"Airflow, which keeps the smoke trapped near the surface in our area. Unfortunately, we don't have a lot of flow in the lower levels to really get a lot of improvement. Meteorologist Dana Felton with the national weather service says until we get that onshore flow to push the air and smoke east, it'll be with us likely until later in the day on Thursday. I also asked Felton what that means for firefighting weather conditions and he says over the weekend, we'll switch back to an offshore flow with dry air. The surface winds don't look like they'll be too bad. So it's not optimum, but it doesn't look like it's going to be very bad. Felton also tells me that switch back to an east to west air flow means there's a good possibility it'll push the smoke right back our way next week. Ryan Harris northwest news radio. The national weather service tells us this is the driest summer dating back to 1945. Meteorologist Dustin guy decided to crunch the numbers, and learn sea tac The Rain gauge of record received nearly one half inch of rain between June and September. Prior to about 2015, we just didn't see summers like we've seen lately with all the smoke and between the abnormally dry conditions and the higher temperatures. I mean, the summer is not the way it used to be. 2017 was a close second, but guy also says our winters have been wetter. "And sold more ice cream than anyone who's ever lived. And newsflash, ice cream is not a health food. And so for him, he had an investment. Major. To say the least in saying there's no connection between diet and health, right? It's all genetics. Right. But he went ahead and made these changes because he wanted to live. Right. And he became an example, I think, to the rest of us, that major change is possible. Right. And it can lead to major benefits, right? At any age. And so, you know, I think that that's something that's a story that really moved me in my youth. As did the tens of thousands of letters that we received as a family in response to my dad's book. He put a little memo in the back saying, hey, if you were inspired by this, write me at this PO box, basically. Nice. The PO box got in the Felton, California, which was where the PO box was located at one point, there were over half of the mail coming to that PO system was for responses to my dad's book. Every day there'd be a box full of letters and we'd have to go in person 'cause the PO box couldn't fit it. Neither could a PO drawer. We were kind of taking over the post office. And it was all people saying like, thank you, you've changed my life, like tens of thousands of real handwritten letters. This is back before email, you know? Right, of course. So growing up as a youngster, seeing that. Right. Wow, this stuff is powerful. And so I found it a nonprofit when I was 16. I didn't just want to do what my dad did. So being a little rebellious, I worked with young leaders around the world in 65 countries focused on social justice, peace, human rights, and sustainability. It was kind of a youth leadership. Nonprofit, and called yes, or yes world. It's still going to this day. And but I directed that for 20 years. And as I work with leaders, all over the planet, I kept seeing that what we're eating is having this massive impact. And you know, I work with indigenous leaders in the Amazon who are telling us about how their rainforest homeland was being destroyed for cattle grazing and for soy plantations to guess what? Feed livestock. Oh, right. And I saw indigenous leaders in the Arctic, who are dependent on the Caribou herds for their survival. And those Caribou hoods are now threatened by climate change. And then I saw the UN reports showing us that cows impact our climate more than cars do. Yeah, brilliant as well. In light of this, I said, I've got to focus on food. You know, if we want to really change the world and help heal lives and heal the world, we got to focus on food. So, you know, I joined with my dad in 2012 to launch food revolution network with the mission of healthy ethical and sustainable food for all. And this has been my passion ever since. And we really do want to change the way the world eats. And it's a big mission. But it's happening. You know, honestly, it's happening right now. We are seeing profound almost unimaginable changes at the rate of change. I mean, the number of Americans who identify as vegan has 30 X 30 fold increase in the last 15 years. Who would have thought that would happen. And we're not all about vegan per se, but the number of people who are interested in eating more plant foods is about half the population now. Exactly. You know, that's where you start to get major change when it like half the population is saying, hey, this is possible. And just like we've seen changing cars, you know, we went from electric cars being a weird outlier to being like the future of the automotive industry. I would say that plant proteins and plant foods in general are the future of the food industry. And that's a good news for our planet. And I agree a 110%. When we talk about those sustainability in food. So again, kind of back to people that are living in their house and they're working doing whatever they're living their life. And we're talking about sustainably grown food. What do you mean by sustainably grown food versus I'm just going to go to the grocery store and buy what is in the grocery store. So kind of help us understand sustainably grown food. Well, sustainable is a catch phrase that can mean a lot of different things. And there is no official definition, but I'll tell you some things to look out for. So organic matters. Organic is a certification and it means that no unapproved pesticides were used insecticides, herbicides, fungicides, and it also means that no chemical fertilizers were used in the production of that food. And in the case of animal products, it means that they were fed organic feed as well. And so, you know, organic is a big deal because most of our food is being contaminated, not just with insecticides that kill bugs, but also with herbicides that kill weeds, but that also end up in the food chain. So like glyphosate, which is the main active ingredient in roundup, is a probable carcinogen, an endocrine disruptor, and it's been patented as an antibiotic. So it can disrupt, right? This is now the most widespread pesticide in use today. Just to be clear, pesticide is includes all of the biocides herbicides fungicides and insecticides are all considered pesticides. Some people are confused on that point..

