Kermit Davis, Ole Miss
Boxer. Deal. Courtside with Greenberg. Dockage the definitive college basketball podcast. Courtside was set Greenberg. Dan dockage, and I'm Chris Connor sitting with these two guys. I don't know if I'm gonna get a word in edgewise ended is probably not and they probably wouldn't bother to. But I'm here. Anyways. The tell you what's coming up on the podcast Kermit Davis. Ole miss head. Coach is going to join us here. A little bit team. Got a great win at home against Auburn last night set you were there on the call trout was into it. Which is really nice to see it an SEC school. Maybe this is something that can be the star of building something there at all miss. We'll find out we're going to pick Slater on including Florida state and Duke on Saturday Zion continues to impress when talking a little more about him and the wooden award midseason twenty-five man, watch list is outside on a number freshman on there, as you would expect there a couple of others in there that I think doc, this is sort of the time when we put football behind us. You students are back on campus. The holidays are behind us. Now, we can really focus on college basketball and that. Twenty-five man list is sort of a nice way to sell everybody. Hey here are the top players in the country. Maybe you've seen them. Maybe you haven't seen them. But let's introduce you to some. And it's crap in my opinion. I'll tell you this right now, I'm gonna bad mood to begin. Doc, it's better than a grumpy square. Where's George Jon Morgan and look as as twenty-five long way finished or are you gonna come in here? And not let me finish. Let me finish. I look and I see Jordan Murphy on it. Hey, how about you win a game? Jordan Murphy, come out. She can he do self. So what win a game has every college coach, and I've talked to and said James Palmer James how about winning the game? How about where the game fellas? Jon Morgan, if you're gonna put Langford on there, then you should put you on Morgan ahead Lankford because you on Morgan has been better than Langford on both ends of the cord all year long. He's come a big in big spots and the guys coming in from the big ten none of them. None of other than Carson Edwards. Iggy maybe deserve to be on this list at one or cash. Winston absolutely catches Winstons the first team all American and he's by preseason player of the year. And I won't change that for anything. But I'm just telling you win a freaking game. These guys in the big ten is supposed to be so good. And then I look and they don't ever win a game. The winner doesn't have to come from this list. Old people. I think until the final eight right coach before he was finally put on that list. So the Winterton come from outside. So it's just a discussion point that were have trae Joneses. And on the list, can you put three players from one team on the list because trade Jones one of the top twenty five players in the country. The ways plan he's one of the top twenty five most important players in the country. I mean like there's a distinction. I love trae Jones. I love Xavier Simpson. I love Jordan bone. I love those guys really important to their teams. All right. So what is the wooden ward signify? Besides having to have a certain GPA and all that other stuff that they could good on in the classroom, all that stuff. And you gotta have Sam Gilbert around and his drink. I mean, I mean that sounds good. And I'm a big trade. I think he's important for the team. But I mean, I don't think he should be on that list. Seth here's what I would say. This is why I told you specifically who when you add somebody if you say trae Jones is supposed to be on. Then you gotta take somebody off. Right. I mean, that's kind of how it works. And that's why I say what I said about Jon Morgan that I would put him on and take people. I'm not sure I wouldn't put trae Jones on there. I'm not sure that I would I don't know. But I know this those two guys that are on that list for Duke if they weren't on Duke. I'm not sure trae Jones would be carrying Duke like those two guys are kind of carrying Duke. I made no sense right there. But I, but that's where I agree with you. See I think trae Jones is a connector, and he makes the gate look. He's a great defender. I mean that dude can Flatgaard. Yeah. I mean like, you know, Jordan Boca Flatgaard Xavier Simpson. We talk about. Yeah. Michigan all the time. I mean, look, he, you know, he's not as dynamic Jordan, poor and everytime, you shoot you think it's going in. Right. I mean that dude is like ridiculously good. You know Matthews can guard and this guy that, but they wouldn't be as good if you took Xavier Simpson off, but I'll say this. I do think this, and I think Iggy has played well enough that he does deserve to be on that list kit from Michigan, and he's played well in big as I mean, this kid is a freshman drops twenty four you can only play like, let's be honest. All right. The difference between big ten big five and the bottom bottom. Bottom. Wrong of NC double a basketball, which is a lot of big ten SEC teams do play. You can't really put those games in pocket for guy at Michigan when he's playing against the van state. I'm sorry. That's disrespectful, savannah state. So be it. You gotta look at the games that are big in the big games. I think Iggy has played really well. So I would keep him in there over Xavier Simpson. But to your point nobody in maybe any team defensively has been as important to their team as your Simpson has right? But I don't think he can be on. Yeah. I hear I'm looking at this list right now here, here's skies. I would take off by are you talking about this year not last year right now? This is Johnny five-man lists. Luke maye out has. Played wellness not shooting high-percentage. You know, he hasn't had the impact of these starting play better now, but he's on there. Because of what he did. Now. This one's going to be controversial unit. You might agree with you might disagree with me. Carson Edwards out. I'm with you. All right. Carson average volume. Look, they need them in the way he plays. That's great. You're thinking about winning games. I think is important. I mean, they just took him out the other night. Michigan state mcquaid was phenomenal. It was ridiculous. Can anybody else? Do that. In the big ten. That's my close is he the guy's gonna put that team on his back. He's gonna have to carry them through the big ten schedule. But did Michigan state put out the blueprint? Not just the blueprint to other teams have the personnel. Then the follow Michigan state's blueprint and shut him down. Because he is almost twenty five game coming in the blueprint doesn't change it systematic whether or not you've got a guy or guys that can follow it for forty minutes, and Matt mcquade he didn't get touched on screen. Seth. And Chris he wa- he fought through every and then and this was set up before the game. Aaron Henry who's a freshman did the same thing. Yeah. And great. It's Chris they can every one of the things when I took the West Virginia job for five minutes. Yes. And I was on a plane really good that day. I was. If you only knew hey, I rented a big old Cadillac. I stayed an oh Dallas first team. But I was talking to some guys and you may disagree with this. I don't know and this goes back, but but it was interesting. I was talking to some big east assistants. Who said look you're gonna find out that the big ten is the best scouted league in college basketball. Now, if you're gonna come into, you know, it was at the time the big east, we're just gonna play zone in garland that crap. But in the big ten, and and and other teams are better. I'm not saying, but the big ten does scout. So everybody's going to know, and they already know how to take. But can you do it for forty minutes you long enough athletic enough? I'm going to retract what I said Seth. I'm gonna keep Carson Edwards in there to this point. But he sure got taken out, and I feel a little bit bad for the kid because I don't think he knows whether he supposed to shoot every shot or make others better and got expose the other night. Yeah. The problem is he can make his bed, but no one can make him better. So every get on. On his own. I think that there's so much pressure balls in his hand so much, and I thought mcquaid and Henry did a great job getting through screens. And I thought that you know, the game plan, which I agree with you on the big ten they I have Michigan state scattered forever game. It's a joke. But the guys off the ball guys. Gordon, screeners were an guys behind the guys Gordon screeners in that game. I thought those dudes were like locked in tonight asked both to you a simple question. Probably over my head. Simple to answer. But go ahead. Does it matter who's on the wooden watch? Because unless something happens I in Williamson is going to be the player of the year in college basketball matters because it gives us something to get that, Chris I get all that I told and that's why I mean, it's locked stock. Like, here's my thing. And I love the I played the other day. I mean because he did other things. I mean, it wasn't just look like I've seen like Julius Irving play every single game when he played the Annette's torture. Bobby jones. I mean, I've seen like what don't have you seen. Right. Understanding six six and he's powerful jumps any put backs. He can I had a guy play for Long Beach state that would three sixty on fast breaks. I mean, okay, I've seen that. That's all right. The other day he rebounder ball out his area. What he doesn't get a pre. He's a pretty good ob- off ball defender. And he's a very good pass. Yeah. Is there is there other than maybe, you know, he had a couple of threes. Threes fats. Is there anything he doesn't do? Well, though. Here's the thing. Let me ask you this though. I don't think there's anything at the college level. You can't do. He can't drive through spot elevate shoot jumper. Can't do if you ever seen. He I saw him did seem it in the champions classic. But I haven't seen him do it since Dr in Spain and lean and played a contact. He'll shoot that little set three he'll dunk on someone he'll post up hard. If you're gonna if you were going to put it right now, if you were going to say right now, would you both agree signs number one? Yeah. Because he's taking over the magic. Imagine what's in the seats. It's always at the next level of putting butts in the day. Gilchrist who's number two. Who's number two? That's a good question. It's really know. That's why I'm here. He's he really is a good question. Like is RJ Barrett. Number two. No. Well, maybe that's why Zion is number one. So clearly because Arcus Howard could be regardless of your needs. You're going to take ARL. Chamari pods, Marcus. How it have to be in the conversation. I'm not putting Semari ponds. But I am put Marcus our Marcus Howard. I mean, he said fifty three the other night let I mean I like that dude. And I'll tell you the interesting thing about Marquette, and you probably see two more Dan than I have like he gets fifty three and yet Sam Houser makes that shot to go overtime like he it's fifty three and as opposed to trade Jones trae young last year. All right. He's teammates celebrate with him. And he does other things and and like he can score twenty in a row, but those guys are still in with him where I watch Oklahoma last year. And and to me trae young was doing his thing and the more he did his thing the less those other guys wanted any part of it and my wrong. No, no, no that really slipped because I had him early in the PK classic. And I didn't think that was an issue. I thought he was a little bit. We're one of the reasons I said he was Steph curry was because I thought he played with a joint teammates joined in on the joint. I didn't see that at the end. Let me let me ask. If you question about, Tennessee. Woo. You got Admiral skull field in grant Williams. I mean, I don't know that you know, what do they say in voting? They cancel each other. Our? Yeah, I don't, but I'll tell you what if you look in tonight, obviously is a big one with Kentucky. Right. I mean, if you look at Admiral goldfield in grant Williams, you can make a case. But I don't think you can make or maybe you can't I don't wanna put words can you make the same case for one of those two that you can make for preside Williamson if waves at four points one rebound the other night. I never have more points. Good point. But he hit four points. One rebound. They won by twenty on the road at Missouri. Right. I mean, so. Yeah. I mean, I just I ll grant Williams is good. I think if I had to pick right now, who's number two, Tennessee, Virginia and two or three best teams in the country. And Michigan gotta put Michigan. Stayed in their head of the same classes as Duke, and I don't think Michigan's playing great and even John and beeline, and I were talking about it before it did their game. In fact, I thought Indiana was kind of catching them at a pretty good time. But then all of a sudden, you know, they jumped out, but I think Michigan state when I watch Michigan state. I think man this point guard the he's got I'm not saying there is talented his last year. Clearly, they're not right. I mean, you to top whatever five ten picks mandate connected guys. I mean, fishing O rien, they every pass means something even without Langford and a guard. And and it's there's a joy about this particular team. And I swear to God, it's because Winston and ward have I don't know kind of brought it out. It's we I'm being too philosophical here. But they got talented when I think of you, I think of yes. I'm just saying I think right. Would you agree with that? I I think the only thing concerns Michigan state. They execute. They defend caches playing. Catch us Winston. We talked about who should be the conversation. Caches Winston his numbers are number two. He might be number two. He's averaging eighteen he's had you're more than seventeen seven and he's like seven six four. Yes. And he's actually guards every once in a while don't get excited. Well, you asked me to anybody random on this list like a rant or? He's. I mean, like guys they can in part to John Moran. The other day is better than this is beggar longer the other day, they scored seventy three points. He had a hand in sixty five of them. Stupid. Now, handsome hands the other teams points to because he averages five turnovers game. But I'm like that dude is I talked to MBA guys as a lottery, really. And he looked like he he plays like he's on the school yard east behind the back. He's the finger rolls. He's all over the place fun to watch you watch the NBA on ESPN on Wednesdays. You know what though that's a little bit. Like if may not put it on us, if we give them more publicity people fall in love with that. And I'm not saying, that's the only reason they fall in love with Zayn Williamson. But that adds you said earlier, Chris that kind of adds to it. You don't being being flashier being whatever you want is. I mean, imagine Zion. Williamson getting picked by the Knicks. What seem like that a team that is in desperate need of a star to put on billboards to say come watch. I on do his thing in this arena, whose L tickets who's the last college guy be like grandma that came out with real personality. Like, Anthony, Anthony Davis had real winning and all that kind of stuff. Who's the last college guy that had last say the kids magic asking terms of his? And that's beginning. Like, yeah. That kid plays a smile on his face. He plays hard is as could be. I just think in last college guy to be like that. But he had played with a lot. Lot of joy. I know. But I feel like when buddy healed went to the next level. He kinda disappeared on radar say, where's he playing Chris Sacramento? Yeah. I wouldn't be able to tell you I want I wouldn't either crime with you. That's why was I figure Qatar nosing. You don't said exactly I mean, you'll ever I would say I would say if you look at for the number two guy, and you go down this Lassus. Pretty close. Could how about how about Barrett. I I'm not. I'm not Barrett's improved passing the ball little bit your Mattie shoots too much. I like I like Barrett. I like Barrett. I'm not big reddish fan. I'm embarrassed made one of his last fifteen threes. I mean, reddish paid five. And Portland hachi. Murrow. You were all over hot show. I like Murray's he's off the beaten path number two next two months. Where we come back at see us tens for those of us. Call him the in wrapping these late night gates won't be off the. Studio with tonight's tonight at eleven o'clock. Preview hot. You're mer. You'll be sleeping no way. College basketball live afterward. You must watch out for listen to San Francisco probably making a close game. Because that's a pretty good team. They are in terms of what's left on right? Exactly. Point guard San Francisco's teams. But what I'm saying about this whole thing is you really can't come up with a number two number one is which is part of the reason why he will certainly be number one. Because there isn't somebody else pushing him for that number one spot. I don't think there will be hey, how much of what you know? He's even came out and said, I want to show the world more than just the dunker what I know that. But how much of the fact that he such donkey machine comes from the fact that all the way up until now in his career. That's always had to do. Now, all of a sudden for the first time in his life. He's gonna have to show a little bit more of that game who better to coach him to show more that game than coach K at least for this year going into the next level. You know, like Chris before the year and Seth set me straight because he had seen him. But I had not seen him. And every time I watched him on Twitter video or YouTube. He was dunking against players that looked like my daughter like me out there. No chance you were way too. Big. And too Bill. I'm talking about my daughter. That would alone and everybody wants to like guys in high school. We're getting dunked on and being happy about right? Yeah. I mean, he wasn't playing in New York City where guys gonna so but set set me straight on that. And I saw for myself. I think it's nice that he says it, but I don't think he has to say it because I think people that know basketball. No as Seth was just gonna say that dude's a lot more than that. We set it in wraps on Monday Tuesday. I said like the thing that was most impressive finally someone and Mike will bond said it the other day in a in on their show PTI. And he said like, look we've seen all the ducks. That's great. All right. Let's value was bekker's. I here's my thing. You say the next I pick and all that jazz. And it sounds great. How much does his game translate to the bay? What about his position, you know? Totally translate the open court and the size and he's with more bounce. I'll tell you this. I don't I don't think he can shoot it off the bounce elevate. And shoot the ball. That's my one thing. Okay. And you got to be up to make shots. Great. All right. Let me ask you quest. I don't we're gonna take the European guys out. 