"Welcome back Julia here on seven twenty WGN that of course is a score from the cold plastic Roman Polanski directed film Chinatown one of the best movies of the seventies and really a great film without also featuring one of Nicholson's best performances so there's a prequel series to the classic film Chinatown this in early development at Netflix variety is confirmed with sources I'm David Fincher and Robert Towne the film's writer attached pen the script it will reportedly focus on the exploits of a young Jake J. J. get us during his early days as a private investigator Netflix declined to comment where you stand on this well we saw what happens when they tried to make a sequel yeah the two Jakes was that also penned by Robert Towne and Nicholson and town road at Nicholson directed it yeah great cast sure not a good movie ends I understand the appeal of it off of course it's one of the landmark moments in neo noir as a genre and really yeah is visually referenced all the time is something that's really important also has one of the great I also is one of the greatest closing lines in film history yeah but I can see the and I mean looking forever I mean again but Robert Towne is involved which gives me a little bit of hope despite the fact that you know he was partially responsible for the two jacks which was just disappointing on so many levels I was really looking forward to that movie when I saw Robert Towne's name on it and that Nicholson was directing and starring I was like okay it seemed all the pieces were in place and it just didn't work no but I I do find it interesting that Fincher is really Netflix's boy right now yeah he did he just wants to work with Netflix he's already done mine hunter right with them doing another series another crime series should be pretty cool and it seems like they just given carte Blanche to do whatever you want yeah so hopefully that means that heaven Robert Towne can sit down and really hash out something that's worth watching the film was released the media channels that was released in nineteen seventy four star Jack Nicholson and Faye Dunaway Nicholson played get us who is originally hired to expose an adulterer who becomes embroiled in a much larger plot Roman Polanski directed with Robert Evans producing the film became a box office and critical hit upon its release racking up eleven academy award nominations town ultimately took home the film's loan Oscar statuette for original screenplay a sequel titled the to Jake's was released in nineteen ninety with Nicholson in town returning in addition to his Oscar for Chinatown the town was nominated for his work on the screen place for the film's last detail another Nicholson starring vehicle as well as shampoo and Greystoke the legend of Tarzan lord of the apes is either credited works include the firm in mission impossible should the Chinatown project go to series it would not be the first classic Nicholson Phil to get Netflix prequel series treatment the streamer is currently prepping the drama series ratchet starring Sarah Paulson from executive producer Ryan Murphy the series will explore the backstory of the infamous nurse rested ratchet from the one flat one flew over the cuckoo's nest wow is is is is Sarah Paulson is gonna work with Ryan Murphy for the rest of her career well he's been incredibly fruitful for her career no there's no question about and her the performances that she's gotten to give in in his series although I'm not as much of a fan is some folks are of American horror story I'm not a fan at all but hurt hurt American crime story was great she was phenomenal in the OJ in the OJ thing and that's that was the first time I was ever aware of Sir Paul's and I'll be honest I never seen her in anything before and then suddenly she was on my radar and I want to watch her and everything was interesting that she's going to play nurse ratchet yeah but I don't even hear about this I I don't I I do get afraid when word over explaining origin stories of popular characters you know do you does it really matter to know how J. get S. got to be J. get S. now is going to be something that is helpful to the story of Chinatown or something that just over explains because as much as I enjoy something like say the alien prequels I I like those against you know a lot of popular opinion but it takes away something of the mystery of like this anymore you know that's why it was scary and why Jay get this is cool just because he he just is he just is a character yeah you come in to a certain point is life this is how you meet him this is who we is do we need like an explanation of how he becomes that guy does it really matter who would play him that's a tough question yeah how do you tackle a such an iconic performance yeah how can I character you know I mean are they gonna go for someone who visually resembles Jack Nicholson are they gonna go completely different route that's a question you know where did you see Jack Nicholson and DA Jim the new Nicholson hasn't made a movie almost ten years I think you'll be hard to get him out to do TV yeah well I mean he's he's like in his eighties now he's not but but but yeah has made a movie whole he's been a big you know gone in the last movie made was that really disappointing James L. Brooks