And there's a wonderful segment where she and one of her music students play pilot, music passages from Bach, which require that you play a passage forward and backward at the same time in order for it to be what the composer intended. And it's quite lovely. Both of them have these burping bed posts as they're called. And it's really quite brilliant. They also have a great shot of her playing the oboe at the spiral J in the great Salt Lake, which is just outstanding. Just wonderful stuff. 877-929-9673. "Another hiking term I came across in the book journeys north by Barney scout man is hiker midnight, any guess what hiker midnight is? Hi care, midnight. Wow. I don't know. I'm kind of thinking about halfway between when you put up your tent and when you get up, which isn't necessarily the middle of the night since you often set up your tent well before dusk and you often get up well before dawn. Yeah, that's pretty much it. Barney says it's 9 p.m.. You've hiked 20 miles or 30 miles and midnight comes at 9 p.m.. You are just out. Oh yeah, none of this romantic sitting around the fire to the early hours because you're just finished. You're beat. Yeah, hiker midnight. 8 7 7 9 9 9 6 7 three. "Plan so for example. I mean this is one of the things. I get really excited about because i don't see a lot of places in sort of normal culture where these things are recognized and yet our language as i discuss in the book is completely littered with had so you think about some of the common expressions like if somebody is really happy and joyful right we might say they're lighthearted right that's common or if they're very generous We say they're warmhearted or open. Hot it severe like why is that. Why why do we say. These things is it. Just a nice turn of phrase. Is that just a you know a nice metaphor and it turns out that it genuinely 'isms that if you sense the sensations of your chest if you tune in to the felt sense the immediate sensations the palpable sensations of your chest. Right in time as you sense that area if you notice one day when you're feeling happy you might actually notice that you can sense the likeness there so the way that we talk about it commonly in the language actually points to something. That's really real. That you can sense you can feel this lights kind of openness and if you're feeling down and miserable you might actually notice that your heart feels heavy so they that expression heavy hearted is actually something you can sense so these things turned out to be not just metaphors. If we pay attention to our felton's tents we can actually discover this and this becomes the doorway this connection with the immediate felt tense of our experience to discovering what in the diamond approach we call presence by so the more you cultivate your sensing capacity you might notice that likeness in your heart at first feels light and you might notice it feels like a bubbling up like an at some point you might notice. Oh it actually feels like the joy itself. It's like in your heart in your chest area. There's this light. Bubbling up expensive sweet sense of joy right and it. Can you the more. When refines that capacity you might begin to notice colors or textures Sounds the whole inner. Sort of capacity sensing and a lot of people think that sounds sort of mysterious. We'll what's that about but really the truth is if you just pay attention to to these sensations you can begin to notice it So we it. Turns out that we can sense the very Immediate states of consciousness when all consciousness is in a condition of joy we can really directly sense the joy. When we're feeling love we can directly sense. Oh yeah there's some kind of presence in my heart that feels like love is unmistakably. That's what it is or that feels like kindness right. That's exactly what it is. I can sense in my heart. This warm gentle often green sort of presence like some kind of substance. That's there that i experienced in my chest. now it's obviously not the usual sort of medical anatomical model of your chest. It's not like if you open your chest. If you a light-hearted you're gonna find it. Looks any different right but experience in your experience it really does so and this applies then to the all those different qualities in the heart. We noticed with many different qualities in the mind. And maybe you can think of when you felt open minded ride and you notice your head feels light an open and expanded as opposed to some days. When like everything's on top of you you get ol- contracted and dense and thick and your mind.

Why vincent this creek with it up but it was never intended to be like an actual board until events decided was an extra report it was meant for me to just basically rise out of the. That's why the whole thing was black and in certain shots. You couldn't really see that. The board was elevating. It was more of a The visual trick trick was like material that was materializing smoke. I thought it was. I thought it was different. I thought it was going. I thought it's such a cool layer to the entrance. Thought added a cool layer to you. Know the alastair black character and dislike entrances in general. I like to think that if you go back in the modern era perhaps not the past era but in the modern era. I think that my entrance is virtually very very within a unique entrance. Like sure to more unique. Entrances that like we've had in the past ten fifteen years. I'm sure there's plenty more that were equally or even more unique the mind. But i'd like the thing that that is definitely for for the last five years. The people go to go like. Oh those very memorable allegation. There's a lot of of of talking about paul heyman and being big A supporter of ours. Because at that point in time he actually might have been booking the show. You'll either way all was very much backing you. Becoming a very major player agreed Since they wanted me and paul meshed. I love that man. I have so much love that man. He's always been really good to me. He's been Blunt with me. Which i appreciate appreciate people being blunt than me. I don't like to dance are subject. Just tell me how it is especially in this business on percents yes especially in this business ball had big ideas with matches me but with with you know a lot of younger people like buddy murphy was being one of them as well. He wants told me that he had one night of control. That was the first night he was on the one night. That was yup gotcha and after that everything became a flight. Then everything became you know. Well maybe a fight is other right were but every day at the bates yes and which which i can understand you know but sometimes it makes you wonder and i let that go of what what could be because we were fighting tooth and nail to get out the room because the room needed the progress because it was the same thing weaken week out in the promos. Bmi became more and more vague. Oh you're doing your room to knock on your door or something and you know that ran for a little bit and people started you know i. It came but as it was as it was supposed to transition to something else. It didn't so it kind of went back down because we wanted to get into one point and then completely switch it up. Yeah because that's how you do. That's how you progress to the next level and this had in my opinion had shelf life. And i think paul felton had shelf to and we just wanted to progress but the progression was just never approved. The progression just never came. And eventually i became his lost in shovel and because the progression be the discussion wasn't had and when the discussion was tried to be coined it never went anywhere no matter how many times i knocked on the door and tried to sit down and like explain and like look. We gotta do something like look. You know. we're good here for now. And i'm like no we need to feel exactly because you know when you're when you're in the business for so long you feel when it's time to like shift die nasir you know i feel that's how you've been able to reinvent herself so many times because you knew all right i can. I can take this so here. Now got to switch it up. And how i felt like now we gotta do something new and i thought that after the buddy murphy thing here we go and then it was right back in the room and it was like god that was the wrong move because we have momentum at steam but he went with south because he did a feud buddy. Yes ma'am buddy. Had a little mini. Few like basically what what what he wanted to do. I wanted to set something between you and buddy that we can come back on romanian three or four years. Maybe five years down the line where we lay a foundation naseer exactly and five years from now we circle back around him but we make it bigger bigger stage and we can draw from. You know you guys did there. You know it rights itself. Because that's how wrestling's done right you plant some seeds copiers down the line you pay it off. Because that's that's the beauty of what we do. We don't have to immediately like grab. Grab a shovel and like dig and right now we can. We can let it sit for a while. But it just never went there. I never really felt that transcended despite what you know. The promise were what the words were and you know like point. You feel like you've throwing everything into the wall. Like the main breaker switch that powers the entire store so felton says he did that and then they all went back to. Charlie had parked his van. Which is on the other side of the fence from the store. then he tells investigators. Tommy said oh what the hell all just crackle window so then. He jumps over the fence in his own store. Parking lot picked up a metal pipe and swung against one of the stores back windows so he broke the window to his own store. Yes that's what he said. Belton tells them that tommy was saying he didn't have the store key with him at the time but like still wanted to give charlie the tv. He could like have at christmas morning. I guess didn't wanna wait. Didn't want to go back. Whatever but i guess at this point charlie was like yeah no things like. I don't need it that badly for you to break your own window like this isn't making sense. So tommy said fine. Let's go back to my house and get the key. Which then they did and on the way back to the store. Tommy handed charlie a box of bullets and asked him to reload the gun. Felton says that once they got back to the store. Tommy tried to get both him and charlie into the store with him so they could pick up the tv. But thomas has by this point like with everything that's happened. I'm actually gonna tell myself that like self talk because it helps me then. Identify with the expectations of today. Should look like otherwise. I always had this. I'm empty today and this is boring and i wasn't. I wasn't present. Because i wasn't calibrating where i should be today mentally. I like that because we often. I know i felton in these past years where i'm been trying to my life where just trying to find meaning outside of work because from the moment i graduated high school and you could argue even in highschool till january of twenty twenty. I had a place to go every morning. That was outside my control. And so without that i had been lazy are i did something and trying to rewire your mindset. Where you're the only one that suffers if you don't do something is really difficult and it took almost a full year or to get there and now is the spring comes and the winter goes away here in wisconsin. I just feel a more presence with what goes on around me. And even just this is simple idea of understanding that. Catch myself when i say there's not enough time today like that's my early warning indicator. That's the sirens going off. There's an air raid coming in my head of. Something's gonna get ready to like. I'm overwhelmed kind of feeling coming on. And when i recognize that i pull back and think okay i have all the time in the world. Everybody has the same amount of time and anytime that i've just slowed down. No my routine like you said. Trust a routine. It's amazing. what can get done like laundries. A great example. That feels like men is forty five minutes laundry up there but if i just said the intention and the kids on the bus i go upstairs. I get that laundry done. It takes ten minutes and it's always my berge of it my head that usually messes it up and just trusting and being present and even just when the kids get on the bus going for a ride and hey my daughter like hey listen to the birds like there is so much they can come from just grounding yourself and five cents since you have at that can really help slow down time. And i know that there's kind of this oxymoron than always liked to say that we've never had more time in the history of human beings really because you didn't have to go inside targeted anymore yet. More and more people say. I don't have time and it's like how much more time do you need. We don't do dishes. We don't do our own laundry like there are so many things were automated like. You don't have to try to figure out directions but yet we still have this falsehood that there's not enough time and so that's why i have that aerate signer because that's my early indicator that had heading in a direction where the laws universe breakdown. I'm always heading into the places that i need to myself like. There's as much time as i choose to make. I just have to make sure. I stay present with not worrying about. Do i have enough time. Totally totally agree with that. And even with business look at the yuan musk's that were alleged joining lake three. You know. Billion dollar companies dates fifty companies..

