How Eminem Helped Save Detroit

"The year is two thousand eleven. The event super bowl forty-five the pittsburgh steelers versus the green bay packers. Aaron rodgers was mvp. Christina aguilera sang the national anthem. The black eyed peas performed the halftime show in truly fergus. Fashion it was peak. Two thousand ten's in every way but the biggest moment of the event was an epic two minute commercial titled born of fire better known by its catchphrase imported from detroit as marshall eminem. Mathers drives a chrysler. Two hundred through darkly lit detroit streets and an instrumental version of his song. Lose yourself plays in the background. A gritty male voice growls. What does a town. That's been to hell and back know about the finer things in life will. I'll tell you more than most you see. It's the hottest fires that make the hardest steel and hard work and conviction and the know how that runs generations deep in every last one of us that we. That's our story now. It's probably not the one you've been reading in the papers. The one being written by folks who've never even pin here don't know what we're capable of marshall. Eminem mathers parks chrysler outside. Detroit's fox theater inside a black choir. Ads their voices to the music from the stage as marshall walks down the isle onstage. The rapper turns the cameron. Says this is the motor city and this is what we do. The what we do was clear. Detroit has always been the center of american car manufacturing. But how did the city get to the point of needing a super bowl ad to sell itself. What was the helen. Back referenced in the ad and what was the story written in the papers. It was false then. Was there a true version. Ready to be uncovered

"She doesn't feel too bad but then loti comes back and the truth is revealed that the reason lottie left because mrs jerusalem mother was so horrible nothing to do with mr amber and the deceit is being enabled by the one night school must have missed abrahams so that was the twist. I'm quite cool. The characters are very over blown almost to the extent that they can become comic. And as i was thinking about this i was thinking well does pretty much the same thing you know. I mean we've got the one night school must who keeps turning up. Why does he keep turning upon the blue. It's almost like an addams family story. Oh how in costano or something like that. Of course mrs. jostle is like lurch. She's this huge woman who just goes on about domination. And she's very very unremittingly unpleasant. The nicest character new system is tilley them there. She doesn't get a big pop. And i was very fond of. Because she's she's a good whole she just what she's told and she does well she gets weary and he's endearing is like save. The cat. blake snyder's like snyder. For those that don't know at the kind of a guru of screenwriting and he said to make somebody as a joke but to make makes me make character warm. Get them to save cat. Yeah so if you character something nice to an animal that india's the audience here so he has his mind with tilly. And i think actually that ma- you know hume claiming he knew what he was doing. His writing is really strong. They sentence construction. He's easy to read. He uses some formal rhetoric so he uses enough for a so. He repeats the same phrase the beginning of Sentences in a string and dystrophy so he does the same at the end. So this is a guy in new is doing so. I think he's deliberately. It's not deliberately made these characters larger than life. And as i say dickens does the same thing so this is late eighteen hundred so maybe that was what people wanted to read. Then it can become almost comic. You got to be careful and he you can't really keep the horror but he manages to have some actually quite chilling moments particularly out there in the midst as i said what more to say about it. It was nice reading a character. Yes where's he from the app. This is probably norfolk. A maybe lincolnshire. So i was bitten to northern braley. But my got away with it by by remembering the demand is a commercial traveller for a yorkshire firm south. All out i'll be okay. I can get away with that. But what was nice was if you if you rebuild like e f benson or m r james or molin. Their characters are very middle class with this guy working for a living. You know he goes round so he. He seems more down-to-earth and i enjoyed reading him. Yeah so it was a yawn really. It was a great story yawn. I enjoyed enjoyed it very much anyway. We we've spoken a lot. So i'm probably not going to tell you about the seagulls although the very noisy my daughter's got a tattoo is what they do. One of them teaching you the to drive. "So that was the sound wilco by fergus. Hume let me tell you a little bit about fergus. So the first thing to say is he's proper name was ferguson and that was after his mother's maiden name. she was merry ferguson. So he got the first name ferguson. This wasn't uncommon in period to use the mother's maiden name as a christine name for one or more the children but he preferred fergus. And fergus was born in worcestershire. in england. though he's father was glaswegian doctor and we presume at this time an eighty. It's every asylum had its doctor and his father was the the doctor the steward of a county corporate lunatic asylum. I did my thesis and my master's in mental health on the development of the system from the polos. So the were the were they. Salim's were originally the houses as well and then they developed the idea that people who are mentally ill needed treatment rather than just kind of being locked up developed during this period anyway. He emigrated age. Three with these data mum to dunedin in the south island of new zealand. And he's dot setup the ashbourne hall. The name of the lunatic