Fiat Chrysler and PSA Group Merge With Eyes On the Future
"And this business. Wars daily on this thursday january fourteenth. Here's a word you hear a lot in january reset you know out with the old in with a new new year new me okay. I'll stop it with a new year cliche now. But two automakers are taking the opportunity to reset to a new level fiat chrysler and the psa group will officially merge and become still lantis this weekend. It's a move years in the making and it's go well. I survive second catch up now. All carmakers suffered in twenty twenty new car. Sales declined factories were shuttered. An inventory stalled all thanks to covid nineteen but fiat chrysler soon to be one. Half of sta lantis suffered a lot. It's us sales. Were down seventeen percent compared to twenty nineteen and when other automakers saw slight gains in their fourth quarters as the year ended fiat. Chrysler saw more read so beyond brushing off a disappointing year. The newly minted sta lantis has its work cut out for it as it contends with the likes of similarly sized general motors fiat chrysler and psa may eight million vehicles a year combined that gives it a slight edge on gm which sold about seven point seven million cars in two thousand nineteen but gm has something to lantis doesn't significant presence in china while gm sold more than three million cars in china in two thousand nineteen fiat chrysler in psa sold only about a quarter of a million combined. That gap isn't sitting well with psa chief executive carlos taveras who became ceo to lantis. He's made it clear that year in up for the chinese market is one of still antennas. Berlin Model Y Timeline, TSLA Stock, Consumer Reports Autopilot Ranking
"Everybody robbing our here and today we're going to start off talking about about Tesla stock obviously a tough day for the markets. Today, we have some news on Mata. Why from gigabytes win an update from consumer reports on self driving technology and some news on the Fiat Chrysler Tesla credit situation. So Tesla's stock today was down four point four percent to four hundred and six dollars two cents compared to the Nasdaq down three point seven percent. So I think most of that move tesla was macro driven the S. and P. Five hundred and the Dow Jones Index had their worst days since. June I don't think volatility should be expected. Of course, we're heading into the US federal election next that's on Tuesday and a lot of places. Today are attributing the down market to a continued rise in covid nineteen cases, and in some locations that is causing restrictions that had previously been relaxed to be put back in place. So for example, I'm pretty close to Chicago. We heard today or yesterday that they are closing down indoor dining, and as we head into winter, obviously outdoor dining can be a little bit less appealing. So that can have even bigger economic impact than it would have during. The summer months for example and places like Colorado there at restrictions, doing things like closing down gyms. So we're seeing this all happen at the same time as the election approaches we haven't heard much on another round of stimulus or other. We have heard a lot about it, but we're not seeing any action there yet, and all that seems to be weighing on the stock. But at least at this point in time I don't see a whole lot of fundamental impact for Tesla. I'd be really surprised if had to end up shutting factory again I think eons comments and actions last time. That happened would make it difficult move politically to do that, but it's also not outside the realm of Boston. So we'll keep an eye on things as they develop. All right next up here we've got a story from Tusla Roddy, and before we even get into this unrest GonNa, add a huge preface that this report is just based on one person's interaction with one tesla employees. So a Lotta Times, information like this can just be completely inaccurate, but we're also here just trying find any little tidbit of information that we can. So I do think we're talking about. So test the ratty got. A message from a reservation holder for a model. Y. In the Netherlands and this person told Tesla Rati quote this morning. I got a call from Tesla in the Netherlands with some questions on my order. In that conversation, the Tesla employee told me that they expected deliver my Berlin build model y in q one or q two of twenty, twenty one they had just received an internal update on the billing process and Berlin and quote. So if we again go back to you this nice little timeline that was put together by Toby lend on twitter, we can see that four. Giga Shanghai. It took about five months ago from the first walls being constructed to the first body and and then a little bit over three months after that for first deliveries if Berlin can stay on the same schedule which so far it's actually been a little bit ahead of schedule from what the timeline was for. Shanghai could be looking at the first body and white sometime in January, and then maybe first deliveries sometime around April or may even March, and again that's based on Shanghai and there does seem