"With flashing light with ships. Going by on a inlet and we had a case and then in england and salt pretty much quiet. You know you could go out and things like that Or remember on. Christmas came one time and i went off from good on a bus and it was kind of 'cause nobody else was on the bus. And all but i just wanted to get all of the Cap and i will say something about the people over there. I had occasion one day and plymouth to be walking along. I met this young girl. She was seventeen and we talked through what outside little restaurant where the had famous for the english cod fish. They can chips. And i walked back to where she lived and then she told me that. Her mother was killed by the bombing. Your father was off somewhere and she had an older sister and she was in the military somewhere. Socio staying with some other people were taken care of her and the the area you have to say that the people over there even though the not involved in the military power but they were exposed to the war and the churches were down schools. Houses rubbish everywhere. So they're part of it all as far as the suffering in the grief and not knowing you know we're a file was not knowing where assistant was but knowing her mother was gone. Then what sir. After you went back to england then where did you go. That was rather the termination Of my Ventures over to france and i remained on that station. They called vicarage barracks and plymouth and then word came that the wall was over and those jubilation everywhere and they had a parades a huge prayed and the the americans much along the streets and the people's sharing everything now that was the termination of it.

"The thoughts were concern for those that had to continue on and what they faced in there at like the battle of the bulbs situation which this young lady here. Her husband was born. Nineteen twenty five years in the army and he was involved in the battle of the bulge so as bad we heard about that subsequently huw many lives were lost. Their you know a lot of lives. That was a difficult situation there. Where did you go after that. The ship was on returned to england. Things have settled down a lot on the beach beachhead. I returned from england. Analysis t to sure berg which was not the al-nabi talk to the east somewhat on part of the land with sticks out quite a bit and i was assigned there to a A tower as a segment With a shower of seven in the morning to three three to eleven eleven seven communicating will ships out there and it was all doc this and i recall one scary night there. I had the shift at eleven o'clock at night. To seven and from the barracks was probably a quarter of a mile to walk to where the towel was. Because it was way way out on the peninsula and ships would come in the daytime and dry docks you familiar with dry docks ship would command in the water and unload so in the mornings there would be big piles you know the year for people to carry wherever they're really carry them to on. This particular night was walking along to get to the end of it with the towel was and to climb up on that and then On the side there was all piles way way as high as the house almost and then the areas where the ships are gonna be nothing but water there. And i was walking along and all of a sudden i heard a voice behind me and i turn it was a german voice and i turn my head. I saw what to me was a huge guy and he had a long coat and he was behind me and he spoken when he was probably a column and back over toward the water pot and i them saw him or you know. I was always a fast runner. But i think on that might. I could have won the olympics. 'cause i took running and i don't think my heels and we'll touch slow touch the ground all toes because i didn't have a gun or anything we didn't carry on and there i go took away and the ran for my life because obviously was going to hit me over the head and tossed me into the water. He came out from behind you. He was hiding. And when i pass by he came back out and was behind me walking toward me so it was pretty obvious what he's up to but he made the mistake of speaking instead of walking silently and hit me so that was a real skewer looking back upon it did they ever apprehend him. Oh i don't know okay. Now share was a very busy place. That was the main port where all the supplies were coming in. So yes describe what it was like there say was the communication pilot but the things were settled down. You know not like was earlier. So how long were you in cherbourg. And where did you go after. That clinton by departure from sherbert was back to england and on england again on a show stump of a.

