"Good friday morning. Y'all welcome into the jc horse racing. Podcast brought to you by twin spires to here on the beautiful friday at least beautiful here in virginia hoped beautiful wherever you are nice. Eighty one degree day. I think the heat's coming back. Though we had such a pleasant week here it was like in the loaded seventies and word long sleeves the work and It's wonderful but Back to the ninety s which you know. It's virginia summer. i can't expect anything. You just have to savor the good weather when it comes and deal with bad weather when it does when that comes. I guess friday show. We'll look ahead to some of the weekend action. Of course the whitney card coming up talk a little west. Virginia derby talk a little la del mar a little bit later on in the the program and look for talking to the jury. Guys the topic. This week is who someone they would have loved to have There i'll do. Tv someone they would love to do a broadcast with that. Maybe they they never have so we'll We'll look forward to talking to ed. James and sky. You know. we'll talk some other stuff as well. We always do. I'm heading up to pimlico. Today can take in the races at the historic baltimore orioles. Can it go to the orioles game after that and probably just drive home late at night after that. That's my tentative plan. We'll see how that goes. You know very well could be sleeping in laurel maryland a hotel or something that could drive for half an hour. Thinking is fine. i'll be. I'll stay awake and then You know out ski. But we'll we'll see it's gonna be a long day but a fun. Day gotta take advantage of my my fridays when i'm out east here because everything's so not that far. Yeah when over. Grant's pass i. You know i can sneak up to seattle for a few days or it can go to san francisco. I guess i could go to reno. I haven't been arena since we're like eighteen we We have baseball tournament in reno. When i was eighteen years old it would have been memorial day. 'cause it was like the first tournament of the summer and i pitched very well. We're getting ready towards graduation so in baseball and actually honestly in all sports now seems like most of the kids are like the good kids like sign when they're sophomores or juniors and some of them earlier it's crazy. They commit to colleges so early. But you know back. When i was there like the really good guys all had something the summer after their junior year. And you know the okay guys in the small college guys usually came together during your senior year. Well i didn't really have anything. Come together. I was a good baseball player. But that's kind of you know. I was a good high school baseball player so when we went down arena oh i was first baseman d. h. Pitcher type. You know the guy pit for low power pit i. Was you know kind of crafty pitcher and i through hard as a little kid but eventually as i got older i you know through. I would say slightly below average for a good eighteen year old pitcher but i had good junk. I had a good curve ball split-finger and had good accuracy. Good control command if you want to call it that but I remember. I went to reno and i was starting the first game and i pitched really well and the coach for the other team was actually the coach of the community college. That was a ways out of reno. It was called feather river feather river valley. College is that feather river community college or feather river valley. Something some reason. I think there's value there but anyway but yeah. I threw a gym. I through five with five or six innings through like two three hit ball gave up one run and the guy offered me a partial scholarship. Like right on the site and my dad of course immediately like well. You're going to feathering rally. College congratulations boy. And i don't think. I want to play baseball anymore. I'm kinda done. And that pissed him off to no end. Of course he had already as i was a competitive golfer golfer. Baseball sports and i had made the state tournament and golf but our golf was in the fall. And but i was. I got down to where i was about six or seven handicap shot a couple of rounds at even and stuff like that and i had talked to some smaller schools about playing golf. There and most gulf wasn't really scholarship at the time at the smaller schools. And so you know i never. I never felt right like my parents. They said they would pay for college. I didn't have to worry about it. But i could never go to one of these private schools on their dime like it just felt it felt like too much and i was like you know i can go to youtube or washing state or central or western or whatever and it's going to cost seven grand a year whereas if i go to all these other ones it's like twenty five. That's crazy. Sign up going u. dub and but but my dad. When i was. I told him i didn't want to play golf college. And he's still for christmas. He bought me a golf travel bag. After after i told him i didn't wanna play and i was like well. That was kind of passive aggressive thing. You just did there. He's like you. You will love it if you do it now. My aunt not gonna do. It's i won't get won't love it but yeah reno. That's i think that's the last time i went to reno. Is that eight year old tournament that same tournament. My dad's gone. So i can't you know he can't get in trouble with anybody but you're my buddies had fake id's on the team and they were playing craps with my dad apu reno hotel and one of the parents sought and was not happy about the whole thing. Of course like we. We literally stated hotel casino. Like one of the big ones downtown. And i'm like why would you do that with kids. That's what we did so shadow dad. Good memories yeah. So as i said we'll talk a lot about the weekend card coming up the best pal out of mar the two year olds. I i've always maintained two year olds midseason stakes extra two zero stakes of any kind are just my worst. I'm so bad about kind of predicting who's gonna make that jump forward. All you