"Against a player like quarter, I think, yeah, he was because he's a guy who's comfortable with coming in and I think when you're that far back, it's just such an obvious kind of strategy to go to. And you have so much time, like corda had so much time on the ball because Medvedev was so far back and that for me, I'd love to see a change up for him in that match because he essentially just said, right, Seb, if you can hit the ball pass me more than you can't. The more than I can retrieve it, then you'll win the match. And that's kind of just what happened, you know? I mean, just on Medvedev, he has dropped out of the rankings out of the top ten rankings. But it's weird. I still don't really see him. His tennis for me is still top ten tennis. It might not necessarily be at the level it was at, you know, when you got to an Australian open final last year, won the U.S. open against Novak Djokovic. But I still didn't think he's like, I still don't see him outside the top ten and maybe that makes him going to be dangerous. In master's events where his seeding is going to be a bit trickier than what it was, as I said, a few years ago. Yeah, I think it will be a bit different for him. And I think it's one where I'm sure he'll be back up top ten top 5 this season, maybe even after the golden swing. But I mean, when you see some of his results, it's so clear that he is a cut above the 20 to ten in the rankings. He can dismiss players like he had great wins ended last season when he won the Vienna title beating cinema, making Santa look pretty average and ordinary. He had some good results. In Kazakhstan as well. Catching off dispatched him and Adelaide this year, straight sets and obviously catching over is now having a great run here. So I think it's the case that he will be right back up there and being a contender, but it's just something isn't quite matching up and I guess it's one where you have to kind of drop down a little bit sometimes and I think playing the 500 in Vienna in kind of winning a 500 was actually probably more important for him than if he had made the final of a Paris, for example because you have to get that winners mentality back. So I mean, I'm not concerned. I don't think you are, I think it's just a blip. It's just going through the, yeah, I feel like it's just sort of going through the motions at the moment. I mean, we also had wins for Yannick sinner, Hubert hurt cashew, who lost today. He defeated Denis Shapovalov in 5 sets. But one player also through and now is in the quarterfinals year, the hetch Curt. Now he beat cam nori in round three, 6 four in the 5th set. I was a little bit disappointed because I thought there was a little bit of an opening here for nori who has been playing some very, very good tennis and I thought this is a bit annoying, but seeing also come through today in four against Felix auger aliya seem. I mean, again, similarly, I think to Ben Shelton, la heche is another player who is still in charge of his own destiny at the Australian open is certainly one of the younger players who is having a bit of a breakout moment down in Melbourne. Yeah, and I think we probably should have taken a bit more notes, shouldn't we? With the result when he took out taking him more seriously, I think so. Because that was quite the statement victory. And we were probably a little bit harsh on norrie in that sense because that was obviously a 5 set match and now he's packed up with a win over Felix, but it does kind of lament the point that we talked about with the styles of breakpoint and the next gen is that if you miss your window to win a slam, then this next gen are going to really make it hard for you. And what's scary is slacker was in the next gen finals at the end of last season. He's now already doing this. It's not taken. Well, it obviously the time will tell in terms of if this was a single moment or whether he can kind of keep it up consistently across the season. But the way it's gone from that transition and now he's in a quarterfinal. It's scary, but it's also very, very impressive. So impressive and I think it's a case that players like Felix ojal is seeing they have to look at some of these results that they have. And think about the fact that the player going into the end of season finals, well at one point we thought he was really kind of the outside outside best bet for that one and this was the Grand Slam that came after all that great run of form that he had. So it is a bit disappointing for him. But I think as we've said, the young guys, I don't think that this sort of middle tier of men's tennis are at all intimidating to them. I think that if you're able to, as you say, kind of take control of the way that you play, if you have a good strong serve, these great retrieval skills. And a pretty big game. I mean, we've seen it with corda. He's never gone that far in grand slams. He hasn't had that much practice or match play. Coming into this and obviously these guys are able to put together some of the best results of their career. So I think wouldn't it be crazy, should be one much at a time, but if someone like would be able to go all the way. That would be truly break out victory. Especially when stefanos sisa pass is in your half of the draw because for me, he's looked I mean, he came through against Greek spawn in straight sets and it's just been very, very easy, comfortable for him. Very, very serene. So yeah, I think maybe should get too ahead of ourselves. I mean, looking at the women's side, we had two very notable high profile matches we had Victoria Azarenka former Australian open champion against Madison keys. And we also had Daniel Collins versus ribena Wimbledon champion. So Daniel Collins lost out to Rebecca and Madison keys lost out to Victoria Azarenka. Chris, in terms of both those matches, were you surprised with the victors or did you did you sort of see it coming from the off? That's always a tough one. Especially with Azarenka. I feel because honestly, the score I just shows it like, they are just both, I feel just such, I think keys even more actually. It's just such a hot and cold competitor on her day.