"It's ingrained into so to communicate properly. Slow make sure the spaces of there and the same thing in receiving the light from somebody else do the same way but unfortunately a lot of the don fast and they can't like person talking too fast so you have to really space to do it. Trump lawyer we'll talk more about that. We'll also talk about what happened with you and your ship on d day when we come back on veterans chronicles. Welcome back to veterans chronicles on the radio america network. I'm greg columbus honored to be joined today by carl felton. He is a world war. Two veteran of the us navy and also served at the allied invasion at normandy known as d day which. We'll talk about in just a moment. sir when were you assigned to the series. Well following the training to be a single mon. We once again. The train and went to the Plymouth angolan on the shore and a once again went into barracks and during a period of two weeks. Or so we were doing like waking potties a gathering supplies for the ships and we were in warehouses some of which were i ammunition and cutting out also transporting to various ships and that went on for about two weeks and then after that by random all of us were placed on various ships and I was placed on a british ship. called hms series cer es and that was an old One thousand nine hundred eighteen will war one ship per year old and it was a communication ship. It was not designed at the time to fire. You know what you're up lames because they didn't want to track attention. Apparently we had a lot of high ranking officers on that ship and Some german ships plans came by overhead. And pass by where i was then. They went in land and dropped some bombs you know in there and then came back out again and I will never forget when the planes came by the officers were up. Top looking at the sky and british sailor of myself were up there also and when the plane came in from the channel from france over he and i would run that way you know toward the wada and duck. That's that's young. you didn't know that. If they ever hit everything will blow up anyway but we did that and then when they went in and the on that way we ran again..

Were all young and we're trying to learn and he's trying to teach us stuff the big jump that you talked about that they had you do. That was the height of two stories. Was that so if you had to jumped ship you had experienced doing well. That's why we're doing. Casey held a jump off ship. Well you also learned Communications that was your position later on d day. So how did you learn communications aboard the series or any other ship well upon leaving sampson new york regard on a train on down to ninety two new york city. Were there for a little bit in brooklyn and a hotel. I guess and then they put us on a truck. All traveled by truck squeezed in to the queen. Mary and the queen. Mary took off from new york city. And nobody knew we were going. Always in the doc. You don't know but we did know. There was traveling south so people used to be saying where we going. What are we going all the people say. Well let's get more must be going there florida or somewhere but what a was voiding. The the area between england in new york with the u boats were frequently ships crossing back and forth. That was the purpose without we learn later. Them on a cross. Spain and up into scotland upon arriving in scotland Say for a week or so we would just you know just there and then one day. Some officers summoned everybody together. We had maybe couple hundred.

Tennessee Issues Statement on Termination of Nine Employees and Jeremy Pruitt

"Tarrant tennessee. No parting of the ways. No resignation fired. Jeremy pruitt after an internal investigation the chancellor of the university chancellor plowman earlier today the personnel actions. We are announcing. Today are an indication of the gravity of what we've discovered today. Athletic director fomer and i issued termination letters to the following assistant. Football coaches brian. Nita meyer and shelton felt also four members of our on campus football recruiting staff additionally our director and assistant director of football player personnel and finally a football analyst quality control coach. So what are what are Council has told us is it. We're looking at level one and level two violations. I don't know yet yet. Exactly how many or exactly the specifics of it the chancellor earlier today and we have the live coverage here blake top. Mayer has covered the story from the beginning and he joins us early evening from knoxville blake. Good evening thanks for being with us and before we get to specific just describe. What this day has been like in knoxville. Well obviously the big news that we've been waiting for call for a probably at least a month now and in the the question for at least the lack last week or more has been. Is jeremy Going to get outright fired for cause or is he going to get fired with a settlement for reduced by out. I mean i. It felt like inevitable that a coaching change was coming. And we've got the answer today. That pruitt's being fired for cause. Tennessee does not intend to pay him. One cent of his twelve point six million dollar buyout also included in the four. 'cause firings Were systems. Brian eater myron shelton felton in the termination letter to jeremy pruitt tennessee chancellor plowman outlined six four. 'cause provision of jeremy pruitt's contract University believe he violated and of course all stems to be ongoing investigation into sweeping recruiting if violations That have occurred or are believed to have occurred within tennessee's program during pruitt's watch like so many things unpack the chancellor said. She threw her own program under the bus. And i understand the tendency to pile on but having covered many of these before as you have. That was really unprecedented address. That if you don't mind it's obvious that the chancellor is frustrated beyond frustrated with the the amount of malfeasance that i think she sees within the football program. I mean these. I think it's fair to call these sweeping violations. And what she believes they're going to be major violations. stemming from the football program She she mentioned that she was stunned. By both the number of interactions and the number of people involved in the infractions. And so you know. It doesn't leave tennessee in a great position to come out on the other side of this and say you know hey. Nca take it on us there. There really wasn't that much bad going on here. You know you've seen a lot of athletic departments kind. Play that card with the ncaa play hardball with the ncaa and say that they weren't breaking rules. I think tennessee is is quite clearly taking me approach of Of admitting its its mistakes. upfront here Firing the people that believes are responsible for the mistakes and then going forward is going to have to pivot and try to likely self imposed penalties and hope that that can fend off Some of the harshest punishment from from the ncaa but it does leave it in a difficult scenario here as it goes forward not only with the ncaa but as it tries to hire and athletic director and it tries to attract a football coach.

