Did they make off road tires? and then I, know that he had a gold mine. Well really actual, Gold Mine at some point. Yeah I don't know about that because wasn't he the one who went and like. got smokey eunuch in a gold mining. Maybe. Always feel. That way. But this one is like, I should have known about this dude there are no google results for Mickey, Thompson Gold Mine but that you know maybe it's true we have to go find Mickey Thompson's gold. City slickers to. All right So let's just get into it. Mickey Thompson was born Marian Lee. Thompson Junior on December seventh nineteen twenty eight in San Fernando California. He went by Mickey and not marrying because in his own words quote a girl's name would mean even more fighting. I do like the name Marian it's pretty cool. Yeah. Like that, he said even more five eighty. We'll see. Yeah, he. Likes to get into it the San Fernando Valley home to Ventura. Boulevard and Mulholland. Drive was a fitting birthplace for a kid who would become defined by hot rods and dragsters. The valley is one of the original cradles of Car Culture I. I will say it still is today it's very like I went to see us you northridge up there in the valley and it is a muscle car town everyone drives either a charger challenger Camaro or Mustang it's pretty cool. I haven't met many people from the Valley with a valley accent most liked. Girls and Valley boys that I've talked to are from like Hollywood and Venice specifically. Venice. But never really never never from the valley there's I. Mean there's a lot of people. See us you northridge is a commuter school. There's a lot of people from that area that go there and I never really heard that typical valley you know yeah, I think it's kind of a pass a kind of thing. Now it was big at a time I. Don't think it's as big anymore you gotta meet some people from Venice. It's very much alive while not Nevada is on saying I think that the the new thing is. Not New but like the the big vocal fad was the vocal fry God. Yeah. Dashing vocal. John. We Sold our show got. Because we have less views per episode than Donut does perfect. Indirectly, Kris Kardashian directly sourced us. Did you see that onion article that was like the show ends when I wanted to? Rise into, the ocean. I will say Kendall Jenner Architecture Digest open-door episode is pretty cool. She's got a cool house and that's all say on that that rich girl has a cool how it's not just a cool house James. California's on fire right now guys so much so that I got gotta check engine light yesterday because I was putting on the new intake, my car, and then like I stopped because I needed another tool and then I put my older back together. But I didn't tighten the thing for the math enough and I just sucked in a bunch of ashish and it like Oh. No. Covered my maths I have a math cleaner if you need it. I had a check engine light a few days ago. Was not fire related. It just turns out that when my coil packs was bad and I had to change it out and not fixed it. So I'm pretty happy. "Recoup here on the imbalance history of rock and roll Marcus how you doing not bad. How about yourself today? Well I'm doing good but I'm a little nervous because we're trying something different. Today we're going to combine an episode of five favorites with a studio gas well, not in the studio on zoom? Resuming. With Harold Cherokee, he's got a great book called stolen moments. How many years Herald were in La is a seem to time I was born in La so in La for sixty three years. Only been back here for three years moved back here three years ago. where. Were you living before? While I was living in the San Fernando Valley in Sherman Oaks. Dan Is area that you. which is just just over the hill to Hollywood, which is about fifteen minutes from where I live great place to be mad that close you know was wonderful. As a kid growing up there, where did you live and how did you first start plugging into the whole strip in the scene and everything that was going on there? I was born in L. A. Downtown La but then as a kid. Moved to Glendale California which is just right. Next door. They're nice sleepy little town and I basically grew up there went to high school there the whole bit and was there up until like nine hundred ninety and that I but I moved to the valley when I got married a second time and Just. been there all my life and. I was well connected when I was a kid started going to concerts when I was twelve. I concert was the Beatles. Hollywood ball no. That was all I. I went to the last la which was August. Twenty nineteen, sixty six and that was the Beatles Esta left. Day before the last one, which was candlestick. But that was my first concert. That right in the second row air right there. Six dollars? Ticket dollars can you actually hear the Beatles because? I HAVE THEM IN DC and said, the girls were screaming so loud that she couldn't hear the Beatles from where she was sitting in the stadium Yakking you know here and there it wasn't obviously crystal clear. You did have screamed grounding out of most of the time, but you could hear your somewhat mind blown dude, that's all I wanNA say or I'll deal mind-blowing. Well, that'll be a great entry into rock and roll life for anyone. And Talk to us a little bit about the book you were taking pictures around the L. A. Seen for quite a number of years in have some stunning captures in this book in all, it was going to concerts as a kid I used to play around with little Brownie camera when I was nine and ten years old and so eventually when I was able to graduate up to actually getting a