"Right two thousand twenty one. Nba mcgrath cow bone. You're on the clock selecting for the detroit pistons and knelt your pick and explain yourself. Yes oh the first. Pick in the draft here gonna go with kate cunningham six-foot-seven league guard This that that g- absolutely loves. I think he said there's multiple times on the pod but energy everything i've ever said on the pot i've said multiple. Yeah i'll credit you with everything. I say kate at one hundred and three points in the clutch last season that was most among all college players. Second most player had thirty eight fewer points than one hundred and three sixty five points he also made a lot of clutch plays on defense last season. There was one instance against kansas. A second-half to the game was tied at seventy all. Kate had a shot that he blocked it. Kind of helping off on defense dove out of bounds for the ball. Delivered a pass on a rope to a defender led to transition bucket and in open ended up winning that game. It was a top ten win for them. So he's a guy that i think i just rely on. I trust to be like a really high level. Nba player so long term. I think this is the answer here. Kate coming in at number one can argue with it. They're gonna take. And there was a report by jonathan devonian promotion hausky that few more players were getting workouts in with the pistons this week but as i was told wild down in north augusta. The pistons are taking kate cunningham. They're going so anything else is just going through whatever process. They feel like they need to go through. Cunningham has the highest floor. He's going number one. That hasn't been reported yet. But it's going to happen. So barring something stunning or major turn of events. They'll be number one. Gpa you wanna word in on kate or you want me to make this number two selection right here right now. I would just say one more thing. About what the pistons are going gonna do it number one. You guys arrived. I think everybody knows it is almost certainly going to be cake cunningham. It'll be shocking if it's anybody other than k. cunningham but if you're bringing in other prospects if you're the pistons evan mole bleed jalen green like there's no harm in doing that like you get you get your eyes on them. You have a lunch and dinner with them. You don't know where they're going to be some day where you might be some day and it just developing a relationship with somebody who projects as a possible future. Nba all star. Like if you've got an opportunity to do that because of where you're selecting in the nba draft even if you know who you're picking and who you're not picking like sitting down with some of these other guys is there's no there's no harm and it could actually be beneficial somewhere down the road. I agree all right number. Two the the pick seems to be clear to me. Although i don't know if this is going to actually happen next thursday. When the draft commences at the barclay center in brooklyn i got the rockets taken jalen suggs at number two now as will soon discuss as anyone. That's listening to the pod in our draft profile profile episodes that we aren't iran. You know the the one two three four kind of top tier here. I'm going suggs. Because i think he's got the highest upside here. I think he's a tremendous athlete. I can last season. When he ran the offense as a freshman and immediately was very very good. He averaged fourteen point four points. Five point three boards four point five assists did have two point nine turnovers per game but overall thirty four percent beyond the three point arc seventy six percent from the line and then fifty percent from the field overall. He has all star upside again. All star upside rockets. I think would immediately find themselves in a in an upward trajectory with the player like suggs on the roster. We'll see if they have the gumption to actually wind up going with them because mobely is an interesting big jalen. Green is considered the best offensive prospect in the draft by plenty of people. But for me this mock draft. I'm in the number two slot. My a lot of instances. here. I'm going with players. I think is best available. And i did hear about by the way real quick on that when i was talking with some nba. Evaluators down at north augusta. We got to talk in this notion about fit and draft and how guys are projecting they picked and one guy. One person in front office told me when it comes to the top. Ten like with the exception of if there is clearly like a center. And you don't need a center and your needs are quite obviously like in the back core or with some sort of athletic wing or if there's a point guard that's very good scalable but you already have like a top fifteen point guard. That's when you might switch it up. But specifically in the top ten you are trying to identify an ad the best talent possible on your roster and so the evaluator was just kind of saying. Sometimes i think people get too caught up in this idea of trying to build mock drafts and project based off fit when in reality at least in this person's opinion and perspective it's way more like no you've got you've got a big board a one to sixty one to eighty one to one hundred and those first ten fifteen names on the board are. The players are going to be best. And you're gonna pick those regardless in many instances of who you have available on your team. So with that in mind i just think suggs has the high upside and he's number two for me at the rockets. It's something i've been screaming for years now. I don't know that sucks is going to be taking second. I'm not sure that he should be reasonable. People can disagree on that. I don't think it's crazy. You know he's got all the intangibles coaches loved him. The athleticism is there is a winter. All that stuff is there. I don't know that he pops the way. Evan mobely pops or jalen green pops but all the intangibles aaron and as we've seen over and over again for decades in the nba. That stuff absolutely does matter. So if you're picking first second third you should try to take the guy you think. It's going to be best getting caught up in fit. That's that's how you you don't take michael jordan because you've already got clyde drexler in theory. I hear ya boy. Did you miss that one up. So that went up even know. Clyde drexler was future hall of famer. And you still got it wrong. So i didn't know until i saw with my own eyes. How kevin durant james harden and kyrie irving. We're gonna fit together. But when they play they were all healthy. They were awesome. The most important fit you can have an nba franchises pairing awesome players with each other. And that that's what you're shooting for. You're not looking for a wing because you need a winging out looking for a big 'cause you need a big looking for gar gar. You're looking for somebody who's awesome. So if you think jalen suggs is going to be awesome. Then that makes sense to me at number two number three cavaliers picking. I'll go with evan. Mobely the pac twelve player of the year freshman of the year defensive player of the year just a near perfect. I don't wanna throw out. Words like perfect but a near perfect modern big prospect sixteen point four points eight point seven rebounds blocked point nine shots per game. His one season at usc..