"Last time we examined Angelo and Kenny's turbulent childhoods. They're toxic attitudes toward women and their first three murders. Today will cover the series of strangulations that had Los Angeles on edge as well as the fateful falling out that brought the cousins on done. We've got all that and more coming up stay with us. More by early November, nineteen, seventy seven cousins, forty-three-year-old Angelo Bono Junior and twenty, six year old Kenny Bianchi Felton principle they'd raped and murdered three women and loved it. There I. Two victims were sex workers known to frequent the sunset strip and their most recent kill was an aspiring professional dancer and waitress but to Angelo and Kenny they were all the same. The cousins tossed the naked bodies of all three women along the. Roads and hillsides of Los Angeles noticing the similarities between the murders authorities suspected they had a serial killer on their hands and they quickly -duced that the killer wasn't working alone the lack of fingerprints, footprints and tire tracks at each dumpsite suggested that the killer had help. There was no way one person could carry and dump the bodies alone but not wanting to tip the killers off police withheld their theory from the media. then. Again, there wasn't much media attention on the murders yet and with little coverage in the press Angelo and Kenny felt free to choose their next victim on the streets of Hollywood and this time they wanted to be more discerning in who they picked. Angelo had a taste for strawberry blondes and firmly believed that younger was always better. If they were going to commit a crime, they figured the woman had to be. Worth it. She had to be beautiful enough to kill in Hollywood. It's not hard to find looks to die for and on November Ninth Nineteen, Seventy seven Angelo and Kenny noticed a striking blonde waiting at a bus stop along the sunset strip twenty-eight-year-old Jane King was a stunner who'd look years younger than her age she was perfect. Kenny approached the aspiring actress with a friendly smile and took a seat beside her on the. Ever the charmer he engaged Jane in friendly conversation for a few minutes carefully building a rapport with her as he listened to. Jane chataway Kenny. Feign surprise when Angelo pulled up beside them in the Cadillac playing the part Angelo offer them both a ride home which Kenny readily accepted Jane hesitated at first. But when Kenny flashed a badge and told her, he was in the police reserves, she happily got into the car.

Mac Power Users: The Notes Roundup

"Let's start with you. Know the one the default for so many people and that's the apple notes up. Yeah, and if you had told somebody ten years ago, Hey, in a decade apple is to be really good, and everyone's just gonNa use it because it's on the phone and the computer and everything you may have been laughed out of the room. Young 'cause the apples history to get rid is now is full of bad ideas. Yeah, I would've just L.. O. L.. L. O., L. L. O. L. IN MERCKER Felton sent it to you. Yeah, and I think of anything. So, way back in the day on the Mac. Apple added both notes and reminders to the mail application. I guess you could see that you have like. Oh, I can make a reminder a note out of the sandbox message or something I never one of those things to be mixed. And it did so using weird I met folders, and so you kind of have them on your other devices. That was really really hit or miss, and it was only in the mail APP for a few versions of Mac Os ten, and then it slowly. Away think apple realize no one was using it. While also I have to the the. Team didn't have the I cloud backbone at the time. Oh No, no, we're talking like. That was even before dropbox so psyched they're like. HOW'RE WE GONNA SINK? These notes and somebody said Hey. Let's use I'm APP which. Is Really Putting a square peg into a round hole, probably with a lot of force, but it did kind of work. I never used it either because I never trusted your. We're talking like Mac os ten Tiger Leopard. I mean way way back in the day. But that came and went, and the original iphone showed up, and it had notes APP you made a marker felt joke a second ago. That was the font used. which is like the one step classier than Comic Sans? I think just my personal typeface feelings. I'm not sure, but it's definitely I'm not sure it's classier. But the it's really funny that that APP came out of Apple. Let's just say that. Right. It didn't sink with anything eventually you got I map sinking, but I think the idea was the original iphone. NO THIRD PARTY APPS Houston to place to like. Something really quickly and in those early days I used it on the iphone on occasion, but once there were third party applications on the phone. Apple notes really just really fell behind. It really got to a point where. No one who needed any real features could use it because it was so simple and so basic. But then things started getting better in Iowa nine. That was the big release where we kind of got very one of apple notes as we know it today, yeah, I, mean thinks in just kind of better. It was I. Remember walking out of that keynote, thinking what the heck just happened to apple notes. It was like they fired the old one into the sun. And out of that the Phoenix flu, you know and it was. Brand new APP with an actual sinking platform that made sense. The marker felt was gone. It had organization and it was supposed to work on all your devices, and it was like I. Guess Apple had been paying attention to all these third party apps and finally said okay. We can do this, too. Yeah and Iowa's. I'M GONNA put in the show notes Federico's I was on review. Because when you look at it, it is clearly the foundation they've built on ever since and in the. I guess five years or so since Iowa's nine, they've added so many features. You can use it to scan documents and you can do a lot of sharing. Were Talk About Apple? Pencil stuff showed up. And that continues to get better. It really gave them a modern base to work from, and it's on the MAC now, and that wasn't true. In Iowa's nine. It took I think another year for the MAC version to catch up, but is now everywhere including the Web I cloud dot com. And it's it's pretty Dang good.

