I had worked two weeks in a sandwich shop when I was in college. And I quit because my manager was a jerk. So the only lesson I had in food service was that if you're a jerk to your employees, they will quit. So our objective is to make people feel awesome, and that's what our playbook says on the first page is to make people feel awesome. South block founder, Amir, Mustafa, the smoothies and press juices are popular, but so are the acai bowls. I had a surfer dude from San Diego come in my shop, and he said he wanted to make me something. And I let him make me an acai bowl. And I'd never heard of it before. Western Countries Have Implemented All Round China Containment

"So what is causing Xi Jinping to step up his rhetoric with regard to the United States? Why is he saying that we are supposedly implementing all round containment encirclement and suppression? Let's look at some of the things that the United States has done in recent weeks to see if Xi Jinping's charge or assertion is true. First, the United States announced just a few weeks ago that we are going to be sending between 102 hundred more troops to Taiwan to help train the Taiwanese military there. This is stepping it up from 30 American troops. That's right, 30, not 30,000, not 3000, not 300, just 30, that were stationed in Taiwan. And so we're going to be sending, again, between 102 hundred more. Additionally, the Philippines president fernand Ferdinand, excuse me, Marcos junior has announced that he is going to be giving the United States more access to military bases in the Philippines. And we are allowing Taiwan's president to visit the United States later this year. She is going to meet with House speaker Kevin McCarthy and, of course, the former House speaker Nancy Pelosi visited Taiwan last year. Do

"The European map has changed since the Congress of Vienna. Again, historians debate what to make of the concert of Europe at this point. The continent has seen a few wars now as we know, but it's still avoided falling into another large scale total war, like the Napoleonic Wars. Well, you can decide what you think of the concert as we assess the changes to Europe's map and its shifts in power. Starting on the Italian Peninsula, we now have a united Italy. I noted earlier that the kingdom of Sardinia's name changed to Italy, which happened in 1861, but the newly named and growing kingdom still had more to annex back then. It conquered the last defiant holdout, the Papal States, in 1870, and this year, 1871, Italy makes unification official by naming Rome its capital. That's right. German unification and Italian unification both happen within months of each other, and in a similar fashion. With one powerful state exerting its authority over neighbors of the same ethnicity, and a spoonful of nationalism helps the medicine go down. Unified Italy is strong enough to make the great powers team, but only as a benchwarmer. It's literally referred to as and I quote, the least of the great powers. To continue that analogy, Germany isn't only getting game time. It's a starter. With a population of over 40 million, it's supersedes both Austria and France's power. But while Italy and Germany are growing stronger, the off screen empire is taking a hit. In the wake of its 1866 loss to Prussia, and the growing influence of nationalism, the Austrian crown has to compromise with its Hungarian subjects by giving them a full seat at the table. In 1860 7s Oz gleich, the empire reorganizes as the austro-hungarian empire. Ah, there's the name we heard at the opening of this episode. And please note, you may still hear me say Austrian Empire as a shorthand on occasion. Nationalism continues to hit the Ottoman Empire in the Balkans territory too. Across this southeast European Peninsula, the sultan's subjects of various nationalities are pushing for independence or greater autonomy. Hence the Ottoman Empire's nickname, the sick man of Europe. So Europe seen war and its map has changed since the Congress of Vienna. Yet again, none of these wars resulted in a continent wide war. All of those we've discussed and those we haven't have been short regional conflicts. We can call this a win for the clearly flexible concert of Europe. Nor has everything changed, after all, even with Prussia or now Germany climbing the great power rankings, those listed among the top 5 haven't changed. Sorry, adley, you're just not quite there. Well, I'll let you keep molling on the concert of Europe's success or failure. But now that we have a handle on Europe's altered map and balance of power, let's return to the man who, more than any other individual, has been pulling the continent's strings and will continue to do so for another two decades. Otto von Bismarck. The iron Chancellor knows that humiliated, defeated, territory losing France is out for German blood. But that's fine. See, Otto is a master, if not the master of what is called real politique, which is a philosophy that holds raw power and real world capabilities, not ideology, philosophy, ethics, or other abstracts, are what matter most in politics and foreign affairs. Hence, for auto, France's enmity is only a problem if its new third Republican government is strong enough to do something about it. And it isn't. As long as he can keep France isolated, that is. So that's just what he sets out to do. The iron Chancellor is now a man of peace. Germany is satiated as auto tells the British ambassador in 1871. No great power need worry that powerful Germany will continue conquering. He has no interest in bringing Europe's remaining Germanic peoples under the German tricolor. The Austrians are better off in their empire. This is a unified Klein Dutch, not gross Dutch. Huh. Well, that alone calms the concerns of European powers not called France, but still. What if France makes allies? The iron Chancellor can't have that, so he proceeds to form an alliance system that leaves France friendless. Leaning into their shared vision of conservative monarchy, auto convinces the austro-hungarian emperor and Russian Tsar to align with the German Kaiser in 1873. This is known as the league of the three emperors. But it doesn't hold more than a few years. Not with the Ottoman Empire continuing to fall apart in the Balkans. Bulgarians Romanians and Serbs are rebelling and Russia just can't help seeing another opportunity to indulge its pan Slavic vision. Meanwhile, Austria, unable to exert power over Central Europe's Germanic peoples now that imperial Germany exists is even more interested in growing within the Balkans as the Ottomans hold their ebbs. The Russo Turkish war of 1877 to 78 ends of the league. That war also brings some big changes that factor into our story. For instance, we have newly independent Balkan nations, including the kingdom of Serbia. And though the Ottomans still maintain de facto rule, Austria takes over administrating the provinces of, you guessed it, Bosnia and Herzegovina picking up the pieces the next year in 1879, the iron Chancellor aligns Germany with just the austro-hungarian empire and the dual alliance. This is significant. As a full on military alliance, they will both go to war should their upset eastern neighbor Russia attack one of them, and will likewise stay neutral if another great power. Like vengeance seeking France attacks. In other words, the flexibility of a non aligned Europe just diminished. It diminishes a touch more in 1882 as the two German rulers add unified Italy to make this the triple alliance. But by this point, Otto von Bismarck can't confine his concerns entirely to Europe. The second industrial revolution is fueling a global economic revolution that's both facilitating and encouraging the industrial powers of the world, mostly European powers plus the United States and Japan to expand their imperial holdings. This late 19th century round of global empire building is often known as new imperialism, and in this context, European powers are particularly interested in the raw materials of Africa. Now the Chancellor himself isn't a fan of empire building outside of Europe, but increasingly it seems peace in Europe means looking beyond the continent. Besides, other Germans want their hike to get in on the action. So the aging balding iron Chancellor invites first and second rate empires alike to send representatives to Berlin with hopes that they can peacefully hash out their economic and imperial interests in a particularly disputed area. West Africa and the Congo. It's November 15th, 1884.

