"Different. It includes the respects as it should. Their heritage, the people, the majority of people that people that speak French as a first language, it respects that. Now you're going to open up this, I keep calling it a new structure, but it's going to be. About what they're going to put together. And I think it's going to be inclusive. It's going to be different. The Canadians got 7 wins. It's time for something different. No question. Different and new. What is indifferent and is getting old for oilers fans used to play this team, right? And Kenny Holland is in the U.S., pro scouting meetings there. You know, I'm probably having some tough conversations with that group. Maybe with a zone or Daryl Kate's bob Nicholson in the meantime is his hip replace, which isn't funny, but he's going through a tough time medically right now. So the oilers front office is all over the place right now. But the team just can not get on its feet. It just can not. And, you know, we in the media, not seeing you, but generally, we look at it and say, well, you know what? Their goaltending is just not good enough. And they haven't been able to rectify that situation. I don't disagree. But Kenny doesn't have a magic wand. How do you fix that? How do you affect that? He said he's not going to give away his he doesn't want to trade away his first round pick. He doesn't want to trade away top prospects. How do you acquire goal tenders that are going to make a difference? Well, you can't. Unless you do. I mean, the only way you can is free agency and all that's in the summer. And then you're getting into a cap deal and, you know, like you're you're in a tough way. But when I watch the oil, so I'm watching them the other night it's three one against audible. That game's got to be over. Yeah. And we can talk about the goaltending of Stuart skinner in that game and should he have stopped a couple probably. And Evan Bouchard looked like a 21 year old defenseman in that third period was in the he was in the video for everything. None of it positive. We had terrible period. But he's a really good prospect. So I'm watching that and I'm trying to decide what the oilers identity is. What are they? Because I look at Connor McDavid and I see con or Leon dry sidle. And I know what they are. But they're not hard to play against. And you don't have to run people out of the building, but you have to deny them ice. You have to make it hard to come through the ice to your end. The oilers don't do a good enough job of that. So if your devonshire or Ryan McLeod or Zac cassian or Brendan perlini or anybody else playing in that bottom 6, you're going to run into somebody. You got to make it hard. And if it's not going to be made hard, then they have to replace those pieces. Those pieces can be replaced much more easily than the top end of your roster..

"And were you a little surprised that Keenan was coming in that next season and you were going to be back at it being an assistant? I mean, because you had a good year. You got into the playoffs. Yeah, I was really surprised. In fact, I think we had taught me in and just said he's going to make it make a change and we had lost it. He tried to think in 6 games and I just said if I had a gun I'd put a bullet in your head. I said, that's fucking bullshit. And he just said, well, he was crying, and I was upset, you know, of course, and we've been together a long time with like I said in 1990 we'd start interacting and working coaching together, playing together. I was playing for him and about the decisions made and you know you move on. And so I had a chance to later on, I had a chance to go back down and, you know, working numerically, team when they started up a team of atmospheres. So I got back in the head coaching roller for a while. But yeah, it was a surprise, especially the fact that we did have some success that season. I mentioned you playing Carrey. You are a first round draft pick by Edmonton, but back in the 80s, that must have been obviously a pretty tough roster to crack, but you got a big assist on a Gretzky goal. Yeah, it was my first game and you know it was obviously it's an honor to be drafted in the NHL, I think at any given time. And to have such a short career, I wasn't here very long. I think a couple games that went on sound as a fridge with Chicago. But to be able to come full circle and come back, you can have the opportunity to know to be coaching back in the organization it's awesome actually. I mean, there's a lot of tie ins, of course, you got play with Gretzky, now you get to coach arguably the probably the greatest player on the planet. I don't think many people are going to argue against that one. Going back to the Hitchcock thing, though, you talked about this four basic areas to defend. And it kind of it picked up a lot of steam online as far as the oilers fans very interested in. Is that kind of your philosophy in theory towards a coaching your defenseman? Yeah, I think there's the biggest thing I try to get the players understand is I think everything has to start at the offensive blue line. If you can get yourself organized the offensive blue line, you can support the offense. You can get shots through to the net. I think you're in good offensive defensive positioning. So if something happens, you know, through the neutral zone or back into our zone, I always try to go back to the offensive blue line and say, did we did