to right now at least be a possibility of Berlin dragging even faster the other recent information. We got here was from the earnings call when dramatically no. When asked about the use of the pilot for forty six eighty cells and Fremont said quote we can use our pilot production facility in Fremont to support the new factory and Berlin as it ramps and quote. So within twelve months Tesla. Hopes to get that pilot lion to ten gigawatt hours of annual battery production that's a hundred and thirty three, thousand, seventy, five, kilowatt hour packs, and while it's not going to media, we hit that rate it shouldn't be too long from now where the output is you know maybe thousand or two. Thousand packs per month that would seem to hopefully track nicely along with the model why ramp up in Berlin. So again, on book this, saying take this with a grain of salt but to me, this does seem like a pretty plausible timeline q one or to, and this is obviously going to be even more interesting than normal vehicle ramp up would be because of the new technology tesla will be using in the Monowai. From Berlin I think we're all incredibly curious to see what the specs on that vehicle are give thing just while we're on the topic of motto that I want to. Motto I production is just about to explode. Next year I mean think about Tesla said in the ten Q, they're trying to ramp model white production not only in Shanghai not only Berlin but also in Texas in addition to having production of the why in Fremont came out on production on model y over the next two years is going to be incredible and prices are gonNA, come way down on that vehicle as production volume and look Liz ation increase. All right. Let's move onto the next topic here. This is from consumer reports. This got a lot of media attention. Today we're not gonNA spend on the time on it, but consumer reports today came out with their rankings for driver assistance systems, testing such systems from seventeen different automakers, and they actually have Cadillac supercrew coming out on top with a score of sixty nine and Tesla autopilot coming in second with a score of fifty seven. So of course, a lot of attention on this. But as I emphasized in the beginning, this is consumer reports testing for driver assistance systems.
More companies pledge to give workers time to vote

The list is kind of endless and they've got a common interest. It's about strengthening our democracy. And encouraging participation. Now there's 545 of these companies in total. They basically just want to encourage civic participation. Okay, get out involved. So we're going to talk to the executive director of the Civic Alliance. He's Stephen Levine. He's on the phone with us from Los Angeles is also the co founder of Meteorites, Social Impact investors. Steven. It's great to have you. I imagine you guys have been quite busy over the last few months. We definitely have Kaylie and thank you for having me on this evening. I appreciate it. A CZ you mentioned the Civic Alliance is a nonpartisan business coalition that is strengthening our democracy by supporting face healthy and accessible elections. And by really inspiring every American to participate in our democracy. And I'm really proud of the work that we've seen so many extraordinary cos. Lead this here many for the first time encouraging both their employees and their consumers. Tio specifically active and get out and vote. Can you give us some specifics on what you've done? What kind of what kind of efforts Absolutely. So we've helped many companies, many major employers think about what policies they could have to make sure that all of their employees not only feel supported but also encouraged to vote. We're very proud to share that companies like best buy and Tax office are actually closing their retail locations. Either early or opening them late on election day to make sure that all of their employees have time off to vote. Other companies are closing completely for the day like Fiat, Chrysler on Patagonia, which are literally shutting down all of their operations on election day to make sure that their employees have the time they need to vote. We're also helping companies think about how they can message and provide all of their employees and consumers with the latest information about the different ways that Americans can vote in this election cycle. 