asylum in dunedin went to school. The tako School for boys. And then the university of tag otago's the the area around dunedin that and he tried to become a barrister and was admitted to the bar and then jumped ship when to melbourne in area and became a barrister clock in melbourne however had literally missions and he wrote place but nobody would look at them that failing and nobody had anything to do with him. In fact then somebody stole one of his plays and put it on to their name and that was his bid of publicity saying that you know look with plays. He studied whatever the market at the time. Probably had a kayla. Ticks report feud debuted if you have a self published books you know what that is if you don't you don't but it's a market report of what's what's selling the idea. Is you look at what kind of book cell. And you're right that kind of book so there was a mystery at the time so he thought he'd write a mystery and he wrote. This story called the mystery of the handsome camp. I'm set in melbourne in the poorer areas of melbourne based on this bestseller and it was nobody would push it so he published himself a paid for five thousand copies and sold out within three weeks on the on the crest of his success. He sold the rights to the book. And then it went on to be one of the most popular mystery novels in the lake victoria in late nineteenth century. But he didn't make any money and it was said that a study in scarlet by conan doyle was inspired by that book and so shallow. Combs was born ounce of old fergus. Hume's work and fergus hume. Then after he wrote more books became successful. Went to england. Ended up living in essex. Now we never married and he lived as a lodger with different people so we don't know even if he was gay and because of the game in couldn't actually come out and they were just live with friends but it doesn't look like that because he lived with the man and his wife for a long time in essex little place in essex and he was deeply religious although we hope not like mrs jars l. of this story and he went round in his later life lecturing to To help reform young men and talk different societies and then died left. Only a modest amount of money in these marked is an unmarked grave in sunday in essex. So an interesting character and we see we wonder we wonder what our lives will would look like say if somebody had just done the research me and would would say you know ball at such and such a place did this. Did this this an an little snap. Shell has our life anyway hume he. He died in nineteen thirty two so he wasn't So he was old was out six thousand eight hundred sixty five to nineteen thirty to come on everybody. Fifty five forty five seventy seven. Oh that's not bad. You know especially in those days so there was sounds interesting character anyway and going to this story the sound walk. Well the sun one hundred thirty novels and this is a collection of short stories. And just as you wrote mysteries you can tell. He's a mystery writer actually from the form of this book. I think this this story the collection it's from the dancer in red and is almost a classic ghost story in some ways with with the with the impress of a mystery story. So i'll tell you what i mean by that. So first of all the function of ghost stories is very often. Revenge wrongs will be punished. Bible in its in greek myth as well the the debt and then hamlet the the dad want revenge so that is its first theme that this man amber is dead and he comes back and first of all humans believe that maybe our our narrator may be at risk but it turns out these not in a sense that means the stakes so high. So it's kind of lessons attention a bit for for us as the audience that we telling him you know here. He is written hundred and thirty novels by. I would tell them that you make the stakes higher. But that's only revealed a bit later on and the twist as nice twist is that it turns out we we kind of come to the conclusion that probably misses jaws has killed the guy. Mr ombu lured him to his death in. Quicksand reminds me of old taza movies now. You've probably aren't old enough but you may be enough to remember the black and white tuazon. That used to come up. We used to watch you on the saturday morning. And they were always falling in quicksands live just on the coast and we have some pretty dodgy sons there and so this resonated actually what resonated with me. There's that story here. The tide goes a long way. We're in the west coast there on the east coast but the tide goes out and lots of sandbox and the channels of water run between the sandbox. And of course they can feel in behind you because of the way channels so you can be on a bank and you can turn around and you have to wait. And this has happened to me when i was younger You have to wait chest high through the water at one particular time. It was misty and i got disorientation and i didn't know which way was which and i was actually going out to sea running across the sound but heading towards a sea and then a right to myself and that was pretty scary so that actually was a little frisson for me. Authorities thought he's description of the ghost. The creature of the mist was really good. Actually the way he described it really appropriate. Here is a slow down. When i was doing them because i thought that was good so what i wanted to say. The twist was of course. Mrs. jostle is old old school old testament. Greg grandmother and the soon as punishment is not much love in it. It's about punishment insane and And so she and she says vengeance is mine saith the lord supposed to leave vengeance to the law but of course she takes it in their own hands and kill them on but she kind of can feel okay about that because it's still vengeance after all in sin is still punish so.

