot when he was a puppy, and I continue to do that. So when a dog circles around back to give the old sniffer roo, as long as he has good manners, my dog will let him. Well, the human couldn't have been more upset. She runs up and starts scolding the dog to leave my dog alone, leave Malone. He's trying to take a drink, she says, I started telling her that this is how dogs learn about each other. This is the way they greet each other, that the rear to another dog is like the face to another person. She didn't hear a thing I said. She wasn't listening. And I could see the look of disgust on her face. I could see what was going on in her mind. The thought of putting your nose, you know, just makes some people very uncomfortable. That's because in the human world, you'd never do that. Although I think it would be funny if you did. We walk up and shake hands or we give each other a hug. So there are certain things that dogs do because their dogs that most humans would never dream of doing. So when some folks see dogs acting like dogs, it grosses them out. It's an important lesson. Dogs are dogs. They don't see the world the way you and I do. They see the world with their noses, and those noses are gonna go, well, everywhere. So smile, sit back and tell yourself that's my dog. Here at animal radio we love ourselves some senior pets. We look around the studio the only senior pet the only one that's not a senior pet is tater who's wet. Two, three, how old is tater? He's two. He'll be three in, I think February. He is the youngest in the studio here. And he probably knows that too. But most everybody else a senior we're talking humans and animals alike in the studio. It's hard to get adopted if you're a senior animal and you're looking for a home. It's sad. It's unfortunate. Yeah, they can't compete. Dogs can't pee against puppies and cats can't compete against the kittens. But I think we're all different on that. Don't you guys? I mean, I would prefer a senior pet because none of that long left. No more puppies. I don't want to go through the puppy phase again. But then you do have lifetime conditions and diseases that can come with age. And I think that's on everyone's mind. Finances. I hate to say it, but since these animals don't get adopted, sometimes they spend their lives in a shelter they live out their lives in a shelter in a really undesirable situation. But if Kim Scarlett can help it, she runs the silver muzzle cottage and she adopts in older senior animals that are near the end of their life or going through hospice. And it takes a special kind of person to do that. Yes, it does. And we're going to talk to her in just a few minutes right here on animal radio. What are you working on, miss Brooks? We're in a we try to do like cats and dogs and sometimes we don't get all of our cat love in there. So I'm just studying up on cats. And I'm going to give you the history of cats in a nutshell. Really? Because we know there's Egyptian cats and all this stuff. And there's, you know, Persian cat, all this kind of stuff. But cats are really a mystery to me anyhow. How did they get here? And they've been around so many thousands of years. I think that's a part of them. Is they want to be a mystery. Most cats want to be aloof. Yeah. Mysterious. I think you're right. So we'll find out where they came from. In the abridged cliff notes version, just around the corner with miss Brooks, let's go to line three. Hi, John. How are you? Wonderful. How are you doing today? Good, where are you? We're in Rancho Cucamonga, California. The LA sort of area, right? Yeah, that's true. Yeah, I just stopped outside of LA. Correct. So what's going on? How can we help you today? Well, we have chief female boxers one three and a half of one is a year and a half. The three and a half we had 6 before her first cycle. So about 7, 8 months, the year and a half we let her have for, I guess, our puppy cycle and then another full cycle, so we had her fixed speed and I'll probably late January or I'm sorry, link December early January. So year and a half to when we let how cycles critiques are all different sizes, some as though she's had a litter of puppies and some as though she's still a puppy, I guess, is by the easiest way to say it. So we know that cancer and breast cancer and all types of tumors run in these dogs. So just a little cause for concern is to why some have not gone back down. I know they get cleaned

"The problem is on a long haired dog. It's a little bit more difficult for two reasons. Number one, it cakes up in there and a lot of times it'll match. Number two, it's real easy getting it in it in dog's eyes. And if you ever got medicated powder in your eye, you know exactly what it feels like. It doesn't feel real good. So this is what you're going to do. You're going to get yourself some Q tips. You're going to get yourself some hydrogen peroxide. Real cheap method. Okay, dip the Q tips in a hydrogen peroxide, but don't dip it right in the container itself in contaminated pour a little bit out in another container. Dip it in there and you're going to wipe the folds, not the corners of the eyes, the folds that are underneath the eyes where the skin flaps over and you know what there's a little bit. I don't know if how to explain any better than that, but you're going to go in those folds and you're going to wipe it out and you're going to notice you probably going to get almost like a mucus Y discharge on the end. It's almost going to look greenish like slimy. It's pretty yeah, it's pretty nasty. But basically what it is it stays wet there because they tear or they just get it wet in general and it doesn't dry because the skin is folded over itself. So what you're going to do is you're going to go in there and with the Q tip and the hydrogen peroxide. You're going to dry it up real good with a tissue or cloth. That's clean. And then go in there with just a little bit of corn starch. Now it's a corn starch will do is, you know, I have to really