The browns were nine of fifteen over sixty percent. That is fantastic for any team. Brady and then you talk about it. With case keenum and dearness johnson. I mean the way dearness. You're going to get used to. Let's go to the receiving end though it was cortlandt sutton good to see him back. Especially after you see jerry. Judy go down. And we don't know when he's coming back sutton comes out. And just a monster nine receptions for one hundred and fifty nine yards just all over the field. The averaged seventeen point seven yards per catch. He had two of deep one of my thought. Two of them. I thought were pass interference. What was the in zone. And it looked like the defender early past the sutton. Looks like the defender pulled on his jersey. Just a little bit. But they didn't call it didn't get it still ended up with nine receptions one hundred fifty nine ers For the most part teddy didn't spread it out a whole heck of lot no fat albert. "In this league is is the have the plays work the way that they are drawn up. And at times, you know, as pretty as Teddy Bridgewater showed you When they're not drawing up, still be able to make a play when it's off, Uh, just awful little bit, you know, And I think that Teddy Bridgewater showed yesterday the elusiveness. He showed playmaking ability. He showed you that he's a guy that you can depend on in the red zone, which is something that is really, really fun to see. And it yields us points. That's all you want points in this business. When you take a look, by the way at the day that Melvin Gordon did have 11 carries 101 yards, and obviously, his average at 9.2 was helped by that 70 yard. Touchdown run. And then Giamatti Williams 14 carries 45 yards and, uh, he had a long carry for 12 yards as well. So the running game definitely looked like it was on point and we already know that the Broncos defense Looked like it was on point as well as the Broncos get the dub. They get that first win of the season on week one, which we know was a big deal for this Broncos team to get Because, you know As as Vic Fangio said. But Everybody was on board once I decided to go for it. We did a good job offensively, and Teddy played a big part in that as well as the other guys and getting them converted. You know, I always talk about how there seems to be a great combination between Teddy Bridgewater, Pat Shurmur and yourself. And it seems that when Teddy Bridgewater is out there he has just calmness. I saw it in training camp. The team loves him. This has got to be the way that you want to draw it up when you're the head coach. Walton is very Calm guy and he has a calming influence. And everybody And it can be contagious. At times he did a good job yesterday. And we're glad to have him and both drew when we when Romney drew someday. Coach. When you talk about your defense yesterday, defense did a great job holding holding the Giants to, um, under, you know, 13 under 14 points, And when you really look at the score, it did seem like the Broncos dominated even more than that. How happy were you with the play of some of the new guys that weren't on this team last year? Overall, It was a good game. Obviously, when you hold somebody with 13 points It's always a good thing in the NFL, but there was a lot of things that we can do better on me that penalized more yesterday, then refused to being penalized. On our defense. Um, gave up a couple explosives there, one that we recovered from and obviously one we didn't. But we need to do a better job on third down. Overall, We had our chances that some takeaways that we didn't convert. Well, we're going to need to even play better moving forward Defensively. Yeah, You start talking about the turnovers, and I think that's when, uh, things get exciting for old defensive football player like myself, and I mean there was a clear emphasis in training camp and it looked like it's it's carrying over to the regular season. Well, we've always emphasized it and hopefully this year our emphasis will stick even better. Hopefully we're doing a better job of coaching it. Hopefully, the players are more conscious of it, and we're all working together. But we definitely need to improve in that area. We did get one big one yesterday that was critical. And we had our chances at one or two other ones that we didn't convert. But hopefully we will hear at some point soon. And now this focus on the offense and start with quarterback Daniel Jones. It was interesting as I was preparing for the game to look at his numbers with Kwame Barkley and without a qualm Barkley When Barkley plays he's a guy that is close to 2 to 1 in terms of wins two losses When Barkley doesn't play, it's like 123 so That running back is really critical to Daniel Jones and the entire Giants offense. No question about it. He's a special player both in the run game and in the past game, you know He's a guy that can take a check down all the ways you can run vertical row outside of the back. You know this place out of the backfield and run receiver type routes and H Obviously, the handoff to him is the Most common and dangerous thing He does and you know, take Any time. You can do that, like for a quarterback? Yeah, Let's talk specifically about Daniel Jones. This was a guy that may have been a little bit of surprised when he was drafted as as high as he was. When you see Daniel Jones and the tape you look at one year he was 2 to 1 and touchdowns, interceptions. Not the case last year. So what kind of quarterback do you see when you see Daniel Jones? I see a guy with the ability to be a complete quarterback. He can throw from the pocket. It's got a big arm. Um He can move. You know, he can run the bootleg scramble and be an improviser and find people down the field so She's a guy that can both throwing help You win both from the parking and moving around and I think he's going to be the Giants quarterback. So long time. Let me take you back to the Broncos offense. You start Teddy Bridgewater first opportunity for Teddy to start a game as a Denver Bronco. Uh, what two or three things in your