Additionally, count Franz von Hara volunteers to ride on the footboard of the royal couple's car to bat off any potential bombs. With this plan in place, he returned to the motorcade. It's now approaching 11 a.m.. The motorcade is zipping down the bridge intersecting the key. We pass the Kaiser bridge and are soon approaching the Latin bridge. But wait. Why are they slowing and turning on Franz Joseph street? This is the original route. The first car's driver clearly didn't understand the change in plans. And the others are following. Again, riding with friends and Sophie, the governor general yells at the chauffeur. Turn back. Watching from the street, gavrilo princip can hardly believe it. After his bomb lobbying co-conspirator failed, and his several other co-conspirators failed to act at all. Gavrilo had lost hope. He came to Franz Joseph street with little hope that Franz Ferdinand would actually stick to his itinerary and further, knowing that gained a clear shot would be next to impossible. Yet not only is the archduke here. His driver just stopped in the middle of this narrow road and is attempting to turn around. Gavrilo doesn't hesitate. Stepping forward from his spot by schiller's delicatessen. The diminutive Bosnian Serb approaches the archduke's convertible. Pulls his browning semi-automatic pistol. And fires twice at almost blank range. Franz grabs at his neck. He felt something, but gives it no thought as Sophie crumples across his knees and red blood stain expands across the middle of her white dress. He pleads with his now unconscious wife. "Week Politics front and center in the Philippines And for more let's go to Bloomberg daybreak Asia host Brian Curtis and Doug Krishna John we thought we'd take a look at the Philippines elections coming up in the next week Former Philippine senator Ferdinand bongbong Marcos junior has been holding onto a lead in the presidential poll The latest polls show that his closest rival vice president Lenny robredo is a distant second Now Marcos junior is favored by 56% of respondents in a poll robredo has 23% support and boxer turned politician Mani Pacquiao is in third place with 7% So the big question is how did the late dictator's son go from exile to election favorite We're joined by Andrea kalonzo who covers Philippine politics in Manila at Bloomberg Andrea let's just pose that question How did bong bong get to this point It's not really an instant rise to power This has been happening ever since their return to the Philippines after exile in the 1990s So they have slowly forged alliances with political plans like themselves And then right now bong bong has really leaned on depicting a positive image of his father and the dictatorship So he has called the golden age That's despite the recorded human rights violations and instances of corruption during the military of his father So even on social media you can see his supporters echoing this line that the dictatorship was the golden age in the Philippines despite economic doubt there at that time So bong bong has really presented that Sold that to the public And then the public has really supported him based on the surveys So he has also ran on a platform of unity So that sounds really simple but that has resonated with a larger public based on the surveys And also he has also promised to steer the country towards pandemic recovery build infrastructure like his father focus on agriculture like his father So it's really all about his father's legacy at this point So this election comes at a time obviously when the Philippines is still dealing with the ramifications of rising inflation globally and also legacy issues around COVID I'm curious as to how this is playing out around the election These issues Analysts are seeing that any of the candidates whether it's bong bong it's let your brother even Pacquiao they will continue the policies that were done by the Duterte administration So of course taxes is such a sensitive issue during elections even not here in the Philips but around the world So they have largely promised Bond bond for example has promised to help small business tests through tax relief that even if there's a problem of ballooning government debt So it's quite a tricky tricky situation How do you move voters in an environment for their high inflation they're still high unemployment high poverty without training them off by saying you will raise that success that will ultimately impact them So bong bong has said in a recent interview that he's not in favor of taxes that will have a direct impact on consumers So we don't know what exactly that means but that's what he has said And then he has also promised to create jobs through tourism again and then prioritize healthcare and then again infrastructure push that will create jobs So that's mainly his economic agenda Yeah Andrea in the early days of president Duterte's time in office he cozied up with China and things of sour a little bit How big of an issue has China been the sea dispute with China been for the candidates So here in the Philippines foreign policy isn't really essential issue during elections but mumbo markers has conveyed so far that he is going to continue that friendly stance with China that they have started Overall Bomba Marcos is seen here and by analysts from outside here as being pro China and he will continue this for China stands.

Author William Federer Describes 'The Treacherous World of the 16th Century'

"William Federer has written a book called the treacherous world of the 16th century and how the pilgrims escaped it which its effectively the prequel to America's freedom, William Federer, welcome to the program. Great to be with you. Hey, I mean, the treacherous world of the 16th century and how the pilgrims escaped it. Most of us know so little about the 16th century. We don't think of it as treacherous or non treacherous. What are we talking about here? What is that what is it that got you to write this book? You've written so many books on history. It's a joy to talk to you on any historical subject. But I love it when you come out with a book like this, because you really have done your homework and we get to benefit. What is it that why do you call it the prequel to America's freedom? What did they leave? Well, Europe was ruled by kings and it was being invaded by the sultan of Turkey. The Ottoman sultan Suleiman the Magnificent he was surrounding Vienna. So backdrop, the Muslims conquered all of North Africa, which used to be Christian. There were 250 Catholic diocese along North Africa. Muslims invaded Spain and held it for 700 years and they were just driven out in 1492. So just a couple of years earlier, the Muslims had controlled Egypt for 600 years. It had been founded by the Christian face Mark that wrote the gospel of Matthew Mark Luke and John. And then Siri was completely Christian for 6 centuries of angiotensin by the apostle Paul until Khalid Omar conquers it. And the Turks convert to Islam and they invaded to what is today Turkey and all 7 churches mentioned in the book of revelation are wiped out and then they finally cross the Bosporus and conquer Constantinople in 1453 and then finally they're invading Europe and surrounding Vienna Austria the year 1529. So here we have an Islamic invasion into Europe and just a couple of years earlier the reformation started 1517 with Martin Luther. And so Europe has an inside outside chaos going on and the Holy Roman Emperor is the king of Spain. Charles V now the title Holy Roman Emperor means he's sort of responsible for defending Christendom. And so here he is wanting to defend against the Islamic invasion. At the same time, he is inherited all the new world, right? Columbus discovered it for Ferdinand Isabella. And so he's taking the gold from the new world to fit out his navy to keep the Muslims from taking over the Mediterranean

An amicus serbian nationalist which through various ententes various arrangements of the earliest twentieth century diplomacy triggered will will won a war in which a whole generation was lost the fruit of europe america only involved in the last few moments of that war it was the european nations that lost the cream of the young men in the trenches of fair done in those no-man's-land filled with bob wire and machine gun nests with more than six million killed but it was the war of mechanized proportions in which predominantly the military's paid the brunt. It was the young men of the armies of each side. That were mowed down just a few years later. The great war the first world war was out don in a conflict that spans the globe. In which sixty million people killed and not just sold is in fact in most cities of that war it was the civilians that bore the brunt. Then came the cold war stasis if you will yes hot was. In the periphery and south asia in the middle east and africa but between the two polish sides between america and the soviet union between nato and the war so packed the birds never flew this strategic bombers never dropped their bombs on washington or moscow on london on paris.

The Fall of France in 1940

"Doing the right thing goes against common sense. It might involve personal sacrifice or missing out on an opportunity to earn a living. It might even put us endanger. The right thing is rarely the safest path forward but it often represents the best odds in september of nineteen fourteen. The people of france found themselves in a desperate position. The soldiers and war machines of germany were marching closer and closer to paris. It wasn't as if they hadn't tried to stop them. No that's what they've been doing for weeks. The war had sprung like a leak from a seemingly tiny hole with the assassination of austrian archduke. France ferdinand that was june twenty eighth of nineteen fourteen by august. First germany had declared war on russia two days later they set their sights on france as well. They had lost territory to france in the aftermath of the franco prussian. War of eighteen. Seventy one and they wanted it back in late august. On their way to francis northern border germany pushed through belgium. The small nation was quickly captured by august twentieth. It was in full occupation. All of a sudden the enemy had possession of territory right on the border and they showed no signs of stopping germany's forces were like a tidal wave of bullets and blood and it seemed very likely that france would indeed be invaded but again they tried to stop it. British soldiers came to help but the battle of months did not go as well as they had hoped for sending france and her allies into a quick retreat that was august twenty third. You have to stop and think about what it must have felt like. For the people of france and specifically those in the capital city of paris a foreign power had declared war on them and was now barreling toward them like a juggernaut in fact nothing had stopped germany at all and it would have been easy to feel hopeless in the face of that approaching danger in fact britain's foreign secretary at the time sir. Edward grey expressed that hopelessness out loud to a friend when he said the lamps are going out all over europe we shall not see them lit again in our

