"Foolery. I'm Chris hill with me today. Our man in North Carolina academy. Thanks for being here. Thanks for having me as always, Chris. We've got some upgrades to discuss in the travel industry and global apparel retail. But we are going to start with the latest from fastenal third quarter profits from the industrial products maker came in higher than expected shares of fasten all up a bit and close to a new all time high. This is not a household name, but holy cow are they in the business of household products. I mean, you just go to the facet all website and hardware lighting sealers, electrical equipment, batteries, fasteners. This is a good report for them. That's a great report, Chris, and you know, it's a company that I bet lurks in the subconsciousness of many people. If you've ever driven down the highway and just been half paying attention and seeing a fast and truck plow past you, it's a name that we're sort of familiar with, but like you say, it's not household. But a good company nonetheless for people who like industrial stocks and don't want something too flashy but companies that have these very solid models that just need optimization over time, they sit in a great place in our economy. Fastenal as the name implies actually also sells fastening products fasteners. You can think of it as a glue company in our economy. And for that reason, I also like it as a bellwether of what's happening out in the larger world. This quarter, net sales were up 10%, gross profit slight increase versus the prior year. They gained about one percentage point of gross margin to 46.3%, which is a lot in this business. That's fairly impressive. And a nice bump in net earnings up to about 243 million. That's another 10% year over year increase. What I like about fastening a lot is that they have more technology being infused into their selling process than most of us realize..

"West Texas intermediate crude holding above $80 a barrel 80 66 on WTI up now by two tenths of 1% I'm Charlie peloton that is a Bloomberg business flash Bloomberg opinion informed perspectives and expert data driven commentary on breaking news It is time now for Bloomberg opinion and today we welcome columnist Brooke Sutherland who has a terrific piece out with her collie Terrell at la chapelle about their earnings season coming up Brooke thanks so much for being with us I'd heard some encouraging things about earnings that I read your piece I'm not sure I'm encouraged anymore You got a lot of warnings out there I mean I think that's really the question I think there's a potential for this earnings season to be very ugly The supply chains have been pretty well telegraphed and we've already seen a wave of companies coming out and already warning Wall Street that hey our sales are going to be weaker than we thought they were going to be just because they simply can not get their hands on enough parts and materials but then on the other hand to your point I mean we had numbers out today from industrial distributor fastenal And those were actually pretty encouraging But I will say I think there's going to be a really big divide between the big companies and the small companies a company like basketball that's quite large can use its scale to really mitigate some of these supply chain challenges in a way that smaller companies just are not going to be able to Yeah so let's start with the supply chain issue Go through some of these issues One of my favorite lines is the markets may have been patient with the pandemic ate my profits but they may be less patient with the my profits are trapped on a cargo ship in the Pacific which is a great point because last year sort of corporation you had a bit of a past didn't they They did I mean for understandable reasons It was a pandemic that came out of nowhere and really disrupted everything about the way we live our lives But you know I think that sort of get back to the question as investors are looking for execution There are some companies who have proven more able to manage these supply chain disruptions than others And I think those that are able to find ways to work around the log jam at the port or redesign their products to accommodate shortages Are going to be rewarded for that But I do think the other big question is just how long your supply chain styles are going to last Because if they keep going as they have been that really starts to threaten to take a bite out of demand And so these workarounds are great and the companies that are able to find a way to manage through like I said we'll be rewarded for that but at what point do you start to see demand come down just because companies can't afford the cost Or you know they can't afford to wait that long So their products to show up And you pointed out going to the demand side of the equation you pointed out for example Bed Bath & Beyond really had their retail stock drop Sharply at what point did they were saying a lot of companies buy the overwhelming demand but maybe that's going away Right I mean I think you've seen stocks factor in these supply chain issues They've been very well telegraphed people understand what's happening at the ports They understand that there's a shortage of workers and parts But demand really has held up for fairly well and what stocks are not priced for is any indication that that's starting to change And so when you get warnings like what we got from Bed Bath & Beyond I think that really starts to scare investors because you know you look at where valuations are where we're still factoring in a pretty significant amount of growth into 2022 and 2023 and companies have argued that that growth will materialize with the sales that they're not able to make this year will simply happen next year But I think that there's a legitimate question as to whether that's actually the case I read an analyst note the other day from