"21st century. And the listeners of KQED looks like we're going to see some showers maybe coming in a day or two light showers in the North Bay through San Francisco Friday night into Saturday, But New Year's Eve looks partly cloudy and try time now for fresh air. It's 706 on KQED public radio. This is fresh air. I'm Terry Gross. Happy New Year. We're happy to say goodbye to 2020, and we want to end it with something enjoyable and entertaining. So we're going to listen to a performance and interview we recorded earlier this month. Here's that show. Over the past few months, I haven't been able to listen to as much music as I'd like, because so much of my listening time has been devoted to shows and podcasts about politics. The election. And Cove it But when I do listen to music, really good music. I feel especially vulnerable to the mood, whether it's joy or sadness, and that's how I felt when I listen to the new album by Loudon, Wainwright and Vince Giordano of songs from the 19 twenties and thirties. It's the period Yordano typically draws from with the 11 piece band. He leads the Nighthawks. During normal times. The band attracts devoted followers who come to listen and dance. He plays tuba base and bass saxophone. This is not the music you'd associate with Loudon Wainwright, who's best known for writing and performing his own songs, which range from confessional songs about family dysfunction to satirical songs about politics and other issues. His Children include singer songwriters Rufus and Martha Wainwright and Lucy Wainwright, Roach, and they sometimes write songs about family, too. Loudon, Wainwright and Vince Giordano previously worked together on the HBO series Boardwalk Empire, which was set during Prohibition and was about Gangsters who made bootleg liquor and who served it in nightclubs in Atlantic City. Giordano and his band performed a lot of the music for the show. Loudon Wainwright, saying a couple of the songs the title track of their new album, I'd Rather lead a band is a song from the Fred Astaire Ginger Rogers movie. Follow the fleet. The album also features songs by Rodgers and Hart, Fats Waller, Harold Arlen Frank, Lesser and others. Vince Giordano and Loudon Wainwright are joining us from the hobo Sound studio in New Jersey, where they're socially distanced in separate rooms. They brought their instruments and are going to perform some songs for us, But let's start with a track from the album that may help brighten your mood. If you're feeling down, it's called so the bluebirds and the Blackbirds got together..

"Both of you back to fresh air. I love this album. There's so much joy in that recording that we just heard. I know the song from the Rhythm Boys and Paul White men, which had the original recording, I think, unlike 1929, How did you choose it for the album 11 of the songs we did on board? Well, campfire was something that being Crosby had done, and it's tough when you go up against arguably The greatest male jazz vocalist of all times. But for some reason, I don't know why, Vince, we decided that to take a crack at it. Well, it's It's just a fun, uplifting song, and it's not one of those songs that everyone has done. No one has done this since the rhythm boys did it back in the Late twenties, early thirties. No. One Not that I thought that I know of. If anyone would know you would know. I'm sure of that. So describe this project for us. What's the back story of how you two got together to record this album of music from the twenties and thirties? Well, the first time that Vince and I worked together, I was on a Martin Scorsese movie called The Aviator, his Howard Hughes Bio pic, and we sang songs in that movie. Uh and, uh, And that was spent time in Montreal doing that. And in a recording studio, and that was fun. And then is a zoo You mentioned we we worked on Boardwalk Empire. S so we have a bit of a back story. And then this fella call Randy Poster or Randall poster as he likes to be called and at our old buddy Stuart Lierman. Who goes to our guys produced this record, But they had this idea that Vincent, I should actually do and out the whole album together. And when that idea was floated, I kind of thought, Yeah, that'll happen. Then it happened. So it was kind of a wonderful, very happy experience that started out with those guys. Randy and Stuart thinking that it would be a cool thing for us to make a record together. Vince, you play this kind of music all the time. But Loudon, I don't associate music from the twenties and thirties to with you unless it's kind of, you know, like folk Country ish. Music like your Charlie Poole project. So where does this music fit in your musical life? You know, my dad had a great record collection. It was eclectic. It had Folk music and jazz, a lot of Broadway musicals. But I grew up listening to that that stuff and a lot of the songs that that