Typically that one timer does not go man as far as how far it was away from that. And yesterday's performance and like I continue to say, the best thing about this is they were able to score 6 goals, no Miko ranin. A town and for a third of the team's goals right now and he's just been doing too much for this hockey team so it was nice to see a Nathan McKenna two score gold and return of the Mac plane and everybody just getting going crazy. It was nice to see how Evan Rodriguez played and the physical matchup that he finally looked like he turned to leap and it's just nice to see the reinforcements coming back as well. Feeding the red wings doesn't matter anymore, right? It's that that rivalry is dead. They only play a couple times a year. They're not in the same conference anymore, Detroit sucks at it all up. It was a glorious glorious time, but that rivalry is dead and buried as far as I'm concerned. Now the question is, who is the abs? Rival? Do they have one? Well, first of all, not gonna allow you to Nathaniel hack at me. I believe in rivalries and I definitely believe a rivalry when it comes to hockey. Yeah, but it's not the same. You play the chiefs, the Raiders twice a year. Somebody's got to win. But the red wings that they're, let's say, moved conferences. It ended. The rivalry ended, although it's not the same because they did move conferences and the abs have been dominating the red wins for the last few years. It's been very one sided. The hockey guy and me, the guy that sat there and watched the game as a kid, the guy that knows that once my team is out, I don't watch NHL. It's next year for me, and that's just typically how hockey goes won't allow you to put this rivalry to bed. So I still get up for Detroit. All right. We can still get excited. We can debate that. I'll throw that question out to as fans, is the red wing avalanche rivalry still a rivalry. Next, on the morning brew, Nikola Jokić. Stop it. Jamal radio. You can back some from the wind. Altitude, TV, the three pointer from Nikola Jokić way out top, top of the key. Three pointer to beat Orlando and oh, right now, he is the MVP. He's the MVP. He's playing at it insane level again. The team is by most NBA power ranking metrics that the top team in the NBA. Add it all up, this guy. This guy's the guy to beat for the MVP. It's a three P. I just want to start my comment off by how coach Malone started off his press conference. Are you guys not entertained? Yeah, he goes right. That was the belief right now, the nun guitar playing at an insane high level. It seems like everything is gentle. And Nikola joke is just showing you how surgical he is when it comes to just the game of basketball. He knew exactly what this team is needed at last couple years, two time MVP back to back. And I love how he started off the season this year where he kind of took a backseat to Michael Porter junior when he's out there on the court. A backseat to Jamal Murray when he's out there when they're out there on the court because he's going to need those two guys if the nuggets are truly going to win a championship, but when you watch this past weekend him go out there and just completely dominate and whether it's how he's crashing the offensive boards to the defensive board or to looking for his teammates or him scoring like he continues to do Nicola jokic ice in his veins right now and I just don't see how he doesn't get it for the third time in a row. Trying to become the first three straight three peat MVP winner in the NBA since maybe you've heard of this guy, Larry Bird. Next. On the morning bro the Broncos coaching search, now minus Jim Harbaugh, who is going to stay at Michigan, not a surprise to those of you who have listened to this show. So that means Sean Payton is he target number one, the Broncos will meet with Sean Payton today, but Peyton says he's got plenty of other suitors as well. You got to talk with a few teams. That's just done through permission with the saints, but I think this week would be, it would be Houston, Denver, later in the week, Carolina. Do you go there? In some cases, depending on schedules, they'll come here or in other cases. I might go there. End of the week, I'll go out to New York. I have a chance to visit with mister tepper and Carolina. "Has more rush chances than him so far this season. He's in the top 7 or something in terms of shots from the slot. He's getting his looks. He's such a talented player. You watch him. He's still pops off the ice every time he gets the puck. So I'm totally buying that. So you don't have to sell me on Troy Terry and Trevor's leaders, everything you said is very on board as well. So yeah, I'm all for all three of those guys. Here's another situation for you. The apps. I feel like we need to talk about them because absolutely. You're not going to be able to buy Nathan McKinnon or Miko ranch in or kill makar even Devon Dave's, right? Like their owners are probably going to be holding them regardless and those guys have been producing. But because of all the injuries they've had, I remember last time I talked about Evan Rodriguez and I'm going to have to bring him up again because the way the abs are going right now is about as condensed and funneled of a fantasy situation as I've seen where they're essentially only using the top half of their lineup. Some of the ice time totals you're seeing in these games are genuinely preposterous in the last 15 games, JT confer is playing 23 20 per game. Arturo lacking in his playing 22 15 and I've been already just playing 21 and he missed some time in there. But I've been a Riga since coming back 9 games, three goals, 7 assists, over three shots a game. With that usage, it's almost impossible to fail. Like if you're gonna be on the ice for 22, 23 minutes a night and you have the puck and you have even a baseline level of skill and those guys all do. You're gonna be fine. I wish JT comper was a bit better because his usage is actually on a reel right now and they've actually recently split up McKinnon and ranted in a 5 one 5 so all of a sudden he's got legal ranting and his winger. He's playing on the top of you in a power play. But he's not really he's not a shooter, so he's not going to really capitalize on it the most, which is why I prefer a guy like Evan Rodriguez, but all three of those guys I imagine are widely available. And they can't individually fail in this current situation with the way the ads are using them, I think. I couldn't agree more Dmitry before this show was going to wrap up. I was going to bring up the abs with you and I didn't know if it was too obvious or not, but you talked about shooting percentage as a team.