"And i use the analysis from the pcs get nine data not again in terms of survival but in terms of cardiovascular events that lower is better if done safely so yes i would drive this patient even further doctor ferdinand. Thank you so much for being here with us today. Where near the end of the episode. And i wanted to give a shoutout to my co fellow dr edward duran who is our cardiac prevention fellow at the university of minnesota who provided me with a lipid rich review of studies for this episode for more lipid analogy checkout episode. Forty two with doctors. Anne marie navarre and mishaan shaw where they discuss lipid metabolism therapeutic targets and approach to predicted risk and common management scenarios as we close the episode. Doctor ferdinand. can you tell us what makes your heart flutter about cardiovascular prevention. I am very pleased to see cardiologists and training. Who clearly want to have the ability to do the advanced imaging place devices intervene for acute coronary syndromes etc but who are also sensitive to the need to reduce the overall risk that the patient presents with perhaps some of the older cardiologists miss that because they became so focused on the copays. Lesion are placing the device because of an arrhythmia that we didn't put enough emphasis on prevention. But i'm hearing from the younger cardiologists that yes they wanna they wanna have access to the advance interventions devices therapeutic agents but they recognize the importance of treating the whole patient. The other thing that makes my heart really feel fine. Is that being a child of the lower ninth ward and experiencing how you environment can affect your survival when you look at the people on the roof and katrina. My family was able to get out for katrina. But i didn't get out for another hurricane when i was a kid called betsy. My paternal grandfather drought and we were on the roof to three days. No food no water. Nobody to rescue us. So i've actually been one of those people who have seen that environment and survival itself can create certain proportions of our population very harshly and my heart flutters. I'm warned that young cardiologists in training at some of the best institutions a willing to at least entertain the idea that we only need to recognize these disparities but we need to eliminate them. And for that. I thank you doctor. Ferdinand really cannot thank you enough for your time here today and the teaching. I know i've taken so much away from this. And again i mentioned this before but really looking forward to going back and listening again and really absorbing all the pearls that you've given us today two things that i want mentioned specifically i your focus on the individual patient resonates deeply and and is extremely important as you say not just to fix the lesion be focused on these interventions but to really try to broadly help the individual patient in reach kind of across the board of cardiovascular. Prevention really. Can't thank you enough for your time. Here doctor ferdinand. It's my pleasure for our audience. This concludes our second episode in. Our three part series on ldl cholesterol. Please join us for our third episode with dr alison bailey. Coming up next week..

"Welcome. Thank you that fernande. Thank you so much for taking the time to be here with us to nyein into share your knowledge. We'd like to start with a question. We ask everyone here. That's how did you become interested in cardiovascular prevention well. My pathway being cardiologists is a little bit more direct than you would think as a child. I didn't have any great love of medicine per se. I didn't have a stethoscope and desire to be cardiologists. I grew up in the lower ninth ward. It's the neighborhood at the back part of new orleans that you could come for convention twenty times and never visit and this is the same area that was unle destroyed by hurricane katrina when i grew up as a kid. The teachers in my family in the neighborhood put a lot into me and when i finally got into formal education went away to college and decided i wanted to go to med. School did some basic research and found that what was killing the people in my community. More than anything else was cardiovascular. Disease are disease strokes heart failure chronic kidney disease so i wanted to have a tool by which could make a difference now in twenty twenty one. That sounds a little far fetched as a reason to be cardiologists but that is exactly what i decided to thank you for sharing that with us. Doctor ferdinand it's wonderful to hear what a genuine drive in passion. You have for your patients in your community. Let's get started in our preventative cardiology clinic. With the first case of the day our first patients are eddie and izzo to my twenty year old male twin brothers who are seen us in clinic for newly diagnosed familial hypercholesterolemia on genetic testing is tested negative for the gene mutation. However eddie was positive. Eddie's cholesterol was two hundred on his latest labs is was one twenty. Your mother also has resigned his familial hypercholesterolemia in had an m. i in her forties. They want to know more about familial hypercholesterolemia and how lowering her. Llc will factor into their future risk of cardiovascular benefits. What would you tell them while i would tell them that. When you go to most practicing clinicians they may not even be aware of the condition. And it's mainly driven by genetics. One of the most common is a defect in the receptor that it's not your fault but we now have medications. That may actually help. You live longer and live better. Your brother is clearly one who did not have the same degree of risk as you did with not really sure that we can reverse to the extent that you have this genetic defect your wrist equal got if your brother but with intensive ldl reduction. It's clear that we can reduce the chances of having a heart attack stoke in perhaps dying from cardiovascular disease prematurely when a great approach and i think that really strikes with needs just how you started that conversation..

"Well they go sailing together for goodness sake. They have so the summer picnics together. Having said which. I do rather get the impression that relations are a bit scratchy. Not so much with Beloved king george v at the moment but his father king edward. The seventh seemed to rub people the wrong way. Both kinds of ville helm and nicholas in moscow felt patronised by him and he was after all most of the time they were grinding up together he was only a prince and they were already rulers but having said that he always rather talk down to them he was the uncle. They would the new rising younger generation. So while on the one hand i would have thought. It's a complete no brainer. That they should sit down and actually saw things out on the other. Hand families sometimes have the worst sorta squabbles. And i have a slightly nasty feeling that there isn't an awful lot of love lost between them tomorrow. We are coming to the end of our discussion. And i don't want to conclude matters on an unnecessarily alarmist note for what may turn out in the grand scheme of things to be something of a storm in a teacup generally no really big deal. Certainly not the sort of thing they would be making radio programs about one hundred and seven years from now so what at this point would need to happen for such tensions as we are hearing about to abate. Who would need to do what to calm. Everybody's nerves a little at this point. I think the most important question here. Iran at the moment is who decides finally what to do and when. I'm reading the newspaper notes from all over europe so people somehow on the streets here fear that it's not the emperor's anymore because if these old kaisa would decide he would certainly come down everything as he did already for so long but people fear that maybe the mood down the streets which are a lots of people i mean. Lots of people didn't like fred in either but a lot of people don't like serbia. They want calm down. So don't want to have every year narrating stories about serbia that all these crisis will lead to more. And i don't see anybody exact pretty apparatchik comical them at the moment over notwithstanding quainton and just finally. This'll be over by christmas. I'll help will. We've haven't had a serious war. In europe very localized affairs for decades and it would be unconscionable actually i a blunder into some big a wall but what worries me sitting here in london. Actually that people here are not working out for the dangers. They don't really.