mind are most critical in terms of what the offense must get done in order to have a chance to beat the Giants. Yeah, we're gonna have to be efficient. We're going to have to have Um these are running game going, which will be hard, which will be a hard short because they're big up front. We're gonna have to build, do our play past game and take our shots in the passing game and management relation. Plays more to Teddy strength. Yeah, you look at the injury factor. A couple of guys that have been limited in practice both Bradley Chubb and no offense. Um are you expecting both of those guys to play and if so? I mean, what do you expect from them? Yeah, I think no will be fine. And you know, Bradley still left in the air as to his availability. Last thing give me a couple things that are most critical for you to go for you guys to get a chance to win this opener. Well, we'd like to really win the takeaway Give battle. We? But what if. Trevor lawrence wilson look good this week. Then you don't really see them as terrible teams anymore. You see them as guys as teams with the number one and number two overall pick now it could. It could be the opposite. The broncos could come out they could shut they on barkley down. They could get three turnovers off. Daniel jones and trevor lawrence and wilson struggle in their first game. And you're saying there's legitimate shot at three and put the worst case scenario that we could be talking about in one week from now is pretty daunting talking to zach stevens of dnv. Coming out of las vegas who hasn't played a football game since his junior year of high school in twenty nineteen but they like what he can do and And that'll be interesting if it gets to the point where they need him. Because at quarterback probably gonna take a lot of hits and tayo or whoever's back there so there's a good chance that quarterbacks going to need to be replaced at some point during the season even if just for a series or two. I think a lot of people had had question marks around the quarterback position anyway but in in college football maybe just football in general a backup quarterbacks pretty darn important i mean that's why you when you're looking at the broncos situation the people that were drew lock side don't give up yet because he very well might start at some point whether it's because ineffectiveness or injuries or whatever injuries are bound to happen it's rare to see. Nfl quarterbacks college quarterbacks go for a full season anymore it seems especially when you have guys like taty tayo. That's going to be running the ball quite a bit. What's the definition of insanity doing something over and over and over and over again. Expecting a different result. One season one year is your era is going to determine whether drew locks the guy or not. How he came to the decision there wasn't a lot of separation they both guys had good camps. They both played. Well both had their down. The with the rams sean mcvay does not let his top players play and then put on the fact that it's the final. Preseason game i mean what are you gonna find out in this final preseason game. You're probably not going to be able to get any good evaluation for either of these guys. So you probably should make your decision now to get jump started on week one and start building chemistry between whichever quarterback you choose and the rest of the offense zach like you think. A lot of people were surprised that we haven't had an answer just yet. Let me ask you this. Maybe two questions maybe follow up after this one does vic no I think he does. And i think he's been i think he's been leaning Toward teddy for for a long time and drew made it tough after that. First preseason game but look what we saw drew needed to be consistent and show that he can do what he did in that first preseason game weaken and we didn't have to be the same performance but he had to be really good and show pocket presence employs. We didn't necessarily see that. But we did see that from teddy bridgewater. His staff have been phenomenal. But the two things that really stood out is he is poise and composure in the pocket. That's what vick wants. That's an nfl. Starting quarterback in the second thing is brady teddy had four drives in preseason. He scored every single one of them. He had three touchdowns and one field goal. That may be the most impressive stat. It's all right. So how do you think and again i. I agree with you when you're looking at the body of work through those two games at least and again you've been at practice you've been assessing you've been keeping score but when you just look at the games. Yeah teddy because of the first game teddy was right there. He came right back and he battled closely Maybe drew one that one and looked perfect but teddy was right there. This last saturday no brainer was all teddy but that all being said and the way that this has progressed and i want to get into some of the play calls from saturday to how do you think coach. Fangio has handled this very important quarterback battle. Yeah i think. I think we're still in the process of evaluating that radio if he lets go on another week and then chooses teddy again. He has to give the playoffs this year to be in the top half of the league as one of the head coaches, don't you think? Yesterday in the in the playoffs or to keep his job. The Broncos don't make the playoffs. Fangio is not going to be back as head coach of the football team barring you traded for Rogers, and he got hurt, and you know the team spirals like that. That kind of thing. But as it sits right now, this current team if it does not make the playoffs, I don't think Vic Fangio's back as head coach George Patton as a philosophy. Of giving people the tools they need to succeed. And George Patton believes that the tools that you have right now should be able to make the playoffs. You're going to have what's probably going to be a top five, if not number one defense in the NFL. Your offense figures to be improved as these receivers grow up and get better as the quarterback grows