"To go to Medvedev's press conference tonight because obviously it finished late and we had a car to get into and a podcast to record. But I am interested to try and ask me at some point this tournament about whether he actually ever felt like he got over that Australian open final and whether actually being back in Melbourne is some sort of closure on that. It seemed like today just helped him, I think, just being back on that court, playing well, having a different experience. I think that might do Medvedev the world of good, because as you said, it doesn't feel like he's been as mentally strong since that final. There's been a lot of other potential factors too, injury, being banned from playing Wimbledon, but it all sort of started here in Melbourne and I wonder if he's going to sort of come full circle on that. This fortnight. I did very much enjoy his post match interview in which he was praising geron to the tilt, saying he's such a good player, but also admitted that two sets in, he was already thinking about the on court interview and wondering whether it was going to be Jim Courier speaking to him. He knew he was winning that match, even though giron is apparently this fantastic player. It was just sort of classic sweet spot, great Medvedev. Yeah, it may be look forward to attending future Medvedev press conferences at this at this tournament because he didn't come in for pretty much media and he finished two done late tonight. We haven't spoken to Danielle Medvedev yet, and that is one of the joys of the Australian open. I think. Who else impressed today on the men's side? We had a real thriller from an unexpected thriller from Francis tiafoe against the German Daniel altmaier. He looked to be cruising in his what people seem to have decided was a sort of romper suit. He looked like mister motivator. It's a wild set of colors, isn't it that Nike have put the players in? And he didn't go for the sort of half hearted effort. He went for the full on version with the sleeveless. They also showed him the T-shirt and shorts, and he said, you've got another thing, anything wackier than that. And the thing that looks a bit more like a baby's onesie and they said, Francis, we've got just the thing. And he pulled it off. I thought he looked fantastic. I don't think he pulled it off. I think he pulled it off better than anybody else could, but I do think it was criminally criminally bad outfit. But good luck to him. Respect him, going for it. I just don't personally like it. We'll have to take this back. 7 6 in the fall. For Francis Diaz, having led two sets to love, one to get through is how you described that. Yes. And I think he said something along the lines of, you know, that sort of cliche, but it's true. You can't win the tournament in the first round, but you can lose it. He's got bigger ambitions in these tournaments, and I think he used to have the U.S. open has made him realize that he can go really far, I think, in these events. And that was awkward because I was looking up at the screen and for about an hour there, altmaier was heading Dominic team, Stan Wawrinka, single handed back cam style winners. He was brilliant for a large portion of that match and tiafoe had to resist all that and get through it. And yeah, I think it's pretty impressive. I love that TF is finding a way to be dialed in and hungry and motivated and dedicated and still be bringing the vibe. Still be bringing all the vibey Hi-Fi at the end. It's so brilliant. Yeah. It was great. He was great. He's great for the tournament, great for tennis. Felix auger theme was having one of those days for a while. I was preparing a very different agenda item. The bloat was right now. Against vasek pospisil and what was an injured, there was nothing else going on. He was just bad. And it got to the point this match where it was either going to be a hideous, horrible loss. Or exactly the kind of win that Felix Australia seemed needs. It's so interesting, because it turned out to be the latter. When I walked into the media room and saw him out for the first time in about 9 hours. I looked at the screen and I said, what is he doing here, Matt, you know? In broaden this match, I think he was two sets to one up, and he was still close. And that wasn't having any of it. This is just what he needs, though, right? This is him showing he can win ugly, right? Well, that's what we've been saying, isn't it? We need those, you know, sort of 5, 6 out of ten performances. And look, he did get better after that first set. So I think it probably was a 5 or 6 out of no, he couldn't 5 or 6 out of ten performance and he won it. And I do remember he played rusev Ori here. Last year, and I think he lost the set 6 love in that. And I went out, I think it was on the 1573 arena. I went out what is going on with all the aliasing and I remember sitting down and I think the first shot I saw of that match he framed it and the ball came right at me in the crowd and I thought, oh my God, he's awful. But he got through that match and by the end of that tournament, he played one of the best matches I've ever seen him play against daniil Medvedev, where he lived with Medvedev for 5 sets, had a match point. And I just think he needs he needs to come through max's like this because he didn't at the U.S. open against Jack Draper he didn't against maxime Crecy at Wimbledon early rounds which are tricky and he's not playing his best.

"Newsletter for free in our podcast show notes right now. I don't know why anybody wouldn't have not signed up for that, but if you haven't sort it out. That's where you'll find all the details. David, how are you doing? I'm all right, yeah, I am all right. And he and George is a dog, by the way. And a very lovely Doug. I've seen the pictures of, so I must forward those to you because there really worth having a look at. What is he? Okay. What type of dog? Now you're pushing me into territory. I'm uncomfortable in. So a nice one, a fluffy one. Lovely. A nice fluffy one. Yeah, great. Hundred and 50 podcasts. It's quite a lot. Today is the day David not only that we record our 19th podcast in November so far. But he's also the day that Canada won the Davis Cup for the very first time in their history. Now folks, David is going to spend the remainder of this episode, pretending to be really pleased for Canada, but I'm here to tell you that he has spent most of the afternoon trolling Canada on our WhatsApp and a little bit on the Internet because David's beloved Croatia beat Canada at football today. And David wasn't very magnanimous about it. I mean, I was pleased for them in the Davis Cup. I didn't mind who weren't that to be honest. And I really enjoyed the scenes that we had, but yes, I have Croatian skin in the game, so I was very much enjoying that. Sort of turn of events. You're very much not happy with the Canadian football manager. No, no, because he said something pretty derogatory and disrespectful in the direction of Croatia pre match. And they stuffed four goals down his throat. So there we are. One all we'll call actually. Well, maybe that's what the, I don't think they can do it. That doesn't need you to cast dispersions on that URL, stop that thought where I started it. But Canada were fired up by something today, David, weren't they, too, and didn't go to the doubles, which is a shame for the neutral. I desperately wanted that final to go to the doubles as you said last night. The previous four times all had gone to the doubles and that had been that had been great for the competition, I think, but although Canada were very much the favorites on paper going into this one, I was quite surprised by how one sided it was quite frankly it was a bit of a route by Canada over Australia. The far superior team, two fantastic singles performances from Denis Shapovalov beating for Nazi Okinawa and Felix auger seen beating Alex domino both in straight set, both frankly, very comfortably. Now, we'll be reacting to all of that very soon. But first, before everybody tunes out, David and goes, oh, another show without Matt, not going to bother. We've got some map for you, folks. He's still not feeling great, but he is improving. He's going to be flying home tomorrow and he felt well enough today after the final to send us and you lovely listeners a voice note. So here is Matt reflecting on the final and the week as a whole. Hello, everyone. Matt here, sorry I've not been on the podcast in the last few days. I was, I was in the thick of the action here in malaga. I was really enjoying it, and then I got flu. So I had to spend the next few days in my hotel room. Probably probably karma for spending too much time on the podcast talking about my ocean view and walking around town in my shorts, but anyway, thanks to everyone who sent well wishes my way. I'll try to keep the short before I have a coughing fit or need to blow my nose or anything, but I just wanted to contribute a little something extra before I leave here. I've quite literally just finished watching the final between Canada and Australia. The highlights are still playing on my screen. And as always, I'm just struck by the huge amount of emotion on display at the end of these tyres, both both from the winning team and the losing team. It's always just a very emotional experience, one of the end of these ties. Well, I suppose it's a familiar feeling having just reached the final of the Billie Jean King cup as well and comes so close to winning that event. I think it was the first time that Australia had reached the final of both the Davis Cup and the Billie Jean King cup in the same year, since 1993. So an extraordinary effort from both those sides and both of them really contributed so much to each event. They both understand the rich history of the event. They're both so desperate to win it. And I enjoyed watching their teams and their efforts so much. I said about the Billie Jean King cup Australia team. I don't know how much better that team can get. It really feels like they're maximizing, whereas this Davis Cup team, well, there is a player who would add some quality if you were to throw them in. That's obviously Nick curious. But if you did that, do you lose some of what's made them so great. That spirit that putting aside of ego that all being on the same page and fighting for the same cause. I don't know, maybe curiosity is capable of all that, but that's a conundrum for next year. They were all play the Davis Cup finals next year. And the finals will be we'll be better for it because Australia always always bring a lot to this competition and yeah, just shout out to deminer and Thompson and hear it who've all been really, really great this week. Canada, well, congratulations, Canada. I was in I was in Madrid in 2019 when Canada reached there first, Davis Cup final.