"You're listening to foreign desk. I'm joined now by the journalist. Quentin peel and the analyst. Tamara sheer now as we try to figure out quinton and tomorrow what. The significance of this assassination might end up being. I'm putting mind inevitably of a couple of quotes attributed to otto von bismarck the late iron chancellor who left us a few years ago now he wants said as you will doubtless remember that if there ever is another war in europe it will come out of some damned silly thing in the balkans but he also said of course that the balkans was not worth the healthy bones of a single pomeranian grenadier. So i guess what we're trying to figure out today is whether or not either or both of those suggestions of bismarck's accurate tomorrow. It feels sensible to start with you. In vienna we have of course seen archduke ferdinand's funeral in vienna and he has now been taken for burial at the chateau in arch dutton. What do you know about the mood among the australian high command. How angry of about the loss of the sun will strictly speaking nephew and heir. When i think it depends on if you're reading newspapers this days. If you believe in what newspaper says all what usually people from the nsa never ever believe in your sabres but believe people talk about in coffee houses. Though if i think of people are reading at the moment and then commanded a coffee houses and industries react. Gonna but what i have to say is that it's the beginning of july. He is pretty hard and usually on. There is nothing going on because people have flashed for their so-called some finishes. They left for some really nice landscaped. Cities koetter dolo stra. But this time it's totally different. So lots of people had returned that not many of them such as them over busy and taking part in how to react to all of these like some high on me members and some bureaucrats but the rest is still in the countryside which lots of people here staying that lee swamp become a huge crisis or something like that. If i look back a less happy love here so every year was something going on last year. Balkan war the before. When i ball war people out somehow annoyed saturday. Think okay. this is fake. Being the arab detroit was murdered or kill. Maybe something will come out of that but properly would be best to spend holidays. I amend decide corden. Viz a certain amount of that reassurance echoed here in the uk by at least some of the british newspapers. The manchester guardian has said this week. And i quote. It is not to be supposed that the death of the duke francis ferdinand. We'll have any immediate or salient effect on the politics of europe. So that's good to know but another observation. The guardian has made those. Make me wonder though quinton about the frailties of humankind at the moment like this the manchester guardian again notes. The habsburgs have produced many lunatics and one great statesman. And they're they're talking about charles. V holy roman emperor and that was four hundred years ago or something. Is there a possibility that the habsburgs possibly at this point somewhat decadent and dare i say inbred a just not up to managing a crisis of this magnitude. What worries me is that. We're seeing two great empires frontier between them. The habsburg empire and the ottoman empire both of them frail weak ruled by old man. And there's a source of mood of really decay about the whole thing. And i think there's a real danger that both sides that could be much more hotheaded people who will actually find in this some sort of excuse to really push their empire back into an active mood. I mean the has been that. Sorta criticism going on in vienna for some time saying if only the emperor would actually do something. I think people are getting pretty fed up and the idea that an incredibly bloody acts like this could somehow be pasta over. I think maybe a bit exaggeration. I mean can. We just imagine how people would feel in london. If a leading member of the british royal family were assassinated by an irish nationalist. I think the mood would actually be pretty explosive. Well i guess tomorrow if we expand that analogy back to the balkans which is of course where we come into this. Is there a sense that at least some close to the top of the austro-hungarian high command and perhaps even the german high command have been looking for a while. Now for an excuse to take a pop at sir beer in that the assassination of the odds ferdinand may not end up being a reason for an attack on serbia as a justification for something that people wanted to do anyway fast and then who is for land china's in we i would say i mean for all over the years. I observed something like the austrians always criticized and from year to year thinking off speaking. About how long would it be empire lost in this or that way so everyone was already created much into it won't last for long because it can work with all these national township But i think it's something where we have to think that also very many people living in ostra hangers not only in vienna regardless if they supported monarchy or support how work at the moment they somehow think of all this old man in riano like improprieties shows it. Probably he will soul fit again like calming gel and there will nothing come out of it but on the other hand people also speaking of that there is some kind of army members who want to make career. There was no war for long time always costing us troubles. They are something. Like what if serbia wants to rescue. If the remaining serbs living in austria hungary and especially bosnia-herzegovina. Something like finalizing acerbity that he thought she meant to like a unification like an intimate already took place and so maybe there some high ranking on me members. Say something like. Let's use this opportunity to get rid of the serbs once and for all tomorrow just to follow that up. Serbia did of course expand considerably during those two balkan wars of recent memory. But it's still not that big a deal. Is it still four and a half million people. It's a fairly backward economically and technologically sold of play. Certainly compared to places like australia and germany does anybody perceive it as actually a threat or actually do they possibly perceive it as quite the opposite an easy win which demonstrates the potent in the might and the authority of the empire. Serbia that i would say especially on members may be an internal circles but not officially would say like should we judge serbia's being exhausted from the previous wars. Or is it narrow experienced moderated enough to somehow finished at row checked off unification's that all serbs live in one serbian nation. Steak or what is also very intriguing. So we do not austro-hungarian army high command does not know how.

