"Later we get an offer. Acquisition offer for one hundred million dollars which of course we took in those days a lot. You'd be full not to take it. So after that. John google and other success. I mean had a string of successes and i thought i was. You know talent job. Step joe bean and so with all that hoover's are decide. Okay now i want to do another startup. i forget raising three million dollars. I'm going to raise a lot. You know so. We raised twenty five dollars and And now remember you know. We raise the first round from sequoia you know the the best species in silicon valley and i thought great we we have. It made sequoia things. We're going to be successful is going to be successful. But here's what happens right. So the and the publisher work in a very different way than the enterpreneurs and the authors. Vc guests to make many bats and some of them will work and of them will not work director with the with a publisher. They have a lot of eggs in the basket and they know from past experience at some of the will make up for the losses One google For a sequoia mix up pretty much for every single failure or if not investment. That not succeed and i'm not exaggerating here right. So but here's the problem as the interpreter or as the author. You're at the other end. You'll have one and one basket right. So when my v sees a who invested twenty five million dollars in my stop that did not work so to them. It's a minor loss right. It's a disappointment right. You because five years of my life michael. Five years of his life for all of our employees and people that joined us hoping to succeed. It was a lot of time in a lot of commitment so vc's and publishers. The play a very different game. Their goal is to put out as many books as possible that they have a certain threshold for doing tasks but they can both afford to be less not less stringent with their testing any Or go to abc said. Here's my idea. And i said okay before we give you funding. I won't desire than david. Hinson decided to another we see and said sure come on board enough doesn't work you know we. We invest in. The team will find something else. They're going to go with the second. See so that's why you cannot. You have to assure enterpreneur you're playing a very very different game than are on the other side. It's fascinating because i mean the whole premise of this this Yearbook that i wrote was the idea that being one of the greatest insurance policies in a creative careers to be prolific to write as much as possible to create as much as possible. Because then you know even though you have like you said you know you have one basket one egg that helps you create multiple baskets in multiple eggs in in some way and i just noticed that pattern with a lot of creative so that that's a really i'd never thought about it that way. Let's let's before we go streaming now because that's very important point so you you you catch on fast right. So that's exactly this whole point of my book and my and my tools and my methodology. Become your own. Vc's how do we see succeed because they invest in a lot of ideas right now. Fantozzi ideas per year. Well how entrepreneur succeed they need. You need to invest and test also a lot of ideas until you find one that works but usually what happens because it happened to me because it's human nature you have. You tried to solve a problem. You come up with an idea you fall in love with that idea and best meeting the real world. You applied confirmation bias. Love is blind. So your -ssume that your idea works and you decide not to test put all your passion on that one egg inside that you don't fall in love with the right fall in love with space that you want to address with the problem that you want to solve a fully love with the problem flirt with the ideas in other words interview and test maniacs and find out the ones that's actually give you good feedback so for your conference right. You coulda fried different titles in different locations in defer different Price bonded different focused on rights. And that's what. You really should do pretty much with everything that you do. If you won't vote failure having said that this is very important sometimes. The world needs the crazy people. We've formula for not failing so if you take money from you or you have investors. Don't want to fail right you know. I'm so glad that there are the crazy people in the world. it said. Look i know it makes no sense. I you know i'm just gonna go out and do it. You know i call it like the promethean enterpreneur. Right they're going to they're going to make it or dot and i love the people and in fact some of the things i do are in that things i don't know i don't need the valuation. Somebody in the world needs to do this. Whether or not they can guarantee success so i wanna make sure that there is a balanced I be very clear if it's important to succeed because you have investors because you know some people depend on it your family on it then all of my book with which really flip around the odds from failure right. Instead of ten twenty percent. Chance of success. I give you an eighty to ninety percents of success but sometimes in your life should have been successful. Take the risks. Newsome is in otherwise life gets a little bit too boring and predictable so in this market success equation. You you actually talk about failure. Being a failure to launch failure due to operations and failure due to premise. Can you define what those are fours and expand on them. So when i you know the way to beat failures to staff fate or understand it. So when i started to work on prototyping and these ideas i the saturday let me look at a lot of companies that have failed and look hundreds of companies in thousands of industries and see the techniques that teach would have helped them out so the first thing. I did a look at a lot of failures of both companies and individual product. Now's able to put them into three buckets with the acronym flop failure due to launch operation or fra premise failure to launch. Usually your marketing is not very good. The market doesn't know about your product So that's that's clearly the now going to bite now failure to ration- means that you're building work right so maybe two restaurant in the food is awfully snap scratch. Yeah and it's a book and his. Portia did they say the third one is. P in. Flop is failure due to premise. That means that it doesn't matter how well you build the product how well you marketed. There's nothing that will save. Nothing will make it a success. The product is what i call the wrong. It's on the right is a product that if competently executed will succeed in the market the wrong it is a product that no new amount of marketing. Fair fireworks or engineering excellence is going to make it succeed and most failures are sorry. That's lifespan eighty. To ninety percent of the failures can be attributed to people building the wrong product. Not airing presenting building or marketing just built a product that the market does not care about. But i think this is one of the things that i really appreciated. The you said. And i remember. I think i tweeted this. The this quote opinions about an idea or not data not even close opinions or subjective bias judgments their guesses thrown out without much thought evidence and critically with no skin in the game. If an idea spends too much time in what you call thought land it gets wrapped in a fuzzy ball of unsubstantiated off the cuff judgments and i think that you gave you know. I think all four of the the three. You mentioned confirmation bias earlier. I think that you know bat is one of the we talked about the skin in the game problem.

