Training Topics of Speed and Power Development in American Football and Field Sports

"Hey everybody welcome to another show, so this one is a little different and instead of me, interviewing someone or instead of throwing out a Q. and A. and answering your questions I'm actually being guest interviewed by a guy who has an absolute stud resume in the field, and that is Josh hingst. I will say so. Josh I I meant to interview him for a long time now, but Josh flip the script on me and asked if he could interview me on a speed and power in related training topics for American football. When I say football really no matter what sport you work with it, it's this is really applying concepts of of speed bio mechanics for team sports so so American football team. Sport and really translating sprinting speed, and by a mechanic topics really into that environment the. Josh has a superstar resume. He's the head strength coach of the two thousand eighteen super bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles. He's had past experience with the Jacksonville Jaguars the University of Nebraska the Atlanta Falcons as well as Florida State University. Josh multi talented, not only is he a strength coach and Ex Anna successful. When at that doing? A lot of work particularly with the Eagles in integration of Sports, science, and really being on the cutting edge there, he also is a sports nutritionist and has done a lot of work in the past in the realms of sports nutrition at some of his previous stops in twenty thirteen, he co-authored Athletes Guide to sports supplements out when he was at the University of Nebraska. I I met Josh back in two thousand four in Barcelona Spain, and it's been phenomenal to be able to stay in touch with him. Since then I'm super humbled. He wanted to interview me. This is like a it was a great opportunity to share my thoughts and put some thoughts together on these topics, but again just super humbling to be interviewed by a person with such awesome resume who I've been trying to get as a typical interview. Guests for this show so anyways we'll. We'll get onto it here just a couple of quick topics that we are. are going to run through is sprint a sprint, development and sprint mechanic development and speed drills particularly as it pertains to team sport. We're GONNA get into concepts on training foot. some particular concepts that I've that really stuck with me from a dairy bar that I've learned from him and how that Pertain Sport? We're GONNA. Talk about is metric, hamstring, injury, prevention and more. This was a really fun talking. I, hope you guys enjoy it so so let's get onto it episode to ten guest interviewer. Josh, thinks, and I have any conversation on speed and power topics. All I. I wanted to start off by Sharon. You know just the thank you for You know it's not often that you know people. Like me. Get a chance to thank people like you that you know that you're learning from that. You're progressing from. N. A just appreciated that. You know it's been a really good thing. I that there's others in the field like Mike in my shoes. That want to say that and. Yeah so I. Just I mean a lot of different thoughts. I mean. I think probably for me. You know I think you know a lot of the questions that you of have chewed on and and some of your interests. It's fun because I think we can all see where your brains at sometimes based on some of the people that you're bringing on the podcast with. Health or Of different things like that, but I think it's all really good good stuff, but I guess the first question I had is is probably one that you've answered a lot I think it's just more or less your take on some speed mechanics and running drills, and those application teams or seen I. Think a lot of people in my view. Shoes are like. Like well. We're not going to change that now. You know we're getting twenty three year old athletes in you know. Are we wasting our time in those types of things, or are you feel what you would do? You think that we can make make change. In how much time and energy do we devote to these things? Yeah, so that's a good question. I would say just in my time working with team sports in the running situation and thinking about it, and watching and observing as well I, think the I'll start with the good, actually because I think that it's in my nature to sometimes be a little contrarian as I was mentioning before we start recording I try to stay balanced. Try to really still like both sides of the equation, so with the common sprint drills as the bees, and whatever else there isn't all the marching type stuff 'cause I guess if we think of Sprint Joe. We think of a march. It's not going to fast horizontally. You're slowing the horizontal component down so there's some things in the vertical plane that. You can work on. It's all start with the positives I i. do think that there's always a bandwidth I mentioned this and speed strength, but I think that even if there's a disconnect between the actual mechanics in a marching bass drill for an athlete who might be a very muscular type athlete like they're very muscle driven they they tend to really squat deep in their movements, which isn't a bad for being a football player and Rennick Selah Rating. That's really important. But for someone who may not be in touch with their feet so much I think it gives a good opportunity to give them exposure for some of the vertical contacts ply metric in some ways so I I think that's okay. I don't have a problem with that I. Think it's the poll, the pole or was it dried mock or I think he's Polish when he came up with that stuff. It was really because they couldn't run I. don't know how many indoor tracks they had, and they just had to come up with a creative way to maintain. Muscle specific conditioning for sprinters, so if we think of if I'm a football player, a basketball player, and most of my movement is with a lower center of mass, and it's a little more specific to half the change. Directions quickly which I. wouldn't if I was a football player, I wouldn't WanNa really run like a sprinter because that's sometimes I think about if I'm spending more time in the air by nature, I need to the the the time for me to make a decision is is more or less are basically it's going to if it takes me longer to put my foot down. Now I can't change directions as quickly and I will say and I don't WanNa deviate from the question of sprint because I'm going to get there, but me and a dairy bar have been talking just in attract context about strategies to athletes run the four hundred and a lot of these athletes who are dying at the end of the race die because they don't. They can't switch strategies like they run one way. Way Whereas Wade. Van Niekerk does different things with his arms and legs on the Ben. The key switches strategy so this makes out I do think it is valuable for a football player or team sport athlete to be able to have different strategies, but I wouldn't I would never watch a football player, run and think man. You need to run as long as you're not running away. It's GonNa. Get you hurt. Excessive anterior till and the backside mechanics, poor backside macaques that come with the anterior till I. Get that we want to minimize those, but I don't necessarily need to see. Run same