And automatically, I'm like, well, yeah, I guess, you know, maybe next week, and then I'm like, yeah. No, I think grey means let's try and get him on tomorrow, being as we're recording. So flip out the text to Nicole. Any chance of grabbing page for ten minutes or so, yeah, let me get back to you. Ten minutes later, you know, how's ten 30 tomorrow morning? Is that work for you? You know, look, I mean, there's so many great PR departments in the National Hockey League. We're fortunate, right? But you would know this as a former player. You know, these guys are pulled in so many different directions. More now than ever, more now. More now than ever. And is a young father, probably the last thing he wants or needs to do. It's an author interview, but again, tage Thompson joining us. I'm going to say this for our podcast. I can guarantee you we will have a double guest every time somebody scores 5 goals in an NHL game. Because one time, that's it. Well, we'll ask known us about this as well. But I mean, he was just as big tall gangly sort of giraffe there when he landed from the St. Louis blues. I'm not going to lie. I didn't see this. You know, what he did last year, what did he score 38 goals last year? So it's not a fluke what he's doing this year by any stretch, but holy smokes. I mean, this kid seems to have it all. You know what? The guy like him would be really hard and really interesting to project, which of course the blues were doing when they made that trade for Ryan O'Reilly. Buffalo wanted futures and Kate Thompson was a big part of it. But the reason it's interesting to me is at his size, 6 foot 6 or 7, he's always going to be a late bloomer. He's if he's going to get it, he's going to be a late bloomer because your athleticism and your coordination and your strength has to catch up to that enormous frame. And clearly it took him a little bit of time. I said this before and I love just love comparisons to players that I played against because to me it helps put them in a context that I can understand. He's the closest to Mario Lemieux that I've seen. At that size, with those hands with, did you see his one time or last night was like a freaking cannonball? But he's the crazy at that size that I've seen. Like I would never say 5 foot 8 guy reminds me of Mario Lemieux. You got to be 6 foot 6. And there's not many of those. So let's quickly peruse the headlines and it felt like we should start with Colorado. They're treading water right now. And it's mostly because of the injury bug. And Nate McKinnon is now sidelined for the better part of the month. That's the projection of the Colorado avalanche. So do they continue to try and tread that water or does Chris McFarland look for some help? It's easy to say yes, look for some help. But then these players come back and you've got a salary cap that you've got to wrestle with. So it's not that easy. I don't know how they can look for help. It's one thing to put a guy on LTI, the long-term injury, but as you know, as we've seen and you mentioned, is that so when that player say you won't get a $5 million player. Well, when player X comes back, you've got to do something with that $5 million. And where is that going to go? Nobody has room to take any money on. Now, the health thing is really quite staggering. 5 of their top 6 is the only one that standing upright is Michael rant and everybody else is hurt. But it seems like they're Rodriguez, Evan Rodriguez is a maybe ten days or two weeks away to choose can start to skate like an ins close. So if they can just kind of hold their head here for the next week or so, but it's not just for two weeks, two weeks. It's probably another 6 games or so. But it's not just there. You know, they lose Josh Manson, bull byrons, not playing again. Like, it is team wide. And it is just shredded. I mean, all they can do is just they could take some heart, I think, that georgiev has been really good for them. And so, you know, as they look further down the road, like they're not dropping out of a playoff spot, they're 1310 and one, so they're, you know, it's not like they're 6 games under 500 and they've got to try and miraculously claw their way back. Okay, next topic here, you know, we'll talk to Dave known us about this. And I suspect he'll shoot it down as others have. But the solid cap has killed creativity. For the most part, right? You think of management creativity and you think of mccree and the Vegas golden knights and how they always seem to step in front of it in their quest to win that elusive Stanley Cup. So an insider trading, I throw out the idea that why wouldn't Edmonton of course Edmonton's interested in Eric Carlson. Any team with a need for an offensive defenseman has interest in Eric Carlson. I'm not naive enough to think that it's near impossible to make it work because of the salary cap. But, you know, when you've got McDavid and dry Seidel and some of the other elements that they have, it's not the window is closing, but contractually kind of is, right? So I think they look at the next three years as being crucial in that quest to win a Stanley Cup. So this isn't Kenny Holland's first rodeo here, but would you be more willing to explore every wild scenario Carlson included or would you just face reality and you know what? Maybe it's edmondson. Maybe it's another more defense of affordable guy that is going to plug a hole for me and let's see how it goes. If I'm Kenny hall and I'm sitting in that chair and I'm saying to my assistant managers and my pro scouts, you know, the head of my pro scouting department. Bring me any scenario you think can improve this team. And then we'll look at if it's at all possible, like any scenario you can come up with. Let's just, let's bring it on. Let's take a look at it. Let's pull it apart and say, yes, it can work or yes, we can pursue it or we can't even look at it. You got to Carlson's 11 and a half