"Had been played out or discussed earlier on in the day. I don't know. Certainly around that three hour match, I think that look, as they were saying, they've said all along, we're really lucky we have two players who can play doubles with postpartum. And I think he probably must have got told that, look, Dennis might not make this, you know, he's struggling a bit. And I think definitely once I think Felix, he was burst and out of the seams to play. He could just tell. He was saying, look, I had the sort of singles match. He said in his post match press conference, I had the sort of singles match that you really want. Everything went according to plan. It was quick. It was efficient. Straightforward. So I was ready to play doubles, you know? And I also get the feeling that he just wants this responsibility a bit like dim and all last night. There's a moment with these guys. I think we've seen it from Fritz as well. That's when you feel like they've elevated themselves. Shapovalov has he did very well to win that point for them the other day. But I've never got the feeling that he's reached the level that those three have reached. Even deminer, who I don't know who's had the higher rank in other shape of our vending law, but there's the way they're just they seem up for put in the country on their back and just saying, come with me, I'll take care of this. I feel like that's something that's always in our yearlong predictions. Who will finish higher in the yearend rankings and a sharper valor? And I grow in every time. We'll come back to that. So I think I always raised one eyebrow at Felix auger Elia seems name on the doubles team sheet. Definitely more than one eyebrow David at Matteo bertini. On the Italian team sheet in place of Simone belleli now, we know with hindsight now that that was due to injury of Simone belleli and that it was foreshadowed a little bit they were prepared for this scenario, but he had been hitting a little bit in practice, didn't felt a way off playing singles, but was sort of vaguely primed to come in in the doubles. And I know it's something that you brought up as a possibility yesterday on the pod, but I really dismissed that in my mind, I thought that was pie in the sky. The possibility of that. I really was surprised to see his name. Yeah, and the interesting thing is that when I initially heard it, I mean, first of all, I saw Colin tweet, it looks like it's going to be this. I didn't even read the name of barattini because I was so focused on the confirmation in his lineup that Felix was playing. And I didn't even bother to read the second two names because I thought it was Berlin for Nene. And I thought once it was baritone, I thought that this was just a mind games move by Philippe and Andre, that they were going to say, okay, I'll see your Felix sociality, but I'll raise you, Mateo bertini. Yeah, I did clench teeth emoji. Mentally at it. But you know, as it turns out, I mean, I think it's actually, it's really, really impressive from baritone that he stepped up and he felt okay to play and he had a right good go, but you could see the difference in sharpness between even if he wasn't injured anymore. It's the difference in sharpness between himself and all the other three players on the court. He tried hard, but and I do think increasingly having watched quite a lot of doubles this week in Davis Cup on the TV and watched a lot up close in real life last week in Turin, had a lot of doubles exposure in the last couple of weeks. Sharpness is everything in doubles. I mean, of course, you know, you've got the quick reactions, isn't it? I remember can't remember who it was on Prime Video, but what are the pundits telling me about the drills that the Bryan brothers used to do, which sounded death defined, but you basically just stand right on the net while someone is trying to body shot you constant constantly. You know, it's all about those sharp fast twitch reactions, isn't it? I think sharpness is everything and that's what I noticed didn't seem to be there with nasty cock and Arcus last week. For example, in certainly wasn't there with Nick curios in the opening match and it sort of came as the week went on and as the adrenaline built up, but it wasn't just there on demand. And I don't think it was there with Jack sock the other day because he hasn't been playing match doubles, hasn't played it since the laver cup a few weeks ago. And how could it possibly have been there for Mateo bertini today? Of course logically, it wouldn't be. He did well, really. To even, I mean, they made it close, it was 7.675. But they always felt like they were hanging on. I felt that you were waiting for fanini maybe to conjure something. And he did a couple of times and they got themselves a breakup. But they couldn't hold on to it. There was a moment where they let one go over their shoulders, just not quite communicating right, and it looped in and so credit to him. I think the fact that he came on this journey and was in the crowd and was so there's a wonderful screenshot I got of Sonny goes victory and bertine is in the melee afterwards and it was magical really. He is only 26 years old and I feel like I've seen more images of him experiencing intense misery

"I think he had a really positive reaction in that he kind of laughed it off rather than directing his anger towards himself. It was like a sort of growth moment. And I was really encouraged to see that. I agree that still there were, you know, his habits were there throughout the week. He's not changed, but I do think he wants to change, and I do think he's trying to change. And if he can, I think it will really help him because yeah, he was quite loose in that final. And I realized that a lot of the time I watched Rublev when he's not the best player on the court, you know? I very often watch Rublev against kind of his rivals, you know, in the top ten. And in those matches, Rublev can sometimes look a little bit limited because he maybe doesn't have that extra gear or he doesn't have the variety in his game necessarily. But in this one, when he's expected to win, I just saw how good he is, just week in week out his how good his base level is and why I think everyone else on the ATP tour seems to kind of be in awe of his game, don't they? They all talk about how good his forehand is and how cleanly he hits the ball and he was awesome in this final very few areas, lots of winners and yeah, he just gave corda very little chance if called a wasn't going to produce some magic and he didn't and yeah, so I think it's rube's fourth title of the season and yeah, as you said, the sort of the progression for him is doing this in grand Sam called a finals or a master series, but it's confirming who he is and he's got a great shot at being at the ATP finals. Again, I think for the third year in a row. Yeah, so it was a very grown-up performance from Andrea blob in that final. A couple of wins in Andy Murray, big one over Alejandro de vivid for keener in the opening round straight set 7 5 6 two and then your classic Andy Murray epic 7 6 in the third over Pedro cachin in the second round before losing out to 6 one in the third. So better than where he was at the start of the season where he was routinely losing in second rounds. He's withdrawn from Antwerp this week, the European opening Antwerp of course, the tournament he won gosh would it have been three years ago now that extraordinary