"We want to start with some breaking news from this morning. Dc public schools will not reopen elementary schools next week schools. Chancellor louis fair be initially said that schools would reopen for thousands of students november ninth but strong pushback from teachers parents and school principals has delayed that decision giving the district time to solve staffing issues. Here's fair beyond that framework that we make fashion. Assignments were blocked by the western union And we can no longer utilize that data so we will have to create another staffing playing in collaboration with our principal for some context. Here this is also coming as covid numbers and cases. Rise in the district the dc public schools middle and high schools will continue virtual learning until at least february. And that's a pretty big deal but you know maybe not totally surprising if you take into consideration the cova numbers and also looking at other school districts across the region who have flirted with reopening and then had to pull back now. We want to turn to another major issue in our region. A little something. We're calling the presidential election. Oh zack coming up. It is something it's happening sometimes. Thousands of vietnamese americans live in virginia and this year. The community is seeing a distinct split between younger. People are vocal joe biden supporters and older vietnamese voters who have a long history of aligning with the republican party and are adamant about their support for donald trump in october. We believe that communism is wrong. It's bad and we know about it because we escape from a speaker blasts the star spangled banner trunks also registered voters here and. He says it was a help that the republican party rented space in the center for the first time. But just a few days after this rally. There's another one here for biden drummers. Play while a dragon dances at an outdoor fountain. Delegate kathy tran takes the mic. She's forty two and the first vietnamese to serve in virginia's general assembly a democrat representing fairfax county. Shout one of them. Is philip tran. A forty nine year old construction foreman. They betrayed a whole vietnamese community. Audi republicans we're not gonna survive in america. There are more than fifty thousand vietnamese americans in virginia. The political split at the eden center is mirrored across the country says researcher mine new endo at the california based api data in a survey this year. Her group found nearly half of vietnamese voters. Pick president trump. She says that's less than in the past. And it reflects a generational divide older enemies. Republicans might say. We like trump. Newspaper for wmu. I'm daniella chaz low. So i have always been fascinated by asian americans in northern virginia being a filipino american from arlington. I'm a little bit bias on this issue. And i live actually not too far from eaton center. So it's a fascinating place. I've been there myself. And i thought daniel a story was really fascinating when you take the politics into account you can listen to that full story at w. w. dot org now early voting in virginia has ended more than two million. Voters cast early in-person ballots and submitted ballots by mail or dropbox despite record early voting though the region still bracing for long lines and potential unrest on election day. That's right. this is the first election. Day that i'm going to be out in the field where i'm required to have a goggle and helmets and other protective gear which is really wild to think about comparing to how we dealt with election day even four years ago and we'll have more on what voters are saying tomorrow. Election day thanks for joining us for. Consider this from npr. Listen again next time. "Distinctly, by this point, I was in my mid twenties just kind of flash forward here and I had you know finally reached that four hundred pound mark and I could not take more than ten steps or so without my chest beginning to tighten you know hear. So often people use the analogy of felt like an elephant was sitting on my chest and I was like that's a cute analogy until I actually experienced it and I was like holy crap. That is the most accurate thing ever. And so that was really scary because my father's father died before I was ever born and so every time I would feel that in my chest I was reminded of him and thinking like he died when he was in his fifties and I'm not even GonNa, make it anywhere close to that I'm not even gonNA, make it to thirty if I continue down this path and that's a pretty sobering thought but the more to it than that was. To kind of emotional components that that happened and one was by this time in my life, I was already working broadcasting I was working on the radio as one of those wacky morning show sidekicks and appropriately the station I was working at here in Washington. DC. Is. WBZ. Big One hundred point three and so I know, right you can't write this so. I thought that I had to be big chuck to be on the air like that was my personality. They promoted me as such. You know let's let's have the big guy go out and do something stupid. He'll do it. You want to dress them up in overalls and have them run outside and call it. You know the the Hick. Olympics. Let's go ahead and do that. You want to put them up in a in a diaper and and give them. You know dress them up like a the chair for Valentine's Day even though it's freezing cold and have him go round delivering chocolate to listeners. Let's go ahead and do that. It was really shameful at the time and it sucked in hurt but I thought that that's what I needed to do in order to achieve my dreams. So I sucked it up and I did that but all the while while that is happening. I'm also beginning to date a girl who very much was not