'cause I'm that's for Fran. Okay. Who would you take? If you had the number one pick and all things considered, but the mostly considered as how he's going to help your basketball court or basketball team on the court. Would you take would not not the shoe deals just on the court would who would you take a head of? I I don't think I take anyone because I I think this is a bad draft agree with that totally like like, you know, the even you go through this this this twenty this wooden lists twenty five nothing nothing. Here says on that guy's gonna you know, I mean, did you gloss? You know, he was terrific. Yesterday's college player. Does this game? Translate the MBA. No, even happy. Great college player came over Heathrow. His game doesn't translate Kelvin Johnson. I like him. He thinks he's going to be a solid. Pro you go right down sledge. You know, I I think Brazil is is going to chance to be a good pro K remaining Lankford. I I liked the way because he plays without the ball. And he's physical. You know? He's gotta shoot a better. But yeah, you're right. I mean, he he's going to be the guy, and I would take him before sit to me. RJ Barrett is is the Marta Rosen without the lettuces. Ooh. Anytime you throw at the end it serious about this without the F lettuces them in the modern day NBA that is a terrible thing. I think in modern day unless he's just a straight out. I'm gonna make every three like, you know, like a seven foot, you know, Serbian, you know, what I mean? I mean, because let's be honest that game unless you're Steph curry unless you're just a straight knock it out every time I touch shooter you better have some athleticism to fit as a role player though. In other words, Zion number one in whoever's got number two is the trade down because it because whoever the number two pick is really kind of like like, I it typical end of the lottery. Don sick. There's some guys guys guys overseas. And I think some of these guys have chance to be, you know, to be going to be more neat. You know, it's going to be more on need. Correct. I mean, I think he's gonna come into the league and be star day one. I really. He's a marketing, Jim. Okay. But thank I. Okay. But on the court. The addition to your point the magic esque on the kids, and I was Europe with the Kate. I he had his little brother with us on this on this trip. He was really genuinely he held his brother's hand carried him around the whole the whole time. I mean, he was really an impressive young guy. Take a quick break here on courtside with Greenberg. Dockets when we come back. We're gonna speak the Kermit Davis ole miss head coach as I mentioned, the top got a huge win against all burn at home. We're gonna talk about that. And about the the almost rebels continuing their SEC scheduling does not get any easier. They go to Mississippi State. We're gonna make some picks to that game and some several others this weekend. So don't go anywhere. All this head coach Davis joins us right now. In Kermit, the first thing I gotta say is what a great crowd. You guys had last night in that win against Auburn. I know coach was there and he saw it. But even on television. It certainly came through the students were there. That's gotta be what you're shooting for night in night out. Isn't it? It is Chris, you know, it was a special kind of early in in our first year here. Our students aren't even back in school and to have that kind of student turn out and the play at that atmosphere and when all made their runs in the second half. I mean, obviously, they want to a huge win last night current what a great atmosphere. Great win. I called it a program when a top twenty one your first year, you wanna kind of have that one game that people kind of put their arms around and kind of outdate your vision, here's deal. That was great last night. You got Mississippi State on Saturday. I mean, how do you get your dudes like from? Hey, this is what we've been working for the way. That was a great win. We're getting on the bus drive an hour and a half up to road, and we're playing against the team that just lost and wants a little piece of us. Because now we've become a bigger game. How do you how you deal with that today? Moving forward to Saturday. You know, we did says we're still not at school yet. So we got her gathered up and seven thirty just trying to get all. Auburn game out of our system, but we wouldn't need to watch it. And I read I'm kind of old school codes. We watch every second of every game. I just do it. So we watch by hour this morning until about eight thirty and then coming back here in about forty five minutes. We're not gonna do any any contact day. We'll do a bit to more. But you know, it's a huge travel regaining. I've got five guys involved in it. I've got about eight that have you know, so that a lot of significance. And so we've got to move on. And we won't do a lot of contact. And a lot of things you'd be mainly just mental stuff before Saturday with a new tipples human. He came into the SEC, and you were vocal man about how good the SEC is. And you've lived right up. You know, elevating Mississippi how easy how difficult has the transition. Ben to come over talks for. Dan, they easy for me because I'm from Mississippi. And so the great move from me, and I love middle Tennessee, and they're really any plans to every leave day and just got this wonderful opportunity. And so so it was great for me and my family, and it was easy because I can connect the dots. Real simple because I kind of just aware of everything in Mississippi and another state it would be so easy. Andy, Kennedy's are great friend of mine. He left us three really good SEC guards. And and those guys have really matured and made some progress and we've added a couple of pieces in the spring to freshman that are really have a chance they'd be all SEC players in time here, and they did that helped us so much. You went to Canada and run a foreign trip. Got lucky in my first year ever do that. And guy were awful. We're terrible. Every once in games played awful ban basketball learned a lot about ourselves and it made a ton of improvement. You know from that August. Trip until now do you ever? Do you ever ask yourself? Why like what the hell am I doing here? I had a pretty good thing at middle, Tennessee. I'm up here somewhere in Canada to see his big old Ponderosa, you're on the stand. Never mind never mind. He went for curtains to window treatment. Never mind. This is true story. We're playing we'd won a couple of games will be played. Oh, God escapes it other get up their beats us all up to Katie Coton. I mean, call to be about seventeen or eighteen and we go play the Ottawa PT's now audibly. Geez. The last part of our trip down forty four to seventeen in the second quarter quarter, forty four points, and I looked at my sister. And I said in fires at that time. Dealy or so we look back in way he though at that team. But, but it really has been a really a lot of improvement abso happy for players 'cause they really kinda again and come a really good track team you talking about you two Frenchmen knows guys are good to plane buffing enhancing those times going to be really good players. You got them late into recruiting process when you got the job, which is absolutely incredible. Those dudes can really play. Now, tell me I just for you though in a big picture like you played at St. man, I mean like walking in their use that term lightly. I mean, I'm in your coaching there. I mean, look, you're Mississippi mate. We all we joke about it. But I mean when you when you walk around, the people of all missed they've welcome you. They are excited that you're you're there and what you're doing. But that's going to be a little different, right? That the the reading play in my head coach when when it was built, and he was big part of behind with the legislature getting the body. I think pack the upper calcium in the early seventies. Maybe call seven or eight billion dollars, you know. And and so I think my brother, and I probably the first ever make a bucket there every back young. And you know, I haven't been there in a long time. If I had the last time I ever was in a game, the sissonville shoe that years ago, but yeah, I mean, that's grew up and went start high school or my dad's coach there, you know. So there's a lot of fun memory since. And I just think this though, I think the people don't miss exactly what my leeches is. And they were gonna play a really really good team. In is done a great job. But nobody in that building a to beat Mississippi State more than I promised that. So, you know, we'll have our hands full days at heart. I mean, there's not even thought right? I mean, I'm thinking to myself if I went to produce a came back and played in the end, I don't wanna beat the hell out, Indiana, just because. Right. I mean, there's no like people that would even question that have no understanding. What's out defensive your dad? I said, really? Children. That's not even close second. He loves Mississippi State. That's not even close second on Saturday. So that's just I mean, that's just part of it. And, but it will be a lot of a lot of friends that I seen in a long time. They've been going to games there for a while. Your team. No, man. I tell you that you talk about buying in, Dan. You gotta watch these dudes. Like, I watched guys last night. We were putting them hope to turn up the sound just watch the game. I mean, I I know you made the right point carbon about old school coach. I mean like you coach your guys you coach them hard yet. They are playing for you. How satisfying as a coach like like you put together plan? I sat and watch walking in in the walk through. Parents. Davis was awful. He was off you came out and said I love that kid. But man, you know, he he was just awful walked for today. And he just let it up which which once again proves through sometimes has nothing to do with the real game. I know he's not listening today. It was it really is. It's satisfying. I just think that, you know, you've always I'm sure Dan same way, you know, think he had to be able to coach your best players the hardest. I do think that made the judgment ten or twelve years ago my coaching on way to negative early on, you know. And I think what happens if you coach heart. He ruse to make these gas field that they're good talents. I think sometimes I made mistake way back coach are and then kind of tell me what bigger players for somebody. You know? That's not very good combination. So I really changed. And and we tried to tell them that. It's not gonna be a talent issue. It's going to be how replies and I think they bought into that. And I think you know, what thing we do. Next play next practice is ever any Gretz. Just next deal. We spent a lot of time with our guys off the floor. And and they really have they thought in and just been like, I said, you know, we went we early on coached effort and attitude. Coach no attitude now, you know, we still every coach coaching little effort in cracked this. But but that part of it's been satisfied nine in a row. You are. He haven't lost in longtime which makes the season really fun because as you know, better. You know, you wake up and you've lost. It doesn't matter. You're done. It's over it's horrible. But as you move this four, so many coaches say, you know, I'm having I wanna get my system in you. You went to Canada all that kind of stuff. Do you feel like in your first year with the success you've had defeated like you're coaching your not final? But this is how you guys are going to play. Or is there still some yet to come? They put your total stamp on it if I'm saying that right? Good point. I think the think in a first year program, Dan, we hadn't gone to Canada Whitney still trying to implement different things, you know. And I really my notes longtime from that. But I do think that we've kind of got all of our packages in greater everything. No. But but I do think that that we're starting to evolve a little bit. I gotta grow our bench for we're really kind of seven and a half players eight, and I really need it in this league with everything about, you know, Saturday Vanderbilt and wins the all of and Saturday regatta LSU, I gotta get a bench long. And that's one thing that I hope that we can do for the next two or three weeks. You said something halftime, I thought it was really cool. I forget exactly what you said that you said in the post game also. But what you said that you guys all the time we've earned this or we've worked for this. Or what's that little saying, you you say gas were built for Bill for for things that that we've done sit are very team. I think we're gonna go through things they're gonna hopefully make us successful in the road. And this. Leaks and tell them all the time that these things that were that were Bill for because of things that that you guys are hard you work and pace a practice. And you know, so hopefully, those guys are starting to believe it the only thing you gotta ask them, Chris. You gotta ask him one question. What's that? We don't know. What is it? What do you? Chris. I mean, you're the king of football. You gotta know what question you gotta as the thing that I was thinking about coaches, are you ready? Well, how do you? Here's the thing. Too much bigger picture question in that is growing up in the south in country your football school. How do you turn? How do you change that mentality? Because you got like Jamie Dixon, trying to TCU. You got people all across the country. Trying to go into a football school to say, I've got a somehow go from a program that has pockets of success to turn this program in the one that has success every single year on the basketball court and get people's attentions away entirely from the football field. You know, number one, I am a huge selfish conference football fan. And and I love our football coach here. Matt, luke. And and so you're never gonna take the place, and I'm not trying to end. In fact, football SOGA football, getting our campus. It's great for all of us in recruiting recruiting leaking is there's better weekends in the grove in an Oxford replaced SEC weekend. So there's just so many great programs that that go together. You know, obviously, you know, whether it's Michigan or Oklahoma or different places. I mean, there's great basketball great football. And so we just I know our people were starving for kind of some success in the winter. And then I was even basketball. They're going to go see my beyond goes baseball team and be a top five top ten team in the country. That's what I love is just a ton of sports on this campus that have done really. Well, I I I'm disappointed that but he doesn't let the Russian court because yesterday as the Commissioner court rushing that's legit. That been on total. I was begging on TV, I say, this is totally legal court stole. There's no doubt about forget about almost people are knows light blue shirts. Get out of the way, bring them on. Everything's going to be fine. But if you're gonna talk current Davison, we're talking about, you know, oh miss. I mean, he does it better than anyone. He actually at his tip off banquet, I spoke at he actually set me up to ask this question, which eight hundred people had stipple bankers. Crazy. I mean, he's put his arms around this whole community. So I'm gonna give you one more time. We did on national TV yesterday now on the podcast. So are you ready? Year right, high tardy, gosh almighty who in L A. We say flimflam him ole miss by damn gotta learn to say by now, I got it. Got it. Thirty thirty on abusive language coming up here. Pretty soon. Say that in. So accent though, these. These. Northern accent a little strange. Congratulations. Good luck this weekend. Man. Thank you. All right. So coach Davis got a great win against Auburn. But your point coach right off the bat. You got to put that in the rear view mirror because they're going on the road at Mississippi State to take on a really good bulldog team on Saturday. So let's make some picks. And let's start with that one. What do you think going gonna win that one interesting game because the strength of omiss is a lot of ways to strength of Mississippi State. You're talking about a veteran backward. Lamar Peter's pair weatherspoon's Quinn Darien Nick that place will be rocket episode of game is elevated it's become a bigger game. With miss having the success in Michigan state. I mean, it's just me. Mississippi State come enough that law, South Carolina. Obviously, not a good thing. I'm gonna go with Mississippi State on the road in a very physical game. I think they got a little bit better depth over on, you know, cover. Davis was talking about that. And the bench play of Mississippi State is really good. I think it's gonna be really good basketball game close game. And I think at home you can hit us bells know, the Seattle's ringing and all that stuff. It'll be tough Puffer for this to win that game on road. Yeah. They're not winning need more cowbell. You