up and gets better, whichever quarterback that may be. Stronger run game because you quit fill. Lindsay was not a scheme fit for what it was that you were trying to do. Oh, there's no question that George Payton has set Vic Fangio up to succeed. As long as we have a conversation a real one about the quarterbacks because the quarterback could be a giant miss. Could be fine could be good could be decent but could be a complete miss. Twenty two thirteen was called a complete team win by so many people starting with vic fangio and then working through the organization all of the players calling a team win. We'll hear from vic fangio here coming up whilst from a happy and relieved drew lock but the broncos dominate on defense six sacks the interception for justin simmons late in the game to seal the win ryan fitzpatrick in and relief at two of who had been knocked out and it was a bunch of people getting in on the act in terms of taxes. We were barely on the Internet in Nineteen Ninety Eight. We're doing email so it was really you know completely new horizon. It's hard to imagine where we sit today and I have no to the haven't her? I said definitely not doing this. What do you call back later? That makes should really think about it. You're hooked for Ebay so I went out and met with hero media who was the founder twenty six years old time and at the end of the day. I went out there mostly because I didn't WanNa make the head hunter math and I got to San Francisco airport that night and I called my husband and I said we should do and some of the things that I would look for in. Consumer companies are is there a features and functionality benefits? If it'll allow you to do something you couldn't do before so like in my proctor and gamble days later why's cleaner fresher breath And do doesn't is there an emotional connection and if you have both of those a consumer product Bingo? Pm? Many are told me that people have met their best friends on Ebay and they were deeply connected to this website. And so I saw something that is very unique you know and then I always look for. Who's the founder or the CEO who is on board of directors? How well is the company funded? What is the consumer need that this new idea is delivering and it can be a B. Two B. Customer or the customer? But I always go to seamer going to think about this. You know in the end you jump into the abyss honestly and you have to ask yourself. What's the worst thing that lettuce like one of the craziest things that happened or something when you look back at those early days and Ebay they were like oh I did not think we are going to get through this well? I'll tell you one funny story in the recruiting process. And then I'll tell you the thing I worked wasn't sure we'd get through so when I went out to interview with Pierre and was super glad because I got to this office building and there was a receptionist and for some reason the fact that they had a receptionist to seem like it legitimized the country. Nothing I was very relieved my first day at work. I go in and where the the receptionist she used to sit. There was never sections. There was no desk. Don't make sure no receptionists. Go about my day and I sit down. I'M GONNA cube next year about. Halfway through the day I said appear what happened to the receptionist. They looked at me and he said Oh. We hired her for the day because we were pretty sure that we had a receptionist. He wouldn't think we were like big enough for legitimate enough to come work for and say well how right you were so the biggest thing that happened at Ebay that I wasn't sure we would recover from is on June tenth nineteen ninety nine. We had a twenty two hour outage for twenty two hours. You could not get to the website. Think about this. We had all these fires all these sellers. Nothing could happen. The CNN truck was parked outside of Ebay. Wanting hourly updates on the status report was it was the most frightening thing I've ever seen because we really did not know what had happened as it turned out. We have corrupted the entire back end database and took us twenty two hours to read about two hours before we brought the site backup. I looked at here and I said well. We can't bring this back up and he said don't worry right about now. Db database administrator will come running in here and they'll tell us what they found and that they're about to bring back up and I looked up here. Yeah okay. That's wishful thinking literally as if on cue about ten minutes later a DB Guinness Okay. Site is coming up. I mean obviously. That's hugely stressful. And an example. That's clearly marked in your memory. What are you like in a stressful situation? How do you react when stressed? Yeah I dive in really deep because I think leadership in crisis is about getting down into the trenches by actually slept at Ebay for over a month. Wait what yeah my system to get cops. You slept at Ebay for a month. Yes because I was sort of just have to be there like port of leadership. I was not a very deep technology executive at the time. I'm much deeper from a technology perspective today and so the only thing I could do was to be by being there lead by taking the temperature of the engineers leave by making sure all of our partners. Cisco OR VERA sign or Sun Microsystems. Were all on board to help us and so I figured that I really just couldn't leave. Because the thing was so unstable. We had a girl confrontations conference room and we use the bathrooms so when I'm fascinated by is obviously this was over twenty years ago. Workplaces look very different today. Era Trying to look different today. There's a huge movement around wellness and avoiding burnout in protecting employees from. Burn out when you look back at those days and the decision to sleep there. Would you make the same decision today? Absolutely one hundred percent because you know when there's and this was truly a crisis this was not just like sort of something that happened. This was really a crisis I mean the future of the company was at stake air and you know people have