"If the assassination of archduke franz ferdinand and sophie is linked not just to some fringe onslow nationalist grid law. Some fringe serbian nationalist group that raw that to the powers. That be in serbia. Then this is obviously getting too much more ramifications. Austria hungary will view this as an unfriendly act by another state which is to say. The kingdom of serbia there has been narrower repercussions already of the more spontaneous sort. Sarajevo is of course an ethnically and religiously. Well it depends how you want to look at it either divided city or extremely cosmopolitan one but there has been anti serb rioting reported interesting in some respects very problematic if you're own ethnic in bosnia-herzegovina or indeed in croatia. Over the past week sanrio voters. I've seen the worst of the rioting where the hotel europa which is the biggest and grandest hotel in. The city was systematically ransacked by group of around two hundred people now. The reason they did that is hotel is owned by. Businessman have died and these disturbances as well as businesses being talked by the riots. As but the interesting thing is that these riots do not seem to have been particularly spontaneous. They responding to a call by the austro-hungarian authorities to cleanse the city of the shame if the assassination so in effect it's rentamobs who are responsible for this and it's difficult to get a sense of to what degree this is. Due to ethnic tensions between bosniaks croats and ethnic serbs. And what degree of the hungarians. Who are very much afraid of the power of pan-slav sentiment because as you say arabia a crossroads. Thanks very much. Like bay ridge in that respect. The what almost all of the people have in common in sarajevo is that they are slobs on onslow movement has been growing growing empower growing and influence. And that's been causing great concern among the austro-hungarians. Is it possible. Then that the perpetrators of this assassination may not have thought the repercussions of it all the way through. I mean it's fairly clear what they were trying to accomplish it. He's an attempt to slough off habsburg rule and promote an amount of slavic unity. But is it possible that they may end up conjuring the exact opposite. They were certainly aiming to get rid of the austro-hungarian it's not the biggest thing. Now whether the assassination of a senior figure in the habsburg imperial family who was actually in favour the reform of the empire. It was the way to do. It is another question. Altogether franz ferdinand's miss it wasn't just about inspecting the troops. He also was looking forward of you to make it not just the jewel monarchy but some sort of triple on game that he was looking at a way bringing together the habsburg territories in slavic lands and establishing another monarchy within another was something which young bosnian black hand very concerned about from that part. If you have a solution within the austro-hungarian i'm for the slob people. Then you'll onslow movement. Which would have its powerbase in. Belgrade is very much going to lose. Steam just finally guy on the subject of the assassin himself. He fired the fatal shots. His name i believe is goverry low print ship. What do we know about him as you say a young nineteen years old and he's affiliated with the black hand grip with the young bosnia group. He has said that he wants australia. Hungary out of bosnia. He has a pan slavic nationalists and those are his goals. He tried to kill himself immediately. After the assassination as did is compatriot who threw the grenade. The car earlier on both of them. "Sunday june twenty eighth nineteen fourteen archduke. Franz ferdinand presumptive heir to the throne of austria hungary. And nephew of the emperor was assassinated in sarajevo. The capital falls new huts governor alone with his wife. Sophie duchess opponent vote. Those responsible for the motives appear to be a gang of young serbian. Nationalists aggrieved perhaps at the australian empires annexation of bosnia herzegovina in nineteen nine eight. There is even some suggestion. The killers may have been acting with the knowledge. perhaps even the encouragement of the regime in belgrade. This is why the assassination of archduke franz ferdinand vo. Obviously a serious event in itself may be more serious still austria already. Suspicious of serbia's ambitions in the balkans has a natural ally in germany austro-hungarian emperor franz joseph who has warned the habsburg crown for sixty six years is an old man. It is unclear how sound his judgment is or if he is making judgments it may be that. Vindictive mutterings emerging from vienna and berlin A roose an attempt to leverage the ops. Jukes death to intimidate serbia. Certainly no other. European powers have said much beyond offering these standard condolences. Is this going to be a much bigger deal or not or could it possibly become one by accident. They're very distracted by surprise at the suffragettes of the home rule campaign in ireland. Nobody's really paying any attention. And i have just a nasty feeling that we could blunder into something stupid. You're listening to the foreign desk. I'm under mullah will first of all our man in sarajevo guy. Delauney joins me on a surprisingly technologically advanced telephone nineteen fourteen. Hopefully he can hear this guy. Can you hear us okay. Are we coming through. This is going to eight hammy. Yes we can hear you as well guy. Thank you for joining us guy. First of all. What do we understand now about. What actually happened in sarajevo last sunday on the very mixed basic scale on fronts ferdinand and his wife sophie would make shot to death by an assassin in sarajevo as they drove in that mooks kate Along the river in the center of the city now franz-ferdinand ferdinand was that in his role as the inspector general of the imperial army for the austro-hungarian empire and he's had increasing influence and austria hungary in recent years and this visit away was part of increasing profile and there was more than that as well but to get back to the facts of the assassination they actually avoided walnut assassination attempt by a matter of inches. Somebody in the crowd along the key. Sides threw a grenade at that car. It bounced off the folded convertible roof on that. Call back into the crowd and it was on time that exploded causing injuries in the crowd. The royal couple and then educate then went onto that planet destination. Which was the city hall in sarajevo. Where they were meeting the math and other dignitaries that and it was on their return journey that the second assassin approached car with a pistol at the corner of the latin bridge over the river the show from birth to death. They died in the car as they were being taken to hospital. From the very fact that there was as you pointed out in attempt on the objects life early in the day as well we can infer that this is not one random malcontents acting entirely under their own cognizance. They reside plot there is a conspiracy afoot. Isn't there what do we know about the perpetrators. Well we knew so phone that those seem to be members of a hand slava group known as young bosnia which is affiliated with a serbian secret society called black hand now both of these groups are committed to the idea of bringing all the south slavs people together in one state. Serbia has its independence. it also now has control of macedonia and kosovo but the other south slavs people in croatia and bosnia-herzegovina still under the control of the habsburg empire and it does seem that this jewel assassination has been motivated by the desire to somehow remove these lands from australia. hungarian control. I'm putting me on directly under serb control. To bring all these south slavs lands unified together in one country much support in the balkans especially in serbia. Full that kind of sentiment do the black hand and the perpetrators of this assassination are they operating from a position of mainstream support or is this a fairly eccentric niche preoccupation wilford secret organization. It's known that an awful lot of serbian army officers very senior serbian army and they're either members or otherwise involved with black hand. Juan Sebastián Elcano Was Actually the First Person to Circumnavigate the Earth

"Ferdinand magellan is often credited with being the first person to circumnavigate the earth. However this isn't true. I don't mean this in the same way that columbus wasn't the first european in the americas because the vikings made it to newfoundland. I i mean magellan never circumnavigated the earth at all period. The magellan voyage did not set out travel around the world. The purpose of the mission was to find a western route to the spice islands. Or what we now call indonesia. They set out in fifteen nineteen only twenty seven years after columbus first landed in the bahamas in fourteen. Ninety two the magellan voyage really just set out to achieve with the columbus expedition tried to to reach asia by sailing west. The difference was that this time they knew there was a gigantic landmass in between europe and asia. And this time they were gonna go around it. Magellan was portuguese so many people assume that his expedition was sponsored by portugal. But that wasn't the case. It was actually a spanish expedition sponsored by king charles. The first the spanish wanted the western route because portugal had a monopoly on the eastern route around africa in through the indian ocean. The expedition consisted of five ships with supplies. Last two full years the total crew consisted of two hundred and seventy minute at the start mostly spanish but with crew from many different countries. The expedition took a major toll. The first ship was lost in fifteen twenty in a storm in argentina. The second ship was abandoned in what is now called the straits of magellan. Several months later the third ship was scuttled in the philippines and may fifteen twenty one because of lack of crew and the fourth was lost in indonesia in december on april twenty seven. Fifteen twenty one. Magellan himself was killed in the philippines by the natives of the island where they landed. He was surrounded and killed with spears. This left the expedition. In a quandary. Its leader was dead. Over half the crew were dead and they were on the other side of the world. They sailed around without any purpose for about six months. And eventually the crew selected one wants fashion elcano a spaniard to be the captain of the last remaining in smaller ships of the fleet. The Greatest Barn Finds of All Time

