"A fair amount of protection. Why are you holding that seat? Big income. Maradona had to deal with in terms of physicality. It was a different level. Okay, so your Maradona? Yes. Alessandro Maradona or Messi. I hate compare people and footballer from different generation. There's two different sports as Craig say. Two different situations. In the physical situation, when I don't play, you know, lucky that he broke his only one time the leg. It's a different sport. You can't del Piero or Zola. Oh. What you're gonna see?.

Monday Night Football (MM #3904)

"The NASA minute. With Kevin mason. Back in the 1970s, when ABC created Monday Night Football, with Howard Cosell and Don Meredith and Frank Gifford, it was all the rage it was revolutionary. It changed the game of professional football. I talked a couple of months ago where I thought the game of well, not just professional football, but sports broadcasting in general changed thanks to the new mega cast that ran most Mondays on ESPN2. That's Peyton Manning and his brother Eli, basically, while hosting a party, I guess you'd say, with guests popping in and out and kind of talking about the game, we're watching the game, but it's not really the play by play, and I kind of don't know what to do with myself tonight because they're not on. They're not on every game this season. They're not hosting every game, but I found that I watch more Monday Night Football now than I ever have in my entire life. And that includes years where I had to go host Monday Night Football parties when it worked in radio. It's changed the way I watch sports. And again, I've watched more Monday Night Football this year than I have in well forever. I think it's going to change a lot of things. It'd be interesting for me to see NASCAR kind of try the same thing.

"When I started thinking front office, I went all in front office. Including the game's bright stars of today. There was something star Jayson Tatum. Jason, how are you? I'm doing good. How you doing? Behind the scenes stories some coaches and executives things go well. It's like the union did great when things go poorly. The president now CJ's father. And breakdowns from analysts and insiders doesn't seem Philly is in all that much of a rush. Listen to the world by wherever you get your podcast. Some love him. He's a football God..

"I said you had a lovely trip in England. You went up to Manchester to see Manchester City against PSG, Manchester City won. And it was easy. For them, wasn't it? The way flag okay, was easy. It wasn't easy at all. I mean, was they play amazing for my point of view? They're much more opportunity to score. But they didn't score until a huge contract from PSG put one zero for them by pay. I mean, this is at that point I think some sorcery some goth from the past comes at the ATS stadium because, you know, again, we are playing really well. We are having more opportunity and these guys are one up the one zero. So it was kind of this, but then I saw a different kind of team more common than before. And they kept they kept going. And then they score one one. And then interesting the Tino put inside the Maria at some point that I was expecting that it took him out one by Messi on Neymar. And I completely forgot that he can't. So putting those three plastic Maria, even though the Maria is running too much, give a give a big advantage because after that, the third time that they have opportunities clearly opportunities man city's core, because when you give that kind of numbers of players, the team well organized and that knows how to play the ball like man city, you are, that's not a great start. But I think what you know has a moment now that he is trying different things to build up a team. And manage this situation. He was one of his first declaration when it came coaching, you know? I have incredible currency and nobody has talents like myself. Now I need to put these guys together, not only the three in front, also the one that has in the back. I need to put this team displays as a team. That's just another chapter. It's a completely another thing. And this is his challenge now. And he's trying also through this game to understand what could happen at the end of the season. Frank, just going back to the point the boys who are talking about, obviously, the fact that the English seems looking stronger better coached. Do you think this could be a period of dominance for them? Yes, of course, definitely for me. And I think it's a combination of both and as Chris said and check out just earlier the discussion with that. I think the finances are mostly for me explaining why, you know those teams saw a more performant than the others because they can't afford buying players, but also the coaching is very important. On top of the three, and it's a reign of a German coaches where you can add Nigel man as well and buy a Munich. We can be named as one of the best in the world. And that's that can explain what those teams are more performant than the others. You know, Paris and Germany is going to come up with policies and they have to find the right tactic, but they have the money and they have the players. They have to find the right formula to be more performant, but beyond Manchester City, you have a country behind Paris and where you have a country behind Chelsea, you have a billionaire. Liverpool is a real surprise. The deliver police are the real question mark that modern time where you have a normal I would say club with good money, but not enough to normally compete with the others. And that's maybe to go back to the beginning of the discussion. The problem with Juventus, he seems to be to have no money anymore to buy the best player. And that's the thing of Italy. They were in the 90s, the best, you know, winning everything. And then they went down and done and done and descended so big that now, Juventus is starting a new cycle, maybe to reach again the top level. But that's going to be a concern that is going to control for France, you know, where we had a very good team with Marseille, no money.