"Just things that the enke's front office opted not to do for whatever reason and then put put their backs up against the wall to gary cole. Eighty-five million more dollars in the next the next highest contract and there's going to be expectations come at the contract. That's also might be with it too is because you know you're paying this guy all this money you know. The fan base is going to be holding them accountable. Just based on the dollar. Sign the that that you've given to him The the problems don't aren't entirely with his performance. It's just when we need certain performances. We don't get them. And then when you look at garrett cole and the amount of money were paying him it doesn't really compare like jacob degrom. In my opinion there's the gap between jacob degrom and garrick goal is i it's indescribable. Not the same. Not even it's not even more and that's what troubles may because that. You can't have that disparity between the supposed picturing in the league and and your ace if you wanna be a world series contender if you're ace is the highest paid pitcher. So that's where my frustration lies. My frustrations are not with a great pitcher. Also nice guy. So i enjoy having them on my team. It is continually sad and mets fans really needs to drop the coal versus degrom thing because we never wanted them whenever you thought it was a thing. No it's not close. No yankee fan thinks it's closed fantozzi. What's crazy but it's also it wasn't ridiculous for like mlb's graphics department when the whole two hundred twenty five million dollar deal to be like. Hey who's the as the or jacob degrom or this extremely expensive i on the really popular yankees and then you know what the answer is. It's great today like it's not insane like none of it's crazy..

This is Bob Solter were in discussion with team chamois on our program. She's executive director of the fresh air fund fresh air dot ORG, the website and I raised a couple of questions or issues, one to address with you before we opposed for Pete's update and a few messages, they're one of them is the idea of. For people who are interested, maybe have some abilities that they think they might be able to share with you in the way of volunteering. What kind of opportunities are there? Thank you. So we I talk about our volunteering in three ways. And I think of it as time I think if they're just talent, and I think if it is treasurer, and so we offer opportunities for folks who as individuals might be interested in tutoring or mentoring in our programs during the academic school year starting in September. And so one can if they're local based come up online to fresh air dot org as you've just mentioned and tell us that they're interested in volunteering. And so in our offices in New York City in midtown every night of the week, we have adults come in and work with our students are middle school and high school students helping them. You know, go through with supporting their math skills or reading, skills are writing skills, or, you know, on a variety of levels, and then because we help support our young people in the college, connecting process, we actually do a mentoring program on Wednesday nights, and it is a really powerful model where three to four volunteers are in a room with several students, and you sort of create this sort of many community sort of called house feeling where the mentors are helping our young people think about college. Think about life. Think about how does one write an essay, what do you look for? What are your personal skills? Do you wanna stay home? Do you wanna go away? And so there's lots of ways if you've got time to volunteer we'd love to have you, if you're part of a corporate entity and you wanna get your corporate team involved are. We're gonna say shin has a couple of staff member. Who are focused on that corporate social engagement work and again, it's everything from being camp counselor for a day, and coming up to our camps, or helping at our departures. We have amazing support from many corporate entities. And so those are ways to get involved into on tier. We have a junior counsel. So again, that's that's very welcome news this morning, we're talking with rob Nelson. The co creator of big league chew about kids and having fun in sports. It sounds like such an innocent the naive topic. But in fact, it's extraordinarily important because I do worry I keep hearing from a lot of coaches, and parents that they worry that their kids aren't having fun playing sports, and we're taking your calls at one eight seven seven three three seven sixty six sixty six Nelly. Let's continue our calls. Let's go to Edward and sandy hook Edward good morning. You're on the fan. Hey rik. How are you? Good. How are you? Pretty good. Love your show. Thank you a topic. Just want to say about the kids having fun. I coach my son for about for money was about. You know, maybe fourteen and then he went to high school. Yeah. He started out as a freshman. Got in started shortstop and