"Hello and welcome to the MM QB NFL podcast I'm Gary gremlin, and I'm Connor rohr. Connor we have worked our way down to the final four here. As the laws of nature and man, demand, we are going to go backwards in time through divisional round weekend. It should be called conference semifinal weekend, but that's okay. And we're going to start this one off with the cowboys forty-niners game that we recently watched. And once again, the cowboys kind of go out with a whimper, especially in the offensive side of the ball in the postseason. Yeah, so I guess my big question is, when you and whatever style points optics, none of that stuff really matters to coaches, it matters more to us, but when you lose the way that you did to the forty-niners last year, where you were unable to get a spike off and you're in the waning moments of that game, how do you put yourself in a situation where you're equally as poor in terms of understanding and interpreting the clock. I feel like reading a room a little bit and then I don't know where you want to slot Gary that final play call in our stack of important things to talk about, but holy Moses was that thing just absolutely ridiculous. We can kind of do it up top here. And again, just like last year, it's unlikely they win the game, even if they manage that final drive correctly. That, of course, ended with the dak Prescott on the quarterback draw, and then they ran out of time before they get next snap off. In this one, we had dull and Schultz. I don't know, man. I don't know if he just forgot the rule about forward progress, which I know some people and look, Greg Olson was astute to point it out, and people pointed out that Greg also was a suit to point out, but also everyone who's watched professional football in the last like three years knows exactly what that role is. It's become, I don't know, is you come like the ten second runoff on a pre snap penalty in the final in the final two minutes there. It's just something everyone knows this one. I don't know how Dalton Schultz didn't know that and kind of just gave up on the play and then obviously one play later I don't know what that is. What are you doing? So do you want to hear my what I think was going to happen? Yeah. All right, so for those of you who didn't see the play, Prescott, it basically a swinging gate sort of thing where you have some of your offensive linemen out wide. And then you have Ezekiel Elliott by himself as the lone offensive lineman and he's snapping the ball backwards. And then what happened in real time was that Zeke snaps the ball in a very wobbly fashion and then just gets plastered by whoever the forty-niners put over the ball and was unable to get up and then dak Prescott just throws like a 6 yard comeback and the receiver gets tackled and the game is over. I think they did not expect Ezekiel Elliott to be covered and I think that he was going to be kind of like the flip back guy. I think that they were probably going to hook in ladder that. Yes. So that's what I think was going to happen, but how did you not expect that, I mean, kudos to D'amico in the forty-niners defense. They were just like, no, we're just going to clobber this guy. And it was awesome. It looks so cool. One less person to run with the ball. Yeah, it was, what I was thinking was once the cowboys saw they didn't have the look. And they didn't have to look once they realized that it was going to get plowed over on that play. Just clocked the ball. Just take the snap clock the ball and line up for another play. And do it that way. Again, we're talking about whatever a thousand to one chance that they win the game in this scenario anyway, but what a weird, yeah, yeah, the two Dalton Schultz plays, you had a really weird opening play there where like dak Prescott just sort of didn't even really lower his shoulder just ran his face into Eric Armstead in the end zone and then just like spun out of it and it was like, boy, this is. This is not going according to plan. Early on here. And I would argue that, I mean, I don't know, so we'll kind of slowly back it up to the previous drive, which I think was sort of the most damning and so I'll start by saying that I understand why Mark Mike McCarthy did what he did that did not stop me from dunking on him on the website for doing what he did. But I think that you have to kind of take a broader look at the game flow at that point. Like the forty-niners run game had started to work. Now, under normal circumstances, I get putting the game in the hands of your defense and in the hands of Dan Quinn and in the hands of Micah Parsons and all these guys. But they started to get tired and it's not like Sam darnold's your quarterback. You do have dak Prescott. You have CD lamb and I looked this up to make sure that I had it right. Dak Prescott was the 6th best quarterback in the NFL this year on throwing downs where the defense expected a throw. If that makes sense. Yeah. So if there was a 70% chance or greater that at any team in that circumstance is going to throw. Yep, dak Prescott was the 6th best quarterback in the NFL. Patrick Mahomes obviously far and away number one. But, you know, he could pick up ten yards, right? I mean, I