"Yeah. And just because they're the last on the list, the Wallace Collection band. Were you aware of UFO in the 70s? I was. They weren't like they were the perennial opening band. They never headlined. Right, right. Yeah. That's exactly right. They made some second tier. Yeah. Bands that broke up in 1968. A couple, not a lot. A Buffalo Springfield broke up in 68. Cream broke up in 68. Freddie and the Dreamers broke up in 68, but they were left over from the 50s, weren't they? That was a British invasion. Was it? Yeah. I sent you guys with, they had to do the Fray. Do the Fray. Goofy, they were goofy, man. The Righteous Brothers broke up in 1968. In 68? Yeah. Oh, wow. Holy shit. They didn't, well, they were on point. The Seekers broke up in 68. The Shangri-La's, the Yardbirds. What's that? My favorite are over. The Shangri-La's? Yeah. The Yardbirds broke up and then reformed in 92. And the Zombies broke up and reformed in 91. Mark, give me an album from 1968. Let's see. I'm gonna hit you with a deep one. The Thoughts of Emerliss Davjak by The Nice, which was Keith Emerson's band before ELP. That was their debut album. Ah, okay. All right. Lou? The Notorious Bird Brothers. Yes. That was The Birds. That was their country rock album. You fucking guys are the kings of obscure. I got more. Wait, I got more for you. Oh, I'm sure you do. And then I'm gonna go with the straight up fucking Steppenwolf with their debut album. Steppenwolf came out in 68. Every band in the 70s, every young starting band played Born Every Wild. Right? Oh, God, yeah. And then you really got me. Yeah. Steppenwolf. Mark? Journey to the Center of the Mind by Ted Nugent and the Amboy Dukes. Oh, wow. There you go. Run along if you can. The Amboy Dukes. And he had his guitar up like right under his chin. When I was a kid, I always thought they were from my area because two towns were two towns, Perth Amboy and South Amboy. So I'm like, yeah, they're like from around here. Weeks of Jersey, Amboy, yeah. Michigan. Lou? The Graduate. Soundtrack? Oh, by John Coltrane came out. Ha ha. Yeah. An album. Shades of Deep Purple, their debut with Hush, and they also did a great cover of Help by the Beatles on that. Ah, all right, Lou? Mass in F minor by the Electric Prunes. Okay. You know what their big hit was? What? I had too much to dream last night. This album, what they did, they took a mass and they sang it in English and Latin and performed this whole weird suite of songs. Jesus. And they said, the guy said they did a performance. Their only performance was like a disaster. They actually said everything went wrong. Amps blew, the music sheets fell off the, it was just a total train wreck, but I thought they were psychedelic band with her. They were much more than that. Dock of the Bay, Otis Redding. It was a compilation, but it came out then. A band that's near and dear to me, Fairport Convention. Their debut came out in that year. Lou? Horizontal, the Bee Gees. Ah. They did Massachusetts. Ah, yeah, yeah. He sings Massachusetts, he goes Massachusetts. He doesn't pronounce the T in it. Oh, he's British. Yeah. Australian. Australian. Australian, that's right. Also asked to try me. Fleetwood Macs, debut album Fleetwood Mac. Fucking horrible. Fucking horrible. You know, like 12 Bar Blues? Yes. Horrible. It was no rumors, was it? No. I've never heard this album, but I just love the title. I Can't Stand Myself When You Touch Me by James Brown. I love that title. Can't stand when you check my prostate. Here we go again. Here we go. Child is Father to the Man, the first Blood and Sweat Tears album with Al Cooper, not David Quain's sons. Do you know what the hit song was from it? It had a hit. Yes. I Can't Quit Her. Yes. Let's see. Diana Ross and the Supremes came out with Reflections. Reflections of the way life used to be. Yeah, yeah. Mark. Sorcerer Falls Secrets, the second album by Pink Floyd. Damn, yeah. Yeah. Okay. Lou. Gris Gris, Dr. John. Ah. New Orleans. The Monkees. The Birds, the Bees, and the Monkees. It was probably a number one album too, wasn't it? Yeah, right, right. They sold the records, those guys. Mark. Waiting for the Sun by The Doors. Ah, there you go. Lou. Let's see. The Inner Mystique by the Chocolate Watchband with their cover of The Kings. I like psychedelic garage sixes. You are digging deep. This is great. Well, they did a cover. You probably heard of The Kings song. I'm not like everybody else. I don't think anyone's heard of it. No, no. Yes, they have, they have. And I'm gonna tell you a little trivia fact. They have it, Lou. My first time getting played on the radio in New Jersey at a college station. That song was on the set list of one of my songs. That's how I know. Oh, wow. Yeah. Okay. Dance to the music. Ah, dance to the music. Sly and the Family Stone. Yep. Mark. Astral Weeks from Van Morrison. Ah, okay. Great album. Yeah. All right. Lou. In a Gato Da Vida, Iron Butterfly. Or when I was a kid and I had a speech problem I used to go in a Vada Godi Debba. Ever seen the movie Manhunter? That's plays an important part. Yes, yes. The Beat of the Brass. Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass. Yeah. CCR's debut came out that year. Ah, okay. What a revival. Lou? Simon Suss, the 1910 Fruit Comb Company. The 1910 Fruit Comb Company. That's right. I thought of you when I saw that. I was researching it. Lou's gonna say that one. The Mama's in the Papa's debut album came out in 68. Wow. Yeah. All right, let's do three more then we gotta get into movies. Okay. I'm afraid Lou won't mention it so I gotta mention it. Music from the Big Pink by the band. Ah, okay. I was holding off, Lou. I was waiting for you to say it. I didn't even think of it. But I can't wait for the remixes. I cannot wait for the remixes. Lou? We're all in it for the money. The Mothers of Invention. Good album. Ah, okay. Marvin Gaye, I heard it through the grapevine. California Grapes. Nefertiti by Miles Davis with Cicely Tyson on the cover. His wife at the time. Lou? Friends, the Beach Boys. It's a great album. Ah, okay. It's a great pop album. It's got Darlin' on it. Okay. Yeah, but it was not surf music. Procol harem, Shine On Brightly. You know? Keeping it British. Not one of the bigger albums, but. Keeping it British. Odyssey and the Oracle by the Zombies. Ah. Lou? Once Upon a Dream, The Rascals. And let me see. Let me finish it off with Traffic. Traffic's debut album. Oh yeah, yeah. There's so much we could do a whole five hour just on the albums of 1968. I had 15 more, yeah. And some of us want to see the albums. But we gotta move on. We gotta move on. We're getting into this. Let's take a little break from the music as we usually do. Let's get into some movies of 1968. There were some good ones. Yeah, all right. Let me, let's see. Steve McQueen. Lou, you start this time. Okay, I think it's probably the greatest movie of all time. It is the original Planet of the Apes. Yes. Oh yeah, yeah. One of the greatest sci-fi movies of all time. Absolutely. Yeah, yeah. We were talking about the sequels earlier. Yep, yep. Good comedy. The Producers came out. Yeah, man. Don't be stupid. Beershamabi. One of two big Steve McQueen movies that year, Bullet, came out. Yeah, yeah. Great fucking movie. Widely considered the greatest car chase in the history of music, in the history of movies. I was surprised to see it came out that long ago. I thought it was in the 70s. The dude that played Steve McQueen in Once Upon a Time in America looked just like him. He did. How was that guy? I don't know. He looked just like him, though. It was fucking eerie, man. I started watching that. Lou, it was Perry. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, wasn't it? Once Upon a Time in America, didn't I? Yeah, yeah, that's the De Niro movie. Another great movie. Lou, give me a movie. Neil Simon's The Odd Couple. Yeah, yeah. So Planet of the Apes came out on April 3rd, 1968. This movie came out the same day. 2001, A Space Odyssey. The same day? Wow. Same day, yep. Wow. I've never seen that all the way through. I have, many nots. Lou, why haven't you seen it, Lou? Because it's slow-paced and boring, Dr. Bowman. Lou, go into that room, Lou. It's so slow, it's so slow-paced. Who started it? Yours, Mark? Good morning. I'm gonna go with Night of the Living Dead. Yeah, there you go. I still think that's one of the scariest movies of all time, still. Yeah. Absolutely. I saw that when I was too young to see that movie. You were damaged goods, dude. I am totally damaged. I didn't sleep until I was 15. And then you had Chinese food, oh. And you ruined your walk, man, I'm sorry. Lou? The Boston Strangler. Ah, Tony Curtis. Tony Curtis. I've never seen that. It's good. You can't even see it. The super sent me. The super sent me. Yeah. That's what he used to say, it's how he'd get into the economy, the super sent me. Oh, man. Right? And they didn't show too much. Well, it was the 60s. He murdered, allegedly murdered 13 people. They didn't really start showing real blood and go into the 70s. But there were some movies in the 60s that showed a lot that that brought about the rating system. There are some movies from like 67, 68 that are pretty wild. Well, Quentin Tarantino had a great theory on movies. He said, if you see the movies in the talkies, right, well, the silent films, they're all nice. And then all of a sudden you get into like the gangster movies and it starts getting violent. Then it starts getting a little, they get some crazy ass movies, right? And then the 50s, it all goes back to the beginning. Everything's