"Here. He was like millions of people are coming. Now it's completely different. Slovakia's Catholics, it seems, are still trying to get the measure of Pope Francis. Too liberal. For some conservatives, too conservative. For some liberals, the Catholic Church is by definition a broad one. Perhaps this visit will shed more light. On just where the current pope stands. I still hear Cameron reporting from Bratislava there. This is news date from the BBC World Service a couple of headlines for you. Now the U. S. Secretary of State, Antony Blinken has been defending the withdrawal from Afghanistan in the first official testimony to Congress since the pullout. He'll be Speaking to Senate tomorrow as well, and a human rights group is urging the British foreign secretary to block the appointment of a Rwandan diplomat in London over his alleged role in detaining a government critic also We're talking quite a lot about climate change today. Little bit earlier, You heard Peter Aquatic talking about life in Nigeria under in the 50 degrees, And I mean, if that wasn't bad enough, we're talking more generally about the stress involved in climate change as well. How it alarms us all report on that in the next hour. First, Let's get sports with Isaac Fannin. Yes, the South Africa reportedly looking to put their hat into the ring to host next year's Club World Cup, which features the winners of all the continents around the world's top competitions, including Chelsea, of course, won the Champions League and we won the African version. Here's a piece global sports correspondent Rob Harris, the president of the South African Football Association, damage or dance, saying that they're planning talks with FIFA late this week, particularly at a meeting He's due to have with fat. Mr Morra, the FIFA secretary general in Lagos, and they're going to work out just what is required because This is at late notice because the tournament was originally due to be in Japan. But due to the coronavirus situation in and around Tokyo Japanese Football Association has pulled out of hosting the tournament in terms of South Africa. We saw the British and Irish Lions tour earlier on some of that whose game took place behind closed doors. They had their own issues with Covid. Will they be in a position to host it with fans? That's one of the big challenges in South Africa. Actually going ahead with this bed. It needs the government support because as things stand there aren't Spectators allowed in stadiums. They're still looking at the South African government side, whether or not they bring in things like vaccine passports. It's been quite interesting. The reaction even just put in the news out on social media today that South Africa were interested in bidding suddenly lead to a lot of South Africans tweeting about that they'd like to get the vaccines quicker and just so they could get the chance to see the lights of Chelsea potentially coming to South Africa, although actually Chelsea's presence does actually pose A challenge to you because South Africa still being on the English red list, so anyone returning from there is required to self isolate in hotels for 10 days, so that's another barrier that would have to sort of change. Although that readily situation is constantly changing course. South Africa does have the stadiums it would be Coming 11 years after the World Cup being staged there said, be a good chance for them and also a way of actually spread in this tournament around the world. It's event that's often been held in Morocco in the past. It's been in Brazil way back being used to seeing yet in the area and then nest in Qatar recently, too, so it's a bit of an unloved tournament, probably in parts of the world used to its sort of limited appeal is slightly strange, given the fact obviously, is only seven teams taking part. But there would be a particular reason why they'd be of interest to South Africa and for ending in the club World Cup there and particularly because of the CAF president, Patrice Motsepe, who also happens to be the owner of them. Sundowns, who are the current South African champions, and the club World Cup features not only the six continental champions but also the national champion of the House country. So there we go with that would be a place potentially as things stand for the Sundowns and for the club of the CAF president who is also very close to fever. That would be a very Interesting turn up for the book in terms of Arrivals or any other countries putting up their hands. Potentially hostess tournament or Saudi Arabia have expressed an interest in hosting this, they did say last week publicly, they believe there might be an alternative already on the cards and sound the Arabia You think that actually aligned with where FIFA thinking at the moment in terms of a lot of their planning at the FIFA president, Gianni Infantino is in Saudi Arabia seemingly quite often has been seen. A couple of times in the last year, at least with the Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in Riyadh and Saudi Arabia, very keen to accelerate the growth of football and to bring more football tournaments to Saudi Arabia, particularly the World Cup. Eventually down the line, we think as well they could be launching a bid potentially for 2030. Taking a tournament like that to Saudi Arabia would, of course, run into conflict with FIFA's human rights policies if they are abiding by them, given the deep concerns about rights violations in Saudi Arabia, so actually, perhaps at this stage and looking elsewhere might be less concerning to the rights groups. This situation in terms of the conduct of FIFA, But certainly there has been an interest in Saudi Arabia, which actually is really on the floor front and trying to bring more sports in the country. We have a decision well, FIFA still looking into all this This is obviously going to need to actually Acts not so quickly because we still actually don't know, for instance, who the South American champions are at this stage and other titles still to be awarded. So it's not as if their fans are necessarily Larry booking any trips. So much of the focus at FIFA at the moment on this study into the World Cup being held every two years, and it's going around.

