Kind of surreal being down here, and it's so quiet and the same goes for restaurants in the neighborhood owner John Koran says. The return of sports has helped. But he's earning only a fraction of what he was before Cove. It hit. It's nowhere nears before. Certainly the Red Sox not doing well, never helped, but no. One in the stadium. People just aren't coming out. Karen suspects the covert restrictions could be to blame is way weird, but at the same time as time goes on, more people are coming out. We have a mouse when we need someone walking in the bathroom on great good food. Good time by the way. Red Sox did manage to win yesterday. I'm glad that we could still be out in Boston near the stadium, at least on opening day, despite a light crowd. One thing remains the same fans flocking to Lansdowne Street with hopes of seeing the Green Monster. There's a gate inside bleacher bar that we can actually see the field. I feel like that's the closest we could get today, and we're thankful to have that opportunity restaurants adjusting to a new set of guidelines. The Mookie Betts decision could haunt the Boston Red Sox for a long time

"It didn't take very long for mookie bats. He didn't even suit up for the regular season game for the dodgers yet. He's got that tonight against the giants, and they signed him to a twelve year extension for three hundred sixty five million dollars, so he's twenty seven years of age. This is a lifetime deal in La. Certainly Senate notice to the rest of the National League. We mean business here. We're going to be competitive for a long time. On the flip side if you're a red sox fan, because it feels like this was the the Red Sox said. Hey, you know what or last year. Hey, we're going to regroup and try to come back with a vengeance here in a couple of years and there was thought that maybe mookie Betts would end up back with the red sox. At some point. He started his career there. beloved there, but the front. Office didn't commit to him financially. And now the deal's going to be a referendum on both of these franchises. We move forward. If vets delivers the dodgers win, they're gonNA look great in the Red Sox are going to be reminded of the one that got away for at least the next decade, but you never know about these big deals I would never want to sign a player for more than five years. I would just be nervous about that. Just playing the odds of you staying healthy you staying competitive of the cost that goes along with that athlete there. But. We see this with a lot of these baseball players. You sign him up if it's Mike Trout and if it's Bryce, Harper if it's Garrett Cole you want to lock them in, and also there's going to be a question. mookie Betts, no longer in that hitter, friendly fenway park fans in both cities are going to keep a close eye on mookie and his performance in La. La should be one of the more intriguing subplots in this unusual season, and if you look at the numbers with Mukhi Bats, you know my feelings about Mookie Betts. He was must see TV when he was playing for the Red Sox and that will be the same implying the dodgers i. just don't know if you'll be the same style of player that he was at fenway. then. He's going to be that at dodger stadium if you start to look at the numbers since twenty sixteen where mookie Betts ranks. And I know that we think my trout, the coronation, your best player in baseball in the future hall of fame, absolutely no problem with that. mookie Betts. Was the east. Coast version of Mike Trout from the standpoint of he could do everything. and. He's getting paid to do everything now a runs. Nobody scored more runs since two thousand sixteen hits third doubles I. Even home runs. He's not a home run hitting guy. He's five nine one eighty and five nine, one eighty. Thank you thank you? Nineteenth in home runs. You look at RBI's. He's up there. He's you know. He's in the top ten in stolen bases batting average. He puts up numbers all around good fielder as well by all accounts, good clubhouse guy, so the dodgers are investing in somebody who will be the face of the franchise for years to