everything. Right. And after that. He said, I'm not having any fun anymore. I want to shut it down. Okay. Did he tell you? Why was that fun? Just because of the coaches, and I I don't know he just he just said he wasn't fun anymore. So we just stopped where Edward. That's exactly what we're talking about this morning. Because obviously, that's what happens the kids get to a point. And thank you for the call. And the fact is that the kids get to a point they say, it's not fun. And once that element is gone once it disappears. It's very very hard to get back into their life. And they just walk away from sports, and it's disappointing. And it's it's heartbreaking for a parent particularly somebody like Edward, obviously. Coach's kid for ten years. It's just what we're trying to do and make sure that it's an enjoyable experience. So the kid when the seas once he's an ends. They can't wait to come back the following year and play again because it was the lingering memory is one of enjoyment and fun. Let's let's go to our friend Jack Smith and over in fairlawn, Jack good morning. I know that fun is a key. Component of what you teach your kids. It definitely is once again, great, great, topics. You know, it's funny because one of the things that I think about all the time is that. And I think that that baseball camp that ED's doing or what's your guests name, rob Nelson? Rob rob is excellent. Because what you're actually doing is teaching kids how to have fun, and it's pretty sad when we have to teach kids how to have fun, you know, in my opinion, and you can talk about this topic for hours and hours like everyone of your topics. But the funny thing is is that the parents set the goals for the kids they don't allow kids to set their own goals. And when you're setting goals for your kids and the kids not happy, and he's trying to please your she's trying to please you he's going through or he's going through the motions. And then all of a sudden one day when they realize you know, what I don't want this they walk away. And when you do not allow them to have fun when coaches don't allow practices can be fun. You know, one of the things I say to everyone in my kids that I've coached is. Are you having fun? It's something that you want to continue to do because you're enjoying it. Not because you want to try to get a scholarship for make the forest me or anything like that. But are you having fun doing what you're doing? And you know, what Rick? You know, your shows bring out all of this. And you know, and we always look for solutions. But I think the two solutions are exactly what Rob's doing because his camp is actually teaching kids how to continue to have fun or to have fun. And if it's not fun find something else. I know. Have to say, I couldn't agree more. And I think that is the focal point as you said, it's kind of a little bit discouraging and disheartening that we teach our kids how to have fun playing sports. But that is the state of the art today when it comes to us sports, Jack. Thank you for the call talk to you soon. That's that's what we're talking about. Here. We're telling our kids who have to take the time to explain to them. How to how to have fun? You know? Yeah. I think it's really interesting to me. I was remember my mom saying to my brothers. And I go out go out and play catch. Just go out and do something. It wasn't like we got a we got a tutor for your something. Like, there's just get out of the house. Just go play ball. Genie was great at that. You know? We were lucky to have that experience. Hey, before I forget, I do speaking of having fun. And obviously, we know in the last week or so major league baseball is trying to introduce a whole raft of new rule changes. I know that one of the things you do for fun is to try to think of new ways to invent a re recreate rules for the game. And just the other day. You told me that you have a new idea to reinvent the infield fly rule, which of course. Anybody's watch a little league game or his coach a little league game or high school game the infield. Fly rule is a complicated. Concept for a lot of people. But you've not an idea, and I want you to get to our listeners before we time this morning. Tell us your new idea for the infield fly rule and says since it's just to be genius. Tell us about it. I can't I can't believe they give me the podium to do. The I am fly role was created to prevent the defense. The team in the field from executing a tainted double-play right leading a ball drop and getting a runner at third and then a second base. So it's favors the defense a pop fly goes in the air. If it's not caught the batter is out. No matter. What happens? So I tweet that and said suppose when an empire calls infield fly the rule book says any ball game to be an infield fly is simply a foul ball. No matter where it lands, which means if the defense makes the catch the. Out with the defense doesn't make the catch the ball. It's the ground. No matter where it lands. It's basically a do over again goes back