"Barn fines. The long lost cars with a built in mystery, we're addicted to these lost and found time capsules partly because of the story they tell about the past but also of how they feel in the president like something that time traveled into. Now with decades old potential waiting to be tapped and to be clear, these cars don't need to be found in a barn. Okay. Today are barn finds come from parking garages and Australian chicken coop and even buried underground some because. What's the rarest car ever found? What's the most valuable and how did these automotive treasures get lost in the first place? A normal person loses their car keys once in a while. But who is the person that can lose an entire car? especially one like a prototype shelby Mustang or a LAMBORGHINI MIRA s here's a hint. They're usually very rich people. We'll also get into Wi Carr fans continue to love these barn fines. Maybe an age where literally all the information in the world sits in our pocket. The idea of hidden treasure is more precious than ever before and with so many cars feeling blander and more mass produced than ever unique cars feel rare than ever to a barn find always has its own one of a kind story behind it. So I think that's a really good point I would say that like barn finds potentially like. Don't exist in the way that they used to because to me a barn find. Also. Suggest some sort of like. Deal or like you. You know what? I. Mean Like it's like, Oh, I found this car. Then I bought it for this much money whereas like now the person. Can just google it like I know I I make a living everyone in this makes a living talking about cars on the Internet, but the Internet is ruined cars everything is valuable now. Yeah. It tennis sucks I. Think it hasn't ruined the joy of driving or getting to experience like new things in that way, but I see what you're saying whereas. A lot of things are described value immediately, which I I really hate God on bring a trailer this week there is some Honda accord from the mid seventies that sold for like twenty one thousand dollars and I was like that car it's not worth that amount of money just because it's A condition four thousand dollars to a huge Honda accord. But because like there's such a hype around like Oh man this is like in this such and such condition with this miles and it's There's only so many of them like that's when money kind of ruins it in that culture of like wanting to have. A car that valuable I don't know the same thing happened though like fifteen years ago with barn find particularly mopus because those cars Warner's common back in the day. So when people found like Barracuda or Challenger sitting somewhere in a barn there like a meal like discards worth a million dollars no rusty piece of. and. It's only worth a million dollars if it was original parts matching everything. But because you found some shell behind your uncle's place, it doesn't mean Jack it's. Clearly. Look I'm a I'm a bitter Mo- par, Guy. It's been the the the. Been in completely over inflated, which is why I had to buy an imperial instead of like a real muscle car. Of. This attitude that everything has to be some crazy valuable car for to be cool which is not true. Your car is really cool knowing don't feel bad about but Joe, I know I don't know any sometimes Nolan's car. No one's cars parked at my house sometimes I go and sit in it I I. I'm glad. It's fun. It's like I said Mitt I think like when the Sun's going down. Unlike man, this thing is going to be cool when it runs, we'll be it's it's I ordered a bunch of brake parts which have arrived James outs There might be some more boxes on the way, but I'm GONNA refresh the brake system, and after that, the big hurdle becomes getting the car to run and that's when I can find out what else needs to be fixed. So. is it are you converting from drum brakes disc? No, it's. It's got drum brakes around. So I ordered a bunch of drum brake. Specific stuff like. Brake shoes and wheel cylinders. Brake lines return springs all this stuff I also live on the top of a gigantic hill. It's to be a real trial by fire situation. We're going to go around your little neighborhood there first before we do anything drastic. This is like a seventeen thousand pound rockets. Zooming down. Well, we know that we know the break works. So let's get right into. Finally. With what might be the OG OF BARN FINES? All right. This car probably has the record for the longest time hidden away it spent. Okay. You guys ready for this. One hundred and twelve years sitting in a shed in Austria before being uncovered in two thousand fourteen. Wow. The car I'm talking about is the Porsche p one also known as the Edgar Lunar Electric Vehicle, and even calling a car might be a bit of a stretch, Armstrong whatever you WanNa call though what's not up for debate is that the P. One is the world's first ever Porsche designed by then twenty three year old Ferdinand Porsche Ferdinand even employees the nineteenth century version of a watermark actually hand carving P. "What was so big about movable type. Well movable type meant that each letter had its own little block and they could be arranged in any format that was needed to make any text. Prior to that, the entire page of text had to be carved in one single block of wood like an enormous stamp. Now, consider the amount of time it would take to carve one such block then multiply that by the number of pages in even the shortest book. Any printing press was an improvement over hand-lettered manuscripts but the Gutenberg press could print over two hundred pages per minute which gave the world what would be called the Gutenberg forty two line, Bible. Books and the ideas that they contained were no longer the exclusive purview of the very wealthy. Greater access to ideas and information was a causative force behind such things as the renaissance, the Protestant reformation and the industrial revolution. But Gutenberg did not create the first movable type press. A printing press with movable metal type was developed in Korea during the Goria Dynasty, which ran from eight nineteen to thirteen ninety, two in a desperate attempt to preserve religious texts in the face of a Mongol invasion. The effort was successful but only just barely. A single copy of a single volume of one book remains. It's called the G, which is the abbreviated title of a Korean Buddhist and policy whose title can be translated as in theology of great Buddhist priests Zen teachings. GDP is easier to say. The key is a collection of experts from the teachings of the most revered Buddhist monks throughout successive generations collated by a monk named Kyogon. It was published in two volumes in thirteen, seventy two though the first volume has been lost completely. Further weakening the Gutenberg was first position. The Korean press wasn't even the first press that had movable type. The earliest known non-metallic movable type press was developed in China in the tenth. Century. That press used clay blocks which would prove to be too fragile. Though, it was thought to have directly influenced the Korean. design. There's also evidence that Gutenberg's press may not be an example of simultaneous invention. A record in the Swiss Museum of paper indicates a papal delegation to `gorio brought printing technology back to Europe. Korea's claim to origination carries some serious bone fee days in the form of two thousand one edition to the memory of the world program by UNESCO the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization. Three years later, the Jiechi memory of the world prize was created, which quote recognizes instiutions that have contributed to the preservation and accessibility of documentary heritage to safeguard against collective amnesia neglect the ravages of time and climate conditions and willful and deliberate destruction. If the listener would like to see the Jixian person they might want to bone up on their French. Rather than reposing rightfully in Korea, the G. has been kept in La Bibliotheque Nationale France in Paris. It was acquired under let's call them unclear circumstances by the first French Console to Korea and past Tula Bibliotheque upon his death. The consensus in Korea is unsurprisingly that they would like it to be returned that cultural artifacts belong in their country of origin. La Bibliotheque adamantly refuses arguing that the Jiechi is out of humanity's common heritage and therefore doesn't belong to anyone. Which raises the question at least in this reporters mind. If it belongs to everyone and therefore no one. What would it matter if they gave it back? On a brighter note, a wood carving print of the cheeky is currently kept in the National Library of Korea. Sometimes a person we remember as the first to do something wasn't preempted by someone else. They merely failed to complete the thing they're credited with. Such as the case with Ferdinand Magellan the name long attached to the first circumnavigation of the earth.

National League asks FA to help end season "as soon as possible"

"Interesting statement made by the National League today now. This is the fifth tier in English. Football this is what they came out and said the FAA have been asked to assist us with making the decision to officially postpone all remaining National League fixtures and to end the season as soon as possible to define all reasonable and practical options that determination of the two thousand nine. Hundred Ninety two thousand twenty season. Huron Ron is with US Gills. Some speculating that this could have ramifications all the way to the top. All the way to the Premier League just explain how yes. I think he would have a domino effect. I'm not sure if you will hit the premier because as you said National League is he's the fifty s then you obviously have leaked to won the championship and the primarily images not get to the primarily Sunni in that pyramid some other leagues will be will be impacted. If you just think about the National League decide that this is an void. Suppose you should. You should have had two teams promoted into the fourth division and wants him to go down because of what happened to to bury. That were expelled. If there's no promotion no relegation from the fifty two the fourth year what do you still promote teams and relegate him and could you do the same with the third division to the four division and what happened to the championship? The second division. So you could see already to domino effect. That could have hot especially the National League. Decide that basically the Sudanese void and nothing happened and you go back next season with the same twenty four teams in the League at the moment in theory though it shouldn't go all the ways the primarily. It shouldn't affect them certainly at the moment. No you're right you should know. Go all the way to the top of the pyramid but even if you just think was going to happen to a fourth and third division and then that could have mrt and maybe even to the championship and then suddenly the whole thing as well is crumbling and also if the National League which is a big league semi pro and some of the professional clubs decided that they vote. The season will also encourage other people. We talked about Rio Ferdinand yesterday. Thinking who thinks a current premier league season should be void as well or the live with a minute. Maybe that's the way to go. Maybe the fourth third second division we say yeah. That's the right thing to do. This season should avoid nothing happens. No relegation promotion. We'd go back again next year with teams and then maybe the Promo liquid also thinking the same way.

