"Kim Chris today is the 17th of May and we are here to catch up on the week in tennis at tennis weekly headquarters. We are reaching the business end of the roadmasters. The weather has got in the way, but we are all back at tennis weekly headquarters to wrap up what has gone on so far and we have had a lot of shocks, a lot of controversy and hate. Novak Djokovic or Rafael del are not going to be in the final, which is the first time in a very, very, very long time. So yeah, there's going to be a lot for us to get our teeth into as usual. And excitingly, Kim, you are back from back from Eurovision back from Liverpool and into the tennis weekly hot seat. I know. What could be better than coming back of my nice week dancing away in Liverpool, watching all the Eurovision acts coming back to you guys to talk about techniques. You weren't at the main event or the main draw in my ridiculous analogy from last week, but you're in like the qualifying of the qualifying, you saw some lucky losers, did you? What did you get to see? Well, sort of. I did enjoy your qualifying analogy when I listened to your episode last week. But yeah, I wasn't at the Wimbledon final. I was kind of at the roehampton qualified. Down the road. Essentially, I did get to see everyone play. So not do very well, which is a bit like this week on the tour. Exactly. There are so many parallels between Eurovision and, well, British tennis, maybe. It's now gone full circle. We're coming back to the tennis world. Chris has already, I see negan on the Brits. But I mean, it's to be fair. I mean, we are just about to record an Andy Murray has already lost to Stan Wawrinka in what was it in the Bordeaux challenger? Indeed, yes, unfortunately. That's a pretty bad result for him. Three in love, which is actually not what our listeners predicted on social media. So we were all wrong on that one. And that's a bit of a shock. But these challenges are in quite nice locations, Provence now Bordeaux. I mean, that sounds like summer holiday cake. Because dream just going around France and joining himself. Maybe throw in some vineyards while while you're there. Yeah. Judy Murray didn't have to make the trip so she must be gutted. She didn't get to go to Bordeaux this week. Well, I don't know if Andy will be having some wine in Bordeaux but it was his birthday a few days ago and talking of birthday and cake, Chris, you sort of, well, you sent round a tweet that Andy Murray had put out the other day in reference to the cake gate that happened in Madrid. If you could just explain what went down on Twitter the other day. Well, as the tennis weekly Kate correspondent, I can give an update this week. It is an important role. The one I take very seriously. Andy Murray threw his input into the cake gate situation. He said that he wanted a bigger cake, if not if not equal to alcaraz, or he would be furious. Which obviously he is joking. If anyone follows him on Twitter, he is very dry and very sarcastic. But this did not stop this from getting a lot of attention for the wrong reasons. And actually inspired a certain tournament director who was in the really in the hot seat last week. He still isn't. He's still is because then he tweeted, hope I can arrange something. And then after just one hour, he realized the area of his ways and deleted it. So clearly Feliciano has not learned his lesson there. And I think now maybe should folks are trying to get a wild card for queens. Was this like the Feliciano Lopez goodwill positive PR and he was trying to do something nice or was he just not thinking or I don't know because this was just like keep digging your hole even deeper? I think he a bit like Kanye West needs someone else to run his Twitter for him or to have the password and then maybe give it back to him when he's no longer running the Madrid tournament. I think that would make the most sense. But maybe Andy Murray on the cake side of things he did kind of bring this one back into the ring. So hopefully next week I will not be giving you a cake update. Yeah, I think Lopez should just stay out of this now. I mean, why make it any worse? But I mean, to be honest, if I was Andy Murray, I wouldn't have tweeted that either, I think it's maybe slightly insensitive to joke about it, seeing as a lot of people found it very upsetting. But I mean, I want to know what kind of cake it is as well as it coffee walnut is a victorious bun. What cake are they all imagining when they're talking about it? But yeah, all this talk of cake is making me want to go out and fetch some from the supermarket. But Joel, what was your highlight of the last week? Let's move on from Kate. My highlight was in real life.