20 is definitely a unique election cycle because you can say that again. The challenges represents so so we're really we're really excited that that many companies are are helping to fill in the gaps and educate Americans about about how they can vote early this year. Interesting fact. 99% of Americans can cast their ballot before Election Day in 2020, and we're thrilled that more than 75 million Americans already have. It's pretty just 30 million more than 60 students. It's no forgive me. I'm interrupting you. It's staggering, though. When you kind of get your head around those numbers. It's also staggering that you know, we talked about a story last week. About a Silicon Valley tech CEO that emailed all 10 million of his customers urging a vote for Joe Biden specifically like it used to be go back a few years. It was a no no for CEO or an executive to get out there and talk politically. What's different. We have about a minute and they will come back and continue. Okay, Great. Well, what I would say. First of all, I want to reiterate that specific alliances a nonpartisan all right, No, I understand Organization, but I think it's pretty exciting is that I think companies have started to realize that that civic engagement, nonpartisan civic engagement actually isn't partisan or political. It's patriotic and its civic And I think what we've seen is that because employees are really pushing companies take stands on important social issues. Companies are in turn, turning back to their employees and their consumers and saying, You know what? We will take a stand and we're taking a stand to encourage you to vote and really helped shape our country's future in our communities future and so I think. Encouraging voting and civic engagement eyes really the both politically safest and a really powerful move that many, many companies they're coming? Yeah, I would say employees. Consumers also, you know,

Twenty-Five Years Later, Ford Resurrects the Bronco
"If you're an offroad aficionado or even just WANNA be. This story is a big deal. After a quarter century Ford is resurrecting the Ford Bronco a direct rival to the jeep. Ford produce the Bronco for thirty straight years starting in nineteen, sixty six. The vehicle had only two doors reportedly one reason why Ford discontinued it in Nineteen ninety-six consumer sentiment was shifting toward four doors. Historians say the Bronco Developed Cult Status. After it was discontinued today, the beefy muscular vehicles, a sentimental favourite restored vintage models can sell for up to two hundred thousand dollars with a corporate unit called Ford icons. Ford is Heavily Marketing Nostalgia that division includes the Bronco, a Mustang and a new line of Ford F one fifty pick-up trucks, including a hybrid version, and soon to be debuted all electric. And Nostalgia sells, but it's far from the only reason. The automakers releasing a Bronco for the twenty first century. The company is capitalizing on a trend according to the automaker offroad vehicle, so called rugged SUV's. Twice, as popular as regular SUV's CNN reports that has engineered the new bronco models for quote hard off road driving. You know the kind that allows you to quote. Get far from civilization. An even stay there for awhile. Is the perfect escape for pandemic induced cabin fever. Get a dose of Adrenalin while avoiding the plague. It's a combination made for advertising. Heaven Kit needs to be the jeep wrangler as the Juggernaut of off road vehicles. CNBC reports that automakers have been trying to quote dethrone the Wrangler for decades. Without much success. Even during the pandemic GPS kept selling Fiat Chrysler sold an average of seventeen thousand jeep wrangler every month for the last five years according to the Detroit news last year, almost a quarter, million wrangler flew off dealership. Lots and experts say jeep owners are loyal. To a fault. Still Ford executives have moxie. They're predicting sales of two hundred thousand broncos over the next year, according to Automotive News. and. Keep in mind that the low end version of the new line. The broncos sport won't even be out until years end higher end versions of the Bronco won't be at dealerships until next spring. Ford is doing everything it can to make the Bronco enticing enough to away jeep lovers, and of course to persuade new off roaders to come into the Ford camp that includes besting the ramblers largest tires thirty three inches with whopping thirty five inch tires, Ford says a Bronco outfitted with the almost three foot in diameter tires can easily go through a couple of feet of water models also come with removable roofs and doors. Drivers can store the doors in the Bronco. For, it says. At about thirty thousand dollars, the price of the two door base Bronco comes in at only two hundred dollars more than the base price of the jeep wrangler at the top in a limited number of first edition for door Bronco started about sixty one thousand dollars, Ford began taking one hundred dollar deposits on Broncos last Monday when it released the new line I edition reservation slots sold out within a couple of hours. Still as bullish as the auto press is about the Broncos, the release comes against bleak backdrop for the auto industry. Overall vehicle sales plummeted when covid nineteen emerged shut the industry down for two months recently, both Ford and GM reported second-quarter sales declines of about thirty three percent from a year earlier jeep parent, Fiat Chrysler did even worse with sales down forty percent. And that puts a lot of pressure on Ford to live up to its promise of adding a billion dollars to the bottom line next year through Bronco Sales. And it adds pressure Chrysler to keep jeep at the top of the OFFROAD HEAP Stakes is high as the boulder strewn rocky mountains. The war between Bronco in gene. We'll be fascinating to watch.

