"Do you stand. Let's say you're on your playing third base. Fernando tatis of the hydrates hits a four hundred eighty foot balm for your guys and decides to flip the bat stare at it. Take about five minutes rolling the bases. Are you pissed. Do you not care. I mean i'm not anymore. You know that's that's just a the way of the game and you know if you wanna talk about unwritten rules like in you wanna be pissed off about something that your mercedes is this europe you want if you want to target him specifically take his first big league run. The guys are rookie. Never been in the big leagues. It's a home run. He backflips pinch. Hit walk through like that should be. If you're talking about unwritten rules you should be more pissed off about that me particularly. I don't care do whatever you want you know i. i think that that's obviously. Would you know the young like we're trying to grow the game. The younger generation. They enjoy that that. That's that's You know what what you see nowadays And you know. I've grown to not care about it you know. I think that's what we're trying to grow it. That's what needs happen. Younger fans enjoy that. You know it's a part of the game now But you know a three ot swing should be the last thing that anybody's worried about. You know i. I don't care anymore. If anybody you know him so homerun or whatever. I think that there should be a bit of an understanding on like timing of it. You know like the bigger the situation. The bigger the pam job. You know kind of thing. If you're down eight to one in the eighth inning hit a home run like you really need to like style on it. That hard like there should be like a little bit of an awareness. There of like ba game situation right. I guess i know how hard it is. Get a home run. And i know that like You know some people wanna enjoy it. No that makes total sense and again this. If you're playing a t if you're if the giants are bait one and a another team it's a home run and he starts style and i mean all you have to do is just point to the scoreboard and that that embarrasses the guy right there basically. I've never understood. Maybe i never understood the throat. A guy is retaliation thing like. What does that accomplish at the end of the day. Like so he hits that home. Run the twins. Throw it on the next day does now you think that guy's never going to celebrate a home run..

You're having you're having a nice little season here at thirty five years old in baseball. That's like you know. I haven't reached nine home. Runs twenty nine. Rb is pretty good. Yeah man i You know. I think a lot of the credit Well at least some of the credit. I'll take some of the some of the credit goes to Are hitting coaches. Know the change in philosophy that we've had You know some of the the conversations that I've had with them in terms of you know i. I think my exit. My average extra loss was pretty good last year. It's just. I wasn't hitting the ball in the air. And so you know it's it's like easy to talk about Bad but you know. Some of the swing changes that. I made in the offseason coming into this season..

"The i had ryan russillo on the podcast couple weeks. He's a big mba guy. And i said to him and ask you because i love your take on this the nets when the nba title. What's what's the joy what's the pleasure. What's the excitement. I mean it was three players thrown together superstar. And i'm not against super teams but this one felt a little different to me. I don't know why. I can't really sort of explain it but this one here like you know when you see a team in any sport when a title. You're happy for this guy. You're happy for that guy maybe there's a storyline that maybe please out. This year was like okay. We're going to get these three guys. We're gonna there's no connection to brooklyn there's no connection to the fans. Career ready has won a title. Durant has won a title so in a month from now two months from now when it's all over if the nets are standing there is the champions as an nba. Fan what is sort of like what are you. Get out of that her. So i'm not going to presume that right. It could standing in front of them as milwaukee team that changed both its personnel and its style and has some strengths where the nets have weakness. And so i'm not presuming anything. If they go in win this championship they will have earned it. Winning an nba championship is really really hard. And it's funny because you know over the years. I've listened to jeff. I think one who said this but perhaps mark let you know. They've talked about. Sometimes it requires some measure of luck. You've got to avoid injuries at the appropriate times. I'm sometimes maybe somebody else from the other team gets injured for a game that changes. There's so much that will go into this so i. If you're stupid point by me you could say. I don't think it's a super. I just think they will have earned it. And i think well at a bit on challenge in front of them with the milwaukee bucks like this is idea. Fire jrue holiday right now. Here's my here's my follow up for that though. Let's say again hypothetical the nets win it. Did they just prove then that the regular season is completely useless and meaningless. And i mean it by the way kyrie durant and harden played nine games together in the regular season nine and then they go they just totally bamboozled the celtics now they you know that if they win it all which they very well could and should based on the talent. It's baiser saying take the regular season off if you have to listen jimmy. I think you've seen enough signs from the nba. The pay they are monitoring how their fans are watching nba basketball and and one of the things i admire most about the nba is how proactive. They are as any professional sports leagues should be. They are in a constant mood of self evaluation. What is working for us. And what is not. So years ago they tweaked the rules to elevate scorning and you might have those hardcore fans who say you know. That's ridiculous isn't basketball. And maybe if kerr said this is awhile back. Maybe six months maybe even last year but he said you know maybe we have tilted the the rules too much on the offensive end. And so you know. I don't think anything is static. I don't think the play in tournament in. Its current format static. I betcha there are some concerns about you. Know what are the ratings to quarters one two and three of an nba game juxtapose that next ratings regular season versus post.

