Keys to Better Product Marketing
"Of the things that they you thought. You had some great insights. And i think this is really interesting because it is a challenge especially the bigger the organization is is once you've got you know changes in messaging strategy for a product. How do you get that. Messaging implemented throughout the whole funnel. You know like. It's easy to change the website But how does how do you get that way. Down to the sales team so one of the interesting things about product marketing. And if you ask. People who've been around product mark does and you say what this marketing do right. One of the first things that comes out of people smile seems like djing positioning and this is great and one of the key areas of weakness. Say in a lot of product is out there and myself included. Because i've made a mistake many times early. My career is creating messaging positioning. That is not used by the rest of the company so if no one uses it like did you actually do anything. one of those things right And happens because in many cases We might be just isolated from what is happening outside of the company and what is happening our own departments so we create is great messaging and positioning gopher zach size when he writes something and we have the document right and we share the document and we hope that people are going to read the document. And they're gonna own. I love and i'm gonna apply i'm gonna use it right away. That's actually not the reality like no one wants to read your documents. Say yes. i'm going to do that. So the art to product. Marketing is not coming up with messaging and positioning. That is is the best ever. But he's actually helping your entire company adopt the right messaging and positioning right so as a product marketer you gotta work with such as your sales counterparts. You've got to work with people and support. You gotta work with people in the marketing team. And you got to work with the ceos engineers. Everyone is working around the same message. the the the fundamentals. Daniel start seeing The reaction where people started adopting that the bass rolled out a revamped messaging and positioning the been far off. They actually started from the top with the ceo was always talking about that new direction or the story or how positioning it and once you have the seals executives talking about it and once you have that right that everyone is okay. This is for real. Yes that's why we have this on the website right. So that's one of the elements of having like that top down approach. Now there's a corollary to that which is if the message does not work when you're in front of a customer right. It doesn't matter what the ceo says right is not gonna work. So that's why you gotta work both ways. There's a top down and bottom of approach and For people who are trying to go through this process day. I'd say the best starting point for creating the messaging is actually trying that yourself with a customer so it could be customer devise reports it could be What enough to do is just like sitting down with sales reps and going on sales calls and trying to message out yourself right and is almost like looking at it from a product launch perspective. You gotta do like an early access program or a beta program. Whatever you're calling it you're gonna try message tests it out. See how that works. And you're gonna find out at some things are good. Some things are not good comeback. And dan when you're having those conversations with the co with the ceos you can talk to them and say well. I've sat through like fifteen fifty sales skulls and this is what happened rallies. Now just like well. Why does this resonate. Why do we think this is great. Is it has. It actually has lex right so it's really putting together like that. The process your mind and it can be a daunting at first especially if you're in a large organization but that's where you start recruiting people to help you to do that. And the best folks were that alexei navalny so if you have a good partnership is sales enablement team. They can also help you on. What are the best ways for us. Festus message to pair up with the sales engineers as the sales reps and get the message. Tested few fasted. And then you go back and you started rolling that out from the top down.

Race: Can We See It In Our DNA?