don't know. I don't give the ball back to that offense. The forty-niners offense, like they're built to milk the clock. They're built to make you use timeouts in ways that you don't want to use them. And I don't know. To me, that just seems like a maddening use of your resources there. Why would you punt the ball? And look, give credit to you. Are you team punt? You love the cowboys. You might be team pun. Oh man. I was kind of team hopeless at that point. It just seemed like it was over. And look, if you don't get the fourth and ten, the game is over right there. I go for it, but there's just, there's probably nothing good coming out of that. Like, where's the calls at the week one of the season? Nathaniel Hackett's essentially pre fired for taking the ball out of Russell Wilson's hands. This is taking the ball attack Prescott's hands, right? Basically the same scenario, I mean, only you don't have a similar similar scenario. Yeah, yeah. I mean, your defense and look, give credit to Kyle Shanahan that forty-niners coaching staff for basically figuring out their run blocking in the second half of this game. And I was kind of wondering a half time. Are they going to have to put the ball in Brock purdy's hands a little bit more here? And not really. They figure out what they need to do up front with the cowboys, you know, moving those guys around constantly and that's what Kyle Shanahan does. And that's how this one ends up wrapping up. But it just, it felt like it was. I know that's an answer. But it just felt like it was over. As soon as they got into that fourth and ten situation, and that was just the way it was going to be. Again, I'm trying to be even though I've already turned in a column bashing the decision. I'm trying to be as equal in fairness to Mike McCarthy. I put a line in there that said that Sean Payton is not a market improvement over him. So let's not start that. I think that's a silly thing to start doing.

"Antonio Brown. That's the thing about the game that I There may be stood out to me the most On the buck side, and on the cowboy side. It was the lack of involvement of Ezekiel Elliott. Antonio Brown is a team's third option. Killed. I think at the end of the season, Mike Evans will have more receiving yards than Antonio Brown at the end of the year. I think Chris Godwin is going to have more receiving arts. The box might have three wide receivers who have 1000 yards and Gronk might give you 8 50. Like I don't know how you stop that team. That's not even factoring in. If they want to run the football. They can not great running team, but with Jones and for net If you need to get a third and two and get the tough, punishing yards you can do so. That's just a really potent, high powered offense. We don't know if Dick is going to be a top five. I mean, you know, that is slimmer. We know, but I mean, what else? What else is the team supposed to say? I was all over the Cowboys at plus nine. I thought that was free money that they were handing money out. They don't normally hear money out. In Vegas, where they were handing out on Thursday. I thought it was clear the Cowboys. We're going to keep the game close now it played out how I thought it was going to play out. It was close back and forth, but in the end, Tampa was going to find a way to win. I thought the line was disrespectful to Dallas. Dallas is a good football team, a really good football team. They're going to beat a lot of people because they can just out talent. You That's the thing that really stood out. I think about their offense, especially when Dak is there. You're just not stopping them. As much as we talk about Dallas is defense, and I thought their inability to stop Brady and stop Tampa. Tampa didn't really have a whole lot of answers for Dallas, either. Dak played incredibly well in that game. The first drive of the game. I thought Dallas remember of Dallas started the game deep in the shadow of their own end zone, and they were moving the ball down the field and then CD lamb had those two big drops, and then they had the false start that stalled the drive. I mean, a lot of the Cowboys problems were self inflicted drops. Missed field goals, missed extra points, penalties and mistakes. But, um, Ari Cooper hit you for 139 Yards CD. Lamb had 104 yards. We know what Gallup can do. We know what Ezekiel Elliott can do. The Cowboys are going to score a lot of points this season. It's just going to be. It's just going to be. Can they stop their opposition? It's really that simple with the Cowboys. We know their offense is going to be top 10. We know that Can their defense gets you to like 16 or 17. If they do that the Cowboys easily win their division. And they're going to be a dangerous team in the playoffs. If you've got a high end quarterback Playmaker surrounding him and a capable defense. You can make noise in the postseason. You just got to get to the capable defense point. You got to get to that capable defense point, and it's one game. Dallas did not appear to be there. In the road next week. It's easier, not a whole lot easier. You're going up against Justin Herbert. Who had one of the five best rookie season. We've seen a quarterback half We're talking NFL keep it.