"Just gonna say that that you know it's bad call or know that that's a i. My personal bill to i think is just telling them like that. It's outside burry are low. Like when i know for sure i'll just tell them like right out like that fall is outside not even close And then go back to doug on. Hold them right. You know you feel like you're you're right when you're on your That right now. Obviously you're going to be a little biased here because you're hitter. But now we've got this whole thing with the pitcher scuffing the ball and using illegal substances foreign substances ever. You wanna call it. Do you think it's being done more now than ever. Do you think people just talking about it and it's always been done sort of the same amount i think. I think it's being done the same amount but i think what the big issue is is. The substances that are being used are better. Write this down right. Yeah this is what i'm curious about. Break this down for me. And i think and listen. I'm not a pitcher. Like you said. I have dougie exactly what's being used but i mean i can tell you that like if you look at the numbers like the spin rates are higher than they've ever been by unknown guys making jumps from you know. I think it's probably physically possible to like you know. Make a hundred or two hundred. Rpm jump you know based on like maybe mechanics or like you know figure out how to hold the ball differently or good pitching coach or whatever but like some of the jumps that we're seeing and spin rate Are like through the roof. You know guys just and you know. The i think the the scientific analysis of it or like the You know the the reason why becomes incrementally more difficult to hey guys when they spin the ball is because everything like a fast array when it's spinning the same it every pitch look the same so like if you can throw a basketball at at you know twenty eight hundred rpm and a breaking ball eight hundred.

eight hundred twenty eight hundred rpm two hundred every pitch a hundred

I think as a company. You want the lakers. Lebron there for ratings storylines and excitement. That's me like ratings. Point has never crossed. My mind went on the air. You know that you got to pay attention to every little split-second of that so it's a little more difficult. Do you have a favorite arena to be in for a game. Well i mean you know. And i think. Tnt made this point last night. Just just how good madison square garden. I've said for years people probably disagree. Member. i'm shaded because of where. I grew up new york niches. I just think when the knicks are good It makes a difference in the nba. In i could be crazy on but that place is really really special. Golden state i in that run in and it was loud. It was so so so loud. Wash angeles lakers are a lot of fun. You know you can feel the energy especially when they're good stars around that's the funk lace Do you ever do you ever. I mean obviously this will have to be pre covid. But do you have any stories about your at staples. Doing a lakers game and one of the celebs is trying to talk to you or me. You know you have a thing with about someone you know jack say like hey dr is. How's it going. No i've always wanted to say to jack. He and i share the same high school. Jack went to madison high school in the jersey shore. And i've never had that opportunity to To say it because you know. It's funny when los angeles last titles You know i was relatively new to the sideline -sition. Joey Bart is the catcher in the eighth place center and the center fielder is Mauricio du Bon. Bad night. I ain't starting pitcher is the left hander Tyler Anderson. It's kind of been up and down year for Tyler. But against the Mariners, he did have a lot of success, throwing his fastball for strikes. Often his changeup has been the pitch that has been the differentiator. That wasn't necessarily the case against Seattle, so we'll see if Anderson can duplicate the success that he had last week facing this Mariners team. Meanwhile, Seattle 22 27 Mariners lineup Looks like this. J. P. Crawford, the shortstop hitting leadoff Dylan Maurin, leftfield Bad second. And again Tyler Beatty will make two thousand nineteen debut after fine one point nine nine era in Sacramento as far as the lineup is concerned tonight for the giants against the Cincinnati Reds. Former? And Yankee Sonny gray will go to the mount he's only four but not bad three point six four era. He's had some bad luck against Beatty. Joe panics gonna lead off and play. "Show with choose your news. But first we have one big question. What does your therapist really think about you, Laura? Golly. Psychotherapist journalist and bestselling author and weekly, and and writes, the weekly dear therapist, calm