worry about it getting in the dog's eyes and put it in a lightweight on cake and on because you don't want it to map the face because it will map the face a little bit if you put too much in. Now what that's going to do, it's going to draw the moisture out. If you do that in the beginning, you need to do it every single day. When I say in the beginning, at least a solid week of doing it. After that, if you stayed on top of it and did that once a week, you're going to notice the odor is going to go away. Okay, so you don't have to use anything unnatural. They sell a lot of face deodorizers and stuff. And honestly, all that really does is irritate. I've seen that irritate the dogs even worse that what ends up happening is when they use a facial deodorant is that the dog starts scratching at it. So not only is it wet and slimy, but now they've irritated it and now it's infected. And the infection usually is a little bit harder to cure because if you think about it, it's an infectious breeding ground because it's wet, it's moist, it's stinky, it's dirty. So it's perfect for an infection. So don't put anything that's going to irritate it. Peroxide, a little corn starch, keep it dry. It works one, as you talk, face won't smell like a wet mop anymore. And I hope that helped Christians problem. But that's a, you know what? That's a problem that we get with a lot of dogs. And even when they come into the grooming song, we can get the smell out temporary. And when I say temporarily usually by the next day, it comes back unless it's something that's that you're really stay on top of. Can I use that on my mother in law? She has a real wrinkled up face. Yes, she can. Yes, she can. Yes, an overweight people, you know, unfolds, you know, with a fat you can add that also works with itself. And I can say that because, you know, I used to have that problem, I guess. You could say whatever you want. Enjoy a Melania on animal radio. And in fact, this young lady, when we started, she started a little website called petfinder dot com. Just a little bit. Just a little website then. And it turned into something really tremendous. And it is, as far as I'm concerned, probably the foremost pet adoption website that there is and ever has been. We welcome to the show Betsy Saul, hi Betsy, how are you doing? I'm fine. How are you guys? Oh splendid doing great. So you have a project called 9-1-1 foster pets. What's that all about? Well, there were several others that were working with pet finder and over the many years there were so gratified in the public's response. And I think that it's fair to say that we really raised the awareness about all of the amazing animals and shelters over that 15 year period before I was ready to move on to the next thing and tackle the next problem because I became frustrated with the pets that were never really I don't want to say left behind because that suggests that nobody cares about them and I think that the entire and will for community does care about all these pets. But the pets that never make it to adoption row. You know, the pets that because their newborn or because they're old or because they just need a little extra time before they're transported to another facility, don't ever get any kind of exposure. And so attach finder, obviously, we couldn't say, hey, this pet rescue organization is this shelter is more valuable than that to it just because it's short on time. We couldn't just that those tests always got kind of left behind in terms of our ability to really market them. So after a few years of not working on pet finder and having my fingers in some other things, I would find that when I was waking up at night, it was those guys that really fun to me when people would talk about how gratifying tight finder must have been, I would say, yeah, but I remember going to this animal shelter and taking a tour and we got to this back room. And if that is many animals were in the back, this back facility, as we're in this part of the facility, and I said, well, what are these guys? And they said, oh, well, these are the guys that are waiting, and about 25% of these animals make it up to adoption row, and they actually called it adoption row. And I just remember feeling kind of head swirly and like maybe I was going to throw up because there were only some amazing animals and so much of it is just about timing or luck or you know how it is. Yeah, so these are animals that are they could be sick or they could be, what are the maladies that keeps them from being adopted? You know, right now on 9-1-1 foster pets. We've got two groups of animals in more quantities than any other. And they are number one. Animals that are under 8 weeks of age. So these are these are your moms that are about to have puppies or kittens or batches of kittens and puppies that have no business being in a shelter and everyone knows that. And so we need to get them out of the shelter. They're urgent by virtue of the fact that they need socialization in a different way than they can get in a shelter. And also because they're at risk, right? At risk population. And so for disease and things like that, they need to be out of a shelter. The other group of pets are pets that because I think, you know, to toot our own horn because we've been so amazing in animal welfare doing what we do. There are now all these transports and rescues state to state and partnerships between the foster based groups and the shelters. But the timing is everything, right? And so we may have an animal that's identified in Dallas who somebody is willing to foster in Missouri, but the transport for that. The person that's going to drive that pet from one place to another is even it may be a purebred poodle and trying to get the total rescue, right? But we need a week because at time