Cruise so pilots, I've been crew and, and the actually aircraft and that's what's keeping them going. In fact, one of the wet Lisa companies told us their phones were ringing off the hooks. Now, our main story this morning, Fiat Chrysler has decided to withdraw its offer to merge with the French carmaker Renou, according to people familiar with the matter. The company decided to pull out after the French government resisted, the deal due to a lack of support from Nissan. Nissan is in an alliance with Renault to find out more. I rang up Nick cost of in Paris, who's been closely following the deal. So Nick, what happened what happened? Good question suit, essentially, what we have is deal between we have FCA proposing to merge with Reynaud. However, Renner has been in tonight's with Nissan for twenty years, and therefore shares of many parts platforms is fairly integrated with Nissan, now, the French states decided that it would not back this deal without the explicit approval and without the explicit support of Nissan and Nissan. Has not really been involved in negotiations. Nissan, essentially abstained on the votes and said, we need more time to study how this would affect business and for the French state that wasn't good enough. They wanted me Santa vote. Yes. And so, different states, proposed delay said let's try and work with Nissan to try and get them on board and will reconvene in five days and at this point, John Alcon, who's the controlling shareholder if he at Chrysler decided to pull the deal of pool his proposal, and so the deal Fennell has fallen apart. What has the Chrysler said, well fee Chrysler fuse, and the deal is, is not possible with the with the French state at the moment, because they've been in negotiations with the French state for the past week, different state has been asking for a number of concessions, for example, once a board seat on the new entity. It wanted a four year term for the news CEO of the. Company, and he wanted that to be Reynaud chairman. There was a number of other things. And so see at Christ is essentially saying, we've had enough of the French states demands, this has become untenable, and we can't do a deal when east conditions, and what does the failure of this deal mean for the car industry in Europe? And in the US, does it help rivals, like maybe Volkswagen, perhaps, I mean, it's very difficult to tell at this stage in the US, this would have meant said Nissan, getting together with Chrysler in a way, which which would obviously bought brands like ramen Jeep closer closer with the Nissan's. So that doesn't seem like it's going to happen now. I mean what it means I guess, for the car industry is, if you speak to end this most of them think that Fiat Chrysler needs a deal right now and because then they haven't invested enough in future technologies, I'm so we'll see who they end up with whether it's another French call maker of maybe Paju, or whether.

"And the markets Fiat Chrysler has abruptly withdrawn its offer to merge with French carmaker Renault, this is after Renault's board on the brink of approving the deal postponed, a decision for the second time the move by Fiat ends deal. That would have created the world's third largest automaker the US and Mexico failed to reach an agreement to avert tariffs on Mexican imports to the US. The threat is aimed at pressuring Mexico to mitigate the flow of migrants from Central America to the United States after the news broke and talked ended without a deal president from said, progress is being made. However, it's not enough earlier in the day, Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell told administration officials the president should delay imposing tariffs on Mexico until he can personally make his argument to Republicans in congress. Crude oil trading further into a bear market, that was after the US government said. Total petroleum stockpiles in the US grew by about twenty two million barrels last week for the biggest increase in nearly thirty years. WTI in the New York session was down three point four percent to fifty one sixty eight right now. We are trading at about that level in the electron accession incidentally, crude oil. This is New York. Crude is down twenty two percent from its April peak. We check markets every fifteen minutes here on Bloomberg gets Memorial Day in South Korea. So no trading in Seoul. Right now in Tokyo. The Nikkei is higher by two tenths of one percent. He's open to considering an interest rate cut with inflation, too low and trade tensions, causing business uncertainty even though US economic fundamentals are solid and Evans spoke with Bloomberg's Michael Mckee in Chicago think we've been looking at the data. You know, talking to businesses and thinking about how the forecast is evolving. I still think that the fundamentals are solid for the economy. There is uncertainty and you might be wondering if businesses or delaying a little bit more taking stock of, you know, with the international situation. Looks like I think it would be prudent to take a look at, you know are setting monetary policy as we do each and every time. And as I've said. You know earlier little nervous about the low inflation rate. And so, even though we expect it's kind of temporary I think that, that by itself could be a reason for a little bit more accommodation. But I think we're just gonna have to look at how things are evolving cut.