for the Atlantic is here with us her new book, maybe you should talk to someone about life as a therapist and therapy. Lori will be speaking tonight at Seattle's townhall at seven thirty in conversation with Luke Burbank. So Laura you've got a book about your experience in therapy. And as a therapist, you have a new TV show based on it. Starring Evan longoria able to tell her name she's never gonna answer your calls again. Yeah. Well, actually have to sing it more. Like, the baseball player who doesn't even Evan. Evan. Evan longoria. There is a very close people. And you're talking about therapy with media all over the country. So let me ask you first. What are your thoughts about pineapple on? Pizza. What are your thoughts on it? Do you feel about it? There we go. So that's that's fair therapist isn't. She I'll tell you this. I love it. Yeah. I actually kinda liked it too. So the one thing that I saw in the. Excuse me. Hang on. All right. So is it just does. It seem like everybody in America is in therapy right now, are we more anxious more neurotic, more depressing ever? I think that we're definitely more stressed out. I think that we were kind of pulled in a lot of different directions. And we don't have a lot of time for connection, which I think makes us less anxious less depressed. What about is there been any effect? I mean, there's a lot of discussion about the way social media. For example, has remapping our expectations of ourselves our expectations of our relationships. I mean understanding that of course, it's providing this sort of perfect flawless view of someone else's life. While we know the the harsh realities of our own. I mean, how does what do you hear in? When you're providing people, what do you hear about the effect of social media on their outlook about themselves? Yeah. That's a really important point. Because what I wanted to do in the book was bring people into the therapy room. So they were seeing not the Facebook Instagram version of people's lives, but the way people really struggle and get through their issues and transform. I think that a lot of people talk a lot about social media. I have people who are dating in the hold up their thumbs. And be like, and then he said, and then I said, and I'm like you had that conversation on taxed. That's actually one of my one of my let's get sort serious. All right. We're off techs now. We're actually going to have a normal conversation. Not a text from the two six. I like you guys are having a normal conversation candies dying over there. Okay. Don't worry about it. Laurie weather thinks in your book inside is the booby prize of therapy. Yeah. I thought that was the point. Yeah. So you need to understand why you're doing what you're doing therapist will hold up in mirror to you and help you see yourself in the ways that you're maybe shooting yourself in the foot over and over and ending up in the same place. But if you don't make changes outside of the therapy room. The insight is useless. Like, you can say this is this is why I'm having this problem in my relationship. But then if you go home, and you act exactly the same way. Then it doesn't matter that you have the insight you have to change. What is the? I mean, I know that obviously everybody is fundamentally different probably probably a lot of overlap everyone's fundamentally different when they come into the room with you is there one piece of advice or one thing that you find yourself continually telling people time and time again, I think people need to be kinder to themselves. I think in a lot of ways we the voice in our head is so critical and judgmental. And I think that. So often, we don't give ourselves a break that doesn't mean don't take responsibility for your behavior. It just means that we need to be we need to be more compassionate to ourselves. And I think that makes us more compassionate to other people as well. So Lori Gottlieb is here with us in her new book is maybe she talked to someone. That's like the way that you say it in a nice way. Not. So maybe you should talk to somebody about that. What do other therapists say about your book about being therapist? Well, I think that they like the fact that I kind of demystify what therapy is because I think a lot of people won't go to therapy because they think that either you get there, and you're going to be stuck there for years or it's weird or you know, you can talk about your childhood forever. They don't really know that it's this very rich human experience about your mom. Right. Right. It's it doesn't. It doesn't exactly go like that. We talk about the past only to show how it informs the wave that. It's impacting the way you are now in the present. But we want to help