Jump Racing Stars Return: Weekend Review

"Tracy hello welcome back to the show. Thank you having me back again. Your debut went condone an absolute storm. So no pressure no pressure no I loved it Alaska and so it's good to be getting back into the national hunt side of it at this time as well Have you been reading out much at Tom Georgia stable and have you any info for us. Yeah yeah that's it. Yeah the form is kicking in now as well broke. Because I mean it's well documented. Isn't it with Tom. Sources that they take take a little bit of warming up for the season but OC big guns are coming out now with at some available in black off. Yeah the WHO is going really well. So it's worth getting early in the mornings as mornings getting the leaker at the minutes are going and see yes bro Policy Hoses now into getting getting sits on the. Yeah as we see the frost in the morning and it's dark when we wake up early in the morning and it's getting during the evenings aren't stretching out like they used to but the great thing about it though is that we get to talk about jumps racing and a man who has so many fingers in in so many different pies and so access to so much information is at the races pundit. Mr Kevin Blake the award nominated Nominated Kevin Blake by the way. And if I said this earlier in the year if you don't win this year it's an absolute disgrace time was. has you sound confident. You're sounding confidence. Speech is better than that. Yeah thanks boy. Simon Rowlands also dominated from the racist dot com and rightly so at the races. Dot Com have got Microsoft for the jumps which Kevin has contributed to so to podcasts favorite. Toni Keenan and many others. There is some gold gold information there so highly. Recommend you check it. It'll come up on the at the races. Main page click into it info gold like therefore you speaking of let's look back at some of the highlights. The weekend we saw Nicky Henderson unleash some of his Cheltenham Festival hopes. There were two big races that to you his young guns running and they won but this a bit of question marks over both of them after their performances I would say. Let's start with Santini. We were recording on Mondays. This was yesterday the Virgin bit future stars into media chase at sandown. He just about beat now McGinty to be fair talk. His jeep brand. No SORTA racing was well back in thirty lengths behind winner if the bet three six five or whatever the hell it's called now Cup At sandown. What what did you make of this performance to start the season for Santini kitschy? Yeah it was. Laborious believes the mean Nicky Henderson came out himself and he's a very strict toolkit very nicky Henderson and he said himself you know he's the first one to say that it was is a bit of a struggle facade teeny and but everyone saw him before one hundred and he was he was pretty big weightwise in the PRELIMS US country down to post and I was in the shooter day so we got the full coverage of him and we had a Ken encore in. He rang up to preview the race. What he'd seen in paddock and he just said some teeny he said he? He is big and so naturally he's GonNa come on. Fritz and Nicky Henderson said himself that he's a really it difficult to gauge way. You all with him and he says he doesn't really do a tapa home so he does always need to run and he does always come among for it but he was just always behind the bridal luckily McGinty gave him the lead. Because I'd save Santini a hot to make his own running essay he would have been an idol out in front probably would have lost a few links at his at his fences so not reasonably. He's not going for the king. George now probably move based on His run in Felton noses lush. Da were finishing the. It's just. He's a big horse. He needs galloping. Track in Camden. I'm doing is just to shop for him. Say Rid of a blessing in disguise from a from that point of view but no we. Didn't he just in seconds. Let's talk about him briefly. I thought he ran blinder. I vote he had a sneaky chance going into it of Sierra Stuart Edmonds usage. You never have any fears. What so ever I? I'm out that they are going to be a shooting to perfect shen for that race. Either master trainer of course in terms of he feeds them to the heavens Today that he makes himself but he trains them really hard. So they're tough. They're always fit but they have a plenty enough energy and enthusiasm in them to go well so he runs on an absolute blind just being behind the bridal early on another one a and Tommy Bryan made really decisive move in just getting him up with the pace Properly make his mind evidence fences and forcing the issue and and baking his fitness toby source Santini country down to post and thought he have the fitness to a retention prevail over him. But he'll go to Welsh national on our which We will have a massive massive chance in that providing Yeah is his jumping still say as well which he had a little bit of an issue last last time Last season one hundred with fresh early on how to get Genieford Huntington very unseated Karen Gatherings at day. So he's an yeah. He's a really nice looking forward but yes I'm teeny is going to have to come on a lot. He's got approved himself. Invest Higher Rankings. So Santini is rory largs idea of the Gold Cup winner will come to my selection who has reappeared hidden very much disappointed already this season but this was his first our start. He's threes on Kev. Are we being overly harsh on Nikki source. Is it just a case of while he's come out in these one or would you look at this. This is a forerunner race. You should've known by further. Yeah and I'm pretty disappointed. SULFITE Very Labor which you wouldn't really expect it's an honor horses seasonal reappearance. They should be more exuberant than normal really under the seasonal return and he was very labor. It needed to be driven away from fences dances relatively early in the race and just made really hard work of hired to put a number on. What now McGinty did in Iran up to himself or was he was he just blow himself Out of his wallet. Because they're a monetary of the rest having raised the Gallup so very disappointing. Look you'd never judge a horse too harshly on on one. Go with again. The next day was if he shapes in in in any way similar fashion. IB reaching for cheek pieces or blinkers curse or something like that. Because I think he shaped like a horse that needed them there and you know. It's it's puzzling Nikki. Seemingly isn't considering the Christmas chasing Jason efforts down for him. If he doesn't want to go to the King George that would be the natural target for I think Nikki is a small bit allergic to go to Ireland anytime buyer the Punchestown unfestive which is Pity because you'd imagine the effort sound would play to his strengths. Why is that though because the the lexus chases aces used to be known? Now the Leopardstown Chris Denman came over for best mate. Came over for it. Pretty sure L.. Best mate got got beaten in it by the infamous for Salmon Salmon. Paul carberry celebration but it is the ideal race for him and yeah look. Nikki is tell them focused. It doesn't like to travel before it and I think that's ultimately it okay. Well let's take a look at some of the other horses reappeared who are second season chasers and this means that we have the opportunity to talk about this yet. The ladbrokes champion chase down royal was won by Roach. Respect is a real funnel podcast favorite mostly. Thanks to Kim Blake Cleanser Soba was well held back in seconds. The King George Winner Alpina so back in third. We'll talk about jockey bookings a little bit later on and then there was Delta work all the way back and forth. Who was my idea of the Gold Cup winner? I was really perplexed by this. Was this In your view Kate a real case of. It's very early in the season. Let's not panic or would you be a little bit worried. The cleanser Soba was beaten so easily the delta work was well held. Maybe we're not giving them respect to Russia respect. Yeah I royer I. I definitely think it's way too early for me to take any sorts of judgement entitled to send in a Kuna cools after the race. I mean it's been well documented over stars who their seasons pools horses will very much needed the Ron and you kind of thought the fact that Kandebow was making the journey over that he might Well have that fitness on his side. He may be a bit more focused on the fact they were going that way but I think he he shaped really well and You know I caridi wouldn't read too much into that and Yeah he's A. I think he's a really nice progressive. Who Still Use Yucca? Plenty enough it gives you everything folks on this end of the season at this stage. Now it's not for me to read too much into