"Is the 8th of May and we are here to catch up of the week in tennis at tennis weekly headquarters. The Madrid open has come and gone arena sabalenka and Carlos Al carrez are your champions. The Italian open in Rome is just about to get underway on Wednesday and there is much to discuss at tennis weekly headquarters. We've got Andy Murray winning a challenger tour title, the first time in over 17 years, we're going to be talking about Emma radar as well and her Instagram post about surgery. And we're also going to be chatting a bit more about the challenger circuit and looking at the role it plays on the tour because it feels like it is the talk of the town at the moment. So we've got all that to look forward to. Rome as well. We have waited to make sure both the draws are out so we can give our predictions because they're obviously a 100% foolproof. But yeah, Chris, how are you? Kim is not here. As listeners might know, it's Eurovision week this week, so surprise wise she is in Liverpool having a great time. So it's again, it's just us at the helm. Wow, yeah, Kim, is it your vision? She's there before Eurovision's even on it. I know rehearsal. For meet your vision was just like one night on a Saturday night, but apparently there's like semifinals, qualifiers, qualifiers, qualifies, it's funny. I think it's a bit like Alex paints like a tennis tournament, Joel. You have to enter the qualifying to make it to the main draw. Is there a lucky loser? I think there's a lucky loser in the maid of all the way to the final. It could happen. We've seen it happen this week, haven't we? Yes, I mean, a lucky loser making it all the way to the final at the Madrid open. It's certainly been a memorable tournament for some of the good reasons, but it's also been remote memorable, I feel for some of the bad reasons, which we're going to get into, but before we do kind of discuss that, we're going to talk about our highlights of the week from last week and I'm going to go first because my favorite my favorite part that I saw was on Judy Murray's Instagram account and Andy Murray out playing a challenger in France, mom, Judy, obviously wants to be there, looking for a flight and she finds one. Ryanair 1499, I'm having some of that from press wick in Scotland to Marseille. I feel like we can all appreciate a cheap flight. Yeah, I hope you are. I think with Judy, I think I looked at the flight to see if it was a real flight. It was she was having us on. She's also not paid for by Ryanair, but I do think what is particularly interesting is that she was able to fly and make it there in time for the match because the flight landed at 1215. So we do it was meant to be and then she jested back that evening. So little trip to see Andy pick up a challenger title. So we love to see that. And Chris, what was your what was your highlight? Because obviously my head as a Murray fan was in France, but I believe yours was in Spain. Yes, mine was in Spain. And something that I thought was quite jolly at the time, and then it all became a little bit sinister. So when I was watching, I think it was the semifinal match. And then I saw a lot of hooha happen as this giant cake was wheeled out for Carlos sacras birthday. And I thought this is lovely, a lovely cake. So it's all good. And then I saw on Twitter that it was also sabal Anki's birthday on the 5th of May, but her cake was much smaller. And this then became the Twitter storm to end all Twitter storms because it became symbolic of something much greater than just cake. It became symbolic of the disparity between the two different tours in terms of pay in terms of treatment between the WTA and the ATP because Savannah's cake was a lot smaller. In the defense of the cake, I do think that Carlos was large enough to feed the entire stadium. It was for everyone who was there. It might be a party bag, take a piece. We're a Saba link, it didn't have a match that day. But then the Twitter storm happened. And tournament director, which we normally think is one of those wonderful roles where you wonder about, you know, you shake a few hands, have a nice time. But he kind of went into this debate. And said he was surprised by this reaction after this gesture. Carlos had just won a match to reach the final. Two, he was playing on center court and three, the tournament's paid in Spain, even though it's an international event. And then he tweeted a picture of holga runa who got his cake on the 29th, which was even smaller than sabal anchors. So three cakes and one disastrous tweet because I do think it does call into question a couple of things. But also he did tweet that in response to Azarenka who said it couldn't be more accurate of the treatment. So I think he missed the point that this is much more to do with the fact that it's not even between the tools rather that they're criticizing the cakes that were given, which is obviously a nice gesture. But I mean, where do you stand on Kate gate John? I mean, this feels like it got well out of proportion. But at the same time, is certainly a very visual metaphor, I feel of the inequalities at the moment on the ATP and WTA tours. We've fully seen that in Madrid. This week, the tournament director Feliciano Lopez, yes, I think he's had a very