"I think i can do that. And he's you know smart player. I think he has a high skill of dick that touches going to improve and he does a very good hands. I thought He's on his face up game trying to drive to the basket and finish you. Don't really see guys in college. Who are big able to like really have enough room to do like a attack the basket finish off a one foot. We didn't really see him. Get any euro type of game. I think he could get into that type of finishing though as time goes on and he was he did have some pretty big dunks every once in a while coming off of one foot. So i think that's know be able to triple threat blow by the guy again. Doesn't the quickest first step in the world. Another thing that maybe could improve for him. You know a lot of it was kind of already would put the ball catch the ball and like a pick and pop from eighteen feet at the top of the key. Make his first move to his ride. And then it's been back to his left and kind of work in a position try and step around the guy and that would work okay but it's also not just like a unbelievable offense so i think that's about all i've got on him as a as an offensive player is. Is there anything else that you wanted to share. Yeah i don't wanna get too deep into like a psychological profile. Because i don't have that on mobile but it seems to me when i watched the film that e offensively kinda wishes. He were a little bit shorter because he liked it. Seems like he really relishes doing those smaller guy. Things hit head passes triple threat attacks and those passes in their ways to make that work for bigger dudes and thankfully the nba has evolved coaching wise and player development. That if a player is good enough at doing those things that they will get the opportunity but it is. It is notable with him. Like you hear all the time about the players who grew up as guards or these are things like you could see the pop in his movement and everything else when he gets those opportunities and one of the defining questions of his mba grew will be not whether he gets the opportunity to things but is he good enough at them to have a team give him those opportunities as a starter is a closer you know in second unit minutes or something like that obviously like he could probably be the could probably be there. But that's not where the rubber meets the road for a guy who could potentially be top five there and so let's get into our evaluation of him and turning on the offensive end. The bar is just so high right now for a center to be someone that you run offense through into the only guys who you're just like. Oh these guys are just like such massive problems are embiid and nicole yokich and and talent and top threat. Townsend other one. But you know he's such a shoot. He's got more size and strength than mobile. I don't see moberly getting to be that level of offensive player and so then you could get into more kind of not necessarily the same type of player but kinda you're so bonus bam type a level you know vuckovich again. Different games for all these guys but a guy who maybe can be a second type of option or you run a lot of stuff through some guards but you isn't necessarily the guy who's creating elite offense for you but could be a good support player and also potentially could be better on defense than a couple of those guys that i could see but i i don't know that that's even certain that am i think there is potentially a world in which and the other thing too is that to really unlock his potential on the offensive. And he's got to be a five defensively You know him going up against trying to post up on like jae crowder when you have another center on the floor. I just don't. I don't see that working that well to be a foundation we'll and also also his triple threat gave and all that if he's being guarded by smog is going to be very different. Yeah i mean shooting ability ability to drive and pass. The passing is a lot less useful when you have another center on the floor as well because that's center probably can't shoot particularly if it's gotta be like a burly type that's able to protect him because he's too thin so as offensive game. I think at center could be really good at power forward. I mean maybe just he could be. He would have to make himself into like an awesome shooter as opposed to just like a solid shooter. And so that's that's a point of concern. But i don't see him as just this like dominating offensive player and then defensively again. I think the potential is very high. Could he be a guy who could switch a lot. Maybe maybe could it. He just you just wonder what it would be like more out in space at the nba level. You might have to evolve into that to get more athletic. it's hard for me to get into a stance You know he does have the high center of gravity. There's a defensive glass. He could struggle. It does protect the rim. But you do see him. As a little jeremy defensively although although just a much smarter player like jerry bisbee problems the following in that the mobley's can get out of that but shrug a little bit on. The defensive glass makes blocks but you know more of his blocks are kind of in the guy's hand than in the air looking get those two and as a switch guy. I would say his film as a switch guy guys probably not as impressive as what we saw. Jaren at michigan state and jaren even is not really been that good as a switch guy in leaked these things could all evolve and if especially if you have the right. Coaching and the right body development in jeremy struggled with injuries as well. But i i would say jaren is like a pretty decent conference defensively. Would you agree with that. I think mobely. I think he could be a little bit better as a straight five in jaren has been so far but i think it's a reasonable cup is better pick and roll defender. I would say jaren also. I think we'll be able to get stronger a little bit bigger frame of. Oh both those guys are are that strong right now. You know they both gonna have like this little drive game. It will but i would say Jaren better shooter. Although journ shooting was a revelation once he actually got into.

"I'm like yeah you know what they're flashes here like there's some raw material but he also is going to have to like majorly improve all these but he's a a really young guy as well he is twenty years old now just turned twenty about ten days ago so maybe slightly older than your normal One and done guy but still obviously very young and raw and also a guy who because he's so thin you could see maybe getting better athletically as well and that could be a big part of how he could improve so there is this upside and a lot of different areas. But there's also you don't see that one thing other than maybe just being able to pass that you're just like oh this guy's gonna be going to hang his hat on as someone who were going to run offense through other than just as like a passer at the l. Should we talk about his post game a little bit sure. I thought that his post his post up game wasn't it wasn't particularly impressive for me as a score like he can't move guys well enough to really create some of those problems and i also. I wasn't the biggest fan of mobley's touch around the basket like when he can get all the way ensure yeah absolutely but like the kind of like the five foot six foot shot. I didn't love it. Well yeah you know it's interesting. I thought it seemed like he would get good. Looks more than he would make them outta posts ups. And that's a good way to describe it. I i had an articulated that. But that's that's a little bit harder for him to get the ball sometimes because he will get fronted or or whatever they did a decent job game to and he had twenty three percent usage. Which for this player type is totally fine. It's not dominating but it's hard for big man to get the ball lot as well 'em again. The skill level was obvious. I think he gets great extension on his jump hook if he's able to get to that he's able to step around guys. He's got up fakes. He can go right. Shoulder can go left shoulder. He can shoot a turnaround. He's got a left handed hook as well now. The post up numbers were not particularly impressive on synergy whereas these more efficient on other types m you know i think kind of that finishing and the touch came into play. And that's that's a big part of it right just whether you can make that shot. Go in you. Nickel yokich and de'andre aiden. They have that. And i don't know if been mobely does but he's still is skill level is very high and yeah you know he is not going to be able to back down but he can kinda work at a position go back and forth step around guys then get guys out of position. Step through do if you put a gun to my head. And say hey. Is this going to be someone where it's like. You're gonna throw the ball against another center and having to work. I would say probably not if you have them against us a small against a switch and particularly because he can triple you know maybe he could dribble into that as well. you know. maybe that's something you might see me think even ran like a like five one pick and roll at one point and made a nice pass out of it to a shooter so again there's like i'm not ruling out the possibility that he keeps. Be good at posting up or that. He could be good against switches or against smaller players. But he's just he's thin enough. He's just i he doesn't. He doesn't screen to me like oh man. This guy is just going to overwhelm you. We got a double team here because he's posting up against our small forward and it just