"I guess maybe the best list of SAR would be talking about like what Inertia Jay actually is? What problems does it try to solve? Especially Ashley with In comparison to the approach that we talked about las on the podcast. Yeah for sure. Let's let's dig in. So I think I think it actually works out pretty well kind of where this conversation ended last time and kind of where I went with that am kind of following that discussion So to recap a little bit which you already did A bit the whole idea that our the whole problem. I was trying to solve When we spoke last time was was really Trying to simplify my applications I was using I build my applications using Lavelle and I use blade read also use view whenever I need some sort of interactivity which in my applications I found that I want to use view more and more it was just just a very natural thing that happened in my apps I have a lot of. My apps are Pretty Standard Web APPs that have forms a lot of forms and what I wanted an often reach for view to kind of help me build those forms and build those pages I kind of not totally satisfied. Fight with what I can produce just Houston Classic Server side server side Tempting and form submissions. So what had happened is I would have my APP which would have all my road to my controllers that would render these blade templates so server side views which inside of them would contain some html and then in addition to that would also have a a certain amount of view components kind of Mixed in with that. HTML and that worked pretty good. This is pretty standard right But the problem that I faced faced with that is I was constantly juggling between my blade templates and my view templates owes I found myself self jumping back and forth from blade to my view components. And I found that like a very UN like Yeah it just didn't feel a very good way to it was kind of just an non efficient Sort of constantly having to shift the two different paradigms between like server side Renner template in language and a fully javascript rendering system. And I think the even the most annoying part was that I would have situations situations where I'd have a page in my APP that I needed to add some sort of simple javascript functionality to it and I would have to I found myself constantly taking these blade templates that I had written and having to convert them over to view templates and I found that kind of a painful process like oh I just want to add this one simple piece of functionality. shirow maybe it's some sort of conditional loading based on state or something else and now I have to go through the process of converting this template to view template. And I just I. I really didn't like that. I just kind of wanted to be able to get in make a change and not have a small little thing. Turn into an hour long job just because I happen to read it in blade originally so that really like pushed me so what. I ended up finding myself doing as this evolve. I ended up finding myself creating these page components so In view so I have these view page components. So what would end up happening. was I'd have my controller. which would render a blade template and that blade template would literally have like one an html element rendered in which was that that page view page component? And then from there I would go and just build the page in view you and it didn't really take long for me to realize that was kind of silly because I had all these into intermediary blade views views that literally did nothing more than just render this view template or yeah this view page component. So that's really what got me thinking. Well maybe there's kind of like a better way of doing this. So that the point of our last discussion. That's where I was at each one of these pages I actually think in in that article. I might have come up with a system where I actually rendered Actually basically created a single view blade view which would render out whatever component passwords. Actually in. Yeah so yeah so that sorry. I'm trying to remember how far I got in that at that stage age so and by what I was doing there is it was still essentially. Every single page load was a full service side. Page load And then I was what I was doing to Kinda give it even a bit more of like the SPCA feel So to avoid the full page loads was using turbo links and turbo links. If you're not familiar with it it's basically Away it's a way within your application to kind of like convert classic server side rendered application creation until like an SPCA and what it does. Basically hijacks click events like link click events and loads the next page. Whatever the pager can go oh too low to using Ajax and just does Does actually like some dom manipulation to replace Whatever the new pages or whatever the existing pages with the new page and it kind of handles all the the history state and whatever else Accordingly and that was cool it felt good it was because now I essentially had an SPA. But I was using kind of classic server side routing and controllers and all that but the the problem with that approach was that turbo links was really not designed for that turbo links was really designed for when you build applications that are fully server side rendered at this point I essentially had an application that was fully client side rendered. I just happened to be curbing it as a more classic basic services up with separate endpoints So it really was kind of like the wrong tool for the job because what ended up happening is turbo links. Just the way a works on every single page load it would completely destroy the current instance of view which are meant which meant on every single page visit. That view had to reboot so to speak and re initialized. And that created a flicker which I wasn't happy with it's amazing the lengths that all go to you as a web developer to avoid a page flicker it really earliest anyway. So that's I'm like how can I get away from this. Page flicker saw aw. I hacked around with her links and kind of the setup for quite a while and then I thought to myself you know what maybe the problem is. I shouldn't be returning. HTML on the subsequent page loads. And that's really when I had like this brainwave idea like well. What if on subsequent page low so the initial so page load it would obviously be an html kind of that that whole standard set up but on subsequent page loads when you click a link instead of returning a full html response? What if it only returned the data in needed for the next page which would be returned as Jason that somehow client side it would know how to replace the current page component with whatever the new page component own? It is right and then pass it whatever necessary props data that page component needs so. That's there's lots of detail in there but we that's a really kind of how how I got to this idea of inertia J s because at that point by doing it that way I could maintain the current view. Instance and in view has this feature I forget what it's called but I think it's it's called dynamic components where you can dynamically switch a component to some other component and And that's really kind of the the the the key feature that inertia uses to kind of make all this possible and that's a that's a feature available and other client side frameworks like Like react in Felton. Yeah well those. Those are the two that I know of that support. That yeah awesome. Yeah so that's a it's a pretty interesting approach for sure I think I think it's probably worth like talking about in a little bit more detail. The exact like song and dance. That actually happens because I think that'll help people understand exactly what you're trying to do. So I'll kind of explain. I guess like the way I understand. Did you tell me what I got right. And what's wrong the way that I understand. It is like so so kind of like your approach reason before inertia the very first response that you get from like your larval ob is basically the same that you would get with their previous approach. You make a request to the server some html all comes back in that html. There's like a a tag somewhere with like an APP. Id or something something that says like hey view. This is where you're going to mount onto and you have some data attributes on there that kind of says this is the compage component that you should be loading and like this is the props for for that. Should we passed into that page. And that's all stuff that comes from the server so in your controllers. You're basically instead of returning a traditional blade you you're you're basically returning a little data instruction that says this is the component. This is the props on. That should be used so you get that. HTML back Inertia his job at this point is Israeli. Just like sort of parsing out the information from your html like those data attributes and stuff and telling view like hey render this component and render it with these props so then view takes over boots up mount itself to that route element. renders the component there and stuff but then subsequent navigation is work. It's really