he's had a very tough time of it. And I do genuinely think, just on the topic of tournament directors, I've noticed a trend and I fully get this that former players much heralded players, Grand Slam winners, Emily Murray, at the French Open, get put into these roles. And I feel like they're there for to add a bit of pizazz and some high profile credibility and fame to the organization of a tournament, but I think also you've got to remember that this is a job and there are serious things at stake here and if things go wrong, I dunno, is a tennis player who hasn't been in advent organization until like 6 months ago, for example, is that necessarily the best person for the role. Could you maybe should they be in more ambassadorial role as a role rather than a role maybe that has more of an impact? Because certainly the Madrid open this week has been, yeah, there has been a few controversies, Kate gate for one of them, but Chris, the two others I want to talk about are, well, first of all, is the ladies doubles final ceremony. When I say ceremony, not much of a ceremony really happened, we had Jesse pegula, coco gough, Victoria Azarenka, and Beatrice had admire, played a great match, collected, collected their trophies, and that was it. They were given no platform to speak and again, similar to Kate gate, this caused a massive storm on Twitter. I mean, where do you stand on this situation? Because this is certainly the first time I've ever heard of a final happening, a ceremony happening, but a ceremony without the chance for the players to thank the crowds. So thank each other and to thank their teams. It did happen once previously this year. I've been informed. It did happen in the Middle East. I think that was in a tournament in Abu Dhabi. But I think what's very shocking about this is that it's clear from player responses that they weren't given the chance to speak. It definitely was the case that they were made aware that they wouldn't be. This is not normal, as you say, and all of them wanted to thank well, they want to thank everybody on the pool kids, the tournament officials, the sponsors, everyone who made the event happen, but it seems like because of a couple of hiccups that they've had, which I'd say that tweet from glitz on Lopez is more than a hiccup.

"Is the one who's not allowed to speak in the doubles final. It feels like those two events are connected. And of course, it's an awful move by the tournament because all they are doing is reinforcing Azarenka's point by sort of gagging her and not allowing her to have her say. So deeply deeply troubling, I think. There was also in terms of adding to that Tapestry of potential explanation in the women's singles final the day before eager schwinn tech in her speech had had a pop at being scheduled to play one of her matches at 1 o'clock in the morning as is not hugely uncommon in Madrid. She perhaps wasn't the best moment for her to say that in terms of sore loser, it was a salty comment at the time, but you know, she absolutely has a point on scheduling. I don't think tennis players should be having to play tennis at 1 o'clock in the morning. And obviously that doesn't only happen to women. It happens a lot to everybody in Madrid, but in this case it happened to eager fun tech and she feels she wanted to make the point that she feels that it impacted her chances in the final. So you had this image from the day before of Feliciano Lopez there and the rest of the tournament officials looking pretty sour faced, Walsh von tech is there with the microphone in her hand using that moment to express her displeasure at some of the treatment from the tournament. And look, it's not about the cake. This tournament has work to do to prove that it values women. So much work to do. The men's singles final featured models as ball girls. I don't know why they were wearing basketball shorts for that match. If that was an attempt to respond to some of the criticism about having model ball goals and having them wearing what they've been wearing all week, it was a feeble response and utterly feeble and pretty irrelevant response. This tournament, I know it is under different ownership now. It's now owned by IMG and this was something that happened under the previous ownership of the on teriyaki, but as recently as 2018, the tournament director then tournament director John Terry tried to sue the WTA in order to not pay equal prize money. He was unsuccessful, and he is no longer involved in the tournament, but that is recent history. That is in the DNA of the tournament. You know, the scheduling of the women's final last year that was 12 months ago. You know, the cake does tell a story. This tournament needs to be proving to female players that it values women and gagging them is appalling, is absolutely appalling, and for anybody thinking, oh, what does it matter all they would do is thank the ball kids in the officials, thank their teams and say, say, well done to the other team, they played really well. First of all, it's, I just think it's an important pillar of tennis. Sometimes TV people behind the scenes get quite frustrated about the fact that double ceremonies can go on for a long time because both members of the team are allowed to speak and