we gap up enough? Did we aggressive enough? We got ourselves set up enough to work inside the dots and defend the rush. And so I have a theory with a defense, but I want each guy to get one shot for periods. So a 6 shots per period from our back and over three periods, 18 cracks at the net. And if we can, if we're doing that, then we're spending time in the offensive zone. We're supporting the four check we're supporting the offensive part of it. And from there, then it's you know you get back inside off the rush and you read to the rush you protect the inside of the dots and you can kind of get a read. So it's basically offensive blue line creating offense shots, you know, having a good gap to the neutral zone, you reach either rush, you get organized and see what's going on, not only in your immediate one on one or two on one, but what's going on behind, we have trackers coming back. Then in the driving and diesel, trying to get the first one on one stop and get the puck and everything organizing that part of the ice with the players can come back and support. I think lots of times when we arrive in these uncovered remnants of their side and all the supports are arrived on or near the puck. And when it's all due to a side you kind of lose some of that support. And then we have we can bring the pocket the same side the puck comes in. It's generally a people around there. And then the fourth part would be just executing breakouts, you know? And I first came here. I remember I sat down with nudes and Ryan news and Hopkins and Leo and Connor and just said, hey, I think we can bring approximately smallpox to duality ice, next thing on our zone. We have E three guys to carry it to the middle of the ice. So we really encourage the defense with the start feeding a lot of pucks into the middle of the ice and it drives drives our energy and our team leaving our zone. So those are basically the four kind of principles we kind of work on, I think here. I look at a guy like Evan Bouchard, and he's top ten pick and 8 in 2018. He continues to get better and better. So when you're working with a guy like that, who has so much poised. He has the ability to wait guys out. He's got a great shot from the point. So as a younger demon, are you just talking to him about gaps about things where you're at least like I've seen a lot of Hawking in my day to know that you're good enough with the puck? I don't need to mess with you there. It's away from the park where I'm gonna try to help you become that top two top pairing defenseman in the league. Yeah, I think the biggest deal of bouch is he was here in the bubble and he didn't play much. He did a lot of practicing and so on and so forth. And we really kind of developed a relationship on where we thought his game could become. And honestly, the biggest thing with bouches to learn to respect the fact he has a really calm demeanor about him and not try to change that and I try to beat that out of him. Let him let him have his calmness with the puck let him have the ability to get pucks through from the point. I just helped him organize the rest of his ice. I think the big thing of bouche is his ice management. Can you put in a more situations consistently where he can defend better he's really strong. He's got a great mind for the offensive and defensive part of it. And the deal away made as much front was, let's get your defense organized. Let's get you on the penalty. Please, number one telling you all for us. People would have never ever thought. Yeah. And so he's got a real fundamental base of playing. And then we did a side view. I said, listen. You know, let's try to avoid a bridge deal for you. Let's try to get your first.

"I would say the the second year. Because i'm thinking of thirteen fourteen but that year is probably one of my favorite years in four divisions problem on favors playing hockey experience. We obviously got the play on jobs. Who's a dream come true and then the at christmas time got two to play in the world genius which We got to play in canada which was just over the toddler Played montreal eramet like we played montreal on boxing day against boston narrate new year. It might have been years actually against team usa and you know sold them. This is the best atmosphere like. There's never better outer atmosphere like this ever plant. And then we play in the quarterfinals in toronto and it was just on a whole 'nother level guys oil Like maximum score a goal and. They're chanting don't hear yourself think they're chanting places roth And we had unbelievable so yeah that was so he had won the world junior year and the like and then re other really good teams hussein. sean keep our coach that we had brought in like a lot of Really really good players and at a at a fairly decent run out of losing to to connor in the western conference files in the job and then ended up going to see. And i think we played. We played utica that year in the playoffs. Only play like the last four games in the series but it was kind of like a cool way to cap off the euro the plan three different leagues and and play some pretty pretty important hockey throughout it. So yeah i was one of my one of my fears inauguration. I think it was just you know you when you play that many places you get to meet a whole lot of different personalities on different people experience lot they drive like you go from suzanne marie where Good team. we travel