I mean, if you're giving you cat catnip a lot and your cat's feeling all good and all that, even if he escapes what he stayed closer to the house because he's getting his fix. I like your questions. Your auditory catnip yourself. I would say that certainly catnip can for some cats can increase arousal and be more likely to run outside. Well, I'm hoping your animal's okay. Well, she is and she isn't. What's going on? Well, let's hear about it. Okay, she's one year old and she is speed. Her name is destiny. And she started having problems when she would go in the litter pan to have a bowel movement. She would come shooting out and kind of drag her rear end on the floor a little bit. And we thought at first, maybe she had a hair because sometimes you know that it gets stuck and all that. But it would happen more than just once. So we took her to the vet. And the vet checked her out and said that her anal glands had fluid in them. So now she got the fluid out. And then I think she stuck her on and inflammatory for a little while. But it was like two weeks after that. Destiny would start doing this again. So now she has her on a steroid, which we are weaning her off of it. And she's also on a very bland diet because of finding out about allergies. Now, my kids said they could be something else that's causing her to have this problem. Because it's not always that the anal glands are that swollen or that filled up with fluid, but she couldn't think of it at the time. Now you're going to say, why don't I just go back to the vet? The problem with that is she just had lost her daughter, the very tragic accident. So she's taking some time off, and I don't like to disturb her, of course, with that. Okay, certainly. So now I got to ask you, Kathy. With your kitty, what was the status of the stool when she was having this problem? Was there diarrhea or constipation? Just normal. It was normal, but she was still coming running out of the poop box. Yes. Okay. All right. Because there's a lot of different things. When we're talking about something that's causing that dramatic of a situation coming out of the box, we're really going to look for anything that's causing pain. And that could be constipation, it could be diarrhea, and it can be eno gland problems. In cats, it's pretty uncommon. It can happen. But especially in a youngster like that, I'd look for some of these other potential causes. And as they're working on some of the diet management in the poops are normal, I'm really happy to hear that her stools are good. But we're going to have some challenges as far as. Now, right now, is she using the litter box? Are we having any issues with that? No, we have problems now with that. So urinate in there, but she won't have her bell movement in there. And I think she's afraid it's going to hurt if she goes in there. Absolutely. With that part either. Okay. Well, if the stool situation is improving. So that we're pooping comfortably, we're certain that she's not in discomfort. We have to deal with this litter litter box a version, which is a huge problem in calf. So if you're kitty, knows where the litter box is, uses it and stops using it all of a sudden, especially if they're urinating and defecating outside of the box, we really have to look at the situation in the litter box. Now, for your kitty, we can really pair that with something painful and uncomfortable. And cats when faced with that in the litter box will refuse to go back to that. And yeah, so we have to retrain her to the whole litter box experience. And that means we're going to start fresh. So we're going to find a new location for that litter box. We're going to add more litter boxes, and we're going to change the whole structure in the environment. So depending on what type of litter substrate you've used before, we're going to ask you to experiment with that. So if you've used scoopable, well, maybe go to clay. If you had a lid on that litter box, get that lid off and set it aside. We'll go back to that later, but initially we need to trainer without anything that's going to cause any kind of compromising of her emotional state, if you will. Okay. And then we're going to also want to make sure that we change some kitties like easy entry into litter boxes. So I may even change the shape of the litter box. You don't have to buy those silly ones at the pad store. You can make your own even out of plastic storage container trays. And those are really nice, especially for older kiddies that have trouble with missing the box because it can be a low edge. It's a pain to clean because they scoop in these scratch things out. But for the cat when we're trying to train them to make it as easy as possible, it's one other technique you can try to really make that less scary or less of an imposition for her to use that. So we've got to do all of that and do not, like I said, do not put that litter box in the same location. Just the location alone can be a very big problem for many cats. Yeah, because when she goes, it's always close to where the litter pan is. So it's like, you know, but she won't go in there. Exactly. And it's kind of like, you know, oh gosh, you know, when you go camping, you know, there are those water potties, and you just don't want to use them. Sometimes I don't know anybody who might do this and go off into the Woods and go in the Woods. Instead of using the porta potty, but it does happen. And it's the same thing that our kitties are experiencing. They want to use it. They know it's the right place, but they just can't do it. So I think you've got the right idea. We just have to get those things together to give her a new location. New whole sense of the litter box experience. And then gradually, when she starts using that, then we can try to work back to the location or the preferences you have. But we've got to set that pattern first. So what do you think could be causing the pain when she goes if her anal glands aren't always filled with fluid? Yeah, for me, I do a lot of the same approaches that your doctor has done where we change the diets. I actually gross as it says. I like evidence. And I will actually ask my clients to bring the poop in. 