movie with Reese Witherspoon Owen Wilson I can't remember the name of it how do you know I think it's called how do you know yeah which I didn't dislike because I law I pretty much love everything that James L. Brooks dies but it was not great and it did not light up the box office at all because all I can think of is the last thing I personally saw him in was the bucket list of and I feel like once he got to because how do you know was yet twenty ten so they'll be ten years coming up yeah I don't I don't think you'll get back in the game maybe I have a need to need to now you might give one legacy performance before he's kind of two oh yeah do it I would like to see him come back though you know I mean a unit you know I get you know he's been he's been great in so many about Schmidt I love him in about Schmidt and I love that movie the great Alexander Payne but yeah I know he you know it's the it would be tough it would be tough for young actor to to step into that role you know it's true I mean it isn't a legendary character and legendary movie that would be tough for somebody to step into that it's one of the few movies that I would say has a per it from a screenplay perspective has a perfect screen Paul yeah absolutely the greatest player ever written preacher it's still taught in like films there's no question about it I don't there's no question about it it's a perfect screenplay that is in a you know they made Robert Towne who would go on to write some other really great stuff too like I mean the last detail here at the last detail and I love that movie heaven Nicholson had quite a relationship PM's of excess Intel really the two jacks yeah but many started hanging out with Tom Cruise they did he started hanging out with Tom Cruise he's got a credit on days of thunder yeah Robert is a credit on days of thunder the the stupid car racing movie what's his name in a movie called trickle right I think so I was I have a watch days of thunder and because there's a real a recent eraser there's a real race I think name Dick trickle and so they named him cold trickle I think was the character's name is Tom Cruise plays in days of thunder yeah cold trickle right Tony Scott director that right Tony Scott and and then Robert Towne has it has a credit on it and then Robert Towne wrote mission impossible rogue the free work to Tom Cruise a bunch of times well days of thunder is kind of just a remake of Top Gun Top Gun was wheels is what it is it's a switch that holds the same thing no it's not kind of cool days of thunder is a terrible movie it's a terrible movie how does that very good either but I remember seeing daisy days of thunder going what am I watching what is this it was before you know that was when Nicole Kidman it did they just got together in the call came in just got together this is before we realize actually Nicole Kidman could act it took a bunch of years before I realized that she could act like I said before was eyes wide shut when I saw her eyes wide shut I went whoa she's not just the she's not just arm candy you know on on Tom cruise's arm she's good and obviously as the years have gone on we know how great Nicole Kidman it's but it was eyes wide shut when I start eyes wide shut I was like what where did that performance come from all right so David Fincher working a lot on the net Flix stuff yet the two Jakes I remember being but I was very very excited about the two checks when I came out so and then it was really disappointing but it's again it's a hard it's that's hard to follow UP Chinatown no I mean because Chinatown is an absolute classic god is so good it's such a good it's such a good mood I have watched Chinatown while they give me an excuse to pop it in the old DVD player and watch it and I think the last thing that Robert Towne the last big thing that Robert Towne dead I don't know of big is the word to use he wrote directed a movie called ask the dusk in two thousand six with Colin Farrell and Salma Hayek I don't even remember that yeah so I'd is eighty four years old now can you still case still Hackett you think well I don't know I mean these you know these to be there around the same age Robert Towne and and and and Jack Nicholson you know been in the business for such a long time but at you know that's why you know something that he's he's left behind a lot for a legacy yeah yeah I can't really criticize much now and Jan Nichols to me Nichols been so many classic movies so and you got the we got a guy who looks pretty much just like him in the shining and then that then the doctor sleep now where they found the cat probably on the you know like Madison Square Garden or not masses were like just somewhere in New York being and Jack Nicholson perspire no idea but I was like let's look at that guy give me that man yeah run around Times Square with other guys dressed as Mickey Mouse I just yeah I was I remember you know watch watching doctor sleep a couple weeks ago in that bar scene I was like where did they find this guy not bad not bad at all no so all right well anyway that might be something we can look forward to we don't know we'll keep it will keep you posted on the Chinatown prequel TV series so all right Hey comedian Kyle Kinane is coming up right after we take a break here on WGN all.