a lot on the bus. But like i know it's okay. Cnn okay so you're playing you custody. Got a little taste of the four. Am bus ride to the airport. And the two flights to new york in that the a six hour bus ride to work for our bus rights fans nuts to auditorium a great fan base there as well so yeah yeah see. I got like a little taste of everything. Everything season started. We started off in santa monica in playing and playing is yellow. Kingston fish off in is the who was your talk. Oh go ahead all right when you first first couple of games ebbets who is your partner. Oh goodness i can't let go. Ra put him on the oilers for a few years have been like a little kid on three rings him. They don't remember either. I only thing. I remember my first. My first game Was the first shift. I think i had hit a new hair to sean on net announced by one so that was night. Those might i just. That's describe are remember from that. I see games. How i want to talk a little bit more about the current defensemen. So you guys lose adam larsson. That's a very difficult loss. But jim play fair. Also messaged over. That ended up training with evan bouchard all summer. He's a very high end prospect in your organization considering like i don't know if you did or not have somebody take you under their wing. You're now taking him under your wing. I don't know if he's going to make the squad but that must have been pretty special for him. And i would that you were training with them with mattie nickel. I actually Spy she ended up. I switched trainers and a shout. I a north. But i start working with connor and up aguirre hours yet That would have been just over a year year and a half ago so but now being and bush were moose gaining together actually about our skiing so we we skated together every week and hopefully enjoyed it. I mean for for me. Obviously whenever you have the opportunity to work with your teammates over. The course i'm right. It's it's a huge huge ad because your rain the same type of intensity and work ethic that you want during the season you wanna be pushed to that extent in the summertime to. I think whenever you're doing that with with your teammates it's for for me. I'm like gabe bushes booze hot. I am prospects. He's a guy that's gonna be really good player in this league. Really big part of our team so i think it would be great for us. Great festival work together and push each other. So as much as as much as china push losers pushing me each and every day because You know he comes out there and he brings no. He rang the work that we need to get better. So there's a lot of fun and in the summer and agassi working with bush in the bars gain in working with data on the gym as well. We weren't full devon shore zakheim and so we have many many other group gone. Probably just a location reason than i guess with mattie because i know he ended up getting a new gym setup but it's it's pretty far away isn't it. Yeah a little. Yeah yes Is a little different spot. We ended up end up working with honor a just after after the bubble actually and so the end of going in going a little further. North wants the pandemic it and working out with a with adrian that gary spice and it's Since helped me a lot. I thought i thought. Connor switched over to how johnson and joy mcleod for trainers. I don't know if you saw the commercial virtual commercial as it gets. His acting is getting pretty good isn't it. He's the new. Tom brady very very good. Did you guys buses balls about all the acting stuff..

"Find what they did genuinely mind-blowing like i think the opportunity cost of everything they did on the blue line was showed a stunning lack of business. Abby right like cody c. Is a meme deservedly. So because he does funny stuff and i think the unintentional comedy factor of his game is is uncharted but he provided value to penguins last year defensively because he was making one point two five million and because they basically use them as like their fifth most frequently used defense against other teams bottom six and they got respectable numbers out of them. And that's great now the lawyers are basically signing him. And i i assume based on how their depth start shaking out right now will use him. And duncan keith. As essentially their shutdown pair against other teams best players and that brings up a variety of issues. From the fact that they're gonna get eaten alive off the rush. To how many times are we gonna see. Just possessions and the offensive zone for the oilers because mcdavid orders had passed back to one of these guys and they just fired into other teams shin pads or the net wildly like it just in terms of constructing complementary players to how team should be playing. They should be doing. I can't come up with the justification for. Why did they did on a blue. Yeah and this is the thing. I've been saying about karmic davidson's maybe his second or third season. Which is like they. Don't have any defenseman who go and get the life. We love watching karma. David get the puck and go two hundred feet but if a team Was actually supporting him. They would have defenseman. Who get them. Maybe like one hundred twenty feet of the way. Maybe maybe eight feet of the way something like that. But the fact that connor mcdavid has to go off down the ice up and down the ice up and down the ice like he's gonna run out of steam. You know he he could do it for fifty six games this