wholesome. Everything's all American. Just like rock and roll in the 50s got wholesome. Yeah. And then you get into the 60s and there's kind of a, you see something opening up there, right? There's a little, the directors and the production companies get a little more. And then the 70s was just fucking chaos at movies, right? And then you get your grind house at its best, right? And then you get into the 80s and everything went wholesome again, pretty in pink and pretty much war movies and stuff. But there was kind of, and then the 90s started getting a little crazy. It's, he said, there's always a cycle, a 30-year cycle. It seems politically conservative. In the 50s, Eisenhower was the president throughout the 50s, more conservative on the surface dynamic. But in the 50s, there were some pretty, there's a lot of underground movies like the man with the golden arm. There's always going to be that. Of course. You're always going to have these renegade directors. But they were considered renegade, actually, absolutely. So I've been saying this for a couple of years. So since like 2018, 2017, maybe it started 2016, you started to see this whole little thing in movies about canceled people and cancel that movie. Oh, they can't make a movie about this. Characters have to be diverse and we can't insult these people. So you start seeing that, right? And now I had been saying this. There's a generation of kids growing up that are going to be the fucking craziest directors that Hollywood's ever seen. They're just going to go total, because now you've got the Academy Awards. You can't win an Academy Award unless you have, you meet all the check marks. And I'm not being political. I'm just, this is the way it is now. They all have check marks. That's happened in the 50s and then the directors went, yeah, exactly. But the Academy Awards committed to this. So it's never going to change. They'll never go back on that because it has to check off disabled, it has to check off this, it has to check off that. Everything is cyclical. Like when you go nuts about the movies now, it's all going to change. It's just going to go the other way. Yeah, these movies will be buried, but it's still the fact that they- I got in the 80s when they got really strict about things. I was like, oh, and I remember someone telling me, it's like, it's all going to go back, just give it time. Music too, you know, music. Oh, I hate music. Well, it'll go back, you know. June 12th, 1968, Rosemary's Baby came in. Oh yeah.

Yeah, and I've told us a lot of people, you know, they take the time and look at it. What do you came up with his left hand underneath his kin. And never landed anything. He pushed him. He didn't hit him. He just pushed him. And if you look at that, that's the way it was, but it was too late. Yeah, and that's not the way the official Sauder people. And then that was his last left coaching. Yeah. Did you know I did You feel like that was the end of Woody that evening? Yes, I did. Honestly, I did. I said. In fact, I turned on my wife and I said Emily I said he's gone. He's gone of guarantee it. They've been awaiting toe choir him for Humpty, how many days and how many months and how many years they finally got their opportunity in the team on the plane said that what he came over the intercom And said he's no longer the head coach of the Ohio State Buckeyes and the players were just Absolutely stunned, and they and Donnelly said it took him a half hour to get off the plane. You know that everybody sat there silent. Right, right. It was a sad day. I mean, you know, it's so emotional for anybody that really like 40, and I sure did like him. Absolutely. Yes. And, uh It was fun several years ago when I covered the Bangles, and you came to Georgetown College for training camp, instead of sitting around the dinner table with assistant coach Mark Duffner of the Bangles. I greatly greatly admire what a what a great great guy and he said that you had the most popular name at Ohio State because the freshman after a couple days would say I want my mommy. John. Mama, I want my money. Oh, great. That was just phenomenal. Yeah, my dad. Something else. Wow. Yeah. Could you tell the Can you tell the hot chocolate story with the great Pete Johnson? In a CliffsNotes version. Uh, you know what? You know, I vaguely remember that. Oh, yeah. Okay. Okay. I do. I think you had to try to keep all the you know. What do you want the team to have hot chocolate. What the night before the game and trying to keep what 50 to 70 Hot chocolate's hot You know was was difficult. And P. Johnson, one of his hot chocolate I tried to remember I tried to remember that story. But I wanted to forget the thrill. Absolutely trying, because boy, he got so mad at me. I'll tell you what he