New Yorkers Are Fleeing to the Suburbs: ‘The Demand Is Insane’

"In the suburbs is surging. As New Yorkers are fleeing the city Greg David from the news outlet. The city has been following this and joins us now, Greg, what are you seeing in terms of home sales and prices in the suburbs? Well, home sales air certainly up a lot and some prices air up to, according Tio Miller, Samuel Real estate appraisers the suburbs as a whole had a 44% increase in do I and sales compared with a year ago increase in Westchester, 112%. Fairfield County, 73%. And the brokers all say these are New Yorkers seeking to leave the city for more space. Because they fear another pandemic and possibly even because of the shootings and rise in the crime rate. What does this mean for the city's recovery? I guess it would take a bite out of the tax revenues right? It's going to take a bite out of the tax revenues, and it conceivably is going to take a bite out of the city's business community. The more people moved to the suburbs, The more companies are under pressure to let workers work remotely. It's going to be difficult for the recovery. Another big hurdle. You know, there's different groups of people who are buying homes in the suburbs are people. Usually middle class and upper middle class people who were leaving. We also know that many young people have left to go home. We know people with second homes have gone to live in the second homes. Maybe they'll come back. Maybe they won't come back. But it is. It's a really big hurdle. And yes, you're absolutely right. These people pay more taxes than many other people. There have been crises here before people have left than they always seem to come back. What is your sense This time around? Is this short term long term permanent? Perhaps. No one knows the answer to that. But I would say that someone who has covered this story about New York's ups and downs for more than 35 years. I am very worried this time. I think the pandemic And the economic damage from the pandemic could be doing more than temporary harm. I think it's clearly worse than both the aftermath of the terrorist attacks in the aftermath of the financial crisis. How much worse how permanent those air questions I can't answer today. Greg David at the city, Greg. Thank you. Thank you. W CBS

"Is you know flat and going down in fact the Fairfield county's down about thirteen percent since it set peak so that's extraordinary good news in terms of what that means to our future another way that we look at it is you know is hospitalizations statewide here you can see what the three day moving averages you can see that trend line is trending down this year maybe maybe remember from the White House task force they have set a fourteen days of consistent downward trend you're moving in this what they call tier one and tier one is pretty much where we are right now because we never close down our parks and beaches gives the hospitals maybe a second look at thinking about elective surgery so this is where we could be in another week assuming this trend line continues which is so so positive we had an interesting conversation with the task force up most of our fellow governors like ourselves are ramping up but the testing you know we've done well just because of our relationships as you know with the CVS and some of the other partners out there quest of course thermo Fisher one of the things that you know I put it out is rather than over relying upon the drive through tests we're making a big point of making sure those tests also get out into the community especially the urban communities where people a little less likely to be tested you heard that with a quest the other day and you could hear a little more about are a mobile van as we get more people tested especially in underserved communities where people may be more likely to be infected and have a serious consequences all the governors had the we talked about the flare ups it's not a consistent straight line and obviously if you look around the country you see the New York metropolitan area going down we're part of that you certainly see Louisiana you see Detroit these are all good trend lines but as I've said before Boston is flaring up Philadelphia's flaring up so there following this almost on a heat map that we get to see is you trying track what those are trends are out there all of our states have flare ups in those more congested places started with nursing homes in correctional facilities we've been pushing pretty hard on FEMA and the feds to help us out there I just like the all the nursing homes of pushing us pretty hard to be helpful FEMA is stepping up better late than never they're going to have a big delivery to every single nursing home in the country and all of our nursing homes of more protective gear and starting with the masks and gowns and that start shipping out to may first ought to be completed about ten days thereafter and that's on top of the incredible increase in a PP that we've got the we've been getting distributed to all of our nursing homes as well that's on top of the fact that we're going out doing physical inspections of these nursing homes and Josh tells me about two thirds of those homes have been inspected and adapt to be corrections in terms of infectious or cleaning we're ready to do that and have instructed them as such I was a little surprised but not shocked to hear about another disruption.

And then he went on a long description of how important is to have border security, and I came back at him and asked him, but they are now being forced to work without pay or being furloughed. And he said as he has said before that he's convinced that they are actually with him, but it's striking. There was very little expression of empathy for what they are going through. I I think about that as well. Just because so many people live paycheck to paycheck, and it's not just, you know, you know, lower middle class middle class, whatever I mean, there's people in every echelon, let's say, well, I know pay days coming so I don't have to worry about it. Twitter loses one-fifth of its market value on weak user numbers