Inside Washington's Name Change

"John How's it? Goin'? It's been a little bit busy. You might be having the busiest off season well, always busy right now to all the deck Prescott stuff, but but you pretty busy. It was on? July six and a couple of things happen. I told my wife said. I'm about to work in eighteen hours a day on July six. NFL. Opposite in what is going on, and it turns out. That was actually probably a pretty good day in hindsight. John covers the Washington DC based NFL TEAM FOR ESPN Since. We are talking about names I. Do feel it's necessary to point out your John Crime I- Amina climbs two different names not. Although I will say had some relatives. Years back did like genealogy, and at one point, it was kind real in Europe, so we could be related I. Just want to put that out there well. I do get mistaken for you. Know I think there's a similarity so. So back to the name at hand. John The Washington football team announced on Monday after much speculation many reports that they will be retiring their nickname and logo after completing review that began on July third. This has been a conversation for a very very long time, but the team's principal owner Daniel. Snyder has been on the record. Saying the team would never in all caps literally change its name, and then here we so before we get to why this happened. And what's GonNa Happen Next? I just want to ask you as a beat reporter. Did you ever think this day would come? Well. Let me let me step back from that pre. George Floyd, no, because in the past. We've had a deal with this topic many times over the years especially in the last seven. I think the rise of social media has kept it alive, but during that time the plan the strategy here for the reds for Washington was to write off the storm. Just weather the storm. Go go to reservations connect with native Americans and do something like that then when you saw the social unrest this year. You started to seep in your head like they're gonNA. Come after them again and I'll tell you when it really really thought they work to be about. Run at this time was. There was a stretch it about a week where George Preston Marshall, who original owner of the of Washington? And he named the team, and he moved the team from Boston, to Washington will statue was outside their old stadium are k. well. They removed the statue, not the team, but a company in DC that owns that land, so you tweet that out and I'd say. Say Ninety percent of the mentions after that on twitter, where about what about the what about the name? What about the name? The next day team says they're going to retire bobby? Mitchell's number only retired one of the number in their franchise history, so they tweet that out and I wrote a story. Put out there. What about the? What about the name? I've. There's just becoming way too much of everything. They did route this. If they put out a statement about George Floyd about black lives matter, it would always come back to their team name. It was to a level that I hadn't seen before. It does seem though at least from the outside that the true catalysts the thing that pushed this over the edge was the teams naming sponsor Fedex and Fedex asiyo. WHO's a minority owner coming out on the record against the name? Yes and I'm going to back up a couple of weeks before that because there some parallel timelines that led to I think this occurrence and one of which was Dan Snyder had reached out I was told by multiple that he had reached out to the League a few weeks before that, and had already started to engage in conversations with the NFL, Roger Goodell about a possible name change along that same time there's the group of eighty seven shareholders and investors were combined six hundred twenty billion dollars in the lead by investor advocacy groups, so they're the ones who targeted Fedex Habsi company Nike Bank of America. It wanders sponsors. If you don't sever your ties here, you know. That's what they want to sever their ties, and so that's what they're pushing. When Fed, ex came out with the statement. That's when when people I've talked to said. That's when they knew it was over. I WANNA to talk about those groups. All of the activists who've been working tirelessly on this for years, but I thought it might be helpful to break down why the name exists in the first place. Where does it come from? The name when it first. Started I guess or was mentioned throughout history was about refer to the color skin and there is. I've got her who worked for the Smithsonian magazine, went back and researched it and found that it was way that native Americans would refer to other to differentiate themselves from. Whites or blacks or whomever else was here, so they referred themselves the redskins than it seemed to segue into a negative connotation, which you know, you'd see posters or read about posters, offering rewards for bringing fifty dollars for bringing the scalp, redskin or bringing Redskin, in which meant the scalp, so it certainly segue into something. That was a negative connotation. So how did it come to be the name of this particular NFL franchise? That's a great question, so we go back to nineteen thirty two and for anybody listening I was not covering the team at that time so nineteen who? Shared a stadium with baseball's Boston braves, so they were called. The Boston braves the following year. They moved to Fenway Park with the Boston Red Sox, so the story that that no his come about from that is that they wanted some sort of. Alliteration with the Red Sox, and so they went with the Redskins, but they also had a coach Lone Star Dietz and several native American players on the roster, George Preston Marshall said he was naming it basically in part because they had a native American coach. Now there's controversy over long star deeds whether he was actually native American up, but that was the given explanation at that time.

"Right here. Chilly Fenway park today. You'll have to hit it well to get it out to left. It'll knock it down a little bit. Here's the one, and that's just outside ball to of course. It's just three hundred ten feet rumor to be three hundred ten feet down the left field line to the base of the monster. There are a lot of people who will swear they've beta somebody who took a tape measure out there, and it's like three zero two or two ninety eight or something like that. It goes out to three seventy nine it left center. Then four twenty of the triangle in deep right center field. Sweated two to three eighty two right field where the bullpen jar and just Rio to to the Paschke pull down the right field line. Did you like hitting here? I'd say that was deafening silence. Right there. It was like you were asking Dave Roberts about Yasmina granddaughter. Do you have lingering issues over hitting the Tutu, and it just missed inside a full count. We could move on to a happier. Topic of you on. I I liked the idea of hitting Ryon because it's a great ballpark. Great atmosphere and everything else. I don't know that the numbers really bear that out that you know, it was a good place for me to hit did hit a home run here. Which was was great finally got a hit off. Tim Wakefield one nine three two and Barnes just regular foul off in in and out of the data Vasquez who's on a happy with himself that.