going to be a disaster for us and now now we're in rotation right like maybe get there. Maybe he doesn't. I would say more likely than he doesn't I think you would need to get stronger. And more athletic as well or he's got to become a better shooter in or have pick and pop where you have to switch them on pick and roll as well His a part of that's part of why the second game i watch for mobely. After the wash gonzaga. I was against washington state and you know looked at box scores. I don't know a ton about even the pac twelve were my alma mater is offered about. Did you know that. The pac twelve conference champions because Because bill walton reminded us of that every go to these games that i watched a approximately it was phenomenal. The joy that i had listening to snippets. Bill walden just it it. It just made my it made parts of my week but so the washington state game which did not have belongs commentary because it was it was the game at wazoo. Were film from this. Really weird high camera angle. Which i kinda loved for evaluating evan defense. But that was a game that i chose deliberately because moby had twenty points. Eleven rebounds six blocks. And i'm like okay. This is e. He had a couple of games. Were scored more points but against a against the pac twelve opponent and everything else like that somebody okay. This is going to be evan. Mobely like he's gonna had this really good game. They won against washington state and he did play well to be sure but offensively scored those twenty points. He never was like oh crap like on individual plays or anything else like they weren't like sending sending too many doubles. They were the what the washington state cougars were. Not freaking out that much about evan. Mobley's offense and i thought that that was notable when you think about you know the dramatic increase in talent. That's gonna come in mobiles going to get better but the talent around him both on his team and against him is going to jump up to. Yeah now that said it's just it's tough for big guys to dominate in college in. There's not a lot of space here. you don't have a ton of shooting just. It's hard to enter the ball. 'cause there's defensive three seconds and all all that So as a finisher and gets into pick and roll but too he definitely if he gets it a little bit on the move he can pop up and kind of get his head near the rim. You're like oh dunk that fast. Does it have the greatest second jump at least at this point is career and is not that quick off the floor he can get. I don't know if he's going to be like a go. Grab it at the corner of the backboard type guy as elliot finisher you know. I think he can have solid gravity. I would consider it more above average same thing around the rim to like he can definitely get up and dunk it in ways. That are a little bit quicker than probably your average. Nba center buddies. I i don't know that. He's not like unbelievably close now. Maybe that's something that because he's so thin maybe he could really improve that explosion. Become a more powerful jumper and again. He's got pretty decent left and right hand and he's got to learn to deal with getting bumped a little bit more. You know..

"On whatever device you want. We usually just cast ours from my phone and masterclass dot com slash cap space for fifteen percent off master. And don't forget that /capspace your else in another. You came from us. Talk about the offense now. And i the actually. Most impressive skill for him for me was his passing average. Two point four assists per game which for a college. Ba guy is really good. But he's made the right decision nearly every time. I was really impressed like if the team was playing zone. And he got the ball at the foul line. He would make the right pass. If he got double teamed us able to find guys on the weak side even more impressive is that you know he likes to face up and drive and handle the ball and he's able to make plays on the move. It's not even necessarily here like we talked about bam out of bio who's been a great guy running so the d. h. o. Game out at the elbows but then when he actually like puts his head down to try and score a head stays down. He isn't able to make the play yet. I thought globally actually was able to do that when he got double teamed. Or when he would get into the lane and didn't necessarily have anything he would like find cutters along the baseline or kick it out to the correct shooter. If there is a guy who had to on the weak side he would pick the one who is. There's a beautiful play that he had one of the games where he kind of drove on the baseline got caught underneath and then was able to just do a little lay down pass to his brother for an easy layup as he was trapped underneath the basket so just really impressive suffering one of the better especially for a freshman one of the better passing bigs that i've seen so i think he's absolutely profiles as one of these guys that you can run everything through at the elbow. Which i i really liked that as a starting point for his game because i don't necessarily see him as a i think it's possible can get there but i think probably more likely than that. He's not going to really be a dominating one on one score right and the mobely offensive game is so fascinating. I i love to his interior passing like especially to his brother isaiah but that that isn't something you normally see from from big men ever like in college but especially from from a high end one who you know just not. There's not a ton of opportunity. Those look good. I also thought that mobley's passing vocabulary was better than most big jets bounce passes like two guys that were cutting and other that you just don't see very often that was very encouraging in the other reason why i think that's you brought up the kind of the limitations with him. As a score is that it could see a radically feed into a an overall game where moby could be a jump shooter as well and mobely shoots a pretty easy ball now. He only shot twelve of forty which is thirty percent on threes this year but sixty nine percent from the line is terrible and then he only mobile only took twenty five mid mid-range shot so that's as energy defines it that seventeen feet to the three point line but he was thirteen to twenty five and i thought that his the mechanics on his shot looked pretty good so i don't think that mobile is going to be able to do the yokich game of you know make passes and then if you get a smaller guy on draw double or if you get a smarter guy you just believe the crap out of him. I don't think nobody has those those physical tools or the skill tools to get there. But i think he can do some other things that are that are potent. And maybe that doesn't make him the same type of hub as the best like. I don't know that he can do the kind of like the d. h. o. Attacking for a score. The way the bam can do like we saw in the eastern conference finals in the bubble but this is a really nice place to start and its unconventional. But i think it could work you know. I think he's offense other than maybe as an offensive rebounder. I think he is pretty solid in just about every area as a big and you mentioned the shooting my guess would be that is shooting is going to be okay but not like a five alarm fire. We gotta guard. This guy is gonna hit forty percent of his threes. got like a little. I don't know that i'd go quite as far as the easy ball that you said. I think it's a little bit flat. A lot of his shots were shorts. He'll he can face up. And i'm by more mechanically like his lower body is really smooth. Rather than the way it is in the air. Yeah so so. I guess And there are times that he could like bus. Something out off the dribble. They're like times when he would just really out. Nice moves author like there's one time he caught it triple threat near the free throw line and did a jab step right and then between his legs and then i think he actually like set up a pass out of that to a guy underneath which was really impressive. So is he going to get to where he can like ice. Oh and shoot a step back like many of these things. Where i'm like. Okay like they could happen right. He's still a bit of a top of the rossa and he obviously has a very high skill level. Already the balls gotta go in the basket. I think he could get the footwork easily enough. And has the athleticism get some separation and shoot a step back or shoot a fadeaway out of the mid post or maybe face up and drive as well so maybe he could have a little bit of that ice. Oh game. I would say the odds are against it. I don't think he has like an unbelievably fast for step. I don't think that his jumper is going to be like. Oh man this is just like so good that we can't we gotta get up on them and then we're worried about blowing by but i think all those things are possible right like he. He's this is why again. I feel like i don't have a great feel for him because you'll watch him do some of these things and you're like oh the sexually could be pretty good. It's just you wonder is it. Kenny will actually be able to evolve this. You see these flashes. Kenny evolve this particular skill. And you feel that way about his post game you feel that way about his face up game other than the passing you know basically every aspect his pick and roll game as well as either a pick and pop guy or a roll man. I'm like yeah you know what they're flashes here like there's some raw material but he also is going to have to like majorly improve all these but he's a a really young guy as well he is twenty years old now.