year. Look really good doing it and you know i'm not saying like he's he is out of shape or anything like that but like it's just it takes a physical toll and you and you can't. You can't do a karmic david. Did this season every single night in eighty two game. This is just impossible so you know like to your point about okay you know. I think we all like darnell nurse pretty good. He's a good player interested to see who they put next to him. I think he himself is a good player. Who who kind of does that thing. That i was just talking about now when dario nurses off the ice what happens well. Here's what they're gonna do. They're gonna give tyson barrie premium offensive minutes because he scored a lot of points last year. Which is in. Turn gonna block evan bouchard. Who probably could do a very similar academic for a fraction of the price and then because they signed cody. Ebay bayfield empower the trade ethan bear. Who's also a good player making peanuts. Who was a good asset moving forward. And so that's what. I want to see the opportunity. They basically the players they acquired or the players. They signed here just like it was like a domino effect of all. We're gonna make one questionable of your and it's gonna lead to a series of bad ones and and now they come out of this with this blue line where jacqueline as thirty second ranked blue line in terms of your roster builder. Yeah it's it's not pretty and it's like a sub replacement of a blue line which is not something that was a thing last year like even with the worst team. Scott i mean it's it's a nightmare and and ryan like what you're alluding to the the mcdavid going up and down the ice and dry sauna going down the ice like that's why they're defensive. Numbers have always been so bad is because they are carrying the puck into end because they have so much speed. They end up behind the net. The rush goes the other way. And who are they facing. It's tyson berry darnell nurse and et cetera et cetera. And so and and they get paid on that way and if if the oilers were going to do an expensive renovation of their blue line this year it would've made sense for them to specifically target players who can defend the rush in in recognition of this is the way that mcdavid dry seidel score points by counterattacking. We need to make sure that when the puck goes the other way we're gonna all side and instead of thinking towards that you know. Now they have. I think demetri. You're you're right to say that at ccn. Keith are going to be the shutdown para because you know we saw nursing berry get fed essentially all the minutes with mcdavid last year like that was like i think berry literally played something like eighty four percent of his minutes with mcdavid or dry side last year i think he scored one point without either of them on the ice so i i think it's unrealistic to suggest that they're going to be used in the ups which means that you end up with duncan keith. Who can't defend this blinders. Savers life anymore. And cody c. c. Who maybe has taken some positive steps in that regard. But i wouldn't really wanna see things going downhill towards him too often. And that's i think a recipe for disaster and like you said with the opportunity cost can you confidently say that. The oilers would are better off right now than they would be. If they're top for was are known nursing youth. Bear and caleb jones and evan bouchard. That's fifty million dollars cheaper. And if you say you know that probably doesn't look too good the blue line there much better racist than fifteen million dollars than on the collection of guys that they got so it is baffling. And i hate that. We have to keep ragging on the oilers. Because like every time i wanted to podcasts. That always lines up with some inexplicable transaction. They've made but right they can on one easy. Yep and the other thing to say is on top of everything. We just said about their defense Other goalies are still mike smith. Go coskun like How you defend that as as a gm where it's like. Oh get look. Nobody's saying mike. Smith didn't have a good season last year. But this guy is what he's thirty nine now. This guy is older than me. No lucky if we if we don't if he doesn't work with him who by the way he signed for two more years We can just always fall back on migo coskun in the guy that everybody in ten is like. Oh this guy's a bomb like you know how bad you have to be for the edmonton media to rightfully land on the idea that you're no good like it's amazing. Yeah it happens. Very rarely very rarely. They're usually like i'm furious. With how badly Ryan nugent hopkins is playing. It's like he's not the problem here. You know that. That's the case. All right well ryan. It's it's your turn give other team or or a theme the on talk about i alluded to it earlier. what should bending doing exactly I you know. I i made. I made a a couple of passing references to it on twitter today in a few nuts fans. were like. we'll look. You can't say the forward groups not better in it's like you got me the defense though. Somehow it's worse. I i don't know arena are are we going to be in your ten of the rebuilt like Come next march or april. Yeah down there. Yeah i mean i thought. They had a series of logical moves in terms of shedding the salary that they did. I like the bed on. Halack was very low risk even though you had a bad year last year sherwin hot backup for that price. Yes.