really have to go off of his you know because they always better according to the speed figures. Whoever has the biggest or from the barn gets the most attention. And you know the mark. Cassie horse papa cap. I think he'll probably get fair but of attention. You know usually in a race like this. There's some baffert's there's not this year couple. Peter miller's whitson. Peter miller's run at colonial on tuesday i think it was too first time starters that neither one them ran a jump and so i didn't know if my guess was that maybe just the owners virginia people they wanted to watch their horses run which makes sense but win seen him show before and it was just kinda random that there's two random peter miller horses but peter has bet on mookie down toward the inside for gary barbara certainly You know looks. The part has been horse. That's you know went wire-to-wire last time in pretty impressive beat mckinnon who came back and won Adele mara. I think a week ago or so named after nathan mackinnon hockey player and owned by johnson. Who was nathan mckenzie teammate. Or maybe still is. But i think eric johnson might be getting traded. I don't wanna get traded air. I actually had eric booked on the show once and it was during the season but he was rehabbing but then he was going back by the time. I was like getting around get scheduled it. I actually kind of blew it on this on on this one. Because billy koch new. Eric subs like hey man you know. Be kind of cool interview of former number one draft pick. Nhl player that owns horses. And he's like you had nowhere and billy. He wanted to set the interview right then and so he's like here. Here's this number settle do it. You give them a call. And i was like jeeze billy slimming on vacation. I'm message in a little bit later. And then i to classic move by me but Yeah so the best pal coming up this weekend. One of the highlights. The yellow ribbon stakes also part of the saturday. Del mar sharm. Mia looks to get back into a winning form. After suffering a defeat last time lead in the we all the way to midstretch trying to go my own eighth The cutback to sixteen should help. I feel del. mar's at good track to kinda shorten up for a horse like this too because it's short stretch or shorter stretching not even three six hundred mile it's shorter than that and so This is a tough group domain. Laura's light shows up in here maximum rate. Of course who won that game lead.

"The third hour of the KPK outdoor show. I'm Bob Simms. Saturday's 58 a M right here on KFBK 15 30 A M on 93.1 FM. Um, I noticed all over the news this morning. There's a new study out. It serves. Lockdowns have no clear benefit. Uh, which a lot of us already knew. I mean, it's just so ridiculous. All these rules. I mean, you closed the restaurant, so it forces people in the private and family gatherings. I mean, it just doesn't make any sense. But Anyway, That's the way the most ridiculous of all, of course, is. Here's a perfect example. Come and she lick here. His Comanche leg a great leg one of my favorite legs. For a wide variety of game fish. They've got camping on the north shore camping on the South Shore. North Shore is in Amador County, which is part of the Sacramento region, South Shores and Kala, Vera's County. You can camp it, nor sure. But you can't camp it south. Sure. The dumbest thing I've ever heard of in my life. Calibers County has got to get his head out of the Sam that I mean, the health officer. The board of Supervisors. Where are the Where do they find these people? First of all camping is not ah, hotbed of spreading the virus. Second of all wild All this is going on you have everybody is under the same restrictions. There's camping allowed up. Collins Lake, There's camping 11. RV Camping Act. Rancho's Saeko Lake. In Sacramento County, but not on the south shore of Lake Comanche in Cal Avarice county. This whole thing is a fiasco. I just thought I'd pass that along to you. Um, the Feather River, Mike Searcy. Michael works the Johnsons made intact. We had his own shop for years and years in your star bait tackle, But Mike has always done a great job. He gets the details. It doesn't exaggerate. And I talked to him yesterday about the feather River and bass in Lake Orville. Mike, the Feather River. It's always a question, Mark. Whether we're going to get a good January for steelhead sometimes. Yes. Sometimes. No. This year with a lot left water coming down. I'm kind of up in the air. What can you tell us? Well, in the last couple of days. I have heard from some guys that were fishing below the green Bridge up there, Norville, Um and they were doing really good with the steelhead, especially the fly guy's name thing for him up there. Uh and and again, you know it. Zit missed. Some days are good, and some days are not that good. But they are getting some nice fish up there and the biggest fish. I heard up there was around £70 so nice fit. That's a very nice feather river. Fish is now yes. Anybody. So what's the word from the conventional fishermen? The guy's using roar nightcrawlers your spinners or something? Yeah, The road bite seems to work. OK on I've got some guys that are throwing small spinners and small crank baits and getting the fish here in the fish there. Um, Some guys have been drifting like the mad River worms. So how pink worms on getting fish on that as well. Okay. Ah! Seems to be a fair amount of fish in the river, which is good. Yeah, especially with these low water conditions. Yeah, yeah, you know, Mike over the years, even though it's early There always seems to be a few stripers in the Feather River if you heard anything this year. Yes, I have a couple of guys that go out and do some night fishing on the Feather River. And they've been picking up a fish here and there, but they're all really good size fish. I think one of them was a little bit over £20. And then the Yeah. Yeah. They had a couple of fish that they lost right at the boat. They were probably pushing £30. So.