Barclays Julian Mitchell who made the great point that there's not a lost and found department for revenues You don't necessarily lose revenue in one year and you're guaranteed to find it in the next year So that just gets back to the question of how long do these supply chain snarls last and do they at some point start to really take a bite out of this Well if your costs are going up that means you've got to get your prices going up And there's a question of just how much elasticity there is Absolutely I mean there are some companies especially on the HVAC side who have already done four rounds of price increases to offset not only rising shipping costs but rising raw material costs also rising labor costs things like that And so far customers have been fairly receptive And I think part of that is just because everybody understands what is difficult operating environment it is But they're not willing to pay anything in everything for an extended period of time And we may reach the point where we start seeing some pushback with customers to stay look You're coming to me for the 5th or 6th time in just the past year I can't pay you anymore for these products And I'm not willing to or maybe the demand isn't there to support that product at any cost kind of mentality And then you also get into supply chain problem with workers We still have a shortage of workers in a lot of industries We do I mean we just had the job opening data today and there was a little bit of improvement Came down to relative to relative digital eye but we're still nearly record levels and it's a manufacturing industry that I cover I mean you're looking at still 870,000 unfilled positions And one thing I thought was really striking from thousands earnings earlier today is they were one of the few companies that have regularly updated investors on COVID cases among their workers And they saw really elevated COVID infections among their workforce And so as you think about that labor shortage you still have workers on the sideline who are seeing people get infected in the workplace and saying I'm not willing to risk it And I think that that's an underappreciated factor that that's keeping people out of these jobs And if companies start to feel pressure then they start to do things like one of the points you pointed out was cut back on advertising That's one of the things that when I used to work at ABC that's what you'd see the advertising get cut back first Well especially in this environment where companies can't keep up with existing demand You're not necessarily worried about bringing in new customers but that does sort of get back to the question we were talking about about demand If you're so preoccupied so stressed about trying to just fill these existing orders you don't have any energy left over to chase new customers or maybe you don't have the budget to spend on advertising to draw in these new orders And so you know it does sort of become a self fulfilling process at some point And you need to really keep tabs on all in the business So Brooke has always is a terrific colony.

"We appreciate that Again a big movement in the markets today Kelly Another 1% move this time to the upside So the volatility continues for these equity markets That's going to look under the hood and see what's going on here with Bloomberg's stock editor Dave Wilson What's going on as short as a lot of green You look across the 11 main industry groups in the S&P 500 and they're all higher And you do have kind of an interesting split though between the best and the worst performers materials leading the way And so you know you talk about commodity producers there and if you think commodities energy is part of that mix except there the worst performers on the day Those stocks and crude oil being down on both sides of the Atlantic may help explain why And actually the S&P 500 energy index is up half a percent which is saying something considering crude is down Mia look across individual stocks I mean there are only 24 lower in the S&P 500 right now That just how broad based the advances here Is this just buying of the dip even though we didn't actually end up with the dip yesterday but still stocks are cheaper than they were say start a September Well if you think about yesterday me what was interesting is that you know you kind of settled into this pattern in the past week or so of up one day down the next and that's where things started out S&P 500 one point was down 1.3% and then close higher So you could argue it's a show of strength and would help kind of provide some context for understanding why we're up so broadly in today's trading You know especially when what little we have in the way of earnings wasn't always well received when you saw the numbers out of lamb west and this is a company that does frozen French fries other potato products Shares are down percent after their fiscal first quarter earnings and sales came up short of analysts average estimates of Bloomberg survey So you know bit of a disappointment there And nonetheless it's moving higher I wonder how much of this market moved today is the fact that we're not going to have a default At least we took that off the government's not good The near term We've kicked that can down the road Because to me it doesn't seem like any kind of solution other than it buys Congress a few more weeks maybe Well and that's not nothing because you know if you look at money markets I mean you certainly seen some concern reflected in values of futures contracts and so on And in treasury bills as well So the idea that at least it's been put off a couple months I mean you can understand why that would be received as a positive and may well be helping things along here Can I ask you about Moderna as well You can ask whatever you like Kaylee Well I'd like to ask you about Moderna I will take you up on that Dave The