"Big mainly to get bigger to companies spending big to get smarter. The pursuit by Fiat Chrysler of merger with Renault is the latest in a growing list of deals motivated by corporate executives abiding desire to avoid becoming the next blockbuster. John stole columnist of the Wall Street Journal says some companies are buying up everything in sight in hopes of finding a tech wonder kind like net flicks. Others are combining forces with rivals to answer tech puzzles that have yet to be solved. John set this up both companies about equal size and you kind of wonder after years of Chrysler going to try to get a bigger company to merge with them. They've kind of looking at the company can be shoulder to shoulder with in terms of volume and revenue about the same size. You sort of wonder, you know what's driving this, continual motivation at? Chrysler to merge. And, you know, I it seems like desperation and in one of the things you look at is, is on the horizon, maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but in the near future, you know, most people are pro who are in the know are predicting dramatic change in the auto industry. Whether it be autonomous cars, electric cars. Connect tippety on down the line at Chrysler has not been well positioned for that. And so they wanna find a partner who both has the technology, but also has the capital to help them come up with solutions for the day when cars in sales of cars out different than they do today. So how does that relate to blockbuster, blockbuster video many moons ago ahead nine thousand stores in the United States ever ubiquitous everywhere every bit remember, like the Pinero McDonald's, and, blockbuster, you know, every street corner? So there's one left in America today. And, and you know there's reminded about people telling me you should go to this blockbuster in Oregon. And I just I'm not in this guy. I so I'm not interested. But reminded it didn't have to be this way many years ago. Netflix offered itself for sale to blockbuster. They turned it down. And they, they went in search of big sort of empire, mergers, empire-building mergers, with, with other rival video stores, rather than thinking about technology. So they'll be wants to do that, in, you know, twenty nineteen nobody wants to with on a great technology, offer just because they're out to build around fire, right? John stole business columnist at the Wall Street Journal. His piece is called technology drives deals, because no one wants to be the next blockbuster video will that while end up being transformational the your video example, there, could it be between Fiat Chrysler and Renault? It could be this stage center for something transformational. Nobody has really come up with a magic bullet in terms of commercializing autonomous cars. The more near term technology of electric cars is as evidenced by tesla a real money. Loser. It can drive you deep into debt in deep into reading, and nobody's really touching that in terms of, you know, mass scale production other than tesla. The strategy. Now, you know, Renault has stable of electric cars. They've been selling for many years, but not not not necessarily successfully could be transformational keeps them in the game. You know, Netflix in streaming, which is the alternative example that we would talk about with, with blockbuster was laughed at and was sought to be a second rate way for people to consume movies, who wants to watch movies over the internet. The internet is key in flow in these movies are kind of second rate and so it took a long time for that of to evolve thing. You don't want to do is have slim resources, and such a dim view of the world, be to regional and you're not you're not putting enough eggs and enough basket set your you're missing. Big technology evolutions when they come more partnerships at thing that Renault Nissan. Renault Fiat Chrysler, could be open to hear if they get more scale if they if they're selling nine million vehicles, a year together, they may be more attractive partner for that with Bank technology innovator, whether it be Waymo or some company. We don't think of today. They come to them to, hey, we would like depart. With you the same way that Netflix, one to kind of partner with blockbuster. Thanks, John, John stole columnist at the Wall Street Journal. Meanwhile, Detroit News says a potential top between Renault and Fiat Chrysler could be good news for US workers since American plants are more profitable, and those working the lines in the US are safer from likely job cuts that would begin in Europe. It's twenty minutes.