"88 400 old 435. Welcome back. Welcome back. While we have been talking about how late salmon are all over the state and even up in Oregon, every single run of salmon Has been late, including the most recent example last Monday, the day before they closed the lower Klamath River. A whole school of fresh fish came in. That never happens in the middle of September. They're already well up the river. The same thing is happening all over the fish going through Sacramento right now. All the guides here myself included. Think those heir destined for the Upper Sacramento River because the Feather River has an earlier run the American River a later run these air, big, beautiful fish on DA. Speaking of that Kurt Kurt Border. Guerrero of Sack River Guide now joins us from up River. And tells us his feelings on a good morning, Kurt. I know Well, it's tough because usually by this time you guys having the best salmon fishing in the whole state, maybe the whole West Coast and it's just not happening yet. You're working hard getting two or three fish, but it's just not normal. It's unbelievable. I have seen it mall my career like this. But we do have a quarter. You fish jumping right now I'm up by Valek reek of by the boldest period. They fish jumping all over. You never know it might turn around. We're here when I'm talking for years now, and I'm trying to get off the phone with you and it goes on fires not will be ticket. Maybe it'll warm up, but Well, unless I know that you're very hesitant to protect good things for the future because you want to be realistic, but But I got to believe that there's a lot of fish in the Sacramento River system. They're heading your way. I mean, Ocean had a good season. We're having a good season in Sacramento. Right now. I think those are your fish. Eventually. I've gotta believe there's good. They're going to be there, Kurt. I hope so. We always talk about the old rabbit's foot. But I just just out here every day trying to make it happen. Okay. Well, good luck. I know if anybody's going to make it happen, you will So good luck today, and, uh, Keep your hopes up there. Have a great day. Okay? Kurt Porter Guerrero. He he agonizes over this. He will go. Where ever it takes to get fish, though his number 806 704448. Hey, just a final word. You know, I talked to Forster's about the climate change versus the The brush and the fuel in the force. "Second hour of the cave. OK, outdoor show. I'm Bob Simms. Always glad you could join me. Saturday's five day right here on Kfbk, 15 30 a M and 93.1 FM. Well, we talk salmon on the coast. We talked salmon down in San Francisco on the coast. A little bit about the rivers. Let's jump up to the feather River talked Rob Reimers of rustic Rob's Guide service. Good Morning, Rob. Morning, Bob. So, um I don't know. Quite how to say this, but you're telling me last night when we talked briefly. That you're snakebit. I'm going well, I don't hear that out of you very often. And then you tell me you have never seen so many salmon in the Feather River. Yeah. Okay. So what's going on there? Well, we're starting to get fish coming up here and of them, but the bite still not completely on I think it has a lot to do with the fallen into the water stuff like that. But man, I say yesterday we were just snaked that out here. There's people just about everybody around us with catching a fish if you and wait like what they have going on. You were coming back tomorrow because I gotta get this. Get this monkey off. Well, listen, I've gotta give you credit. You don't hear that very often noogies the other way around. I guess you got to pay your dues. Yeah, Yeah, I gotta tell you do sometimes. So So are these all fresh fish should have just moved him. Well, there's some Springer's. They're backing up from up there by the hatchery. There's a few dark fish, but we're getting a lot of nights coming in. I've seen a lot of fish jumping yesterday. They were all chrome, You know, So we're getting a really nice pitch up here. You know, now, now the time you know, it's been enough time after that Full moon. Yeah. Fisher are getting up here and Ah, go time. What's the water temperature? You know, the water temperature is doing pretty good. It's going down like 45 degrees in just the past couple days. You know it down. Well, 2.7 right now. Well, you know any water temperature? Going down that fast or up that fast doesn't affect fish. Yeah, it does. You know, in the area where the temperature is, you know it's been going up and down on us out here quite a bit. And I think that was given us the seesaw by, you know, You come out. You just never really quite know what you're going to get. But you know that the overcast we got from the smoke. It's really cooling it down out here right now Sitting on the boat, it's kind of cool. You know, And, um you know you could block out the sun. Uh, well, um is the river crowded now, Rob. I would be crowded, but it's Saturday, so there's a lot more people out here. Fishing. Ah, of course, of course. I mean, everybody's got get got to get broken in. But you have the people that don't fish it that often They put their boat in on domain not know the system. That is good. So everybody has a good chance to catch a fish, and they kind of mess it up a little bit like like at the mouth of the American. When somebody finishes a troll, they go right back through the middle of the boats. Well, that's not the way I mean something like that. Is that happening up there? Yeah, a little bit up here. You know, you get people sitting in the wrong spot and whatnot and You know what happened a little bit, but it's not too bad. Not too bad. Okay? That's good. That's good. Um, So how far down are they catching salmon? I know you fish fairly close to the outlet hole. And where that tempered with cold water flow meets the water commonality after bay to get that 62 degrees. So how far down river are they catching fish? Oh, from here. They're catching them down to the pipe hole. But you can't go below that right now the water so low, So they got to come up from from Gridley or or going down from up here. The down down below there even down through live oak and always down to Shanghai falls. They're catching them, but their comments body you know, it's the fish moving through. You know that one day you'll do really good. Then you go back and you can hardly playing fair. You know, it's this That seems to be the story this year with all the warm weather we've had. I heard. It's the warmest August on record, but ah, you know, up on the clam off they keep. They kept saying they were waiting for the fish in waiting for the end pretty soon. You know, 50 Miles up river People are catching salmon. Well, if the if the waters that warm there just shooting through Country would probably moving at night. Yeah, on DH. So, um, I don't know what it is about this year, but seems like every system as experienced that even up in Oregon at the mouth of the A rogue, A Gold beach right now. Fishing is not that good. But there's a lot of fish upstream. Usually the estuary people pile in there because it's really easy efficient. You got a chance to catch a fish in the fish Move in. Ah, from the Tidewater. It's been slow this year because the minute they hit that warm water of the road there like a rocket ship to get up to cooler water. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, They want to get to that warm water and get the cool water. But I talked to Chris Gator, the Sacramento area starting to cool down some. So you know, I think it will go a lot better. Well, you know they're catching fish. Now. We mentioned earlier from the mouthy American,.