vaccine makers have really been struggling really since we got the news of the merk COVID pill but Moderna in particular now you're having a lot of countries Sweden Denmark Finland saying they're not going to use it in younger people Yeah that's one side of the coin The other side of the coin is come to just came out and said they're going to spend half a $1 billion to build a vaccine plant in Africa And you talk about a region that needs that kind of investment Africa certainly qualifies I mean you know we talk about vaccination rates here in the U.S. or in Europe You go to Africa they're nothing like what they are Again on either side of the Atlantic So you know the idea of that kind of development you can understand why the stock's higher You're talking to 2% gain but then again you neither Pfizer nor its German partner BioNTech or up all that much after filing here in the U.S. for emergency use authorization of their vaccine in 5 to 11 year olds They're higher but a Pfizer up 1.8% at the moment All right so for markets reporters like yourself Dave stocks reporters like yourself this is the calm before the storm next week What can we expect next week I guess we start with the banks that kind of kicks us off most earnings periods As ever although I will say that we do get one report the day before fastenal which is industrial fasteners I mean not the biggest competition across a lot of industries supply chain Yeah no question And we've seen the supply chain issues come up again and again I mean Levi Strauss has managed to get around those issues and which helps explain why their results out late yesterday were so well received I mean the sheriffs they're up more than 8% but you know going back to earnings have vassal then that would be on Tuesday and then Wednesday things really start to heat up with JPMorgan Chase and BlackRock as well as Delta Air Lines You know I think blue jeans are kind of like soda Coke You either cook or Pepsi person I'm a Levi person As opposed to a Wrangler or Lee Right which would be VF Best I checked Okay Any preferences strong either way here I'm not sure if you should wear any pure blue jeans Okay wear like black denim which is you know is he sure to find But I do think the Levi story is really interesting Dave because they had said we are facing supply chain issues we're dealing with factory closers We've just been able to pass all those costs on And that's really going to be the question for companies across industries It's just the ability to exercise that pricing power What kind of companies are going to least be able to do that Well I mean that becomes the issue I mean you think about more of a grocery chains that will no doubt be an issue more commodity products that may well be an issue I mean Levi's has the brand name and the reputation And I should point out I was not quite correct that the business with Lee and Wrangler now belongs to a company called contour brand Those results will be worth watching as well to see if they can replicate cowboys Cowboys wear wranglers is what I think That's what I've been told So if you're a real cowboy out there on the range you're running your wranglers But the rest of us I guess suburban dads levis and lees and things like that Whatever it takes to stop Paul Sweeney does not buy his jeans pre ripped Stressed No I do not Although that's a thing And you pay for it I guess All right Bloomberg stocks editor Dave Wilson thank you so much We appreciate that We're going to have more coming up on our jeans discussion But it's 40 year birthday for Bloomberg caley It is And so we've been kind of accelerating celebrating around the office They've had some cool stuff for us today I think it's donut day And specialty lattes and things I might have to take a recon up to the 6th floor Hopefully I'll return And you know Paul lattes and donuts two things I have never had in my life But maybe You've never had a donut I've never had a donut Sarah What are we doing Oh my gosh All right let's head down to Washington D.C. world.

"It is the sector due for a happy new year. Bloomberg opinion columnist broke. Sutherland is here to tell us how industrial stocks are already pricing in a rebound. Brooke first brings up to speed how much the sector suffered this year. I mean, you know, In some ways it actually suffered less than other parts of the economy because factories were able to stay open at the time when you know many places were not places like restaurants, movie theaters. Things like that. And so you really seen, you know manufacturers. Be a recovery in the last couple of months, and this has come, you know, much faster than many people thought. I think the question now is, you know Well, anything derail this recovery, And so far, it doesn't seem that that's the case. You know, we've seen Rising counts of coronavirus cases across the United States. But you know from the companies that have given periodic updates companies like 3, A.m. and Fastenal, which tend to be, you know, sort of on the forefront of any changes in economic backdrop. They're still seeing a progression in the recovery. They're seeing momentum continue, And so that doesn't bode well. Now you have to take a step back and say, Well, you know, investors have caught on to this trend andare, already pressing of fairly significant recovery into industrial stocks. Speaking about certain bright spots. You spoke with one analyst who recommends looking for companies that could improve business through cost cutting or asset sales. Naturally, that points to the larger conglomerates like G So it's not necessarily conglomerate but it is. You know, some of these companies that have called self help stories. So G E is one. You know that obviously has had its fair share of challenges over the last couple of years. And you know, on the flip side that that doesn't mean that there's more room for improvement