million bucks, right? So there's going to have to be whoever, if there is a trade for Eric Carlson, this year, there's going to be a third team in it. Or San Jose retains a pile, right? But 30 40%. I think it's both. I could be both. And so because then you can the acquiring team can actually have a chance at affording the contract. And so that makes the difficulty of it. It goes tenfold. I mean, you got to think somehow Chicago or Arizona is going to be involved in these brokering deals over the next year or so. But I think that one's just, I just don't see how it fits in. You can only put so much sand in a 5 pound glass and they're at 5 pounds. Well, I mean, the media was quick to shoot it down. It's always amazing to me how these ideas just get blasted. I mean, it's an idea. I mean, that's what hockey operations departments to your point do. They sit down and go, okay, if top of class is Eric Carlson, somebody try and get inventive and try and figure out how we could possibly be. Because Drake, so you get the analytics department in to start looking. The pearl scouts because you got to make a trade. The amateurs, how many draft picks do we have? The assistant managers who have started cook to coordinate all this information and then you throw it all on the table and you go this stuff doesn't work, that stuff maybe can work. Let's look at that. Yeah, I'm with you. All right, we don't talk about the Columbus blue jackets very often. We just don't. And there's reason to and normally you would think it would be a positive reason because, you know, they signed Johnny goudreau, they've got Patrick Klein, who's back on the ice. He's back healthy again. And he's always fun to watch when he's scoring goals and the way he plays. But man was he pissed off after that buffalo loss. And understandably so they didn't show up. They didn't play at all in that game. It really looks to me, smells to me like Columbus is looking at the draft. They're looking at art in 2023 and it kind of reminds me and this is going back 2003 ray. And Jamie Rutherford at the time was with the Carolina hurricanes. And I know this because Paul Maurice told me the story. Rutherford went to Paul, who's coaching the hurricanes around Christmas and said, hey, we had an okay start. We're back to where I think we're going to be, which isn't very good just to be a 100% transparent. You're not getting any help. I'm not helping you. Like sorry, you know, this is what you're going to deal with because they looked at the Eric stall. So they draft Eric stall second overall in 2003. They were looking that far ahead at the June. You know what I'm laughing at the moment. I'm laughing at that for two reasons. One, of course, the blunt list, the bluntness of Jim Rutherford at that point. And then Paul Maurice, that's 20 years ago. I know he started when he was 28, but he was still a pretty good guy. He's still young. By the way, you're not getting anything. Good luck. Good luck. I will tell you though that you can have that view, but if that's indeed where your arm will take a line and in the blue jackets get two drinks, what's happening between now and then is you're looking at your team and going who quit. Who's not interested? Because I don't want them here. You can do good work for your future while your team is looking at the draft. Because it's going to be addition by subtraction in some cases. Because you can not go out and give up 6 goals in the first period in your home rank. And not have any pushback, any fight. And look, hey, Zach warenski is a fabulous player. And he's not there. He's gone for the year. They lost Nick blankenship the same. I think the same day. They defense just got carved and caved in, but you can not allow that. So between now and then, if they're looking at the draft, it's about who's going to be here at the draft, or are those guys going to go somewhere else? Those are your headlines? "Concern here, Chad is that the abs are playing so shorthanded and now they might be without another piece in Evan Rodriguez, but when you're looking at this team overall, they just went on a three game road trip where you beat all playoff teams from last season in pretty solid fashion. It was an all out war with the hurricanes where you got outshot 48 to 15 physical hockey game you come back and you win that game despite being outshot by 33, then you go shut out Darcy Kemper in Washington and then you beat Dallas in overtime on Monday night, a team that is much, much better and near the top of the Western Conference. So what is your overall feeling and vibe on the defending champion so far this season? I think you see this quite a bit in more so than maybe most people realizing the NHL and even in the NBA is there are games that good teams just sneak out and probably don't have any business winning like the Carolina game and they win. And then there's just a dog butt game that they somehow lose. But at the end it kind of all evens out based on expectations at the end of the season. Look, I'm not going to panic over last night. I mean, they outshot Vancouver 36 to 25, right? Giving up four goals on 25 shots is a pit of a concern. Yeah. But that was Frankie, right? Yeah. And he's not in there every night. And to be fair, he was coming off a performance in Carolina on Thursday where he stopped 46 of 48 shots. So good in the bad, right. Exactly. So should they probably have lost the game in Carolina? Yeah. Yeah. Should they probably have one last night? Yeah. Yeah, but at the end of the day, what are we talking about here? It essentially evens out. In terms of the injury concerns, this goes back to the depth of the organization, what has been built there, the culture of the organization, and the type of player that they have. And we'll get into a little bit more on this later on compared to other franchises. But I said this on opening night of the season. There's going to be ups and downs.