"June morning in Washington DC, and we're in the White House's East Room where a press conference is set up. There's an expectation in the air. Everyone stands and in walks President Bill Clinton. Clinton walks up to the Partium and faces a room full of photographers reporters and scientists behind him on a TV screen is some scienc- that very cheesy imagery, a double helix, and the words decoding the book of life. Good morning. We are here. To celebrate. The completion of the first survey of the entire human genome Clinton is announcing that the human genome project had hit its watershed moment and mapped out the human genome for the first time reveal nearly all three billion letters of our miraculous synthetic code and on that stage. One idea that was front and center was about race race had always been this concept that carried a ton of white socially. But did it have any scientific meaning will now this project had mapped the DNA of five people who had ancestry from across the globe, including Asia, Europe and Africa. So what did they find? Well that day in two thousand it was announced that on a genetic level. These people would basically no different ugly. One of the great truths to emerge from this triumphant expedition inside the human genome is that in genetic terms. All human beings, regardless of race or more than ninety nine point nine percent. The same one of the lead scientists on the project took the stage and drove this message home, the concept of race has no genetic or scientific basis. There's no way to tell one ethnishity from one another. So these guys might have thought they were closing the door on the idea that race was biological. But actually this announcement left the rice door ajar because ninety nine point nine percent the same that means zero point one percent different. So in the twenty years since this announcement, what has science found out about that tiny bit of difference between the soul does race live there. Because that's what some people starting to say. If you're looking at someone from China, you're looking at a man from Kenya. Yeah. There's something different about them. So your instinctive understanding is correct race is real these are biological fats. They're not sociological construct. And this idea that new science shows the races, a real it's taking hold in dot corners of the internet where white supremacists using it to make even bigger claims. The genetics proves the white people of the smarter superior rice. Okay. So what's happening here for centuries race has been a political and social idea, but where does science fit into this today? We're to answer the following questions. One. We'd new science can we see race in genetics and two if he can what those differences main like could one race be smarter than another. When it comes to race. There are lots of opinions, but then Dez science. Yet. This is actually an area science has missed up for a long time. We'll tell you about that too. Science says race is coming up just after the break. Episode of science Festus is brought to you by dropbox dropbox is more than cloud storage. It's an entire collaboration platform. Why teens can ship projects coordinator, sinement and communicate Finlay discovered? What dropbox can do for your team at dropbox dot com slash flow. That's dropbox dot com slash flood. Welcome back today. We're talking about race. And we're asking scientifically does it exist. And by that we mean that when you look at how DNA can you see consistent differences that separate people who are black or white or Asian or what have you, but understanding the science behind race is super complicated and messy poly because it has this dodgy scientific history. To tell us about it. We got professor Dorothy Roberts from the university of Pennsylvania into our office and put a microphone in front of a I have a giant puffy thing in front of my mouth fuzzy it's furry it's furry and pretty quickly. We got into the history of race and science thirty told us that really began in the seventeenth and eighteenth century in Europe. It was the age of enlightenment. Science in Europe was having a heyday and scientists were racing to understand the world around them. These typologies were classifying all of nature, they were classifying plants and animals and rocks. You know, other aspects of the natural world, and they included human beings. Colonialism was in full swing Europeans with sailing to Africa, the Americas and Asia and seeing all these people who looked really different to themselves, and so they started to categorize them too. And this was a particular pastime of this highly respected botanist, cold Khaldun, Nias kirwin may Swedish typology just had a very prominent enterprise of classification. Call slaughtered people into several categories, including European African Asian and native American. Oh, yeah. And he had some wild cod categories to like there was this one called you win lupine ass- or get this. Wolf boys for children raised by wolves really widdly that one didn't catch on. But what did catch on with some of the descriptions that he and other scientists gave? Of each race always giving Europeans the best adjectives. He's Dorothy white people are characterized as beautiful, and they're also characterized as the most rational and black people are described as prone to violence to laziness to illness to mental disorders, call also described Asians as severe and haughty while native Americans were reddish and obstinate. All through the seventeen and eighteen hundreds scientists ran with these ideas, claiming that you could see real differences in the bodies and brains of the rices and very quickly a clear scientific hierarchy was formed with white people at the top and everyone else underneath them. And all of the scientists thought they were being objective. But we can now see in hindsight that they were being woefully subjective. That's even too mild a term they were being racist. And part of the reason these ideas was so powerful was because they were very useful for justifying slavery as well as colonization more. Generally after all if science says that Africans or native Americans are less group of people, then it's okay to take them land. And enslave them it made the. Domination of white people over other people seem as if it was just following what nature had planned.