there's not really any time limits on how long they speak for and I do understand that sometimes when you're on a schedule for TV can be frustrating, but I really think it's an important staple it's an important principle that all four of them should get to speak. That's something you earn especially if the men are doing the same. But just as a matter of principle, generally, I think it's important. And I also think it sort of justifies it so brutal that the people that lose the final have to stay on court. For the ceremony of the person that beat them, the team that beat them, it's a slight sort of mitigation for that, isn't it? That you get to speak and thank you to you. It's also important for sponsors. You know, all of those four players will have had would have had sponsors to whom, you know, them being able to stand there and give a speech and thank their sponsors and thank the tournament sponsors. All of that stuff matters. It's a tradition in tennis for a reason. And it was just an appalling move and I hope desperately that they regret it and it was just an in the moment miss calculation but come out and say that come out and say that and you know and state some intent to rectify this for the future and acknowledgment of the tournament's history and that this feeling among WTA players exists. I have contacted the WTA and asked for comments. I've yet to receive a response on that. I have also messaged Feliciano Lopez, who is somebody I knew from the years in which he was competing at the sharp end of the queen's tournament. And I haven't had a response from him at this point. I mean, that was only earlier today. I accept that this is the day after the tournament has concluded, and they're very heavy weeks, but I haven't had a response yet. And I should also add that he is the figurehead of a big operation there in exactly where his role begins and ends is difficult for us from the outside to decipher as to whether he is involved in scheduling whether he's involved in or heavily involved in a decision like whether the players have a say on following a ceremony or not, but he certainly knows what the protocol is because he's won enough trophies and very much enjoyed taking the mic whenever he has. So yeah, I do think an explanation is required and required as quickly as possible as soon as we hear one. We'll bring it to you. Away from Rome, Andy Murray has got to win at a tennis tournament. It was a challenger level at that extraordinary level challenge tournament in Exxon Provence in France. And he beat Tommy Paul in three sets. I watched it whilst walking around cheltenham on a day off. With the family, I just sort of switched on for the final set and to see the final scenes. And it, I mean, they do run the most fantastic tournaments in France. A pretty much every level, and this was ramped with people really close into the court where the galleries of fans and Murray's there with his mom and I think that little might have been there in his agent and they're all close to the court and you can see how much it meant to Andy Murray. I gotta be honest, I really wasn't expecting him to win that tournament given what we'd seen on him from play on clay so far this season I even thought he might pull the cord on the clay court season and not bother with Rome and Paris the way things were going.

"And then once the presentation ceremony starts, I then kind of throw to that and say, we'll now get the chance to hear from both sets of finalists and our arrangement with both tours is that the winners also, once they've received their trophies, they then meander over and do a live interview with us on prime in our presentation position in the corner of the court, which is amazing. It's a brilliant position. It looks really cool. We've had some great interviews all week and one of the best actually was with hash and oven Rublev, the day before. It was a real good vibe zone when they came over after winning the men's doubles title. So I threw to the presentation ceremony just as coco gough and Jessica bagula were being announced onto the stage. And I said, we'll have Azarenka and her dad Maya come and talk to us here. But we'll also now get the chance to hear from coco Goff and Jessica bagula. And we didn't. They walked up to the stage where Feliciano Lopez and various other tournament officials are there. They received their trophies, their run is up trophies. And then they're told that they look confused, they're obviously waiting to be handed the microphones as is normal, customary, as was on the on the script. And they're not. What happens then is Victoria's Rancho and Beatrice had admirer called up to receive their winners trophies. They too, then look confused. Aren't given any microphones. They are ushered. The four of them onto the stage, the podium together to have very brief rotate photos taken all four of them during which time there's quite a lot of chit chat between them. And then there I should, of course. And that's that. And they don't come over to us for an interview as anchor and haddad Meyer. They look in a desperate hurry to get off court. And none of us had any idea. What was going on? So just to be clear that we didn't know whether this was the players not wanting to speak or something