win over Stan Wawrinka in the final, his first tournament win is only tournament win since the hip troubles started to manifest themselves most severely in 2017. He says, we know that the withdrawal from Antwerp is the non medical reasons. Yeah, basically. I asked his manager this morning actually and he said he was never really intending to play four back to back weeks if he did well in them. And to have got to a quarterfinal. Is a decent return and he's got basil and Paris coming up and I think he's just got to manage the load really on his body. In order to play them all and those were a couple of three setters in there and it must be quite testing and I was quite encouraged for him really. I think he would have been very frustrated with having won a comfortable second set against corridor and then really just letting core to get away with it. Quarter played very well in that deciding set, but I think that would have frustrated him. But there was some encouragement there, I thought, for Murray. Yeah, agreed, great Intel David. Thank you very much for your Intel gathering. Over in frenzy. Felix auger eliasi won his second career title, he's well and truly broken that finals duck, hasn't he? He beat JJ Wolfe 6 four 6 four in the final David points for you if you can tell me what the JJ stands for. John Jeffrey. I've been watching JJ over the course of the last week. Matt gave me this quiz yesterday, and I said, Jeffrey John and I've been kicking myself for the last 22 hours. It is Jeffrey John. Oh. I said the same as David. Yes. Oh, I'm all, let's see. Oh no. I messed it up. Well, so did I, David, we messed it up in the same way. I thought he was quite good actually this last week, because I was somebody says his name, aside from getting it wrong, I tend to think of mullet and a bit of a showman, really, who's more interested in making people go wow than actually winning tennis points. And I think there is some truth to that. But goodness me packaged it all well this last week, I saw him beat Alexander bublik, I saw him win a couple of the matches that he got through. And I think that's his first ACB final. He was really, really good. And you know, I like the fact that he's just, he still hasn't changed though in terms of his approach, he still sticking his chest out and walking around like he owns the place. And I just like watching him. Matt, I think it's quite a big deal for Felix au Julia seemed to want to another final improve that that previous duck breaking wasn't an aberration in this is a new trend that he's on now and that's that that past trend of losing in finals and really frankly dropping the ball. In finals, maybe even on occasion laying eggs is well and truly behind him now. That feels quite big. Yeah, I think so because on the one hand, you could look at this as just the title that he should have won. You know, he was probably the best player in the draw and certainly heavily favored in the final. But as you

"My impression is the role that Russia played in ryback in her getting to the final in the loosest sense possible is we did back her and give her any funding to a point that she was like, well, I'm off to Kazakhstan because they're going to offer me lots more support. But no, I think in all seriousness and I think she's, I think I was reading an interview she's a bit sick and tired of all these kind of questions being raised about her. You know, her heritage. Yes, it is a talking point. It's going to continue to be a talking point. Kim, they're talking point though for me that is the most interesting though, is her record in finals. It's not very good. She's lost, I believe, her last four finals. So I think there's going to be big question marks in terms of being able to play her game on the biggest stage of all and yes, it will be a battle against another first time finalist in jabar, but she is a player who I don't think has any of that nervous energy that maybe right back in her and Nick kyrgios share. So for me, that is the more the bigger talking point particularly in regards to the match. Coming up, how does she block that block all those finals and ending up as the runner up out of her mind and go into that match firmly believing that I've got a chance of becoming a Grand Slam champion? Yeah, I think she's only one two WTA titles, but has certainly been in something about like 8 finals. So a bit of a Felix auger seems situation kind of. In the sense of not the great wrestling. Proof he wrong Elena, go on. But yeah, she will be playing on the final because anja Borg came through against Tatiana Maria. In three sets, it was 6 two three 6 6 one. So obviously, you know, these two are very, very good friends. They know each other very well. And it was an entertaining match for a bit, but ultimately on came out very, very strong finish to the match. And we didn't really look back at the start of that 5th set. 5th set, third set, I should say. Although Tatiana Maria, she's battled through her last few matches, you know, she's very much a used to playing a long three set match. So you did think when it went to that third or was she going to come back again? But yeah, it's not this time. No, exactly. And I think what was interesting was that, yes, we all know about her kind of variety, particularly has kind of sliced game, but I noticed watching on TV, the slice, the slice backhand, I mean, it was just kind of used exclusively by Tatiana Maria. She doesn't really have a double handed backhand. Whereas you're bore does possess that, that slice that can, but she can also hit flat on the double hander and I felt just attacked by just by attacking that backhand wing of Maria. A lot of the shots that were coming back were very floaty, very kind of in the middle of the court. There to be hit. And that is when I felt your ball could turn to her double handed backhand to really assert her authority on the point. And I think that was one of the reasons, particularly in that first set, why she almost kind of overpowered, I think, Maria to kind of begin with. Yes, Maria did kind of fight back in that second set. And you will win a little bit off the boil, but it just sort of proved, I think, to be a momentary blip. And she really kind of ran away with it in that third set. And you Kim, you just can't not be helped be happier I feel for visual because she's such a crowd pleaser. Everyone seems to love her. She, I think has won the most matches on the WTA Tour aggregated over the last two seasons. She's informed at the moment and she's just she's just a crowd please. I just don't feel like unlike Nick curios and Novak Djokovic in the men's final. I just don't feel like she has any detractors at the moment. Yeah, and I mean, she hasn't lost a match since that first round defeat at Roland Garros. She won Birmingham. She's very comfortable in this surface. She's playing great. She's very likeable. She's made a lot of inroads of late over the last few seasons. Going back, she's at her highest ranking now. She's number two in the world. Now her grandson finally, you know, she's making history for her country. You know, she's the first Tunisian and first African woman to get to a slam final first Arab player to do that as well. So all these milestones and you know, she's sort of talked at length about how she'd love to have more people from Africa from the Middle East to get playing tennis to get to these situations. I mean, obviously