Yes right well. Another example of a company. That really didn't buy naked in China is over now. Hoover was a fired. Its business was a fire by. Dd A local Chinese company. That's leader in ridesharing. And interestingly enough then think happened to over in South East Asia grabbed up so I think I think the interesting but I am not sure if remember correctly but I was listening in Financial Uber. Not long ago and I think You over Helda like CA- joint venture Being China like they sold the back in anyway at some part of the controlling the joint. Bank SCHRAMM naturally In as in Asia like in Russia like in China but was definitely interesting case on your side like they got an investment stake in indeed the local China member correct Eight send look on bunny but like the China then day. They have a stake in the in the Chinese Chinese interesting all right. So we're going to be a will be interesting to see how these third now we are not in the in the coming years and Y'all every business right now in China's being hit By the corona virus. Yeah of course. Of course I guess the Demonstra now it's you guess is now. We're only seeing the beginning of it. Now Yeah in like The looking at the current tech giant's instead at anyone which is upcoming that might become actually next a solar power in China that you're looking at well. Look I mean I think fight dances certainly Been very aggressive and innovative I think pin duo Joel. Saint saying it already went public into Joe already went. Public dance is not public yet. Xiaomi has A lot more Runway to grow internationally I think Dj I the Drum Company is already the world leader in drones on it's it's been Very promising it's not public yet. and The Roosevelt Company and the innovations out of that company ace insurance in remarkable interesting. A look at a check them out and Yeah do you have a intending? I guess so. Of course they're the people that would be leading those businesses that people to hold as well but we ever slaughter a key people to hold from China's exceeding that didn't interest in old sovereign perspective of of museums people of the Western world other people in China. Yeah like business people that eating following now. I'll yeah well other fellow. Who'S BEHIND SHAMI? Lays ZONE IS A Super Angel Investor and Serial Entrepreneur It put a high up And the yeah. He's Kinda like there's hard to find somebody who could be the next Jack Mall But there are definitely a lot of innovators Coming up with Y Y and business models in China that are gaining traction But you know the big personality people on like Jack Ma on not so many of those Because entrepreneurs tend to be as frankly tech entrepreneurs tend to be You know sitting you know coding late. They're like to code liked their engineers or not. You know CELEB- celebrity type personalities now. So that's kind of difficult to pinpoint one person that you know. I think is like a superstar Tech Titan. Coming Out Maybe on a although he's probably already made it absolutely it's it's really a new use company and the like for for anyone we go also willing. Actually those business with China What do you have any suggestion on the steps that that we should take notice actually deal or like Windy in China's. Where is the situation right now? Would you suggest of course will happen right now with a with a coronavirus but in general like in business? Do you have any suggestions for anyone? Lean to start a business wasting what we China right Well it started as a you need to go there for several and see for yourself. What's going on And then make the right connections and have the right ardor on the ground. So that's very very important to know the Marquette and to work with people who know the market locally mice mice localize in as you must adapt to the market and you must be able to work very quickly and implement things New ideas before competitors and keep keep ahead. I have to be able to work. Really hard and You know work pretty much round the clock to compete with these Chinese north or You know we're all IX. Yeah absolutely we'll greet you and for anyone who is going to be listening these You you have to read the tech type of China because it's a it's a great book and You know once again. "Scene and Taking his place. Is there like assaulted playbook or template to that phrase inside China's following the in investing in India or just like pouring money you know holding the the trend of Ted Growing the you know the the economy. Well yeah I mean There's a huge push By the Chinese Tech Titans to go outside of China into Southeast Asia and in India and many of the business models are being copied For instance the motto of Ride Sharing The model a bike sharing the Mobile payments the ECOMMERCE A lot of these areas Are Getting copied on an in India's into by innovating in his own right making his own localized Apps and versions but These business models of you know e Commerce Social Commerce ridesharing They're all being copied and These tech titans are helping to make that happen because they're acquiring local companies in these regions in Southeast Asia and India and then helping those companies to scale up even further. Yeah and then in the book you'll talk about I think it's called like many many programs like sort of bundle shopping gaming. The Lights said of his interesting dating these something that we have noticed a like. I'm used to at least in the Western world. Be More about Andy's this does something developed By we chat and Again it's a it's really creating a many shop within we chat so that you can have a branded store and users on recheck and just go directly to that brandit store and shop there So that's an interesting development as well And it's like walking down main street in the past and being able.