'cause I want to see that full movement. Sometimes there can be changes in this shape or the size of a cat stool, and that may give us some hints to some problems. If there's any kind of looseness with that, sometimes that may mean that maybe we really don't have a constipation issue. Maybe we have more of a parasite. So those type of things we might want to deal with. Okay. And it's kind of challenging. And I know you don't want to trouble your vet and you don't want to hit upon in her time of trials. But you're Katie has needs too. So I think that's a valid thing and most veterinarians have feelings or substitutes. Folks that can kind of work in their absence. And then you were running a little late and so we're now together. What was for lunch today? You know, it was Brussels sprouts. It's very the rage these days. They pan fry them and they put all sorts of little goodies like pistachio nuts and it's very, very tasty. But it's vegan, which is what I'm concerned about. Well, of course, and I understand that. I love brussel sprouts. Everybody around me hates them. When you said that they all look, they all kind of shook, but I love them. No, it's become a very big thing in New York. Well, I wanted to. It's on most menus. Yes. It is. On most menus in New York? Yeah. I did not know that. How about that? No. So I saw that you have a book out. It's a book of your art. I didn't realize you're so talented. Well, thank you so much. You paint as well as act. And of course, you've been a big advocate for the animals for so long. I assume the paintings in the book all have to do with animals, correct? Yes, the whole book is about that. It's sort of joining all my loves and passions together. And yes, I have for years now been painting animals on commission or just on spec and then auctioning them off at our fundraisers. So it's been out there, but this book brings everything together. And everybody can see it and know about my artwork and so on and so forth. We're with Loretta's sweat. How old were you when you first started and what was your first animal that you painted? Well, I don't know that I started, but I was 6 when I won my first art prize. Oh, really? Wow. Yep. I've been painting and doodling and sketching ever since I can remember. Your parents encouraged that because mine didn't they saw me. They did not. They did not. Oh, really? They did not. They did not understand me at all. They my mother was constantly telling me to go out and play. Like, quote, the other children. And so she understood that. She did not understand this little chubby little blond kid at the dining room table drawing and painting and sketching. And this just made no sense to her because she should have been outside playing. So what can I tell you? I didn't care about hopscotch so much as I cared about making a painting. So. Were you on this mate? Were you an animal lover as a youngster? Oh, yes. Oh, yes, absolutely. What kind of animals did you have? Well, unhappily, it's not a good story. It's where I learned about what I wanted to do with my life. I had a pet. And my father took my little my little dog for a walk and translated me inside. I never saw my little dog again. He was not a cruel man. I don't want to paint that picture. He just really kind of didn't know better. It was traumatic. It was you're going to stab somebody with hold on. Somebody was pointing her umbrella at my heart. She wasn't watching why she was going to pointing to somebody else. Okay, so in that neighborhood, people drowned kittens, you know, unwanted animals in close with whatever. I'm passionate about knowledge. A big part of what I do is education. Teaching kids about staying and neutering. So that at a certain point, those kids are going to be teaching their parents, you know? But anyway, it's very important to know the enemy. Very important to know that puppy knows are a blight on our society, our kitten mills, whatever. I mean, but unless you know that, unless you know that aiding animals died indiscriminately to make a fur coat. You know, if you know that, when you walk into a department store and you see all the coats and you do the math, you think, and most women do do this. That you think, well, that's not what I want to do. That's not what who I am. And then you learn about the positive value of fake furs, for example, which need no storage, so already you're saving. They're just as warm, if not warmer. And the look we have come so far with how beautiful the faux fur looks. But people don't know the difference. No, not at all. I have one that is just smashing and I have to wear a button. But do people look at you weird when you wear it? Do they think it's real and say, hey, what is Loretta? No, actually people know enough about me to know if I'm wearing it. It's fake. But if I'm at an airport, for example, and this just happened recently, a woman came over to admire it. So that is the most gorgeous coat. I said, you do know it's fake. Oh my God. No, I didn't mean I feel it. I said, sure. She was dazzled, and I thought that's a win. That's a winning situation. Sure. I'm looking at the book here. We're all kind of sharing it in the studio here. It's a great book. I love the play on the title is sweetheart, which actually has I would say three at least three different meanings there. That's right, with art. And of course, is my name. There are 65 full color paintings and drawings. And I see that the dog, which is on the front cover and all of the animals inside, what is the muse? Who are they? Well, it's a mixture. Several of them are mine. And the one on the cover was a bite that we rescue. By the way being the oldest rescue organization in Manhattan, that the Jack Russell on the cover is a by the way rescue that I fell in love with. I show up picture of a photo of and I said, to myself, that's a painting. I love it. It is great. If someone buys the book, where does the money go? The money goes into the switch heart animal, alliance foundation. Which.