What Happens in Your House Is More Important Than What Happens in the White House

"My motto has always been what happens in your house is more important than what happens in The White House Let me explain We get obsessed by what's going on Every four years in the presidential election we don't even pay attention to some of the other elections that go on in this country The people people know every minute detail of a presidential election because that's all the media focuses on and we get obsessed with it We watch it like it's ESPN and sports although frankly these days ESPN is more political than cable news We watch it and we get obsessed with every nuance in every little minor detail when a presidential election but most voters can't tell me who their state senator is Oh hell a lot of voters can't tell me who they're governor is And what about your school board members Let me ask you something Over the past year if you have children in the government run schools in this country Who do you think really affected their lives more Donald Trump or Joe Biden as president Or your local school board members I think you know the answer to that question

"For the year later. That's here. They are later that are rather behind the Matthias summer that's and we are going to conversation where European championship counts on or not in the ideally when you vote for the Ballon d'Or. So it's difficult for my point of view, say, one is the best. I believe more in, you know, in the most in the best 11 that is doing on the FIFA that is something that makes more sense because that's a great value. Much better value in what you can say and it become also from the coaches and from the play for the captains for the players, not from journalists. Because this a lot of rumors behind this one door about sponsors and other things. So it's quite we are sometimes. So you bring that much in deep and you bring up what 96 whether as you mentioned, Sam, I want it, then it was Ronaldo then it was Shira and then it was yourselves. Like back then, was it a big deal as big as a deal as it was now? No, I mean, I don't feel bad about that. If you ask me, do you want to win one back in the years? Yes, of course, it's a personal recognition that everybody say that you are the best. Okay, I'm super happy to have it. But I'm not losing my sleep at night because that I never did. I was much more focused on winning titles and for me that's one another reason why I'm happy to promote also what Georgina did beside of what you guys say about the type of computer we're about messy. And 11 doses that both of them especially when those who did two years, unbelievable. Unreal, not an example of unreal. But you need to also to consider when you consider a player, what display means for the team and which other players play with him, how it's changed the team, because to be honest, we were not, as an Italian team, we were not the best to win the Euros. But what happened was something magic and now probably we are not going to the workup because you know what happened. So one player can change the dynamics of all the other players. And this has happened with georginio. It happened also with the Conte from my point of view for some period of the season. And we also always focus on the strikers, how many goals they do and consider now that.

"It was a Dan von Gino, who told his radio employer this week, if you make my team comply with a vaccine mandate, I'm out. I'm gone. I'll leave this company. The ESPN reporter. She's gone. She's out. She quits. Your sports, if you're a sports reporter, ESPN is a dream job. You know what it takes to have to walk away from that job? How about a state trooper in Washington state, 22 years? Out. Because he doesn't want to get the vaccine. So there are people that are pushing back for many for many people. It's a pragmatic thing. You know, you gotta feed your family. No guarantee you're going to get a job if you quit the job you're in. Or get pushed out. Is it evil? To fire a state trooper, over a medicine that he doesn't want to put into his veins? I would argue it is.

Chicago Mayor Lightfoot Posts Maskless Photo at WNBA Game, Violating Indoor Mask Mandates