SNP futures up 18 London stocks now of about half a percent. I'm Ed Cory with a Bloomberg Business report on news 93.1 KFBK. Gonna be a nice weekend to get out on the waterways. Let's check in with Bob Simms in the outdoor report. Yesterday's salmon opener in the rivers of the Sacramento Valley had to be considered a success, especially in the two areas we talked about previously. And that's the Upper Sacramento River and the Feather River for several weeks, reports on the Upper Sacramento River by Trout fisherman indicate there was more salmon in the upper river than they've seen and at least 10 years and on the feather River reports of seeing salmon roll by the after Bay outlet and other errors. Have been coming in for a week. Cesaire spring run Sam and most of them anyway, and it all proved out the Feather River not limit fishing, but a lot of people caught some fish. At least one or two fish per boat was probably the average in the first few 100 yards down below the after Bay outlet hole. And the fish were really nice. Of course, you're going to lose some fish because it's salmon fishing in the Upper Sacramento River. I got Texas and pictures from salmon. There were just beautiful. Most of the fish were in the teen, some in the twenties again, not limits, but pretty good open or a lot of different people caught fish will have reports on that and the American and other places. Tomorrow morning on the outdoor show between five and eight. Bob Simms kfbk. All right. Time. Now is 5 54 It's time for what? You're what happened on this July 17th. Albert Parnell, take it away. Yes, The year I have is 1955 And that's when Disneyland was dedicated in opened by what Disney in Anaheim, California, So when they threw the doors open on that place, guys The cement wasn't even settled. That's I mean they They went right up to their deadlines. And I don't know there's a book on Walt Disney and it's a great read, and I've read just clips of her little portions of it. You know, he went to banks for like many, many, many, many years, trying to get a loan to start Disneyland and none. None of them would loan him the money. They didn't see it. I bet that one bank that did was Tio chain. Yeah, there's one loan officer out there who's feeling pretty good about themselves. The next one I have is the year 18 50 that's when the Harvard Observatory I took the first photograph of a star. It was Vega Vega was the star back in 18. 50 people. Yep. And the last one that I have is the year 1976 Can.

"Second hour of the KPK outdoor show and Bob Simms every Saturday 5 to 8. For a kazillion years. We've been here bringing you the outdoor news on cave became 15. 30 A. M. A 93.1 FM, And now we're gonna talk to a gentleman that is got a little bit of news for us about the potential. This this Thursday's River salmon opener on July 16th in the Feather River, Mr Robb Reimers of rustic Rob's Guide service. Good morning. Good morning, mom. So you you got out on the river was yesterday. Rob Kind of searching to see if there was salmon around. Yeah, well, I've done some good work done on my boat earlier in the week, and I want to get out and just drive it So I went up in a block of 30 outlet and I decide that I want to go want about one, You know, kind of Guess he rampant. I wanted to do it once when there was no around Cape had problems. So I lost it. I looked down below with all that is on the flash where I normally fish. And anchored up for a little while. Just making sure my anchors holding a let And there was quite a few fish Roland and jumping and marking on my fish, green and Anything. And I'm really surprised. I mean, maybe vision game accidentally got than a prediction right here. You know, buying squirrel? Yeah, right, right. Well, what if he's in there right now, if that's so, then I wanna experiment with a couple of new lures. So I would put him out there and you know it took the hooks off the thing and was trying him out and right up by the surface, like a walking work. And I had 1/5 roll right behind. I think he'd come off after my lure and saw the boat took off before he did. It was kind of impressive. Yeah. Yeah, so you so you were just you were just holding the lure. Up behind the boat in the current when you were anchored just to see how the the lure would work. To see if it was the right. Yeah. Okay, I got you. Yeah, Just like a couple of feet deep, like in the lure, and they're right behind us. And the