Did you buy your pet a gift for Christmas? 56% of women were likely to more likely than men at 49%. According to an AP poll. However, it was the kiddies who are more likely to get the cold treatment as 56% of dog owners said they'd buy a gift for the hound of the house, but only 48% of kitties were going to get a gift. In Australia, marriage is going to the dogs. Literally. In the city of toumba, Joseph guizot married his best friend. His 5 year old lab, honey, who he adopted 5 years ago. The couple decided on the location of Laurel bank park after seeing a wedding there during an afternoon walk. Mister guizhou said he looked at honey and stated that could be us. And she didn't say anything, so he took that as a yes. 30 friends and family witnessed the emotional ceremony which took place at dusk, where Joseph vows included you're my best friend and you make every part of my day better. Mister guizhou says he is a religious person and could no longer take the guilt of living with honey out of wedlock. He assures it's not a sexual thing. It's just pure love. And what can I do for you today? Well, I have a 15 year old used to be a feral cat. He's not very friendly. And he hates everything, but he's my good boy. And he stays in the house all day and goes out when we get home and then after dinner he goes out and he comes in at that time. But when Steve and I he did not come in, which is not an initial sometimes he's out on life, but then he comes in first thing the next morning. Well, I have not seen him since Wednesday night. I live in a very wooded area on developed area outside of Fort Myers, Florida. I have combed all things of Woods with my dog, looking for him. All over the neighborhood. And the only thing is we have, we do have wild animals out here. Okay. Coyotes, coyotes, and other predators. And some of these names, if you're kidding, excuse me, I'm sorry. His name is Ziggy. Okay, so give me a minute here. I'm going to see okay. Well, the first thing he tells me is that he wanted to go back to being wild, but he hadn't intended to stay out this long. Okay. So I want to take a minute and ask him where he is in relationship to his body. Okay. He tells me he's still in his body. So that's a good thing. Yes, you're out of it. So they will tell me if they're out of it. He is what from what he's showing me. He is just roaming around there. And there is some confusion. I don't know if maybe he suffered some kind of a something like maybe a stroke or something. Well, he was very upset that evening when the neighbor cats came over and was just acting like he wanted to live here and he was very upset. He was upset about that. Okay, so I would do a couple of things if I were you because he is still somewhere not too far from where you are. Okay. Although he won't tell me exactly where. I can tell him do I assume that your neighbor cats you would not allow to live there, you want him there? No. No, the neighbor cat went home, and we have not seen him since. I want to tell Ziggy that everyone should that neighbor cat back to where that cat had lived before and their face is open for him and you really would appreciate it if he would come back home again because this is his home. And the neighbor cat has his own home. That's correct, because he runs this house. Ziggy runs my house. And Vicky just gave me a big sigh. So I would keep telling him that type of thing and you would do that by thinking about him and when you talk to him really feel like you're connected to him and sent him a lot of love as much love as you can. And make as many pictures in your mind about this being his home. Okay. And.

Well, for those of us who have dogs and cats, regular pets, an incredible, I'm going to tell you about this it's an interactive art exhibit that is custom made, I mean, it must be gosh, I can only compare it to maybe a human being on LSD or something. What a trip. It's made just for dogs and cats, and as I say LSD tater walks in now. Here's the LSD doing talking. We're kidding about the dog. Of course. I mean, this is just so out of this world and the extent to which they went to make this a great experience is incredible. So we'll share that one with you. Hi, Brenda. Hi, how are you? Good. How are you doing? I'm doing well. Yes, go ahead. I was going to ask you where you are today. Well, I'm asking for Kenya. Okay. Yes, central Virginia, you're not far from Charlottesville. I know that you have a question. I have a question about a Turkey. Okay, Turkey. Oh. It's kind of what the star story that but basically what happened is it fell off of a Turkey truck going to slaughter. In the middle of an interstate. And I rescued it to make a long story short. I got it struggled it and got it into the back of my car, took it home, have it in a dog pen. And I know nothing about Turkey. And it's been a couple of days and I'm having a hard time getting to eat or drink. I've tried the wild Turkey feed. I've tried to crack corn and he's drinking a little bit of water but he's off the walking around and seems to be doing fine. Okay. That is a crazy story. You fell off of a Turkey truck. Yes, yes. Oh my gosh. Was he around the Purdue farms or anything like that? They have a lot of Turkey farms around us. And they mass produce them and I don't know if it's the fact that he was too fed because he's huge. I don't know if he's two types of feeding like they do sometimes the force feeding or because he doesn't seem to know how to eat. He's fully feathered. He's, how about how much does this guy weigh? Oh, this guy weighs probably 50 pounds. Okay, so he's a big help. Okay. Well, you know, as far as the sad thing about the Turkey industry is, like, if we cross over to the pets, is that these guys in captivity aren't really like the domestically bread turkeys? They're really not here for the long term. So I actually tend to be bred for really big body size and they really don't live really past a year of age. And they can actually have some problems with their body weight becoming so big for themselves. So I don't know if we're dealing with something like that as far as diet in general housing recommendations I can tell you for turkeys is that we definitely want to go with more of like a Turkey feed. So if you've gone to one of the feed stores and gotten that, that would be what I would say most of these places in the production facility they're not with a big bird like that likely going to be tube feeding a large bird. He should be eating something more on a regular feed scale. You can also try adding in fresh vegetables, fruits, make sure he's got some grasses to kind of forage. And the other thing would be to make sure he's got lots of room because these guys obviously they're pretty big, even though they don't fly. You know, he needs he needs to have lots of room. And