"They hopefully have some pieces around him. Again this is going to be very or paul. Millsap could be another one. But they're still they're not gonna find someone who's good as jae crowder still you know and You know they do have a reza as a they have rights on him if they wanna pay. I guess that's part of your stay over like all right then you could bring back a reason to we haven't mentioned the name victory depot yet. It sounds like he's not necessarily even gonna play next year. But i could see them bringing him back on just kind of like a a minimum just to keep them in the building and then it wouldn't have as you heard writings. Yeah the i mean it would be nice because it wouldn't cost you anything to keep him. Basically in terms of your cap space this year to just sign him to a minimum. And then you keep moralities in the building and then if everything goes well you can try to bring him back for a larger price. He would be the next year because they're still have bird rights even though he went down to the minimum. That's about do you have anything else. Otto porter might be an interesting reclamation project here. Kelly oubre could be interesting for these guys. Batumi would also be fascinating. I think to necessarily doesn't necessarily have to be a four. You could have butler kind of play. The four defensively and just more of a three in that position as wall. And then you know. There's your west matthews tori. Craig type level a guy also but i think that's about all i got i just gut feeling here. Do the heat get a a major free agent. Do they make major changes next year. I don't. I don't think major changes. But i think they get a significant fraction. I think they get one of the play cards lowry or calmly. Yeah yeah between them in new york and supposedly phillies interested in a sign and trade and their home teams and their home teams and dallas is. While there's a lot of competition for those guys those guys going get paid pretty damn good. I wanna talk. Evan mobilier speaking of college and college players. Yeah let's get to mobely in can start with a little bit of background on mobely. He his the best measurements. I could find you know. It's always hard with guys especially who didn't do the combine stuff to to get these but mobely seven foot two hundred and ten pounds with a seven four wingspan or thereabouts. You take that with a grain of salt. I know standing reach was the best i could see two. Which is it was actually surprisingly low to me. You know usually usually like a a big center prospect with a wingspan like that. You'd expect more than the nine three type range for reference. Go bear and mogambo like nine seven. That's just that's like crazy. This is probably more. you know. Besides the something for wingspan. Despite when you watch your holy shit. This guy's got long arms That's not a huge standing standing reach. Maybe just has a long knackers on the north. You know it could also just be an old measurement or it's wrong or something like that but that's that's something to keep in mind. Well we'll come back to that. Yeah we will and then a little bit of background on mobely a college freshman but he turned twenty earlier this month. His dad eric mobley went to pick played. A little bit of center was the first round pick for the bucks both evidence and his five star older brother. Isaiah mobely went to a christian temecula. Which is which is outside of la. And evan what we want california high school player of the year as a junior and a senior joining jrue holiday. Is the only player ever to win that award twice. He was either third or fourth in the major high school recruit rankings behind k. cunningham jalen green and sometimes jonathan green in-coming go went to ji leaky night cunningham. Went to home state. So you'll rusty on these women on wall. So i'm kinda like where. Where do i want to start. I guess he's obviously very thin. Played with a another big. The thing that kinda stuck out to me about him is well now. I wanna get. Let's talk about art. I'm sorry i haven't place that we can choose moberly. It made me a little bit frustrated that we didn't watch film alabama to bio in college. Because there hasn't been a player for me who has a of a big like benign can go back and by steph real gm. And all that. I've been i've been obsessing over big ben prospects for a long time now. There hasn't been a player for me as a big who has had a larger merging between like what they could be if everything works out like the theory of him on offense and defense. If like both of those hit. If you get you get you know you both of those lottery. Tickets hit versus not the like worst case scenario like the fifty percent scenario and the reason why that is is that. There's a lot of really intriguing elements of evan mobilised game. I think there are a lot of people who are tantalized by mobely offensively. And that's justified like we'll get to some of that there but he's to me what what struck me. So much with mobely is that i expected to be more confident in what he is in what he will be. Then i ended up. I'm glad you said that. Because i feel the same way i really you and i are both opinionated people. Maybe one of us even more so than the other but generally i. I have a pretty good feel. I have a pretty good opinion. I don't have much certainty on evan. Mobely certainly there are very many things too like very many things. You can talk yourself into. There also aren't necessarily a huge weaknesses. Either where you're just like. Oh man this could be a big problem for them. There's maybe a couple everybody as weaknesses. But there's he's not a guy like oh man that's really glaring and he doesn't have very easy. Comp i know either you know. I can't really come up with that so he could be. This guy's like oh man like this guy just as such a high skill level any so long and he can block shots and he. Smooths out. Pretty good basketball. Iq i would say.