vicious blast hits a perfect you know, Like like you come up after allure this on me and then Turned off in the left. Yeah, that was pretty good. Now. Now you know, the Feather River Hatchery has been, I think doing a pretty good drop, tryingto build back up the springer run, and I've got to believe these air All Springer's up there now because it's just It's just too early for the fall Fish, isn't it, Rob? Yeah. Yeah, well, that's why they opened up on July 16th because they figured the most of the figures have gone through. Yeah, then ah, you normally you know, it's a little slow when it opens up. Because you know you're kind of on. Ah, In between point, so you know, decisions good right out of the gate, and that's a pretty good indication for the entire season. I think so, too. Yeah. Yeah, You know, I mean, I mean, there's a lot more fish. Well, and the same thing is happening. The trout fisherman up on the Sacramento River of by reading are seeing more fish more salmon up there than they've seen in 10 years. And I'll tell you that has come from, you know, 10 years ago they were seeing here 15 years ago. They were saying zero salmon up there. That's how bad a gun and now they now they see there's tons of fish up there so Yeah, Maybe it's just a good year for Sam and Springer's falls. Whatever so let's hope. Yeah. I mean, even have to go over and get a listen very stretching this year. You know, uh, I hope it's as good as it seems. Well, I'll tell you, we're going to know a lot more after Thursday on where the fish are, that's for sure. Yeah. Yeah, well, you know, traditionally seems like up there. You know, It's pretty defense on opening day, and then it kind of close down for a few days. That's like you know, the fish throughout the whole system. All of a sudden, you know that every living thing kind of Bruise him up for a couple of days, you know? But it will. It will be good. We'll see what happens. I know that they've already tagged what 2200 Springer's at the hatchery and Orville and and they haven't. They haven't been doing that for a while because those were the early part of the run, so I mean, it looks Lecter's of a bunch of fish around a good now speaking of that, speaking of the same kind of fish above the dammit Orville, What do you hear there? What's going on with our landlord Kings? Yeah, We're still getting some fish up there Being a lot more of the first year fish and not many hold over, but the fission still, you know, fairly decent work going. And about the same thing on death. You know, you want to be down about 60 70 feet for the first year fixed the hole, but we seem to be over 100 Okay? Think they have at that's the deal and I mean, I said earlier in the programme, there's nothing wrong with the 16 and 17 maybe approaching even 18 inches now fish because they if it wasn't for those big fish, we'd be happy with those fish all by themselves. Oh, yeah. A lot of years. You know, that's all we're getting up there, and we're happy the lark with other fighting fish. And there are some getting to be inches so you know, you know that's a good thing. I'm a little down a garage. You know, you bitch. Hillard's Mara Bullard's morrow. We still could kicking him up there. Uh, pretty much automatic up there. You've got a dark day area pretty much go anywhere you want and you'll get your limits, had a friend of my goal here and pitched by the dam and think he's okay there too, so things like He almost find everywhere. You know, it's inter interesting. Everybody that I've ever talked to up there says Oh, yeah, I like catching a lot of fish, but I wish they were bigger. And boredom. Our course is known for smaller coconut. And the department official. Wildlife says Well are studies show that people want the smaller fish. Okay, I'd like to see those studies. I've never seen those studies. Yeah, I don't think they're there. Now this is what we're faced with with our management like this this year. 50,000 fish were planted in like Shaver leg knew Malone is McClure, Don Pedro, Bash Lake Union Valley and Lake Tahoe. 30,000 were planete in Boca in hell Hole. And the two lakes that got the most fish. 75,000 and 80,000 were stampede and Bullard's bar. A lot of smaller basic here. Yeah, I can hardly keep moths hook, but that's what they want me. Well, that's what they do. Every year. They plant the two legs that need fish The least. Ah, we talked to people up the North Yuba River Thereabout..