Joel, you're massive malachi fan. So perhaps he'll be inspired by sizable run and he'll be the next one. Well, it's fascinating you say that because do you remember when Lee nar got to a grand Sam final the first time and TV viewing figures went completely off the charts in China and tennis I felt was really elevated in that country ever since and it feels like this is again is one of those opportunities where we've kind of not just kind of Tunisia, but as you said, Middle East, Africa, really kind of putting tennis on the map in a part of the world that has had past players who have done well and have plied their trade on the top level both on the ATP. And W, WTA tours. But I'd be really interesting to see that the TV viewing figures for this match given it feels like it could be a historic occasion for someone like angel if she was going to go on and win the title. I mean, it will be a historic occasion for both players and whoever wins because they're both going for the first Grand Slam, but they're also the first play from their countries or representing their countries to win, they would be the first player to win a slam title as well. So regardless, we're going to have a first. And they have played, I think, a couple of times before they've got a Winnie, but they haven't played since last year in Dubai where one so I've kind of feel when I'm looking ahead to tomorrow's final, I think it could be a close match, but ultimately the one thing that gives me not gives me the edge but gives you all the edge. I should say is I think her variety.

"To round up before we finish for today Joel Felix auger aliasing managed to come through in a 5 set struggle to finally get his first ever win at Roland Garros. So that was good. He went two sets down to some Peruvian guy who I've never heard of very yes. Yeah, that was a straight installed. Very strange start. Yeah. But yeah, he came through in the end, not pretty tennis, but there we go. He got the job done. Carlos alcaraz threw in routine fashion over londero. And Sasha is there also through against oftener straight sets. Actually, interestingly, I think zverev is going to be playing Sebastian Baez next, which I think will be quite an intriguing encounter. I'm intrigued to see what buyers will do against zverev. Maybe it will go long, could go 5. And Djokovic also has molcan who, again, we talked about the fact that Marion Vader is who was Djokovic's coach is in molcan corner. So that adds a tasty dynamic, I think, to that match, mulk has been playing some very good tennis of late as well. So I think that could be quite a tricky encounter for Djokovic on multiple fronts. But let's move on Kim to collect a set. We are going to unveil our collect a set picks. Some of our eagle eyed listeners will have noticed. There was a ghost collector set pick announced in our predictions episode, apologies, total shambles, I may have mentioned Daria cassi keener, which Kim instantly called me out on and were like, hang on. The picks you put on social media are different to the ones you announced on the pod. But we don't think anyone has followed what I've said as usual on the pod. So I think we're in a good place. They just ignore you anyway, Joel. Yeah, apologies, listeners for that. It's like confusion. I know what I listened back. I wasn't able to join for the last one. I was like, hang on a minute. But yeah, who have you gone for, Joe? I'm really shocked at your really shocked, but well, I am shocked. I could say the same about yours too. Met the dev semifinal. Where is that come from? You've got a Djokovic quarterfinal. Do you think rapper's going to beat him? Absolutely. I think Rafa is going to beat Djokovic. So I've got Djokovic going out in the quarterfinals. I think the red carpet has been well and truly laid out for stefanos to pass to get to the final. He's playing great tennis. He got their last year. I think he's going to match it. So I've got sister Sebastian to the final. Medvedev, you have gone semifinal. I've not gone that far. I've gotten round three and for some reason I think he might lose to kept manovich. I think cat manovich on clay quite difficult. I know Medvedev came through very easily today, but there's certainly stern a test to come and yeah, I've got Medvedev get out in round three. Jabor awkwardly has gone out already in round one. I put in the semifinals with actually to be fair, quite a few of our listeners. But dosa, who I had meant to say instead of chassis keener, I've also got reaching the semifinals and I'm feeling a little bit confident about given how routine her match today was against Fiona pharaoh. And then Bianca andreescu, I've got going to round four. I think she will lose to saccharin. She gave me a little bit of another of our little bit of a heart attack here in her first round match because she lost that opening set. It very much looked like she was going to lose it in two sets, but was able to kind of gut it out in three. So I'm still on for that one, but yeah, those are what I'm going with. Yeah, I think, I mean, I feel even more embarrassed in the final. So I'm just like, what? But yeah, like you said, a lot of our participants have, you know, we all have egg on our face for that one. For bido, so I've gone for the third round. I feel like cute metaphor is going to upset her. But after seeing bodos of thrash fear in a Ferro today, I'm a bit like, oh, okay. I didn't, I don't think that's a prediction. On rescue, I've got round two. I think she's going to lose to bench tomorrow. U.S. open semifinal rematch. Oh yes, I suppose it is. How things have changed. And Djokovic, I've gone to win, I think he's now got his groove, he's back where he needs to be and Rafa's foot is bothering me, hence I was bothering you more than me. It's bothering rapha more than anyone, but unfortunately, yeah, I don't know, I just, I think Novak's back and back to business. It sits past I've got also in the final, I think we're going to have a repeat of last year. And Medvedev, yeah, I did look at kick manovich in the draw and I was like, oh, that could be a bogey skin. But a bogey's get a banana skin even. I just invented new phrase. Love it. But I thought, you know, when I've doubted him before, he's generally actually gone as per the seeding. So I'm going to stick with that. And we'll see how it goes. Well, we'll do an update halfway through as we always do. I think you're completely deluded for semifinal. But we'll see. Well, let's see. I peaked at the Australian open where I think I got four or 5 right and four, I think. And I obviously just going to have my worst showing yet in this tournament. But prediction wise, I think you and Chris made predictions on the last pod. So I'll throw in my two pence worth. I'm probably, yeah, as I said, Djokovic to win beatings its fast and the final for the women I've gone for film tech as well. I think now that I did have jabbal but now that she's gone I'm going Zachary for the final. So semifinals Djokovic alcaraz sits fast Medvedev. And then shrimp take kazaki and sakurai take them. Like men. Well, yeah, but maybe I wouldn't have said her, but now like seeds have fallen. I'm like, oh yeah, she's still going. And also stop a bank has just lost the first set against Chloe pake, a French French player. So she could be another seed falling by the wayside, perhaps as well, but we'll give her a bit of time to see what she can do. But yeah, we'll be back