"The thing is particularly interesting about this is Mark unit made a name for him, so, well, I you made any from south saving Fiat, and then saving Chrysler, a lot of people in the states, forget that Chrysler was near vision, two thousand nine hundred year body, but he became an even larger than life figure that he already was in two thousand fifteen when he made this very public case about the need for consolidation in the car industry. So that became his thing he was the cheerleader for. Consolidation. The current history except the only problem, I guess if you will is that he, he was known for having a really aggressive negotiating style for being a very hard bargainer. So we've heard from several people that they were wary of just sitting around the table with him afraid that you may walk away with the deal that you weren't just that enthusiastic about. So that was my CUNY Goan was also a larger than life figure, you know, he had put he had done something that in the car industry was thought impossible he had found. What, what everybody thought was the third way, right? There was the do it yourself was the merger which often didn't work. And there was this alliance that he had put together with, with Renault Nissan later, Mitsubishi, he, of course exited the scene late last year when he was arrested. And, you know, he he was replaced by, by new by new chairman who as but by all accounts has gotten on well, with the chairman join Al Kuna Fiat Chrysler, and, you know, a lot of times, these deals, not just in the car industry in general, if we look across across industries, you know there has to be the industrial. Of logic or anyway, the people who are engineering, the merger need to think that it makes sense today, but you also the, you know, it really helps increases the the gears there. If you have some sort of report between the two sides, and it looks like that's what really happened. So it was sort of a perfect alignment of, of things here that led to the announcement of this deal. What are the potential roadblocks? Yeah. Well, that's, that's a good question. Because one of the problems often when you have this kind of deal is that I it's hard to sell it as a merger of equals, for example, when this new company comes out what percents going to be held by each company, right? Of, of the of the pre merger company in, in this case, they managed to do you know, a real merger of equals can be fifty fifty so that in theory shouldn't be a problem. But, you know, these boat, both of these companies were no for the French in yacht for, for the Italian Chrysler for the American side of via Chrysler, these are companies that, that have a hundred years and sometimes more, you know what was founded in eighteen ninety nine. So these are national icons, if somehow. You know, the PR firms of these companies are not able to control the narrative in somehow, the narrative comes out that Renault is, he's taking over Fiat Chrysler in this man, one of the key issues. We don't know where, where the effect of headquarters of this company is going to be the fifth turns out, it's in Paris, and it's not in Detroit or turn, you know, that's gonna be a sticking point. You can find our full coverage of the proposed merger at WSJ dot com. You might know ADP is the biggest name in payroll. But that's just the beginning because ADP is transforming the way great work gets done with HR talent time benefits and payroll informed by data and designed for people, that's ADP always designing for people. On to markets in Asia markets, were mostly muted after US markets were closed on Monday for Memorial Day. One thing that's cheering investors. "Twenty seventh and thanks for being with us on this Memorial Day. We'll have more on what this day means to us a little bit later in the show. But we're starting off in Europe where the EU just wrapped up parliamentary elections in several countries, including Britain, Germany, Italy, and France, nationalist and populist parties have been on the rise. And pro Europe voters turned out in huge numbers to counter them for more, here's marketplace's Stephen beard. Steven, thanks for being here. Nice to talk to you, Molly. So I know the media loves it storylines, but this was billed as no less than the battle for the soul of Europe. Right. Those who who want this much closer union than nationalists, who wanna looser collection of independent states sticking with the story line idea who won, not the nationalists. They didn't make the big breakthrough that many were expecting some of them have very well. I mean, Laker, the foul rights Italian party did. Very well. Marinela pens party in France dwell, but across the EU and in the European parliament, these nationalist, anti EU parties are still in a minority. So they'll create a lot of noise going forward, but probably won't be able to disrupt the EU all all seriously hinder moves towards greater