says, Mommy, you cussed me out a little bit and said I said Hot chocolate. That is the horse, Pete. You know, he really, really helped me out when he tested Coach. This is cool. Yeah, No. Would he jumped all over me? No doubt. Wow. You make sure you make sure you get that caught right now. Send it down. Sent it back, man. Unbelievable. You know yet temper tantrums, and I was the track and cross country manager right down the hall. From what? He's office. It's John Arena. And so I heard some outbursts. But, you know, tear in his hat. You know, kick and guys in the butt. Grab him by the face mask. Wow. Do you have a favorite woody story? Whether it was a motivational speech or Personal One of them one of the funniest Tory's Esko serpent and was really trying to coach with because he had a great sense of humor. But he didn't show that when he was around, Woody, and he would tell me, John, Don't be careful here. Now we're the word, dangerous territory and what he had fallen down. He'd thrown his watch in a practice that was Yeah, in this call late fall, and it was black outside. You couldn't see a thing, but he threw that watch down, and he sort of went for it, and he slipped and he fell on the church and in those days Woody. One of the field wet getting ready for the you know the Rainstorms and snow. Everything we had coming up. But anyway what? He tried to get up and start grab me. Don't don't help me. Don't help him. Just let him go. So we let him go. And all of a sudden he started Hydra planing because he was trying to get up and he kept waving his arms. And all of a sudden water was coming up to his belly. And, you know, splashing. It was so funny. I mean, you couldn't believe it. And finally he tried to get up and he couldn't quite make it in one of the Managers went over there to try to help him. He cuts him out. He said. Get out here. I can get up and that gave him the energy toe. Pop up family. Oh, wow. Which starts is a John. Welcome to the Big 10. Yes, you know, looking back, Coach John. Mommy's with us from Fairport Harbor, Ohio, talked in the northeast corner of the state. And you know when you're looking back, you know, Woody, and you know the three yards and a cloud of dust philosophy that he had Then it was just so painful right around that time when Arch least er came, you know, just making the change to, um or wide open offense and to think it where things are today. It's just unbelievable. Yes, it is. That was unbelievable Time and I remember him, Boy. He was a good good quarterback. But George's chop was his coach and He did a real nice job. I think that first game he had a little trouble. We had a couple of intercepted. That was it. I thought, but he ended up playing a lot so and he was a great athlete. Gambling debt to him, no doubt who bad, no doubt. And but it was just Woody being very hardheaded with his offensive philosophy, man, three yards and a cloud of dust. That's the way it was. Yep. Yep, the old school But I'll tell you what Chicky was one of the neatest guys you'd ever wanna meet. When you're in trouble or needed something, and it was necessary. What he'd always come to your aid. He was. He was a great coach. Great person that he doesn't seem like it, Cheryl incidences. Now, as far as what do the Buckeyes have to do to end this curse tomorrow night in the Sugar Bowl against the Clemson Tigers? Well, they better play perfect balls. Because Clemson is much like Alabama. They've got a lot of talent. And we are. I think a little bit behind him this year as far as what we've had in the past, so we got to play a perfect game. That's that's the only thing I could say. And John. We know that Ohio State is Fired up for this game. I mean, just all the reminders of last year's Game. You know they're out there. And so we know that the Buckeyes are going to be mentally ready. Can they channel that emotion? Onto performance on the field. That's what's so huge and finishing in the red Zone because field goals ain't gonna cut it. Touchdowns will Yes. You hit it right on the head chick. You know, Like I said, they're gonna have to play a perfect game and guys, we're gonna have to step up. It haven't stepped up all year. Maybe they haven't stepped up until now. But let's hope they do because I think we have a chance, but it's gonna be tough. And to think back, you know, in your day and how things you know have changed. The Ohio State brand, John You know to be able to get, say the top ranked quarterback in the nation out of universe out of Texas to come to Ohio State here. And I mean, it's just huge the talent that they're accumulating. Information. I hope the guys stay. That's the biggest thing. You know. "I'm all excited about our next guest. He played and coached at Ohio State under legendary Woody Hayes, and he