overweight and I thought that I had hit the Jackpot when it came to love. The problem was this girl bagged and she pleaded with me on a daily basis not to tell anyone that she and I were dating. And it was like being kicked excuse my language it was like being kicked in the nuts. Day After day after day wondering why am I, not good enough for her she didn't want to tell her family. She didn't want to tell her friends. Want to tell any of our mutual. It was to be kept secret and she she was angry when I let her know that I had told my family that I work a couple you know and and so to feel like you're not good enough. But. This is good as it's going to get to have to settle for that. That's a that's a heavy burden to carry for a year and a half every single day, and so when you add all of that up and then having the shameful flight across country where you definitely can't come anywhere close to fitting into the seat and you feel like everybody on that plane is staring at you and you have to humiliatingly ask for seatbelt extender just so you guys can you know take off? That to me you throw all of that together man and it was just like that's it. I cannot do this anymore I absolutely can't do this anymore, and that's when I made that decision to have weight loss surgery didn't know anything about plant based nutrition at that time I just knew that I wanted to live to see thirty and I I took that radical step. Now a lot of people who have weight loss surgery they are not able to change their eating. After because, they haven't changed their mindset and the doctors who do the bariatric surgery often just don't really help and it takes a lot of it's hard to change your eating. So just because you've had the surgery, a lot of people gain it back, I want to just give people an idea of how you in your twenties so that they see how far you've come now. After a successful bariatric surgery and although I. Know You only you say that bariatric surgery was only ten percent of your success but tell us a little bit about how you wait first and then what you did after the surgery that kept it off even an and then, and then even this was even before you started your plant based Diet. Oh, yeah So I was I was single handedly keeping the TACO Bell and Falls Church Virginia and business right outside of Washington DC I had a twenty dollar a day Taco Bell Habit now mind you this was eleven years ago now. So I mean twenty dollars to then is probably thirty dollars worth of food today and I had A. Standing, order there. It never varied and they knew when they saw my car pull into the parking lot just start punching it up and getting it ready. So by the time I got to the order board there were just like hi Chuck, Your Your totals twenty bucks drive on through and so every day sometimes this is twenty bucks in one time one order..

Why Do Dogs Have Tails?

"This is but why a podcast for curious kids from Vermont public radio I'm Jane Lindholm On this podcast, you ask the questions and it's our job to find interesting people to answer them. In this episode, we're talking all about dogs. Now, if you WANNA learn about cats check out our companion episode that episode includes some amazing facts about how cats communicate with humans in a special language they make up with their own individual human family. But in this episode, we're going to stick to barks instead of meows. Lots of your dog questions had a common theme you to know about some of the ways that dogs are different from humans. Jessica Heckman is a veterinarian and a dog researcher and she has a blog called the dog Zombie because she's obsessed with dog brains studying them not eating them anyway I. Guess You could say she's a dog scientists and she's here to answer your questions. Our first one comes from Margot who is five and lives in Amherst Massachusetts. Why did Adopt Tales That's a great question Margot whenever someone asked a question about why does one type of animal look one way and is set up one way and why is another type of animal built a different way the way I like to think about it is talking about that difference why? Why what we use it for? So dogs ancestors, wolves, ancient wolves had to run to catch their dinner and tales helps them balanced when they ran so that was they had them back. Then and dogs some dogs still do have to run as part of their job, right? Like she herding dogs have to do a fair amount of running but dogs also use their tails to communicate. So that's another good reason they have tails. They don't use noises quite as much to communicate as humans do but they use body language a lot more than humans do. So with dogs a tale, it's really high means I'm confident a tale that's held low means I'm. Nervous a tale that's really clamped rate underneath there but means please don't smell my but right now and also I'm really scared and then a wagging tail something all really familiar with because it can mean that the dog is happy but also you can see it in angry dogs I would just caution you to be really careful when you see a wagging tail overall, we try to look at the whole dog, not just the tail to interpret body language but the tail. Is definitely a very important part of the dogs tools for speaking why might dog wag its tail when it's happy or when it's mad? Why would drag tail for both possibilities I think from the dogs perception that they might be seeing something different from a wagging tail than we do. They have this very complex set of tools that they use in body language and we as humans because we're not dogs. We just have trouble fully interpreting that and so I think that. A. Wagging. Tail. It might look a little bit different to them with the dog is happy than if the dog is angry and we as humans might just not be able to perceive those