"You think Lori Lightfoot cares that there's any pushback over her? Celebrating a WNBA, basketball teams win in the middle of a crowd indoors without her mask on. You think she cares? She just wants the police officers in Chicago fired. She wants to fire the cops. For not following the vaccine mandate. But she doesn't have to follow the mask mandate that she imposed. She's Lori Lightfoot. Biden doesn't need to follow the mask mandate that he imposed. He's Joe Biden. That's the point they know. You think Joe Biden doesn't know he's gonna get photographed? He's the president of the United States. You think somebody's gonna take his picture? Is he's walking through a restaurant? Well, of course they are. He doesn't care. Heck, Lori Lightfoot's picture. The one that she's sitting there grinning ear to ear in the crowd full of masked up people, you know why the people in the stands are mashed up 'cause they have to, 'cause that is the rules. But those rules don't apply to her. She's Lori Lightfoot. She's the mayor. His rules for thee not me. And they know it. She posted the picture. She doesn't care? "I caught up on this, Uh 30 for 30, ESPN special at the 1986 Mets, the World Series team. Jim is a big Mets fan producer, Jim and he had told me this is such a great show. You got to watch it. So I sat down for four hours. I couldn't turn away the 1986 Mets, and it reminds me I was a Yankees fan, not a Mets fan, but I was very happy to Mets won the 1986 World Series. I was a kid and I was I was 12. I mean, you know, I'm not thinking about solving the world's problems at 12 years old. But I was happy for them. My mom was a Mets fan and that stunning World Series victory, of course with the Bill Buckner era and it's a real shame, because you know, Bill Buckner is such a great player and became You know, it's infamous for that one plane he shouldn't have. He was such a great player throughout his career. I mean, it was just right. Jim Buckner was a great hitter. I mean, if phenomenal player and it's really a shame that a lot of people just associated with that one moment But I watched that upset victory. The Mets come back in the ninth, and I remember just losing my mind being so happy for my mom and she was screaming, jumping up and down and this guy Phil's house we were at it was a friend of Of hers at the time. But Comey thinking How mad I am now. I don't mean like man at the world are mad at you. I mean mad at what the sports world. Dead. I had such special memories and I was a kid sports. I did I, uh, you know those moments. You you all know. I mean, if your guys ladies out there you were at a game with your dad or your mom or whatever, and home run gets hit in the beard gets thrown in the air and everything like that. People throw and popcorn, peanuts, crackerjacks all over the place. Whatever. Everybody's just going nuts together something about the collective energy of the crowd. Sports brings us that. It's a form of entertainment. You don't see that the movie theater, right? I mean, very rarely in a movie theater. You know, you're not watching, like return to the Jedi, where Luke Skywalker throws Darth Vader over the thing, and everybody gets up in cheers. That just doesn't happen. But it happens in sports, right and those moments I missed them. I've been, uh, stranger to sports for the last few years because of the Wokeness and I just don't want to. It's just not my thing. I just can't take it and I'm really mad. Like many of you are There's a special moments to me. I remember every second of that 1986 Mets World Series. I remember there was sitting at the end of the couch on the right side. And this guy Phil's house watching that And that feeling of elation and joy. Why'd you have to take that from us?

The Zach Wilson Era Is off to a Disastrous Start

"So let's talk about zack wilson. Because you mentioned him and watching him lose twenty five to six at home to the patriots and bill ballot check and bill. Bella check destroys rookie. Quarterback's he consumes them. He picks their bones. That's all stuff that we know already cleans. His teeth with the bones of rookie quarterback is what he does but we saw jets fans alex. You know throwing in the towel and it's week two. And i say that because they were literally throwing souvenir tales from the stands. And zach wilson. The four picks. I'm curious about climbing into your memory bank here because what do you. Alex smith remember about playing the colts back in two thousand and five pablo. I've definitely tried to forget this one all right but we're good. I do remember my first career. Start the number one defense at the time and like the colts were in their heyday. Payton was rolling. But that defenseman dwight free robert matt Bob sanders. i mean it was. It was a joke and yeah. It's all a terrible blur for me. Like four picks i think my rating was it like it was a disaster but i think that was a clear design i was i just turned twenty one. I mean i played only two years in college in a spread system now trying to plan their center. Probably this become this pro quarterback whatever that is and It was not good. I was definitely i. I felt unprepared. And it was a disaster and it showed. You've been a guy who had a four interception game really early after being a top. Pick your the number one overall pick of course. What do you counsel him. Hypothetically what do you stay to him after a game like this if you were to visit him. Alex smith kind of like a ghost of christmas future. What do you. What do you tell a kid who's very talented but also just had a day like this. I think exactly that. I mean i think you gotta go like for me. I just go to the third and fourth picks that he grew and pause before the snap and look look like jack. It's ten to three on this one. It's in the third quarter we got. There's a ton of football left. There's no reason to throw this ball up The way he did and then even the second one in the fourth grade. I mean i think it was thirteen to three. At that point. All of them have gone for chelsea to score two goals in this game and come out as winners when we talk about goals. Lukaku has four goals in full games for chelsea many expect him to be top scorer this season. But did you expect him to hit the ground running like he has craig yeah that actually entails needed. A strike hit the ground running. That's why even out and paid the big bucks could l. afford to you know how slow style to the season. Then be playing catch up. So i expect them to start well. This i mean it was a privilege to be at the game. Just because as you know traveling around the world going to big sporting events that matter in the places where they're happening is incredible and the energy was something but just being in a city like manchester that for all intents and purposes is where the modern world began was also a real privilege. And i just loved being there a really like manchester. Your affection for the city right really comes through and how you write about what is now. The city's most famous export manchester united. This club that has millions and millions of adoring fans all around the planet at this point these people who are these iconic red uniforms and who dream about visiting old trafford stadium with more than one hundred years of history but the real story here is also about the increasingly vast disconnect right between a team that is now a brand and the people of manchester itself so i wanted to see if you could just start by giving us a quick history lesson of how man united which was first formed in eighteen. Seventy eight. how. That club became so important to the city at calls home. You have to understand that. Manchester united was founded in the industrial north working class neighborhoods. People who don't live in them would call them. Slums some people who do have in them would call them slums but like really hardworking neighborhoods north of the city.