Coronavirus task force holds first briefing in months as cases hit record high

"The United States about to hit forty thousand new corona virus cases today. The first time that we've had that many one day, the death toll in the United States closing in on one hundred twenty five thousand people, but if all you did was listened to the president and vice president today, you would be absolutely stunned here what I just said because this is what they said. Today? All fifty states and territories across this country are are opening up safely and responsibly. Well, that's incorrect. It's factually incorrect. They're not I mean eleven. States are currently on pause. Some of them are actually backtracking and closing some things down on plans to reopen Texas and Florida specifically. They are rolling back reopening plans governors of the other nine states. They are not moving forward with the next phase of reopening. So that was incorrect, and then the vice president went on to make this claim. The truth is we did slow the spread. We flattened the curve. So he says we flattened curve, so let me just show you America's curve. So you see, the surge right and then in in March and then you see the plateau. And then you see. The jump there at the end where we are now getting to fifty forty thousand cases today. That was a plateau, and it's on its way back up and I want you to compare the graph to these other graphs. These are countries around the world right? They have that surge at the beginning the UK Germany France Italy Japan South Korea European countries measured in thousands of cases Asian in hundreds, but look what happens at the bottom. They go all the way back down and stay that way. Ours never went down right, and now it's going back up currently with the same steepness of slope as it did at the beginning. And yet the vice president was taking a victory lap during today's briefing and he made sure to credit person number one. Under the leadership of President, trump is the president's made clear credit I believe to our president of the president made that decision. So, where was the president during this briefing while he was somewhere in the vicinity, but he was on twitter, talking about confederate statues, tweeting this image of people suspected of trying to vandalize statue of Andrew Jackson and what he was writing was that many people in custody with many others being sought for vandalisation of federal property in Lafayette Park Ten year prison sentences. It was hours later that the president did finally say something about the pandemic. That's amazing raging right now in the United States like nowhere else here he s. We have work to do that. We'll get it done. while. That's an understatement it. We are learning tonight that people traveling from the United States most likely will not be allowed to even enter the European Union. Banned, because the United States has gotten the virus under control Kaitlan Collins is out front. She's live outside. The White House Tonight Caitlyn. No briefings for eight weeks the White House. Felt like they had to do something here, but then they came out and said everything's opening you safely and responsibly opening fifty states. When that's just you know factually untrue. Yeah. It wasn't the message that some people were expecting the vice president to project from that briefing today after Wednesday's coronavirus task force briefing, and after you're seeing these numbers from this week including yesterday setting a record high of cases per day since the month of April, of course, which is the last time that they had these coronavirus briefings now you would that they would have. have taken more questions. The vice president instead of Aaron only took a handful of them, but before he started taking questions, you saw him arguing saying that he doesn't want the American people to think that because of these new surging infections that the United States where it was two months ago, even though the case numbers per day or mirroring that or beating it and. And of course, the vice president went on to talk about what precautions Americans should be taking. He ticked off a list of things that the CDC has recommended. But Aaron he notably left out wearing a mask when a reporter asked about the fact, that mask have become this political issue. He then only told people that they should be following local or state guidance ignoring the. The fact that the CDC a Federal Agency of course, has recommended that people wear masks when they are out in public, and within the vicinity of other people. He also defended those rallies that he and the president have been holding and encouraging their supporters to come to where thousands of people are put indoors with very little social distancing errand by saying that it was people's. People's right to the first amendment characterizing it more as a personal decision than something that they're organizing and urging people to come in to attend, but I do want to note to striking things that came out of that briefing today was the vice president offering a pretty rosy assessment of these numbers, and then Dr Falcon getting up there and having a very sobering warning. What's to? To come and personal responsibility and this, but also Aaron the vice president saying he believed it's an arguable that the reason that there are more cases in the united. States because there's more testing Dr. burks got up and she was going through these slides and one of the ones she pointed to was Texas where it showed in May as they were increasing testing their positive. Positive test rates were going down in the last two and a half weeks they continue to increase testing, but now those positive test rates Aaron are going up, and that completely refutes with the president and the vice president have been telling people and governors for the last several weeks. All right, thank you very much. CAITLIN absolutely makes the crucial point. Right the percent test rate. Rate is what they're looking at twenty percent of them. Positive that that's that's the relevant point. It's not the absolute number and Caitlyn I. Appreciate Your Time, so let me go now to Dr. Sanjay Gupta and Dr Jonathan Reiner. Who Advise the White House medical team under president? George W Bush currently in Cardiac Cath lab at Gw so so sanjay the vice president today. Came out and presented an alternate reality. he said all fifty states and territories. This country are opening up safely and responsibly. That is quote obviously the have double digit states halting stepping back. They're reopening all together big steps back. Yeah I mean. I. Don't even know where to begin with this particular briefing. You know you think two months. We haven't had a briefing. There's obviously some real trouble spots in the country and I'm. Saying that almost euphemistically I thought there was going to be an acknowledgement that look. We have some problems. Significant ones in here is our plan to address them. Here's what we're GonNa do we're convening the coronavirus task force to to address this? We didn't see that at all. I mean there's the last task force briefing. You can see what the numbers were at that point and obviously just see how the numbers have grown even over the last few weeks. Weeks, so it it it was it was a real concern, and there were a lot of things that were said that were just basically a whitewash of what's actually happening in the country, and that's what I think. Worries me. How are you GonNa fix the problem. If you don't even acknowledge it right well, that's the thing. If you're in complete denial about it, then you obviously don't have a plan to fix it because you don't believe it's their. Running when the president actually gave a nod to this this afternoon, his comment was making a lot of progress with the whole situation, but we have a lot of work to do but he did not attend the briefing instead he was treating about those confederate Mon. Monuments So, you know in the vice president. There was talking about all the encouraging news again. His words talking about Krona virus so. What do you make of this and I guess specifically the president's refusal to be there. Yeah the president. In a tweet about the monument seems to be more interested in protecting long dead confederate traitors. He is in protecting Americans right now. Yeah, I was really appalled. When the vice president today said well, we've all heard the encouraging news you encouraging news, really

SpaceX’s next rocket fairing reuse milestone within reach after latest recovery

"Germany keeps the website behind the black we're going from the surface of the planet earth up a little bit towards the atmosphere not quite earth orbit and they were coming down very quickly in a controlled fashion this is another SpaceX success attached to the launch of the starling it's about something called the Farrington to often over these last weeks we've raced past the idea of recovering fairings and not explaining Bob good evening to you what is a fair F. A. I. R. I. N. G. good evening John well you know SpaceX's goals than to try to reuse as much of its falcon nine rocket is pop they now very successfully reused first stage pretty routinely and nobody pays attention anymore but one of the things they've been also trying to re use it's relatively simple piece of equipment is the shroud that covers their payload during launch protecting it from the atmosphere while that growing up very fast Hey they all the cold it's routed to proper and usually it's made of to cut it to two paths that thank shell that go over the payload and one above the atmosphere rockets they routinely just released this is the the chef Erin because the sooner they can get rid of it less weight they carry which means they can get hired all of it and so they get rid of its like stage getting rid of the stages and routinely for more than half a century we've been told that well you know it's only a piece of metal really it's got some electronics and about which you know which we can't recover its just it's got thrown away and because the lan Moscow SpaceX's novel that's ridiculous we can figure out a way to save this we could save somewhere around ten fifteen percent of the cost of large we can reuse these things until we've talked about this a few times on the show where they've been sent out share book ships with gigantic folding **** unfold and they try to catch the ferry the fairy meanwhile has now been fitted with a parafoil parachute so that is it's coming down at a certain point where it's a high enough and deep enough in the atmosphere the powerful oil comes out parachute comes out it kind of controlled shoot this electronic that you can steer and maneuver thing down very gently and so the ship's try to catch him and they have been relatively unsuccessful in catching them I think they've only court like two out of like twenty they've tried to catch him but the fact is that because of the way this is a controlled re entry and descent on a parachute and the ship is in position on the ship is very close by when it hits the water and because the bearings actionable it's kind of like a political and so the way the parachute is what it comes down it lands like a boat the ground outside edges in the waters of the electronics on the inside don't get touched by the salt water and so they've been able to pick these things up and bring them back and they've actually now we used a bunch of them even though they landed in the water and in this most recent flight both bearings war reviews this is the second use by the way from two different launches so they put two different variants in two different lunch together to do a launch and they were able to recover both neither of which is always able to cash in and that they had taken out of the water and this key is senseless the space except for possibly flying it's the third time this once again means that with the first stage of the parents are covered they were cover seventy percent of the falcon nine rocket it means and I should point out that's the only mission that launched over the weekend includes to set two satellites from another customer overrule with the reviews and with the payments they probably got from the customer SpaceX probable is able to launch those starlink satellites at practically no cost to the company that show how smart this is