A Sneak Peek of the Wild & Scenic Film Festival

"What is the wild and scenic film festival? It's it sounds like a bunch of hippies drinking up in Nevada Vada city. You're not wrong The Wild and scenic film festival is a opportunity for filmmakers and activists from around the world to come together to tell the stories that they care most about About protecting the environment. And this is your first podcast so low right you. You had all the equipment you went up you. You didn't know who you can exactly interview. What was it like Well it was exciting I did lose my phone with all the recordings on it for a period of about twelve of hours but luckily thanks to the The kind hearted people in Nevada city. I was able to get my my phone back with all these interviews. So crisis averted so Nevada city is like the heart of the like eighteen fifties goldrush right the forty niners that that's where everything happened is amazing when you go there because it looks looks like this old gold town. That's right it's it's right in the Sierra foothills in it it does look like and feel like in some ways that you're going back in time and and Melinda The Executive Director of the South you've ever citizens league tells us a little bit about Nevada city and history in the ways in which the Yuba river in particular has really shape the town cool so his Sarah talking with Melinda booth. Who's responsible for bringing this huge festival together every year? Uh So this film festival is now in its eighteenth year and it's an environmental an adventure film based festival here in Nevada city and Grass Valley California. So we're we're in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains about halfway between Sacramento and Lake Tahoe and we had some beautiful snow last night. Blanketing our town. But it's sunny and melting and we're ready for the eight thousand people that are going to come to our small foothills town for this. Annual event. So South River Citizens League we affectionately refer to ourselves by our acronym circle was founded back in nineteen ninety-three and a bunch of concerned citizens came together when dams were proposed on the South Yuba River and they decided that's not what they wanted for the river in their community and they banded together and fought those dams over sixteen years. It was a sixteen year long fight but they were ultimately successful in protecting the river by by achieving California State designation for wild and scenic status for thirty nine miles to the south you bought which permanently protects it this community really is all about the Yuba River. It's an economic driver for us. It's a place of renewal. It's a place of recreation. It's habitat refuge. It's definitely one of the most scenic rivers in California cornea and you have these beautiful smooth granite boulders. You have these emerald waters you have deep pools. It's relatively warm in the summer and it's a magical place. There's more folks who enjoy the river naked than clothed but. Tell us a little bit about the film festival. I see that the Tagline is where activism gets inspired tired so back in nineteen ninety nine. One circled did achieve that wild and scenic status for the river they were to crossroads and decided You know they achieved what they set out to to do. And so then the question was okay well organization done. Did we reach our goal or is there more to do and they quickly realized that. Gosh there's so much more to do. Circles mission is to unite the community to protect and restore the river. And there's lots of work to be done year round so we're focusing on that mission throughout the entire watershed so from the headwaters waters up at sugarbush ski resort if people know the area that's near the headwaters all the way down to the confluence with the feather river in Marysville the founders of the film festival were very very forward thinking and realized if they could create something that could create a sustainable funding source to help the organization that would be a real help to achieving in our mission and so wild and scenic film festival was created. It was of course named after the win of wild and scenic status and it started as two nights heights and one venue back in two thousand and three and it's grown here in twenty twenty to take place in two towns. We have venues and grass valley and Nevada city. It's five days as we have ten film venues. We have activists workshops we have celebrations. We have virtual reality lounge. We have an environmental art exhibition. There's really a whole lot. Outgoing on does the film festival travel and are there ways for people that live elsewhere to enjoy the festival and enjoy these films. Yes so we kick it off every year in January January here in the foothills in Nevada city grass valley in January but then we hit the road and we take these films on tour so you might see a wild and scenic event near you we have about two hundred and fifty events annually reaching more than sixty five thousand people with these inspiring stories and you can search for an event in your area and if there's not one you can be a host so what we do which I think is really incredible. Is We're actually partnering with Environmental Organizations. Really any kind of organization who want it to host a festival in their area so that they can raise awareness for issues in their community and raise funds for the work that they're doing so it's a really cool partnership a way to get these films seen inspire more people and really Increase the groundswell for the environmental movement. As a whole I love that Can you give us an example or tells Tulsa story about maybe the most inventive or unusual way that people have brought the wild and scenic film festival to their community. I love it when people do outdoor screenings screenings. It's really great so we have some folks in Florida with their shoes off toes in the sand. Watch these films at night outside so one of the cool things about living in Sacramento obviously is the Sacramento River. And I've always had this dream of going being from reading down to the sea. One of the cool movies that you've got to see them super jealous about is cold the Sacramento at current speed and these guys go in that story story which is a teeny little boat and floated down and you go to catch up with them. Tell us about Tom and Mitch. Thomason mentor great to me. They really exemplify the film festival which his in many cases transforming what we might consider to be ordinary people. That didn't you know. Set their careers to be filmmakers or even necessarily activists who fell in love with place and wanted to tell that story to others. And that's exactly what happened with Mitch and Tom. They would go out occasionally with each other with their wives on the river and in came to be Really compelled by the river and wanting to