know, I like Mississippi State. I will say man, what a great what a great resurrection for the state of Mississippi. Not only do you have two guys that can coach and get winning teams. But you got to recognizable guys. Right. I mean, it's not and you got you know, two guys one has been to the final four numerous times three times has been Holland. And then the other guy Kermit everybody remembers him beat Michigan state, and I don't think that Mississippi maybe next year year after but I don't think they're ready to go in there. Mississippi states playing too well Benz two good coats. It'll be too tough to freshman. Really good team. I think okay man when I watched last night, I looked like Duke and Florida state bowl tournament teams. But now, you'll Florida state's trying to say we belong in that upper echelon of the ACC Virginia by fifty okay. What they've got a chance to rectify that situation at home against the number one team in the country on ESPN Saturday at two o'clock, doc, I would I was. Surprised? I think that the Mississippi Mississippi State game might be arrack fight. But I'm not sure this one is a look until further notice nobody has been more. Well, maybe people have. But I've really liked her are really like Leonard Hamilton. I really like Leonard Hamilton team. But Seth to your point. Look, I don't think that I think Virginia's really good. And I, but I don't think Virginia's athletically where they should be able to come into your place and beat you so badly like they did against Florida state so up until further notice, I'm going to take less Savoy, loses his mind, I'm gonna take Florida state getting beat and Florida state getting beat by double digits now, you know, guy makes shot co for maybe all that athletes stuff today, they fine but Dame you can't lose by one hundred ten that was at that was advocate. I'm sorry. It was at for genius change. Yeah. Yeah. But I'm watching the news never a game. Never a game. What do you qualify? First of all this is not your father's Virginia team. They are long in athletic games. A little bit better. Guess quite you can you want. I've said this. I've saw some Duke I saw Kansas when atas Buki I've seen Michigan state. I think athletically, there are notch below all. These teams Virginia I've seen Michigan. I think Virginia's doesn't mean they can't beat every team. But I think they're not s- below. And if you're if you're backward, I think it other than the Andre hunter. Well, they got the key as starting. Longer. And I mean. You're you're going to find a state Virginia me. Yes. No one going to. What are you going with Duke do? Here's what is what is due feast off of turnovers going the other way, what is far state not do. Well, take care of the Bancaire to basketball. So what does that mean? Transition like the teams that are going to beat Duke or teams that don't turn it over can rebound on the defensive end and our officiant offensively. So like, I said, I think the Virginia's Domitian the Michigan state's. Rebounds. Tennessee's can have the best chance North Carolina. I'm not sure. No. Of course. I think they'll beat him once because the way that reverie is North Carolina doesn't have the consistently till Kobe white learns how to really run a team. Yup. And not play at his own pace. And hope everyone else comes along with them. I don't see it. But I will have do Quinn. This guy's both have Duke Saturday afternoon. This is a very interesting game in the big twelve TCU in Oklahoma. And it's an Oklahoma team. We talk about it all the time addition by subtraction this year. Coach, where's I gave him play? Just add oklahom- adults. It's not look trait. Trae young was really phenomenal in just he was a phenomenon I guess, but they're back to playing basketball. They were eighty fifth and defense Fisher year ago, they could guard anyone they couldn't pay the ball. They were they were bad defensively. Now, they're really good defensively. You know, they're good offensively. But they have more guys that can play and make plays Christian James actually last year was a mere show. Themself? He scorn at. They got those two fifth years transfers that have been good Brady Matic doing his impersonation of Larry Bird with the new look, great look. I mean, I think at home Oklahoma once again, I like Oklahoma's team, I like Oklahoma's toughness. I like Oklahoma's coach I think Oklahoma's gonna beat TCU I think this is a much better Oklahoma team in every area except taking bad shots. I thought last year they got very good at taking bad shots. Stay in the big Kansas in Baylor. This is the four o'clock game on ESPN, and it's a Baylor team that at nowhere beat an Iowa State team the other night who coming off the win against Kansas. See thought I was state was going to be the pick in the big twelve. Maybe the separates right? Yes. You think maybe the Kansas is going down. And I was stayed finding with gonna be their year with Shane company, then they go out to Waco when they got beat by Bao's out Baylor place. Kansas dock. We got in this one. I'm going to go with Kansas. Just because I always go with Kansas. And it seems to me this year teams that are kinda teams can't back up wins. Like, they get a big win. And then they get being, you know, the poster child. That was the other night. Seth New Mexico. Coke crushes, right? They crush Nevada and in couldn't play against UNLV simul say Kansas. I think there are some teams that are impervious to good or bad. And I didn't Kansas is one of them. And until further notice I'm gonna take the other team when a team has a big win coach. You're calling a game last night miss. You didn't see Balji who's this new guy at the red shirt off Kansas because as a boo keys athletic. I watch alley oops for him. So how how does that? Another athlete. They can still play small and having guided confli around Lawson. Bill cells had his way with Baylor. All right. Let's let's put away. Obviously, I think that Kansas is going to win the game. I think that they still have to get more consistency added a guard play. I don't think Lawson's a guy that can carry you too big twelve championship by himself. So they got that young back court Quinton Grimes dots. Those guys are good. But you know, when you have a Buki your head turns every time he's on that left block because you're wondering when it's going into. And then once he gets it. What are we doing? Once it gets because you're probably not going to that. So I think Kansas wins this game. And as I said the other day, I do I. Look, I Bill self great. But I I am going with the field. Okay. But let me let me ask you this. Then. I want you to. Gutless call though too. Other all nine other teams other than Kansas. Right. He's really not. It's going to be Texas Tech. I was state, and I thought actually piece you could be conversation. Some let me play regio Fisher the other night. Right. They did. But let me ask you this question. If you if you didn't if can't just never had you don't as Buki this whole year. If you didn't expect him to be on the team when you had looked at Kansas versus everybody else in the big. They're not as good as everybody else. I think there's still three one they have. No, Fred Coulter. Still the best team in the league starting to freshmen who are great and Jerrell Vic is better as books on a court Quinton Grimes better when I was booties on the court. I like the kid Garrett. I think that he plays really really hard. But no, I think that like I was shocked. I was state like I I was state is really good like really good. I think that Texas Tech. Like, here's the win the big twelve. And I said this the other day, you've gotta have a home coach. Court to match the fog, Texas Tech is developing that I state has that agile. I'm not sure as you go through the rest of the league. I'm talking about not Kansas is coming down to your rivals come to them. But each and every night who else in in the big twelve has that same environment because that's the only way if teen straight years, or is it fourteen fifteen honest to God. I mean, okay, you're not playing against apparently West Virginia stinks, Oklahoma states now. Stay so people kids estate playing well, and they came back again Twenty-one down West Virginia. Scorn a scored points. I mean, Kansas dean weight is out it hurts them. And they just a little bit of magic. They caught in a bottle. They can really defend, but it can't score point is not picking the entire league. You're basically saying Kansas is going to be Texas Tech. And and I was state, maybe maybe Oklahoma. Yeah. Maybe. Yeah. I mean, look, Chris welcome to my world. Every time we're on here. He's picking the field and he acts like he's. And every year is wrong. And every every. About that every year every year it's nine teams versus. I haven't thought it every year. It's been one year. And I was fatty last year. He also said Iowa in the final four last by the way. You're you're. I was last year state. Always got hop on sleeper. You actually pick banking today. You did when I urge made up. A good move. Is game. No. It's it. That's your. Yeah. That's it. All right. That's it. You pick those four games. We'll see how they play out on Saturday should be fun weekend. Again. Everybody's back. Now. Now football's done, and I got to be with you for eight hours. On on Saturday. We're going to have the right? Jay, we'll going to be with us or no it's about weekends anymore. He's gotta get up. We'll be watching the colts take on the chiefs while broadcasting Georgia Tech, and Sarah, you show a little respect to the jackets checking said that because. Oh, I can't wait. It's an accused. We're going to Joe his night before it's going to be big Lee. Roth coming back on. I here's my thing. Now sudden site a little bit better. Yes. Your guy James coaching yield. Truthfully. I love doing games there. I wanna give shots to Georgia Tech because Qatar went to Georgia Tech. And when the game is a forty point game. I'll be yelling Andrew luck throat a ball to the team York the York. Damn good spot. Yeah. The york. Yes, he'll jackets are not ready to win on the road. I don't think they think gee, tech a tough game the other day at home, but going to the carry don't might be a little bit. They slowed it down. Right. Yeah. They did that game's going to be a crawl. I v neck game sixty two. They won't be. They won't be able to throw it in place. Combined. Maybe all right. Just want to let everybody know. I'm kind of knifing my way into this podcast guys. At the buzzer. Sometimes they do. Courtside with Greenberg. Dockage the definitive college basketball podcast. Welcome courtside with Greenberg dockage talking all things college basketball and life because they ends lifetime experiences are just absolutely mind boggling, but we're going to stick to hoops today. We're going to stick to the verdict in the F B I trial against those three defendants dockings ghetto and Merle code, and then as this drama, and at Solway describe it man is drama unfolded with Merle code Christian Dawkins Jimmy guide and the jury was out one day two days three days the whole atmosphere. Routed almost was like, a a book would read in a summer and a lot of ways, you know, the types of accusations that were being made. But then the verdict came down. What was your first impression when the verdict came down not surprise? I mean, it's ninety four percent conviction rate. Seth. Sad. You know, you don't I don't think anybody that has ever ever done with these guys are doing anticipated going to jail over maybe the NC double A, maybe their own. I don't even think they thought it was illegal or against NCWA rules based on these kids hadn't been there. I I was I was sad for them. Glad for the sport. I guess. I think that college basketball. You get kind of tired of a couple of things you get kinda tired of people saying everybody cheats, and you also get kind of tired of people say I do. Anyway, people say, well, you know, we everybody knew there were rumblings. Everybody knew I didn't know it was going on. I know I if you told me that the assistant coach at Louisville would have met in front of a gas station and giving some kid hundred thousand from schuch, I didn't know I do size kinda sad for those guys. I don't like see people go to jail. But in a way, I'm really happy for the sport. And I'm also anxious to see what happens moving forward who flips who starts talking for the guys get involved. I think it's it's ongoing is also I will say this. And this is something Seth that doesn't matter. But her lot of people in the sports media say, well, this shouldn't have gone to trial. Well, I talked to, you know trial, lawyers, and they're like, whoa, that's fine. People can say that. But the truth of the matter. Is the only matters whether to Jerry things it should have gone to trial jury thought it should have gone to trial. So that over our it's not over. But that's it you don't they convict? And now we see what the fallout is. And follow could be that in the next two trials those. Defendant. We start to line up now. Wait a second. These guys are going to be guilty. I don't want to seven to ten years are right. I'm gonna start to sink and the judge. I think made a strong statement in terms of how he handled the trial because he basically did not make it about the AA made it about the incident. But here here's a couple takes that that I have one please take your head out of the sand of you. Don't think the Hugh companies and universities are partners their partners. You don't pay Kansas one hundred ninety one million dollars. If you're not their partner, and when you're a partner, and let's just use Kansas. An example, you're not paying them one hundred ninety one million dollars for the football team. All right. You're paying one hundred ninety one million dollars for their exposure of the basketball team. Now, look, I'm not condoning anything that transpired. I mean to me. It's absolutely sickening to see what transpired, but these shoe companies, and these universities are partners. They're in it together. Why do you shoe companies have grassroots programs? They have grassroots programs for two reasons. One to identify the next Michael Jordan number two to be a support system and a lot of ways to their universities that they sponsor why does Kansas and this is just my philosophy. I'm not saying strew once Kansas time with Adidas not Nike probably one the amount of money. Number two is there's not eight thousand schools there's very few Adidas schools, so therefore with all the grass roots programs. They almost potentially have the pickett'll litter. Number three is like this. Recruiting process with the companies and players start too early age. And you know, in eighth grade, it's you know, can you play for team that you get free gear a sweatsuit bag in ninth grade. It might be the parents asking, well, I want to be at the travel to my son's events by the Jews and seniors like we heard in the hearing you've got parents pimping their own children. So I mean, this a lot to wrap your hands around. And like do we say that well by these guys being convicted is going to end what's going on? I don't know if it's going to end what's going on. I mean, there's always going to be people that are gonna make their own decisions and push the envelope and look outside the box. But it bothers me because I really believe and I'm not going to point fingers at any school, and we're gonna get into this next question. But if Vom school X, and I'm going to school. You don't think this conversation takes place a? A what? Things are going really. Well, we're excited to be part of the three three stripe life, but you've got a bunch of players in your grassroots program and tell you what anything you could do to help us. We would really I mean, you know, we need play we need that doc, truly bad. I mean, he he's a guy that could put over the top. He's a guy could get us to elite eight to the final four. All right anything. You could do, you know, you know, please help us get this kid because you know, you guys have relationships with his AAU coach people, and you can find ways to do things that, you know, basically idol, I can't do I wanna stay at. If you don't think that conversation takes place take place every day. Yeah. Every day. I I gotta tell I mean. I don't know. I'm not gonna lie. I don't know companies at schools are partners. I think they are. But my experience like one point I was working for a guy who was the most influential guy in college basketball, Bob Knight. And we didn't do that we kind of treat the shoe company guy, like get the hell outta here. And I know the game is changed. So I'm gonna say absolutely happens. And I think the trial proved that it happens. I let me ask you this. The Susan's right now. And. They're they're looking at the Sylvia Sousa while you're one they have a approach contract that he supposedly. But they couldn't verify his hands. His signature was absolutely joke university like be signed signed it. I mean, it's it's a joke. So the university, obviously is to me that just says lack of troll point simple. But more importantly, if Silvio Souza's guilty until proven innocent. Why hasn't the university taking any position on coaching staff? Drives me nuts pain, and I had this conversation yesterday. I mean, and and actually said if you read what the chancellor said yesterday came out in a vote of Conwell support oh about competence, but certainly support of the basketball program and Bill south. It was almost like they're saying well was like they're saying in this in this release that, hey, look, we did an internal investigation brought outside people and we found nothing. We're good. Let's go Bill self. I think it's absolutely absurd. That. That the player get suspended and Kurtis Townsend or Bill self. I'll name don't care. I mean, our coaching. It's it's absurd to me. It's disgusting to me. It's it's like I listened. And I know you did too. I read the excerpts of this trial. I saw the text exchange transcripts and out of that Silvio the Sousa maybe should be suspended from