on Thursday to round up the second round. We've got some great matches coming up tomorrow and sits past Mercedes on now actually. But tomorrow, Rafa's rappers the night session, which is good, so I can watch him, but yeah, in the daytime, I think Ben chics on dress gear is the match to look out for, I think, really, from the Philip chateau perspective. Kerb has also playing first up. She had a really tough win against magdalena frech. Yesterday, she saved match points to come through like 7 5 in the third and she must be tired because she played a lot of tennis last week and like a day off, that's it and then you sort of back out in action. So yeah, we've got also radar Carnegie back on court. Against sassanids, now that's a toffee. Do you think Emma's gonna they played each other on the clay? Earlier on and ratty Carney started really, really well. I thought sassy was going to retire. I can't remember which tool of that was, but sazerac came roaring back and one in three, which was very frustrating. I do think Brad Carney can come through that, but she knows based on, I think, their match earlier on in the clay season that she's going to have a game on her hands. I'm also Kim looking at sebi korda, Richard Gasquet, last match on Suzanne longleng, that feels to me like it could go 5 sets..

"Showdown, and Daniel Medvedev loses his number one ranking. Kim, today is the 17th of March and we are here to take a look back on all the actions so far in Indian Wells at passing shot headquarters. We are in the midst of tennis Paradise. We are getting into the business end of the tournament, but Kim, before we get into that, very exciting day at passing shot headquarters. It's our 250th episode. I know, I can't believe we've made it this far Joel. To be honest, no. Quarter of a quarter of a thousand. What's that quarter of a millennium? I don't know what the relevant material or metal is to celebrate a 250th anniversary. Maybe like stardust or something. Maybe it should be like yellow yellow tennis felt on the tennis ball, that's the I think that should be the material of choice, but yes, it's been amazing. I mean, this is, I wonder how many of our lists have been here from the very start, but you're all incredible. Thanks for being with us on this journey. 250 episodes amazing stuff. I'm looking forward to Kim. We are getting closer and closer to a point where you could have an episode for every day of the year from passing short headquarters. And as a die hard fan as a host, you know, that is that's the moment we all want to achieve, right? When we can have one episode per day in our lives for a whole year. Well, that could be a new daily meditation practice. Go out, listen to the podcast. And also a nice flashback over tennis since 2018 when we began. If you sort of trying to S.W.A.T. up for mastermind or something and that's your special subject and it's 2018. That would be fantastic way to swap up. But who's going to do that? I doubt I doubt anyone will, but it might be interesting. See how far we've come. But yeah, thanks to everyone for listening and following us on this journey. We are so happy to have you with us. As we make it to two 50 beyond, et cetera and to mark this special episode. We're doing, yeah, like a summer in mid week summary of Indian Wells. A lot has happened, I think, over the last week, on tour. Outing the Californian desert and I mean, we're recording this as the two quarter finals and the women's side of the draw in the bottom side of the drawer I should say are getting underway and we've got a rapper against Nick kyrgios later. So a whole evening of great tennis ahead of us, but we're going to catch up on what we've seen already out in Indian Wells. Yeah, and let's start with the men's action because Kim, this bedside, the bedside of the draw, it's just been full of shocks, I feel, since day one really, you know, we've had Daniel Medvedev go out. We've had Stefano scissor passco out. We've had Alexander zverev go out. Felix auger the seam has gone out all the big seeds have gone out earlier than in particular I was expecting and, you know, let's look at the top half of the draw, the story of the top half, we know our quarterfinalists, we've got Rafa Nadal and Nick curios who are on a bit later, this evening, and we've also got cam norrie and Carlos alcaraz in this top path. But let's talk about someone who's not going to be there. And that is the world number one. Or should I say the former world number one? Daniel Medvedev. I mean, I guess he's still world number one at the moment, but Daniel Medvedev won't be there. He was upset by gel Monfils. Great match, three sets, Monfils was absolutely on it, tearing, tearing through forehands, being entertainer with some side spin under arm serves. It was, yeah, really, really great to see, but yeah, not so great, I think if you're a Daniel Medvedev fan and there was always I think a suspicion that going into this tournament, the conditions, the slow conditions and the types of opponents he got with his draw, particularly with some like a Monfils, who is a very, you know, we know him as a very speedy agile character of the cross the court. It wasn't going to be the greatest matchup for him. No, it wasn't going to be the easiest matchup. You know, Monfils has been in good form. This this year he got to the quarterfinals of the Australian open and had that narrow loss, didn't he at the AO and could have gone further to be honest with you. He's been he's been doing well since coming back. And Medvedev, you know, there's a lot of pressure on him as the world number one. This is his first tournament that he's played as the world number one, which just changes things, doesn't it? When you've got all that hype around you, not to mention what's going on back home in your, well, not in Russia, but what your home country is doing elsewhere in the world and all of the kind of controversy surrounding that. That's probably going to be playing on his mind as well. And he really just lost it. You know, he does what he, what he usually does and self combusting and matches smashing his rackets. I think he pulverized one all over the court and I think Monfils just took advantage of that as well. Like Medvedev had really lost the plot by that third set and Monfils was, yeah, on it. It was great to see. It was really strong performance from on face. Yeah, it was really, really impressive. I mean, this is a guy, you know, similar to dall, he's getting into the, I feel like the tail end of his career. He's 35 years old, but at the same time, he's played some of the best tennis. So, you know, I've seen him play on the tennis court this season, and he always, I think he always, I think he is known as an entertainer, and I think the drawback is as you get older, I think, is that you could get looked at by tennis fans as a bit of a nostalgia player in terms of someone who I think takes to the tennis court is a bit of a throwback and you live in the kind of live in the past and I think a lot of people might see Gael Monfils as a player like that in terms of, yeah, I've heard about his former glories from back in the day and I'll go see him, but you know, I think this match particularly against Medvedev was a reminder that he is a player for the present and you know he's probably taking great inspiration from someone like Nadal who's doing again incredible things at a similar age and again these plays are.