"End it the same way. tastic Aston you just I mean you see the night and day difference between the in all Mitt. I'm one of the people that was like oh in Queens back to being the offensive coordinator like he was when we went to super bowl awesome. Wait it blew up the first day games were terrible and then I mean it could be the world's biggest coincidence but it isn't remorse stepped in In credit to Dan Quinn he basically said you know. I'm I'm sucking here do this right you know and I think that honestly is why he's still around because that that is an important thing to do because because a lot of these people have massive goes where they don't want to failure nope I nobody wants to admit failure. And that's essentially what he did by stepping back and letting more step in you know and that's the players love him that's the leader thing Double back to that. I mean that's just as important as anything I think is heaven players who actually wants to win for you You know not to just focus on Danny Quinn. But I think it's relevant here where you know. He has confidence taking. Moore's his job was on the line and he basically said redeem. I'm doing a terrible job here. You go run it and he ran it and honestly I think you're right. I think that is a big factor for why is allowed to come back. I mean he saved his job offense. You could argue play better but the defense you know really woke up. UH-HUH I mean you just look at the for me. I'm a big turnover guy. If you're winning the turnover margin you're GonNa win the game thing. I mean four turnovers. Over's Bhai the defense in the first eight games. That's that's so bad. They had the in the next time. They had turnovers against the Carolina Panthers. They had four so they matched the two games into remorse. Running the defense You know it's just it's night and day difference But I mean that's my overall thoughts and you know I don't WanNa be excited because his team stupid and likes to get our hopes up and just destroy them. But I'm more optimistic about this defensive Benson was say week eight or week nine You know I think remorse it should be a head coach. You know somewhere else probably pretty soon. We haven't for year next year. Yeah exactly You know so I mean we'll see we'll see what they add this off season I don't think the defense is terrible. I don't think people need to panic in growing more Honestly doing a pretty damn good job considering a yeah you know in the back half of the season now have a full offseason of being the defensive coordinator so now he can actually focus on you know because I believe he didn't he start the season as passing coordinator or something like that and it wasn't even on defense. Now with the Falcons on the defensive side about yeah but I mean like he went into the bye week in got the reins in his next opponent was at the New Orleans saints who I mean they were riding high at that point like nobody gave them a shot and we held them to nine points. I think what it also gets lost in that is they were also on a bi week so they had all that time to prepare for us as well so you know. I'm really high on rookie. Remorse I'm excited. I think the defense is only gonNA get better Or they should. I'll say that so. Yeah Yeah I've seen what happened. So as I think you you echoed it. You already said Dan Quinn's best move was firing Dan. Quinn and adversity fence was concerned. So what that means for twenty twenty. I'm not sure any of US know with any certainty but is minimum certainly made. It made the team interesting at least in in some of the wrong ways. Yeah so with that. We're going to wrap up this This review of the two thousand eighteen. Zhao Ken's defense. Evan wants you to our listeners where they can find you what you've got going on. Yeah you can find me on twitter at Burchfield in also writing for the Alchoholic. Lca Hollick You know I know. It's the off season for the Falcons by You know get on the phone call every now and then read some of our stuff you know. "Wise. They're not in the right place where they're maintaining gap integrity and staying true the run. They're missing tackles. They've been involving. Eric read a lot and he's a very good run defender but on Sunday he was terrible. So yeah it's it's GonNa be interesting. I don't really even know what to say. Because I could see the panthers coming out. And shutting down the Falcons and I can see the falcons going for like two two hundred yards rushing altogether in Gina. To that point I in some ways. This feels like a match up that that is hard to predict because on the one hand the Falcons have have been trying to run the ball more and they obviously have more success excess against the saints than they have had all year long but there are also missing their top. Two running backs I mean. devante Freeman is going to be l.. More than likely either Smith. We lost him for the season a couple of weeks ago And now we're down to Brian Hill. WHO had a great game against the saints on Sunday but season and he's had you know moments Throughout his career where he is looked apart you know caen in feature back option long-term no but I think especially against a team with a run defense like Carolina's he could probably get some things done. I think Brian it was interesting that you mentioned the DFS angle because shoutouts brains dock one of our readers who is on twitter and he plays in my draftkings draftkings leagues on a regular basis. And so he asked me today. If Brian Hill was a smart quake anything about it. And I mean he is going to be because he's not devante Freeman. He's not you know one top-flight backs but he I think will be able to get some points And so yeah well. While the Falcons have as much success success against the panthers on the ground as like teams with an actual first string running back. WHO's healthy enough to start? Probably not but I think the Brian Hill can have a pretty okay. Whole game wants them? I guess the thing that concerns me is again. The Panthers are one of the best to get after the quarterback and this has been a year again. We're my Matt. Ryan has been pressured pretty regularly throughout the season. That's he got injured because of excessive pressure in the game Before the bye week. So it's this is this feels like a potentially bad matchup for the Falcons offense because they wanna they wanna pass and then on top of that. You're missing an Austin. Hooper who's Relief Valve so on on with the Patriots He was sweeper role. He was a super reliable option for Ryan the entire time that he was here. Calvin readily is having a very inconsistent season You know I think that Jaden Graham has potential but luke stocker is no Austin her And so again. This is a depleted offense. I don't think that fit based on what I know about high ankle sprains. I don't think that Matt Ryan is one hundred percent. I don't think that he will be for a couple of weeks. And you know if they put him on the run and on Sunday. That's going to be. It's going to be a long day and you know the offense played. Well I thought against the saints and I have to single out caleb mcgarry because I thought he really had an exceptional game against one of the better has rushers in the league and Cam Jordan and so you know I think that they're urge selling To steal a phrase from Earth to steal a word from Thomas Roth finally gelling when we had so many personnel l.. Changes because I like. It is our chemistry so I think that they're getting there. Hopefully they can be cohesive enough to keep Matt Ryan from dying it but yeah yeah honestly I just want to say this one thing in response to Gina before we move on but if Matt Ryan is tasked with throwing the ball anywhere from thirty five to fifty the times he's GonNa get killed. Yeah Yeah Yeah. I think that's pretty clear. And they don't want to do that but I think if if the panthers can slow the rundown on first and second down. I think that'd be a key. Because if if you start forcing the Falcons in the third long in in telling US offensive line to hold on for a seven step drop against pass rush. It could be a very very long afternoon. So WanNa flip the script. WanNa talk about the the panthers offense events and this sort of what the hell are. They Falcons. Defense Gina I wanNA start the Falcons defense because you know we saw something completely different Sunday from what we've seen the rest of the season you know we saw the six sacks we saw some great coverage including from a Kendall Sheffield who are. What school did he go to your State University? Dvu even if some of our friends on twitter disagree but yes it what what is your take do. Are you concerned like I am that. Maybe it was a one game. Aberration is it a sign of a turnaround. What is your read on the defense? For the Falcons. I don't think that you can be straight up trash four all of those weeks and then all of a sudden you have one game and everybody is just supposed to be like oh great now. They're just a bunch of all pros. Everything is this egg you know. Is it reasonable to expect that they ah have improved With you know more clang time for the guys who are forced into more snaps because of injuries and you know just more time to acclimate to each other and the changes with the coaching staff. Moving his actions were reasonable to expect. I think that My hope at least that they won't look as much like hot asked as they looked for every game up until the saints game. So that's my hope but yeah I mean as far as expecting them to replicate that performance. I think that that is a long long shot up for disappointment folks. If you think that. That's going to Piss Falcons defense. We see every week. I mean I think Saints Saints Game Aside. They have to continue to earn it. They have to relearn our trust. And that's going to include having to repeat that performance This weekend and Carolina to get us to buy in that they may be better than what we thought have to hold the three field goals. And you're GONNA have to land success that's war in your trash okay. That's that's a pretty high bar but hey you guys set the standard entered yourself so on the road division game. I see no differences here So Brian Panther's offense obviously Carolina's Cam Newton. I want to get your quick take on you. He is actually going to be gone or not Christian McCaffrey. He clearly legitimately one of the best offensive weapons in the NFL. This year. at I don't think that's arguable at this point and Kyle Allen is he good enough that fans shouldn't worry about potentially losing cam and then maybe one thing that I I think is being overlooked or not talked about enough is the panthers offensive line. I it feels like they have some good pieces. But maybe there's still some holes in this this unit. What is can you give Falcons fans a quick read on the panthers offense the camp situation? Just give us the update okay. So the CAM. Newton situation is being horrifically overblown by the national media because David tepper before the season even started instead he would be willing to let Cam Newton sit for the entire season if needed They have a twelve million dollar deal or fourteen million dollar deal or something like going into next year there is no reason to trade him. They're like especially now when he's GonNa be coming off and probably not having played like what trade valued valued quarterback like that half. You'RE NOT GONNA get multiple first round picks for him so he doesn't have trade value. Have Kyle locked in on his rookie deal. He has no choice but to accept except the League minimum next year. So it just doesn't make sense to part ways with Cam. Newton that that fourteen million or so. They're going to have if they cut him or trade. Him is just going to end up going towards a quarterback probably so why would you give yourself that problem. In this off season people have been pointing. The Kyle Allen's win record and like well. He used the future because he's got this many wins and now all of a sudden that win loss record is starting to teeter back to five hundred so it's being overblown loan a lot. And if you if you actually watch kyle and play you can tell he doesn't make the throws that you would want for a quarterback. Yeah he's got he's had some nice throws but he you also Mrs stuff that Cam Newton would hit with Greg Olsen routinely So I don't think that you that Falcon stands should rejoice in that Carolina's is going to let go and Cam Newton. I think he'll be back next year and quite frankly I think he'll be back better than ever no matter what happens this season because he's going to have a whole offseason recover and the whole issue right now. Is Liz Frank Injury injury and not even a shoulder. It's a totally different injury. So those freak injuries happen everybody like it's not it's you know they absolutely. It's not like the shoulder sir. The shoulder injury suddenly contributes to him hurting his foot. It just happens it sucks and you you know it is what it is. He's going to be fine as far as the panthers offense on. Sunday against the Falcons Defense Obviously the number one guide really worry about is Christian McCaffrey. I'm sure that nobody's surprised by that. But just looking at the Saints Game Alvin Kamara touch the ball. Four Times rushing the football and eight times receiving which is twelve touches. You can expect Christian McCaffrey to get double that this game. No matter how bad the panthers offenses he he somebody where you can only contain him for so long the way he's been playing recently and he's going to get the football doesn't matter the the the one thing about the saints is that they don't devote stubbornly to a certain player all the time same from maybe Michael Thomas but even then he's been having a good season No matter how bad the panthers offense is Christian McCaffrey. We'll be getting that football. And he's GonNa get and he will break one open for a touchdown I can. If the Falcons could easily win this game Christian McCaffrey. Having one. Hundred and forty yards of scrimmage is going to happen he's GonNa he's GonNa have a lot of yards. So that's the identity. The Panthers Right now is Kyle. Alan needs to play just enough just well enough for them. Not to lose and Christian. McCaffrey needs to take place. That said you're probably GONNA watch kyle out on Sunday and be like what the Hell is national media. Hyping this guy up about because he'll he'll make throw words like a dime twenty five yards on the field and the next he'll he'll make a spin move and you're like oh we're going to see him unleashed and it'll go thirteen yards.