"They want to portray him as a dangerous threat. And then what Luke also repeats every single of these Roman officials that he stands in front of the pretty much just keep saying same things I've got I've just kind of wind up there statements about Paul here. So Claudius Lucius whose Roman commander who said aren't used the terrorist. He after he arrests him. He writes, a letter to Felix the governor saying here in passing this guy on to you. And he says I found him to be accused over questions about Jewish law, but under no accusation deserving death or imprisonment. I don't know what on earth to do with sky. You take care. You know? So we send totally. Yeah. So Felix hangs onto Paul does note to do with them for years and Felix moves onto another job. And so another governor comes Festus, and when he is talking about what to do with Paul. He says people are bringing charges against him not of such crimes as I was expecting. I know what to do with terrorist. Right. Right. But they had points of disagreement with him about their own religion and about dead, man. Jesus who Paul surged to be alive? I'm at a total loss about how to investigate this kind of thing. Good. Yeah. Yeah. He just doesn't know what to do. He says it again in chapter twenty five I found you committed nothing worthy of death. And then he's appealed to the emperor. Paul so tired of getting hung up mistrials because he can tell it's all just a ruse. He's just like you guys are keeping me here without any good reason. So he says I appeal to Caesar can do Roman citizen. And so he says, well, I always appealed to the emperor. So I'm quite happy to send him off. But I don't have anything. Definite about him to write to my Lord. It seems absurd to me send a prisoner and to have no charges against him. But here he is. Here's where we're at. You can see Luke's playing up. This theme of like, this is ridiculous. The Paul that Christian would be accused and held in prison when they don't represent the kind of threat that the Romans normally imprison people for the here is impr-. Listened because the Romans don't seem to care, but the Jewish leaders really really care. That's right. Exactly. But they're not in charge. That's right. They can't kill themselves. Correct. Yeah. This correct. Yeah. As an occupied people group, they would want this guy. He's been causing so much trouble. The same reason and actually Luke's again. He's laying Paul story on top of Jesus story, the Jewish leaders right could arrest Jesus. But they had to get pilots to sign off proves crucifixion. The Roman governor says the same portraying Paul and Jesus parallel here. The last time the Paul is in front of Festus, Paul actually gives us speech, and he tries to persuade Festus and another official there to like listen to the good. And so Paul Festus interrupted. This isn't chapter twenty six emphasised says, well, Paula was saying this in his defense Festus interrupted in a loud voice, Paul..

"At the hugh l carey institute for government reform at wagner college now let's turn to a missouri trial where the stakes are very high for j and j the company is defending itself against claims that it sold its iconic baby powder knowing it caused ovarian cancer it's the biggest trial yet in the recent wave of cases against j and j twenty two women are trying to link their illnesses to exposure to his best isn't a company's talk joining me is howard erickson a professor at fordham law school howard will you explain how the allegations here are slightly different than in prior trials in this case the plaintiff player mark lanier is pushing a theory that traces of festus in hell compounder caused ovarian cancer in these twenty two women on and that's fury that hasn't been used in in the prior ovarian cancer cases so is that a risky theory i think the smart theory because there has been recent plaintiffs verdicts in cases involving measles toyama that is an festus linked type of cancer and i think the plaintiffs lawyer in this case is hoping that those prior verdicts that have found that there were traces of festus in talcum powder hoping that will play out similarly in the ovarian cancer cases but it does require new science and it remains to be seen whether the jury will believe it mark in years representing the women and he's one of the preeminent plaintiff's lawyers in the country's billions of dollars verdicts are par for the course within its his presence changing the scenario or changing it up a little well he's he's a big time trial lawyer i mean this is a big trial as you mentioned it is the biggest case to go to trial in the in the talk and powder litigation with twenty two plaintiffs and all that so this is really this is the big bad and they are bringing up you know the homerun hair and as you say he is accustomed to winning big verdicts in mass tort cases it is his first tell trial however this case going to be about the science and what the jury believes about the science or will it be about documentation of whether or not j j new it's product contained asbestos i have to assume the plaintiffs will want to emphasize what j and j new because you can always find a memo somewhere showing.

"To the six fact festus ask paul if he's willing to go to jerusalem to be tried there in verse nine now keep in mind that the jews have no proof and paul just stood before france this and said i am innocent and here's where the case should have been thrown out for us this cannot find one thing wrong with paul oliver first this is a politician he'd like to do a favour for the jews and earned their support so he said the paul are you willing to go back to jerusalem and and face the charges there is that well if he'll go back the jerusalem that'll that'll come the jews down but what festus did not know is that both god and paul had other plans paul was not going to jerusalem he was going to rome you have a a man festus who has the authority to actually order paul to go to jerusalem what is preventing him from making the order why does even asking fall are you willing to go back the drills of would you be willing to go there because god sovereignty is here which brings for the seventh facts paul said i appeal to caesars court in festus agreed he should go to rome versus tend to 12 also the festus i've done no wrong i love that verse 10 i've done no wrong and this you also very well no now you think about that he's saying to festus i've done no wrong and you'll know it here's the leading political judicial figure in the world this part of the world he knows that he hasn't done anything wrong but he will not release them all said look i'm not afraid the di mi i mean he knew jesus christ he sort of i done wrong i'm ready to die i don't fear death i know the lord jesus christ our slip out of this world and i'll go into the.
