"Please donate to Vehicles for Change at VehiclesForChange .org. Your car will be transformational for a local family. 638. Traffic and weather on the 8th and we'll start on the traffic center with Dave Dildine. On Interstate westbound, 66 still slow from the beltway, a better clip beyond Nutley Street. The crash is entirely on the right shoulder leading up to Route 123. Route 28 southbound, still riding the brakes from Nutley to Centerville. The crash after Westfields Boulevard, closer to I -66. Car into the back of a bucket truck. The right side was blocked off by the response on 28 south. I -95 southbound, still slow from Lorton to Broadbridge. Did have at least one incident on the right shoulder before exit 161. It's either that or something new that's keeping us slow in southern Fairfax County. Fair Lakes Parkway, westbound west of Fairfax County Parkway had a crash clearing off the right side. The Harpers Ferry 340 detour continues. Route 29 at Harpers Ferry Road on that detour, still slow but starting to calm down. It's taking a while to clear out the rush traffic hour on the Beltway and still packed on the outer loop near 66 and from Telegraph to the Wilson Bridge but slower on the inner loop from Route 7 Tysons across the Legion Bridge to River Road. Any crashes in that backup are going to be fender benders and minor and mostly off in the long term work zone. In Maryland on the Beltway, some slowing on the inner loop near the Mormon Temple. Prince George's County side of the Beltway clearing out though. 270 northbound just a pocket of congestion in Gaithersburg. Few slowdowns here and there on the BW Parkway near Laurel. 95 works better. Route 50 good from the Beltway to the Bay Bridge. District 395 still crowded through southwest. We had a crash on the Whitehurst Freeway westbound before the Key Bridge and M Street. The traffic is able to get by at least single file. If you ride Metro's redline a lot you'll have to make some changes to your commute over the early winter starting December 18th three major stations right in the heart of DC will shut down along the red line for two weeks because of repairs. Farragut North, Metro Center and Gallery Place will be closed between December 18th and the 30th. Redline riders will be able to take free shuttle buses between the closed stations. Now blue, orange, green, yellow and silver line trains running through those stations will not affected. be On top of that Judiciary Square station will be closed from December 22nd through December 24th. Meantime Metro is working to make it easier it says for passengers to get around its stations, its platforms and on the trains. Here on Metro most of us have had that moment of doubt. Did I just get on the wrong train or how do I get out of this station? Metro's testing some new signs to give you a better sense of where you are and where you're headed in a system where all the stations look the same when you're around. Instead of listing final stations, the signs will say the direction the trains going north, south, east or west. And once you get there exit signs will be labeled A through D. That'll correspond with the pylons up on the street level to make it easier to plan ahead. In L 'Enfant Plaza, Neil Oikenstein, WTLP 607 with a strong job market and new developments popping up each day, the DC region's economy is doing a lot better since the pandemic ended. Now, despite all that though, a new report finds one thing isn't improving. How many people go to bed hungry? Food insecurity in our region remains eagerly high. Radha Mathaya heads a capital area food bank, which in its 2023 hunger report found that 32 % people of in the DC region don't know where the next meal will come from. With really higher percentages of the pandemic and black populations screening as food insecure. The results are similar to last year's report. This families year say the inability to recover financially after the pandemic, inflation and the ending of pandemic era government food help is to blame. Mathaya says lawmakers can step in here. We know when there's greater cash in the pockets of many of our region's families that tends to go towards their children and tends to market to go go towards food. "Lodge, Maryland. Everything you need every time and you listen. WTOP news. It's 515. Good morning. I'm Kyle Cooper with some of the worst crime rates in decades. The DC Council recently passed an emergency crime bill. After months of disagreement, Councilmember Brooke Pinto, chair of the Judiciary and Public Safety Committee, wrote the bill that's now in effect. She joined WTOP is Luke Garrett on the DMV Download podcast to talk about the state of crime in DC and why she wants city officials to work together to fight violence. When I think about what's happening in our community right now with public safety, safety, it is unacceptable. We have really high rates of crimes of violence going on, we have over 127 people this year alone who have already been killed and we are on track if we don't intervene now to have our third year in a row where over 100 residents DC were killed. And that would be the first time in two decades that we got to that terrible and so it's really important that Believer that reducing crime and violence and improving public safety takes all of us. It takes our government partners. it also takes our schools, it takes our religious leaders, it takes our parents and families to be be part of that partnership to really drive it down and build the type of community that all of us want to and deserve to to live like safety on the council, it is very important to me that I lead the committee in a way that can bring folks along with us to making changes now that will improve public safety in our city because it it cannot wait. There's long been a blame game going on between DC Mayor Muriel Bowser and DC Council chair Phil Mendelsohn. It's been a bumpy road coming up to this point for the last six months. You know, all 23. There's been a lot of tumult. There's been a lot of derision, you know in the Wilson building over how to deal with crime and residents are starting to really voice this concern loudly. Do you expect this bumpiness to continue or do you think that the mayor's office