"In this game. And i just remember it because trae went right down the lane. He got shoved and missed. A lefty lay up. They probably should have made and got free throws in the last five minutes. I'm like oh why was that. The lane so open. Brook lopez guarding john collins at the ark and then they they ended up going back to capella and obviously the hawks shooting forty three percent from two. That was a big problem. There is in this one but it would be a fascinating off-season now for the hawks. But i think for them in particular. It's just going to be as the upset darlings. We've seen this happen with some teams before where they go. Further than perhaps they should have or further than their expectations. Were and there's gonna be a feeling that they now are supposed to build on this when in reality even getting back to this point will be exceedingly difficult. Yeah i mean there. There are certain parallels to the blazers team that made it to the western conference finals. A couple of years ago where you have have some easier than expected opponents but also you know playing well but i think what's different about. The hawks is that they have this young group that can can have a lot of internal improvement potential and they also have a pretty solid contract structure. You know the some of the bigger money to like gallon are. It's only for a couple of years so they can. They can handle that now. Trae young is going to get a lot more expensive very soon too. But i think that the the idea of is one of the ways that you and i like to distill. This is basically like what the hawks were the blank. Best team in the in their conference this year. I mean i don't think there's no credible way to put them higher than fourth when you consider the top three the top three teams there. And if you consider some of the other injuries and everything else well they did. Beat these supposed- number one team. So that would be a credible way. When i just mean in terms like the regular season and everything else like yeah did they did. They did beat the sixers in the playoffs. And and embiid did play more of that series than i expected but i maybe a little bit more optimistic just because i think there's room for i mean and players as good as trae young as as young as he is generally continued to improve and i do think that the chain the welcome necessary changes that are coming in officiating. Might hurt trae more than almost anybody. But he'll do have the tricks like he's a talented guy. It's not gonna be ian. He's so good at passing and his if a shock ghetto even a little bit better though be very important for them. So i do think it's important for ownership and travis linked to kind of get where they are an embrace that because the other really fascinating question for them. This isn't ejected. Their off-season previews just one of the basic tenants is willingness to pay the tax willingness to commit financially and this is a summer where john collins and trae young's theoretical extension though. I don't think there's as much wiggle room. There could really affect that you know and if you they're probably more willing to match a lucrative offer on collins now than they were before not only because collins so well but also because this is now a team worth spending on and maybe a different way than they would benefit got knocked out in the second by the sixers. Yeah and you know what else to this. May actually in the end hurt john collins chances of getting an offer sheet because now teams will be like. Oh yeah obviously. They're going to match it like they just made it to the conference finals. But also let's remember they basically didn't have reddish this year. They didn't have hunter this year in the playoffs. You know that's so adding that element to this team will be. I think really nice as also. It's very possibly could be a better team next year. And just not quite make it as far they gotta deal with full strength brooklyn and you expect it. Miami and boston will probably be better next year as well Indiana will be better now. They'll of course everyone will have their injuries as we've come to expect here. But yeah we'll talk about the milwaukee bucks and the phoenix suns ofi. We'll get a little more clarity on janas injury before the series but probably will. We'll do our picks for that on monday. But now a chance to talk about a very very interesting off season. And that is the miami heat. And while these stars in their eyes of grupo never materialized he signed the accession and they also have a bunch of free agents. This is a team that could be pretty interesting. Because there's a reason we're doing this on the public bud but let's let's talk about their financial situation. I yeah so the miami heat still have some of the flexibility that has been important for pat riley at times in the past and a big reason for that is that they have lucrative team options on both grahn drug itch and andre madala. It would always the team option on hymns worth fifteen million dollars and for drug it's nineteen four and for both those players theoretically they could decline the options and then resign them using bird rights. But the problem there is that you don't really get any you know it'd be hard for them to clear cap space. And that's the big number that you need to think about for for miami is. They could stay over the cap absolutely. They could do that. They could pick up one or both of those team options. They could retain bullet depot reza lot of talented players on this team..

"He had a block as well as those credited as steel. I thought he was a team. Moore's use a team worst negative twenty two and just he got lit up by middleton right at the start of the third and had a number of very open threes including during that early third quarter period that he just could not knock down. He was the only one out of six. So that really hurt. Bogdonovich is interesting. That the last two games without trays gotten up like twelve and fourteen threes. The only got up five it was ultimately. We talked about this last time. That the bucks were not switching unless it was an on ball screen and the hawks tried to get some stuff going for bogdanovich off the ball. Now that really worked he had a trade threw away a pass. Someone got in the passing lane and then but down drove in and got blocked by lopez. So they weren't really able to take advantage of any kind of off ball movement at all and you know credit to the bucks. And they're good defenders being able to get through those screens which they have had plenty of practice that over the years you know going up against duncan robinson this year for example and i think another take away from this which will be fascinating when we we're not previewing. Nba finals tonight. Only think about it is bobby. Portis got justifiably played off the floor in the second round by the nets who are a terrible matchup for him and portis needed to step into a larger role with yachats out in. This wasn't his best game. I i think that game five was a much better performance for boorda's but he kept kept pushing and was able to get to the free throw. Line got some offensive rebounds and was not massacred on defense and for milwaukee like competent play outside brook lopez for a big was game changer. No that's definitely true. And they didn't do very well in the minutes when he played at centre shirt tonight. Lopez actually was by far the petty plus minus plus twenty five and thirty nine minutes so they made a lot of their comebacks with lopez off the floor. I was going a little bit crazy in the later. Stretch of the second quarter when some walk it pushed out. I think the biggest lead they had around that time was nine and then lopez came out. They had portis at center. And the hawks go on a run almost immediately and then they kind of keep on threatening gets around to three in that range and lopez's just still not on the phone number is knows a realize that he's like that he's available that he's around and then i and yeah that there were a couple of moments when they're on their comebacks got he should be out there but then lopez still ended up like with thirty nine minutes. And maybe you could abortion that a little bit differently but the overall workload is totally reasonable for for what he brings to the team. Yeah i mean. There are very few games in his career recently. When he's played that many minutes particularly considering that