There's been tanks and armored vehicles heading toward the border all day long. And Hamas, I have to say, has attacking been some of those convoys heading toward the Gaza border inside Israel. They've hit a few of them already. The US is not involved militarily, but Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin has pledged more weapons, munitions, things like that have already started arriving in Israel. And then the US Marine Corps, they're in the Persian Gulf actually right now, the 26 Mu large amphibious ships, and they might steam toward the Mediterranean as well. It all depends because some of these hostages, from what we've seen, are Americans that Hamas has taken. So that becomes priority number one for the US government. More than 1 ,000 people have died this weekend, with more than 600 Israelis killed in the Hamas assault, more than 400 Palestinians dead in Israeli airstrikes. At least two members of Congress were able to safely part Israel after being present for the attack by Hamas. Senator Cory Booker of Jersey New and members of his staff were in Israel for meetings and were required to shelter place. in New York representative Dan Goldman, his wife and three of his children were in Israel for a family bar mitzvah when the attack began. There's concern in Congress that the situation in the Middle East is unfolding at a time when the US House is faced without a speaker. WTOP's Mitchell Miller has today on the Hill. I think it sends a terrible message. We have to get a speaker elected this week. Congressman Michael McCaul, the Republican chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee. He says it's dangerous and wants to quickly pass a bipartisan resolution to condemn Hamas. We want to get that on the floor by unanimous consent, whether or not we have a speaker in place. McCaul speaking on they try to coalesce behind one of the leading candidates for the speakership. House Majority Leader Steve Scalise Jordan, and Jim chairman of the House Judiciary Committee on Capitol Hill. Mitchell Miller, WTOP News. Former President Trump is speaking out about the race to become the next House Speaker. Republican members of Congress will be meeting behind closed doors early this week in an effort to find the winning candidate for Speaker the of House. Insiders say they need to reach a private consensus over the two announced contenders. Louisiana's Steve Scalise and Ohio's Jim Jordan noting arguments last week nearly came to blows with the ouster of former Speaker Kevin McCarthy. Florida Congressman and Trump loyalist Matt Gaetz, who set the removal in motion, says on NBC's Meet the Press it will all be worked out soon. There won't be a single Republican, sans maybe Kevin McCarthy, who doesn't believe that we have upgraded the position. This is about ensuring long -term stability financially for our country. Former President Donald Trump Friday endorsed Jim Jordan, who heads the House Judiciary Committee for the Speaker's job. I'm Jackie Quinn. The death toll is over 2 ,000 after severe earthquakes shook Afghanistan Saturday. "W T o p right now. 45 in Farragut Square. And it Rosalyn 47 Laurel 45 degrees here in northwest Washington as we get into the fifties today, it's 11 11. Since it happened. We've been learning that the storming of the U. S Capitol last week. Was not entirely spontaneous. In fact, in some circles, it was a long time coming. Those who adhere to the Cuban on conspiracy theories have been growing in number to the point that some have even been elected to Congress. Joining us live as we take a closer look at this is Washington Post political reporter Isaac Stanley Becker. Isaac. Good to have you with us. Can you give us a sense of how long something like what happened last week at the capital has been talked about among those who follow these conspiracy theories. Thanks for having me that that time in question is a really good one, and it's somewhat hard to answer. Certainly we saw toward the end of last year. Some of the chatter about you no specific plans and events and the targeting of this day when they were going to be certifying the The wind by Joe Biden. But you know, you could even argue that it goes back much, much further, even years back toward the beginning of this cure non conspiracy theory. When there was this anticipation of some type of, you know, final final Storm, as they say in which in which people would rise up they would retake the government and Trump's enemies will be vanquished. This is the fanciful and diluted idea. That some people believe in and this is really what we saw It come to life in the capital last week, and so you could say, in fact that it goes back several years and Isaac as we move ahead here toward the inauguration next week. What are law enforcement Bracing for at this point? Is there more involvement planned? We've seen really start warnings from law enforcement, federal state local officials about possible violence and turmoil over the next set of days, and we've already seen stepped up presence in Washington and across the country in particular its state capitals. I think there's a lot of fear about Events planned for this weekend and then certainly going into Tuesday and then inauguration day itself. So it's hard to say well actually transpire and certainly some of the some of the crackdown and Intensified efforts may hopefully avert some of this, but we certainly saw that it wasn't able to stop what happened last week. We seeing enough from both political parties to push back against these conspiracy theories. We've seen. We're within the Republican Party. There really has been a failure to reckon with the inroads that this conspiracy theory has made into its rank and file and not just its reconciled. But in two members who've been elected to Congress, Marjorie Taylor Greene and born Robert and others have retweeted it slogans and participated and activities. You know adjacent to this And so there have been members on the edges, particularly those retiring who've been willing to denounce this and say it's crazy, but I would not say that the party has had a store. Oh, And full on reckoning with what this means and why this has been incubated in their in their party. Is a great to have you Thank you for breaking this down for us. We appreciate it.