you do something different in the future. I was just going to say, what's what's the main? Hold up. You're saying that people wouldn't make the appointment wouldn't. Yeah. Take that set. What do you think the main hold up is? I think it's shame. I think that people think that somehow they're week if they are having some kind of emotional struggle. I think they minimize their problems. So they think well, you know, hashtag, I will problems. I have a roof over my head and food to eat. So so what if I'm anxious or depressed, but it's weird. Because like if you're having chest pain, you'd go to a cardiologist before you had a heart attack. But if you're having some kind of emotional pain, people don't go to therapy until they're having kind of the equivalent of an emotional heart attack. And then it's harder to treat. What would be the when you when you set down with people over the course of time doing this. What would be an example, what will one of the toughest questions you ever heard? It's I think people think that their questions are really tough. In fact, you know, sometimes especially with men, I think men will come in. And they'll say, I've never told anybody this before. And then I'm waiting on the edge of my seat. And what they say is so mild, right and women will come in and say, I've never told anyone this before except for my mother my sister, and my best friend, and then it really will be something kind of much deeper. But you know, I I've heard sort of everything and nothing surprises me because we're all more the same than we are different. We all deal with the same kinds of issues. How can I love and be loved what away deal with how do I deal with the past? How do I deal with my relationships that that's what a lot of people come in for? So actually bridging from that are like they always refer to the old adage being doctors make the worst patients, how're therapists. When they go for therapy. I mean, they are they consent continually requesting what the other therapist is trying to do a workout of them are you if you've gone to therapy? Are you a good? Patient. Yeah. Well in the book I follow for patients around, but I'm the fifth patient. So I'm going through therapy. Also. And you know, I think it's hard not to backseat drive, and well, I wouldn't do it that way or I would have said something different. But at the same time, I'm very much the patient. So, you know, I wanna know if my therapist likes me when I see someone else in the waiting room when I leave I think my session was down her. You know is he looking forward to her session more, and I Google him one night 'cause I'm curious about him. So I think I'm I'm very much the patient when I go see him got Luebbe is with us. Now, she's a psychotherapist and her book is a looking at therapy from therapist. But also the different things that go into actually having therapy, which brings me to my question. Have you been fired as therapist? Have people left me? I like it better. If you've been fire in fired. Yeah. Really? Yeah. So what what does that exit because I'm thinking like a break up almost where obviously you've shared some intimate personal things somebody, and you're like, I this is just not working for many more. It's not you. It's me. I mean, how do they do that? Yeah. I don't think with the long term patients. I think it's more in the beginning that you want to find the right fit. And if someone comes in they're not feeling like, it's the right fit, then they should go somewhere else. So when you say fired, I think that we don't really look at it that way. But I think patients are really worried about it because they do see it like a break up and they're embarrassed. And they they don't know if they should go stew or like text. I'm just gonna I'm just gonna I'm just gonna like not not come and not make another appointment or if they should actually tell you. Hey this. You know, I think I wanna go see someone else.

Don't mean much, of course, it wasn't just the numbers. You just looked great is at bats. He was hitting the ball hard one. And that's in there for a called strike one two. Panic thus far in regular season is five for twenty five. He's got one extra base hit. The s John four walks more than a other giants hitter. He swings and hits one off to the left ninety six mile an hour. Fastball wanted to. Here's the one two. And it's in a dirty takes a splitter two and two. Evan longoria on deck. Longoria has had such a quiet series against his old team that has to be bugging me as a hit yet against the raise. Giants trail to nothing to do to panic Torino to the plate. It's in a dirt. Again, another splitter. When bounces in front of the plate. Full-count three and two. Re balls two strikes to.

