"To take us through this strange and exotic world of zombie companies, welcome to Sonia Gibbs. She's managing director and head of sustainable finance at the institute of international finance. The Sonya, thank you so much for joining us on Wall Street week. Let me start with those basic questions. What exactly is a zombie company? And how many of them are there out there? First of all, to take a step back, what you need to think about is that over the past ten or 15 years, global debt levels have skyrocketed. We've had very low interest rates. And for example, non financial corporate debt around the world is now close to a 100% of GDP. And that's more than double what it was a decade ago. So that's a very worrying backdrop. And so what we mean by zombie companies is a company that essentially has to borrow to keep going. They are highly leveraged. They're not growing very fast. Their revenues are not up to par. And at the moment, they face a very difficult situation. You've got higher input costs, so your commodity prices are higher, wages are rising at the same time. You don't earn enough revenue to cover all of these higher costs. And your debt service. So if you have a ratio of revenues to interest costs that's one or less, if you can barely cover your debt service costs, we call you a zombie company. And it's a very good name. It's very evocative. And for how many, I mean, it's difficult to calculate. Because for a lot of firms that, for example, aren't publicly listed, the information might be less available. They might be smaller, non public companies. But the Federal Reserve estimates that between 5 and 10% of U.S. firms fall into this category. I think it's also important to remember that this is not a static world. It's not once a zombie always a zombie. Conditions change. And in fact, becoming a zombie company is a little bit cyclical in the sense that when times are good, maybe interest rates are low, growth is high. Maybe you're not a zombie. But then bad things happen. Pandemics happen. Shocks happen. Interest rates go up. And a company that was formally doing reasonably well

"Sustainable finance at the institute of international finance. And for how many is it difficult to calculate? Because for a lot of firms that, for example, aren't publicly listed, the information might be less available. It might be smaller, non public companies. And a company that was formally doing reasonably well might suddenly fall into the zombie category. So you mentioned the overall debt load, which is true sooner than the United States and not just in the United States. In part because interest rates were so low, there are some very, very successful healthy companies that loaded up on debt because it was so cheap. And whenever we've talked about this risk in the last few years, I said, don't worry, as long as the interest rates are low, we're fine. It looks like those days may be on their way out. We're going to have higher interest rates. So what kind of pressure does that put on these zombie companies? Well, I think it's a good analogy, right? It's all fine until it's not. And so you've had a kind of a confluence of factors that have hit pretty much at the same time. You had a pandemic which hit growth. You had commodity price shock. You have rising inflation. You have higher interest rates. And you also have firms whose business models, for example, have been entirely changed by the pandemic. I mean, amongst the list of zombie companies, you might find a company like WeWork. A company that has been very successful. But at the same time, the pandemic has changed a lot of things for that for that company. Carnival cruise lines is another good example of a type of company who's now in the zombie category or some of the meme stocks. AMC or GameStop. So these are really household names. Sonya, thank you so much for that tour of the exotic world of zombie companies. That's Sonya Gibbs. She is from the institute of international finance. Pleasure to be here

"A hollywood love triangle. According to leo roster consists of an actor. His wife and himself all of us are now entangled with ourselves everywhere. We set ourselves in the mirror. Some schools of philosophers have long told us that all experienced consists only of images that we have in our mind. This has been expressed. In various forms of neoplatonism eighteenth century it was giving classic modern expression by george berkeley in his new theory of vision. He argued that we what we see is not simply the imprinting of them on the mind of the characteristics of objects but the minds reconstruction of the phantoms or visual signed received into the images. Which alone makes sense the mind. He wanted to argue that these mental images were really and aiding in the whole world was therefore real only insofar was held together in the mental experience of some being according to him. The all imaging being god but though we are not philosopher as we can see a difference between what bothered berkeley bothers us. Even we agree with berkeley that all experience everywhere in some special sense consists of nothing but images there remains a great difference between the older philosophers word world of omnipresent images and our own. The difference is not that never in the past. Has it been possible to persuasively. Describe experience as consisting only of mental images rather that such an overwhelming proportion of images we live among have been contrived by man himself more and more of our experience thus becomes invention rather than discovery. The more planned in prefabricated our experience becomes the more we include in it. Only what interests us then. We can more effectively exclude the exotic world beyond our ken the very world which would jar experience in which we most most need to make us more most more largely human. The criterion of well known this shadows others because the well known is by definition. What most people already know. We seek celebrities not only among men and women but even among books plays ideas movies commodities we make our whole experience a reader's digest where we read only what we wanna read and not what anyone else wants to write. We listen for what we want to hear. Not what someone wants to say. We talked for ourselves without even noticing that it is not somebody else talking to us. We talked to ourselves about what we are supposed to be talking about. We find this out by seeing what other people are talking to themselves about. All i know will rogers remarked in the early days of the graph. Collusion is what. I read in the papers. Today he might modernize complaint. All i see in the papers is.