You have an embarrassment of riches. You've got a beautiful family. A beautiful stadium. You're the guardian of the star. Gotta bust you've got a hall of fame ring. You got a jacket what you don't have as a fourth lombardi trophy. How bad do you want it. Jerry jones how bad badly d want this rich like you said you've been around for two decades now and And you haven't seen us raise that trophy. I did ask the man upstairs. When i got the third one. I said if you'll give me this one. I'll never ask re trade that deal to the extent that he's listening to us not sure he is We i will do better. I got some things that i could argue to get that trophy on the other hand. You know that's the that's why we're here. That's that's why. I'm involved a lot of people say and related to financial but I was fortunate. Lucky and i had some Resources and i used all to by the dallas cowboys. Every bit of it too by the dallas cowboys Back thirty years ago. I came here to get to be a part of team that could compete for the championship. Not a greater place to compete and start. Then then this new stadium in inglewood california. I was born About a block and a half right at the end of the lax runway. My dad had a little house out here during world war. Two and i was born right there in inglewood well. That's i never everything. I never knew that jerry jones. I never knew that. That's that's truly unbelievable. "That makes them. Stand out zeke I think the biggest thing to me that makes them stand out. they're both just such versatile players You know guys that you know. They'll put put their hat on you but but they're also guys that can read from sideline to sideline you know they know. Make you miss an impasse pro or they can bore you. I mean there's there's very well rounded they well rounded linebackers and they play off each other so How does look so much of a conversation about his arm and and what happened this summer and having the team we out to other doctors on baseball teams yankees and rangers. How's he look into you before this big kickoff night. Zeke elliott. i'm back looks good. He's looking good he's ever looked He's very focused. He's ready. i'm ready to go out there and put his best football on film this year. So what what was it like To to watch him get back on the field. How did that affect your team to see him. Get back and be the deck that you want him to be Just aspiration You see like you see the hard work. He was putting in dan day out in the off season just to get back to where he was and then kind of have a little bit of a set or a little bit of a problem with the back muscle and camping just for them to you know in the face of even more adversity just You know rise to the challenge and worked non-stop Day in day out just to get back to on the field Full and been able to throw throw the ball. I mean it's just aspiration to see his work ethic and just his determination. And how how we're faced with adversity. He he always respond. Zeke elliott here prior to kickoff of the twenty twenty one season the cowboys and the bucks on westwood one radio so the the conversation about dak and and what he's become and obviously the two of you growing up together in the nfl. The conversation about quarterbacks being ready or not and being thrown in or not just in fields in chicago is one of the few rookies. Who's going to be sitting there and watching to start. And obviously i know you followed his career being fellow buckeye. What is your position. What is your thoughts on watching. Somebody get thrown in the deep end of an nfl pool at the quarterback position whether they need to sit and watch your what you think of that whole conversation. That's going on in the nfl. I know it's not your house particularly but you definitely i'd imagine have an opinion on this You know i. I think it just varies case to case Just depends what situation. These kids is in it. I mean there's a little are they in a situation where they'll have a lot of help on on offense and they're gonna have a a bunch of offensive weapons that can help them and they don't have to feel like you know all the burdens on him or is it a situation where they need to rebuild and develop the i love better Just to give more time. But i also think like it just depends on the guy self What's his you know How long did he playing college You know how many snaps did he get. What is he ready. What did you think of what you saw from from your alma mater first week. Would you think of what you saw against minnesota zeki catch any of that. Oh yeah yeah watch. I watched the game. you know. I think i think it was week one. You know minnesota always plays really really good especially when we we play them at minnesota. I remember playing there my sophomore year of a closer game that but you know i think Just the biggest thing is on defense. We got to stop the run on. But you know everything else Look pretty good. We were able