differences. And sometimes, I think a dog who is angry or alarmed or considering that they might possibly by you will wag its tail almost as an appeasement gesture to say like Hey I'm not a threat I'm not don't hurt me but they might still be thinking I'm kind of scared of you and I'm prepared to bite if you come any closer. So it's just It's just always important to look at the whole dog to look at his face and his eyes, and you know how he's holding the rest of his body and not just the tail hello money aller five, six years old I live in Falls Church Virginia and my question is why thumbs up partner Paul. Hi Alex well I think dogs have their thumbs up on their paws to keep them out of their way because they are basically walking on their hands rates they're using their four limbs for something differently than what we use them for horses by the way have taken this to extreme they walk just on the tips of their middle three fingers. Into hooves. So I almost feel like it might be a better question to say why are human thumbs so far forward rather than why our dog thumb so far back we're actually the ones that are unusual. Because humans and other primates like monkeys and apes we have this unusual hand that we use to hold things because we evolved to climb rate, and so we would use our hands to climb up a tree and then humans are thumbs are are even more different than in other primates because we have these very complex hands that are good for really delicate work like holding pencil and things like that. So we're actually the unusual one but yeah, they they walk around their paws obviously and they don't want their thumbs to get in the way.

"Five Steven Platt the lead pastor at McLean Bible asking for sympathy good morning I've got another faster in your father Paul Scalia is with the Catholic diocese of Arlington he is the patron Saint James Catholic Church in falls church Virginia and author of sermons in times of crisis twelve homilies to stir your soul and father when it comes to crisis boy we have one first of all good morning so glad to have you on this Good Friday good morning it's good to be with you thank you for okay of course very very appreciative of you this this you know one of the things I have noticed about all of this and I'm sure it hasn't escaped you as a priest is that in a time of land that we're just finishing up we happen to be hit with corona virus here in the United States at the same exact time am I over reading that all of this is happening at the same time or do you see something special and all of us well I think we we always look to see what what we can learn lessons we can draw from any any kind of suffering or crisis and with this overlapped with lance almost perfectly yes I think that that's not been lost on a lot of people that lunch is a time for sacrifice and we're gonna have to sacrifice a lot now the irony is that we also have to sacrifice coming together as a church and impressed Catholics receiving holy communion which is a tremendous sacrifice and something like that especially during monsoon is a great affirmation see you know father I almost by my husband are very afraid that we're going to get used to not going to church you know in the beginning it was weird because we were Saturday night people or less chance massive seven on Sunday night but so so we're we're more willing to fight the crowds in the morning so as we go through Saturday night rolls around we're like what we gonna do you know is it was it was I thought it was a disruption in in that that routine and we're really afraid that we're going to get comfortable not going how do you prevent that from happening you know that's that's such a great point in it well it's good for you to be a great right and there there should be it should be a level of discomfort there should be a level of longing and desire that is quite the soul because we we don't want to lose sight of the importance of this we don't want to grow comfortable with life without without the church without the mass of the Eucharist we we definitely want to continue desiring those things and one of the things that I've I've tried to convey my pressures is precisely to cultivate my mom being in the fire so that so that won't be lost and and so the sacred things that very special we are social services so that we no longer lost not because you are in the interim you are are you doing mass in a streaming format is that how you're doing yes we do so we need the church open all day so that people can come and pray and and and we have we have people there to you know moderate that the number of people who are in the church and then we have a small chapel with us from which we live stream all of our masses and we're just doing math at the regular time that we always do and so we've been live streaming all of our masses since since the governor you know Katie gave his orders several weeks ago and and then for today and tomorrow in eastern we'll be live streaming everything and was moved to some other initiatives to investors to keep people connected you know my work email guestbook and father on the issue of you know brain searches everywhere are dependent upon the collections from the faithful in terms of them making donations to help support the church how hard is that right now are you losing a lot of the financial resources you need by people not coming to church well of course yes I mean that's I mean the the the Sunday collection is is simply what keeps us going throughout the week that's a start in a standard administrative costs and so you know we're still doing things and we're still we still have five pounds after failing everything so that that lack of of giving on Sundays it is usually the people been extraordinarily what about moving moving trailer trying to