"Listening to this podcast, you are fans of tennis will know that tennis never stops. So in the two weeks that we've been away, lots and lots of tennis has happened. We did have a listener question special last week for Friends of the tennis podcast and we will also have a Juan Martin Del Potro special for Friends of the tennis podcast this week. So if you want to be like Mary in Melbourne and become a friend of the tennis podcast or buy yourself an intro, then you can do that. The link is in our show notes. We will, of course, be talking about how Martina napo in this podcast as well. But we are first going to deal with title winners this week in the events that have been happening in St. Petersburg and in Rotterdam where we've had titles for a net conservate and Felix auger Ali aman Melbourne has never felt so far away Matt as when you're watching St. Petersburg and Rotterdam because they feel so wintry and cold and indoors. I know they're indoor events, but they feel ultra indoor somehow. It's almost sort of a spike out of spite to the Australian open in all its bright sunshine. We're going to make this as dark and as cold as possible. To remind you that you're back in winter. It's such a contrast, isn't it? It's very February, very tennis in February. I must say, if you did want something totally different and unexpected, watch Buenos Aires this week, I was not ready for clay in sunshine in February as well. That was that played tricks on your mind as well. You know, you're going from watching Rotterdam in the cold indoor to Buenos Aires outdoors on the cloud. It is a weird time of the year, February for tennis and none of it quite fits together or knits together, but I must say we had a week of really incredible storylines, I think, actually. Yeah, we did. I mean, look, the biggest of those is Felix auger seem finally winning his first title. This story David was on the BBC Radio news this morning the sports news, which I found quite interesting his Felix or Jerry sim okay, he had that run at Wimbledon last year, but not sure where to place him in terms of cutthroat, you know, he's not, he's obviously not won a major, not reached a final. Him winning his first title, and I think part of it had to do with the really strong emotional audio clip interview clip that accompanied it, which we'll talk about in a minute, but you know, I could imagine the editor on that sports desk going this guy's definitely somebody that people need to know about for the future. So him winning his first title is newsworthy, but I was interested to hear it. Yeah, I'm really happy to hear that. And it is encouraging, I think. And I think it does show how a human interest story of somebody who's looking at I know he's only young, but when you've got that record of zero 8 in finals and 16 sets played 16 sets lost. That is a thing, and that is something that is remarked upon in its going to be, and he, because he just thrust that aside, some emphatically over the last week backing up what felt like a breakthrough in its own right at the Australian open and in other weeks. And then you saw what it meant to him that he wasn't trying to hide it that he wasn't trying to just brush it off for his teamwork. They weren't saying this as a foregone conclusion that this is going to happen and you've got him on his phone with his dad straight after all these things. These are the things that make people care about you and I think it's very difficult to watch Felix Australia seem and not be moved by him as an individual and by extension as a tennis player. I mean, I watched all of his matches in Rotterdam this week, and I didn't watch that many other players. I was really focused on him. He felt like the story all the way through. That is a really interesting comment, David, because during the Australian open, I did find it a bit difficult to care about him. Until that, until that match with doing Medvedev, which was obviously sensational and dramatic and extremely interesting in lots of ways. I had found him. A bit impenetrable and a little bit corporate. I was losing interest in him just a little bit and he is completely pulled it back for me this week, particularly with that final, we'll talk about the finally beat Stephan or sit to pass. He destroyed Stefano sits about actually in that final. It was a bit of a demolition job. It's about standing there in the gray lighting of the Rotterdam center court looking extremely pale with his tiny little plate, he looked a bit shell shocked, actually did stefanos it's a pass. And Felix got a plate. His first title. It was all it was all very plate. It was here's your little plate. Here's your medium sized plate for Felix. But I loved that he let us in. On how much it meant and how difficult those 8 consecutive final losses had been and that as you say, David the 16th consecutive sets lost the not having even played well, really. In any of those sets, he said, he said you wouldn't believe the sleepless nights. I've had. Wow. That was the clip that they played on 5 live. This morning. Yeah, it was an incredible clip. He's been, he's been a bit defensive, I think, and about, you know, the failure to win a title thing and just generally a bit recently since the narrative is developed about you're not quite pushing on in the way that we all overhyped you to do a few years ago. He's just got a little bit defensive with the media. And I get it, but I was just starting to find it a bit impenetrable, but I just love how he's led us in and revealed what he said it feels like the most enormous weight has been lifted from my shoulders and I do just wonder what Felix auger and I are seeing, we're going to see now, because we've already seen a different one. Something is changed in him to win that title in the way that he's done. But what now? What will that unleash in him and for him? Yeah, he does feel like unleashed and unlocked. And I think even in this final, before he'd done it, to me, it felt like he was different. I thought he was going to win this final. He was playing so well. I think like David, I've been watching all of his matches through Rotterdam. And I think looking back, I agree, Catherine, there was a sort of slight defensiveness over the way he was questioned about his record. And I think he was sort of questioning why he was being questioned a little bit. And now I see those answers as an indication that actually here belief that it would come and his mindset had changed and something has happened in the last 8 months for me where he has he's more confident and there were no real nerves in the big matches we've seen him play recently. You know, I think back to the baptista agu match with the ATP cup on the line and he was brilliant in there. He was absolutely fantastic, and we said, it's not a first title, but it might help get the first title because it was him doing it for Canada. He was flawless. Then at the Australian open, there were nerves in his first few matches. I went out to watch him again through savory. He had a terrible second set, lost at 6 love..