U.S. Soccer Offers Men's, Women's Teams Identical Contract Proposals

"Us consideration is offering the women's national team identical terms to the men in terms of contract from the federation But the women who are appealing an equal pay lawsuit. This is a long ongoing situation. Said just a publicity stance what what. What do they mean. What's what's going on. This is a really really complicated. We've mentioned before. Show the should be complicated issues. I what really annoys me is people just without having any understanding to say equal pay equal pay. No because it's a lot more complicated than that. The reason the women said this is a publicity stunt is because the women aren't a very different situation to men when it comes to when it comes to equal pay because for example most of the men get their entire healthcare recovered they play for professional most of them in europe and stuff and they get a lot more benefits from playing for the national club. Which a lot of the women who might play in the wwl less money they don't necessarily received so you can't treat them one hundred percent equally. That's not what the women are asking

Some Players Aren't Convinced by US Soccer's 'Identical' Men's and Women's Contracts

"So. This story arose on tuesday afternoon. That us soccer has offered identical contracts to both the us men and women On the surface you would look at that and say oh well the. Us would have been asking for equal pay and it appears as though they have achieved that they do not see it that way. No they don't they issued a tweet from their. Us national team he eh. So players association us pr stunts and bargaining through. The media will not bring us any closer to a fair agreement. In contrast we're committed to bargaining in good faith to achieve equal pay and the safest working conditions. Possible the proposal. That usf made recently recently to us does neither. Now here's where we have a problem. what i would say is knowledge vacuum. I don't know what was in that proposal. I don't know the ins and outs of the pause. meg From the athletic. Who just great on this she tweets. Us soccer just issued a statement on the us women's national team on us mnt cba's it states that usf has offered identical contract proposals today proposing single cbs structure with revenue sharing usf believes best way to achieve these important goals is by the us women's national team players association on the us ns tpa negotiating together. That's the men's association however this quote marks this is from us soccer if the players association's choose to continue to negotiate separately as they have to date us. Sure, there may always be a play by play guy at professional like what I once was, but sitting there listening to two guys just casually watching a game and then all the plays don't really matter. But what they said mattered more. It may not be patent in Eli which everybody say it works because their brothers and works so well together. But imagine just doing this with all different sports. Having different ways to watch the game. Sure, there may be one traditional play by play going, but imagine being able to do this with a lot of pro players and having visitors come in and out and being a part of the gang. Feel like you're right there with them on the couch or in the bar hanging out and having a good time. That's only ten games this football season on Monday night, but I think it's going to be huge.

"Start with one of the first matches of the day from group. Play manchester united away two young boys and despite having an early lead through cristiano ronaldo goal in the thirteen. Th minute manchester. United fall to one airlangga. Asakusa sent off in first half after that it was pretty much. All the swiss champions who scored twice in the second half their game winner comes off a jesse lynn guard. Air jordan p faulk. The american provides the winner for young voice. Craig to slip it in. There was a story of the game after all. What a way to kind of squander momentum of the weekend you even even lives in amman our expected to still see united stronger than the where against a team who i think of a five games into this season only have eight points setting and fourths or not not the strongest sade and even up to that point eight minutes or so. When he got sent off wasn't a brilliant performance. Yeah rinaldo surprise. Surprise gone go to target and ninety minutes or we lose amman. Not not very good no.