"So I think what Pedro was saying is, if you're gonna make such a huge decision on such a grand state be accountable, we want to see your face the way we did some journalism. I want to thank my staff journalists. We found the two guys in the reap. Play booth, and they're describing the call here the two guys. We had no idea what it was. This belongs to the bed sauce, Fenway park, and you want to give. To them and it doesn't. Yes. These are the plan, facials rice. We would like, you know. Hey, look for something. Okay. Let's go to the dodgers series Milwaukee's very analytic driven. So the dodgers the dodgers have Machado star star. They've got Clayton Kershaw last night was a star amazing for me. I wanna see. I wanna see more of that than Craig counsel going to the mound. Eleven times. I will say this though the Machado play heat, listen, the cubs or the Yankees are going to get him. He's a remarkable talent doubted. You make you played some first bay just sir. Okay. Could I make the argument couple of nights ago that first baseman for the brewers creek Hayes through saggy. Laar. Okay. Why on the bag he's hovering over the bag after the out. Right. So Charles, like sending a message get off the bag necessarily think, man, hey, Suzanne is probably the biggest man on the field at that point in time right now from being an ex first baseman you always play little games with your infielders throughout the actual baseball game itself. Right? Right. There are SIA throws a great bender. Nice back and hit. Hey, sues right in the chest. What he is doing right there is just saying, hey, man, I appreciate that throw right to the chest. I'm going to let everybody know you hit me right where you're supposed to throw it. I've been a first basement before. There's a lot. "Slash sports reporters for more information, or I Ryan, let me ask you my friend, Mike barnicle this yesterday, the mayor of Fenway park. What was your mood? Like? What was your general wellness like when when Craig kimbrel began to try to give away game for in the bottom of the ninth at the big ballpark on Tuesday night, I and win a bowl left the bat of Sanchez. I went, oh my God, it's going to happen, and he's going to blow this game and and and the grace. Thank thank you. John Carlos Stanton convert socks means thank you enough with swinging at a pitch foot and a half outside in dirt strike three. No, they can't or. Taking three strikes in a, oh, by the way in the member and the other game. But anyway, oh my, oh, I do him. Of course. I thought I feared and worried about the Yankees all along. And here it was in nineteen. Kimball had nothing. He had no command. None the word command. If you have, if you wanna know folks, what command isn't isn't, you got the isn't by watching the fact that here's Kimball hitting people can't locate a fast count locker. He want look voice. You can't locate a curve. He he's, you know, he's, you know, the worst. Yes. Worst case scenario went up all that and then the dribbler and I'm thinking, oh my God, he's going to beat it out there going. Oh, we're going to extra. Oh my God. Yeah. Oh, cool. Here she's Bob, how, here's how am I could earn base? How about a guy at WALDO? Nunez who has no real position and steep Pierce who is essentially playing out of position Bob, you can watch pierces stretch and keeping his the side of his foot on the first base bag twenty times and say, there isn't a first baseman in baseball who could have made a better place than that. No, no..

"Outside the Yankees Fenway park. I'm says Waldman along with Aaron Boone. And looking at the lineup. Everybody's back in there. They'll guys were saying, well, we got the band back together DVD's in it Hicks us at everybody's ready to go. Yeah. Exciting obviously, having those two guys back. 'specially Didi where there's so much uncertainty there to have him really respond the last few days and to be sound to go, obviously, they're huge for our team as important two way players, you know, both both sides of the ball. What can you have stack hitting wise from GD, I'm in a terrorist attack? So it's still in there is long as he can manage the pain. Do you think that he can do what he usually does? Or is it strength. I I'm optimistic. Yeah. And then watching him hit on the last couple of days. No issues ball's coming off the bat. Really? Well, so I'm I'm I'm optimistic where he's at and that it's not going to be huge issue for any any trepidation at all about Hicks out there the ground is what it's been raining much of the day not much because really we felt like probably yesterday and even the day before he was ready to get back in there. So feel good about it. Feel like he's ready to go. And hopefully, go out and get this thing started off, right? And then get our guys the proper work. They need this weekend. Yeah. That's pretty much. What I was talking to Neil Walker and a bunch of the other guys about everybody very anxious to just clench this home field. So you can start resting guys in putting people in line. How important it is? And how important is it in a managerial way to be able to get this thing clinched? That'd be huge. Because then it allows us to. Just work lows. Make sure guys are getting their bats. If we want to give a guy a day or give the guy a few innings off. If we want to pitch a certain guy in a certain situation, you can kind of do all those things that really set yourself up heading into Wednesday. But first things first. What is Jay had mentioned this team since he's come over here? Wow. It's just been so reliable actually more than reliable. He's been so good for us. Sure on the ball. Well, with the exception of one outing where he struggled a little bit even on the outings where he hasn't been great. He still manages to keep the other team down and get us into the middle innings routinely. No matter what. He's just been everything we had hoped. We did make the move for him. I have to ask you one one thing because I know fans have now started a gofundme page to get that money. When people on the other team Carlos Gomez taking their Twitter at saving how much he respected him for doing that kind of thing when you look at everything that happened the respect this has in this league is quite overwhelming. Yeah. I don't know if we needed a reminder. To see some of the coverage. Some of the comments. You understand what a giant is in our sport just from a reputation standpoint. And he furthered it. I guess the other day. Okay. All right. Thank you. As always you bet that.