to that concept of sun. So you're punishing defense for not making a routine play. But the thing about that. It's simplicity is that now the infield fly rule will slightly favor. The Chiba at bat rather than the team in the field. So that's a fifty fifty tossup anyway. So for the sake of simplicity. Any infield fly is a foul ball. So when the ball hits the ground the battle goes back and hitch gets an extra strike if it was a one on one count. Now, it's a one and two cats. There's a bit of a punishment there? You don't have to spend hours of practice time explaining the rule to your players. They're just say now, it's a foul ball go back, and you can explain that you don't want. The defense can get an unfair advantage to make a bogus double play. And it's actually did jacket was for the infield fly the simplest way to do. It is to call it a foul ball. You might remember that playoff game Chipper Jones last game or an infield. Fly was called the ball hit the ground runner. Scrambled all over the place. The fans in Atlanta were so I write they threw stuff on the field. It took them a half an hour to get stuff off the field. My real makes it easier for the buyers and easier for the players and the fans. Okay. He didn't catch it to do over again. It's in the spirit of fun. But also in the spirit of speeding of play and keeping things simple. When I tried to explain the infield fly rule to eleven year old kids on my cat. It's almost like they want to go play lacrosse. Complicated. It's simple make it. Well, what one-stop shopping? I mean, I've tried to, you know, look at this at evaluated and dissect it, and I'm thinking, you know, what actually makes a lot of sense. And it's very simple understand. It's it's an infield fly situation at the defense. The the team in the field makes the catch the batteries out. Nobody advances fine. If they don't make the catch. It's just foul ball. Nobody has to worry about tagging up or moving progressing it. Just a foul ball. The term you use which again is a throwback. It's a do over do over. No kids today. Thanks to instant replay or video. They don't know what to do over is. But again, it's all part of fun. And it does if major league baseball is going to go through the process here of trying to reevaluate the rules in order to speed the game up. I like this concept a lot. I think as you said it's a much easier to explain to eleven year old or to a parent in the stands as well. I think it's a great idea. And I applaud you. Yes. People in baseball heard this I on the sports edge. That's Lucia should reinvent the infield fly roll my goodness. Let's go to go to Pete in Marlborough peak. Good morning, you're on the fan. Good morning yesterday. I'm really glad to first of all thank you for taking my call. Really glad you guys are talking about the subject. I grew up in the Sydney sixties we did play. Like, you were saying, you know, there were no foul lines. And and then basically basis where we're basically a spots in the grass that were worn out. Are are lying or online between basis. We're about twenty five feet long twenty to twenty five feet long. The point. I'm trying to think of who made it fun. We we had a bunch of kids in the area. Lot of us were were relatives. There were boys and girls, we all played as a matter of fact, this is the real reason I'm calling about my my cousin was born with Dorf ISM. And although she could walk and kind of run we allowed her to play. But what we did with the rules with that talking about rules was if Patti hit a fly ball. She was out. If Patti hit the ball on the ground to automatically gets the first base. Kinda hit the ground ball, basically loaded. Here's an RBI. We gotta run. I love that. We we made we made the rules. Everybody could play with fun and exactly that doesn't happen today. And I just wanna thank you guys. I thought you'd enjoy hearing that little story. But that's what we did as kids in the sixties Hudson valley Pete. That's exactly what we're talking about. I thank you for telling us about Patty and Nellie again, the beauty the passion the enjoyment that kids have when they have their. They're allowed to use their imagination to reinvent the rules. Not just with baseball or softball approach. Any sport that that I fear that ability that talent that creativity that seems to have been pushed pushed away or push out of the picture these as because we have all these former leagues starting at very very early ages. And of course, the the thrust to to be competitive into the play and specialized sports, but we that's that's to me is the source of all the fun and enjoy. The kids have today. I mean, it's as simple as that. So let you go. Tell us again, if people are interested if they're going to be out on the island this summer, they want to let the Southampton camp how they can track. You at what rob Nelson big league chew dot com. Is that correct? That's great door. The town of Southampton. The field this red creek park in Hampton bays. A really simple, no frills program..