wound up on this record, you know. You rascal, you more. I cannot wish you. Um I got them directly from from hearing them as an eight year old, you know, in Westchester listening My dad's spin these these vinyl records. Some people hate their fathers music, but you liked it. I did like it. You know, he loved music and tow. Watch him be enthralled by this great material was It was thrilling for me as a little kid, You know, so I I Aziz. You mentioned it. It's a lot of it is very happy, although some of it is Melancholy and sad. But its overall it's It's very wonderful, joyful music, I'd say. I like that. You're not trying to like, sing in period. You're just singing in your voice, and it sounds so great. I kind of saw it as an acting job not to do an imitation of being Crosby butt or some something like that. But it just seeing it in my voice, but somehow emotionally inhabit the material. So we asked if you would be willing to perform a couple of songs for us. So you each brought your instruments and you're in a recording studio right now. So, um Did you play Ain't Misbehavin for us and Vince, I think you'll be playing Tuba and Loudon, you actually brought a guitarist with you, David Mansfield, so he'll be featured on guitar. S o. You want to say anything about why you chose ain't Misbehavin? Well, I mean so many people love this song of Fats Waller, you know, was course a great entertainer and His songs. It's It's a great little vehicle, and then people really relate to it. You know, when they're settling down with one person, that's it. I mean, it ain't Misbehavin. We're gonna I'm just gonna hang with you, dear. And of course, it was revived in stormy weather, and I don't know it's it's just a beautiful tune that to play and sing and let's give credit to the lyricist Andy Raza. And also say that you know one of the things I like about the song hearing. It now is that it's really about being alone. You know, because you're lovers away, but we're We're so much of We're spending so much time alone or relatively alone right now, Even if we're alone with others, it's not a lot of Socializing for a lot of us. So why don't you play ain't Misbehavin for us. The song is on the album. But this is Vince Giordano and Loudon doing a life for us with a guitar assist by David Mansfield. 12300. It's a fickle Ege with flirting all the ridge here is one bird with self control. Happy inside my cage. I know who I love Best thumbs down for all the rest. My love was given heart and soul. So and concerned that no one to talk with all by myself no one the walk win, But I'm happy on the shelf ain't Misbehavin I'm saving my love for you know, for certainly the one I love I'm through with flirt. It's just you I'm taking up ain't misbehaving saving my love for you..

I don't know that part of it, but, you know, so like, yeah, the guy was like, you know, I'm out of the league, but also, you know, struggling to get his light life. Yeah. The states where my mind and I guess still my Super Bowl pick of the NFC. I thought they were the best team in the FC Spoiler alert. They're out of my top five will do. Top five bottom five in a moment, but, yeah, I mean, look, Josh shakeups is good there. Waller now might be in the top three tight ends and part of that rugs guy, too. He's good. He's fast. He was that He was a heck of a decoy last night, say, Jones from Austin. Hi, fellas. Oh, yeah. I didn't drop your personal unaware. You wanted to get back on the line so he could name drop, or you just want to take credit for that as well outside credit. When Ben you made him Played quarterback. He wouldn't take Ben Clements with them. Tio, He's Carolina. That's all very well, saying Clemens is the best quarterback he's ever On touchdown passes, not Derek Carr. I'm gonna look for that quote, but okay, not on the Internet. Is Jon Gruden. A good coach? Yes. Yeah, yeah, He's good. We're all the way around it because two years ago we were laughing. We were we were I was laughing with. You didn't ask me my opinion. I, um I thought we would believe that he knew what he was getting. And he was a fire sale. "Of the most amazing dancers and I don't know that people talk about that an often her enough but she does a scene in nineteen fifty three in the movie The Bandwagon It's it's it's the to the song dancing in the dark antenna park and I mean this is about four minutes something like that and it is the most amazing three or four minutes on film choreography that went into this and it just looks smooth and effortless and all the steps that they did Just wow unbelievable. I'm Fred Fred. Astaire IS IN HIS FIFTIES SENATOR EARLY FIFTIES. And he's any with somebody that's in. Her twenties lied around. Yeah So that is of course I got to do my friend And I love. Your situation was marvelous. Wonderful I I loved it I did. They never like not like anyone else. She was wonderful she