campaign or just dropping her and low spots and select items very inspired by a lot it's really out of time but that doesn't that doesn't cover everything so there still is only a great need for people to be more deliberate in Oregon and and and yeah it's great it's a great inspiration when they are the other what's it like to live stream of mass so you're saying mass to a camera in there is no one there to responded as she is a very interactive event so what's it like to do that well you know it's such a great point because math is supposed I mean I'm a priest on occasion will say mass by himself but really it is the norm is that there's a congregation because he's often asked for them you know to the lord for them and give them communion so it is a little awkward you know what we've done is we we have a a good number of priests here in the house and so we serve mass from one another so that so that each priest have somebody at least in the chapel with him and but then you know it's it's still all and you know I'll say one thing that that was surprising to me is that a preaching two eight a monitor is a little awkward at first but and one of the dangers is since there's a lot of congregation there and you can't sense you know sort of when you have a you know hit the limit that they're willing to listen yeah you know the there's not the movement in the use of another clearing up grow and so the to keep reaching and keep going that's not only father fathers go yeah I wanted to ask you you know it we we mentioned we mention of course your last name you are the son of the late Supreme Court justice Antonin Scalia are there any Easter traditions that this Korea family maintains that may be a little interrupted this year by all of us well you know just the getting together and I mean my my siblings you know I I think they get all the nieces and nephews together for for things I'm usually not included because I don't have I don't have children and are using hearing confessions on holy Saturday and busy all Easter Sunday but those family get togethers are are sort of you know somewhat on either agree needed and then and then my big family at the very much others are either created or put on hold entirely so it's you know I think when everybody else is experiencing those distractions and just being together for a nice meal on on on Easter Sunday okay father I need you I need some advice from you said to to end an argument between my husband and I if you wouldn't mind you don't have to yes so here's the thing my husband is a physician and he's working with with Kobe positive patients and I see you and they're they're slammed right now so they're working you know fourteen hour days and he's really busy and there's food everywhere everywhere and he says it's always a temptation because it's usually you know doughnuts and things like that so I told him maybe he noted that today's a day of fast and abstinence for Catholics you can only have one meal I told him he can eat throughout the day if he's working a fourteen hour day and he's on his feet all day and he's doing something it's okay can he eat more than one meal today that's what I want to know yeah I I I I think so given given what he is doing yeah well I I think that's going to be okay Anderson you know such as and and the church's world is one meal me less but then to like snacks or collation as we call them in order to keep your strength and so that the church makes provision for that if you need to get the strength back hi then he should have company especially given the circumstances and we don't want him to not had the notion he needs okay that is C. and you know he's gonna hurt her too strict but not unreasonable I'm back tonight and he's going to say you know he just said that because he was talking to you answer the question for me is that's why he's logging on you help them out if he if he wants to fast great if you want to be instructed as possible that's great thank you mom and your husband keep his friends and all of us keep us right during this time thank you father possibly a great to have you with us this morning thank you about seven forty "Absolutely. That's a great question. So the question was I mentioned that I got my citizenship. It was a fluke. How the question was how did that happen? So my case was remanded the board of immigration appeals, which is the highest immigration court their base in Falls Church Virginia. It was remanded to them twice. And they are one of the most one of many of. Courts that is slow in processing cases, they don't really look at cases review cases. So the chance of having them sending my case to them twice. And the first time they sent it back to the immigration judge in buffalo and said, no look at the case again, and then the immigration judge in buffalo said no, I really want this woman out of here. Let's put her in detention facility, whatever like I'm going to take this up to with the trains general if we don't make this happen. So he sent it back to immigration board of immigration appeals. And finally, they said, you know, what we're going to close the case we're gonna make the judge give her a green card grant her permanent. Residency. I was told by so many attorneys that doesn't actually happen. That's a fluke. I mean, it's like one in a thousand case chances for that to happen. They don't the board of immigration currently doesn't have the bandwidth to look at cases, let alone they gave me a six page response. They gave the judge is six page response. As to why you know, I deserve to be in America, and I deserve permanent resident status. So that just doesn't happen. Really? Certainly there were things that I, you know. To enhance the probability of that happening. But quite honestly at the end of the day. It was a fluke. Oh,.