Excellent okay and you've been a columnist of senior in the epoch times and popping up all over the place you're pretty prolific speaking on economics Precious metals all sorts of things What i want to dry into today too though is How economic affecting alberta these days. Because we're in such a tumultuous time a unity is at risk across the entire country more from the stress from the west. We've ever seen i think. And there's a lot of economic implications from this instability or moving toward secession or just threat of it. Or if secession really does happen so there's a whole lot to unpack there but Perhaps if you could speak for on. The current economic is operatives in a lot of stress right. Now we've got a lot of resources a lot of ability and certainly a lot of will to to help our economic circumstance but we seem to be stunted these days. Yeah yeah sure. So is actually great date on this. The cd hyphen institute atop think and think tank out of toronto has done all sorts of data analysis of projections regarding the canadian economy and basically the view is that unemployment will not return to normal until about twenty twenty four and the same with economic growth that we're basically going to struggle to return to twenty nineteen levels this year. We won't basically going to be losing two years of growth and naturally as as you know you live in. Alberta alberta is perhaps the most hurt by this current scenario you have both the the energy industry and tourism with the rockies which are enormously impacted and mild view and. The detailed results of the vaccine trump have been submitted for peer review in a medical journal and when published the team at oxford hopes. This will help answer. Many of the questions which have been raised astra zeneca says it already has all the data it needs to submit the vaccine for approval around the world and this should happen imminently however it is hoping to amend a separate manager trial of the vaccine in the us around a third of the thirty thousand. "The script that he was reading from on social media as soon as we possibly can I can't think of a time not in Fergus in not in the Rodney king riots of the early nineteen nineties at no point in this country's history not in the race riots of the nineteen sixties have we ever seen a war like this but I can't shake one thought ladies and gentlemen because as one liberal bumper sticker slogan arises in this case de funding the police dismantle the police another liberal bumper sticker slogan is systematically contradict it whatever happened to the anti second amendment slogan only the cops need guns think anyone really believes that anymore any true believer committed leftist and yes we do have sound bites from Minneapolis common council president Lisa Bender who is saying look it's a privilege you are privileged if your house gets broken into she she obviously said that this morning on CNN we got Minnesota's Attorney General Keith Ellison we've got Minnesota congresswoman he'll auto mark all saying yes we want to de fund to the police Ellison did a great job dancing around the question on M. S. N. B. C. yesterday but this is become mainstream thought I was talking to my friend and colleague before the show J. Weber and we were discussing how this is the most radical left wing proposal that either of us have ever heard of in all of our years of covering the news and we have seen some crazy radical stuff in J. said this was the sort of thing that you would hear the dumb kids safe from the back of the lecture hall when police issues or race issues were discussed dark how about if we just get rid of the police and everyone would laugh because it wasn't a serious proposal will suddenly it is and quite possibly the most amazing thing to have happened over the weekend with the fact that Minnesota or excuse me Minneapolis is left wing mayor Jacob fry the Justin Trudeau clone showed up at a black lives matter rally but because he didn't want to de fund his police department because he didn't want to abolish the Minneapolis police department he was booed off of stage he was heckled into leaving the rally and he did he walked out in shame he looked like a child who had just been scolded by the teacher hang dog expression on his face walking slowly through a crowd of protesters yelling shame shame shame shame what's shameful is the fact that we're talking in this country about how we cannot possibly judge an entire class or group of people based on their belonging to a particular demographic group I II someone who is a black person someone who is a Hispanic person someone who is a white person yet the exact same people preaching tolerance preaching most people are good and I do truly believe that remember folks I am the king of recidivism statistics there is not a crime problem in this country save for about five to eight percent of the population who are committing almost all of the crimes now I'm also the king of proving every single thing that I have to say on this program conservative thought not just talk isn't just a slogan like de funded the police because nobody can actually tell me how this would work the only way you can possibly do you fund the police or dismantle the police department is with negotiations from the police union what do you think the likelihood is that the Minneapolis police union