Kansas. But at the very least at the very least the coaches of Kansas should have the absolute same punishment at the very least easer the adults in the room. These are the people, you know, wasn't self the head of the NABC were guardians of the game. And all that happy horse bleep. It's disgusting to me. And and last thing, and I'll let you chime in or China anytime, you want self actually sits up there as a moral authority when they announced it and we're going to quote, hold this kid out. It's a joke. I mean, let's the great will Royce Waldman said it best get fired for anything. And I mean anything in coaching except for losing. And you'll always have a better job. Bill Bill is president than B C. The game was last year. And and and here's here's the thing. I mean, I'm not condoning what happened because I think what happened is one hundred ten percent wrong. I just see I don't know. Why? Because here's the until the rules change. Here's the thing that that like intil the rules chain you abide by the rules. Now, if you don't if you think players should be paid. If you think you don't agree with the amateurism rules, if you that's you're right. And I respect it. I have no problem whatsoever. You know view think that players are being exploited that. You you ever, right? Thing is different. I think is what do I gotta say to Saint Peter to get in. And if it's, hey, I gave a bunch of money to a kid that need a bunch of money to hell with it. I look at you can look at it through all that basketball nonsense. But that's just basketball nonsense the rules. If I if I if the worst thing I do in my life is give a kid and his dad a hundred thousand dollars that needs a hundred thousand dollars, and I got an answer for them doing. All right. All that rule. And that's fine. You know, your opinions fine. Here's the deal. You know, you always said like we and we've. Everyone's doing this. So I mean, I one. I said. Not everyone is doing. Yeah. All right. So some people say, you know, what here's the deal. I would I like to be able to do that. Yeah. To so. And so need more. I don't know if Bowen's almond needed one hundred thousand did he need Andre one hundred thousand right. You know what I mean? You know what? I mean. He needs twenty to play the right? You know what? I mean. I mean, like I mean, I mean, Sylvia the Susan allegedly. We don't know for sure did his guardian needs sixty thousand dollars from allegedly another. It's Douchen Maryland or under armor will never to go to Maryland where he didn't really want to go. But you know, you had a match it. I mean, here's the deal. I have no problem with with people, disagree with my opinion. I and I had a whole thing about, you know, getting lead into the gates. I mean. Whatever happens happens. I guess, you know, Jewish guys don't worry about that. But but but intil you wanna have a level playing field. Until it is changed. You have a choice. Yes. And that's the that's the thing. I mean, a shoot I mean, it's just it's just the way it is. But you know, to me why does you companies get involved in grad? Do you think do you think their heart? Do you think colleges should give up their money? If you want to clean it up should colleges give up their Dita's money should colleges give up their Nike money under whatever. No. I don't think they should give up. They should also not act like they're not a partner with whom whomever. They're they're dealing with an should also not put their head in the sand and say, you know, what? Re if we're a partner, and we're in this thing together that we would like your support in helping us build our brand, quote, unquote. And as we build our brand, you're building your brand, we're doing the side by side. Do you think Hugh companies to for for kids to vilify shoe companies when they know that they got in bed with issue companies? And there's a reason that that, you know, this is grassroots Bastable the reason that they want support an access more greater access to those players. Let's not four cells who in your opinion is ultimately at fault here. I just think I think what what's alternate for falters. Is people want to acquire talented people wanna win Coates? You know? So I think the coaches are culpable as as anyone. There's no doubt about it. But now we're looking at only one form of this next two trials we're going to be looking at money managers agents. But my man agents, they don't have they don't have a market of coaches, don't set the market. Or I think I think the money matters the age it's like right now recruiting all about having relationships with right? But if the if the room if some money manager comes up to you and says, hey, I got you know, tugs Bowen whenever the hell. The kid's name is. We need hundred K any and every coach says no paying the money every. Every cent. I let me different way of every coach is now that's unethical. We he's an ineligible player. We're not doing it. If every coach said that there's no marketing the whole thing goes away. Yeah. Or the or the money Magid says a I'm really close with this kid. You know? I'd love him to play for you. All you do is protect. So when it comes out, I can sign them. And you know, that's not right Cording to the rules. And if coaches had any ethics particularly out of our leadership, and they said absolutely not those that's not how this game is being played the market would go away. Now, it's never going to happen. It's pollyanna world. But if there is no market from these coaches, then there is no money manager. There is no of this. And this is where there are been other industries have cleaned themselves up. This is my biggest problem. I biggest problem is we can divert to Q companies money managers agents dads. Blunt the truth of the matter is there's a market that the coaches agreed to and set all in the most frustrating thing Seth. The dudes that are the presidents of the NABC Samson. Denny crum's Bill are always involved in this crap. So you got the quote president of the guardians of the game. Who what are they gardening garden a game the garden the gates of their their university? I guess they're guarding their alumni guarding what their contract by by being the fiery us and winning game. I mean coaches set the market. -pinion now. Eight look is told bone in them. No. Yep. He set that market. There is no market for you here at Michigan state, and I respect to live in hell out of that. If Patino said no or he taught his guys to say, no, you know, what there's no market some coaches have done in you know, you, and I both know Tom did that with Boeing, it's great. Everybody knows it now because it was in the trial, but you know to me south. Simple. Simple simple. A look. Here's a line you knowingly commit a major knowingly committed major violation you are banned from coaching division. One basketball. You can go January. You wanna mangle coach division to division throughout care? Go to pro. We're not saying you can't coach just can't coach in this. Because you had tuning screw it up. And I think that's going to happen. Because I here's what's going to happen. This is the tip of the iceberg, right in my opinion. And and when I say that I mean like this next trial think about the hours and hours of Tate, and interviews and wiretaps that were not allowed to be played in this trial. I mean, it was salacious conversation between we'll Wade, and you know, some dude I don't even know who guy was regarding an international player. So once though I in less, those those wiretaps and. Up under wraps in aren't exposed. I'm there's more to come. This is the tip of the iceberg. But this is the lowest hanging fruit to send a message to the next two trials to try to basically get guys to sing. Work seven I sat next to. FBI on my flight home from the media date. And he said he said, this is where it begins. This is not the middle. This is surely not the end, and this verdict now sends a message to the defendants in the next two trials to say. All right. You want to go to jail, that's fine. Or do you want to help us and basically save the rest of your life? You know being in Jefferson twenty years. Well, also got any maybe mentioned earlier in the podcast got up code dock ins now they have even a big and I was talking to defense attorney yesterday because I'm trying to get ready for this. And I'm trying to know and he's like, look if the government thinks Gado, code and dock and still has value to them. They will try to get them to flip and cut a deal with you know, they're already convicted. So those three are looking for jail. If they don't think there's value if the government is. Done with them. Then guess what you're facing whatever sentenced to judge puts down, and here's the other thing. And I think most people know this in the state of Indiana, you know, you do a good day for a bad day. So you get ten percents. You can get out and five federal government. You've got eighty five percent of your no matter what you do eighty five percent. So you go ten years you go eight and a half years. Yeah. Indiana, you go ten years ago five so look they're being tried in federal court is totally different. And there is a huge incentive forgotten code and dockets to flip am, but but that's only if the government thinks there's value in them flipping. It's a it's a hell of a deal Seth coming up. You're right. It's a hell of a deal. This is the start. This is just the very beginning. No. It is obviously ringing out all throughout college athletes yesterday. I was at ABC, and it was it was interesting. You know, usually means as a celebration of the season and the start of the season seasons. Been moved up a couple of weeks and people get ready. They've played quote, unquote, secret scrimmages which allowed to talk about after the fact, but not before the fact 'cause they're secret which is a rule in south that owner stand. But they're not secret if their secret, then why are you talking about affects they were secret sick, right? But I have to admit it was you know, with the with the hearing going on. And I was there prior to the verdict. Everyone was on a little bit pins and needles if he had Jim Larranaga there who obviously was involved in the little side of the of the trial, though, he seemed in in pretty good spirits. You had coach K talk about a blip. And then he had to define what a blip was. So I mean, you know, that was a focal point. And he redefined that blip is bared really think it's it's choice of words on radar screen, which I didn't understand he's being k. Yeah. And you know, you had, you know, a number of different coaches. I wouldn't you know, basically say that it's a concern. But it's not across the board. But it was surely a topic of discussion. And you know. How you you were big ten media day that was the start of the trial. What's your take around the country from the the coaches that we speak to all the time. You know, Seth I wasn't really that wasn't really any angst or concern out a big ten media day. I mean, those guys are don't think we've heard a big ten coach involve you mentioned Maryland early. Maybe that's involved. But I they I asked guys but truth a matter is nobody really was like, yeah, we're watching it. But. Trying to get my team ready. So again, I've always thought this. I mean, there's been a couple of sections in my time around the big ten, but I've always thought the big ten is pretty straight up territorial you Indiana recruits. Indiana, Ohio house tape recruits michi-, Michigan recruitment, you know, that kind of stuff. So I don't I think that's changed a little bit. No question. But I just don't I didn't feel anything different Seth. I just didn't think anybody really had that big concern about it. I will say this though, Seth I gotta believe now that we've seen guilty verdicts. Everybody's sitting there thinking who did I talk to did? I might could I have been on tape anywhere. You know what I mean? I mean because. Sam let's be honest. I mean, we I don't know if you've said this yet on his show, but if we've all talked to the different guys covering this. If the verdicts yesterday were innocent for those three guys there was a sense that may be the United States government was going to back off and the other sense, if they guilty, which it was there's a sense that they're gonna go stronger with this. So yeah, they've got it. Yeah. A blip about blip. A blip of the of the of the wiretap conversations have come into play so far who knows who else? Hey, says wiretaps and what else is on those wiretaps the mood in the ACC. See to me was a little bit. I would say the coaches were I wouldn't say on edge because you know, like, you speak the Braun brand alley speak Jimmy Christian their business as usual. But you know, I think if you speak to the people maybe that recruiting those guys I would say cautious. You know? What would be interesting? It would be interesting to see if Brad Burnell who went down, you know, supposedly to the wire with Duke right resign, Williamson sure really talked to Brad, Brunell. He's like man looking back at the discussion was I Williamson Kansas family needing a house money and seeing that, you know, I wonder if he feels like man, I got to frauded here. I mean, like I never involved in this because I was never offering this kind of stuff assuming he wasn't like I, you know, it's like one of those deals where even I look back. Speiss is a program in Indiana. And species name came up in his trial where they were trying to get kids that bone and other people offering eight ten twelve thousand dollars in working with working with colleges. And I remember two kids camp Stevens and Jamal Davis back in the nineties. We couldn't even get involved with Jamal Davis shows up at my house. He's from my own town a few times, we couldn't get involved with because they were playing with speech. We so I wonder this whole thing, you know, were they paying back then obviously they were that we really not have a chance way so much time. And I gotta feel like man, if I'm if I'm Brad Burnell, I'm like, she's we wasted a lot of time here and had no chance, you know. What I mean by that is that that's kind of inside coaching kind of stuff. But yeah, I'm surprised they didn't keep you involved. Just because I think a lot of times occurring at certain prospects will keep certain schools in invest to legitimate their recruitment. And then they go where they go. I mean. That's why. If you were Brad Burnell, and again, people this is why you listen to podcasts because we're giving you the real stuff on coaching like this is real coaching stuff. If you Brad banal you suffer over losing that kid, right? Now, you reenters stuff. How would you would you feel I interest to hang angry and relieve interest? Why relieve explained relief part because you don't want. I wasn't. I wasn't party at all stuff. They knew that. I wasn't going to go in that direction interest. Therefore, it was not that was not even in the conversation. And that's why clemson's name has not come up, and I owed a in. The course of this thing. Let me ask you this. If you're ready to coach at Clemson, and there was a room or two years ago that you were thinking of letting brand I'll go and hire will Wade me ask you how does he feel right now? Use your word man, relieved. You know what I mean? Founded he's relieved Patino still dumbfounded. He's walking around in circles somewhere in Louisville does being dumbfounded bumping into buildings but excess like in my world. This is just my world. If our Nate d it would be you gotta be kidding me. Particularly if it's a guy that I hired, you know, over a guy like Brad has been successful enough there to keep his job obvious. But if I I'm gonna take the next step and higher will Wade. And now, we'll wait is going to be all over this stuff. Seth I go to was that song. By Garth Brooks. Sometimes I think God for unanswered prayers. You know what I mean? You know, what I mean to you? That's some think gun. Foreign answered praise. Sorry. That's there goes the podcast. So you know, on that on that note that we've digressed when we come back. We will have live in person on the air, not your head coach Mike break. Code not only saves people money, but also has a ninety seven percents customer satisfaction rating. It's obvious to them. You should switch because. Yes. Switching to gyco is a no brainer. Oh, no is the dust one. His only natural Prentice dust. On the on his run along. Then say this big huge. Welcoming in a guy from your state, your state a little ways from Indianapolis your state, the one the only nineteen years at Archer date. Does it his own way? He's new thing. He's the Frank Sinatra of the is it does it his way my man, Mike break. Good morning, coach brain how is life. Good more more. Your colder here even in this status get cold, but you know, that we had made chance to hang out with you yesterday down there, Charlotte. Back to reality back to practice. We're getting ready actually fan. We're gonna scrimmage Cincinnati bankers life on Sunday evening. So we're gonna find out a little bit of scrimmage. Wait a second. Yeah. That. That's right. Oh my God. Catch. Hey before we get into anything. I was just singing a little Garth Brooks on this. Did you go to the show and Notre Dame stadium? And it was on. I it were. It was snowing. Thirty minutes before the show the stadium was full what I'm thinking. They're not gonna show beta laser show, thirty minutes. There was noted everything and everybody states or the first concert at the stadium and put on a show. Unbelievable. Really cool. I saw a year ago here in bankers life, and I'm not the biggest FAM. I'm right. Holy hell that dude can put a show on. That's what I said the same thing. Listen. But I'm like, okay. I man he's a show is former and so were it was really cool. And I guess we're gonna start there with some more cops or you know, newly renovated stadium because it has so much else. We can do. It's awesome. Sent that's absolutely man. It's so impressive guys renaissance men. We went to that's the. You guys go to concerts? That's how low your level renaissance