integration. What about the more on the national side, the Brexit party, which seemed to do very well, in Britain, how much impact could that have then on European parliament and the U overall? Well, I did extremely well, considering this party didn't exist. Six weeks ago. There's a conservative party leadership election about to stop now, Theresa May is stepping down and the Brexit party success could well, persuade many conservatives that they should follow the Brexit party line, and go for a clean break Brexit. However, it must be said most British. Lawmakers are against a no deal Brexit and could veto it. And if you add up the votes for all the policies, the support Britain remaining in the u they outnumber the Brexit party vote well, and it seems like there is increasingly loud, talk of a second referendum, how likely do you think that might be if does look increasingly likely that there might be a second referendum because these people who are arguing that Britain should remain in the EU have to deal with the fact that three years ago seventeen point four million Brits voted to leave the EU and the result of that referendum has not yet been delivered? So maybe, we'll eventually have to go back to the people, but it remains a highly highly contentious issue in British politics. So I want to pivot a little bit. We've talked about tensions, of course within the EU. I wanna talk about economic tensions between the US and the European Union specifically. On auto tariffs, especially with a big proposed auto merger on the line today. The promise to reject the Trump administration push to limit imports of cars and parts from Europe. That's just happening today. What does that mean for the future of that trade relationship? Well, this is potentially a very serious escalation, EU Komai because exports run into the tens of billions of dollars. I mean it's actually in fact that with ten times European steel and aluminum exports to the US. So the e u is determined to stand up to President Trump's threats giving every impression today that the commission has not been in any way, weakened in its stones by the European election result, marketplace's Stephen beard. Thank you so much for the time, aren't you Molly? Now, let's explore that auto industry news. I just mentioned, their yacht Chrysler, has reportedly proposed a merger with the French carmaker Renault it would. Create the third largest automaker by production behind Toyota and Volkswagen group. But at a time when automakers are laying off thousands of workers and expecting the global market to weaken. Why try to get bigger marketplaces, and the Euler explains that one if this deal comes to pass the merger would volt this new company ahead of General Motors and production numbers with the capacity for making almost nine million vehicles year right now, things are profitable for FIA Chrysler. Thanks in large part to Jeep and ram truck sales in the US. But the demand for new vehicles in America, and China appears to be slowing so carmakers are intimidating another downturn at Niedermayer's senior editor from ability technology at the drive dot com. When the downturn comes all of a sudden, your cost structure, is too big for you might have avenue that you're making on your sales. So a merger could allow this company to combine production and maximize efficiency Sam fee, Ronnie at auto forecast. Lucien says, logistically, this merger make sense because it allows. Fiat Chrysler, and Renault to merge in platforms, and engine programs and consolidate a lot of costs, but consolidation can mean job cuts in the French government may look carefully at the deal with that in mind. If the deal does go through though, this combined company would also fill in important, gaps for Fiat Chrysler, especially in electric vehicle. Production again at neater Meyer Chrysler is just way behind. And Billy doesn't even have a pass to catch up with those those markets, and they developed Renault on the other hand has been investing heavily in technology research and development. Thanks to a partnership with Nissan. It's still unclear who would actually run this combined. Entity though, Renault is reportedly studying the proposal but gave no timetable for a decision. I mean either for marketplace. On Wall Street today markets are closed for Memorial Day, European markets seemed mostly relieved by the results of those elections. We'll have details of a different sort when we do the numbers. It is officially cap and gown season for college graduates, which means a few million people in their early twenties are hitting the job market, and it's a job market. That hasn't been good for young graduates, since before the great recession. But with one stubborn problem marketplace's Mitchell Hartman explains. The national association of colleges and employers reports companies plan to hire nearly eleven percent more graduates than last year and.