"Some sort of small scale reparations program But i'm less offended by that Because at the end of the day. I want i want to opportunity in the world where we don't get very many of them but that's not for me to say to maria taylor who was clearly offended by and the fact that she was offended and would not accept. Rachel nichols as apology is. What sort of got this machinery. Moving to wear. Now rachel nichols. Isn't there maria taylor. But i mean why nobody should of expected maria taylor to fill the need to be gracious under these circumstances. You know y'all that is extremely well said jal and you know the one thing that i think anyone who's watched maria taylor from the beginning when she was on the sec network that she was a star like she's incredibly charismatic. Smart like one of the people that you've watched on. Espn oh yeah. She's she's really good. Like you want to hear what she has to say. And an interesting part of this new york times story. That came out in july and i'll just read. This paragraph taylor has become increasingly comfortable with expressing her views within the company in the spring she admonished executives for appointing a game coverage team for the ncaa wins final four. The did not include any black women and pressured the company that china robinson as an analyst which they did so she was somebody who is not only coming into our own as an on-air talent. Who's getting noticed. I think by her colleagues and by viewers as somebody who was really great but somebody who and maybe it had to do with the fact that this rachel nichols thing and been happening behind the scenes like for a year before it became public like it seemed like she was on afraid to assert herself and is behind the scenes. Wade advocate for herself and to advocate for other people of color within the company. And that i also think that rachel nichols really good at her job. I liked the jump. I thought it was a really good. Nba show. i enjoyed. I mostly just saw clips of it on youtube and stuff. But i always enjoy like i thought they did a good job with that show but a point that jemele hill made in talking about this diversity hired business and like how it feels to hear that like one thing out it was like it does it does make sense to like have a black woman host the show about the nba. It's like a black predominantly black league and like all the analysts are mostly black on on that show like there's a certain kind of logic to it and so with maria taylor. Now off to nbc. That really hurts. Espn tell her not not be there. And so that. That's just one of the things that stood out for me in this piece apart from the kind of interpersonal drama was like this is a person who is not only Just getting better at her job. It's like this is a really strong voice like in the entire like business and industry of sports now right which which explains why. Nbc basically hired her in a nanosecond and had her at the olympics. Like three days later it was like hi. I'm on the olympics. Now like what. We don't even know like you've got to tokyo already. Burned through holiday seaford for that but yet that was a very smith turnaround right and back to sort of espn's management failure. They're losing to really talented people who were identified with the network for their work and that reflects a real problem with how they seem to deal with personnel issues and the troubles that they appear to have with handling issues of race in the host lineup and reporter lineup. Joel and. I don't know if that that i don't know if that belies what you know about. Espn but certainly outwardly. This feels like espn lawson talented people. Here you know. I mean that's the one thing about it is. Espn loses talented people. But like that is the that is the history of the company. They lose talented people all the time in usually they sorta replaced on bright. Like i mean They've lost you know keith. Olbermann dan patrick craig kilborn going all the way back. There's been people that leave. Espn around rounds of layoffs. Well where where people have have departed right right and they have so many people waiting in the wings like i mentioned cassidy l. dunkin who great times malaika andrews monica mcnutt clinton. Yates all of these other people. That sort of in the pipeline. But i think to your point stuff and espn does have a problem managing these problems but the one thing that espn has working in its favor is that it has so much talent. In comparison to so many other places that you are inevitably going to run into the sort of logjam and there's only so many there's only so many spots for people and so you're inevitably going to lose people. There's going to be conflict over. Who gets what spot and you gotta figure it out. But i mean i think it was so interesting that on the day that rachel nichols. It was announced that she was going to lose her job. It was the new york post reported that they're espn top star. A black star. Stephen a smith essentially wanted to reorganize nba coverage around himself. Michael wilbon magic johnson. Which is like okay. There's a lot of talent over there but also bring back old gang like a bunch of old news right. And i just thought that was really but also that he wants to get rid of max kellerman on i taken like has aspirations to be a you know. Get rid of max kellerman. Four years i think was the line that the reporting us yes. Yeah and there's like some. Espn plus show called stephen as world. Which i have. I have never seen a admittedly but like it does seem like it is stephen as world over there and he is someone who has an extraordinary gift to get people to pay attention to him and to listen to what he has to say. The guy the guy has a has a talent And so you know. Espn is is is in dumb. Like i think they. They realized that he's somebody who attracts eyeballs at a time. When there's more competition both in sports and just from everything else going on in the world like espn needs people who command attention. And and one thing. I mentioned those layoffs stall lake. We might think that dozens upon dozens of people at espn are like more talented than maybe other people. There are other people in the business. But like it's the same with announcers anywhere like how many of these people can really affect the ratings on a game or on a studio show like maybe.