man and Seth Greenberg world because you go to Garth Brooks, concert them car. She's come on. He'll Billy slim raise the level. You're killing me. All right, Mike. I gotta ask her. I didn't ask yesterday because we talked about it this this verdict. Goat comes down at everything. Just what what you what's your take on on on the whole investigation and everything that's going on in our game. It sure does sound like since yesterday's guilty. Very that. We got a chance to air some more things out that may become forward. You know, just reading how this think unfold with the next set of trials, and man, I think that thing we gotta take we gotta get it all out rescue it all out. Harry all out. All take. Listen as a sport. And and even the coaching position has a whole kind of a little bit of a head. You know, I think one of the interesting things, you know, meaning of Eric is, you know. Let's figure out noon. What the agents were all those years to get that out to let's go all out. And and let's try and see if we could move forward. Police going to take us sometimes I mean, I it is. I think. I think they're some socks is actually trying to communicate for the first time somebody yesterday. I don't know this rule was the right thing. But they specifically said that they passed it at a direct reaction to Condoleeza Rice is commission suggestion. So, you know. You know, we're trying to do some stuff here and the shoe companies. I think we know they're going to stand down for a while. I mean after what's going on? So I think from the grassroots point they're going to a little bit. And they've said they would give some transparent, and they're trying to what you know, the campaign. Komen put together, you know, those things criticize we're not gonna get an A. This can we get like a receipt? Plus the first time we try this, and maybe three years from now these camps and burns in July to a main. So you know, I think we do have some cooperation. And even gator man, let's take medicine, and let's what we gotta do. Hey might. I was I woke up this morning when I do is. I check my emails, particularly my show. See what people wanna talk about? And I got so many of these go to you and ask you will this corruption trial, which is we talked about ended up with guilty verdicts. Well, that's scare some cheaters that scare people. I think it can be deterrent. Dan, the for example, shoot companies right now, you know, we all know their their heads of state went to their grass roots. People said, I may know anything everything has been going on. But I'll tell you what we better down. If it has, you know, I mean, I think at least that has backed up and that was an avenue for you know, some of this money flow. And so I I do think it can be a deterrent as well. My. For saying as a coach, and you've obviously lived your entire life, squeaky clean and all that. Did you ever imagine? Did you ever think anybody involved in this whether it's coaches shoe company, then whenever imagine that something like this would be anything more than an NC double a violation as opposed to ending up in the southern district of New York is a federal crime that what's mind blowing? Right. A question. I read right, mind Lord. And I guess what we talked about maybe a year ago month after press conference when they were these all this kind of I remember, the consensus was maybe we actually need it to get to this level to hit the reset button because we couldn't by way of force. But it's my blowing, you know. And it doesn't seem like again with the day of sun. The comments of the prosecutors and back to their press carpets like coming after us. And you know, what let's go. Let's do it. And let's let's see if we can get it all out and try and reset this thing and and had a little better. Hey, my think that we're talking about this earlier, I say one this whole shoe company thing this this process starts like an eighth grade. You wanna play for my worst? Sponsored you get a bag to pair of shoes in ninth grade. If you really good, you know, what we're going to travel your parents tune event, you know, by the juniors and seniors, you know, basically, their parents that are pimping their own kids to get the best deal. It starts that early. And then on the other side, you got you got to shoe companies the shoe companies pay, you know, I don't know what nothing gets paid by Under Armour. But I know that that the word for Kansas was one hundred ninety one million dollars or something with the divas. They're almost partners the shoe companies. You know, the way things stand right now in this moment of time, they're almost partners. And and as partners, don't you think that? No-one put put a stop size up saying don't help me with that kid just like USA basketball sponsored by by Nike. So they go to these regime camps. They're partnered with Nike too. There there. I agree. It's a really tricky relationship. I eight we were back. We just started deal with Under Armour, and we were actually Cleveland for the regional final fifteen and when my sister. And I and I say well, Maryland horse. I mean, I was trained think you know, under ever. Gonna help it wasn't specifically saying a hundred twenty five thousand dollars, but but me moral support. Now, we're gonna recruit in the grassroots system. You know, we all. So it is a tricky tricky relationship and argue actually, you know, forget the equipment with under armor is is it's an unbelievable number, you know, behind UCLA's. It's by the biggest one out there right now. And and you know, so that does make it difficult. I mean, I know that when shoe company deals were Alexei a payroll companies with certain. They stay with a certain apparel company because the coaches said we can't change because I've got recruited. In this particular want. So we we can't take more money from whatever we gotta stay the course because we back favorite. There's another example of what you're saying so complicated relationship. Hey couples things about your team. I number one I traveled with him. I think censure note, man, what what great news. I think sometimes coaches, you know, we all hear about the bad things. But I'm I'm sitting in the middle. And none of those kids knew me, I'm just sitting there, and they were just freaking awesome, Mike. That's great. I appreciate you re Panetta, you know. You know, whatever reasons I love coach air, Danny at I everybody's got great kids. But I can't really in young man here with expert or paint here. All. Show and their day. I mean, hell they were pick knife. But they stole a show. You know, everybody their personalities. On their way, talk to and here, right? After taking over best all of us. For a little younger. They command. Expect they work. They say here there been no it's been his refreshing to be around them every day. Yeah. But reds Pflueger. He rolled in with the fanny pack. If so Hollywood predictable at and he also it right here. Good. It was the Charlotte. Excellent study. In fact, that that was absolutely hilarious. But let let's get you your team luck your bonds Costa lists your Matt Farah lists two guys that were kind of mainstays, and you know, guys that you kinda played through. But you said interesting, but you got some guys that are banged up. Prentice ob-, obviously banged up. You know with some injury issues as freshmen terrific point guard, and he got deejay Harvey where are those guys right now in terms of their recovery and their ability to to be ready to play once season starts. Well, I'm sorry because they're ever Derek about train. Yelled at cost and the senior high school, and and we started right? I mean could start out with the premise. That's happening spare pair. Playmaker. Ball. Hayward maker Harvey's been back a week and has shown L affects the micro fracture things to transit the right way. And he's gonna play a lot of it. So. Guys during the foreign for those guys are two of our four or five best players, but they are back. They're healthy, you know, over kind of set the tone for us, and it's a good place to start because those guys within a rail and had been in and leading. And and then you rotate. You know, a little bit of some unknown guys. They're talented guys that there, and we just have to and, but it's a in our young guys got really skill that, they they're ready to go. They don't we. Away from hoping we can get back into the flow that and nine four here last year. Offense was hard for us at times with with the bodies that were down week to week. But were you know? Hub and Harvey are back and they'll y. Sunday. And I'm excited about that. As Dan Goodwin doing. Doing very well. You the game. You know, he's, you know, he's got a stroke. But he's also can put it on the four amazing how he rebounds from his physician. I look at her stash after sixteen practices, and he hands on stuff. He's also got he's got this about if there's an air in a tough about of being part of things. He's ready to play. Depression. You've got a bunch of freshmen guy Neethling ski. I mean, like he's about six eleven hundred ninety pounds. It seems like but like every time he shoots it. You think it's going in like a guy like that? You've had six you've always had a guy like that. How ready see to to come and compete at this level and help you win the ACC here. And you know, you you remember it what we've got about fifteen on here. That's why the former was so important, and he has had a very good cover. Anyways. Very good in HAMAs. And you're right. He stretches we've had a number of guys like that. He stretches it for that physician. It keeps her spacing keeps off for open. So our Lawrence can get into the lane. The right now, he is a very good. And he was going to have a role in the chance of actually to start for us in my opinion. He might how do you at Notre Dame scheduling has become such a thing. Now is Notre Dame one of those schools where you can go pay somebody sixty seventy thousand dollars to come in. How do you go about it? We we have some by gay here offers eighty five. Some people are paying, you know, six fifty for per guaranteed games. When you're you're fine names. We'll buy, you know, six seven eight eight no, guaranteed games. We get in there. And then we try and have power games of the nonleague. You know, that's kind of the philosophy. We stayed with even then we move floor in exchange white the big ten this year. We're going to twenty league games. So. It makes your lake situation to the point where you know, don't break the spirit of your team in the non league because we got twenty league games now. And there's plenty of power. But one thing about our league is there's always going to twenty league games, even more. So there's always power where he have checks to get raised the main win, and, you know, be overboard and be over to be a discussion on selection Sunday. And so it just trying to Fallon, you know, enough. Good nonleague stuff to get you ready, but not getting crazy about it. Because of a weekly playing and then pointy league games coming next year. Next year. The ACC is going to open the season before three night of play which I think is like November five six and seven we are going to pour. The ACC point. There's going to be seven game. We're gonna come out of gate with elite game right out of the gate, and then we ever consumed league date. So obviously training is good because we're launching the ACC at work at August in those factors in it. But we're playing a league game right out of the gate, which was an interesting discussion have years ago when our league meetings with the coach did you like that? Do you not like that? Go ahead. I I think I think deigning I think it's Dan in hurry to take the best. We should play right out of the gate. Rex point. It's you know, we don't have an opening day in college basketball for you know, when we play, and we got some term it here. But then there's football championship. And our feeling was we had to find bait for two Morley age anyway that was and I agree with their like right out of the gate, and and I know world road. So I'm about coping yesterday, by the way that Wednesday over you're going yet. Well, we go for let's go I don't think it's going to every year that I thought that fear. You know, let's let's do it. Let's give it a shot again in t- dukes not on the road. Well, they're playing in because the only one not because they'll be the champion. Remember that day? Valby out of that. But the other fourteen teams will play nice. Hey, coats, one other thing before anybody recruit your name, buy from Android. We got EBay coming from the Catholics and our. Hearing goading cousin. He's got to here and go to have a hearing, you know, they would have had more children. You know, gosh was he good for stirs. Nobody right now or no one from the region of the list right now you like, Danny. I never met a guy from the region. It's not a tough guy. I like is from the region you're talking to one that is not top. So I appreciate. I appreciate you saying that these squared for where you came from an tough, you were all right. That was back in the day is Notre Dame football back. I mean, you're that America needs to know from you because I know you are an expert on today football who sure the happy coach. And then you got a little grumpy football coach I've seen it on. Will. We are back baby. We are little real deal and our route to the playoffs. You know is kind of right there forest, and we got to go out to San Diego and deal with navy on Saturday night, which is always like going to and don't be tough. We are. We are playing. You know, I I look at us that we have I look at our body, especially the side, and you heard we were recruiting well now, you can see we really recruited. Well, the last couple of years we have on the fan bodies. And obviously the quarterback change with the kids book coming in. He's give it a shot in the arm. So it's it's therefore so people are excited around here. That's awesome. Mike, we appreciate you coming on notice. This kind of a crazy time of the year with the start of the season. Everything's going on the FBI and kind of the microscope college basketball's under. But you're the best man. No one's way. We'll get on with his buddy. Thanks again. For coming to my bed setback came out to our coaches first cancer fan, and I'll have to get on with Dan before the crossroads like, we always do the best. Thanks, Mike guy fell. And I'd like to share little interview I had with my man, Chris tola with the legendary hall of fame coach ROY Williams that will also air on Sirius XM ESPN U radio crispy tola Seth Greenberg. Now joined by the head coach of the North Carolina. Tar heels ROY Williams coach do you still get excited? This time of year for media day. Don't care. Start. Trying to get a chance. That's right. No for the store to seize started practice where you really get excited. I believe we're not do the games come in. Oh, yeah. We're gonna play some games now. But I really get excited to start the season. Jud Heathcote one time said the games in blank illicit. But I do get excited to store the season. Yes. Coaches to say Lee league meetings. Let's get rid of media day and spring meetings. Too far off new truth. Only one hundred percent. Tried to do the Commissioner. Point guards and lockdown defenders or like security bikers coaches, you lost a terrific leader. Joel berry of us to great energy guy that in THEO Pinson, they could defend multiple positions. How different is your practice now and your team now just because you lost that much experience? We've got some freshmen who are gifted any. Maybe maybe some ways more gifted than Jolan the'll were. But boy, they don't have the energy everyday the enthusiasm of the experience that you're talking about. Joel berry was a tremendous leader just by his action. I mean, he would get mad if he lost a drill. And so I think we don't have that yet. The young kids are gifted, but they don't have that in for us. We've gotta get Cam Johnson. Kenny Williams, Luke maye to step up and be even more vocal more energetic. More enthusiastic about the leadership part because Joel would say anything in THEO said everything. So we really had something really good there. When you go through your catalog of of the great players, you've coached in your career. I'm curious where where Luke maye fits in with which is the same. When you think about Luke maye? What does he represent not just for your team this year, but historically for you say said many times west Miller, it's a co two UNC greens burn got almost one hundred percent out of his ability got his potential almost as as well as you could ever expect anybody to Seth did it himself. You have guys boy they could have done a little bit more. They could have done a little bit more Luke maze. Almost got there as well. That doesn't mean he can't get better. But my gosh, what he's been able to compass so far you have to feel very good about that. Oh, yeah. But this your senior, I expect more at it. And that's the thing with Luke because he's very bright, very intelligent youngster business school graduates going to be easy for me second semester. He's gotta take piano or. Something. I don't know what it is. But he'll be finished it to middle of the year of. So he's just a that great individual. But every time I think about and I do go back say boy is he getting as much as he can in east coming close to getting as much as he can in here. I am saying I gotta have more out of this year. You've got three freshmen as I watch practice yesterday that kinda just jump out at you. Kobe wide, obviously, the little shop lack those three guys you watch those guys and you say one they're kind of Carolina players, you you look at Kobe and his ability to push his speed and the Sears athleticism. Those three guys are gonna have to step up and play significant minutes. You haven't had to do that really in the last four or five years. How different is it? Getting this young group to up to speed with the schedule you play the expectation yet, you know, go back to Joel berry in THEO Pinson, Justin