then the other thing would be where your housing him, because a lot of these poultry can actually have fear of predators, sometimes they will not thrive if they feel like they're vulnerable. So we can give them visual things to hide around. So sometimes we'll put a perimeter fence. Like a three, three foot kind of guard around the fencing, just so he kind of hides. Shreds. Who's visited him? The wire. See how the wild Turkey's already come into payment? Have you named him? No, have you named your Turkey? Yeah, thank you. Gilbert Cooper. Great. He has a lot to be thankful for, doesn't he? Yes, he does. I mean, he survived the fall off the truck he survived me getting in my car. I mean, you know, I hate to see him just, you know, waste away and die, but yeah, I think he's pretty lucky you two found each other for a reason. It looks like you now have a pet Turkey. Yeah, I was just trying to figure out how to get him to eat and everything. He's just now started walking. So it appears that he's never walked before. You know, because he's really not injured. So he's never walked so I guess he's like I said the way they say them in captivity. Yeah, and they do just they get so big that they actually physically can't support their own weight. One of the big social media platforms has gone through its user database and use some facial recognition things to find cats and dogs and stuff. So we'll tell you what they found from calling all of this information about cat lovers and dog lovers on social media. Hi Leslie. Hi, doctor Debbie. How are you? Oh, hi. I'm wonderful today. What can we help you with today? Well, my husband and I adopted a cat that's an indoor outdoor cat about four years ago. And he's always willing to call it even when we have had when we adopted him or before we adopted him. And we've noticed within the last 6 to 8 months that he's been coming in in the mornings without his color on. And so the first time we thought, well, you know, maybe that's a coincidence. The second time we got a little suspicious and thought well, maybe one of the neighbors is concerned about him wearing a collar that has to buckle. And so they remove it. Then the third time we put a collar on, we use the breakaway collar. And he came in last week without his breakaway cholera. And so we're concerned that, well, we like to have for him to have a call on with a bail so that we can carry when he comes in and out of the house. And we think that that's a good idea for him to maybe so maybe the birds and the animals can't hear it and he can they'll the birds will get away from me. So we're just wondering what should we do about this? Well, it's kind of a tricky situation because, you know, and I've had some cats in my lifetime that have been able to get out of breakaway collars in an indoor situation. So that's what they're designed for. I can't explain why the other callers came off, but I'd be concerned. We do like to have ID on our especially if they're going outside, but if your kitty's getting into environments where that is coming off, we're getting snagged up on things that does put him at risk for, you know, choking, or some kind of injury from that. So as much as we want to keep a color on, you know, if we assume that no human is removing that, you think neighbors are removing it, though, you are assuming that, is that correct? We assume that a neighbor has been moving it because of the they just don't want the cat to have a technical. How about putting a note on the caller? The new one. Just being able to note on and say, hey, call, let's talk about this before you take the caller off. You know? We could do that. Yeah, it seems like you have a steady communication somehow with the neighbor there. Do you know which neighbor? No, I can't live in a neighborhood. And we call it he's an iowan and kind of blocked off by different roads. And so he.

"Joining us. How are you doing Jackson? I'm glorious. How are you doing? Split, you have a book out. Total cat mojo is when it's called, right? It's more than like. Yes, it is total cap mojo. And really, really stoked about it. I really am. It is everything I think I know. One place, you know? So it's really it's been a long time coming. And I'm really, I'm actually really proud of it. So I'm excited. I'm excited for people to get a hold of it, you know? Well, you're going to have to explain something to me inside the book. You have an ideas for creating your own mojo map. What is cat mojo? It's funny because we have a whole chapter also there called KS moho and that was when I was lecturing in where was I? In Argentina. And I'm going on about cat mojo and everything and I'm running around the stage and sweating and suddenly there was like crickets in the audience and I realized that nobody had any idea what I was and so the translator says, can I smoke? Yeah, I got a clue that mojo and it derives from this old I guess slang and it was in a lot of songs in the 40s and blue songs. When you talk about getting your mojo working, you got your mojo on. Mojo is a sense of like inner confidence inner that strut that you have that and it's not you're not trying to prove anything to anybody. It's all coming from this interior place of knowing who you are and where you are and where you belong. It's the utmost confidence. And I always in the book I detail when mojo came to me, it was the concept of John's Travolta at the beginning of Saturday night fever just running down the street in Brooklyn and you see that look as the camera pans up and there he is holding a slice of pizza looking at the girls down the street. That's mojo because, you know. So it's owned Brooklyn. It's comfortable in your own skin or in this case it's comfortable in your own fur. In your own fur. Yes. And that is all connected to what I call the raw cat that we have our cats have this very direct line from the cat sitting on your lap to the cat in the fertile Crescent tens of thousands of years ago. They are very much the same animal. We haven't messed with them very much, you know? So their desire, their primary objective, when they wake up every day, is to do exactly what that cat did. So as we adjust, as we transition from a working cat lifestyle, which we still are doing more of an urban pet lifestyle, we still have to provide the raw cat what they need. And of course, do it in a socially acceptable way. So that's really the centerpiece of the whole book. Do you have a cat? Can you just ask me if I have cats? Yes. Did you really ask that help? I want to know if I want to know about your cats because you know what? Everybody's going to interview the guy they're going to say, okay, tell us about what's in your book, the leader box, and the later training and all of that. I want to know about Jackson galaxy and the animals that are living