different leadership styles from my leadership style. It was absolutely the only thing to do. He considers no substitute for being there to say the truth is on the whole face. It's not at headquarters and the call was are not our network operation center and so to be there with the engineers talking to the vendors and partners just made all the difference. You know. We're interviewing you right now in a crazy time in our world where nobody is in the office now and leaders in you know us. Included are trying to figure out how to be strong. Ceo's how to be strong managers and how to show leadership them curious like you. Are you know in new leadership role at a new company However you being there. How are you showing that you're digging in? You can't physically be there. I feel like I live on zoom and we do too and I'm trying to drop into meeting. So my management style in the workplace is by walking around. I mean especially with a company of two hundred and fifty people like you know everybody above ground. See People go up to their desk. See what's happening so now. I'm dropping into meetings that I'm not actually necessarily invited to per se. Sometimes I just listened this Friday. We're doing it a company meeting on slack Which we have planned. I had breakfast with Nag which I did once a week. Which literally was breakfast with Mac? So we're still doing breakfast with meg only as coffee with MEG. And Its bring your own so we're just kind of keeping up some of those things I just got off the slack chat with women in the workplace at pretty and You know just spend half an hour answering questions from our women employees which by the way about fifty one percent of our companies. When you mentioned earlier that you become a much more technically proficient leader curly and I do not have a tech background. We certainly understand what it's like to check in with engineers and show up and show support without necessarily knowing the INS and outs of what they're talking about. How did you start to dive in to that skill set? I think for a lot of people. It can be intimidating but doing it. I mean honestly. There was no substitute for being there when the website went down. I mean just by sitting there listening to what they're talking about asking questions understanding what's happening understanding you know. Actually what a back. End Database actually does and what is corrupted what happens so it was really being there and asking questions. I think those of us who do not have a technology background you just have to ask questions and interestingly when I first started asking questions I thought they're just going to think I'm not smart. Or what the heck am I doing here if I if I add value from a tech perspective and in a funny way but I've found. Is that engineer? Plug to tell you about what they're doing and so. I just learnt by asking questions by doing it was completely on the job training for those ten years and then a different kind of tech at. Hp is that is that was big. Iron servers storage networking. Pretend trying new. Nothing about And so I just out below questions you obviously. Dramatically changed the trajectory ebay. Under your tenure. It became an enormous team generated. Billions of dollars in revenue. When you think back to what that did for you and we're going to dig into the next parts of your career. What do you think your core skill set is? What are you best at? People have sort of a core competency I think at my core I am a strategist and a market and probably on a strategist because my really my first job after Fangio was banned so I was trained in cost customers. Competitor Sustainable Competitive Advantage financial architecture. And so I think my core competency is probably strategy and I have a belief that if you had to rate strategy and less than perfect execution he'll be okay. "For more than fifteen years Boston area filmmaker mark fields has been on a quest to capture and share the story the banjo he's assembled more than three hundred hours of original video and piles of research that's the fuel for his new banjo museum you don't need to leave the couch to visit as Andrea que of member station W. B. O. "I thought Mason Rudolph all good it from what I saw just looking at the numbers this morning in the first half half with primarily big Ben I know he departed at about the two or three minute mark of the second quarter or with a two or three two or three minutes remaining in the second quarter rather but you look at the first first half steelers four point three yards per play forty two percent success rate with Big Ben in the second half five point nine yards per play fifty two percent success rate with Mason Rudolph off. He looked pretty capable. There's a reason they moved dobbs so I think you know things. Look a little better for the steelers offensively. The problem album is Mike. Tomlin's defense fell apart in the second half gave up eight point eight yards per play in the second half once. Big Ben goes out right. It's on you Mike Tomlin. Get away from spot on Denver had their heart's ripped out. There obviously not going to have their early season altitude advantage here like they had a week ago. One shop had the look at as low as ten. They actually produced that before the Sam Darnold News obviously so you have patriots than Bennett. They've outscored their opponents now. Seventy seventy six to three you know Antonio Brown is a go. It looks like a real factor and it's not just Sam Darnold. That's going to be down again right. There's other guys that have some injury question question marks for the jets interesting see where this number goes right. I think there's going to be a lot of movement. Obviously it's not open everywhere right now but you know trevor sending in the jets pull off off an upset tonight or if they get blown out this number is going to head in different directions right. I think if the jets get blown out you're probably looking at closer to twenty if they somehow pull off the upset victory probably turning back down towards two touchdowns.