"Revenues for the next x. many years in a likely contract isn't entirely clear and whatever else but this would have meant a cash infusion. For every club it would also meant surrendering control now. All the deal was probably a good deal for a lot of spanish clubs for the biggest spanish clubs like raw madrid and barcelona or dead set against. It wouldn't have been a great deal. So part of conspiracy theory around this is that in laporte guy basically came out and said if we supported this deal we would have been able to keep messy but it would have been a really bad deal for barcelona which is why we're not doing it. It was almost as if he was using messy to justify not signing the deal or to emphasize how terrible the deal was and again. Maybe i'm reading too much into it. But it is a big layer to this because it is the league that sets the salary cap and it is the head of the leaks heaviest airbus who who is very much an adversary of journal porta barcelona so in some ways by by messy leaving. You wonder whether it's going to be like well. Is this really worth three point. Two billion dollars we want to do. We want to take another look at this too. That's a whole other this whole other element to it. So get when. I look at all of this from afar. I mean the math on this still doesn't fully make sense right because yesterday. For instance just to get back to messier point of view here. He was saying that he did everything possible. In order to stay. We know that. Barcelona wanted to keep the greatest player that they've ever had. You would think illegal wants to keep a player that brings all of that attention to their league. And i know that many people thought that because of all of that incentive that somehow some way they'd figure this out and even messy said yesterday quote. I am really sad. Because i didn't want to leave because this is the club. I love that. He says to simple game dog grew. I didn't expect this. I've never lied. I've always been honest and upfront last year. I wanted to leave this year. i did. That's why i am so sad. So why couldn't they just get this figured out. That is the mystery. And that is what please be to believe. So more.