"You know that you'll be looking. Yes sure okay. Well definitely finance by dances the maker of Tik Tok which is hugely popular. Now that whole fifteen second video ath- Agra's really popularized in China and by dance though I think this Idea of entertaining very sure. Self-created video That can be shared easily Is an idea. That's traveled very fast and has taken off big time in the US And you know it's a new model that We didn't happy for. At least it wasn't popular icy or in other markets and gooding. Us Now tick Tock Is showing the way an interesting thing about talk as well as there's the uncensored version or US market on now? There is another version of Tik Tok which is available in China and of course ally in China as we know the Internet is censored so it's censored in China by the Tick Tock version in the. Us On is a different model yet. I think Make seven interesting At the business model long before we can be over a year ago I think off I find it very interesting for several reasons fueled those. He's dental I one of the Chinese tech companies that He's a dominating outside China. He's getting the end. Also you know e-. Gaba Delta will sustain described by Dan says is multi billion dollar company. And you know there. There are many other things interesting by the platform which I think it's a completely different from the platform that we used to in terms of social media and I think it's really a new way of producing content as about especially could using capture as heading. The is the most important thing. Also that facebook launched of Kobe. Tokyo knows pretty fair. The chance located ten. What do you think about this? Well no I wrote about that in my book. Tech TITANS OF CHINA Facebook's coffee it's called Lasso and it's really only access through facebook so it hasn't gained the traction that ticked off has and and I think You know these ten basically copied it entirely and That's pretty well known Look I wrote about this whole tick tock phenomena in an article really very comprehensive article in Harvard Business Review so if your listeners wanted to take a look at that might be interesting for them absolutely El Al appointed upon this out and then what are some of the that the Chinese a tech companies are falling now so recently fe inc about the like Baiju or Alibaba. What are some of the things that companies are usually embracing On right now well they have been investing heavily in a I. Artificial intelligence Both of them by do Very aggressively going into a and a Thomas that goals and Alibaba. I getting into AI as well So I think that is probably the binary area that oath of them are investing heavily. I think Mobile payments is another area that both of them have invested heavily in as well So by do not really commerce so much but that's a that's the forte for Alibaba so each one has their own area by do research originally Alibaba with e connors originally and ten cents with gaining messaging. What's interesting about these tech? Titans is how they powered up and got into all kinds of new sectors today and they have become these giants that Go across many industry sectors and they've also gone outside China I Looking pretty much the. Us and investing heavily in US tech companies and tech startups. But now not so much given the whole issues around the oversight out China investments in the US by Washington DC and also the cackles restrictions on Chinese money going Going outside outside China. So now what? You're starting to see these tech. Titans are moving more money. Investing more heavily into Southeast Asia So that's a new trend watched yet. I think You mentioned the Book Jenny. Stick giants are investing in other countries like Presencia which I think it's very interesting because Ladies had anything that you wanted to mention about the strategy those companies are using countries like senior like Africa where they're investing Also right. Oh Yeah India's a huge market and there's a lot of activity now focused on India. China dealmaking is down. The numbers are down and now India a surge Venture Capital Investment and start affect us. So I think it's Indians time coming up which has been coming for a long time and I wrote about in my Second Book Startup Asia which was published back in two thousand and eleven I highly trend but now We're starting to see this really half and that India's becoming.

Thank you for joining me this conversation. Oh Yeah I'm glad to be here so Was Great Reading. Your Book and I think it's a great for anyone restrained to understand the tech scene right now in in there in China so would go way interest in all Indo Chinese tech giants in the in the first place drove it fees as well when I started going to China as a journalist and I met many of the leading entrepreneurs like Jack Ma and Robin Lee by doing Alibaba and the story was really exciting and I just kept covering it as a journalist and writing many articles and then that led to a microscope. Silicon Dragon and then now my latest book. Tech TITANS OF CHINA. Yup Interesting in the in the in the book you actually talk about you know in in the Western world. Of course we have the set the companies. That are dominating right now. We have a facebook Amazon netflix angle but in in abukasis about the bat or like the the template of the Chinese companies that have the meeting the market right now. "Fannin, and it's the wretched of the earth. This is from the chapter on national culture on page one forty five it's sort of reads like Thomas Paine actually each generation must discover its mission fulfill it or betray it in relative passivity, the underdeveloped countries preceding generations of simultaneously resisted, the insidious agenda colonialism and pave the way for the emergence of the current struggles. Now that we are in the heat of combat. We must shed the habit of decrying the efforts of our forefathers or feigning incomprehension at their silence or passiveness they fought as best they could with the weapons they possessed at the time and if they struggled dot reverberate throughout the international arena. The reasons should be attributed not so much to a lack of heroism but to a fundamentally different international situation. More than one colonized subject had to say we've had enough more than one tribe had to rebel more than one peasant. Volt had to be quelled more than one demonstration had to be repressed for us to stand firm certain of our victory for those who are determined for those of us who are determined to break the back of colonialism. Our historic mission is to authorize every revolt every desperate act and every attack aborted or drowned in blood in this chapter