Jackson their freshman year. We had to get them to come in play. But we haven't had it since then we're freshman had to come in and do this last year freshman head to play in the big spot. But most of the time we only had one of those guys on the court at a time. But these three guys I think they are gifted enough. I think their coach -able enough talented enough. They have enough understanding the game. And the other part is they have to have all this because we're going to play them. And I think that they their ability in their enthusiasm where they've worked requires you to play them too. But you also have to understand their fresh when you're gonna live through some tough times with them. Yeah. I mean, it's you don't particularly to that point guard position. As you go about determining who is most effective for you. What are you looking for out of your point guard so much? I think we ask a point guard probably do more than almost any anything. They call our defense that caller offense. And I very seldom stand up and call the play very seldom stand up and call defense in the point guard does that every. Possession. It's strange because we've had a lot of guys go back to the Donald Jordan net. Kansas John von Kansas. When you're three years started afresh when point guard. I started Jeff Boashan, and I started Kirk Hinrich and INA started air miles in a year that I started air miles played all three of. So we played three yards in went to the final four. And then to think it was but. Tiles? Did it Bobby Frazier? Did it Marcus pays did it halfway? I mean, excuse me, kindle Marshall did halfway through his freshman year more because page did it. So it's hard. They've gotta think the game and still play. You know, everybody says don't think just play. I don't think you can do that. You gotta use your brain. And so we spend a lot of time on the what we feel important things mentally in the game with those freshmen, and it's bigger just for them middle than it is playing, but I do try to put them in a situation where when they play they have the ability to do that. And we give them things that take NBC successful at there's a little bit of a dark cloud over our game. Now, something that we all really love. And appreciate when I say just college basketball FBI investigation. What's the first thing as a lifer guy that is so invested in the game? What's the first thing that goes through your mind when I was so I said, oh my gosh. That's exactly what might say. Oh my gosh. And then you get more information and more information. But Seth I'm one of those guys I think glasses half full. I think the game is in good shape. Do we have problems? Yes. No question. But when the original thing came out, there were four coaches, we have three hundred fifty one division one schools and each one of those schools has four coats. You're talking about fourteen hundred fifteen hundred people if any segment is society had that they'd be thrilled to have that. But ours is such a major focus issue of college athletics. Men's basketball. We don't that percentage. We don't want. What's happened? And it's it's bad. But I do believe that the college game is healthy nineteen o six. I think is when the NCW was formed, and it was foreign because there was some bad things going on in football between university of Chicago university of Illinois. So we've had problems all the time. But that doesn't mean our game is a problem that doesn't mean. It's ready to throw it in the trash can. But they're scary issues or things that we don't want to deal with, but we have to deal with and hopefully some good things will come from this. The NBA's talking about starting this G league for a leap players coming into into college into the potentially the NBA high school seniors pay him a hundred twenty five thousand dollars for one year. And that way, it's kind of a way to kind of get around the one and done rule when when you heard the NBA talking like this what kind of impact you think will have on our game. Well, the second part of question what kind of impact it'll have. I have no idea. I think we'll have to wait and see my first thought was my gosh, they're making again rules for their game. And it's what they should do. And the tough thing is we have to react to that. But those rules for them for them. I'm sitting back in and thinking about the practicality of it. Okay. If they say twelve guys. Okay. What about number thirteen, you know, it's like when you were coaching. I'm still coach into and you still looking at you're still involved. We have all these ratings locate you number twenty one or you wanna give me number twenty two. You know, how do you do that? I mean, the practicaly. Not of it is it's going to be interesting. And I don't think we can make in judgment to we see it. There are some kids out there that just would like to take that under twenty five thousand over going to call. That's fine. I really don't have any problem with that. But I do think there's also a factor in there that we don't think about enough is we're setting some of those kids up for failure. Have you got an eighteen year old? It's in some smaller town riding the bus two games with guys in that locker room who are ten years older. You know, how freshmen have guys four years we got guys in near their high trying to hang on G league because I'm may get called up or something like that for ten day, contrary house at eighteen year old going to be in the same world with the guy was ten years older than he is. So the practicality of it. I think who have to wait and see I'm a little skeptical of it. But again, they make rules that they think's good for them. And that's that's what they do the health of this league. How how healthy would you say the ACC is from a basketball perspective right now while? I cannot imagine being anymore healthy or healthier. I guess they either wanna guess is proper English. But I can't imagine them. I was in the ACC as an assistant coach when we had seventeens seven. Now, we have fifteen and fifteen great programs fifteen great universities fifteen great athletic departments. And the league is so so strong and everybody says well the ACC overrated, but nobody wants to play that conference schedule that we have either. So I think the league is in great shape. Twenty games you're going to favor of it. It's I sat in a room when it was going to go from sixty eight team everyone voted against that. Yeah. What is shows how much emphasis influence excuse me that the coaches and this one we didn't even vote all of a sudden, I'm told in July. We're going from eighteen to twenty and it's hard for me. Because by says, okay, we got to be partners. I don't know partners with spring something only like that. But what it does to me personally is? Is the last four years our schedule strength schedule by the term communities being right number one number six six number one. So four years in a row top six and I asked when Goss said you'd rather play the fifteenth team in a C or us play Kentucky. Oh, inventory was much read. See you blink inducted as well. We play twenty games, I'm not gonna play as media's those types game. So I don't think they gain is much myself. But, but it's what it is in these going to send me a schedule, and I'll I'll try to coach the schedule as in me. It's are you gonna play those twenty games the ACC big ten challenge Twenty-one really twenty one and say, he's twenty one exempt to get you to twenty five. And then you're gonna have let's face it. You're going to play one or two of those other quote unquote games this year. We started the guns we play guns egg at home. And here we go to their place and we've played Arizona like that. We've played Tennessee. We just finished a series, Tennessee. And they're picked to be one or two in the southeast. You can't play every. A game. Like that you have to you have to my mind play some games that your kids can get some confidence from but our league schedule, so good. And as you say, I'm gonna play some of those team, but we've got to drop some of those I'll give this example. And I hope I'm not going to lie when your day when I was a Kansas. We played Georgia. The first game Hugh Derm would guard you write his guys are going to guard. The nice game we play Bob Knight's Indiana team in Indianapolis, they're going to guard you I had two kids on that team that you're that we're first year player for from. When you're a Jew was Juku and one was a freshman. They did not shoot the ball again till January. Okay. Because goats nerve squad coats nice club. They backed off of it. And you say come on baby, aren't you shoot? And they missed the shot. And then the next one gets tighter. And tighter. I couldn't get those guys to be confiscated all until January. So you need some of those games where you guys can get some confidence in what I do is always play a couple of teams in our state to try to give them some money to. And but yeah, you start became. Play every game. Everybody every game. Can't be Duke Notre Dame. Syracuse for Jinya. You gotta have some of those other games too. But last question when I did want to ask you, you know, the experimented with some rules in the last year. I don't know how closely you follow that. But as we were in between cycles on roles is there anything as you look at the game that you say, you know, we need to tweak that we need to fix that. We need to add that. You know, Chris, it's nothing jumps out at me. I will say that we were in Philadelphia practice to seventy Sixers facility before screaming that we had last weekend. They had a four point line. They're just on the practice court thinking, oh my gosh. My gosh shoots one from here. He better make today. But not anything jumps out at me. I'm guy again. And I like what we have. And you know, have kept the same putter for twenty seven years. So I if I get something I like them, we'll keep it. But there's nothing that jumps out of me. I think we made great strides in trying to take some of the fiscality out of the game and make it more free flowing. I wouldn't bother me if we went to fifteen seconds on the shot clock. We you saw practice yesterday. You know? So, but I like what we have. He said the same putter. But I'll tell you what he's got that driver. Droppers not to say. Drivers twenty five models. Well, he could use that putter. Putter for backwards saying arriver knows twenty five drivers enlists twenty. I kept for low the regional. And I kept for long time. That's terrific. Coach. Thank you. Thank you. These square like to thank final four Mike Bray for joining us today, and how about our sponsors hypocrite, you know, if things don't go, well, we can always go to ZipRecruiter. And we've got a New Year's edition of today's podcast and onto this podcast. We're going to talk a little bit about an pay our respects to Tyler Trent that a young man that has impacted so many and done it in a way in such a graceful way as he was fighting for his life yet impacting others in the future. We'll talk about UCLA basketball and their decision to move on from the Steve Alford era. We'll talk about some teams we probably haven't talked enough about maybe like the Saint John's or the Virginia text of the world. What's going on with the Pac twelve so a lot to cover today? These squared today is a very difficult day for you. Tyler Trent was a person that you really developed a very strong relationship with friendship with shared a lot of memorable moments. So. So I'm going to turn this thing over to you. And just what did Tyler Trent really mean to you. Seth it's it's odd because I've never seen. Anybody like him, you know, in a world where we listen to certain people, and they have influenced this dude found a way without even really trying to impact. I listen, I told his mother Texas mother last night and entire country. Maybe a world. I don't know. But he never complained and Seth I'm telling you my man was a dude. My man is a man's man. My man so much pain so much discomfort so much disappointment. I mean think about here's a young kid dying to be a sports writer die. And all of a sudden, he gets this beats it. And it comes back loses his arm, and then next thing, you know, you know, he's he's he's in a wheelchair. And he's bedridden never complained. You know, one thing that I absolutely loved about him. I went to house to do my radio show. And as you know, and and you know, what I do. I mean every once in a while you'll slip in a damn. A hell or whatever word, right? And we I was talking to we were all laughing. I must have said damn, and he goes coach in my house. We don't swear. And I love that. Right. I go. You darn right? And he was just he was a dude, man. He was a man's man. Dude. A a guys, you know, you set off air you never saw him without a smile on his face. He privately Seth went through hell. And so part of me is lie. And I don't even know the how I don't even know a third I don't even know a tenth of what he went through. But part of me is like if anybody was prepared for whatever's next, and you know, after death that kid that man is prepared and in certain ways, you know, we're we're I'm sad. But in certain ways, I'm I'm happy for him. Because he was is the most comfortable person I've ever met with what's next. And man what you think about it. Amazing. And I'll stop you. But amazing the impact that he ended up having just because he maintained a positive approach a smile on his face. An energy that people could feel even though he couldn't move. Amazing what you can do in life with a certain attitude and rest in peace, my friend. Yeah. You know to me. I didn't know Tyler Trent. I followed it closely, obviously, actually started when you you know, you start to have him involved in the show and everything and it was moving to me because I watched my dad died of cancer. And I watched my dad weather way. Now, my dad had had a good life. But I understood the pain I understood the discomfort. I understood everything get I'd never from as an outsider. I didn't know how like you do or or SAP does or whoa JR. But I never saw him. Without a smile without a kind word without an optimistic attitude, and you know, thinking about everything that he was going through in and what on a C the life that he would have loved to live yet through his energy through his passion for living in the moment. The number lives he'll impact and the money that is being raised in his honor. And hopefully lives that'll be impact moving forward. You know, comfortable in your own skin is a saying, but comfortable in caring for others while you're putting on a brave face yet to me was just it was it was invigorating in. And you know, I woke up this morning. And I and I saw it. And I just said, you know, here's a guy. I don't even know, and I was deeply moved by his passing. And I would think I'm not alone. No. I mean, really weird who who we gravitate to and last thing in a we'll get on the basketball. You know, I'm not sure the year. I saw this the other day, and this is how important researches and money is I I saw this the other day, and it may have been a long time ago. I don't know. But but leukemia was at about a six percents arrival rate X number of years ago now because of what we've done it's at ninety four percents arrival rate and Tyler decided that okay now what wait a second. I have notoriety. Holy cow. I'm gonna put this to use. And. We're going to raise some money, and there's endowments at Purdue, and there's an dommage setup actually at Purdue and t shirts and stuff like that. So just a very aware kid in in a very special kid, and, you know, personally for me, I think is mom and dad for raising such a kid, and I thank them for sharing him with all of us, his mom and dad agreeing obviously, sad, obviously. I mean, it's their son no matter whether you knew it was coming or you didn't know was coming. It's still your boy, you know, your little boy. And it's. Yes. Awareness to pediatric cancer. My my my daughter lost her nephew at a very young age the amount of money that is not being spent for pediatric cancer research. It's just not enough to do. It's something that hopefully, you know, now, we'll be people much more aware of. So our thoughts and prayers to tower, Trenton and his family, and it's a sad day. But a lot of ways here's a guy that made our all our lives a little bit better. Yeah. During this time on earth. Now, another dear friend of yours of Steve Alford. Had had a interesting weekend. He had a good week. Hey, get out. And it, you know, it is funny. I mean, like, here's the thing. I mean coaching is a great profession. And and it's a terrible business is what it comes down to. And you know, when you think about why we all got regionally into coaching. It wasn't the become millionaires was the coach on TV. It was because we love the game. We fell in love with the game. And we got lost in a game. And we wanted to continue to share that love and passion for the game with others, and then it became a multimillion dollar business. And a lot of, you know, did very well because of the profession that we we we chose. But not that wasn't the reason we chose it. UCLA's tough place to eat their own. Now. Look, I mean, you can't lose to liberty. And you can't list Belmont. And that's just that's just the way it is. I'm not a big believer in letting coaches go before the end of the season. I think you can come to some type of agreement. Let people finish it out. Maybe it's the best for Steve. But I as you, and I both know because we both been let go in that moment in time. It's extremely difficult. But let me ask you this moving forward. Right because we can say what you want like I have a feeling beggar aero. He's he's fired seven coaches in football and basketball in like four sixteen years. So I can eat one or two things wrong, either the infrastructure. The support of these coaches is incorrect or he's hiring around coaches. So eventually the administration has got to be held accountable as much as sometimes the coaches are held accountable. And then look I mean Steve Alford headed team this year tire