is going to allow every single one of its members to be out of a job zero less than zero we can talk about police union reform we can talk about the end or the the the the change to the doctrine of qualified immunity where an individual police officers law enforcement officers or any government employee enjoys a certain amount of protection immunity from lawsuits or any sort of legal consequences through the civil justice system if they're acting under the color of law if they're acting in their official capacity I am totally supportive of the idea of reforming police union contracts across the country and I'm totally supportive of the idea of re visiting just what the doctor in a qualified immunity means and showed me these are the reasonable steps that reasonable people would suggest on reasonable stupid people suggest abolishing the police department without a single clue as to what would replace them rapid response social workers what does happen if your house is being broken into what does happen if you've just been shocked do we train social workers and how to solve crimes or is the point the crimes don't get solved because ladies and gentlemen sadly this is the culmination of years if not decades of a systematic war on the rule of law and the justice system waged by an increasingly radical an increasingly mainstream left wing of the Democratic Party it started with the war on judges a war on sentencing a war on prisons a war on the idea that if you do the crime you should do the time it continued with the war on prosecutors prosecutors should not recommend any prison time they should not accept any or propose any plea deals that include a single day in jail for violent behavior first socially deviant behaviour what's that what that is resulted in is tragically ironically a systematically worse environment for black neighborhoods which are disproportionately victimized by criminals remember the same five to eight percent who commit every single one of the crimes they commit them over and over and over this element is been emboldened by the idea that no matter what they do they're not going to go to prison no matter what they do they're going to stay out on the streets will get a slap on the wrist and then maybe a slightly harder slap on the wrist and a warning that if they come into the third strike they're not output might get a slightly harder slap on the wrist all of this behavior has all but been legitimized by a justice system in the court room and in the DA's offices that are working together with the same socially deviant people to ensure that there are consequences for socially deviant behavior and the victims in all of this and the tragic absolutely maddening irony of all this is that the victims all of this ridiculous mentality are disproportionately the same black people who we have been saying over and over.

Where exactly have we found you you're talking to me in Dickinson North Dakota this is a single hardest leg of the trip because North Dakota has less charging less fueling infrastructure than any place in the country and so I've been learning some lessons about how to manage an electric car when there's almost no place to fuel that sounds intriguing any close calls where you were stranded on yes I left Minneapolis on Sunday and I know I'm not GonNa make destination of Fargo when have to stop in this little town fergus falls and I know I have enough battery to get there so I'm going down the road enjoy myself really windy day and going along and I'm noticing that the cushion the difference between lean how many miles the cartels me I can go and the number of miles actually need to go it's narrowing Mike I'm maybe we should use it off sixty five nights falling it's raining and I have no other options because there's just simply unless I begged with someone to plug into their dryer outlet there's nowhere to church and so I finally ended up limping off the interstate into this town of Fergus falls and ease into the brewery which it turns out as one of the only places to chart a brewery wow okay able to charge there and since the charging is slow rats ad to spend three hours at a brewery senator night so now you have the challenge of sobering up before you can get back in myself to only two years I was like you've been under control of what y'all are calculating is how much cleaner electric cars are than gas cars raid because electric vehicles say there's zero emissions but of course the electricity powering them has to be generated and that results in carbon missions what what have you found in terms of how much better for the planet these might be well we've been rigorously calculating the carbon emissions of the charging were doing and that has to do with breath the power mix in that individual state that state uses a lot of coal the emissions are going to be higher if it's a state that uses a lot of hydropower or wind or solar going to be lower in either case it's still significantly Lower Michigan than guests but it does vary a lot I gather that one of the things you've noted as you've been doing strive across North Dakota is signs four electric vehicles that say powered by coal explain this yes the Lignite Energy Council which is the Advocacy Group for North Dakota Cole has embraced electric vehicles as a way to create a market for itself in the future the writing is on