to you know. I think we're less. I knock that off and I think by the second half we were rolling. Would you think what do you think. Urban 's biggest challenge is going to be now he's in hce in the nfl jacksonville. Ireland's biggest challenge in jacksonville Don't from one level to the next. What do you think. I think maybe just one of the things for me. You know going from the league or from aa to pro just a you gotta lose football games kinda in college like it's like you lose one game one or two games. And now you're not you're out you're out out of contention for the championship So i mean i think and in the lead guy you know use those those losses to to make to grow yourself in. Because i mean you're gonna get about five or six you can get about five or six of them in a year and still all right so wrapping this up getting ready for thursday night kickoff against the buccaneers ezekiel elliot. What is your. What is your goal for this year. You write goals down for you personally and try to meet them. How do you go about that. what is that for. Twenty twenty one We'll go twice was is just a. I don't really pay much attention. Individual goes magic. A the to do the best they can or that we can You know. I wanna go deep into the playoffs. I want to make us out. When we're both i mean just we. We got getting better as a team. And you know peaking at the right time and going on around you don't have a certain benchmark two thousand. I feel like we. Can we got you know you get better You take care of win football game. I think by the end of the season. You'll have a pretty good season. Okay you know. I mean michael irvin. I'd imagine would say something you know like you know. He's he's the king of Of there's an there's two is and michael in one two in irvine you know what i mean one one of michael to an urban. There's a lot that goes back here and then definitely. You definitely need to call the yankee team doctor. Right rangers rangers to. It's the opposite shoulder. The throwing arm. But as i did my my heart knocks review looking at that. Is it on the paper bag. What taller that went along with. Deck being the unquestioned team leader. But what i remember about that was when jerry was on the funk. Jerry was on the phone with the doctor. The doctor said my friends are these guys so if you have friends yes in the same profession in sports yes. Why wouldn't you like if i have a a sports question. And i'm not sure you best believe i'm gonna texture. I'm going to text brockman. I'm gonna forget music question. I'm texts del. Tufo like you know it. And also the offensive coordinators weren't. I mean, you know, the amount of Kyle Shanahan deciphers that around the league that have been on the same staff. I mean, Shanahan was on the same staff with Dan Quinn. Like all those guys have the keys to the car to drive over these guys. And I just think, look, Dan Quinn, I love the guy really nice guy. I go back with him to dolphins. Great energy. But, you know, they don't have the personnel to pull off this defense in Dallas. And I think they are just going to get flat out. And mind you, Brady kills this defense. So I think the bucks are gonna rip through the cowboys tonight and it's just the taste of things to come. Relatively speaking. I need to say that. The Washington defense. I think people look at Washington's defense and say, oh, they're going to be top three top four in the league, maybe. I think they're going to be good. And they could even be really good by the end of the year. But I have to look at last year's schedule. They played an easy peasy one two three Z schedule when it comes to quarterbacks. They played a bunch of backups. They played a bunch of guys who would just ham and eggers. They're schedule was just so easy last year. They have a much tougher schedule this year. I think they will have slight regression. So I think people expect them to be even better. I think they might take a step back because of that schedule. And red zone defense was really good, which is kind of off and on every year to year. And you know, some other defensive metrics are very tough to repeat that they did last year being in the top 5 or 6. So I think Washington's defense takes a slight step back underrated, Greg. I think Ezekiel Elliott in Dallas and maybe you know maybe I fall into the hard knocks curse that and this often happens like I see a guy in hard knocks and I'm like, wow, that guy looks really good. Given the fact that they're three receivers are among the top two-three receiving trios in the NFL The other issue. I think they're struggling with that. Plays into this is the fact that for the most part over the last three or four weeks. They've not run on the ball as efficiently as they had earlier in the season. So I think they're. They're struggling with exactly what their identity is. They had a really difficult time with New England when you play new England Colin.