"<hes> they've got one in gaithersburg. They've got one in rockville. Doc village got one in silver spring and they've got the one here in bethesda but if you're working from home and it's not working out and you live in this general area or you wanna move your office office consider launch workplaces of the festa or anywhere else where they have a location i finally on the show today real football this weekend to college football games tomorrow night i do not have in initial smell test selection for either miami versus florida or <hes> arizona versus hawaii. Get double header tomorrow night. It's actually i mean doubleheader. Most of you aren't gonna stay up for arizona hawaii on c._b._s. Sports network but you do you get from orlando. <hes> the university of miami <hes> with their new coach. Manny diaz against eighth ranked florida team that i really like. I liked him last year too i am. I think they've got a chance to be a really good football team and be one of those teams in the s._e._c. It could potentially win the s._e._c. east and have a chance at bama. You know perhaps in the s._e._c. Title game to get to a playoff spot. I think florida's that good <hes> defensively they lost some guys lost that guy polite who i loved <hes> they've got some talent though defensively and hopefully finally sleep a franks who was really one of the top quarterbacks in the country when he came out of high school if he can start it to play a little bit like he played at the end of last year in florida's got a shot to be a really good football team this year so it's our first chance to see a top ten team an s._e._c. team that finished incredibly strong last year they crushed michigan remembering the chick-fil-a beach <hes> peach bowl by the way that was a smell test peck pick if i if i remember remember correctly but anyway they've got a good team back you know they got that running back p ryan back. They've got francs back. They've got one of their receivers back as well and they've got some defensive talent for sure going to be an interesting team. I mean they really finished strong last year. <hes> in the first year <hes> under under mullen <hes> and i like their team i mean they start off with a game against miami. Miami's not ranked preseason right. Am i right about that. I don't think they're ranked <hes> this year. I think you're right <hes> they might be in the low in the twentieth somewhere. They're not supposed to be that good in d. as first year but i like mullen i i thought when mullen got the job at florida he turned the gators around and we'll see they've got a they've got a favorable start. Think did the schedule you know with with this game on a neutral field. They've got kentucky you on the road tennessee at home their first real test i guess tomorrow night is a real test but their first real test comes early october..

"It's gonna take them some time is is a big athletic dude and i don't know that he played poorly on every play <hes> it's hard for us to tell that when it comes to offensive line and d line play and what their responsibilities ability art cetera <hes> but you know eric flowers looks like a question mark last night on this roster right now and i would also tell you even though it's a preseason game but this is one of the things i always sort of pick up on when it happens and i want j to become better at this and it's it's a preseason and you don't have to get super alarmed by it but when they got the ball back at the end of the half they had two timeouts good field position at the thirty two yard line with i think forty three seconds left they ran a play where they dumped it off to chris thompson and he lost a yard or two and the next time they took a snap was with seventeen seconds left in the half and they threw it. You know you can't do that. It's a preseason practice clock management once chris thompson got tackled in play. That's a time out right there. That is a timeout now. You've got thirty seven seconds thirty six seconds to take your second down snap with stole. A timeout left instead. They snapped with seventeen seconds left left so you basically lost eighteen to twenty seconds you can't do that. She's not been good at this before we were told to kevin o'connell was going to be a bigger part of this <hes>. We're going to be watching this all season long. It's the preseason but what do you have to lose to practice good clock management in a preseason game at the end of the half with with the guy you want to be your quarterback in the opener trying to get field goal range with the kicker who was exceptional last night had already made his first two ended up making two more in the second in half indoors. All you got to get to the forty yard line for this guy to give him a shot. You know so you're only at that point twenty five yards thirty thirty yards away from field goal range. Gotta leave yourself with some time you can't take a snap at forty three seconds and then have the next snap com at seventeen seconds accounts can't do that got to understand how to manage the clock to increase the opportunity that you will have more plays plays to try to get points on the board. Is it better aaron at the end of a half when you're on offense to have more plays or less place <hes> i'm gonna say more plays. That's the right answer. That's the right answer. It's something that for the life of me so many coaches have never been enabled figure out in jay gruden. I hate to say it is one of those coaches never been able to figure out how to use his time outs the right way. At the end of a half it is better to have more opportunities to run.

"Through their national contacts not local contacts. That's been a given under this regime from the start. I mean the owner owned the radio station asian that i worked for for fourteen for twelve years all right. We were the rights holding flagship for that station and we never got anything from them. When they leak they leaked to national guys not local guys most of the reporters in this market know that and understand surprised that anybody would suggest the the possibility that the redskins would leak something through me or anybody else locally. They've never done it before certainly not through me and i don't think they ever will to be honest with you anyway. Anyway i stand by what i said yesterday and as i predicted it was in everyone's best interest to deny which is what i expected and that's fine. They should deny <hes> also by the way you know enough about that but i will also say that. I think they should trade him. I think it's clear that the the redskins may consider trading reading them and hopefully bruce will be patient and wait for a blockbuster opportunity. I actually think so far from my perspective. He's handling this pretty well. Oh but you know this has to finish well before any of us. Give give real credit to him anyway. Let's get to the game tech. They they attention kevin this game day. This was you know what they liked to refer to is. The all important third preseason game the dress rehearsal game which really actually gotten to the point where you know a lot of these n._f._l. Teams aren't playing starters even in this game anymore. The falcons did on offense and defense a lot of their starters anyway. Julio jones wasn't out there but you know calvin ridley was out there and hooper was out there and matt ryan was out there and so new is out there and mckinley was out there they they had a lot of their starters the redskins you know we saw the what we believe to be the starters right now as they will be pegged in on opening day against the eagles. Let me mention one thing about the eagles game. I said yesterday i think i said it on the podcast. I know i said it on the radio. Show i like the redskins in the opener against that's the hills and so i played them yesterday plus nine and what i noticed this morning erin is it was down eight and a half. There's some sharp money coming in on the redskins for the opener. It's not an indication of the way i feel about the season. I just think there might be an opportunity in week one anyway. The big takeaway from the game last night is that case keenum went out there with the starters play full half with basically the starters and then came out after halftime enjoying haskins went in and played with the backups and so that's a clear cut indication of john told me on the radio station yesterday her day and that is the case keenum is going is going to start or it certainly at the very least a clear indication that case keenum is ahead of joint haskins and so unless cole mccoy comes back and get super healthy..