was the quarterback of the 1961 national champion Ohio State Buckeyes. Let's go upto Fairport Harbor and we welcome in the pride of Paynesville. Harvey High School from the Ohio State University. Buckeyes. The great coach John Mommy. John, How are you? Happy New year. I'm great chick. How are you all fantastic. I hope you and Emily Goshen said 58 years now at least wow. Fantastic man. I hope I hope you and Emily are doing well. We are. We are. Thanks for asking chick. You are welcome. Now, 1961. I know your worst memory of that season when the faculty council didn't allow the national championship Buckeyes to go to the Rose Bowl, But how about your best memory from that season? Well from that season didn't have many others and beat Michigan. 50 to 20. Awesome, Yes. We never lost to Michigan on our team. Never lost is sort of like it is now. Well, I give anything for a for a for gold pants. I would love that trinket. The most of it. Most of those today would come from my gold teeth. Yeah. Oh, wow. How did that team react? It had to be a shock when the faculty council Said. Hey, football's getting too important here and heck, we gotta have education to man and not allowing the Buckeyes to play in the Rose Bowl, and that honor went to Minnesota that had to be shocking. Well, it was, but Minnesota did the job. Remember with the quarterback? They had handy. Sandy Stevens. Wow, That's what we named him because he would flip the ball out. One handed and that was it. No. No. In Ohio State. You had to come down the line with two hands, shaking the ball. If you're going to run an option, and you had to take him out that way, But if you ever did it With one hand you have a foot. Somewhere where it didn't Wouldn't she shouldn't be. You know, I'd like to say you were the quarterback in 1961. But you shared that job, didn't you? We know would three quarterbacks. We have three. We know what he's aversion to the forward pass. Oh, yeah. Yes. Should do. I should do He, uh, I could remember some of the practices we'd have, and I was really pretty darn good at throwing the long ball. I mean, I could hit the long ball by the 55 60 yards and I'd hear that. You know, I get over exuberant, Woody. That's it. I worked on this all year and I'm gonna be your starting quarterback. You don't get don't get happy, exigent sperm is gonna be our quarterback. He's the best passer. I said, We'll see. Yeah. Wow. Yeah. Joe Skillets. Burma was he was a good one, and he played baseball for Detroit Tigers, and it was a picture absolutely masculine, ill. He was really good. Then Bill Murkowski, great leader, 65. And just heading steady quarterback Really, really good. He doubled it defensive back when he wasn't playing quarterback or in the defense of back building in the Land defense mostly, No. You went on to coach for Woody and they still had a freshman team, didn't they? And they would start it out as a freshman team. Uh, And then it turned into the You know they did. They cut out freshman teams after a couple of years, and then it was JVs. And then we played like Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan State OU teams like that, and we only played three or four games a year. Baghdad. It graduated, went up. And finally, the last couple years I was there I was graduated into the varsity and I ended up coaching the wide receivers tight end. And Wingbacks so That was kind of fun. Yes, even though what he had had aversion to the forward pass, But you really help get this team involved and get him ready in 1968 with super soft and Rex Kern and they were good, awesome. The woman off. Geez. Yeah, they were fabulous. Yeah. Rex Kern, Man. What a what a talent. They were all talented. Excuse me. Yeah. Can we go back? Coach Mommy to December 29 1978 the Gator Bowl. You write. You were no longer coaching in Ohio State. Then we watched the game. You know, we saw the punch. Of nose tackle Charlie Bowman delivered by the legendary Woody Hayes. Wow. And I just listened to Tim Mace Podcast with Doug Donley. And Don Lee talked about Woody in the aftermath, you know, in the locker room, gathering the team around Do you know why do you know why I did it? He said he had it coming. He had it coming to him. He said his great grandfather killed my great grandfather in the civil war. Wow. Just blew my mind. I heard. Yeah. It was like a, uh, South Bs. The North Woody. Yeah. What? Everything was a war with Woody, wasn't it? Itwas itwas remember who we were playing. Yeah. You remember the team? Oh, well, Clemson Yeah. Yeah, we haven't beaten clams. And yet that's right. Row for four. The only team we haven't beaten right, man. It's almost like a curse. It started that night. And what was your reaction? Gosh, when you saw Woody's temper tantrum Well, I've seen many before..