decent camera which was. Like nineteen, Seventy, eight, seventy, nine, eighty at one. I really started pushing myself into the into the scene as best I could. It's all proven yourself in the beginning paying your dues you know you're not getting paid when you start out, it wasn't the solely for the money was the for the love of the whole thing. I always had a visual of capturing a great moment. You know whether it was in concert or meeting. Somebody in a hotel room that's what I started doing. Did you build a black and white dark room in your house? My father had a black and white dark room. Yeah. I didn't my house. I had a friend that helped me out a lot a couple of friends that end our rooms and I would bring my films as soon as I shot it the next morning I was there almost at the crack of dawn. We gotta get this process you know right away. That's awesome. You know would do the proof sheets and then big out of print I'd have sometimes I'd have to send something out right away most of the time in the beginning, it was just doing it and getting it done. So I could actually look at what I shot. That's all part of the beginning anyway trial and error is how you learn from a day to day thing you know 'cause I'm self taught I didn't go to school for it and I just I always wanted to do that. You know just take pictures because my father. Was, a newspaper man you were for hearst for the Herald, examiner in La A., and that's how I of got into it. When I was a kid was he would always take me down to the office I used to look at all the photos and the photo room with saga offers, and then I go to the pressroom and watch the paper roll off the presses at night with the greatest greatest experience you know the newspaper game sets how I got into want shoot black and white for falls. What was the first concert? You Shot Elvis Presley Whoa. Seventy six year before he died he he never he didn't come to L. A. and seventy-six closes. He came Long Beach Arena and I had tickets through a friend who is very well connected into Elvis and getting good tickets. So we had some really good seats and that time I think I'd be twenty five bucks to see John a few pictures. They didn't really come out that well. So that's why nothing has really been seen on that because I nothing came out that good at all.

I guess that Oregon and Washington are supposed to have it as well. But what that does is it lessens the AA number of places we have to import. The electricity. Oh, yeah, Of course. I made it to also with the pandemic and they're cooling areas where people can go malls, etcetera. How do you do that with social distancing? "It is Hey so what what's going on over there what's the word on the street I know that you've been extremely busy and and by the way the work you're doing like collecting the information and not necessarily concentrating on on exactly what's going on the street but why it's going on you've been terrific on this body unbelievable thanks so much yet one of the things that we've been trying to figure out over the last few days is where is all the trouble coming from because clearly the bulk of the people who have been hitting the streets with the signs with the demonstrations with the protest had nothing to do with the mess that we've seen over a few nights over the weekend I mean the worst of it seem to be Saturday night in the LA's Fairfax district and then there was something of a repeat performance in Santa Monica and we saw some of it to go down to Long Beach and certainly some in the San Fernando Valley although it seems like and check me on this if I'm wrong but it seems like over the last couple of days the volume has been turned down on the unrest and and the looting and the arson right it seems much smaller and not quite as many people involved so we've been trying to find out who are the people that are responsible for the trouble and in some other cities not here in southern California but in the Midwest in back east there was word spreading that there were groups of outside agitators I think is the right buzz word who are coming into town and causing all the trouble we want to find out if that was happening here so we got hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of booking records from arrests that were made beginning last Thursday all the way through yesterday at midnight and lo and behold the people who've been locked up on the most serious charges not the people who get arrested for sitting in the street and volunteering to be arrested as an act of civil disobedience rather the people who are out to do harm allegedly and have been nabbed by police in the active perhaps looting or vandalism or arson who are they they're all from southern California for the most part they all have LA county addresses there are a few flyers from Fontana and maybe some from the antelope valley but for the most part from the corner of southern California we found I think five or six people who were from out of state I want one from Michigan and one from New York one from Chicago but it you know LA is a town that's full of people from out of town so it's hard to tell if those are folks who came in to LA to cause trouble or they just happen to be wrapped up in this so as a non it's not mostly outside agitators then you're saying it's mostly southern Californians granted we don't know who everybody is this out on the street but all of this small slice of the people who were arrested on the most serious charges felonies here not good no not little stuff they're predominantly from southern California and for one reason or another