"She refuses to accept it as a hand-drawn and won't pay me. This is frustrating. Basically i was asked by an old lady on facebook a cat group. If i can draw her cat i kindly accepted an offer to do it for much less than i would normally charge. The deal was a digital painting. There would be emailed to her. She agreed and i spent hours on it. I showed her finished picture with a small watermark on the corner of face. She then said sorry. This is not hand-drawn has asked. I was so upset and wasted so much time. Does anyone experienced this. what can i do. I can't say that i've experienced that. I agree have you ever. Have you ever done well. No 'cause they pay you up front right. I was stiffed once. And i will say this after that i got paid up front for everything and time spent chasing down the payment which we never fully got was not worth the effort in the end so i would walk away from the cat lady And just lead that rest. And then if i felt that my drawing was exceptionally amazing i would like put it on t shirts trucker hats and sell it online. Oh that's a good Yeah that's brilliant your money back you know and there's still many sites that you can do that now. We don't have any money out. You go t spring or all these other sites where just upload it and then people combined so you don't even have to go out of pocket mask trucker hat duffel bag you know man you could even do like kitty type accessories lovers on your facebook and then post it on the face of the cat group. Yeah exactly 'cause vengeance is it's a little sweet. Oh man you know. What i would do is i would put it on the bottom of litterbox and so when the litter gets low the cat face starts to pick up and be like fill me up. I don't think that's how litterbox is work..

I know that corona virus has changed things for a lot of people. How is it ended up affecting you. And how have you been able to stay sane and still be able to feed that creative muscle. It's easy you know the thing. Is you know right before this happened. My husband's musician. He's trumpet player An a singer and he's lady gaga jazz bandleader. And right before this happened the past year we had been building momentum on a show in vegas that was essentially the after party to her show so she was playing at the park and after her show at the park. "Yeah. It's just as gorgeous. Glamorous strip tease but on the other hand it carry a messenger for so many messages that are important. Invalid right now. That's super cool. I was going to ask to at being a pioneer in the new movement. I'm just thinking about all of the stuff that goes into doing it which it sounds like from what i had heard and research. You end up doing your own choreography own costumes. Your own moves. Everything and i wanted to ask. How did it start to come up like that. And what were some of the biggest challenges for you imagining the costumes. Being a big one. But yeah i grew up selling my grandmom taught me how to sew so i had a real like a an advantage in that department but yeah you kind of had to do everything for yourself in the beginning because there was nobody to go to for these things and most of us didn't have the money to go to somebody else even if you know if you're like oh i going to get this done so and that was kind of one of the punk rock edges that i think lends itself to it but i also think as a performer. When you're making your character you're making your own costumier acquitting the theme to your own performance. You're picking the music that in itself like entrenches your soul in it even deeper so the audience is getting so much authenticity from you like. They're getting your message. So loud and clear so i think that's one of the other things that makes burlesque a unique. You know it's not like you're dancing on your show and someone's choreographing it and there's a costume department. It's very authentic in really comes directly from performer. But with that said it is a lot of work and over the years. The more successful i became in the more i was able to. I got the getting my costumes made was the first thing that i did optimism wings. That's it take my money. Do my and..