"Delivers an fastball right down the middle. Above the knees for a called strike ninety nine miles an hour and right down the middle. Not maybe some local knowledge for the rays had their former player. Facing a pitcher as he is here. For the first time ever. Doria with runners at second and third to down and the pitch. Swinging a foul back stream. He went after a fastball. It was well off the outside corner that time. Hate to see that you take the one right down the middle. And then you swing it. The one six inches off the outside corner. And he's behind the cat. Oh to hear BUSTER Posey deck. If BUSTER were to come up, he would be the possible winning run. Now longoria just trying to stay alive here against the guy with filthy stuff. Ninety nine mile hour fastball. Ninety three mile an hour cutter Jose Alvarado lefty, ready the pitch on the way. Swinging a foul bouncing back to the backstop that was a ninety nine mile an hour. Fastball down in the way. Joanie pitchy thrown in this entire that was down the middle of the strikes over that. I want the longoria everything else has been on the corners. Down below the zone. Onto the count to Evan longoria. Do some damage against his old team. The raise giants home opener. Alvarado bed over the ways to carry in Perez. The catcher. For the sign. These doubt it into a stretch panic away from third Doug from second. And here's the OT pitch. Swing a high fly ball the rights Johnny back radio now stops and waits. And he's got it. And the ballgame has ended for the giants. It was a. A real day of frustration. Because they had chances to score many times they end up to out of thirteen to hits in thirteen advance.

"This is opening day on KNB are six eighty first pitch ball in first strike to Evan longoria against heaven lower or Eric lower rather. Now, our pitches and longoria pops went up towards second. The Kinzler is under it to make the catch Doria who had a hit his first at bat at a year. I did that today on opening day. Not this time. One out. Nobody on his BUSTER Posey comes up giants now playing from behind one nothing Padres after the wil Myers home run. Hosea fly ball to fairly deep centerfield. His first time up. Astra time immediately at one thing. Eric lower likes news work fast. Somebody's giants hitters are trying to combat that. First pitch to BUSTER. He swings in. It's a high pop. Fly rightfielder AS and Kinser come together and raise is about twice his size. So he called him off and Kinzler got out of the way race makes the catch to down Posey's over to coming to you live from the Hawaiian airlines broadcast booth. The first thirty thousand fans at oracle park. Get an Evan longoria bobblehead presented by Bank of America. I have six bobblehead giveaways this year. Brennan Crawford takes strike one from Eric lower. Good fastball at the knees. It's on one tickets available at giants dot com. It would be very cool for longoria spent so many years with the raises his is ten straight opening day. Longoria Crawford takes off the outside. One in one second in a giants uniform the first eight, of course, with the raise his first time playing against the race since he left as their franchise's greatest all time player. Here's a swing a hard ground ball up the middle base. It ran Crawford's got his first hit of the year a two out single. And it brings up Connor Joe who we are still getting to know Connor Joe was just acquired by the giants in the last week of the cactus league. Ghanem has many at bats the giants did as they could. But of course, the new president of baseball operations for eighty knows Connor Joel very well from his years in the dodgers organization. He had a big year last year in the minor leagues. Making his major league debut today. Curve off the inside ball why? He's had already won impressive at Batty. Drew a walk in the second inning. His first major league plate appearance. Grew up in Powell went to Powell high same high school as the younger of the two boats. She boys bradfo G and then played his college ball at USD university of San Diego. He takes outside doing. Oh. Conor Joe was a teammate of Kris Bryant at USD. Heads. Great teams. Made a quick climb through the dodgers organization. Now, he's with the giants. "Thanks on with Kevin French. Friday. Thank you so much for cruising around with us. Kaby are is the number heifer in what's going on with the Marcus? Throughout the evening. He's played seventy four you said four four four and four and that means four minutes per quarter tonight against the clippers as right now. He's got seven we'll keep you updated throughout the entire evening eight I can't be ours. The number I want to circle back to a conversation. We were having before Russell back joins us to talk NFL. What it was regarding what Evan longoria posted on his Instagram today. Very very interesting. He's getting a lot of flack for this a lot of crap on social media because he posted this check it out. This is from Evan longoria Twitter from earlier today. We are less than a month from the start of spring and once again, some of our games. Big stars remain unsigned such a shame. It seems every day. Now, someone is making up a new analytical tool to devalue