Campbell the point guard who probably would have made his team better and made this team. Go kind of like with. Tom green v had OG on nobody in and some others that got hurt that impacts your success, but moving forward, what type of guy wins it UCLA. I'll give you an I believe this. And I kind of made a joke on Twitter. But I think if I'm Dan Guerrero, and you said it to somebody bigger than the program I'd go. Hi, Rick Pitino and I go. Hi. And right now, I wouldn't even mess around. I wouldn't. I'd I'd hire Patino. Let's be honest. Seth. You're UCLA and Memphis. We talked about Memphis last week. And we got a little pub off the Memphis thing to which I like it is great as pocket. This isn't about anything other than winning. I mean, let's be honest. I it isn't. So who's the best winter out there? Rick Pitino d have to deal with NCWA stuff. Probably not in the whole scope of things. And if you do you do, but to me, I am Rick Pitino is sitting in that seat by Saturday in my world, if I'm Dan Seth we can say, whatever anybody wants to say, but you see LA cares about one thing and that is winning period. I look I said it as soon as the job open. I said you got to hire someone that's bigger than the program that can basically say, you know, what I don't wanna hear you know, the UCLA's reputation for eating their own. Forget about it. I'm not even deal. I'm bigger than right? Kentucky. He's bigger than all the static. Exactly. And that I'm just saying, I'm I'm I'm running this team, by the way players if you like me or don't like me like, you know, the big quotas. Oh, well, the players hated him. The first all I love I love to know who does sources at a players hated him. Well, you know, what this a lot of times that players don't like their head coach because either playing time or how things are going, and you know, what the players hated. But the players had to go beat liberty and the players had to go beat Belmont. And that had nothing to do with the coach. And so I mean, but I think I agree. I it's got to be someone that is going to live it the job someone that's bigger than the program to someone to it. When people try to interfere in the static comes in. He's above the static. And that he he's he's a person that when he walks in the room, all of a sudden, people take notice, and I said to Rick Pitino John Calipari. Those two guys are built for UCLA and the pressure. Of UCLA, and whether they can do that or are willing to do that who knows. But to me, that's the type of person that need to hire. Now, Billy Donovan could be conversation. I don't see Billy Donovan leaving Oklahoma City do there. And then the other thing is that they've got to hire someone that. And I don't know if this makes sense, you're not it says, this is how we're running the program. Right. We're chartering everywhere. Like, I I read an article the other day go, you know, we charter some legs it UCLA some legs. They don't try to some legs in Kentucky, Duke, and Kansas and North Carolina. They charter that's just the way it is. That's the way they conduct their business. They build facilities. They've got a new practice facility UCLA thinks only one year old they build places for the athletes to live. They have everything you mainly possible to give that player the best experience. And you know, it's not a debate. We need X Y Z. If you don't wanna do it. I'll go raise the. Money like Ripa Tino. He went and raised the money for that logic at Louisville. I just think it's got to be someone. That's so much bigger than the program that has a persona that walks in the room that that is dynamic and and can sell in LA because let's face it. You know, Steve said this to media day. It was interesting. You said, you know, there were times what does that Mexico? We were struggling, but those fifteen thousand people in the stands will us to win unless it's an event unless it's on the social calendar unless it's the thing to do. That's not happening in in California. So you'd better hire a guy that people are going to want wanna come and see besides just guys on a court and speaking of the guys in I I'd fire all these these recruiting gurus. Up telling you, I went and watched UCLA, and I thought this whoever said anybody on that team is a great player as full of crap. I mean, look in my world UCLA if this I'm watching him, and they got a bunch of guys that look like Bambi, you know, the big kid looks like Bayan. Yeah. And if they stayed together they might be national champs in four years, but nobody stays together because the wolves kid thinks he's an MBA guy. I mean, look to me I've you fire the coats. I'm going I which one are you idiot. Rancor guys rank these guys is great. Because ain't great. I mean, they're not there and. Yeah. Yeah. And you know. But that's being facetious. But to me, it's a no brainer. I mean, and then somebody says well, who's the second guy? Maybe Bobby Hurley is a kind of guy that can handle. I have no idea. All I know is this is you said, Dan Guerrero, all these guys become legendary athletic directors, like Dan Guerrero on every committee to guide Oklahoma's on every committee who hired Sampson and fired. I mean, honest to God, it's amazing to me these guys somehow some way survive all these bad decisions. I guess if they're bad decisions. But it's to me it's got to be Patino. I I don't think Fred hardware. Let me throw this out to you. Why would you want the job? If you're if you're a guy that unless you just desperately want a job, but if you're being paid millions not to coach from the bulls, or Rick Pitino seeming talking to couple of people, you know, he's kind of the Walking Dead all this stuff chance to rejuvenate. So I guess he would want it. But I mean, they don't shy. It's a cra-. I it's it's a well though. If you say, I gave it a guy with cloud. You need a guy with classes like here's the thing. Here's my here. Here's what we have to. Do. You want me to coach your team? Just what we're this this. Here's my checklist. Here's my here's much these things we have to do these things have to be in the contract now to trolling the schedule. I work. We're chartering everywhere we need to go. I've got this many hours on a private plane to recruit, and they need Sam Gilbert's grants grandson. That's Sam Gilbert grandson. Let's get back to our roots baby. And let's get going here. Let me ask you this people say well, get Tony Bennett. Why would Tony Bennett Goethe like here? Like, why would Tony Bennett go to UCLA because he's going to recruit the same guys at Virginia that Kurtz at UCLA? I don't think that personally the only reason he would go there. The only reason you'd go there. If you look at it, and you said, hey, I want to live in LA, and I think that's an easier league. And the combination of the weather and what I mean, I think Marshall what about Gregg Marshall. I've I'm Gregg Marshall, I'm getting the hell out of Wichita state as fast as I came. There because I'm a poster child for staying in one place too long. So if I'm Gregg Marshall, I had a great run on believable run never to be duplicated run. If UCLA calls me I'm gonna fake like I'm not going. But I'm there tomorrow that you know, here's an interesting name. Kevin keats. Kevin key be great hired dudes coaches with a smile, he's gonna play exciting style. He's he's wins. And he's unbelievable people. I don't think there's any chance. He would do it. Either is I don't think he knows he's not a west coast guy. But if I'm Kevin Keats, the one thing that I would look at is this. I don't care. How good you are. You are third. That's true. You're not second here. Third, and you may be fourth. I mean, I'm I'm saying third in your own little area, but he had Virginia in there. You know, it's almost like being the football coach at Indiana. I mean, you're on a side with everybody and their mother Michigan Ohio state by you know, your third fourth. That's the only reason Seth but Kevin Keats. I look I used to always say they're two guys. I would hire no matter what is going back five six years. And that's Brad Stevens and shock smart. Now, both them seem have jobs where they're going to be for a while. If I'm an AD Kevin Keats is one or one A whatever he wants. He's got a great presence about believe always is believable with people. I'd high. I'd hire I'd hire dockage and Greenberg. And I'm I'm gonna tell you right now, we're not gonna do anything that gets us in federal trouble. But I'm not saying that we might not have you know, some guy with one little NC. Double A were mad at you. Badges? Come see us or mad at. I'll tell you the story guy came to see me when I left West Virginia true story. It's AA investigate. This. The true story came sat down wanted to talk. I said look I made the decision to leave West Virginia. I'm not ratting anybody out. That's my decision. You know? And by the end of it. He wanted a job on my staff. My daughter works here in bullying. He ended up on central Michigan staff when they went to the NC double A tournament. That's by the way, I heard you you were thinking of taking a West Virginia football job for we've only a day or two. Dana albertson's out. I I figured this. Contact me fellas I'll do it in the interim for a couple of days. I gotta get the help back radio. American. Aren't we come back? We're gonna talk a little pack twelve what's wrong with the Pac twelve bacon have a whole bunch of coaching openings in that conference and that conference, and then let's just talk about some surprise teams around the country. So when we come back, Dan, and I will solve the world's problems in the Pac twelve and more. Squared user Pac twelve all, right. Yeah. We talk about UCLA situation. But just a pack twelve in general, I ask you a question what Pac twelve coach kind of really just get you excited. None. I guess you know, if Shawn Miller keeps his job and everything goes moving forward. I you know, it's been interesting to me Seth about the Pac twelve alert Christo act. I thought yeah, he could really coach Utah's. You know, always been pretty good. And man, they're sitting here. Six and six can't win on the road. You know, use USC seems to me tell me explain this to me. All right USC every year seems to be the same team to me. They're supposed to be great athletes. This is supposed to be the year. Something stupid happens off the court. Nothing happens on the court. Is that accurate or is that inaccurate? Yeah. I'm not sure they have any substance. Yeah. I think they want to be a team that's going to run up and down, and, you know, be dunk city. But they don't really you know, that sounds good in a maybe a one game tournament. And but can they get checks? Can they look, hey, they're they're still under? I guess some type of form of investigation. They lost her assistant coach who today, by the way. We'll be we'll play. Lied. Take a plea agreement. Tony bland and apparently just get probation. Right. And but I mean, so you know, they they've dealt with that. Now, they've got a ridiculous recruiting class coming in every day. It's a ridiculous. You know? But I some reason you know, you can have pieces, but you that doesn't mean you have a team. And I think there's there's an art of putting together a team and not just getting old and staying all but haven't placed owners haven't played makers haven't shopped makers having guys that trust each other have guys that play for each other have guys that, you know, don't play with this ridiculous ego. Like they had the semi met to and and boat. Right. I'm not sure those they're good players do talented players to probably play somewhere, you know, after in the NBA. But can you win and college with here's what I would. If I was looking at the Pac twelve I'd say, okay. Arizona states had a big win. Okay. And then they lost the principal. Roska foul play. But it's a bad loss to just be can't no admits admits Henderson can really coach. He was a really nice pie school play went to Princeton and was a part of other good teams. But here's a team. I'm looking at Seth. I'm looking at Washington they have three law excuse me, four losses and beaten anyone good. No. But but they've only lost a good teams though. And I I shouldn't say the Minnesota's necessarily good team talented team. But they've lost Auburn. They've lost a Minnesota. They've lost a Gonzaga very close to point game lost Virginia Tech and to your point. So I I look at them. And I say, well, you know, what they beat a western Kentucky team in the opener. Which is what it was. Yeah. Why? Why was ever scheduled? That's another football. It was a football deal. And it's out ended up and now you've got quality greens gonna go there. And anyway, I that would be a team. But that, but that's what we're looking at in the Pac twelve eighteen that is quote, unquote, good. But they haven't beaten anybody you. I mean, I don't I I didn't love Oregon when I've seen them. There's nothing about Oregon that I'm digging. You know, here's the thing with article first of all they're beaten up a little bit. Obviously wouldn't get out all balls up on it might not played a, you know. And here's my thing. It's almost like Moses Brown. I mean like you get big skinny dudes. All right in college. Any college big skinny dudes most times don't win. Whether it's scouring the CIA. I don't care. You can go right down the list. They're not ready to win in that led to play hard enough. They can't play long enough. Yeah. They can do some freaky things and they can block some shots. They they struggled played against six six guys that put a body on them and beat them up. That you're a defensive dilemma when have to guard out on the floor. They wanna play way from the basket because every once playboy from the basket. So that makes them just basically six six guy. That's a seven foot guy playing as a six six time, basically. So I mean, it's you know, it's a situation Oregon, I don't like their chemistry and as good as the patriot kid is. And he's a pretty good connector. I don't like I do I do like washing. They were my sleeper pick. I had to pick a sleeper pick. I they were my sleeper pick. I think that you know, you know, well kid is Dell Noelle's interesting wings score. They've got seniors upper-class guys, which we're gonna talk about teams with upper class guys that, you know, whether it's crisper whether it Stibal, whether it's you know, we're Dickerson style of plays. Good, especially if you're playing quick turnaround games. So, you know, I think they're good. And they they have great home court in league play. Not a great home court. Right. No. And that and that's the thing. A great home other near Zona. That's a good. That's a good question. I mean, like what you just said about offered, you know, like where they picked us up to Indiana seventeen thousand show up on Sunday against Cleveland state. Who's got that? Yeah. I mean, that's the thing. It's a lack of ownership. I mean, they could be crazy turnover net conference. I mean, they I mean you look at that they could be five coaching openings in that conference. So let me let me ask you about AirAsia state. Arizona state. You you mentioned that we mentioned it, you know, the big win and a huge laws to at home too. And that might be a game where maybe the fans didn't show up. I'm sure they didn't for Princeton. How good is there is state. I think they're good. I think they're different than last year. I thought there better defensively not as good offensively. I think that people starting to figure out how to guard Lukens Dora's driver and wall went up on him a little bit in that fouling and putting them on who's going to want about seven times a game. I think they're good. I think they're an emotional team of physical defensive team. I think teams really good. I actually think they're too deep. I'm a big believer with kids. I mean like you can't keep tend to Leonard. How with Joel gotta keep tend to Abby. And develop you know. And again, how good can Florida stay be. That's another conversation. But I think they're good. They're not great because the win. They had against Kansas Kansas without a DOE Kazuyuki is a six seven hundred thirty. I'm sorry healed for two freshman guards. They play through Deedrick Lawson. They're young developing team. Just okay. I mean without without the oaken. Oh, Doke comes back and all of a sudden shots become easier. And he so huge. You gotta turn your head off the ball, which gets guys open shots and driving lane. So I mean, it was a good win. It was a great win and a great atmosphere. But. I think it's okay. Okay. Now good enough to beat Nevada. All right. So let me ask you this quest to bid league at the most. Maybe why? Every yes every year. I hear the USC great recruiting class Arizona, great recruiting class UCLA top five recruiting class. Why why aren't they any good? I mean, are they hiring coaches? I don't know. I mean, Dana Altman's a heck of a coach in heck of a coke. I mean, he's he he's a really really really, Sean one everywhere. He's been Eric asto yak. Really? He's one eight that Ted boils one the cat boils are very good. Yeah. Coach against now. Here's the thing. You know, some of those guys aren't concrete. Well, they'd better start. Tap wall's going gonna run a clean program. He's just the way it is. You know, that's just the reality. Saying that everyone does. But I'm just saying that I mean, you know, they're going to get the guys they get I think, you know, west coast. You know, maybe, you know, California basketball is it it's not over it. Because I'd say California does put out good players. I think that that you've gotta have a mix. I think that's too many time geographic footprint is so important. You gotta be able to do footprint. That's why I think there's a chance that I Billy Donovan would would go to a UCLA. Because like when when he was a Florida, even though he went to national championships even won two national championships. He had crude against Kentucky. He wasn't gonna win that battle in his geographic footprint if you're at UCLA. Let me throw a name as battle. Let me throw name out. Right. Would you hire? He's