"The passing of former Fiat Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchi own who had been in grave health since this past weekend, and there had been some rumors and that was pretty much hit over the last couple of days anyway as to what Mr. martians health status was. We find out on this Wednesday morning. He indeed passed away at the age of sixty six to start this particular segment. Let's go back to January twenty fifteen. As we mentioned earlier Mr. Marcio on a regular here on the Paul W Smith shell and to our knowledge engineer, Brian Morton. Looking for this tape might have been the final appearance of Sergio without here on the program. Again, this is at the auto show in January of two thousand fifteen. The real issues. I think we need to get smarter about how we robbed his businesses and all we've gone through this incredible explosion back in the nineties. Even in the eighties above buying car car companies an aggregation. Than creating monsters of unmanageable size and proportions I think the FIA. Cries ver- merger is a classic example of how something can be achieved transnational not saying that we couldn't have, done better that we've done but you've done very well I think we've done all right in terms of establishing links across the global organization and starting. To get the benefits of the coal. Management of the industrial reality that we face globally and if it's true for Fiat. Chrysler must be true for a larger. Entity than we are and so I know what the benefits are of being able to extract substantial reductions and the, capital that. We consume the this is the biggest you made reference to the two billion dollars in the. Minivan, does not inconsequential bets if you get that car loan that is. One painful adjustment. That you need to go through to make sure you can't square right if you can find a way to share baths of that caliber Across a, wider array of vehicles on across a wider, array of brands of the you'll do better so, you still are looking if there's that but more importantly. I'm receptive which you know. The reason why some of these things get raised and especially in. Environments, like this is to try and provoke a thought pattern in, other seals and other entities. That may be interested in pursuing the same path I mean reference to the fact that it's very hard for seals to look at this that irrational way I made reference to the. Fact that I don't know of, any Turkey invites himself through a thanksgiving dinner and the problem. Is that when you do these things unfortunately the level of redundancy that comes first and foremost in people's minds is that CEO level and so people are very reluctant to embrace santio that caliber because it involves their own personal. Affairs I think you need to, look beyond that in NC what else you can do Sergio Marchi own right here on the Paul. W Smith show again going back to January of two thousand fifteen Referencing at that point Richard the relatively new merger with the Fiat Chrysler. At that time and how very important it was and. As we now know certainly. Very important to the viability of Chrysler and his contributions I I'm sure going on all over the nation today If you're just waking up Sergio. Marchionne has passed away at the age of sixty, six we found out last weekend that he was in grave health he had shoulder surgery that. Was, what was referred, to at the time shoulder surgery last June turns out there was a little bit more, to it he. Was diagnosed long ago. With invasive shoulder sarcoma that type of cancer according to the American. Cancer Society develops in the, bones and connective, tissue unfortunately during the procedure he suffered a stroke and at. That time it is now reported that he suffered ear reversible brain damage he will be remembered the amazing thing is and we discussed this, a, little bit earlier folks really know automotive background but he I it just goes to show you. The mind that he had, it would be like one of us ending up in the. Nuclear, physics field that we have no background in it It but you good into it and you have success I. It's mind blowing well he, he he proved, that you don't have to be a an expert in a. Lifer in an industry to take control of one of the largest companies in that industry and do a great job You know Richard dead manning been around many many. Automobile fuck over the. Years and your statement that Sergio, is at the top speaks volumes. Of the top, of my list Steve you've got a great story about the, conversation you had with him about your. Jeep, might have been he was quite the people person and I'm almost positive it. Was long time it was. A little bit earlier but Sergio's at an auto show. And he said I just got? My first, Jeep and I don't know why but I. Shared it with. Very approachable I I had this, type of automobile for the longest time at least. Ran, out I wanted to, try Jeep, I got one Grand Cherokee and Sergio started asking questions why do you like it caller I mean and it was just one of those deals he was interested that's why he was so Successful All of a sudden I'm doing this focus group with Sergio Marchi. Own and you, know because and I left that conversation, thinking, wow this guy cares about the. Product, now we know that Jeep is carried the company Yeah, he, made he says he made by. And, large the right decisions on how to maneuver Fiat Chrysler in a position to one survive to thrive and three. Have a future where the company would be much more attractive as a partner to another company because one. Of the things he failed. At several years ago was getting a merger with a bigger company he was courting General Motors he. Thought General Motors should come in and acquire Fiat Chrysler or acquire the Chrysler side of Fiat Chrysler GM GM looked at, the balance sheet for Fiat and all the? Money that they owed at that time and said why should we come in and save Fiat but Mr. Marshall Yellen was very open and, honest about the reasons that that he wanted that to happen and when. It didn't happen well he went to work, and now they have a thriving profit making company and as far as? Mike, Manley is. Concerned Mike Manley the head of Jeep and ram truck who now has replaced Sergio Marchionni on my question and I guess the entire industry question to him we'll be how do you follow Sergio Marchi own well that being said everybody has had wonderful words to say. About Mike Manley that he is the man for the job and I I would imagine Mr. Manley understands. The big shoes to fill. And he's taking over under very unfortunate circumstances that being said we shall see the direction moving forward. With Mr. Manley all right folks six fifteen time and we are taking you back to the traffic center because guess what, your Wednesday morning rushes in full effect with?
