"Farragut Square and 36 Laurel. Brought to you by long fence 20% off savings on fences, decks and papers. Go toe long fence dot com and schedule your free estimate today. It's 8 11 more concerning news about the economy this week as the latest numbers showed that America's employers barely added jobs last month comes as President Biden calls for quick passage of his $1.9 trillion relief package. Let's bring in Paul Brandis on Skype. He's a columnist for USA Today and Dow Jones Jones Market Watch and also the author of several books on the presidency. So Paul some hiring is happening. Who's doing it? Well, hardly anybody is hiring. In fact, John and of those 49,000 jobs that were added last month, only 6000 were in the private sector 6000. All the rest of them were in state and federal Government jobs and we're still you know, this pandemic is one year in now we're still about 10 million jobs below where we were a year ago 10 million, and here's a little bit of history for you. Since Donald Trump was president for most of January, yesterday's data goes on his record, 2020 was the worst year in terms of job growth in absolute terms. Since 1940 over his entire four years in office. The economy on a net basis lost jobs, the first time since Herbert Hoover nearly a century ago. What about in our area? What's the jobs picture like here? Well, it's worse in the D C. It usually is 7.9% well above the national average, which is 6.3%, and that's where it is in Maryland, 6.3%, Virginia. It's usually best of 4.9% to hear in the Commonwealth, as usual. Propping things up here is the federal government. There is some, but not much private sector hiring going on elsewhere. We got to get this pandemic under control. All right. Turning to the rescue package. The president's now conceding that a key element of his plan hiking the minimum wage to $15 an hour was unlikely to become law. Why is that? Well, he told Norah O'Donnell of CBS yesterday that it's probably not likely to survive $15 an hour is what he wanted. Look, this is simply not going to get enough votes. Even from some Democrats. You think it might be a little bit too much money not necessarily related to the pandemic, either. So I think that's one thing that's a Gonna go? I mean, like Joe Biden is sort of a kind of taking a page from the Reagan playbook here. Where is you Get 80% of what you want and come back. Maybe for the rest of little bit later. You can't get everything that you want right out of the gate. I think that's his view here. Alright. Thanks, Paul. By the way, you get to say, I told you so about game stop its stock was way down this past week. 80% from last week. I mentioned that people gonna lose a lot of money really fast, and that's what happened to you got to be a very careful about these kind of situations. Once again, That is analysis from U. S A today and Dow Jones columnist Paul Brandis. A stretch of pedestrian and bike path closes down today, the District Department of Transportation will close the sidewalk and trail connection on the west Side of South Capitol Street southwest between Potomac Avenue Southwest and 1st 1st Sterling Avenue southeast, including the West Side. Wide sidewalk on the Frederick Douglass Memorial.

First on the Beltway in Virginia on the outer loop coming at Annandale before Braddock Road, we'd had one broken down. It was a big truck. Apparently, that has been safely moved over to the shoulder. You're in good shape out of Stafford, one in 95 north bound 66 so far good at a Gainesville. If you're riding all the way into Rosslyn, the Roosevelt Bridge is open. Now. Inbound. Still in question is the inbound 14th Street Bridge as we watch the cameras. You're still so much cleanup to go on. "W T o p right now. 45 in Farragut Square. And it Rosalyn 47 Laurel 45 degrees here in northwest Washington as we get into the fifties today, it's 11 11. Since it happened. We've been learning that the storming of the U. S Capitol last week. Was not entirely spontaneous. In fact, in some circles, it was a long time coming. Those who adhere to the Cuban on conspiracy theories have been growing in number to the point that some have even been elected to Congress. Joining us live as we take a closer look at this is Washington Post political reporter Isaac Stanley Becker. Isaac. Good to have you with us. Can you give us a sense of how long something like what happened last week at the capital has been talked about among those who follow these conspiracy theories. Thanks for having me that that time in question is a really good one, and it's somewhat hard to answer. Certainly we saw toward the end of last year. Some of the chatter about you no specific plans and events and the targeting of this day when they were going to be certifying the The wind by Joe Biden. But you know, you could even argue that it goes back much, much further, even years back toward the beginning of this cure non conspiracy theory. When there was this anticipation of some type of, you know, final final Storm, as they say in which in which people would rise up they would retake the government and Trump's enemies will be vanquished. This is the fanciful and diluted idea. That some people believe in and this is really what we saw It come to life in the capital last week, and so you could say, in fact that it goes back several years and Isaac as we move ahead here toward the inauguration next week. What are law enforcement Bracing for at this point? Is there more involvement planned? We've seen really start warnings from law enforcement, federal state local officials about possible violence and turmoil over the next set of days, and we've already seen stepped up presence in Washington and across the country in particular its state capitals. I think there's a lot of fear about Events planned for this weekend and then certainly going into Tuesday and then inauguration day itself. So it's hard to say well actually transpire and certainly some of the some of the crackdown and Intensified efforts may hopefully avert some of this, but we certainly saw that it wasn't able to stop what happened last week. We seeing enough from both political parties to push back against these conspiracy theories. We've seen. We're within the Republican Party. There really has been a failure to reckon with the inroads that this conspiracy theory has made into its rank and file and not just its reconciled. But in two members who've been elected to Congress, Marjorie Taylor Greene and born Robert and others have retweeted it slogans and participated and activities. You know adjacent to this And so there have been members on the edges, particularly those retiring who've been willing to denounce this and say it's crazy, but I would not say that the party has had a store. Oh, And full on reckoning with what this means and why this has been incubated in their in their party. Is a great to have you Thank you for breaking this down for us. We appreciate it.