players, especially free agents as fans why should in quotes value for your team? Even be a consideration. It's not your money. It's money that the players have worked their whole life to get to that level and be deserving of bottom line fans should want the best players in product on the field for their team. And as players we need to stand strong for what we believe what we are worth and continue to fight for the rights. We have fought for time and time again. It away. A number. I want to get your thoughts on that. Because you know, as as we were saying, listen, I understand what he's talking about. As you laid it out to me just as far as getting what you're worth everybody wants that. No matter what job you have no matter what your job title is third baseman for the giants longshoremen CEO get what your value is. But as fans. I don't I don't understand what you're telling me what I can and cannot consider as fans if I want to worry about the luxury tax or what your salary is with what the what the what the team spending. It's it's something I'm investing time and money and as a fan, I'm buying tickets. I'm buying memorabilia. I'm sitting in the stands. I have the right to look up and worry about whatever I want. That's what part of being a fanatic is part of fandom. You worry about your team you root for your team. And you want your team? To do the right thing and win, and you're going to have an opinion on everything that they do every higher. They make every trait every signing every dollar you'll have an opinion on it. If your fan, if you if you choose to I just don't understand that part of his of his post. Well, I mean, everyone's going to have their opinion on this whole thing. And no matter what you can you could say what you want as a fan. You have the right to say what you want. But the truth is players are not paid enough to the value of what the the franchises let alone major league baseball or bringing in revenue. So it's like any job if you feel under appreciated. Even if you are making something good. You still want to get to work. Your skill set. Requires you to make a certain X amount of dollars. Well, you can't see the problem is no matter what a fan is only going to blame the player. When something happens like, this someone a player does something like this. They don't blame the the ownership on anything. They blame the player the spoiled player for saying. I think it's hard to make the difference to listen, you know, it's your you. Okay. It's hard for me to make the difference as a fan from from twenty to twenty two from twenty two to twenty five million. I mean, those little the three four five million dollar increments. It's hard for me to make that that to quantify that really is. I think a lot of fans feel that way. What what have? Baseball sabermetrics the same attrition have figured out with war. One war wins above replacement is seven to eight million dollars. Right. We have discussed that before one. You are Mike trout, you're ten war, and you are paid thirty four million. Does that add up? No with the theory that we're talking about essentially should be getting seventy million. Yes. And you think people will complain about that not for my Trump? I don't they would they would find a way to to bitch about that for sure I think everyone's gonna find a way to bitch about something. As a fan. Now, you are faulting. Evan longoria for Tuesday in his profession. Well, here's some of the responses Evans getting on a social media Morita it off right now. Bryce was offered three hundred million ten years from the Nazi turned it down. When of the free agency Manny was offered one. That's not even close to the value of what he is one seventy five seven from the White Sox. And you're saying it's the owners fall, these guys aren't signed. These are very typical responses that ever Mongolia's getting on his Instagram social media pages. Just like that from baseball fans around the country's not just here. The city just bay area fans baseball fans around the country saw this post, and they're making their opinion known about how they feel again. Why were those numbers even discussed that out there? That's something. We talk. That's out there. Yes. Right. All these rumors and Evan throwing every pieces of crap against the wall of San stick. Do what it's to make the player. Look like an ass. Of course. I agree with that. The ownership, look, the learner families awesome. They treated me. Great. Their riches L. But at the same time, they threw I guarantee they threw that out there to make sure that everyone knows we tried. Okay. And it's the player that didn't take. It didn't take the thirty million a year. Thirty million. Can you believe that he couldn't take thirty million? So they can communicate with the fan better thirty million. How could he turn that down? Can you believe it? And then at the same time, you're going learn one of the richest human being's entire United States of America down. All right. I want to take the phone calls that we have coming up next. Got a lot of people checking in from San Jose, Tracy up in the north bay eight away k b r is another promise phone, call up next on the sports leader. With the show.