See to just me and Paul ranting each other about the role of the government and check us out on Tuesdays. When I have seen every episode. Subscribe verse wherever podcasts reserved, we'll see them. And we're back on the falcons podcast with Gina Thomas. Eric Robinson and Kevin night talking about the falcons two thousand nineteen draft class. We just talked about high state quarterback kindle Sheffield who was taken in the fourth round by the falcons. Let's talk about their next fourth round pick. And now this Charleston defensive in John Kaminsky. This guy has some interesting attributes to him he. Am let you guys get to this in a second. But he is a big boy he's six five to eighty five to ninety in that range. He is the he's got the sort of the Bill that you know, the falcons like in their defensive lineman. He ran a four six nine forty our dashboard, which for that size is pretty impressive. Just over seven seconds in the three cone drill which is again, really good athleticism. This is a guy that even though the he didn't play at the highest levels in college. A lot of people five he could be asleep or pick for being a developmental guy because of just the sheer athleticism that is makes him stand out in the crowd. So Eric go you first on this guy. What are your thoughts on the falcons taking him? John Kaminski in the fourth round of the draft class require. Honest with you when it comes to the selection of Kaminsky, I was probably as equally excited about this pick as some people were with the first round picks along I think Kamensky is is a diamond in a rough and in the fourth round. That's when you start the teams take a shot on those were all players that you you can be able to moat later on down the line and Kaminsky is one of those guys like you mentioned he six five two hundred eighty six pounds ran a four six nine at the combine. But he also has seventy nine seven nine inch wingspan and he had a four point three eight twenty yard shuttle, which is incredible or a guy almost three hundred pounds. That's pretty damn the again, he's right now, I think he's, you know, strictly strong side divas event with ability to kick in on the interior on passing downs. In Russia in the interior like, you said the level competition is you know, it is is a big red flag to most teams, you know, when you look at the little bit of film that he asked he's dominating the Lebanon. He slowing office limelight. Right. Not to mention was a lot of people don't know as he came to the cost Charleston. As adults quarterback though. Oh, How? hell. Threat quarterback who two hundred ninety pound beef in who's throwing office of Lima left-right again, he's a diamond in a rough. I think you give him a year. And I would not be surprised if in a year from now this guy is you know, able to to create pressure consistently possibly get seven or eight sacks. I saw interesting comparison with him someone compared him to Jared Allah or Vikings defense event. And I think that's an interesting comparison because again both came from small schools both or low rough around the edges when it comes to their skill sets. But you know, given time they were able to you know, they were able to to showcase what they can do best in that's in its right and cause pressure. So get like, I said Comiskey should be, you know, level your expectations for me twenty nineteen. I think he will be potted a rotation in twenty nineteen but Wayne. Twenty twenty and I think we can really re benefits. Awesome. Ginny. Your thoughts on Kaminsky. You know, David. I love a good bargain. And if you're getting a player like Kamensky of late in the fourth round that is a bargain, I'm a big fan fills a need. I think his ceiling is very high. He has the athleticism in the speed that tan loves, you know, he loves people to be fast fastened, physical. That's kamensky..

"Nell swear up in San Francisco to everyone McKinnon guts, I know they gave McKinnon a contract, but you know, familiarity with Cal Shanahan in McKinnon little injury there. You know, I think he'll go somewhere in definitely be good. I think the falcons will miss him less than they miss. Like you were mentioning clayborn. I think left the bigger hole in the falcons expected where Coleman leaving. I think the falcons will be fine. I don't see that. As a big issue. Getting Freeman back as long as healthy. Yeah. I think that's the best way to see. He's he he will have a good career elsewhere. If he is used properly, I think if you want him to be a guy that just runs between the tackles every single game. You're not using improperly. You know, getting him out in space getting him involved in the passing game. Like he has certain things about him. That are really really really good. But he also has limitations. I think if you don't try to coach around those limitations, you're not gonna get the best player out of him. But we'll see where does obviously team has some decisions to make some other guys. And we may have seen some final games without can uniforms. But I think we'll have some returns like, Bruce. And I think he'll be back at think that they'll be back. Yeah. He does. He really well down the stretch in house one exact guys in in the league. And you're probably going to get him. We talked about this last week where he he's been productive even with his age. He's been productive. You could argue he's been maybe the silent darkhorse MPP on the defensive line. Just because you know, I'm a big Jack. Offered fan. So he's already wanted in. My is obviously, but grew servants, you know, he he didn't really need a learning curve when he stepped in. 'cause he hasn't been with the falcons all season the raiders cut him. And then he ended up with the falcons, and he took I I can't remember who it was he passed on. I think it was the patriots. And I don't know I wanna say like the eagles, but that's probably wrong. But he took he he went to Atlanta because he he's he took the hometown discount pretty much. He wanted to go home. And he finally is in he's used to Dan Quinn. I don't imagine. He's gonna want, you know, buco bucks to remain falcon, I think they'd get a pretty friendly deal with them. So I would be he would be the free agent where I'd be. I mean, taking Grady Jared out of the question. I would be shocked if Irvine's not back with the team. Yeah. I think that's the most likely spot for him to land. I mean, he succeeded here. He's back. I don't think he's gonna wanna. Try to find a whole nother team. And I think the team will give him a fair deal. I think there's plenty of money to bring preserving that guy. I'm not really I don't think he'll get more than five million on the open market. And I imagined the Brooks read is going to be a cap casualty. That's one early prediction making who they'll try to take some of Reed's money and give it to urban to make sure these back. So I imagine that's where that's going to go. But we'll have much more later in the season about what they'll do with these offseason moves, but you know, one last thought I'll have about the Tampa Bay game. So we get into the coaching things that have been made at I think that it showed the steam still believes in the culture in still believes in the brotherhood mentality. The Quintas put in place because if I'm being very blunt here this team had nothing to play for them to come out and have such a comeback. Like, this means that they trust our coach. And I think this team has been very open vocal about their belief in Dan Quinn that they realized amp quince belief in them. I think sometimes I get Quint peg it's. Trouble when he puts way too much faith in a guy that doesn't need to be out there. And I think that's something Quinn is gonna learn more into his career as a head coaches at. That's not always the best way to do it. But you know, I really I believe in Dan Clinton. Always will. I think he's a wonderful head coach. I think he has limitations like any head coach does than I imagined that you know there..

"I mean going into the season, I think everybody bucks fans, look that the division and thought that you know, the bucks would definitely be the worst than then that the same of the falcons on the Panthers would you know, sort of battle it out for the top three spots, and they were all potential playoff teams the now boy the falcons on the Panthers are bad. And so that was unexpected. And not a lot of fun for anybody. And I do think it is worth pointing out that both teams have suffered injuries throughout the season. Some pretty significant, you know, the falcons injuries are pretty well documented the Panthers I think suffered quite a few on the offensive line very early in the season, which arguably could could have been a big contributor to Cam Newton's getting banged up throughout this season. So let's talk about this game though. This is interesting falcons are five nine the Panthers are six eight. So a win by the falcons, essentially ties them, but would put the falcons ahead because they would have the better NFC south records to the falcons with actually the. Have the potential to finish second in the NFC south, which I don't know that that's something. Either team wants this point because they're essentially playing the sells out of draft position if they win this game, but that's a completely different conversation. So let's talk about the falcons offense going up against this Panthers defense, and to me this is one of the this is interesting because Brian last week, even though it was a loss. The pit Thor's defense actually held New Orleans to twelve points in Carolina. They they really really stymied that normally high scoring explosive saints offense. So what was the story there? What finally clicked that that defense showed up in the big way against the division rival? Well, the secondary showed up number one. Dante Jackson had himself a really good game as the Panthers second round pick from this year. They managed to get forced turnovers. They got they had a couple on top of the. Two point conversion return by Dante Jackson, which turned into two points for the Panthers. Front seven wasn't all that great. They still managed to get after breeze a little bit. But for the most part, it was just a it was just a herculean effort by lewke cly who had one of his best games ever. And the secondary finally playing up to what they seemed like they had the potential to be earlier in the season..