was Marva so he was amazing. He was one well. That's how that's how you do voices. I always tell people that in person not that there's people out there at home struggling to get the the new ones of Gene Kelly and Fred astaire and why don't you WanNa Know Gene Kelly and it's very very simple. All you have to do is just talk about Leslie. Caron Frank Sinatra. They were wonderful marvelous. Sounds like yeah I got it is? There is a little bit of Groucho even very New York in there. That's really a wonderful thing. It really is does. It's got a little bit graduate that she she was an amazing dancer and off detracted odd again. Yeah I could seen I have seen that My favorite dance number ever. Yes we kinda come to a close here wolf you last minute. This to me is is the most amazing dance I've ever seen. And it's from nine hundred forty one story weather stormy weather the Nichols brothers and cab calloway's doing jump jive and then they break into their dance and I don't know if you know this dance with trump on the piano. I do know this dance and I'm so glad that you did this. This was this was on my radar. I I wasn't sure I thought you know what I think he's GonNa pick it if you didn't say it. I was definitely going to mention it. Because the Nicholas Brothers those guys leg break dancers like they got nothing. No those guys were not him and I don't know what I don't know where they came from. I don't know what they were doing but you watch it in. Your like human beings can do this. It's so athletic. First of all the athleticism is it's crazy off the charts and and yet it really it. It's still graceful two at the same time. And you're like how they doing this. They're jumping on the going back and forth Jumping on you know where the people are playing the saxophone trumpets. They're they're jumping on their stance and then when they go up the big steps together and then they heat jump over each other on the staff. It's it it's unbelievable I I. I've watched I'm stunned every time I watch C. Every time yeah yeah now. I'm really glad you mentioned that because the I don't think that when they do like retrospectives that that that the Nicholas Brothers really are are mentioned. I think they wanNA was still alive just to a few years ago. Older of the brothers was younger. Brother passed away. It was Fayard in. I forget the other one yeah. They're they're unbelievable. Just anytime you get to see them on Film Day. They're just ridiculous. I mean Freddie Fred. Astaire was like they are incredible aide said he'd never seen any item unbathed dancers in you know sadly there during films at a time or African Americans are not appreciated. No and a talented in that film. Just the loan. That one movie Lena Horne Bill Robertson. Cab Calloway Yeah I forgot fats waller. And all three Nicholas Brothers Dooley Wilson who played the piano in Casablanca link. And then you have music by Harold Arlen Fats Waller. I mean Jimmy Hughes Bill. Rahm nods great stuff. Yeah there's some great music in there yet. Great great great characters actors. Yeah it's good stuff so yet my favorite dance. That's the top set for me Lawrence Berryman. You are the man. You crushed it. You went way beyond expectations. I'm very impressed. Your tone. Don't listen I don't give that up easily. I mean seriously you know I know I know you'll let me down again. And then another few traps. He'll say something that will just get under my skin but no you crushed it. These are great. These are great picks. Yeah I recommend all of these always movies and and you know I have to say like I do think that the the fact that they're so cheerful some of these it is probably a reflection of when they were made because it was either. They were made a lot of these musicals during the Great Depression certainly fred astaire and Ginger Rogers when they may shall We Dance? I mean that was during the Great Depression in the thirties and Buck privates is made in the early forty people are trying to avoid gets with the war. In musicals were help people during wartime. They needed stuff to cheer them up and he came in and upbeat. And honestly when I watch these things I mean. We're dealing with some pretty heavy stuff out there for a few minutes. I watch this stuff and I just was like. Oh God I love this forgotten. How great this was yeah. It's just so much fun to watch. It takes you away it really. Does it just puts you in a better place? And it's it's weird because we've talked about filming war and that was that started like in After World War Two we saw. We saw a lot of films made that were that were kind of dark. And and and you know the the musicals in late forties early fifties they were they just They were like if you WANNA dot still want to stay in that cheerful place. You could find. You could find those so I think these are great movies for People. Look at now. They're Real pick-me-up