else was pressing, but I mean, this is several hours before the men's singles fans about to take place that was plenty of time. It's not like the tournament was rushed or anything like that. So the players depart the court and within a few minutes and there's a lot of chatter as to where are the women and why are they not giving speeches? And shortly after this final takes place, coca gough tweets wasn't given the chance to speak after the final today. But thank you to the fans for supporting us and women's tennis this week thanks to Jessica peculiar for always keeping it fun on the court and hitting unreal clutch shots. Lastly, big congratulations Vika and beer also thanks to my team and Jess's team, of course, also for the ball kids tournament staff and everyone else who works hard behind the scenes, Twitter format doesn't allow me to say everything I would have said during the speech if we had one, but I just wanted to say, I'm thankful. Victoria Azarenka then tweeted hard to explain to Leo, Leo's her young son, that mommy isn't able to say hello to him at the trophy ceremony. That was then retweeted or rather the cocoa goth tweet was retweeted by on stripper who said so unfortunate that you were not given a chance to address the crowd and your opponents. This is sad and unacceptable. So from what we're hearing, Catherine, this is not the players decided they don't want to talk. This is them not being given the chance. To talk. By the tournament, in the same way the men were, after the final. Correct. What's going on? Correct. And the tournament despite requests from every angle to give an explanation for what happened the tournament have not given any such explanation either on the record or off the record, nothing they've remained completely silent of it which leave silent on it, which leaves us only to speculate, I find that incredibly disappointing from them, you know, they've been given the opportunity to try and explain what looks like. An appalling and completely misjudged decision in their not even respecting the situation enough to try and explain it. They're just hoping it goes away, which is feeble. I think, look, the background to this story is, I can't believe I need to say this cake gate. Oh, Matt, do you want to do cake gate? Sure. I mean, I feel like Kate gave is going to come up in Madrid every year because Carlos alcaraz and arena Sara Lincoln celebrate their birthdays during Madrid. They're both the 5th of May and actually we had it a couple of years ago where sabalenka didn't get a cake and out craze did. And look, it's cake, I think everyone at the time sort of thought, oh, that's a bit weird, but maybe didn't think too much of it also. This year, alcaraz gets an enormous cake. I mean, absolutely enormous several tiers encore ceremony. He bites into it. It's a whole thing. You know, it's all front and center. Look at Carlos auker as his cake. Sabalenka who I don't think was playing that day got some kind of cake behind the scenes and it was much smaller and a Twitter user slayer Fritz. Great name. But on Twitter, a side by side and saying the difference in cake size is astounding. And it was a picture of our careers with his huge cake and sabalenka with her smaller cake. And that was quote retweeted by Victoria Azarenka saying couldn't be more accurate on the treatment. So that's a pretty serious tweet, actually, from Azarenka there. And I think reading between the lines, the idea is it's not about the cake, it's about what the cake represents, which saying it out loud sounds. Sounds stupid, but I think the feeling is that the women feel that they are treated as second rates in Madrid. Examples, such as getting a smaller cake and some scheduling issues, remember last year, the women's final was between the men's single semifinals. You know, it felt very much like it was, it was second rate, second class, and I think this is probably been building for a few years, this general feeling that the women are not getting the same treatment as the men by the tournament. And as Catherine said, with no explanation at all from the tournament we are left to speculate and assume what the reason is for why they weren't allowed to speak and it feels like too big of a coincidence that Azarenka was the one who sent that tweet and then is the one who's not allowed to speak in the doubles final. It feels like those two events are connected. And of course, it's an awful move by the tournament because

"Can be in tennis. I mean, he won a deciding set tiebreak in qualifying. To get into the draw and then has won four tie breaks in the main draw to keep that run going. You know, he's just he's just played really well when it mattered and he does have a fun game. It was a good matchup with Medvedev contrast of styles and I think it's probably the sort of game that will cause players problems because they just don't see it that often at a slice backhand loves coming forward to the net, big forehand, big serve yeah, he's got he's got a lot of tools and it's been really fun to sort of see him work them out and yeah he's been one of the best best stories of this tournament. The ATP media notes described him as a sensation which I'm afraid we do have to point out is incorrect usage because