"Damore being available. He needed to make a coaching change. It wasn't a popular decision right. He makes that coaching change. He looks at a this goaltending acquisition. And he knows that it's probably not gonNA go over overly well in the bigger picture certainly among some media types but what happens rated the Vegas Golden Knights. God forbid knock on Wood if Marc Andre. Fleury gets hurt right so now. You've got that automatic insurance in lender or insurance in Marc Andre Fleury depending on how you WanNa cut this team that has the their positioning to to win a Stanley Cup right. That's literally went there you you you have to know the people that you have and how they're gonNA react. So Marc Andre flurries. No dummy he's like. Hey Robin Lehner is a greater threat to the goal crease. Then Malcolm Sue ban was and I talked to Gerard Gallant. You know in the studio here just before we came up and he thinks Malcolm Subban can still be a really good NHL goal. He likes them a lot and he said he just the opportunity. Wasn't there for him so now they bring in Leonard. Who's got a nine eighteen? Save percentage mark. Andre Fleury's got one of the worst save percentages of a starting goaltender this year in the NHL nine six. Yeah he's not had a great year. Now maybe some of that is totally overworked but not only do they have depth now with lanre. They've got an option or they didn't have an option before right. And so I I like the trade for them because it it can never be flurry and nobody else you've got you've got to have somebody that you can trust and certainly lender is. Is that and right or wrong there. There's been some concern with the injury list of Malcolm Soon Right Up. I mean wrong again. That's the job the general manager. If you're not entirely comfortable with a position you have an opportunity and look mcraven Stan. Bowman the Toronto Maple leafs all had to get very creative in how they move the the pawns on the chessboard. To make the money work and all of that but at the end of the day no doubt Vegas improves. Colorado was in on Kreider. You know to what degree were probably never gonNA know my sense from my rangers sources. They had a first on the table. The packages weren't developing strongly enough. So Jeff Gorton again had to make a call this morning he he gets in touch with Matt Cater and they work that we can talk about the Rangers side in in just a moment. The avs get Vladimir domestic off. Right there were looking for another more significant piece. I would say but JOE SAKIC didn't strike out either. I mean He. He added a piece maybe not as flashy as what else fans might hope for but he added a piece. That's going to provide a little bit of depth. It will Given their injuries. Drake's Nasim Cadre Matt Calvert. Mika rant and I thought they would make another deal they had plenty of cap space and some some really good enticing prospects without blowing up the prospect pool however the deal didn't come together so I found as quiet is they were As as Colorado was I found it. I'M GONNA say disappointing right. That's up to them. I mean they can make. I just thought I thought man. They're they're pretty good team. They don't have Philip Group our right now because he's hurt. You Got Pablo Francis. Yeah that's it. I thought they might add another goal. Tender they added An American League Guy A couple of days ago right but but I thought I thought they might make a bigger splash or you. If you're a player and look I. I might take the position that the wind was just opening for the Colorado album. I'll agree with you. But if you're player in that room right and you've battled hard all year long in your heart. You believe the euro legit Stanley Cup contender. Are you looking at this and go on? I don't give a rat's you know what if the window was just opening? We can't get it. Depends what of player you are. Okay because Maybe if you're one of the top guys you go. Yeah we just what you said. Yeah man we're good and we need another piece in hell but if you're one of the middle six forwards or one of the bottom nine forward say if you're not in the top group or the top group Defenseman. Yeah you want to add a forward you sure as hell don't want it to be in your position because all of a sudden that he might compete for the COP and you might not be hard of it all right. Well we're running down. Some of the biggest of trade deadline date is the two thousand twenty addition of Trade Center presented by Cool Bet Dot. Co We're not done with a West because we've got a tackle the Canadian teams and we can do that going West East wherever you want. Is there another Western team? Saint Louis anything that jumps out at you or should we just get on with the Canadian rundown. No no I I think we. I think the Canadian rotten. You know really the West was pretty quiet. Yeah most of the most of the NFL like that over. The course of the day was in England or trying to grind it out looking for while. This guy must be doing this and that. But don't you think drugs like in the West like okay? You WanNa make a deal but who are you going to trade with leaving the entire Pacific Division Mal? Five of the team's think they're in the race or they are so they're not sellers. No there's only three sellers L. A.'s. Traded most of the guys and there were a couple of coupons that were in play that would have attracted the western audience of general managers. And that's Kreider and that's J. G. Basho and the islanders landed one in the east. And you know we've already talked about Kreider was essentially off the table this