protect it and so they made this film Which ended up winning the twenty twenty people's Choice Award a really beautiful film and Really Beautiful Film and story and I thought it was special to that. Of course the Sacramento River flows through Sacramento so we've paddled on it and Goes through the very place where a lot of decisions about water in the entire state are made so just a lot of Nice different connections with this one. Sara Fest Out Utah With Mitch Dion and then with Tom Bottles who made the Sacramento at current speed. Which won the People's Choice Award The wild and scenic Film Festival Mitch starts by explaining how the idea for the film was launched? A was just looking for a place to row my boat down a river. I Love Rivers. I really like my little dory boat and I live in truckee aunt kind of stumbled on the Sacramento as a place to do some overnight trips without having to drive halfway across the country to Utah. Colorado or Idaho so Several years ago my wife and I didn't overnight trip on a section of the upper for Sacramento where we through our bikes into the boats camped overnight and they invite the shuttle back up to the car and we had so much fun. And we were so enamored with with what we found down there that I started doing longer trips. and Um Tom and I done lots of adventures together. But we've never took advantage Jeff. Our professional lives. He's a videographer and has made lots of films so I started telling her friends. It's about the project down here on the Sacramento and Tom's ears perked up and he said found sounds very well. Maybe you should make a movie of IT and So just hopped in my boat and Loaded up with camera gear and some food and crackers and smoke cheese and took off below reading and Started in a two week journey down the SACRAMENTO Some of which I done before and below Qaluza all the way down into the Delta was was unknown unknown you. I know that people navigate this piece of river all the time but whether we could actually row it and make it out there we really have. I've no idea all heard that the winds were extreme down there that Might be a really difficult journey. And Good Luck. What is it that you wanted to share with people the Sacramento River? The big thing is this water belongs to all of us and people may not realize that it's public domain. It's the water is supposed has to be managed to use for the use that's most beneficial to the most number Californians and you know we know that's a simple concept and after after that everything gets really complicated because a lot of give and take in tug of war but we need to be wake watch. What's happening attention to what's going on Out there because it belongs to all of

"In fifteen thirty eight AM the striper fishing, and the feather river is nothing short goofy. It's just crazy. Each week. I expected the die off, you know, because it just can't go on forever. But if goes on forever, rob Reiner's sent me pictures right up through yesterday. Unbelievable. He's with us right now. Good morning. You're learning about what you're gonna make just a career out of stripers in the feather, and forget, everything else seems like. No doubt. I mean unbelievable. Yeah, I it really, really good. I think what we're having a good fortune with this year is a fact that is staying, so cold the fish spawning, but we're not getting any of those big sponsor just, you know, few fish here and there spawning in this day and up here fact, those pick you yesterday, a couple of more big males, and they weren't they hadn't spawned out. They were squirting all over the boat. Fresh fish man. I'll tell you something. I mean, you know, you expect something like this in the month of may just kind of well that's that. And it just isn't happening. You know, you kind of expect it, you know, right now, Buchan trips, and I'm kind of killing people. You know we just have taken a week at a time, you know, I've got plenty opening because I didn't book anybody in advance because you know normally you kind of expect it to start dying down right now. Anything it seems like you'd better get bigger fish. I mean that's what that's what it seems like. Yeah. That's what it like. Well today is the full moon. Yeah. Yeah. And. Yeah, I know. That's crazy. Yeah. But, you know, you know, we've talked about this for years. Is it the light of the full moon or just the pressure and the tides? And the solar cycle that it makes these fish do certain things at moon stages, and actually, I think it's a little bit.

"Parade, and even the half day boats averaged about a fish inefficient half. And if you fish. What's, what's the striper count Andy? Lack of fish, or if the guys on the halibut they weren't mixed in seen him in the past. And so it was just a matter on top. Nobody's going to fish the rock piles now which was where the strivers could be because a hell of officiant. So good. We'll see what happens. All the way up to the. Still start. Guys shaking down lower sections of the delta, having nominal fishing as well. Yeah. Well, you know, we're, we're now we're just kidding. We did a report last week at this time. And we were wondering why the stripers just didn't go off at some of the well known spas, like the West Bank just below Revista LA and guess what? Saturday, it happened right after we got off. So. So. Nomadic. Yeah. Yeah. So we don't know where they are. But, but, you know, it's still possible you could get more of the feather river is still Chuck full of fish. You got a lot of fish heading your way. But I got a feeling you know, you don't hear much about it because people don't talk about it. But down in the midsection down below Revista and still above San Pablo bay. There must be some good food conditions because I got a feeling. They're, they're they're kinda hold over there. Little bit..

"FM and fifteen thirty AM on your dial. Well, you know, we've been waiting for the feather river to get going in anticipation of this. I called the Sutter county sheriff's department yesterday. Because I wandered here. And more reports about a lot of homeless people camped at the at the Yuba city boat ramp, and now people are afraid to leave their cars parked there cetera et cetera. Well. I call him yesterday afternoon, and they didn't get back to me. Yet. But I'm sure they will this coming week and I'll have report next week. On what they're gonna do or not going to do with that situation. A guy that knows that situation as Mr. rob Reiner's he joins us now talking about his trip yesterday. Good morning. Good morning. Bob. I think I don't think you're gonna get back here. Trying to pretend like there is no problem down there fail. It would be it would be a mistake. It looks like an RV park down there. Go park you left for people to watch your. Oh, really? Yeah. That's horrible. I can't even imagine you know to think back twenty years ago and. This