he had to guard so many small on the primer again. I thought he did a pretty good job of that Trey was able to get by them a couple of times man like no one has figured out how to stop that move where trae goes between his legs. And then accelerates out of that move like nobody can stay in front of that. Move for some reason back when i could actually handle the ball. I used to do that. Move to actually worked really great for even meet at that point. I don't know what it is about that. Move that kinda just like makes people fall asleep. I guess because. Actually i think i know what it is. It's that when you go front to back with the dribble between your legs. It kind of seems like you're going backwards like there's lows the defender into a false sense of security that just because the ball is going backwards that you are going backwards. But you're not really you. You're still in the same place. So you can just kind of accelerate out of that and the defender kinda will like rise up a little bit thinking that you're going backward. That's probably what it is but So jeff teague by the way longtime object of books fans ir three of three from downtown still only plus one but to get twelve minutes out of him. I think it was really important for them. Particularly because brin forbes i thought continued to struggle a in most facets of the game and t- got three wide open threes one of an often an offensive rebound and just was comfortable taking that spot up with plenty of time and space. So you know. Jeff is not the greatest player deal four fouls in twelve minutes. But when you go through three from don. Tom and score eleven points and twelve minutes. It's stuff to totally kill your team. They they survived it. I mean antique making the shots was important. I mean i didn't see him. Make any like specifically terrible plays either and there were a couple of bad defensive. Plays and and he got he got burned where teague made a great pass. Pj tucker and pg tucker had one had one of the most epic record scratches in a while where he had the ball and he looked at the three point line he looked at the shot and then he dribbled in and had nothing and then pass the ball out to. i think it was content or some. Oh yeah there is the ultimate. Pj possession in the third quarter where he's standing in the dunker spot or maybe more accurately the floater spot in his case and his man collins comes in totally mucks up the buck. Do doing they throw it to. Bg down there. You can't do anything they kick out contested three. And then of course he gets the offensive rebound over like three guys and kicks it out for a three the and and they drain it. You know that was like the. Pj tucker offensive experience in a nutshell. Yeah another player. We haven't brought up at all. During this is john collins and collins. He continues to be confounding for me partially because he does certain things that i really like. You brought it up during the game that he liked to touch on some of his mid-rangers voters is really impressive. But it's also like what the hell is he going to be on like other like the role that is ideal for him is very challenging. If you have high aspirations off his you will. It'd be totally fine. So i really like john collins and i wanna see where his game goes but it's funny like every every time i see him. I get more intrigued and also like sometimes just still still facing the same challenges that i have with him since he was a prospect. I mean i guess united disagree in this a little bit because i think this has been a very positive i would say it's been positive. It's just when you think about kind of like him as a twenty five million dollar player versus him as a that that sort of thing not. He's he's good. He's impressed me to be sure. Yeah you know. I just i think You wonder whether he could be more on offense than he is But i think it's yeah i mean defensively is where you have. Just been impressed by your. He even had like plays where he's guarding milton when he was hot on a switch and did okay so i think like his ability to do that. A. and being the main guy tobias harris which okay you know like maybe he's not gonna switch out on a k. d. or something but as far as just a guy you can defend the perimeter against you know guys like harris and middleton. That's that's proving something to me. I thought actually the hawks could have considered as they're continuing their comeback going with more collins. It's under the only really did it. Very briefly in this game. And i just remember it because trae went right down the lane. He got shoved and missed. A lefty lay up. They probably should have made and got free throws in the last five minutes. I'm like oh why was that. The lane so open. Brook lopez guarding john collins at the ark and then they they ended up going back to capella and obviously the hawks shooting forty three.

"For the next two months in advance of the two thousand twenty one nba draft that is scheduled for july twenty nine. We're going to be dedicating an episode of beyond college basketball. Podcast to notable prospect. Same way we did in advance of last year's nba draft. We started this series last week with a twenty two minute profile of kate cunningham. If you missed it and you're interested don't find it today. We will turn our attention to another prospect who seems like lot to go in the top five of the two thousand twenty one nba draft. His name is evan mobile. he's a seven foot center. Who averaged sixteen point four points. Eight point seven rebounds. Two point nine blocks in two point four assists in thirty three point nine minutes per game in his one season at usc shop fifty seven point eight percent from the field. He was the pac twelve player of the year freshman of the year and pac twelve defensive player of the year. He was a consensus second team. All american who led usc to the elite eight of the ncaa tournament. Most mock drafts have him second or third in this. Two thousand twenty one. nba draft. So let's start with this dead leg. Is evan mobely to you clearly. Unquestionably the best big in this rat. Yes i think. That is unquestionable. We agree. I mean at this point. How about this. How about this for a quick complica- compare him to a recent big one. He played against and was good against james wiseman to me mobilize more versatile player with the higher upside and a year ago in a weaker draft. Class what's interesting is wise men went second moby might wind up going second or third we mentioned in the previous partly sided. I don't think he's going to go. I in this draft because of centers. And how they're viewed and how their role is changing By the year but it is interesting like if you put mobile wiseman even knowing what wise. Men's out like a year ago i would have said the same thing i think i would still take mobely over wise men coming out of college and we agree on the sofa. If we agree there yes mobis got to be the best big available in this draft. I'm with you Wife and went number. Two last year's draft of the golden state warriors. And i think mobely is a better prospect than him if you took them and forget if there was a race. James weisman's rookie season. The injury dream on cussing him out every other possession. If you didn't know anything other than what you saw from wiseman as an amateur and you put in mobile in the same draft in this draft. I would still take evan mobely over james wiseman just because i think mobely checks most of the boxes for modern day big great defender as a rim protector but also when it comes to guarding space. He's got incredible instincts. Just seems to know where to be and what to do basically at all times. That's on the defensive. End of the core on the offensive into the court. He can put it on the floor. He could play make off the bounce. He's a better than most realize passer evidence being and we did average two point four assists per game. That's not nothing. He made twelve three pointers. So we didn't shoot a lot and did shoot a great percentage from from the three point line but but he's capable. He shot forty six point. Three percent on two point jumpers sixty nine point four percent from the free throw line so those numbers suggest he can with time be a stretch. The floor big. So i'm with you on. How centers have been devalued. And it's probably why you don't take center number one but at some point you just take best prospect available and if it happens to be a