Salta and then fun to watch I would recommend the The that's payments for those. That are like me who don't sit through all the fluffy musicals you get the best parts and They're fun to watch so Yes hopefully this is the last one will do Laureus Fayette voices and as you saying. That is a thundering and raining outside my door. Yes time to perfectly so perfectly well time. Well listen. Thank you again for pushing me into this idea to get out of my comfort zone. It's good to do that. Excellent But beyond the lithgow because he wanted to be pushing you out of. Your Comfort Zone soon. Yes our Vokes. Ditches may very well be once again. "Yeah that's wonderful how does your uncomfortable ness around crowds affect performing live you know what I love it I can't quite explain it and maybe a and eventually I will come to hate it but I think there's something about having a stranger say that they've touched you touch them that is a very fulfilling for me and it's as simple as when Rachel said that she wanted to sing with you did you start writing pieces specifically for her you know I think I started off just sort of writing Rachel is talking about like learning Ella Fitzgerald and learning serve on and I think I was like very committed to the idea that I should be very pure and right for people of the era and so I was writing Sinatra songs and fats Waller songs and Billie Holiday songs and Peggy Lee's songs and I think that's how I did it for a long time and we certainly sing a lot of those songs but I think alone at last is a song for Rachel and and I think we have a song called without a thought for my heart which I definitely wrote with Peggy Lee in mind but with also knowing that Rachel doesn't sing like Peggy Lee very often and that I think she would kill it singing like Peggy Lee kind of in a vulnerable whispering soft space and it took us awhile to get to that place in the recording studio where she felt comfortable doing it but it's everything I I dreamed of when I was writing that song and it's not exactly what you would think of as a racial price song but I think it's like exactly when I think of as as an ideal interpretation well it's been such a pleasure to talk with you guys and I'm gonna ask you to do one more song and the read this is a song that you just mentioned which was without a thought from my heart you said this is a song that you wrote thinking about Peggy Lee yeah she has a very tender very quiet way of singing that is incredibly all hers and it's my platonic ideal of what romantic female crooning as so yeah that's I wrote it with that idea why don't we hear it but before we do I just want to thank you both so much for coming on the show Rachel furry thank you very much for being on fresh air thank you thank you very much.

"She lives in Seattle. She loves jazz jazz standards, like fats Waller, and I did a story about her in two thousand twelve because at that time she was still performing twice a week at vito's in Seattle at ninety five six hundred ninety two years old helped me with them. But I got an Email yesterday from ruby bishops great granddaughter, and she told me that ruby now has dementia and she's living in assisted living, and they just moved her in. So they're selling your house, and they need to have an estate sale and all the money that goes from the estate sale is going to help with her care. So I wanna play you part of my feature that I played when this came out so you can get an idea of ruby. And then I'll tell you the details of how you can support the family coming two years. Have you been working in playing piano and singing I can't count that for a long time really Bishop is one of the few remaining Seattle jazz legends. She grew up on a farm in eastern Washington. And was the first African American baby. Born in Thurston county, and she was born with long piano, playing fingers and a bug to perform this is when I was six years old as making a lot of money say and dancing. There's would come down all kinds of money from the grandstands and more than eighty years later. She's still performs at vetoes on Seattle's first hell week. I work Saturdays and Sundays and love every minute of it. Gosh, it's fun and her friend and protege. Larry Napp says it's always something to see some performers perform for people that ruby connects with the people. Connects if people are enjoying her the songs just roll out of her because she really does feed off the audience. Don't you think I watched? Ruby grew up playing music and eventually started school at the university of Washington. Let me take music in college. She wanted me to be a pharmacist. And I didn't like any of the science. I wanted to play music, and so I took off and never looked back because I didn't want to be a pharmacist married one. But I didn't want to be one. And then she started to meet some of the great. So I started studying.