way, it'd be I couldn't it. Horrible back and fishing. There's always a way. I'll I'll just let the our newsroom know about it. And then we'll make it a primetime story. Well, let a couple of TV stations and newspaper know about it. They'll be interested in. Yeah. Yeah. In fact, they got all the prime spot. They got all the riverfront probably the parking lot. Okay. So you put your boat in the feather. Where'd you put it in yesterday? Yeah. You know earlier this week I've gone down there. A couple of times, you know, just to see how the clarity was. And if anybody was caffeine fish tacos. And they were in a few fish, very many. But if you. The boy pump go I guess I had to go down the latter part of this week which was yesterday, and we went down to Verona and up to the feather river there. Yeah. Water. So you can negotiate easy. Yeah. There's plenty of water. Wait lee. I tried minnow. And the water's plenty clear down there. I mean this guy sustained to it. But if you look over the back of by boat at the kicker motor, and I could see my prop on it very easily, which is my indicate whether or not you can use minot, and we went up there and fish the lower the last mile before hit the sack to drift there. And we didn't do any good. So we from there. We just moved all the way up to beer can't be and there's an area that I like just below that. And we made a drift in their bark a couple of fish. But we never got one. So I went up around the corner and went up a little way, and we maybe drift up there. And then we gotta get rich. We gotta fish there. We've got another fair, and we wound up getting a really nice one. We gotta close founder. Yeah. You sent me a picture of the boy that was a fat. He was about as healthy as a Striber can be look Lord. Yeah. Yeah. He was a great fighter. I mean, he was running all over the river and try to get into the bushes a couple of times, and you know, really having a time with him. I really enjoyed that by it was a it was a good fish. And we wait on out there. We went above the nNcholas bridge and fishing up there. And all of a sudden, I started noticing the lottery was getting muddier. The river was taking a little bit of a swing up work. And I think it was getting some muddy water coming out of the bear river down there. So we just pulled up back down, and we fish down there and got a couple more fish and pity Saturday. Let's start raining on us and stuff. So we get said what the heck we got along back with just go go. Oh know, we didn't get a lot of fish yesterday. But the ones that guy were nice keepers. We got Wanda was barely in got to that was probably twenty two inches in that twelve Pounder. Yeah. Nice day. Yeah. That was a good. Find out what's going on trip. Yeah. Yeah. And all of our fish came between beer can't beach nNcholas bridge. Okay. So on the upper end of it. Yeah. There's a lot of lot of structure in that Burke on in that whole there, you know, with those islands are on the west side. A lot of structure for for all kinds of bass, including stripers and. I mean, it's just fishy that whole thing. Yeah. It is. It is it is. It's kind of a spot. You don't hit that much because so far away from any boat? Yeah. It is a nice fishy spot. The one thing I do want to relate to listeners is is if you do go up in that area around the corner their beer can be there is a island that there this out in the middle. You know, it's made out of rock and concrete and back in old killer of sort merge now. So you can't see it. I don't I don't know how much water to structure I was talking about. Yeah. That would be. Yeah. You know? I don't know when the when the what level it is worse. Right. But if there was just a few inches of water running over top that thing and you did it with your boat. You take your whole bottom out. Be sure and slow down and hug, the Bank and go round that thing easy, and Cody kinda figure out where it is larger that, well, that's that would be you know, the way the the feather runs in there that would be kind of on the the western side of the river. You know, if you're you know, or the southwestern side of the river. So if going up if you hang to the right Bank, you're gonna miss that. Correct. Well, if you hang either Bank, you'll be okay. You know, I know it's in the middle. And probably the best thing would be to slow down. You know? And you go around that corner. Just to be factually, especially if you had a product, you know, and yeah, you know, you'd be here admits it that way. Oh, good. That's that's a good report. I got a cost. We don't we just don't know what this rain is gonna do if they're going to start releasing more water. We just don't know yet. But. Hopefully, not. Yeah. I mean, it's it's getting in the late March. They're going to have to start storing some water here at some point. So we may catch there. Yeah. I know I know that you know, they go like the Bill, for example, they'll whole they keep it down to like sixty percent. And then they get to a certain point seventy and eighty you know, so we gotta be getting into the point where they're they're gonna keep more and more water in there. Now, we gotta I I've been postponing some Boca sturgeon trips from last week. This week and next week. And you know, I gotta get out and get some got a lot of clients that are wanting to go now everything happens at the same time. Yeah. Yeah. Actually, I got. I got a trip on Saturday and then a striper trip Sunday morning. So I'm gonna be pretty busy. See what happens? We'll thanks, Robin. Good luck out there. All righty. Thank you later. Bye. Rob Reiner's rustic Rob's guide service to book a trip five three zero six three two zero zero five one. So that's the start of it. Right there. You know, what you mentioned Verona? Little interesting history. Tidbit bid on Verona. The town was laid out in eighteen forty nine. Now. First of all, right. That's where the the the feather in Sacramento come together and the Donner party rescue part party, which came from overdose from sonoma's. Newell mountain mad Caleb. Breen would they what they got there and Caleb Greenwood waited for our went out and hundred elk and they got elk and they made elk skin boats to cross the river there just below the mouth of the feather. And that's where Verona is. That's not why Verona was there. But it's where the two rivers coming together. But it was laid out in eighteen forty nine. Which was of course, the forty Niners are coming over on land purchased from John Sutter. And it was named Vernon which was very popular back in those days named after where George Washington live mount Vernon. And didn't the post office was discontinued in the eighteen eighty s and it was reestablished in nineteen. Oh six but a new name had to be chosen because it was a Vernon down in Stanislas county. And so that's how it got its name Verona. Okay. After the break. Scotland says.