centered you'd would like it to be a senator who is built for the modern nba on both into the court. And i think evan mobely not perfect but he is built for the modern nba on both into the clerk. He is a prospect who's skills seem fairly obvious even to the layman. I remember watching him at mohegan sun bubble ville late november at the start of last season when. Usc flew to connecticut to play in that event. And i tweeted something along with within like the first fifteen minutes of the first half. I was like i've seen enough mobilised got no business dropping out of the top three of the twenty twenty one draft. I still maintain that at seven feet. Got a seven. Four seven five wingspan. I think he's which his boss green's pretty damn well for his size. He can also defend the perimeter extremely competently in addition to being a really good shot blocker. Both on ball weakside all of that. He is a very good modern defender even given his body's like he's a little life gp but he'll put on pounds. I i just don't see here's a here's a prospect. Where maybe he's not you know an absolute slam dunk. Excuse the pun. Three five seven years. And i don't know but i i am not seeing with him real bus potential. He is he is. He is too good defensively. He's not going to shrink shop lockers. Don't lose that ability if they're good at the college level that almost always translates there and he was wonderful at that second most in the country lesson nimesh keta out of utah state who to more than mobile had more Shots swatted Obviously are bizarre called troops Pandemic afflicted season so yeah. I like him a lot will. Now the question is is he act like he is a center. But he's going to be a center. Like i think he is this four five fusion because he can step out and shoot mid to deep. He shot forty trays last season. Twelve forty that's to me. That's fine at this level. In fact enfield had like seven trans on that. Uc team that took between forty nine hundred. Seventy three so. He got enough looks. He wasn't going to be asked to shoot for triples a game and i don't think he will be at the nba level. Either but i actually think that he'll wind up going second or third in this draft because the team that ultimately selects him will not utilize him the way that golden state is at least initially trying to utilize. James wiseman evan mobile because he can switch screens and defend the perimeter. Step out as a reliable good form on his shot. You see this. And i and i push back against a little bit but you see like some like if he hits the ceiling. It's anthony davis because anthony davis similar size especially coming out of college. What anthony davis. His body type was when he left kentucky there. He was the national player of the year. Mobile davis was declared cut number. Pick in that draft. Mobile is not in this draft but the idea is that if nobody can continue to grow shot put on a few more pounds. He can be the kind of two way four five. That davis has become injuries. Withstanding you agree with that general assessment. Yeah i mean i. I don't put a ceiling on a prospect like this again. He checks a lot of boxes. You mentioned the his ability to garden space. Which is so important at the. Nba level have been watching a lot of the nba playoffs. It's tuesday morning right now so on monday night. The late game was memphis. Utah and the grizzlies. Once again competed but came up. Short notice balance. Unis is the starting center for the grizzlies and he has had a tremendous season. He is arguably. i know. it's been getting all the attention and deservedly. So he's a future star if not a current star but in the regular season you can reasonably argue that yoenis valid. Tunis was the grizzlies most valuable player. Most people outside of memphis grizzlies. Because they're not on. Espn very often but if you watched him in the regular season you come away. In the yoenis students might be their mvp fast forward to the play offs where everything is matchup driven and utah is just putting him in ball screens every possession and he cannot garden space. He has to drop. And it's just it's a nightmare. Need him on the court because what he brings to the offensive in and his ability to rebound and he's really really really good but he can't do that one thing well and it is getting exposed over and over and over again on wednesday night because that's probably the last game and it's utah memphis series. Watch the game and just watch what utah does every time there in a half court set. They put yoenis valid judas in a boss green. And it's a nightmare for the failed. That say whatever the you. You can't put him in a boston or at least you can't put them in a ball screen every possession and expose him because he switchable because he can guard in space he can guard smaller people.

"His best game came in their opener. It was also a neutral court game. When Oregon opened the season in December in Omaha, Nebraska. Against tournament team Missouri. He had 31 points of PJ. You watch that game. You thought you Gino Marie was gonna be packed 12 player of the year I thought he was gonna do what? He came very close. He came very close. In fact. Some people were surprised in the league will probably would have gone to Duarte, nine over Rudy, but organ ended up winning the regular season championship. A lot of people thought they would give Evan Mobley obviously freshman of the year on defensive player of the year, but they thought they would give an organ player that would have been to war. Take the player of the year. But Can't quibble with the choice before is a pretty good player foul on Richardson on the inbound. They're sending Mobley to the line front into the one on one Good for Evan Mobley Reminder that coverage of the N C. A Division one women Sweet 16 Elite eight Final four and national championship games can be seen exclusively. On ESPN. Richardson the door, take 76 62 a lot of ahead, Frank kept non and kept nods. Try to get on a poster for his own good work off offensively, the alley oop and the two hand stuff brings Oregon within 12 quickly up the floor. They break the press, and there's a two hand flush for Max AG bomb polo on the other and 78 64. USC by 14 best I've seen Max play all year, Kevin Marty, trying to penetrate throws it back to Figueroa Figueroa, driving in from the left wing skip into the corner and another turnover. Richardson on the sideline the ball out of bounds, hit the sideline before he could secure it. Oregon. Cops it up and turn over. 11 59 to go on USC contested Now PJ closing in on the elusive elite eight. You know that last possession, Evan Mobley.

"See this basketball season is sure to grab a nice cold those seconds for tip off and fight on and so does seconds. Responsibly important by Sir bases mexicanas, White Plains, New York. Well, all the talk in the U. S. C. Time out, will be about the defensive end of the court. Where the Trojans are giving up. 53% shooting to Drake, four of six from three on drinks only turned the ball over twice the US he has not been stops right now. And the Trojans who have had trouble at times with quick guards. Small guards this season are having a big time problem with Joe. Yes, a Fu USC trails by just 2 28 26 Drake in front 608 left in the first half. Offensively. I think the Trojans will be okay with how things were going, but they need to get more touches for Evan Mobley. He has just three shots in the game in early three. And then, more recently, he had a layup. And he made but missed the free throw for the end one Evan has five points and five rebounds. Taj has four assists for the Trojans. Peterson will check back into the game for us. See, he's given you a C a lot offensively, but Has struggled at the defense event. Background polo sits down. Max made 13 but then missed two that led to Peterson getting back out there. The Trojans basketball in the front court. Let's see if they get the ball inside the event out of the time out, Peterson within the left wing's been working around the double screen. Peterson's gonna drive all the way. Peter's not glass. No good battle for the rebound is taken by Evan Evan can power up and Mr Schott coaches still tapping at it and cannot get it or make the shot and Drake clears Brody with the rebound. So USC missing a couple point blank shots, and now it jump shot. The other way is no good, long rebound. Taj he takes it gets bumped. Good Hustle by Taj ET is Wilkins. Mr. Jumper on that.