sensations can only be Australian. We all know that. No disrespect, Chris, but you are unfortunately not a sensation. We're still we're still working on our word for the American player, aren't we? I think we've got musketeer to run on Garros. Plucky Brit at Wimbledon and we're still we're still trying to work out what a Christopher Eubanks style American player is, but I'm afraid it can't be a sensation. So if you want to make any suggestions, folks, you're welcome to do so. And if you want to know the origins of Australian sensations and any other phrase or reference point that you hear on this show, we will link to tennis podcast terminology in as shown, which is page on our website that we are growing by the day with lots and lots of different references. One thing that you've just described Christopher Eubanks is game. And I've said that he's been down in the challenges for years. And I still don't think that gives an answer properly as to why. Why is he not made it to this point? I mean, is there anything that you can see or of red or have heard? About his game, or his mental approach, or whatever it might be that has stopped him to this point. Tough question. No, I suppose the only thing is that it's not a conventional game, is it these days? So it sort of makes me think that he will cause players problems, as I said, if he can get in front of them. But it's a grind down on it's hard work, isn't it? It is. That's the main thing. And look, I mean, I think he, I think he is erratic. He looks like an erratic player. Exactly. I enjoyed watching him. And against Medvedev isura had an opportunity to show what he'd got. A bit like we were talking about. It's a different level entirely, but we were talking about how Medvedev gave our craz this perfect length ball is consistent. Pace to do what he wanted with and show how good he is and with Eubanks, he got chance to go through his whole playbook, some of them hit some of the myths, the crowd loved it, he lost in straight sets 7 5 in the second. Put up a great showing. But you know, as you said, a grind is the word for challenges. I don't, I don't know whether we've properly get across on this show. How hard it is to make it, how hot because the challenger circuit comes with so few points, so you might get a couple of what you regard as really good wins. You just don't get rewarded for them, particularly you don't get many points that send you shooting up the rankings. If you get into qualifying, for a Grand Slam, you might win two great matches. There might be the two best match wins of your life. You might be on the cusp of a third, and then you lose, and you don't make the main draw. And you don't get that massive ranking boost. So, you know, you've got to be you've got to be able to find a way to repeat this stuff and keep on winning, and what he's done here is he's qualified. He's got through the qualifying rounds and he's won several rounds in the main draw at a level that you just get so many points for. They put him inside the top hundred. That gets him entrance into other big tournaments, other 1000s, other grand slams, and then he only needs to win a couple of matches at each one of them, and he maintains his ranking. This is kind of the conundrum that these players face when they're trying to break in and I think that whilst his agents have done right by him by getting him wild cards and all those sort of things over the years. It's really hard to get a wildcard into a tournament at this level, hit the ground running and win matches. Whereas he's gone into qualifying this time when he had two previous wild cards for Miami, he didn't get anywhere with them. Okay, he was a lot younger. This time, he's gone through qualifying. He's nearly lost, but he's managed to find a way through, gets into the first round of the main draw. And he's got matches already under his belt. So he's got a benefit to having gone through at the hard way. And I think often players do benefit more from qualifying than they do while cards, but there is no magic formula. There's no secret other than keep trying. And persevering and he's a model of that. Yeah. Absolutely. And yeah, as you said, I just think he does have to sort of game where it's going to have some real highs and it's great for him and it's all come together in this big event like this where he gets a big ranking push, et cetera and it's not like he came into this event with any form. I mean, he lost to Feliciano Lopez in Acapulco a few weeks ago who was sort of barely a player these days. I mean, obviously it has a lot of quality, but you know, I think he lost in the first round of a challenge just before that as well. You know, it wasn't like he was knocking on the door to do this. And yet it's all just absolutely broken for him this week and it's amazing that tennis can do that. And yeah, he's a reminder that we get every now and again of the quality that does exist. You know, below the top 100 line and how many good players there are on any given day or week it might be their moment and he seized his opportunity and it's just great to see. Yeah. Well, I can tell you that Catherine was right. It did end up straight sets as a win for Carlos alcaraz over Taylor Fritz. We watched the end of that match.