"We've been down those roads where we're overpaying guys to try to fill that position and we just saw this past week against Las Vegas, a team expose our inside linebackers, right? Explosive play on Josie Jewell, why is Josie Jones avante Adams? I have no idea. Next play and explosive max hollins. Why is Jonas Griffin on max Hollis? No idea, right? So how does this team really get better? You better hope that something happens and in the universe where the Broncos could start winning games and try to turn this place into a little bit more of a destination place because right now the Denver Broncos with Russell Wilson with Nathaniel Hackett as far as what's been spun into society this whole entire off season as far as it's gonna look better right now the Broncos start to laugh in stock of the NFL. And teams, guys are not looking at the Broncos saying I want to go there to chase a championship because the Broncos are nowhere near a championship team when these other 31 teams look at this. Now we talked extensively about the abs earlier, right? A guy like Evan Rodriguez. Everyone is a heck of a player and to get him on the second line as laden free agency as the abs got him on a one year deal, that was a steal for drill sackett and company. But you could do that because you're winning games. Broncos are not going to be able to do that because right now they're two and two. Randy Gregory injury. Now, the hope is, it's a scope, 6 to 8 weeks. My cliff was on with us about 30 minutes ago and definitively said he's going to go on IR. So you're looking at a minimum minimum of 5 to 6 weeks before he can come back. But even if he does come back, when he comes back, what can you expect? You went through it? Yeah, so we first heard two different reports, right? Mike cliff says 6 to 8 weeks. Another person sat up chapter saying two to 6 to 11 Adam on Thursday and we can get some clarification on 'cause there is a difference of opinion. Cliff was very emphatic with us half an hour ago saying it's going to be 6 to 8 and he will be put on IR. And the reason why you hear that is because with a scope, you never really don't want to tell you open it up. You go into that surgery as a player understanding that it can be something as quick as two weeks. But you also go into that surgery. We understand it as a player that it could be something as long as 8 weeks. I could tell you from my experience because I played with an injury that required a scope at the end of the 2016 season. Mike and it took a lot longer than 8 weeks for me to get back. My quad had shut down. We don't know where Randy Gregory's quads are at, and especially with him not practicing this whole entire off season recovering from a soldier surgery, doing a lot of his rehab focus around that surgery. You know, I'm going to take the over on this and say it's going to be at least 8 weeks before we see Randy Gregory back out there on the field in a Denver Broncos uniform. All right. "Going through training camp getting ready for the start of the regular season and defending of the Stanley Cup. So let's look at Colorado for a moment here. That seems like the obvious place to start. So you don't have an awesome concrete. You don't have Darcy Kemper. There have been some other tweaks with the Colorado avalanche. But the nucleus for the most part, I think we can agree remains. So enough there to be as dominant as they were last season. And your thoughts on McKinnon getting that mega extension. Well, I do think there is good. Of course, there's questions. I mean, it's not just you replace what you what you think nazem kadri is. You've got to replace if you're going year to year comparison. Can they replace the cadre of last year? Yeah. And are they going to have to do that with one player or can two players do that? Because it doesn't have to be a one for one switch. I think it's going to be a challenge. Kadri gave them some grit and some bite and maybe with two players. Evan Rodriguez and JT call for the two I'm thinking of in particular. Maybe they can equal or get near the points, the kadri had. But it's going to be really hard to replace everything else that kadri brings to the table. Alex new hooks another. So I would say those three players who are all going to play in some way, shape, or form in the middle of the ice. Alex newhook, JT coffer, and Evan Rodriguez, they're going to have to approach the point total of kadri. But they're not going to appraise, they're not going to change the grit and the edge that kadri and completeness kadri plays the game with. Don't forget they won Stanley Cup without Sam Gerard. He broke his third against St. Louis in round two. And so you're putting in another 50 point defenseman. 40 to 50 points, like this is very good, very deep team. Then you get to the goaltending. I don't know what to make of georgiev a couple of years ago. We had a terrific year, then as he fell behind and things kind of went off the rails. You know, at some point, there was he got into an altercation with Tony D'angelo that let the kind of D'angelo leaving. However, you know, what is Georgia? Can he take the stress of being accounted upon goaltender? Says he wants it, but can he take that stress? At some point when you play goal for a team like Colorado, your job's not to screw up