at your if they have mojo. You know what, some have varying degrees. I have a lot of not a lot. Yes, I do. I have a lot of cats. But and several of them are either Ferrell or sort of quasi or so in terms of their mojo, when they're outside, we have our big catio here and when they're outside of the cadio, they have Uber mojo. In the house, around feet and arms and legs and whatever, less so, but we're working on that. And but yeah, everyone has varying degrees of mojo, but that's the concept. Do you know that's the thing that in my house as well as everybody else's, we have to define what I call the mojito cat that absolutes center, you know, by who they are in the first place and not who we want them to be, you know? I mean not every cat is going to greet you at the door and offer you a mojito and lead you into the house and give you a tour. Some of them may sit like a few of mine. They'll sit on the mantle watch you walk in, give you a little bit of a blank and let you walk by without any without any sense of fight or flight or anything like that. And to me, that's mojo as well. So you don't have to but yeah, we have at the moment, we have 5 sort of base cats, right? Those are the cats who lived here for a long time. We have other cats that are in varying stages of rehab. So I would say right now we have 9 cats, three dogs, and a turtle. And a turtle. What kind of tortoise? Our turtle is a little Chinese box turtle named Sammy. We inherited him when my mom passed and he was 20 something years old and live in the high life. Yeah, he's living a good life here. If you have a multiple cat household, you often have problems. What kind of problems do you deal with at the galaxy household? I think that it's the same problems that we all deal with living with anybody, especially when there's a lot of people in a house is that, you know, we have arguments. We get sick of each other's faces. Just have moments. And I think that's really all that happens here is that there's too many beings. This weekend, you know, a lot two out of the three of our dogs go to day care on a regular basis because we're both crazy busy and they're really energetic dogs. And on the weekends, of course, everybody's here. And when you've got three dogs noncash for the total and two humans sharing the not so big place, that happens. But it resolves very quickly. I mean, the good thing is there's no dispute over territory because of the cadio and we've catified our space and all the basic stuff. We are with Jackson galaxy when we come back. "If you feel like your pets vet bills are through the roof. You're not alone. Apparently the animal healthcare system suffers many of the same problems as the human medical care system. That's according to a new report. From researchers at both stanford and mit now both of those healthcare systems have reportedly seen a huge increase in dollars spent on end of life care lately and there is no denying that we are more than willing to shell out a piece of our savings to keep our furry friends healthy well according to the american pet products association. Pet owners in the us spend over fifteen billion dollars on veterinary care last year and spending on pats. Medical bills has even outpaced that of human medical bills. That's pretty amazing. Data from the consumer expenditure survey shows the percentage of human physicians jumped by forty percent while the number of veterinarians nearly doubled amazing how the field of animals growing now pet owners in new york can now take their furry trusted companions with them to the grave if they wish since the governor has now signed legislation that makes it legal for the cremated remains of pets to be interred with your owners said any of the approximately nineteen hundred. Not for profit cemeteries in new york and those are all regulated by the state the new law. Which does not apply on the other hand to cemeteries that are owned or operated by religious associations or societies comes three years after the state made it legal for pet cemeteries to accept. The cremated remains of humans who wanted to be buried with their pets. Didn't know about that one now. Supporters of the measure cited statistics showing that sixty two percent of. Us households have a pet these days and among the most famous that garnered the most attention in the big apple was Woman who wanted to be buried with her pet leona helmsley with that name. Oh yeah. The hotel heiress dubbed the queen of mean. She kind of got the ball rolling on this. She died in two thousand seven and had in her will that she wanted her pampered. Pooch female trouble interred with her in the twelve thousand square foot family mausoleum trouble died five years ago but back then there were no laws in the state that allowed them to be buried together but at twelve thousand foot square foot mausoleum. That's like five of ninety s Like seven of my house. That's all twelve of marez egyptians the ancient egyptians all got buried with their pets. Why the heck can't we get married. I wonder when it stopped being legal. Because i'm sure years ago in the eighteen. Hundreds of people were probably buried with their pets all the time. I thought it was fascinating that they allowed in new york for owners pet parents to be buried with their pets in a pet cemetery. I mean who would even think of that. But it's a great idea if they if you really want to be buried with your pet but now of course not to do that anymore. Here is the latest in the. Is it safer my pet to sleep in bed with me debate. You know since debates are all the rage get ready now. If you kick your dog off the bed every night you might wanna stock up on some apology traits. Just a warning. New study of one hundred fifty people conducted by the prestigious mayoclinic on sleep has found that contrary to popular belief. Sleeping with your pets doesn't actually disrupt your sleep as much as you might think. In fact it offers most people you know sense of security safety helping them get a better night's sleep twenty percent of the people in this study said their pets did disturb their sleep though but forty one percent believe that having a pet in the bedroom actually helps them sleep better. The researchers said that some people find that sleeping with their pet actually helps them to kind of feel warming cozy but this is probably the most interesting thing that people don't think about most people who complained their pets disturbing their sleep actually had multiple pets in the bed near. that'll do. It just multiplies. The chance that your sleep is going to be disrupted or there's going to be a dogfight on the bed. We don't have that. But they say cats or more because they're more active at nighttime dogs are probably less likely to bother your sleep then again. Is it diminishes sex. "He