most of them are already out of jail in fact most of them were out of jail within twelve hours of being arrested we've been looking into that as well hi you have the number of people being rearrested none that's that's one of the other interesting things that as we look through the records beginning Thursday night again through midnight last night we got all the names we put the names in a huge spreadsheet and alphabetize them looking for repeat offenders and at least as far as the felony cases go we didn't see any wow granted that's a again a small fraction of the people that were involved because not everybody that was out looting in doing terrible things got arrested it's only a fraction of them they did on top of that it's a a fraction of all of the people who got locked up the numbers were hearing pretty staggering between Thursday and today it is well over two thousand people that have been through the booking process most of them again on those low level charges for violating the curfew order or failing to disperse when police declare a particular demonstration and unlawful gathering that's going to be the hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of those hundreds there's you know maybe a few hundred that were booked on suspicion of felonies so that's the group that we're looking at and then trying to extract out some information that tells us more about what the heck's

"fernando valley" Discussed on KCRW

"Most of the day but the San Fernando Valley they might see a bit of sunshine by the afternoon five of six this is All Things Considered from NPR news I'm ari Shapiro hosting the from my home studio and I'm Mary Louise Kelly hosting from NPR headquarters in Washington another week another round of staggering unemployment numbers six point six million more Americans filed for unemployment last week that is nearly seventeen million total who filed in three weeks and is unemployment spikes Republicans and Democrats in Congress cannot agree on how to help the Americans they represent today Senate Democrats rejected a GOP proposal to send additional money to small businesses Democrats say they agree more money should be available to taxpayers but lots of questions remain about where the first three hundred fifty billion dollars they allocated are headed well joining me now is senator John Thune a Republican from South Dakota he's among the highest ranking Republicans in the Senate we've caught him on the line from South Dakota senator welcome back to All Things Considered thanks my ladies always nice to be with you glad to have you with us so we had house speaker Nancy Pelosi on the show last night laying out what she wants what Democrats want which is you know is to include an additional two hundred and fifty billion dollars for hospitals states and local governments and I just want to play you what you had to say much you respond this is her speaking about the Senate legislation as it currently stands the bill that they put forth will not get unanimous support in the house it just won't Cynder soon if this is dead in the water in the house and if Americans are desperate why not agree to a five hundred billion dollar package well I mean I just think that the amid the ongoing crisis in which we get told you know businesses and workers are clearly struggling I think that and disappointed that the democratic leadership blocked what is critical funding to provide additional relief to those who need the most to the point that they're making about other at why they had other dollars to other programs we've already authorized dollars other programs none of which have been distributed yet the first hospital dollars you're actually going out today so we don't know what we're going to be we don't know what's working what's not working what we do know is that the the paycheck protection program which is the program designed to assist small businesses and help them keep their workers employed by getting them hundred percent guaranteed forgivable loans if they use them to keep their employees employed is running out of money and so this is a bipartisan program it's one they actually support and I think we need to we need to get past any kind of partisan delay tactics since in American people's really don't want to see that is there a risk so if Republicans seem to be the ones advocating for less money at a time when many Americans feel financially desperate well I think that that and I don't think it's a question of less money I think we bill already I guess we've got you know we have checks going out of their bills presence talking about another round of those checks we've closed up the unemployment insurance account said all the states it is less money to I mean the Democrats want to spend an additional two hundred fifty billion dollar sang date date they do but they wanna build pocket they want to put it in our areas where we've already allocated huge amounts of money hundred fifty billion to state local governments a hundred billion over a hundred billion to hospitals and that money has been distributed yet and so they're saying we want to add additional to this without even knowing what the media's and all are or were simply saying as you know it's what these dollars get out there and then let's figure out and says what the need is and we're coming out of our members are more than happy we're gonna do whatever we need to respond to this to get folks through it where's the discuss next this is Jim out of money at stake upwards of well upwards of two trillion already passed the president has removed the inspector