"We'd like to Michael Buckley? Tax director of m j w CPA's Michael what does MJ w CPA's? It is a twenty person firm over in Falls Church Virginia over the seven quarters area. And how larger house malls you organization. We got about twenty employees over there are eighty Josh. What do you think? Tell me a little bit about your family. Okay. Well, I'm the oldest of two brothers about one and a half years older than my younger brother and twelve years older than my youngest, brother. So your brother was year and a half difference between you guys what what was your relationship like? Well, I had to kind of oversee him. I just kind of the typical eighties latchkey kid who when school was over. I had to go watch over 'em for at least two and a half hours after school earlier. You said you guys were quite competitive. Yes. How was that? Shaped who you are in business today. Well, he was the bigger kid, even though he was younger and more popular wine. I'm Scott in the mortal, quiet, studious one already Alan. What do you think? Tell us about your father and his career. So he was electrical engineer be hired on various government contracts. But usually when the funding ended on the contracts that ended his job. So there are constant times. When growing up he was laid off in looking for jobs. So that that presented a lot of uncertainty growing up, and perhaps lead you to where your your chosen profession is today. That's correct. I I kinda figured he he always said don't be an engineer for that reason. But I wanted to look for a job that was stable and you'd never get rid of taxes. Right. And who's your most influential person in your life? This is probably my high school teacher in because I would meet with them every morning. After we got picked up at five fifteen in the morning to get school beat with him at seven o'clock. And we just talk over the sports section of the Washington Post and pick games. He was a pretty much a constant in your life. Whereas you're dead. He'd be well. Well, he was busy trying to. Do his job and then provide for us history teacher who was a constant in your life. How did he influence you? What difference did he making your life? Well, since I was the oldest. There wasn't really kind of an older person to kind of talk to. And so I kind of look out I didn't have an older brother up to. So you're the tax director, this accounting firm, does that mean that you're comfortable going the other people and older men and younger women all different people to get the right answer start. You don't think you have all the answers. No. I don't have all the answers, basically, tried to be as honest as I can with them. And if I don't know an answer, I can consultant it comes right from your relationship with this history teacher were you you really enjoyed being meant you had a close relationship with them. That's right. Jim, Michael, what activities were you involved in as youth? Well, I played a little tennis never got the center core Wimbledon. But I also was in cub scouts and boy scouts growing up, and what roles did you have in boy scouts so in boy scouts. I was the job that I liked the most was scribe collecting the dues and tracking all the attendance such an accountant. Oh my God. That's a position that really requires a lot of trust as well. That's correct. So how long did you stick with scouts? I was in the boy scouts. I started winds ten and a half years old and went all the way till I was eighteen okay. And become an eagle scout. I did about six months before my eighteenth birthday. So you probably learned a lot of leadership skills through scouting as well as right by had to kind of bandaged kind of the younger kids. I've worked my way up through the firm able petroleum. What do you what do you mean you had to manage the younger kids? What are you talking about? Well, it's. You have kids move into the troop. And basically anyone who's kind of younger within by maybe two three years. You're kind of teaching them were you assume that role because your personality trait? Well, it's it's. Yeah. Yeah. You did what's have to do with your business with your business nowadays? Well, you constantly having new people. Rex correlation between what you were doing in scouts and bringing in the younger people what you're doing now rice. I love teaching. Thank you very much less. Yeah. What was your what was your mom's role in terms of the family and work? Well, my mom always wanted me to be self reliant. She always said her dad would starve themselves to death in a kitchen full of food. So I'd be responsible for making my own line. Clean my own room and washing my own dishes. Basically be that self reliant. And what's that got to do with? How you run your business today? Well, it's