So what was that moment. What was that whole experience like compli. Just hearing you say that. Shut my eyes when you said that and is still deeply emotionally overwhelming to the greatest day of my life to be one of one hundred and sixty two individuals from forty seven countries in a courtroom. Many of whom have escaped civil wars or famine. I'd have undergone journeys that i can't even fathom to be here which put to be candid. And now Army faces 3rd and 10. I don't know if they're gonna put the ball in the air here or not. I was about to ask you read my mind. I have attempted to passes to tend to run it and punch 3rd and 10 from their own 13 meeting to get to the 23 Tyler under center. Fakes. The handoff runs left quarterback keeper he's drilled at the 14 yard line only again, a one he needed 10. An army will be forced to punt for only the third time today. Playing in reports and they're just playing it safe there. They're not a good passing team. You know, Tyler is is not the most accurate order back when it comes to that, and so no reason to do anything foolish risk turning the ball over in this spot on the field. Their defense has played well all season. There's there's no real risk and putting it back in their hands to get a start. Alex Sink Field waits for the punt at midfield for West Virginia, Zaccardo takes the snap boots it away inside his own 56 field. Let's it bounce at the 50. It rolls to the West Virginia 47. You get the tapes mission. Accomplished you bring them back to Bristol. No one has seen the footage for forty years. What does it show well? This was not a highly sophisticated operation. Good evening to you. Everyone from from Jake's field in Lannon Wisconsin. I'm Joe Boyle along with former New York Yankee Star. John Blanchard set to bring you all of the action of tonight's American Slow Pitch Professional Softball League League world series. This was not a place where they should have been showing a nighttime softball game. I mean they brought in lights at the last minute. They barely did the job. It's basically basically a municipal park softball field in the Milwaukee suburbs with no real stands. No real lights. There's nothing professional shnell looking about it except the players who were awesome softball players but it looks like what you might expect on the first night in the first hour of the history of startup. TV network the game itself a clash of the titans. The Milwaukee Schlitz. Yes the Kentucky bourbons. Were these two teams big rivals. These teams hated each other. That's completely genuine talking to these guys even forty years later it. It was clear that they really did not like each other at all on a personal level. It wasn't just friendly rivalry. They resented each other. My a sense was I'm a Schlitz Guy. I was always Schlitz Fan. In this rivalry. The schlitz were the working class. Milwaukee I mean what softball supposed to be about right. It's guys who did this. Because of their love of the sport because represented an opportunity to go have some beers with their buddies and it was about beer a a softball demeaned. Frankly I know the guys who doesn't mix the same weights just something else. These guys kind of fashion themselves as kind of blue grass bourbon royalty like they were the real kings of softball and the Schlitz guys were some kind of pretenders. This was the slow pitch softball world series. How seriously the big ticket? Oh these guys. This is deadly serious. So The star of the Kentucky Bourbons kind of their Babe Ruth. They're they're big personality. Was this Guy Bill Guy and he was one of the big studs in the sport at the time on a national level and this sport meant so much to him. This rivalry meant so much to this championship meant so much. He approached this with true seriousness and commitment to extent that surprised us. I took the game seriously. I prepared myself. I get the right kind of sleep. My wife she'd be beating my chest. One WanNa have sex and I've got to play ball. I gotta play ball later today. That's how intense I was. This was professional right. It's in the title of the series. This was professional. These guys were getting paid big money for the time they took. I wouldn't say inordinate I would say an ordinate amount of pride in this these guys their lives revolved revolved around softball. And this rivalry and the fact. That was a national television albeit available in about twenty thousand homes or thirty thousand homes that first tonight I think raised the stakes for everyone involved. Milwaukee is about to take the field rick reader men who was to the Schlitz what Bill Godley was to the Bourbon. He was one of their best hitters. He was their star Star. Pitcher in Rick Witter goes down in history. I mean maybe maybe this is in quite the equivalent of Roger Bannister. Something like that run in the first four minute mile but he does go down in history. Rick Liederman Rick you personally occupy a very special place in television history for underway with the first pitch to the game. It's a called strike your first pitch in game. One is the first athletic thing anyone ever did on on. ESPN that way I go. Wow look what I started i. Athletics thing is a AH excellent qualifier. I'll put that on a plaque. So what happened in the Game Kentucky. Bourbons won the first game ever on. ESPN this first. Event the Milwaukee Schlitz lost but the bourbons go down in history. GotTa give them credit. They won the first event in the history of Espn always have that but then went on to lose the rest of the series tries to go up the middle white. Herman cut set off throws to first for the out. Lock throw to third day would like not out of their brittle diabetic right now. Very happy thought ball players they had won the world champion of the American Professional Slow Pitch Softball League as a guy. I'm sure you're thrilled as Schlitz guy. I take inordinate pride so ultimately intimately whatever happened to the tape they get it back in the library. The tapes were restored to their rightful place in the veto videotape library. North Campus Bristol Connecticut. And for me I frankly it was an emotional moment but it was really. I think Ken Boudreau. Oh our library for him. It was the culmination the crowning achievement of his career really. I know I'm being a little facetious here at over the top but I think genuinely admits up to the network to get him back because we do care about our history