"I mean Zaire. Williams, the kid from Stanford and Evan Mobley, the big man from SC. These guys were going top five in the lottery this year, and they're gonna be MBA. You know very good NBA players, in my opinion, and you don't hear anything about them. They're not household names. For the most part, they should market. Those guys will Biltmore. Those of the stars of the league. You get two of the best players in the country right here, Mike. That being said, What do you think of those two kids? You know, they're unbelievable talents. I mean, there's no question about that. I've seen them both. They both need to get stronger. I mean to me, there's no way they're productive in the embassy for 23 years, because you're just not strong enough. Hold up. I mean, Mobley is so long and talented, but he gets bumped. Office. Yes, Pivot foot. He doesn't finish the strong as he needs to, But he's gonna be a great player now. Zaire. Same thing. He's got a little more perimeter skills. I'm he can jump up ticket left, right, pull up and shoot the three. But again, he's still like a young Hold out there in terms of his strength and his ability, But those kids theoretically should develop as they get stronger in the great players. Now you say Top five Probably maybe, but I don't know that that may be because of lack of other players that would be ahead of him in those positions, whereas in a normal year like last year, maybe there's two or three pretty good players that I think would have got ahead of them, But But you're right. Nobody knows about Evan Mobley. Nobody knows about Zaire Williams, but that's sort of a typical Stamford deal. They always run to the radar. I'm talking college hoops with Mike Montgomery. He's joining us here in the Tolbert, Kruger and Brooke Show, so this season is has been different for obvious and understandable reasons. Going on the road is not as frightful as it used to be. Just because the atmosphere isn't there at the majority of places do to cove it So I'm wondering, Coach. Do you think this tournament Hopefully we get it, but it's all gonna be in Indianapolis in the surrounding environment. Do you think this tournament is going to be different? And it just follows? You know along the road of it being a different season or is the tournament just its own animal? Even if it is, you know, Cove it different. It's still the N C. A a tournament. It's still one and done. Anybody can get beat on any day. Yeah, but let's be honest, they they they would take, uh ST Francis High School if they needed them to play to get 50 18 right. It's not a criticism. It's the fact that they need the money. They gave away $800 million last year in by not having the tournament and nobody can afford to do that, so they have to have the tournament. That's a given. And everybody understands that now I don't know how you would sit in a room and try to decide which the best 64 teams are based on the sporadic scheduling. The Colbert The pauses where they've played if they played when they plan, and you really don't even know coming into the tournament. Who's gonna have players available? I mean, there may be players at this code thing doesn't go away and get a little bit. That may just opt out. They may look and say, Hey, I'm a top I'm a lottery in the draft. I'm not gonna risk playing in the tournament. I've got my spot. I don't need to play. That's a little bit like the football situation in the balls. They're serious, not getting her. So I It'll be a great tournament because it's still competition. It will be by and large the best teams in the country. But trying to see them is really gonna be difficult in terms of who's one who's good. Who's not Okay right now. Zag has a fantastic chance to run the table. And when that term they are really, really good. They have no shortcomings, and those kids are their toe win. They had their there for all the right reasons, and they're talented from the top to the bottom in terms of really good players, and you know the tradition now on the coaching and what's the expectations? They're really good. And I think Texas deck or not. Excuse me, not Texas that, but Baylor is a little bit similar boat. By the way, first time since 1960. Neither Duke nor North Carolina are ranked In the top 25. That's an amazing wife and Kentucky. Kentucky And you, too. Yeah. I mean in Michigan, so good this year. Unfortunately, Michigan State, you know, it's weird Coach is that we haven't talked about it. But it's been kind of a weird year this year with the covert, but Gonzaga could go into the tournament undefeated. If I'm not mistaken. I don't think they've lost something. They've lost a game this year they played if they missed out on Baylor, that was unfortunate, have been fun to see them play. Taylor, but way haven't even talked about like they probably probably won't lose. I mean, from what I've seen in the W. C C this year. It's not a bad leak. But Gonzaga just hadn't shoulders, Uh, baby waist head and shoulders above everybody in that leg. So that's gonna be interesting, because I mean, there is a there is a possibility. We could have our first undefeated team this year since, um, early seventies. Yeah, They're, uh, that's for sure. They're better than everybody. By far I would have thought the one place that they could have run into a little bit of trouble would be at BYU. But there's no crowd now. So you know the normal 20,000 people in there screaming at you, you know, and all wearing white shirts and you know, then you got altitude, and it's a little on Irving. And they're good, but this year, no crowds so that the gates a little bit of what you have to face. They will. I think there's every Possibility that they will be undefeated going in it would. They would have to have a terrific slip up and or lose a kid or two via the cold it where they couldn't play, but Kessler is a I'm not talking. Kessler, Albert Kid, Burt. Yeah, Casper. She is mean. He's been their respect. Yeah, yeah, He's really good. And then their point guard Now you talk about lottery top. Pick that point guard you right up there with him. He is that sex is something that's really good. You know, It's interesting you mention when they go to BYU. They all were white. And they call it a white out which I say it'd be way home games redundant anyway. They don't need to call the white out anyway. That's my joke of the day. Let me ask you this because something, Jeff Van Gundy said. Thank you on Saturday drink minimum when he was done the Lakers and the and the Celtics game, he said. The skill and I think he said something I may paraphrase here, but the skills never been higher assed far as basketball players a concern when I listened to him say that Like totally and I'm gonna have to get him on to ask him about it cause I disagree with that. I think there's some things that have never been better shooting, which is number one. Shootings never been better shooting from range. Has never been better. But I would argue that the skill is worse than it was 20 years ago in the game is forest people being able to do multiple things? On a basketball court. They can make and shoot and they can penetrate and kick out. But when you ask him do a lot of the other stuff in the game. I don't think this skills. In fact, I think the skills worse and it was 15 20 years ago. What do you think? I don't disagree with that..

"The half and end up with the 23 point first half, so certainly trying to avoid that after the good start here team and at the top of the key looking a hand off the Bentley Bentley's got it through Peterson hounding him. Bentley coming inside. Doesn't want any part of Evan Mobley stops. The lane could be three seconds. They don't call it And he'll pass it out, and Jared Haider will set the offense. Hyder took him looking to drive ET He kicks out the Bentley Bentley. Tough step back to in and out and the rebound inside to Isaiah Mobley. Good D there by the Trojans. Isaiah Rushing it the other way in our travel now looking to take anti ceviche kicks it to Evan Evan drives inside. Everyone throw it up, no good and Evan's going right back to the free throw line. As there seems to be no match up for him. Listen, there's no match for him in this league, but there certainly is no match for him in this Cal lineup right now. And this time it's team in that bumped Evan on the way up, so Evan will shoot two more Trojans free throw shooting woes well documented. It was another ugly night on Tuesday, which certainly cost you in a two point game, But they're off to a three for three. Start all. Evan Mobley free throws. And they lead it. 10 3. Mark Fox, the cow coach. We mentioned him earlier. He's still sticking with the student. I guess he started the season without it. And in December he went back to the traditional suit and tie in the infield all season, has taken advantage of The luxury of Follows and sweats becoming the new norm. Haven't makes another free throw. So four for four at the line for Evan Mobley. He has six The Trojans have 11 their leaders 11 2. Let's start both ends of the court for USC. Here's Bentley guarded by white coming to his right, Bentley looking inside, he'll kick it out. 20 quantity has checked into the game.