and the DC Council are in stride now and district residents can be hopeful that you all will deal with crime together? Look, I think healthy debate is healthy. I certainly don't own all answers or solutions. I continue to from learn my colleagues in the council, from the mayor, from what I'm seeing leaders in other states do. So I think a little bit of bumpiness is good to make sure that changes sometimes do need to be slow and deliberate because we have a responsibility to keep the entire public safe and pursue justice. SDC Councilmember Brooke Pinto, hear the full conversation on this new episode of the DMV Download podcast anywhere you get your podcasts. A quick look. A quick look at the top stories we're working on on WTOP fired up and it's been a long time coming. The commander sales official will hear from fans and the new owner. "Also a good reminder about the importance of disability rights. The Federal Trade Commission wants people to know about Medicaid renewal scams. During the pandemic, most states expanded Medicaid coverage to make sure people, including those with disabilities, were enrolled. Ira Rheingold with the National Association of Consumer Advocates says, when the program phased out, scammers stepped in. So when we think about scams, we always have to think about how desperate people are, how scared people are. So health insurance is obviously really important. If you're disabled, health insurance is even more important for you because your medical needs may be greater because of your condition. To avoid scammers, Rheingold recommends never sharing your credit card or bank account information. If you're disabled and need medical assistance, check with your local social services agency. Sandra Jones, WTOP News. A 10 -mile extension of Virginia's 95 express lanes in Fredericksburg is on track to open sometime next month. Turning the page to other stories we're following for you Saturday morning here on WTOP. There is now officially a date on the calendar for former President Donald J. Trump's classified records criminal case. The May 2024 date now is a compromise apparently. Mr. Trump's lawyers had wanted you may remember the trial put off until after the 2024 election. Federal prosecutors wanted it to actually start two weeks before Christmas this year. The former president is the target of multiple investigations as you know and some of his trial dates could actually end up overlapping. Let's start with the Manhattan one that's actually set for spring 2024 before the Florida one if they stick with that timetable. Of course there's this potential charge here in Washington DC looming for the January 6th prosecution and the investigation efforts into to overturn the 2020 election. That case could be broader and wider in scope than the Florida one so it's unclear if that would get to trial first if charged or if Washington DC federal court would move more swiftly. This all is on the same pair of train tracks three different potential trains all having to make the same stop at the same time. Meantime this morning word of a settlement and a case between the former president's longtime lawyer Michael Cohen and the Trump organization. Cohen claims he was unfairly stuck paying big legal bills after getting entangled in investigations into former President Donald Trump. The lawsuit was scheduled to go to court next week. The former president's son Donald Trump Jr. was scheduled to testify. Details of the settlement were not revealed. Cohen claimed the Trump organization promised to pay the bills and did so for a time but reneged after he started cooperating with federal prosecutors in their investigations related to Donald Trump's business dealings in Russia and attempts to silence women with allegations about Trump's personal life. The Trump organization had disputed it made certain promises to Cohen and has said it satisfied any obligations it did have. I'm Ed Saturday morning. A Florida man pleads guilty to participating in the January 6th Capitol riots. 47 -year -old Anthony Sargent pleading guilty this week in D .C. federal court doing so Friday to a felony count of civil disorder and misdemeanor six charges. According to a criminal complaint in the case several videos apparently show Sargent attempting to enter the North entrance that day on the Capitol. Prosecutors say later that day Sargent also prevented an officer from actually taking another rioter into custody. His sentencing is set for the of end September. He faces up to five years behind bars. Let's talk tech stuff on WTLP Saturday morning executives from Amazon, Google, Microsoft, meta and the maker of chat GPT opened AI all agreeing to artificial intelligence safeguards. The Biden administration worked this up says the voluntary agreements on the table by the tech firms are meant to ensure their AI products are safe before actually releasing them to the public. Ashley Gold, tech policy reporter for Axios joining WTLP with what we can expect from this. What is laid out in these commitments are things that the larger companies, especially Google and Microsoft, they were already doing just because they've been working on AI for so long in so many different ways, long before the generative AI craze that sort of kicked off this spring. They have teams in place that do this kind of work already. It's not going to be super difficult for them. It's little a more notable for the smaller AI companies that maybe this is new protocol for them. But yeah, you're right. There's no teeth in this announcement. WTLP at seven. Among the other stories we're following for you this morning on WTLP as we head into this weekend morning CBS News Brief, after weeks above 100, even above We just learned to live with the heat. Three right lanes between Nutley Street and Cedar Lane are blocked. Then westbound 66 just outside the butway. Left lane is closed. And then two left lanes are blocked, the central lane and right lane that is, just to the west of Nutley Street, all That's because of the road work. Be aware that you're going to find on southbound Nutley Street approaching 66. All lanes are shut down. And then you're going to find on the ramp from northbound Nutley Street to 66. For the road work, but the road work