just gets dirty his a lot of products out there on wipes that you can go that you can go to the store and get a lotta some spray Dry shampoos and and a lot of things out there on the shows that you can go out and buy but if you wanna real quick fix and this works unbelievable and it's good that you brushing combing the dog now because you removing. The dead coach used to doing that. You're going to go to the store and you're going to buy yourself sixty nine cent box of baking soda now baking soda. You're gonna sprinkle learn in the code. Now it's going to do two things it's going to number one remove the oil because it's going to absorb you're gonna sprinkle it on you're going to let it sit. I don't know just a couple of minutes and then you're going to brush it through. Not only is it gonna re absorb the dirty oil. It's going to also neutralize any odors. Any smells anything like that And it's gonna when you brush it's gonna fall off. The dog after absorbs everything and four to the ground. So the best thing to do is i wouldn't do this while you're in your truck actually do this outside of the truck when you stop Sprinkle the dog with it. Brush it through. It's going to be real safe. It's really it's really good for the coat The dog is going to smell good and a really good thing trick with dogs that have folds in their face and some some pugs do. Some bugs don't depending on how flat the faces. If you use that and you put that in the folds it'll dry out any type of moisture that's in there and the begging soda. Portion of itself will actually remove any facial. Ota works really good so good thing. It's nice and cheap and you know what. I think that you'll be really satisfied until you in august and nothing's ever gonna replace a good old soap and water bath but this is something that you can stretch out with a short haired dog. you stretch it out quite some time. They'd be real happy with it so well. That's one thing i was really worried about. Was like the folders face. I mean i get into accuses every now and again and i've been used like those stuff but that's a very good. I think and you can continue using the wet ones but on the bacon soda after you wipe it out with with the with the wet ones. Going with the baking soda. And i'm telling you what you're going to notice that there's no odor from the face and if there's any irritation any redness nine times out of ten that's going to go away as well. I use that. He came in just a couple of months old so very tiny still being bottle fed and he was supposed to make his way to are at rehab center. That houses just oliver animals. But we little slow on the draw. That the concern would be that she had perhaps some kind of safa geel problem. And what sounds what they were describing was actually A pr a which is a Persistent rate eight arch in it is a fetal blood vessel. That just doesn't go away in some animals in its inherited problem We see it in dogs but also in cavs and what that means is not actually can constrict over the esophagus such at some point They may be able to eat drink and get that sustenance. They need but eventually a puppy or a kitten with this problem will not thrive and they will just continue to go down downhill. The problem is that has this little vessel constriction over the asaf against this is the food. So things have to go through. If it's constricted. That means that food and water sits in the biggest of in the throat area and then it doesn't take a whole lot with a little bit of movement and well up. It comes when that happens. You get the lack of the nutrients going in so we get skinny animals. But they're very hungry and they're so hungry they just can't gain the week the nutrients don't get in the other thing that can happen. Is that because the safa is so mushy if you will That food and liquid in the asaf against can actually be aspirated into the lungs and that can lead to aspiration. Pneumonia causes respiratory problems. And they really just kind of go downhill so badly so I know it doesn't help in the pain and have the loss in the manner in which you lost her but I would say that you know knowing that surgery is really the only thing that can fix this type of thing We don't even recommend long term medical management for it because he animals. If she's in the car yet she'll get in the car and she'll be she'll sit down and she looks nervous initial pace around and then cheap amish car sickness. There's kind of two totally different syndromes in dogs and there's sometimes an overlap of them so there's really dogs that have true motion sickness which has just kind of inner ear disturbance. Where you feel like you're gonna lose your lunch and then there's the other component which is really more an anxiety problem and dogs to have. That are the ones that seem to get. Really anxious they trimble. They shake vocalized the pace back and forth. So we have to really look at this in kind of figure out Which situation are we dealing with here. Now from what you're describing you have a pet the hesam anxiety just in the car and some suggestions anytime we have a car travel coming up. I liked to condition towards that. Try to train the pets that the car is a good thing and that it's going to reward you in some way you said you've got your trip coming up in a couple of weeks we've got a little time to work on this and basically what i would ask you to do some homework where we're going to work on getting your job comfortable with the car and that may be something where you start very simply and walk over to the car sitter down by it and give treat and we repeat that as long as she's not displaying anything anxious nervous we don't reward that because then we're actually giving a fuel to that fear so if she looks anxious or nervous. We're just look the other way and we're going to turn her maybe with her leash and make her give her the command to sit and make sure that's a positive experience. We're going to work eventually to feeding treats and rewards really good ones and quitting them in the car. So you know you're sitting around the back backyard. What are you doing. Hey let's go to the car with the dog and when should repeat this over and over and over again and make sure that's a good experience and then we're going to work up gradually to turn in that car key on and keep rewarding her if she shows anxiety or fear. We're going to take it a step back and really for these next couple of weeks. You can work on this and really make that car of good spots dan when we're talking traveling some simple things. A lot of people. Don't do that we need to do for car. Travels heads do best. If they're restraint we want to have face in forward preferably in a seat belt or in a dog carrier and then try not to feed her right before you do any of these heart trip sessions.