essentially you're kind of relying on yourself to try to get to an answer. For your client. Wow. So you're telling me your clients come to unions oppose these saying, I don't know. We're not really looking for the answer. You're really digging for the answer. You don't have any problems trying to find an expert. You really service your class? You have a lot of turnover of your clients. No, no. It's not surprising because you really service them Brian. Yes. Can you tell us a little bit about some of their early work history? Look some of the jobs you do in your kid. Well, when I was sixteen years old, I was sent over to the city Fairfax to watch over summer camp kids. It was only summer jobs because they want me to continue to go to school and not be kind distracted with doing work as well while I was going to school. They being your parents. I take it. That's correct. What did you learn from your work, your work activities, though? Well, it's kind of working with a group at because I was kind the youngest one there. So I was kind of with other college students and people who were kind of in that type of occupation that they wanted to be at as far as watching over kids who so you as opposed you developing kids, you were the youngest one I was the youngest one in kind of staff. So how'd that make you feel having younger ones that you could mentor? He was a little different. I it was kind of like you had to be the grownup. So you like you like being in charge you like develop another people. Natural world for your. Yes. Josh, well, it so how does that impacted how you interact with older people or diversity within your business today? Well. It's usually the people who have had the most experiences who you can learn the most from. Yeah. There you go. What's the website address to this organization? It's m j w CPS dot com. We've been speaking with Michael Buckley tax director, Ben j w CPA's and executive leaders radio. Let's can you give us a rundown on who we've had the opportunity speaking with Russell Lacey, president at electric advisors. Mark such principal at lines and such. There's no way to show up cool except as a as a as an. Add on. But maybe, but when I think what it is in uncall-, it posits that once I work who'll at one point I was and now I look back, and I go I was never I never. Cool. It's not something you can ascribe to yourself. It is something sitting can feel about you. If they wanted to because they're they're so many people that I think are calling. I'm sure if I told because I because I look back at. I mean, maybe I deluded, but I still think I'm cool. Do we everybody knows that you think you're like I, but I don't care if other people agree with me, I guess is not I'm not my my validation of that feeling is not tied into anybody else's. What makes you? Action of makes you think you're cool. I just feel it. I just feel genuinely like. Peaceful in pleased about my choice in music, my choice, in fashion, my choice in friends profession like I feel. Like. It just feels joyful in in. You don't need. You don't need you'll need validation for parking. You know, I totally get that. That's what is when we t shirt for parking. Did you just make that up? The show. Land. I remember we both had German said they were they were mean. And I remember I was very young showed her very excited showed her my report card, and she was like why telling me, she she's like, I don't care you have to care, and and it was a harsh lesson for a kid, but it was a good lesson for life because I- she taught me really early not to seek validation validation. Like, what am I happy? If i'm. Yes. I was happy with it. Then if you didn't like it. I was I was prepared to not care about that. My main by being cool is that I never felt that I so that is so I think so I do think let me let me tell you like like in high school. I grew up outside of Washington DC in Falls Church Virginia. And I my best friend was like, I met my best friend at the time working at my first job, and she was seven years older than me. And she was the sort of one that curated my musical tastes for me and experiences going to rock shows like that. And she and her sister, we're punks, and I was really into that whole Goth music new wave scene where it was like the cure in. This is to have an I dressed like that in high school with giant dyed hair and huge shoulder pads and very stylized, and I looked very different than everybody else. And I. I liked that. I didn't care that. They thought I was weird. I liked how I liked. I liked that. I was express that. I was trying to be a part of the Suzie soup cure world. Not the high school world that I was in during the day. Like, I was very comfortable with looking weird or different than the people.