general tasked with overseeing how it is spent Congress can't convene to hold oversight hearings where is the accountability well I mean there will be a person that steps in the Spektr general obviously there's not doubt that position is not going to be vacant it is a concern is that that inspector general was dismissed well I mean I think we have the members of the house and Senate might not always agree with the present personnel decisions but at the end of the day these are all people that serve at his pleasure and we want to make sure that that position filled it's filled with somebody who is a professional and not not political insult bodies they were paying a lot of attention to that in some of our members of our expressed concerns about that move in a letter and will will we will do the oversight center Grassley is four letter on there asking for an explanation about Cision and it Romney says Tarun Susan Collins it's yeah it's a number of Republicans correct that's right yes so we'll we'll we'll do the oversight that's our role at her job yeah it will try to get some answers one election question if I may before I let you go what needs to be done to make sure that every eligible American can vote that did that every eligible American has access to a ballot in November you've given the chaos that we saw unfolding in Wisconsin this week well I guess we'll have we will have a better sense the November election the general election the ways where there are lots of primary elections are happening in the next month or two and those are I thank state by state they're figuring out what's the best way to make sure close elections get conducted yeah but you know we have invested a lot of money with the states to make sure that they can conduct elections that are that are clean that are free from interference and my assumption is that by the time the fall rolls around and you know we're getting serious about a general election that if somebody in this country washable they'll have the opportunity to vote I suppose my question is should Congress included voting access measures in any of these relief bills state that dollar sign did pass well I think there there has been money added to the the resources that were putting out there they were pumping out there for the states to make sure that they can conduct elections and they have all the necessary equipment and and security measures etcetera to protect our election system and keep it keep it free from interference but I don't know that in you know in terms of the specific legislation last couple weeks that has been designed response which is the greater the crisis that there are measures in there other than additional funding for the state we have I think a lot of sound very capable of states who are focused on making sure that they have good solid clean elections where everybody has an opportunity to cast your vote senator John soon Republican from South Dakota senator soon thank you thanks partially to Marvel is one of the many open questions about the new coronavirus is whether the season will affect its transmission the worst outbreak.

A Chat with Andy Cohen, Co-Founder of Beverly Hills Motoring Accessories

"This is it manner. Part of the cars that matters equation has more to do with the people that own them and drive them and love them that it does about the cars themselves. That's where my guests dandy. Colin is really just exactly the kind of person we WANNA talk to get a sense of of how cars that matter have affected him. How in many ways? He's been one of the arbiters of taste that has helped to determine Herman which cars do matter. India president of Beverly Hills motoring accessories company that began in one thousand nine hundred seventy six back at a time when well cars were. We're not quite the uniform transportation pods that they are today. So we WANNA talk to Andy about a lot of those things Andy. Welcome to the show and We look forward to learn a little bit about your car. Is that matter sure. Thank you very much. I was at a young age. Twenty years old. Living in New New York Long Island to be interested in cars at that time was very looked down upon. What part of Long Island did you go up on? Great and what year are you talking about. Say Graduated High School in Sixty four so in sixty four. You think people look down on someone who was a car aficionado in New York. Oh boy do over at Roosevelt raceway and near Roosevelt field where they had all those great straightaways and we could see what our cars could really do when someone had to give somebody some cute girl the pink slip of our car before we showed off the new engine. We put into a car that would otherwise have gone very slowly and then a surprised everybody with the power behind our hot Rod. I would bet that you ruled the roost back. Then well I I did that I could. Everybody remembers their first car. The ones they saved up for even built from scratch per andy talked his father into buying a sixty four pontiac. Tempest tempest within three twenty six cubic inch v eight and a three speed stick but then six months later they came out with that. She te'o and I'm thinking God. Why didn't may have that when I got my dad by car so I have the scheme us what away for the weekend with my mother to Florida and I said took me and my friends we're GONNA make this tempest into GTO? So I went into a reckoning. You heard I bought a three eighty nine cubic inch motor. Because that's what they were. You're from a Grand Prix and I proceeded to concoct a story that I was riding on the boulevard. I hit a rock broke