will analyze the fundamental issue with the legitimate claim to a nation, the political party that mobilizes the people, however is little concerned with this issue of legitimacy political parties are concerned solely with daily reality. And it is in the name of this reality in the name of this immediacy, which influences the present and future of men and women that they make their call to action. The political party may very well, speak of the nation in emotional terms that it is primarily interested in getting the people who are listening to understand that they must join in the struggle, if they quite simply want to exist. We now know that in the first phase of the national struggle colonialism attempts to defuse nationalist demands by manipulating economic doctrine. At the first sign of a dispute colonialism feigns comprehension by acknowledging with ostentatious. Humility the territory is suffering from serious underdevelopment. The requires major social and economic reforms, and it is true. This certain spectacular message measures such as the opening of work sites for the unemployed ear their delay. The formation of a national consciousness by a few years, but sooner or later colonialism realizes it is incapable of achieving program of socioeconomic reforms that would satisfy the aspirations of the colonized masses. Even when it comes to filling their bellies colonialism proves to be inherently, powerless. The colonial state very quickly discovers that any attempt to disarm the national parties at a purely economic level would be tantamount to practicing in the colonies what it did not want to do in its own territory. And it is no coincidence. That today the doctrine of Carter ISM is on the rise. Just about everywhere. Cartier Carter ears bitter disillusionment with Francis stubborn determination to retain ties with people it will have to feed. Whereas so many French citizens are in dire straits reflects colonialism's inability to transform itself into a non-partisan aid program and once again, no need to waste time. Repeating better to go hungry with dig dignity than to fill one ones fill in slavery on the contrary. We must persuade ourselves. The colonialism is incapable of procuring for colonized people the material conditions likely to make them forget their quest for dignity. Once colonialism is understood where it's social reform tactics would lead it back from the old reflexes of adding police. Reinforcements dispatching troops and establishing a regime of terror better suited to its interests and its psychology. Within the political parties or rather parallel to them? We find the culture class of colonized intellectuals. The recognition of a national culture and its right to exist represent their favorite stomping ground, whereas the politicians integrate their action in the present the intellectuals place themselves in the context of history based to the colonized colonized intellectuals. Debunking of the colonists theory of recall precolonial, barbarism colonials colonialism's response mute. It is especially Butte since the ideas. Put forward by the young colonized intelligentsia are widely accepted by metropolitan specialists. It is in fact now commonly recognized the for several decades numerous European researchers have widely rehabilitated African Mexican and Peruvian civilizations. Some have been surprised by the passive passion. Excuse me, invested by the colonized intellectuals and their defensive national culture. Those who consider this passion exaggerated are strangely apt to forget that their psyches and their egos are conveniently safeguarded by the French. German culture is worth has been proven, and which has gone on challenged. I can see the fact that the actual existence of an aspects Sigler civilization has done little to change the diet of today's Mexican president. I can see that whatever proof. There is of a once highly Songhai of the once-mighty Songhai civilization does not change. The fact that the song highs today are undernourished illiterate, abandoned, the skies in water with a blank mind, glazed is, but as we have said on several occasions, this passionate quest for a national culture prior to the colonial era can be justified by the colonized intellectuals shared interest in stepping back and taking a hard look at the western culture in which they risk becoming ensnared fully aware that they're in the process of losing themselves and consequently of being lost to their people these men work away with raging hurt and furious mind to renew contact with their people's oldest enter essence the furthest removed from colonial times, let's delve deeper. Perhaps this passion in this rage are nurtured or at least. Guided by the secret hope of discovering.

After the recent rash of mass shootings, including the one Thousand Oaks physicians across the country are stepping up their efforts to combat gun violence. Eric ticket off reports the American college of physicians, the country's largest medical specialty organization says the failure to act meaningful gun control legislation undermines the country, and it's healthcare systems foundational values. Dr Melissa Hagman is governor of the group's Idaho chapter and says she's had difficult conversations with patients about firearms. She says gun violence is a public health issue and should be thought of as an epidemic mass shootings. Individuals shootings people who lose their lives due to. Domestic violence where there's a weapon involved if epidemic gets people's attention. I think that's the appropriate word. It just seems like something that our country is too great to be having as many deaths needlessly due to firearms each of the most deadly mass shootings. This year have left at least ten people dead. The American college of physicians recommends laws that prohibit people with a history of domestic violence from buying or possessing firearms extreme risk prevention orders that allow families to petition courts for the removal of a family members firearms and a ban on semi automatic and automatic weapons opponents of these proposals say they violate Americans second amendment rights Hagman says it's important not to conflate people who commit violence with firearms with those who simply feel strongly about a person's ability to have access and carry guns, and none of them that I've ever spoken to have ever wanted anyone to be harmed needlessly. So I think there is common ground for people to continue these discussions and to work towards legislation and other ways to keep people safer than they currently are the ACP hopes there will be a shift in the narrative on guns and also has developed policy research.