I believe it was a running forehand and just seem to sprain or twists his wrist and that was the report we got on twitter. Afterwards as well-knitted feel again. Precautionary wimbledon is right around the corner but team struggled with a lot of injury difficulties and he played a really nice round of thirty two match To earn vick. Or i think he played around a three to match. You didn't play around a thirty. Two metrics students play really good. I set to earn the two earned lead against each mannarino. But just again just doesn't seem to have things break right for him here. In two thousand and twenty one mannarino certainly dangerous on the grass courts but tumors up five two and so again not much to say about the match. The Tennis Podcast
Tennis to return, but not as we know it
"To the tennis podcast. It's not relived. It's not. An oral history, it's not Chris Evert week anymore, unfortunately, although I did very much, enjoy a Chris every week it's. It's a tennis podcast with actual sources, tennis based news and talking points in it, which is a very interesting alien prospects don't adjust your whatever device you're listening to his own This is reality. We're GONNA be talking about the prospect of actual live officials sanctioned tennis at some point in the not distant future. Myself Catholics David Law is in the house pro. I know you know doing it this way. Round David, but usually say something a bit more than a day yeah okay yeah. I'll say that Yeah, IT'S A. Visit to I I. Did you think we were done for the year when we were about? Ago Yeah six weeks ago. Yeah, I've I've always been been adjusting my expectations and thoughts and. Hopes etc sort of at every every turn along the way, but oh, yeah, absolutely. There was a long time when I was pretty certain that we've done for the what about Ema. Absolutely. Yes, ME, too. The future is a thing again. We're talking about it rather than the past. I missed the past. Just come to really enjoy the Paul the past safe, certain ground, and suddenly all the uncertainty and Rumor is back and we're not quite sure where we're heading again. Don't worry. It's still got fourteen shows with the past. Garnsey from Wimbledon as things stand at the moment and barring barring. Ya Cataclysmic Star events. Obviously which we've come to expect in life, we are going to be recording five grams slums worth of daily podcasts to Antigua and see which. One makes me all these conspiracy theories about five gene stuff. Was the coronavirus. Some sort of David Law manufactured events in order to find a way for us to produce. More podcasts in the twenty twenty David has the biggest grin on his face. It's definitely the silver lining that I can find Five slams. Yeah, we are. Explained probably explain why. Let's chase of the news because we've actually got. Live actual tennis news to to hit you with. Today today well, actually, it was more yesterday, wasn't it? Because the US Open and I mean it's been a not brilliantly kept secret right it was. It was leaked to the New York Times. It's been it's been all but confirmed for for a few days right? Yeah, it was clearly coming. Decision had been made an frankly even if you go back to late last week, and the all the plans being talked about by the New York Times and John Wertheim has been writing the story as well for sports illustrated, and then we did. We did a conference call. Would Feliciano Lopez with a? Dozen of the British journalist, because this is of course, fever tree championships week should have been the Queen's Club where Lopez won both singles and doubles titles last year, so he was talking to them a little bit about that, but he also really gave chapter and verse about the player meeting they had last week the. Zoom call now we're all we've all suddenly discovered. What zoom is over the last three months? This video conferencing ten. Days David Law I've done a lot of. but on this particular eighty, a planned meeting one they had four hundred players on, and this was the USDA and the the tools tending the players what the plan was to try to make the US Open plant. This is on the ATP side I leave. It turns out none of Novak. Djokovic handed out Roger Federer were on this call, but anyway the had four hundred people on it. And Lopez gave us chapter and verse on on this This media conference about what was said, and the lengths that they were going to to, and also that he was assured he was absolutely sure that it was going to go ahead. The US Open is going to happen. He said he also said it should happen. In my view, it's time the tennis to get rolling because. Bear in mind. He's not just tennis player these days He's a tournament director. He is going to be. Fronting one of the events that will take place in the remaining months of the tennis calendar. That's Madrid. He's the tournament director there, but he had a pretty stark message for the players in that call that we are going to have to accept less prize money. We're going to have to get used to that. We're GONNA have to basically stop being so precious what he was saying and understand be realistic about. The year we're in the climate. We're in the situation we're in