"It feels like it's been a couple years, but not that dramatically but the team had lost five straight games. Which is a very long time in the football was five or six straight games. I think it was five straight because you had Cleveland cowboy saints ravens Packers. Yeah. It was five. It was really really dramatic slide from that Washington game. Which feels like it's been a long time since we remember that. They just they early November. Yeah. It was November four. It was it was rough. And it's been some time. We've been wondering what has been going on? They have been playing terribly end Sunday. Like, you just you know, how it's gonna go you kinda hope they'll play well, and they win by a lot. They won by forty two fourteen. That's a that's a lot of points. You know, I'm not much of a math person. But I can tell you forty is bigger than fourteen a different year. The falcons scored twenty six points by the first half us conclusion paste it out in the set for the third and fourth with touchdown each tell you win held the team that was visiting scoreless in the second third quarters and Bhagat garbage time touchdown but other than that. It's basically a complete and total shutdown a probably the worst team in the NFL. Let's not call the Oakland Raiders. But evan. No, you you saw what happened. You were surveying. What was going on with these falcons? What gave them the wherewithal to be able to win this game? I mean overall it was just a good team. It's like what you want from your team. The defense finally showed up which was nice Dion Jones had a pick six and then the defense finished with seven six total. So like, I mean, that's what falcons fans have been wanting all year, actually, probably all last year two was the defensive show up. You know, you kinda take it with a grain of salt, though, not to be Debbie Downer. But it was like you said probably I I mean, you can make an argument they're probably the worst team in the NFL like even even with you know, teams like the jets in the raiders cardinals might be the worst. But you know, like, I said grain of salt with this. But this is like the formula for what you expect. You know, if the falcons defense plays like this every week in the offense where Matt Ryan was you know, basically like his twenty sixteen. Self. I believe if you look at his stats from twenty sixteen compared to this year. It's like near identical main be better this year, but he had two touchdowns. And then he had that rushing touchdown. The run game finally woke up, you know, the falcons have had probably the worst. I know statistically, it's been the worst run run game this year and then Coleman like exploded for over one hundred yards and scored, and you know, even ITO before, you know, checking out he he got tears too. So then Julio having Julio days where like you don't even remember when you know, it was a thing before it was like oh Julio isn't catching touchdowns. Now. It's like he's got them every week. It seems like so he had a Julio day even just in hardy scored. So I mean it was like a perfect game. I know like a bunch of fans wanted the falcons detained for. Believe they were in the driver's seat for the third pick in the draft if they would've lost, but you know, you end up winning. And now, I believe you're the six or seven. So you know, you're talking about maybe an elite player either way. But at the same time you kind of want that high drastic. But at the same time, you know, you gotta feel good about a win. Even if it's you know, you would have been okay if they lost. Here's my thing with my you bring up a lot of good points. I think that it's fun to think about tanking, and obviously they lose this game. And the cardinals win they're probably looking at top three pick. I hate to be the guy that breaks it down for you..

"Gentlemen. Welcome to another fine. Addition of the post game podcast. My name is Corey Woodruff. Thanks for stopping by. The falcons are terrible. Unfortunately, at seems to be the case and falcon the now is the team stands at a very unsatisfying for an eight after quite a tumultuous year with injuries poor coaching even worse play and lots of annoying losses, which piled up the team has lost four straight. And they're trying to figure out exactly what's going on. What's working what's not working? And really what in the world. They're going to do as the last four games of the year began to enter as we get into December. So I'm joined by no stranger to the show. He's a good friend of mine a wonderful person to hear from with anything falcons related and the biggest Jack Crawford fan out. There has name is Evan burchfield. He's joining us today. Evan. Thank you so much for coming on. I appreciate having me on core. Yeah. We are always happy to have been on the show, and we'll have a special little of news about Evan. When we get done the recording this one, but you know, let's just get into this Baltimore game as much as we can. You know, what what to you Evan? Did you see about this game that really kind of showed exactly where this team is right now? I mean, everything was too bad like everything offense of line. Play was bad. The falcons run game was bad. Julio Jones was bad. Maybe not all his fault. But I mean two receptions for eighteen yards is not normally the production. You get from Leo Jones. Mahama's new had his first ever incompletion passing completion. So that pretty much sums it up. Yeah. I think that's just kind of the difficult part of where we are. Right now is that this team is an very languished place. They've just not exactly the naval to overcome lot of these injuries. And they've really kind of compiled down with really poor defensive play. And the offense really was good for half a season. And then in the month of November. They kinda began to taper out a little bit too that Washington game. And they've really just not been great. Honestly, the last couple of games, and it's been really kind of disconcerting to see them. Take such a sizable step back offensively under such a promising stretched there in September October in into that Washington game. But you know, I think right now, this is just a team that doesn't really have a spark. They don't really have just any sort of momentum going for them. And when you're working with little momentum. You're going to have little success..

"Well, if they're struggling or he can make them struggle because he's got some really good pass. Rush moves for being such a big player on the ravens. He's incredibly powerful. I remember his first year. The the broadcasters were showing just how strong is he's one of the strongest on the team if not the strongest he does head like a seven hundred pound squat video going around waiting. So he is a tighten up front and right beside brain Williams. Who's one of the best run stopping defensive tackles Li I think that's gonna be the big man to watch on defense. If not Marlon Humphrey just because of his talent at cornerback. And when Jimmy Smith's getting all the attention it's been Marlon Humphrey who's producing quite well. All right for me. I am going to go with demonic Z. I think the falcons defense is going to have any success on Sunday. They're going to have to hope for either forcing turnover or they're gonna need their safeties to come in and help with. Keeping an eye on Jackson and helping to slow down the run. And I think that's going to start with Casey who leads the league interceptions. He has been a revelation this year for the falcons after losing Ricardo Ellen's injury. And I think he is a guy that is is going to be absolutely critical. If the falcons have any chance in this game he is going to be the one to watch out for for the falcons. So I do on a think Kyle for joining us Kyle do have to tell you. Because again, our listeners will not forgive me. If I don't bring this up, but Willie Snead all you have to do is Google Willie. Snead Kiana Neil to see why Willie Snead may not be looking forward to coming back to Georgia anytime. Stole his soul is somewhere still in the the old Georgia Dome which has been buried so. It was Willie Snead survived. It's yes. I mean, he laid him out you could you late on that head? And this is coming from who's done nothing. But roast the falcons for yourself that is saying something, I you know, I believe you believe you have to look it up because it's it's the stuff of legend amongst falcons fans with the way key on the killing those been known for big hits. But that was what in where I was actually in the stadium when the hit happened when the hit happened. It was so loud. So audible the entire stadium went silent. Because everyone everyone literally thought that someone had been killed this. This was it. This was the this is the the murder in the most recent NFL era have been that have been something. "Five oh podcast has a Twitter account. But make sure you're following RJ Joa in Tony Casillas to great guys doing a lot of work as long as Michael size more time rile all the guys applauding the boys. Do a great job on the good over there. So make sure you're following along. Reading or workover blogging the boys mixture, you're liking the podcast describing the podcast commenting, reviewing whatever you gotta do to make sure we keep the Stangl and do it. All right. So before we get going. Preview in this game for you guys. The Atlanta Falcons injury report looks great pretty much the only people who showed up that worked in a full fashion. Derrick Shelby limited Muhammed. Sohn? New limited. Demonte Z limited Dion Jones LTd. Bruce Carter familiar face. Limited in devante Campbell. Limited all of those guys are likely going to play the the big name. There's going to be Dion Jones. This would be his first game back after suffering that a fifth metatarsal injury that he that he had the beginning of the year, you guys expect obviously this is kind of a tour question, but you don't expect Dion Jones to be a hundred percent the old Dionne Jones that we're used to write you kinda expect him to be a little bit heavy coming out game. So maybe just a a slower lesser snap game than we're used to from seeing from Dion Jones Dalton what do you think? That injury scares me. Not scares me. Because he's playing us. The Cowboys not us like I'm not a part of the team. But I coming off of it. Yeah. I don't really worry about it too much. I mean, he how he's been out for what nine nine weeks eight weeks nine weeks, something like that. It's seems quick doesn't it? Yeah. I mean just that injury. We've seen has has been has had a lingering effect on people. So I think that they're gonna kind of take it easy with him. So I'm not real worried about you know, how he's gonna play. I don't think he's going to absolutely ball out and be that old beyond Jones that we've seen because his game is predicated upon speed and quickness, and I don't think that he's gonna be one hundred percent to be that player. Coal. Are you all worried about Dion Jones in his his production that he's gonna have on Sunday? Do you think it'll be I'm not gonna say he's going to be a liability on the field. But maybe you'll have a player you can take advantage of due to his rustiness. Yeah. He could be a player that Cowboys could scheme against in try to take advantage of. He is good player when healthy we know it he can do. And he's one hundred percent, but yeah, coming off an injure this week and everything if you're playing the falcons in a later day didn't meet every story, but this week I wouldn't be too concerned over him. But I don't think he's a player you can just rule out of making a player to in a game. And I know they're all in limited fashion, but you can look at the linebackers for the falcons Campbell who's a starter. Jones who would be a starter if he hadn't missed most of the year due to the injury. And then like I said the familiar face Bruce Carter has played a somewhat of a role for them this year. All three of those guys are limited. So they're pretty banged up at linebacker in. They don't defend the run good to begin with. So that should boat right into what the Cowboys wanna do on offense. And that's run the football. You would think. So at least again, it depends on how they block it. It depends on how they scheme it. But you know, a team being not saying being without three of their best linebackers, but then being banked up that is a good sign for the running game. What they can do all the ground. But let's move on from this injury report. Let's talk about what's important. And that's how the Cowboys match up with the falcons again both of these teams coming in or. No, still guess you could say they're still technically individuals even though the falcons probably hurt of due to the saints being as good as they are. But both teams are still in the thick of things..