The 1992 Little League World Series Scandal

"Event the International Youth Sports while it might Okun Image of fun and innocence throughout its seventy three year history. The tournament has been plagued by scandal and on the afternoon of August. Twenty Ninth Nineteen Ninety. Two as spectators watched the Filipino team celebrating on the field after clobbering their American opponents. They couldn't shake the uneasy feeling that something about the situation didn't feel quite right. Welcome to sports criminals. Apar- cast original. This is the third episode in our March Madness. Special this month. We're counting down the top thirty one sports scandals from nineteen ninety. Two Thousand Twenty. I'm Carter Roy and I'm Tim Johnson in today's episode. We're going back to nineteen ninety two and the Little League World Series Scandal. Zamboanga city located on a small remote island in the Philippines is most famous for its canned sardine industry but in nineteen ninety two. It was the city's Little League Baseball team that caught the world's attention the team from Zamboanga breezed through the World Series Tournament. Demolishing everyone in its path until trouncing a squad from Long Beach California in the championship. Game fifteen to four from a gold medal in boxing thirty years before the boys victory represented the most significant athletic achievement. In the country's history they returned to the Philippines as heroes where President Fidel Ramos through them. A parade in the capital city and awarded them over forty dollars in scholarship money. Nearly everyone in the country celebrated the team's victory everyone except journalist Al Mendoza as a journalist. Mendoza's job was to tell the truth. Which wasn't always easy in a country like the Philippines twenty years before dictator Ferdinand Marcos had banned anything beyond state-sanctioned news and only recently after a regime change had independent news outlets resumed operation. Just a day. After the team's Victory Parade Mendoza published a column in the daily Enquirer with the heading mothers. How old are your children? He not only cast doubt on the ages of the players from Zamboanga City. But whether they were actually from the small town as they claimed to qualify for the Little League world series players must be between ten and twelve years old and the player must live within the geographic boundary of the town or city that his or her team represents for example. Boy From Austin Texas. Can't play on team from Dallas. Ten to twelve is also a tricky age because of the disparity and boys sizes and appearance at that age some of almost reach their adult height will others are still under five feet tall to Mendoza and many others the Filipino players looked too and too poised for boys that age after he published his column. The American League president fact sheet of questions to his counterpart in the Philippines to confirm the players were the correct age and if they were all from Zamboanga City in his response the Filipino. Little League president declared that all the players were of legal age but admitted that several from outside Zamboanga city had been added to the roster because the original players weren't able allowed to travel to the United States. He explained that Zamboanga City is a very rural area and that many of the boys were needed to work on their parents farms. Others had been too afraid to fly. He also maintained that if the substitution hadn't been made the original team from Zamboanga City would have beaten the Americans by twice as much but days later Mendoza and his colleagues revealed that excluding the eight players added to the roster from other cities the six players actually from Zamboanga city. Were all over. Asia anywhere from thirteen to fifteen years old and had assumed the identities of younger boys in town that the team had replaced their original manager with coach from Manila. A coach who couldn't even speak or understand the dialect used in Zamboanga City. Furthermore the parents of the overage athletes had also assumed false identities in an effort to maintain the ruse. Maybe the Little League Baseball could overlook the replacement of a few kids who were too scared to fly but when it came to systematic fraud perpetrated by multiple generations. They had no choice but to strip the Filipino team of its title and awarded to the boys from

VW Beetle Part III: From Hitler to Hippies

"Back to the epic conclusion of our three part series on the Volkswagen Beetle. It's been dark road the F. Are you guys a lot of really messed up stuff? But there's a lot of peace in love in the future. Yea here that this episode is about peace and love so I'm looking forward to. We're going to get there. Hey guys welcome to the. Pass Gas podcast. You like passed gas. Please help us grow by giving us a good rating and a nicer view on the podcast platform of your choice to really help us out. I really appreciate it. Thank you all right now for the show. When we last left off the Volkswagen Wolfsburg factory originally meant to Make Carson. People WAS BUILDING WEAPONS OF WAR INSTEAD. Wolfsburg was targeted by the allies and nearly destroyed but the war ended. Hitler was dead. It was time yeah. It was time for the Volkswagen to live up to. Its name is name was the people's car Ooh bye-bye now that the war was over. Germany was faced with the massive task of reconstructing a shattered country including resupplying. The transportation needs for the people after the war. Germany was divided into multiple zones. The British American Soviet and French sectors Wolfsburg was situated within the British sector and the factory was still under the British pocket book in the years after the war it was also under constant threat of being shut down but once the British and American sectors merged it became apparent that British Army Engineer Major Ivan. Hirst would be able to secure the necessary funding to keep the factory afloat. The country would once again be allowed to participate within the global free market in nineteen forty seven. Obviously these policies had a direct impact on the Volkswagen factory British officials representing the VW plant had continued to push further permission to export during all of these changes every single one of their requests export though had been denied but now the Germany was allowed to enter the market the VW plant was finally viewed as a way to ease the British expenses and in March of nineteen forty seven. The factory quotas were raised. The People's car would be allowed to be exported outside of Germany but only to the Netherlands Belgium and France. The first official export of the car occurred in August that same year? A massive total of five cars were exported and the process was a difficult. One selling quote. Hitler'S CARS TO COUNTRY. Hitler try to Concord. Seemed kind of absurd but it wasn't Hitler's car anymore. So anything can happen. I think they should should stop calling Hitler's car if they want to sell it. Probably not the best marketing hooked. This is a great car. This was Hitler's car. It was obvious that British Army Engineer Major Ivan. Hirst couldn't run the plant forever. He was a military man and while he loved his position at the plant he had a larger job that took priority but each time they tried to take her out of the factory chaos ensued. He ran a tight ship soon enough. The search for a replacement began but for the volatile plant to return to German hands. It needed someone who had expertise when it came to running a major factory. Former Opel head Heinrich Nordhoff. Remember him from the last episode mentioned him he had been barred from working in the American business sector since he had been given an award from the Nazis. A FEW YEARS PRIOR ON K. Not a good look opal was controlled by GM. And Mr Nordhoff was forced out of his job. Due to America's quote no nonsense policy on Nazi involvement after the war you know other than hiring Nazi scientists to develop bombs and stuff. Yeah and like the entire space program. Yeah let's not talk about. Yeah that's true Operation Paper Clip. Look it up. When it came to looking for a factory manager Nordhoff. He might sense. He was experienced in managing factories and since the VW plant was under British control. He was actually allowed to work there on January. First of nineteen forty eight Heinrich took up position as managing director of the Volkswagen. Plant by recommendation of major hearst upon his arrival to Wolfsburg Nordhoff noted that the factory still looked exactly like it did during the war. It was basically a pile of ruins that could somehow produce cars so he knew he had a lot of work to do. So we got the work while he was meant to report to hearst with each action the roles were kind of reversed. It was obvious that Nord off was the expert and no one complained. Once you took control. The first thing Nordhoff did was replaced all the English signs back to German ones. Oh that's the bathroom is been peeing in jars from meanwhile nineteen forty. Seven was a terrible year for Ferdinand. Porsche he had been moved from his original prison to the Dank Dungeons in dijon into John. That sounds like your APP album named Dude Dank dungeons dungeons. That's pretty good good anyway remember. He had been arrested by the French. Police For colluding with Hitler Hitler. Yeah that guy so at this prison in the in Dijon. They were not even given beds all around him other men involved in the war. We're being sentenced to death in the Nuremberg trials. So at least Porsche was better off than that. After twenty two months Porsche and his family were released from the French prisons and declared not guilty of their crimes as the French government only tried him regarding the forced labor of French prisoners The Porsche Corporation to this day still denies the use of forced labour in their factory. At the time just it's better just to come clean about it. You know. Yeah Yeah I mean there's no way right. There's no way that they didn't. I don't know the rest of his record was sort of six months after his arrival to the Volkswagen Factory Heinrich Nordhoff was still sleeping on the factory. Floor on a flimsy. Kat issues plagued the factory especially the lack of housing but most importantly there wasn't really a local market for the cars. Germany was still dirt poor. And those who have the money to buy car tended to steer clear of the word. Volkswagen makes sense also. The factory was amazingly inefficient. It took workers in a reported three hundred hours to build a single car so nordhoff had to reshuffle the factory line in order to imitate the successful style of the lines in Detroit. Normally that Nordhoff expertise allowed him to play with the budget. A little bit. Nineteen forty-nine was the first year the factory was given a firm quota of forty thousand cars and nord-ost reshuffling allowed the cars to be produced over two hundred dollars under budget nor off also rebuilt the factory. He figured out that having bombed out walls and ceilings. Kinda hurt company around. Yeah I remember when our office got blown up. That was really tough to come to work every day. Yes like where do I plug my charger in? Yeah there's no wall. Where am I snack? All my snacks. So Heinrich had the place tidied up a little bit. Most importantly he completely changed the entire decision making power structure of the factory. Using a general manager who controlled multiple departments head on and so on while that's super commonplace. Now this was revolutionary at this time in German history but ultimately the company was still controlled by the British government and while they remain about as far out of the picture as they could heinrich still had to answer to them in the end.