on Gallows Road approaching 66 has been cleared. "Years. It'll another be couple months before you can do it. We'll explain why. Keep it here on Ed. Traffic and weather on the 8th. Here's Rob in the WTOP traffic center. Thanks, Dan. We're gonna start in Maryland. Listener checks in eastbound on 198 after I 5 the right lane is blocked for the crash and response on scene is staying single file left in order to get by there. Eastbound 198 after I 95 right lane blocked for the crash. No problems otherwise on I 95 itself from beltway to beltway. The BW Parkway in pretty good shape right now, but southbound seeing some volume delays passing 32 headed down toward 198. No problems on Route 50. If you're headed toward the Bay Bridge, they are they running two way operations giving you two lanes east, excuse me, three lanes east and two lanes in the westbound direction. Southbound 270 after Chady Grove Road. We had debris along the left side reported to be some boxes. We believe that's actually clear out of loop in Virginia into three lanes as you head toward the Wilson Bridge. A single right lane on the Wilson Bridge gets you by the work zone there. Otherwise no other problems on the Beltway in Virginia. 66 remains clear. I -95 Southbound off and on the brakes mainly between Quantico and of course Stafford County as head you down toward the merge from the Express into the main lanes. Northbound I -95 still pockets the volume between Parkway the Centerport and the Springfield Interchange which travel lanes are open there. Eastbound on, excuse me, westbound Fair Lakes Parkway underneath of the Fairfax County Parkway. That's where the crash is. You're in the police direction for that one. "Morning at four 18 traffic and whether all the 8s and when it breaks, Carlos Ramirez is with us this morning and then I will be TLP traffic center. Indeed, I am. Thank you so much, dean, who just got off the phone with a listener who's letting us know that there is an accident scene in bombing a vehicle that did flip over. This is on 29. Looks like just as you make away past litton hall road. According to the listener, they've got a lane blocked in either direction there should be blocking that left lane both ways, so do proceed with caution if you're making your way through Gainesville again. That's 29 right by litton hall road. 66 looks good so far, a little slow after the fairfax county Parkway. But no reports of any actual accident scenes. I'll tell you where there is one here in fairfax. Monument drive, right at the intersection for the fair lakes Parkway, a handful of emergency vehicles making their way now. In D.C., the eastbound side of New York avenue that's headed outbound towards bladensburg road towards two 95. All lanes are shut down right at Montana avenue, we've been watching the camera and what they're doing is they're letting you get up towards Montana avenue, but then you're forced to either make that left turn or you're allowed to go ahead and make that U turn to find an alternate route. Also if you're headed northbound on Montana avenue, you will not be able to make that right turn onto New York avenue, keep that in mind according to MPD that is just police activity doesn't seem like it's a crash. So I'll keep a close eye of seeing a lot of vehicles. A lot of those emergency vehicles moving around. It's possible that they're getting ready to open things up, but I don't want to count any chickens just yet. It looks like I am seeing a police officer moving some things there in the middle of the roadway. So likely still going to be shut down for at least a little while longer. Outer loop of the beltway has the acceleration lane blocked over on the right hand side of the roadway headed past Connecticut avenue. So as you get off of Connecticut avenue onto the outer loop of the beltway, you will have a bit of a short merge. You have to jump over onto the main lanes

"Nomination for president. Keep it here for full details on these stories in the minutes ahead on WTO P. Traffic and weather on the 8s, rich hunter in the WTO traffic center. I did Virginia southbound fairfax county Parkland before you get down to the extra monument drive in fair lakes Parkway the crash remains all in right side you stay left to get by, they may have to temporarily stop traffic there to recover the vehicle that went through the guardrails would be careful approaching. Now if you're traveling nor it found you're not affected, 66 eastbound again, no major issues in your way between haymarket and rosalyn, the one thing they do have in place was the work in the express lanes, eastbound they were closed between one 23 and the beltway still waiting on the all clear on that. For now, if you're in the express lanes coming eastbound expect to be diverted at one 23, you can not continue through. Now if you're traveling on the beltway, still working on the interlude between route 7 and the doll's toll road, eventually down to one single aim to ride through the work zone. Again, for now, delays are brief. Two 70 south from Frederick down to the bellway in good shape, 95 in a bowl of a wash to park, they also running well headed south toward the beltway, works at 95 north on approaching I one 95, that works on in the process of clearing should have all lanes open soon, still working 70 westbound issue approach and pass the interchange for alternate 40 Braddock heights, and there you can both work some single file to the left 70 eastbound, all lanes are open so far. Down in Ann rundle county, cleaning up the crash, southbound four just south of plumber lane. That was along the right side of the roadway stay left to get by, north side of Ford, not affected all lanes are open. Rich hunter WTF traffic. Now to WTO meteorologist Steve prince a valley. If you're in fairfax eastbound on fair lakes Parkway underneath of the fairfax county Parkway may still be on the police direction for that crash, I 95 southbound, the usual suspects going across the aqua Quan down to one 23 northbound slowing in separate stretches between garrisonville and the Springfield interchange would travel lanes open and available there, north Ben I three 95 catch the volume as you pass boundary channel drive up to and across the 14th street bridge.