"Actually, in some ways. Yeah, he's actually. Maybe it's because he's playing on the same day as Medvedev, perhaps, and I don't know. My attention kind of goes to Medvedev. I think lots of people would probably feel the same. He described his win as a lot of fighting and a little bit of swearing, which I thought was quite a good summary. He was frustrated. He said it took him a time quite a bit of time to work out buyers, someone had never played before. Quite a tricky game. I think I asked him straight up. How was your elbow? And he said, fine. He said, honestly, I've not troubled me to Sydney. It is fine, and he didn't need any treatment, or anything like that. So it's a good sign. Because that's my biggest worry about sits a pass. You know, I do think other than that, the game, the game can be there. So then it sort of feels like. I've dropped a clanger then is what you're saying by not having him in my quarterfinals. I haven't got him in there. We've only worked with the information in front of you. I sort of, I had him losing to Taylor Fritz in round four, which is a much still on course to happen for it to beat TFA today in three sets, which is a big win little wobble from any double faulted serving match point serving for the match, but then he wrapped it up in the third set tiebreak. So they're on a little collision course. That TFA for it to match. I think it was, we didn't get to see that much of it three very competitive sets. I think, for those three, I mean, so striking the difference in physique between those two. One of them has been playing a lot of golf. And the other one's been playing less golf. I would say, but yeah, Taylor Fritz looking good. And I don't know. I don't know what I was thinking. Anyway, we're all thinking vaguely the same thing. So Fritz now faces Roberto Bautista, a goo and sits a pass faces Benoit pair. Who's unexpectedly doing a thing, he's having a run, he's beaten Grigor Dimitrov, he's got this extraordinary head to head, I think, with Gregor Dimitrov has and he's beaten in four times. So who knows? Maybe it's just one of these quirky head to heads, or maybe Benoit paire is ready to finally fulfill his talent anyone want to speculate about whether that's the case is he going to pass? Happy to take it in its own isolation, that particular match. Not to try to read anything into it whatsoever. Understood David understood. Pablo andujar, the movement killer. He has reached round three at the Australian open for the first time aged 35. And I think that deserves a little bit of a round of applause. And he faces Alex domino next. So he's got the chance to do some more movement killing. The first time Alex de menor had won a match on the rod laver arena today, which was a big moment for you. That was the only person that showed up for his press conference. Really? Great, Aussie hope, I know. Wow, that does surprise me. Yeah. How did that conversation go, Matt? This is where I say, find out in the newsletter. But it was very nice. It was very nice. Yes. Sign up then. We didn't plan that folks. Last match, I think that we want to mention is Felix auger LS theme against Alejandro davidovich for kina on the care arena my goodness me this was grueling. I mean, Matt and I went out to watch a short portion of it and that was grueling enough. Went out for a second stint. And that sounded grueling, and then the match seemed to go on for another 7 hours after that. And it was only four sets. Goodness knows what would have happened if Alejandro davidovich for managed to take it into a 5th, which could have happened four tiebreak sets. It was, wasn't it? Marathon marathon stuff. And I know Felix is an extraordinary physical specimen, but he has had serious court time to get to this point. Yeah, and played right in the heat of the day. It was hot today at Melbourne park and this was in the baking sun for four plus hours. Yeah, I found it interesting. I remember we commented on Aussie against battista goo at ATP cup and how good was your earliest scene looked, and how secure he looks. He wasn't making the same errors that he often makes. And I really thought maybe that playing someone with that rhythm helped him. But he's played two players here who give him rhythm. Rusev Rory, and davidovich for kina, their baseline that he's had rhythm. And yet, I've watched quite a lot of him. And he is spraying the ball. You do not know what is coming off of his racket. It's either a sweet connection with a perfect pop, and it looks brilliant. It's sort of mesmerizing. Or it's a shank and it's going ten feet long. And it's a real mix at the moment. And I do think perhaps though the video makes for keener and Rousey, both have firepower. And I think he's been wary of that. And I think he's been trying to pull the trigger a little bit, perhaps when he shouldn't be. Very different style of his next match against Dan Evans, who didn't have to play today. After render kanesh withdrew with a wrist injury. So couldn't be more contrasting circumstances for those two Felix about 8 hours court time into matches Dan Evans very fresh, having had a day off. Sometimes that doesn't help. You know, sometimes that can actually hurt a player. So that's an interesting third round, but gosh, Felix has had to have to battle through and his celebration afterwards was as big as you see from Phoenix also alias seem. He was buzzing to have won that today. He really was. Felix augere seeming in Stan Evans is a match that I can definitely get excited about. That'll be in a couple of days time. The schedule for tomorrow is tasty. It's very tasty indeed, David. There is a lot of this that you're not going to be allowed to watch because it's happening in the middle of the night. And if I see you tweeting at 3 o'clock in the morning again, there is not going to be a podcast tomorrow. Those are the rules. I don't need to start a burner account or something. Yeah. I mean, close your ears for this scheduled David because you're not allowed to watch any of it until the night session, okay? As a ranker against fitter first up on rod laver arena. We'll let you know the result in the podcast, David. Critique of our Panko. Thanks. And then in likely sensational match that you're not allowed to watch news, David, and watch some of this. Alcaraz against bertini. Look. Oh, I'm watching that. If it goes long, you can watch the end, okay? Can you make the others go longer?.

His mechanics are little off, so we'll talk to the next couple of days. But it's Flying it open, dropping his own flawed dropped a lot today, so we'll go back to the next couple of days.