Apple spends ~$10,000 fixing a MacBook with screen brightness set too low

"Spent an estimated ten thousand dollars. Trying three Pero macbook pro and fix incredibly simple and well for various reasons, the show, the limitation of Apple's latest MAC book designs, here we go. Now, when photographer Greg, Ben started having issues with his neck book, pro heeded, what most people would brought it to apple for repairs. The issue Benz macbook pro display, wouldn't turn on and remain dark, no matter what he did not even apple could figure it out. Ben's went two weeks without his work machine will apple twice replace the computer's logic board aboard that campaign contains machines important shifts as well. Some cable replacements, eventually, apple decided to just replace the macbook pro with a fresh unit. Similarly valued at seven thousand dollars. Fortunately, for Ben's his original laptop was under warranty. So he didn't have to pay a dime, but he estimates that if he did have the foot, the Bill it cost him about ten grand. Which well drags about the same trying to replace the max logic board, clearly would really stunk if it was out of warranty. But finally, after all, that drama in apple genius shown a flashlight at the screen of his original problematic unit, and found the real answer to the problem. Are you ready for it? The computer's display brightness was turned all the way down. I know I like what I read this article I said, I had to share it. I had to share it. In the last time, he had turned off his computer, the brightness la- set to its lowest setting as he had his macbook pro connected to external monitors. Oh, well the root cause of this MAC book pro issue, which involved, several expensive repairs at really didn't actually fix anything is absurdly basic, if you take a step back, it's not entirely Benzes Felton. It's not entirely apple technicians either, so whose fault is it? It would appear to that Ben face a perfect storm of glitches at led him as well as apple to think his macbook pro was defective or broken screened in light up when he turned on his monitor the keyboard didn't light up his external monitor. Didn't turn on. It's normally does the screen's brightness was responding to brightness controls on his external keyboard, and he tried some indepth troubleshooting, that many if not most MAC users have never heard of like recent systems p ram in case you're wondering, and perhaps the most important glitch to touch bar, Benzes macbook, pro the that touch screen above the keyboard failed to show up when he turned onto his display which prevented him from raising the screen. Means brightness, but raises a larger question about the macbook pro speaking business insider Benz suggested at the entire repaired tobacco could have been avoided had his max out seven thousand dollar twenty eighteen macbook pro with a touch bar came with an old fashioned physical, brightness button, instead of the touch sensitive strip touch bar that replaces them on its highest end models and laptop come with that I absolutely would have tried that option. The problem that Benz faces at the touch bar on his macbook pro which would have offered the option to turn up the brightness wouldn't turn on until after he logged in, in with the screen out of commission. He did not even know the machine was on the log in screen waiting for him to log in. It gets better. A fully operational MAC book pro should have splayed touch bar, where you'd normally find the screen brightness controls return on a macbook pro with touch part, your office touch showed up complete with brightness control. Never problem here. But it is possible that recent updates to MAC OS operating system changed how the touch bar works in his blog post bend says that the issue may have had something to do with specialized software that he uses for his work like a screen calibration tool. Meaning that most MAC book pro uses are unlikely to run into the same issue. But one of Ben's friends even tried and failed to duplicate one of the issues in hindsight, after finally knowing the root cause of the issue, we might I'll ask why Ben's didn't try logging into computer by typing his path password, even if the screen was black, but everything is so much clear in hindsight, Benz, laptop experiencing glitches at simply refuse to let him control is screen's brightness vengeance. Experienced serves as good feedback trap leno's reminder that physical button. Amd replace business insider, contacted apple for comment on Benzes experienced, but did not hear back. So. This is great for you guys if you happen to have a problem down the road with your MAC book, pro and you're listening to this right now. Log this information away in your noggin for a later date. But if you happen experienced that problem try typing in your password hinting hitting enter, and it might just load everything else up. You can change your screen brightness or deliberately by MAC book pro that has physical, brightness and controls as a button on your laptop. So. Problem solved, but oh my goodness of stupidity goes around with a guy.

Matt Barnes: trade rumors are a 'monster'

"Forget the trade rumors of crate monster. Okay. You're on a team or this happened. You guys got off a plane. No, we had a crazy situation when I was with the clippers. I wanna say it was two thousand fourteen and we were flying to Memphis. The day of the trade deadline won't say we sat on the runway for over two and a half hours while we're on Twitter at the time Antoine. Jamison got traded Byron Mullins got. So these guys are getting off the plane on LAX runway because they had been traded in the final trae that was supposed to go down with myself and Darren collison for Iman Shumpert in Raymond Felton. So we're sitting there just uncomfortable. Awkward the whole plane of silent. Everyone's kind on their phones. Like bumping each. I like, oh, David Thuan. Just got traded. Molly got traded. Oh, damn. They're talking about you. And you and call us in our. Are gonna get traded to the Knicks. So for people to say that, you know, they're professionals you just need to wait until you're in that situation. You never know how you're gonna react. And I want to say I was probably twenty nine or thirty at the time maybe a little bit older. And it still shook me, you know, what I mean? So these kids are in their early twenties playing for the Lakers playing with LeBron. So it's hard to really say, you're should be a pro and that shouldn't affect you. Because it's not true. Matt who were you upset with owner team player? Coach who will dock was everything at the time. You know, that's back when doc was GM. Right. President and head coach you know, what I mean? So it's a tough situation than after the fact doctrine pulled aside once we got Memphis and explain the situation, I wasn't buying it. You know what I mean? Like, you take it personal as a player you said because it's more than just you leaving and putting on a different uniform. I have kids I have a family. I got to go to a city auto possibly want to go to. So a lot plays into that. I mean who would want to go from L A to New Orleans, you know, with all due respect. But just who would you know what I mean? So a lot really comes into that. So like I said they're going to have to deal with this for a while. In hopefully, he can get these guys back on the same page and believing because him and his agent and magic really shook the cage. And now you've got a bunch of young guys kind of not really sure of