"You're, never more than fifteen, minutes from the big stories on WCBS good afternoon I'm Joe Avalon And, here's three, things to know at four fifteen number one Manhattan judge has given former. Assembly speaker, Sheldon silver a seven year prison, sentence. Silver was convicted in may on. Corruption charges number two New. York will revoke spectrum cables right to provide service in New York state regulators are accusing spectrums. Parent charter of not living up to terms established in the Time Warner. Merger and number three a second firefighters died battling the wildfire in. California's swept through. Several towns they're. Destroying dozens of home a day after Facebook stock got pummeled, it's, Twitter turns it's Twitter's turn, I should, say as I'm, turning to the monitor to see okay Twitter closed down, twenty point five percent c net reporter Ian. Share spoke with Mike Wallace? This afternoon about it and Twitter's quarterly earnings are, better than expected so what's the problem today the problem is. The same problem that's facing Facebook which is that user growth has stalled. Or stopped. Or gone even Backward in some cases and it's. Really concerning for Wall Street investors have been used to now for the. Last couple of years despite this just unending list of scandals whether. It's Russian meddling. Or Trump's tweeting. In general or even stuff like the concerns about data privacy, with, Cambridge Analytica every one of, these things, seems to have, not held back the financial performance of both Facebook and, Twitter Twitter actually was able to get profitable. In the last couple of? Years and Facebook was growing quite crazy until this, week and so now we're seeing this kind of sudden yeah, yeah Stop of everything that was looking good financially and investors are, panicked and we're seeing stock went down for Facebook it had the, largest market share market value loss in the history of, the United States yesterday and then Twitter is, down some twenty percent last time I checked and, this thing just continues to. Be very bad news now recently Twitter has been purging fake accounts to. The tune of about a, million a day is is that a big factor in this in. This lack of user growth believe it or not know that data was actually. From a locked account so there's a distinction that may not seem. Like it matters but when Twitter's going, through in identifying accounts that do bad stuff whether, they are so they're spammy or whatever or harassing they will do. What's calling lock the account which means that it's still exists on their service but you can't access it. So those accounts were automatically not included in the counts that they use. So removing all those accounts which is what they've. Been doing in the last couple of weeks and, we, saw President Trump's never Twitter followers jaw dropping some six hundred thousand, we saw Justin Bieber lose over a million. All of that was actually stuff that's not part of the normal count so that's what makes. This even more worrisome that is on top. Of them actually policing. Their platform appropriately or at least more than they were. These, numbers, are still not growing and that's a problem interesting stuff CNN reporter insure always great to, talk to you have a good weekend my pleasure take care w CBS, news time four eighteen time for traffic and weather together where we go. Every ten minutes on the eighth here's MAC McClure Joe were, watching a lot of problems out there right now this update sponsored, by indeed there's a crash now on the New Jersey, turnpike a western spur southbound approaching fifteen w, blocks the left hand lane there also in New, Jersey southbound on route seventeen. Just past the Garden State Parkway and parameter disabled vehicle blocks the right. Hand lane and then on, northbound route twenty three approaching Paterson Hamburg turnpike emergency construction that blocks. The left hand That is going to, be wrapping up here pretty soon within the next ten twelve minutes or so elsewhere we have the northbound sprain brook Parkway with. Still this crashed at blocks left hand lane. It's just past took a whole road southbound on the Bronx river Parkway. Near main street of White Plains there's still a down tree they're working on getting out of the way I blocked at least one lane there. In the Connecticut turnpike on the, northbound side but you. Really heavy. Pockets of, delays, as you go on through Greenwich. And really all the. Way up. To Norwalk are you hiring with indeed you can post a job in minutes set up screener questions then zero in on qualified. Candidates in, an, online dashboard get started at indeed dot com slash higher next. Traffic update less than ten, minutes away and meteorologist Craig Allen I'm watching the, weather radar it's really interesting what's happening right now it is lighting up in areas and you could see how it's. Splits and then the showers and thunderstorms develop and this is what was happening with. Just one lone cell last night but you're actually getting to, see various thunderstorms going through their lifestyle Michael they grow they last about thirty forty five minutes they move along they weaken new one pops up. Just a little bit down the road and right. Now we have one of those lines. That runs from Fairfield county right on up to Hartford a brand new, one look how fast this one. Develops I can tell you. It's a runs from just about the western. The west shore of Staten Island right on down through the Garden State Parkway crosses. The Garden State Parkway and then it goes down towards Trenton there are others in northwestern as well as Poconos Catskills. It's line after line so the severe thunderstorm watches in effect until ten showers and thunderstorms, some heavy the first part of the night sixty seven, to seventy two tomorrow partly sunny. Very warm a little less humid though with just a spotty thunderstorm. High in. The mid to upper eighties. Clear Saturday night Sunday a mix of. Sun and clouds warm not too humid Sunday looks really good for a, summer day high near eighty five but. Then for Monday and Tuesday the humidity's coming back and so will the, transfer shower increases Monday night and on into Tuesday a shower or Onto storm right now seventy six after that shower so it dropped several degrees, humidity jumped to ninety, one percent right now in the city, once again it's. Seventy six we're going down to about seventy w CBS news time. Four twenty Mike Mike sugarman went, surfing in New York City it's part of his sweet spot he did it in queens who,.
