"Farragut square and 41° in Laurel. Two 40 now on double D TOP, Donald Trump's time in The White House may well become the most written about presidency. Certainly since World War II, books on different aspects of the Trump era have hit the shelves over the past several years, but The New York Times Best Seller, the divider, is the first to take a comprehensive historical look of the Trump presidency in total from his controversial inauguration day in 2017 to the events leading up to January 6th and his second impeachment in 2021. Joining us live to talk about it, the co author of the divider, New York Times chief White House correspondent Peter baker, who wrote the book with his wife and New Yorker columnist Susan glasser, great to have you with us, Peter, thanks. Hey guys, thanks for having me. You know, sometimes it's challenging to find a cohesive narrative, but it doesn't take too long in the book to figure out one of those narratives seems to be the dysfunction. Can you talk about that? Yeah, no, exactly. I mean, look, this is a White House, unlike any that we've ever seen before. One, every White House to some extent has rivalries and tribal fights and so forth. But this is one where they had a conveyor belt of people coming in and out of president who stoke conflict who liked to have his people fighting with each other and then of course took advantage of that because he thought that that made him even more powerful. He once said literally out loud, I like conflict, which is something most presidents try to avoid in their White House. But in this case, you had one where they, you know, there was this camp with the Jared and Ivanka crowd. There was that camp with the traditional Republican crowd. There was another camp with the Steve Bannon and, you know, hard right crowd. Constantly fighting each other from the day one. You also write that many people in the administration hope they could keep mister Trump from his worst impulses, but if they knew his character, his character and his inability to change, why did they agree to work there in the first place? Yeah, that's one of the real underlying themes of this book is the struggles that so many people who went to work for him had with themselves. Where's the line at which they were going to draw beyond which they weren't going to go. And a lot of them convinced themselves that they had to stay or go in the first place in order to keep things from going way off track, that they in fact could make a difference by avoiding the worst of the worst outcomes in their view. Of course, time after time, what you saw was people who thought that finding at some point or another that he lost faith in them, he undercut them. He disagreed with him, and eventually he kicked them out the door. Hey, Peter, you had the opportunity to interview the former president for the book. What did he say? We did. Yeah, a couple times down in Mar-a-Lago. And, you know, what's interesting is to interview him is not he's not a good fact witness. You know what I mean? He's not somebody who you can trust to give you a factual account of what happened, because of course, as we know, he's so prone to saying things that aren't true and are misleading. What is useful in going to see him is just like getting his mindset. And we went to see him, you know, he would be lashing out all the people who used to work for him that he no longer liked. He would lash out at the supposedly rigged election. Every second sentence was rigged election, this rigged election that his mind, of course, with entirely focused on this, we all know to be an untruth, which is that the election was taken away from him. And now we've seen just in the last couple of weeks, I'm talking even about the notion of terminating the constitution when it comes to putting himself back into power. Last 30 seconds here, you combine your own reporting with the work of other journalists, but there had to be a few things you uncovered that were still jaw dropping. What surprised you the most? Oh yeah, that's right. Well, you're right. We did build on the work of a lot of our really amazing colleagues who've done other books and a lot of articles and so forth over the years. But one of the examples though would be his conversation with John Kelly his second chief of staff, where he was mad about the generals who weren't personally loyal to him. What's wrong with you? Effing generals. I want you to be like the generals from Germany and John Kelly says, what do you mean the generals from Germany? And he's talking about the generals from World War II. He says, you mean Hitler's generals? Yeah, they were loyal to him. No, John Kelly said they tried to kill him three times. But it's rather remarkable, of course, to have a president of the United States saying what he wants is the same loyalty. He believes Hitler's general had for him. That's something you don't hear very often. Hey Peter, thanks so much, really appreciate it. Thank you. Have a great day. YouTube. That is New York Times chief White House correspondent Peter baker, co author of the divider. And we'll talk World Cup next. The wait is

"Laurel, farragut square in downtown D.C., we check in at 48. It's 5 40. In other news this afternoon FBI director Christopher wray is, again, voicing concern about the popular social media app TikTok. We, the FBI, do have national security concerns. About the app, it's parent company, is controlled by the Chinese government. And it gives them the potential to leverage the app. And that audio courtesy of the Ford school of public policy race as the FBI fears the Chinese have the ability to control the apps recommendation algorithm which allows them to manipulate content for influencing operations. Now, ray also says China could use the app to collect data on its users for espionage operations. During a Senate hearing back in September, TikTok's COO said the company protects all data from American users and the Chinese government has no access to it. It may be time to have the talk with your kids, but not that talk. We mean telling your kids about how tight your holiday budget is. Greg Merced who runs a business called busy kid and is a certified financial planner says, go ahead, don't be shy. I think they love it. And I think the gift they get it quickly. Percent says you can explain inflation and tight budgets by using everyday experiences. Hey guys, you know, we're filling up the minivan again because I have to drive you to piano practice and soccer and all this stuff. It used to cost us $50 to fill it up and how it crosses 80. "The wharf in D.C., 47 at farragut square and 45 in Laurel now lows tonight in the 30s to around 40°. It's 1140. The White House says President Biden is monitoring the largest Chinese protests in decades. CBS News Ed O'Keefe explains how the rare public descent in China is growing. In a statement, The White House criticized China's zero COVID policy. The statement issued earlier today didn't include any explicit calls for China to stop detaining and harming protesters and journalists. Why not? We continue to stand up and support the right of peaceful protests. And I think we're going to watch this closely and we'll see where things go. President Biden was briefed on the protests, but has not spoken publicly about them. It's part of a cautious approach by the administration as it tries to stabilize the relationship with China, which has grown increasingly tense during his first two years in office. An Iranian general has acknowledged that more than 300 people have been killed in the unrest surrounding nationwide protests in that country. It's the first official word on casualties in two months, but the estimate is considerably lower than the toll reported by human rights activists in Iran. That is a U.S. based group that's been closely tracking the protests since they started in mid September. The group says 451 protesters and 60 security forces have been killed since the start of the unrest and more than 18,000 people detained the protests were sparked by the death of a 22 year old woman being held by the morality police, but it rapidly escalated into calls for the overthrow of Iran's ruling clerics. 7 foreign ministers from European countries all visited Ukraine today. That was the largest show of international solidarity that Ukraine has seen since its war with Russia started in February, and there are signs that Russia may be preparing to leave another key Ukrainian territory. Here's WTO's national security correspondent JJ green. There are reports from inside Ukraine that Russian troops may be planning to leave the zapor Asian nuclear power plant. We have seen some evidence which we get from those Ukrainians who are currently working on this operation nuclear plant. Yuri sack is an adviser to Ukraine's minister of defense. So what exactly have they seen? So the way in which the Russian occupiers have been behaving on the nuclear power plant during the last couple of days suggests that they were planning to leave. But he says Russia has played this game before. Then we had this statement from Russian authorities who are saying that this is not the case. So what Russia is trying to do is keep Ukraine off guard so that Ukraine won't know what to do. When in reality, Russia really is most likely planning to eventually evacuate that plan. That's national security correspondent JJ green. Straight ahead on WTO in sports a blowout at Capital One arena. 1143. Hi, I'm Frank.