always told me he's dying to coats at a basketball school that had football. Would you talk to if you were Dan Guerrero, Thad Matta? He's a great coach it's going to do with integrity. I don't know if he's the personality that can deal with you can deal with it. He's not going to enhance it. Like, he's not going to be Patino. You know being Dean Martin, you know, what I mean? Vedeno would be it'd be out to a Dean Martin. Right. As a great coach. Yes. I am a healthy Thad Matta invigorated that body. He's also very good recurred because he's so believable. Yes. I think he could win at UCLA. I I would not go into the mid west. I would go guy that can really coach with a big enough personality and a big enough persona that he can basically tell all this static. Go blank yourself. This is the way we're doing it. Stay out of my way, come see me at the end of the season. We'll go to the phone force. And that's not what you need. Or, you know. I don't know. I mean, so let's put it at the Pac twelve I think is a league in transition, their TV contracts and mess with the direct TV stuff, or whatever, you know, what's going on with that the league's amass in. That's not a reason why they're not winning because they're having a level playing field because of the way they conduct business with the chartering stuff, which is. All right. Let me let me ask you this. Seth greenberg's five coaches. He would talk to at UCLA are three coaches five whatever you want. I would coat top list would be Rick Pitino. Second would be Billy Donovan. Would be Kevin Keats. And he would I don't think he would do it. I might talk to Chris Holtman. Yeah. He's a connector of people even though he's a mid western guy. He's a he's a guy that that. And I'm Jay, right? Jay Wright, Jay, right because you walk in. And you know, now Jay Wright in his next job would be taking on the job is going to be in bad. But I mean, Jay right because Jay Wright, walks in with two national championships presence persona a- vision, and an understanding of you know, he can recruit one dons, and he he can also get old and stale and maybe Mike break. I don't think Mike Bray. You know, because you who get he's going to do his thing. You know, I talked to was that. You'd think I'm nuts or I talked to Rick Pitino person foremost, we'll talk to Steve Kerr second. I would I would, you know, th eventually this thing's going to break up. And he's either, you know, look, let's be honest pop ain't that great coach without Dunkin and Robinson, and all those guys all of a sudden, I would talk to Mike Bray dough. And and I would talk to Kevin Keats. I I would talk to Kevin Keats, and I would talk to Billy Donovan, but I would throw to act as as once from from the upper upper deck right there. Well, I would I would ask him. I mean, look, he's a pack twelve guy. Again, this thing it at the warriors may break everybody assumed member remember back to start the year. Everybody assumed a warriors. We're going to go eighty two. And no, I mean, it was like this is not fair. We've got well. They're struggling a little bit. I mean, not not to the players. Get better. Worse. What's that this cousins? Make it better worse thing in that situation. Probably better. She's got guy that can throw it to ask a little big money. And I don't know that he can affect the personalities on that team. But now you got let's say that. Here's what you and I both know when you are inside of it. You know information before it gets to the public. They may know because Kevin Durant has changed his personality dramatically from when you know, he was coming into the league to where he is right now. They know what he's gonna do. Now. Let's say he leaves. I don't know. I mean, I could leave. Absolutely, I would talk. I would I would re you're using Bob Myers anyway might as well talk to coach. And maybe, but I would I would I would. And I'm trying to think of any other NBA guy that I would talk to maybe you do talk to pop of it, maybe Popovich months. I don't know. But I'm going big here. I'm not messing around. There you go with anything other than the best of the best wouldn't get a sideline interview with Papa. I would love to do and just tell them to kiss my backside. I mean, all that, you know, nasty coach and craft. Stop it tell you I the greatest sideline interview ever the other day with Cal. You asked them to write question. I just seem to coach your state. What's up? Well, it's like when I did that stuff behind the bench people that say, what did you tell you? I mean, like, what am I gonna like Esab tricky question. I love Seidler Puertas that try to s all last night. What are you thinking urban Meyer was interviewed on television? It was a short question, then I radio guide ESPN who the guy was leeann I are watching it. It just happened to keep the camera on him. And this dude just talked for five minutes asking the question. Like, I don't want to hear the radio guy want here. So Cal Peres best. I would hire Calapan out. Talk to Cal pair. Maybe Cal wants to get out and resit maybe he wants to be THEO Epstein, resurrect, Kentucky and. See I that's like my thing is that that would be before Patino that would be the first one I would call. Yeah. Just see if you know if if he feels he's run its course when you call Izzo. Definitely call him. Magic Johnson out there. Boop. Boop. Let me redo my list. I would call Calipari Patino is oh Steve Kerr. And then Billy Donovan. That's what I would do. There's my list ego done done deal. All right, Dan Guerrero. Go get done. All right. A couple of things real quick. I watched Saint John's yesterday. Yes. Under size. These are two teams that Mary and I watched and I watched Virginia Tech yesterday type life. I have these are two teams that Mary I think Virginia Texas, a better version of Saint John's because blacks here, but of blacks, you get some foul trouble. They have no death that front, but Virginia Tech is a really good offensive team. Saint John's on the other hand is Shomari Pons has to be we talked about Carson Edwards. Shomari Pons has to be in the conversation for player to you. Because that dude makes buckets. Player of the year in the country. Well, we're talking about Carson Edwards. Yeah. This dude's on on on a on a on a one loss team that that. Absolutely. That dude looks like a he looks like Isaiah Thomas when he was at Washington and moan when he was good in the NBA. He makes shots he gets in lane. He's tough. He makes plays. I'm gonna do. I don't know what he had yesterday. But they stifled Marcus Howard. They were better defensively than than I thought they'd be there under-sized they got a bunch. You know, guys that started somewhere else, they're older. I don't think Saint John's is. You know the second weekend team. But I'll tell you one thing smart ponds is the real deal. I don't think Virginia Tech is much better. Because blacks, your gives them inside guy. I think this. I think that when I watched Virginia Tech, I see pretty damn good basketball team like, and I I don't have an answer for why just see pretty damn good basketball team. Now. He's really good. And I think that they could they could go as deep as good basketball teams could go depending on a matchup. I think it'll be interesting in the ACC where they end up because ill. Let's be honest. We don't know what's going to happen with North Carolina. Do we is North Carolina State legitimately good. I know villain of Virginia's good. I know. No, don't do is good. But where where does Virginia Tech fit in that four or five I think, so probably probably I let me Harry, very similar to three or five. Closer to five. I think let me too. I I mean, like, I think it's Duke Virginia, I still like Carolina. Yeah. I like airline Carolina. I think that they could be that next one. I mean because I don't think so here's the thing. I don't think the ACC deep is everyone says it is who's no good. Let's go from the attack is not very good. No good not Dame. Right now is not know pit is one a lot of games. I don't I'm not sure that they have no see who they nave a win against Saint Louis, which is a pretty good win. Let's go through wake FARs is not any good you play. If you play those four teams twice in your pretty really good team. There's a chance you're gonna win games. Right. There. Who's really like is Duke by far the best team even with young guys going into tough road games. I'll tell you that on the nineteenth because they they will actually have a home game against Virginia. They've got a road game at Florida state coming up early right agile. That's twelve twelve. That'll be that'll be an interesting if you've got they gave me boy. What's that? You got that game. Nope. I don't I have a bad game somewhere. No. I'm kidding, no bag, I got fairly Dickinson ally. You let me. Let me be honest for a second about what I just said bad game because that's wrong. I'm gonna tell you some college basketball will deliver every freakin night. If you if you are college basketball fan, this is true. And I've said this on Twitter for a year. Every night. There is some game or games where you are on the edge of your seat for the last five minute. I'm talking about Monday through Sunday every freaking night. There's good games in college hoops, and that's not meet being promotional guy. That's me last year. All of a sudden realizing wait a second. There's another could get it. College hoops is Goodman, really good this how about Hartford beaten VCD other day. I'd even mentioned that you know, that that's another BC. People think college basket, but you know, what the average attendances at college basketball. Now, but you're gonna tell me between five and six thousand like so BC, you go in there, if you're Hartford who you playing in front of you know, what I mean, it's that place only Tyson place you're playing for your point on f lower hold ice. Nice. Oh nice. And you're planning friends family, right? F R O friends family. All right. Let me give you another one of teams Nebraska. Ooh. I think that again, I picked him as my dark horse in the big ten. I would have picked Minnesota. But I don't like the guard play Nebraska has a starting group as good as any came into big time. Yes. Or no. I'm gonna say. I'm gonna say Michigan's played so well, I think Michigan's number one should be. I don't know if they're the best team, but they should be the number one team in the country. But to your point about Nebraska, here's what I like about Nebraska sat in and I'm not going to say, you're wrong. They got they got guys that are not only capable of doing a lot of things James Palmer and all that. But they got some experience there to Seth Glenn Watson's been there. I think I played against Glenn Watson, he's been there. So damn long they point guard. I I'm not disagreeing with you at all. Now is it NBA talent doesn't matter to me. But no, probably not. I don't know. I mean, hell you see guys make the NBA that you know, you never thought would. And you see guys not make the NBA that you thought would absolutely make the NBA who knows on that. But they have a bunch of guys that can do a lot of different things, and they have experienced I'll say this though. Here's the thing about Nebraska, and I'm not I'm not saying this doesn't happen to teams, but they lost at Minnesota. And they play tonight against Maryland. Those are very similar games. You know, what I mean by that very much? I I like I like Maryland's team. I don't mind Maryland at all. No. But but you got if you're going to like Michigan is winning one of those two games. Let's put it that way. Right. Maybe both the way they're playing this year. So if Nebraska is going to be real, you know, Michigan state probably wins both of those game. If you're going to be real like Erick curry wasn't playing at Minnesota for Minnesota. You got to win that game. Yeah. Grace mission. Minnesota was real in a little bit. I just I I don't trust Minnesota's guard play. I no, I don't either. But. No, I don't either. But when you get my point you can't like I watched that game Nebraska the crowd. God gone Nebraska got affected by it. Well, that I always said was a difference in modern big ten basketball. Michigan state doesn't let the crowd beat them. They may lose because you hit a bunch of threes, but any letting crowd beach, Bo Weinstein weren't letting the crowd beats Michigan not letting the crowd beach, Nebraska, let the crowd beat them and the senior team and upper-class team shouldn't. And there's the one difference between the the big ten in. Yes. Other conferences every single game on every single campus. Yes isn't event. Yes. Craze you go to Mackey. It's an event you go to north western even now with the new facility. It's an event you go you go to Rutgers and Iraq, and they're bad. It's an event and you gotta play well to win. I mean, where like you can go in the ACC can go the SEC, and they're not going to be events everywhere. It's just wait is. Blurred. Is it event though, are you are you all in both feet in you were at Louisville game. Are you both in on on Kentucky? I'm going to be really both feed in when he Montgomery starts becoming a force. Because I think he's going to be. And if he does that's going to be huge. I'm I was not and I didn't say this. But I was not as all in on Tyler hero after the Bahamas. I'm all in on Tyler hero. Now, not from an offensive perspective. But I thought Tyler hero and PJ Washington. We're phenomenal defense green. We've said it crept up for you agree. We got crushed know. What counts that we've Tyler here more. I think it's actually a good idea because he isn't. A prototypical defender, he's he's kinda read defending people more like he's denying people little bit more. He's you know, making it harder. I got to catch the ball. He's not as much in helping then he uses his length and he gets them deflections. I just think the way he's using defensively. He's been pretty interesting. I think Tyler hero was wild few weeks ago. You know, what I mean like he was trying to get a steal. And the next thing, you know, it's three onto underneath the bucket because he's out at half quarter a four on three whatever it is. But I thought in the game. And you know, you do a game. You got a great seat. You're sitting right there. You can you can see you had a great seat. I mean, you had a camera in your head. You you a camera? Head also want to say there's a video where people saying I'm yelling at the students. I'm not yelling at the students. I'm pointing up to him to try to get him going. So that I could do this thing about how you look I'm getting Dickey on us with with with with the raise the roof. No, they there's a video like dockage is antagonizing the students. I'm like, I was laughing to start the video. And then I'm like, hey, you guys get you know, and trying because I was shown a video of how when you shoot a free throw. So many of us on TV we show what's going on behind in the student section waving their hands and stuff. Well, you really don't see that when you're shooting a free throw because you're looking up, and I want I was showing that and you know, but you guys were flipping me off and stuff which I thought was great. But. Then about uncommon. Oh god. No Michigan state next week eighteen pay love you now look kissing jurors. He combined own. Zone. I are great. I mean, Michigan state Kentucky fans. I mean, you've I mean, you're like you might be like we might send you to Middle East. Southbound I got a ways to go before before. I'm I'm good with the students at Louisville. I'm walking to the game with my wife, and Dan Schulman in this one big dude who flipped me off one hundred times and was screaming at me in the previous game. I did start yelling, you know, really bad things at me. You know, it's amazing. Couldn't remember if the guy was flipping you off the P was. He was. Out of shape, dude with a long hair and a beard, and he was turned around. I o same guy. I think talkies better and it goes back, then we'll finish up on better. Because it's they're they're better because they have a tighter rotation guys are playing with one foot in one foot out. He's letting PJ through his mistakes. I think is a really good thing. Nick Richards is coming along a little bit your guy. Didn't do much in that game a little bit. I mean. Spots. But I I think that you know, he's got a guy that disrupts the game on the ball in Hagen's disrupted again before but he was a risk taken. Now, he's keeping it in front using his quick ends to guard, which I think is important and the ball's moving I think the balls really Kentucky's got the ball moving right now. Last thing sat me you. You said it, and we mentioned him earlier quality grain leaving. Well, okay. He left and good for him or bad for him, depending on how it goes. But that's not bad for Kentucky. Because you said it's shortening the shortening the rotation. And I really thought this. I I really thought that the team played off Hagen's is confidence. He was so confident now he doesn't look over his shoulder. I think it's really good. Yeah. I think they're gonna be good. Well, d- square. Good way to start the the the year. Again, our thoughts to Kyle transfat family. And you know, that guy's gonna be with us for a long time. There's no doubt about it. Wherever you may. I just say so today. Well, I ever stop you for days star. I'm getting ripped like I've decided for the new year, I'm doing ultimate tough mutters. So I'm starting today a stretching working out program that I'm going to be ripped like rent with coal sculpting or without. I did cool school. So that the love handles, it'd be gone that way. But it starts getting a trainer, and I am doing tough waters. Yeah. What then maybe the next time we play golf, and you won't have to walk into the ocean. Because you'll be ripped and you one against you the sun. Son once on the court once on the course, and then you got me I had to go get baptized. Well, I have happy new year, my friend now that Dan dockage is ripped. Thanks for listening and wherever you download your podcast, apple podcasts or ESPN. Please.