the oil pan at Emmett if the engine I didn't fall out. Yeah so have this game I went and get the motor from the wrecking yard. What to put it in it was completely different than the GTO engine and it took four months? Let's get everything all about at the play hood at the custody headers. I mean everything was different. My Dad was taking a bus and very mad at me and I just said New New York wasn't a place for me. I didn't like the call. I didn't like the weather I didn't like crowds. They didn't like anything so I said southern California's it so to move out here. You're sixty seven nine hundred sixty seven. I didn't know anyone I didn't even know which way to go so I got off. The Plane Got Century Boulevard. went to the four or five Rui and said go north or South. I don't know because I didn't know anyone turned left and went north. I got to the top of the pass going down into the San. Fernando Valley was September thirty degrees hotter as they went down into the valley. I loved it because the hotter the better so I went down. The Hill got off at Ventura. Boulevard saw Holiday Inn and kind of made that my center for a few years Earth. A great story. I don't even know if that's repeatable then Robert. He moved out here in sixty seven. That's right at the man that's when you wanted to be in the car scene gene so it begs the question Andy. What was your first car when you got out here? My first car that I built actually was a nineteen forty four woody. That already had a three twenty seven. I'm an engine in it and I actually have restored three times. They still have. It's black and has corvette motor independent suspension drives drives like my maserati fantastic so I got the combination combination of of all those things and I actually bought my first Ferrari in nineteen seventy eight. It was two three eight one of my friends who have bought it from was far Dillard to Mexico and he said Handy you interested in buying Daytona spyder. I said sure tell me about it. This was a nine hundred seventy eight. It was owned by a prince. Turki I think is still around his predecessors are in Newport Report Beach Daytona spider and ill will not one of those fake streams ruined and in fact talk about like before the Internet. The only way I could find out if it was is a railway. Todo Spider was semi telex the primary factor. And then three years later. I found out that that car was the first Daytona spyder made. What a fantastic art art? That's one of the cars of everybody's dreams. I mean they tone. A spider is an iconic thing and boy is certainly created a sensation. Such that there was so many saws all taken AAC into the roofs of perfectly good Daytona. coupes that yeah. They ruined a lot at Daytona Coupe. They shared that one hundred. Twenty two daytona spiders for all years and it's still one of the most sought after valuable cars. Of course I sold it a long time ago. Well those are the stories. That'll be another show cars that matter that we wish we still had but it I think that's that's the part and parcel of the process to you. Know we're just custodians of these things and I think the real the real Enjoyment is yes Being able to kind of cycle through an evolution of cars in our stable. Unless you're one of these guys that has the resources and the and the the Kind of mental wherewithal to encompassing a garage. Full of hundreds of cars. It's it's too much of a good thing and I think being able to cherish a prize that they tone a spider a couple of other special personal examples. That's what car ownership is really all about. What was your first Special Cairo? Oh Gosh my first. Special special car was the first one that I could afford. That was quite triumph in and of itself and not a triumph literally it was actually a BMW sixteen hundred and Back like Nice start. Well no nobody knew what those things were. They were just little ten shit boxes back in the early seventies but they were quite a handful for a guy learning the whole essence of vehicle dynamics handling dynamics hammocks what does it take to actually make a car do certain things and those were manual back. Then they were all manual and You know you really had to work hard to to make that thing go fast. You know the old all saying you know you can have more fun making a slow cargo fast than a fast cargo slow and it certainly holds true with something like that little forbidding or BMW. Would you want that Car Oregon today you know. I actually tried to find bill. I'm sorry I sold a damn thing but you know when you're a college student and you're kind of starving. You have to do it. You have to do. Actually I had different priorities forties. I sold it to buy a stereo. I remember that guy that came to buy it. I was trying to sell it for twelve hundred dollars. Exactly what I paid about. Maybe a year before so this guy comes to my mother's house where I'm staying over the summer and he was kind of a shifty looking character. I'm not sure where he was if I had again. I'd say someplace like Transylvania and after talking a little bit of negotiation he says I'll give you six hundred dollars and my monkey a said. Oh boy I love monkeys and stuff. But I'm in college. Listen I got a roommate and I rather have the twelve hundred bucks. I figure it was like an organ grinder monkey or something like that but Needless to say we did a cash transaction the BMW MWR away. I've been looking for ever since and is the monkeys fill around so feeding you. I'm not you q m three sixty three. If anybody ever sees. He's a black California played out there with those numbers. Please let me