"And like, look I'd the big as a basket, and I think for him, especially with the with the kicker you have to be able to you have to have the confidence where you're not grind. And you're thinking about as much because once you start doing that then it because two much two months, psychological. And then you're gonna do you doubt yourself. And then also you have to do different things, if you you don't really have a lot of confidence in your in your kicker, some things you may not do which in the long run may help because it gives you chance to make make riskier decisions, you know, you mentioned that those points could have been costly against philli. Totally. Agreed. I also applying the proper context here. I think Brett deserves a pass to a degree on the key missed in Washington. Because it was the one at the end of the game after the snap and fraction penalty in whatever. So I mean, I'm willing to look past that one the more concerning Cape that he's missed so far was against Tennessee. That was that was no win that was early. Pour. It felt like everything was great. So while again, I don't think there's any need to smash the glass and pull the lever here. I think this does bear monitoring especially in a game like this. This is going to be a very very high scoring game. In all likelihood the Cowboys you're gonna need every single point just to keep track with the falcons again, they've scored at least thirty points in four out of their five games on the road this season. The Cowboys have not broken twenty-seven points. They just scored twenty seven last week that was their season high on the road. So if this gets to be game involved in the thirties right now logic suggests that the Cowboys don't necessarily have the wherewithal to to go blow for blow with the falcons. Let's let's let's let's not beating around the Bush. Let's pick this game. You know, because I think that we we believe in the Cowboys to degree, and it's I think before we pick. I'll ask you this. What is larger your belief in the falcons or your doubt that the Cowboys can actually put it together for a second week in a row? What what emotion is driving you more. Whether it's again, man, I really liked those falcons, dude. I don't know these countless other. I'm just like everyone else. I think for me it's the belief in the Cowboys because I need to see more need to see this team. Put two wins together in a row. And we haven't seen that we got we started with one. And and I guess the second point and probably why pick my bo- prediction was that Prescott have more passing touchdowns. And Matt Ryan because if he does get in the thirties and thirty fives that means this offense is going to have to push the. You know, put put the pedal and really accelerate on the offense aside the ball. And so to me that's kind of what I'm really am. I may concern is if you get into a shootout because that's what that's what the Val comes to. But I think more more AM real apprehensive. Because I doubt that I haven't Dallas not that. I have now I think they can I think they can do it will they do it. I don't know because we're lack of Vetter. Thanks. Thanks breakdown. There's things that they don't duplicate or they don't play up to that type of level. You know, things may go bad, and they changed their whole philosophy. There has really hasn't been a body of work consistency. So that's where my doubt is for is more. What else may do may not do? I agree. I I doubt the Cowboys more than I believe in the falcons. I don't know that the falcons are a good team right now in the National Football League. But I think they might be good enough team to beat the Cowboys because the Cowboys sometimes play down in situations like this. So it is time to pick. Why what everybody's calling?.

"And so one thing that I know for certain as there's a team that can deliver hardy more consistently than the Atlanta Falcons. It's the Cleveland Browns. I remember my brother was here. The last time the falcons play the Browns came down for the game and the Browns actually one and that was a time when I was like Brown sake as live, and then I was totally wrong. So I hesitate to make any kind of broad proclamations. But I do think that this is a very beatable Brown team. So yeah, I mean, they they do have some talented pieces. I think they may feel it has a lot of potential actually I really like him as a young quarterback. I do think that Greg Williams is kind of an idiot. And so I don't know how all that's gonna. Out. But I mean, you know, they've got some really good pieces on defense to you know, it I think that they're not really a bad team. I think that this is a team that's a couple years away from really being competitive, and that's only if they have consistency along like among the coaching staff, and they let her Mayfield actually stay the quarterback and don't like decide to draft somebody with personal pick again this year. Take over for him. So yeah, the the Browns are not known for consistency. So if they let the next coaching staff have some consistency Mayfield continued to develop I think that they you know, they've got a ton of talent have the potential to be good. But as they are right now, this is a very beatable team. Excellent Eric how do you see this falcons defense matching up against this young offense? I think they met up pretty well. Cross the more, you know, the the Browns while they are tunes on offense. You know, they don't really have that stood outside receiver that the falcons had to worry about earlier this year like, you know, AJ green or. I mean germs Landry is is a is a receiver or receiver plan in a slot. But again, he doesn't necessarily break defenses in. I think the team can be able to to match up. Well in the passing game is gonna come down to the run game in my they're. And they're gonna have to slow down his run game. Because this. This Cleveland disclaimer offense, they average close to a hundred twenty five rushing yards per game. This is really gonna come down to which run game prevails the most out of both teams. And if they're able to bog down the run game for the Browns. And you know, if it was kind of weird to say this. But may Baker Mayfield throw thirty forty times. I think they'll be all right. Let's flip the script. Let's talk about this Browns defense, which arguably has some really intriguing pieces back there including first round pick from last year. Myles Garrett who I think has nine sacks on the year. He is in absolute frequent athlete kinda scared about going up against this offense of line..