here, both in terms of the financials of his business units. This and also the stock price, which you know remains fairly depressed when you look at it over a longer term. Trajectory. No other companies may have opportunities for asset sales or portfolio. Everything's companies like Dover, potentially another one that the Barkleys analyst really special calls out his Ingersoll Rand, which merged Earlier this year with the business called Gardner, Denver and is now sort of re formulated itself is a new company, and there are some margin opportunities there for that company. Incoming President Joe Biden has talked a lot about creating green jobs. What could we see there in the impact on manufacturing? I think you know, it was very interesting when the Trump administration came in, and he platform for that campaign was revitalizing US manufacturing. And so you saw a number of companies come out with these press releases counting their efforts to create US jobs now, of course, some of those work Slightly a grand dies or recycled material from previous announcements. But I do think you know what you'll see companies increasingly focused on them. Device administration is Environmentally friendly policies on gold to curb greenhouse gas emissions. We've already seen this to his stomach spent already with General Motors coming out and pulling it support from the Trump administration's lawsuit that challenged California's ability to set stricter admission standards than the federal government. I think you'll be more in that vein out to companies credit. This is something that they have been focusing on for years now, and increasingly, They just see it as good business. But I do think you know that it's going to be something that they're gonna want to continue to draw attention to you. Just given where Biden administration priorities are on that front finally broke. How has the pandemic force manufacturers to rethink how they do business? I think the biggest thing has been around supply chains. Now this is something the industry was already taking a very close look at in the wake of the U. S trying to Trade war, which made these far flung part networks that had been, you know, really a key part of many manufacturers business model for a long time. Less tenable. It just didn't work. It wasn't is economically attractive. You have the terrace to deal with that, then you also have rising labor costs in China. And now I think the pandemic has just really accelerated that rethink around supply. James I hear from executives all the time. Think they want to try to put More of the manufacturing process closer to the eventual point of consumption. And in some cases that is going to mean re shoring factory work back to the United States. Now the question I have is What degree that actually translate into jobs in the United States. Of course you all have. Mexico is part of North America that is closer to that U S market that a lot of these companies cater to, But the labor costs are cheaper there and there are you know Benefits to putting a factory there. But then, on the other hand, you've got so many CEO is talking about automation and have the unique aspect of the pandemic and the need to allow for more social distancing has already led them to invest in more automation, more robotics in their factories, and I do expect that trend to continue, so it's very possible. You could be a situation where manufacturers bring a significant amount of factory work to the U. S. But a lot of that work is ultimately.

"Don't feel like all the season's over what are you going to do now because I have no doubt this T. mobile will bounce back and hopefully put forth a good effort next week against Virginia and if you do please Brittany right back on track and frankly still ahead of where most people projected you would be other Clemson kicked that's on returnable one minute to go forty five ten the Tigers lead over little most concerning to me right now is the health of has on hall and and really cutting him has on all actors did return did not return to the game so we did not see him and then Cunningham wasn't as quite as effective as he is running the ball today me and being elusive in the pocket and then finally is taking a bit of a beating to so you got a lot of guys that hopefully can mend up over the next week did calmly place them against Notre Dame remember for sure recall Fastenal pass went the whole way I was going to be played at Florida state in any plate away class we can now claims that's a pretty good primers service your career that's for sure only takes the snap hands of all of the Hawkins no less Berkeley he spins and gets away and then hit again and not down the twenty yard line hard Berkeley haven't seen much but he is the third running back in you know you generally go three deep throughout the course of the season so I'm sure he'll get some rest before the end of the season and see what he can do this will be the final play it's forty five ten points in those little run from its own twenty nine yard line disappointing in ways but but not a discouraging day necessarily for the cardinals there's a hand off again Berkeley takes at rams head and it's not down to thirty one and I should say about its two back legs and squeezed out that last touchdown eight got it into the forties and low level I had that one drive to score but overall if you look at some of the things coming into today the full doesn't turn the ball over they probably have a much much better score a lot of times that's the defense forcing that by the way that last touchdown makes it the first time Winston has scored forty or more against an ACC team for three years that's what they've done to Lowell the last four times they played devils Sweeney and Scott Satterfield exchanging I'm sure some warlords and a handshake at midfield but folks would you see Clinton.