The VW Beetle: An Evil Origin Story

"Germany was looking for a true people's car literally translated as Volkswagen in one thousand nine hundred. Thirty one. One writer from DOS volks auto basically summed up the struggle for making people's those car perfectly quotes the van and be too heavy into expensive to produce the Hausa ill-suited in traffic an unstable in purpose but is needed is a car. Awed designed for the street offering maximum comfort but a minimum of luxury Ferdinand. Porsche realized this as well and at the age of fifty five decided to open a business himself an attempt to accomplish such a monumental task. He assembled a team of the best German. Speaking designers engineers an opened his own company in Stuttgart Germany while he didn't have much capital. He was globally known as an automotive genius so he was able to accomplish this with clouds alone own. GotTa have that clout. Yeah cloud is basically my number one currency. Yeah I think I can speak for everyone in this room. We wouldn't be where we are today without without our cloud for your appearance on two broke girls channel wouldn't exist. It does get a little though. 'cause I remember last week went to lunch and I covered you you and I was like hey. Can you hear me like thirteen dollars. Like I haven't paid for a meal since one thousand nine Hundred Ninety six on April Twenty Fifth Nineteen thirty one the company. I entered the official registry as the doctor Professor Porsche Company for the Assembly consultation and design of automobiles wheels and engines. We've wanted to call Dr Pepper but that's hardly taken. Ferdinand Porsche had made a name for himself in racing. The creation of a people's car was always a personal passion of his. It wasn't long until Porsche began drawing up designs for the first Volkswagen in nineteen thirty. He Won. He was commissioned by Private Motorcycle Company and began working on the project twelve motorcycle sales are going down and this company wanted to diversify hi there portfolio a little bit product. Twelve was the first project ever for Porsche. That was neither a small luxury wagon or a small racing car designs immediately we took on the familiar beetle-shaped and it was powered by five cylinder. One thousand. CC radial engine. That may twenty five horsepower. Radial engine like like like an airplane. Like an airplane yeah the first prototypes were road. Tested in nineteen thirty two. Despite the cars functionality the company that hired Porsche Chak cancelled the contract. As motorcycle. Sales had begin to pick up again in the entire endeavor just like they broke up with their long-term. Yeah way friend and Porsche was like finally you know we're going to get to be together and they're like. Oh Yeah Yeah. Yeah it's always been you then and turns out Dave's back. Oh cool no good for you guys so happy for you know all right so that whole thing was okay for Porsche the motorcycle manufacturer. Ns you another company immediately. swooped in to take their place at the time. Germany held the largest motorcycle market in the world but people wanted cars and Msu that they begin flirting with the idea of building true through automobiles it's crazy that Nebraska State University started out as a motorcycle manufacturer in Germany. It's incredible and then we can. It makes much more money in academia. This new project was dubbed project. Thirty two as it began in the year. Nineteen thirty two a pattern was beginning to form though and ns you started to stay purely in the motorcycle market and bailed on the project the factor. Ns you pulled out. Didn't hinder porsches spirits. It's though he seemed like a pretty a Kinda Guy Project thirty two had allowed him to alternate innovate his previous designs. Bring him one step closer to the future Volkswagen and he had been dreaming of and just a year and a half working for himself he already. He had already made more progress on designing his dream. People's car then he had made in the previous ten so overall he was pretty stoked meanwhile on February eleventh nineteen thirty three less than two weeks after coming to office Chancellor Adolf off Hitler did something no other German chancellor had ever done he attended the Berlin auto show. It was no accident that the theme of the show that year was the will to motorization cassation which now that read it aloud. Sounds very forboding and evil. Okay so Hitler had a plan quote. The motor vehicle has become come next to the airplane. One of humanity's most ingenious means of transportation the German nation can be proud and knowing is played a major part in the design and development of of this great instrument he immediately punctuated that remark by saying that Germany had fallen behind in the market. And now of course his time to fix it was actually at this auto show that one. Joseph Dan's appeared with his own prototype. Volkswagen the Standard Superior Ganz is especially unique in the story because his designs over the five years before the show helped influence both Ferdinand Porsche. And many others. With their attempted Volkswagen's Hitler himself expressed serious interest tryst in the prototype vehicle during the shell despite providing revolutionary designs contributed to all future. Volkswagen beetles just Ganz's name is almost completely absent from any history books. Due to his Jewish Heritage Ganz was arrested persecuted and forced to flee the country of Germany while his name was scrubbed from basically all records and was forbidden from being associated with the term Volkswagen altogether so porsche basically stole the design at the following auto show one year later. Hitler announced two major policies that would be enacted immediately. He called for the mass construction of roads and and highways as well as for car to be built that can finally be owned and driven by the common man quote. No country can be strong transportation as week to help push forward his dream of a mobilized Germany he promised tax relief for auto companies more money for racing more resources for motoring events less interference from state governments on the ownership ownership and production of cars. Course this was not just for the People's benefit but for militancy. Yes now this this is what kicked are like the. US's highway system into high gear to they're like. Oh we need to get you know missiles across the country chief we need to an arson. Attack on the Reichstag allowed Hitler to make a sweeping power grab. He officially made himself Germany's fuhrer he. Hurried hurried changes and transportation and pass the rash automotive law in the summer of nineteen thirty three removing German states of any responsibilities concerning the ownership and and production of automobiles and soon after the construction of the first autobahn began. So he's the site. I'm a dictator. Yeah Yeah it's like turns out. Yeah I'm king to again public support. The idea of national progress was tied directly to the innovation in transportation. It's hard to understand. Just how big the Autobahn project was. But the pure scale of road. Construction was unprecedented unprecedented at the time. Four thousand thirty four miles of road was planned for construction over the next seven years but like so many characteristics characteristics of the Nazi party it was the idea that mattered. Most the Nazi spoke with these roads. As M- court monuments in fact one announcement titled Not Roads But Works Works of art read quote. Nothing is to cramp or delay you in your swing from one horizon. To the other the highways will spark like stone an artfully rot. Ring ring the construction of these roads was essential for Nazis to gain the power. They wanted but they needed the public support behind. We'll be right back with more of this story. Okay but I learned from our sponsors. It should be obvious that the roads were really intended for an advantage during wartime but people were too busy Z.. To really think about that for a while Germany was actually looking really nice as long as he didn't look any deeper than the surface level. Surprisingly of all Hitler's rhetoric. The Volkswagen was the one that carmakers feared the most they all loved the idea of mass producing a car that literally everyone will want to buy or even better working with the governments to enforce the necessity to buy them after all who doesn't love being both supply and demand but they wanted the cars they mass-produced to be cheap like a three wheeled covered in motorcycle or something. Truly cheap manufacturers hated the idea of building a car just as good as the upper level cars for the price of an entry level car they wanted to make money and Hitler's Volkswagen plan left no room for people to even need to purchase high end models. Not only did they think selling a good car. So cheap was texting technologically logically impossible. They also feared the long term impact of direct government involvement in the automotive