"So it really feels like this was the right kind of signing. Eric, I know you, and I had gone back and forth little bit about you know, who the falcons should assigned you'd earlier in the year. We were hoping they would sign some defensive help on the back end, maybe a safety or two or linebacker. Do you feel like now in hindsight that getting urban really without having to give up any picks just picking him up as a free agent, you feel that was a best case scenario for this team. Absolutely. We know that draft capital is a premium two two guys like Thomas Mitchell, Dan Quinn. So the option was on the table because rumors have rooms were Sperling couple of weeks ago that you know, the the raiders wanted to part with urban and get draft picks in exchange. So I me personally, I would not have minded giving giving Oakland of six round pick for urban simply because I didn't think they were actually gonna cut them. I think that that caught me that release comprise mill little bit known that they were gonna cut him at this point of the season. So once he was current. I mean, this is this is a prime example while why you can't dispel a player wanting to come home under favorable circumstances. You have more money in in New England more money pits. Herb it more money in Francisco, but he wanted to come home in wanted to play for hometown and to intake price cuts. So I know. Oh player all about the money. But we when we know situations like this circumstances like this. We can't really just brush it under the table and think of players go for the greenback's everyday. Gene, it on that note. You know, you've mentioned that he took less money to be here. How much of a factor? Do you think? The Dan Quinn was in urban wanting to be in Atlanta. I think it was just kind of perfect storm of things. I mean, Atlanta is home for him. He does have a great relationship with Quinn. And again, like, I think that you know, we've talked at nauseam about all the intangible things that I think makes them Quanta great coach and has built this into a release spectacular culture that players want to be a part of. And then also he comes in knowing the scheme, so he can really hit the ground running in this first week. I think that those are all really motivating factors. I think also if you look objectively at Atlanta's pass rushing Eric mentioned this by here, he has a potential to come in here and really be a star like really be a Sar because Vic I think he is still asleep. Somebody might want to check on them because it's been like since two thousand sixteen he's. On on there. But probably not good. I don't think you're I think you're supposed to wake up occasionally between now and then. No, you know, if you if you think about him on the field tack I think that could be a relief for medical situation or or toback. So I think that that's probably a draw to you know, I think that he knows he has tension come here and be sort of the linchpin in a defensive turnaround and manifest Dombak. Just I I mean, I don't even know what say about it. I'm so excited about it. And that's really the other exciting news. We got this week was Dion Jones has started practicing, which means he would be eligible to come back as soon as next week's game the game at home against the Dallas Cowboys, obviously, I think the falcons are gonna take their time easing him back in in Gina think we did find out that it was a broken foot. Right. That was the. Okay. So that actually I think is good news because breaks are usually pretty clean healing pattern that you can check on and not really run any risks as opposed to ligament damage or anything of that sort. So again as long as you have bone growth and everything I mean, a foot brake said he'll pretty easily as long as it's not too severe. We were worried that it was her toe, and it was turf toe that if it was her toe that was serious enough to require surgery that was going to be a totally different situation..

"So let's go ahead and move on and talk about some of the big news of this week heading into the game against the Browns, which will talk about and just a little bit. And that is the surprise or maybe not surprised. Signing of Bruce Irvin to the falcons roster on the one year contract a little bit confusing. People saw that he got a three point two million dollar deal that it's it's a three point two million salary. He will actually only be paid about one point five million by the falcons this year that will be his cap hit since he's only gonna be able to play eight games in the falcons uniform. But Eric I'm going to start with you first. You actually did a write up this week at the falcons dot com about Bruce Irvin. How he fits in this defense? A bit about how important do you think this signing is doesn't move the needle for this defense? Whether overall thoughts on getting urban in red and black. I I think is absolutely moves the needle for the defense. You know, it gives them that veteran closer closer at pass rusher. An s something that they really been lacking for or allow now, you know, they got tech McKinley who had a good start to the season. The last couple of games. He's been kinda quiet in the, you know, outside of gray Jared in jet Crawford getting pressure on the interior is really been nothing to write home about about the pass rushing department for the falcons, and of course, big Beasley is still taking a nap. For the past season in half. So bring him Bruce urban in my opinion, gives a team of veteran as Russia who has speed and who can play to Leo in mixed things up a little bit. I mean, there's a potential to have a very quick and fierce pass rushing combination on the field, especially third downs with tack in urban in Grady, Jared Jack Crawford solicited. Dan quinn. Does with this. I think he likes to have. He likes her have possibilities in. He likes the versatility at every level in defense and bringing in urban provides net. Yeah. Ginny. Your thoughts on urban being a falcon now. While you know, usually if I want the falcons ran a player, they're like LL now. And so this was one of those cases where I was like, hey, it would be just amazing. They picked up reserve in its position of need if he clears waivers. Maybe they'll be able to come for cheap because he has an existing relationship Quinn. I didn't think it was going to happen. And you know, I just thought that he would want more money than the falcons would be able to pay not even willing to pay able to pay and it turned out that he turned on more money or to come here. And that's pretty amazing. I think that speaks really wonderful things about what Dan Quinn has built in Atlanta. And I'm thrilled about it. I mean, he really could be the difference between this team being contender down the stretch. And not. And so I'm thrilled about it yet. And I think if you look at the next few games coming up falcons fans who had written off the season. I self included when they were sitting at one and four. They're four four they're going up to Cleveland, which looks like a very winnable game. Again, we'll talk about that in just a little bit. They come home to face the Cowboys. And then they go on the road against New Orleans, which is obviously one of the hottest teams in the NFC right now reasonably I don't think it's a stretch to say that the falcons could be six and four going into New Orleans and others a significantly better position to be in. So someone like Irvine could be the difference between. Shutting down, you know, drive for a team like New Orleans or a team like the Cowboys it before, you know, they're able to turn that into one of those long extended drives that's really sort of define the defense this year..

"falcons" Discussed on The Falcoholic

"Official podcast, if your favorite falcons fan site, the falcons. I am DWI as always. I'm joined by my co host the June Pedder of dogs. I of her name the dinners, Gary. In the falcons Twitter, the quick draw McGraw Facebook, Facebook messenger, the trash talker, supreme. She who will not be bossed. Gina, Matt online, Thomas, Gina, how're you doing. Undoing. Great, David, thank you for asking, how are you. I am out of breath because your name is getting too long at this point. Yeah, it's pretty long. And Anita work on cardio joining us today for the podcast, we actually have two guests, and I'm very excited about this. So I, she is the managing editor of NCWA team branch from SP nation and a contributor at streaking. Lawn also happens to be a Pittsburgh Steelers fan and that is Caroline darney, Caroline. How are you doing really well. Thanks for having me on, and I feel like I need to add a few things to my introduction. Study out for next time because that was something else. It's it's jarring the first time you hear trying to keep up. Now. I need to remember to follow up with her about Facebook messaging, but that's neither here nor there we can do that. Indeed. In also joining us. He has been on every podcast in the falcons universe except for the one for his own freaking site. We finally got him the comeback on in others, the one and only the falcons can self. Dave, Dave, how's Cohen on the falcons dot are you ought cast is is pretty good. That's probably a real thing, and there's some guys in the middle of Moscow. We're like, oh, chilled. So anyhow, that's offensive. Dave is big with the Ukrainians either they're big fans of Dave. So. Let's get right into it. Obviously, before we jump into this weekend's game, falcons going up to Pittsburgh to take on the Steelers. Let's talk a little bit about the two teams and what they are coming in from. Unfortunately, both teams are coming in with some losses. Let's start first with Pittsburgh who believe they were home against the Joe flacco. I'm sorry, the Baltimore Ravens and lost that game twenty six to fourteen. So Caroline. What happened in the game? Can you give us a quick synopsis of, you know, again, when the storied rivalries in the NFL, what was the difference in that game? Second half having the play it I think was the biggest thing. No one really told the Steelers there was the second half, so they were like tied. So the fell behind fourteen nothing like lickety-split right out the gate, and I was like, oh, this is going to be fun. I used to work in Baltimore and as a Steelers fan and someone who went to university of Virginia and someone who likes the Red Sox a military, brat, calm down. I have reasons. Chill out. So that's a good reason. Be living there with all those things. Obviously don't match with any of the local Maryland Baltimore things. So it was real nightmare for awhile. I hate the ravens and the Steelers just look like crap in the second half in literally did nothing like I just I don't even know this team. One two and one is just embarrassing. Like we've seen record is the Browns, which Duke odd. You look at it like, I'm fine to find. They lost to the fighting Patrick Mahomes in a shootout. That's what happens. I guess it's just going to be thing that is going on this season, which cool. Cool. Cool. But just the second half of that game against the ravens was just flat. They couldn't get anything going. The defense manage to make the ravens offense. Look like they're full of the best athletes in the history of the universe, getting trill. Remember they have flacco well, and there. Oh, man. I have like whole thing's about like Lamar Jackson is just a delightful human being a phenomenal player in watching them like try us him in a while. I don't even know what they're doing with him. Like when they put him out there except trying to get him hit and the Steelers tackling him in like he should be on the Steelers because they didn't draft him with the pick right before him. It just was there getting beat on every route the offense. Big, Ben look like he'd just had a huge five guys meal at the half. You have..