morning but the one big western conference team. I'm so impressed with Kenny Holland. Because you know if you divide the individual pieces that he acquired in a fantasy you Tyler and US FROM THE OTTAWA. Senators and last night being Sunday night. Mike Green from the Detroit Red Wings. I you know individually you can pick apart and say I don't know about. This guy was a thirty goal scorer last year. He's not that he's going to win the green jacket you know all of those things where the plus minus but for me the messaging that hall and delivered again to the room and maybe specifically Connor mcdavid Leandra Seidel and the face of the franchise are. We've got your back. We're here to support you. We believe in you and we believe in this team's chance so here this is not this is the best we could do given what was available and. I think he did pretty well. I think he did a terrific job because he kept all of his young defense prospects Samaroo COV is a younger Russian player. Plane over here. In North America Evan. Bouchard was a first rounder. A couple of years ago. They'll Broberg was the first rounder last year. They've got Ethan. Bear and Caleb Jones. Yeah they've got William Legacy and Stillman all of a sudden he's got a whole pile a young defenseman and he didn't give any of those up gave up a second rounder In the next two years for Athens if you tried to have a worse year than Andreas Athen issue right now. You'd have a tough time so thirty goals last year to barely scoring this year. He's minus forty something or other incredibly fast though right really fast. Now where he fits. That'll be up to Dave Tippett and then tyler renaissance has got some scale. He's got fourteen goals in fourteen and a half minutes a night and all so it's not like he's going to go from fourteen and a half minutes to six minutes in Edmonton. Yeah he's going to be in the same ballpark so they can expect some relatively decent production for what costs them fifth round. Pick what I was really impressed with for. A couple of months can't hold has been talking about now. We're going to do what we can. We'll see what the prices are. Kinda slow quietly playing the whole thing and then Bam Bam Bam. He's got three players. Might Green can still play. He's a veteran which on a increasingly inexperienced Edmonson Blue Line. He'll give them a cushioned till Oscar. Cleft BOMB GETS BACK IN A few weeks. I like this for Edmonton. Yeah and they are jam packed in the middle of out Pacific Division. They were the team that helped themselves the most by far in the Pacific Division today. So one of the storylines we were following Sunday night on the eve of trade deadline was the idea that Steve Eisman was going to package both green and seal And as it turns out he ends up getting both and and you know when it was originally tipped off our way it was that yeah there was. There's potentially a bigger deal in play here. Mike Green had waive his no trade clause right to go to the Edmonton oilers. Which always love because I mean of course you know. He's he's into non-playoff environment of now he's going to you know an opportunity to certainly playing the playoffs without question but play with two of the best players in the world. So you know you're getting a motivated my green for sure we often talk about oh the GM knows the player well to waive your no move. Might Green knows can hauling up. He trusts obviously trusts. Yep and the guys aren't Dummies. They can look around and go That team's pretty good or that team doesn't have a chance. And so I'm a puck moving defenseman and I'm thinking every time I get the Puck I'm GonNa put it on twenty nine hundred ninety seven cents it. I'm a really good puck moving defenseman now trying to isn't bad either. You don't even have to. You don't even have to create. You have to move the PUCK. And that's read up ballpark. And then as far as the power play. You'll be the power play quarterback till cleft Baum gets back. Yeah and Edmonton's already got one of the best power plays in a league. Mike Green will help team by the way can haul in pointed out wanted to reward the players for how hard they've worked but also for Dave Tippett in his coaches. What a good job. They've done that. I wanted to give them a little more a few a few more pieces. He told them dimensions. You need some different dimensions to your team and Edmonton did that today. Yeah good for them. We don't have to deal with the Winnipeg jets. We know they added Dylan to Mellon encoding. Yeah I mean. Tell them shoveled. I've got his shopping out of the way early And then we've talked about that already in the past. I mean we have to drill down on the Vancouver canucks. Yeah and and the biggest news coming out of there is Jacob Mark strum out with a knee injury. as as Jim Benning the general manager acknowledging his Media Availability Hill more later this week. There are some who are speculating. That is three to four weeks. I mean you watch this team very closely. They acquire a goaltender. Louis demane right. They've got Thatcher Denko right. Are they okay in goal as long as the Markham mark injury doesn't drift beyond three four weeks? I yes they are. I think that you're damn good. This is so interesting from so many ways so just what was it. Drake's two weeks ago. That marks Germans agent Pat Morris. Said we're going to let the contract talks fail into the summer. Nothing's really going on so mark's terms and unrestricted free agent. They're going to have to make a decision where they're gonNA go with that contract offer in in June late June. So.