and we celebrate our history at ESPN. This is a are kind of declaration of independence are Magna Carta. What what else? What else can I throw out there? it's big Thanks Jeremy I'll see you in the reliquary. Thank you mean. That's the only story story I want you to know today but we do have a postscript. Ken Boudreau the so called Emperor. "The president is under pressure. Let's talk about the mutiny. Ben, please don't like win it to the playoffs. Yeah. So does he play Chelsea really these your plan your forest plan? Do you wanna play this game? Just absolutely hundred percents. The thing with Karonga Karonga has got up with a the chairman. You know, gonna push Craigslist for the primp because we know that far off it, you know, a window. It's always the same of the championship. Or do you want to go and trying to Chelsea over? So there's all these in a work is this. But I'm sure that the lots of forest looking at team shit. They wanna play here's the difference. Now, we're in a whole world have a nest nest business of being the sacking game. Now, I don't know what the starts late compared to for fifty years ago. But I'm sure the telenovela, no coaches is way more so. On the stand. I don't understand this. I can understand the pressure because if four is a good run finish midtable. The chances are you'll get booted out. And so as difficult for for some of the modern just hold on one thing has money. Yeah. Money, and so the the owners are driven by and the coach on the pressure on all the sentiment for the FA Cup. Only comes into some of them. When I go back to my point when you can smell it smell your clothes for them at the moment fell unfortunate for them for guys that million miles away from and so they don't take series as is. Maybe personally, I would like them to do. So a hope I'm wrong. But I think it's been a little bit of a momentum swing turtle even players game with Chelsea folders. Go back to the momentum thing if you want to make a run in the championship to the playoffs Bates. What's no control c the comb going to do any harm you again next week against shape? United just jokes. What about good about? Well, what about just w country right fronts doing a hell of a job? This is everybody bombing flying. So does he go in and turn say them to keep that momentum? You know, we're flying the lead. We can do this. All this. We've got some big going does he let this go? And you know, the coaches had these trying to work same making plenty of changes who you can rely on plants from young kids. So fascinating games. You've here. Right. We I mean before meal viciously we still because I because those old skill where fake love them. Yeah. Every Cup was one thing for me. Misfield get into the squad doesn't they say you see the funds you drive up to the grounds? You go to the runs their Cup to this small runs pot people. It's just all about fear used a couple of coaches around the table. Now, you complete the scenario. They'll rang all the excuses to you. Well, you know, so and so coming up, and I've got so and so and he's and he's engine. So we're giving it with telling you from one side. But you hear the modern manager on the pressure job is going to give you a completely different scenario. Well, the good thing if you're in the US is I mentioned all these games available on ESPN, plus someone that means obviously they upset switch on one game to another on that great coverage will be throughout the thank you very much voice. "So the whole excitement around as you can feel it from the funds, you can feel it an address in room, and you can send because you know, you're not gonna win the league. We were we think the best finish for six ninety seven. When we go to the fight them. So we're not gonna win the league. So what's the next best thing for all of a sudden takes on another life of its own of is is important is what it is. Well done if it was as I know it was the coverage from the Press TV as well. Because I think it was on terrestrial BBC. Yeah. As you as you go closer to the final. It was it was up salute. Those the only games semifinal, for example. The only games they were talking about that was you know, we we go to villa with place city in the semifinal final eight. We just got done send in the league. It's the fed round poed costume from stories. Stories what I'm saying. You know, you talking about the passion of the games of the ethical on. What what it meant to well play. I'm as players progress. Founds. We don't in this file on an extra time. That's a tough onto swallow. You mentioned you mentioned bonnet. And obviously the fact that you got in by replay. And even when you went to the task. Of course, a lot of people calling replace to be abolished and just simplify things clear up the calendar. Is that something you agree with? Yeah. Yeah. In this panel issue of the night. I'm a big fan of it. In in the early roads. When when when you go the lights of these lowly teams, some don't leads wants absolutely the money for the next five years ten years, you know, give them replays. I'm Vic as you as you progress into the final say, maybe for the fifth round or something like that. Then go straight depends because it really is a left little of the club. If you can get Chelsea a bonnet, Chelsea, you know, some only see. Yeah. Second by calm all creeks early region. So we comply Stanford bridge within about the dole that will. Yeah. So it's important for the lower league teams what you're saying. I can see what you're saying. There's a way where it was a runs came on one leg game. You just fix it. Because I have other lower league team hosted well with that noble. I understand up. But then you've got for the little league teams necessarily. I'm I'm a little bit stuck with us is because I understand all the games at the bigger clubs are planning on plan for. But then if you keep mentioning sets, it could be bombed that if you go to mind United in somehow drag droll, and it doesn't help very often. But my, and then you get them to your place a double whammy for you one you players get deployed in the biggest arena, one of the biggest arenas in the world to the TV commerce coming planet home, you've setting by Jerry, no, not only is the get receipts going to be through the roof for this club. There's probably about one hundred thousand plus and TV money coming along. So I think it's difficult to take replays of the whole compensation. But certainly as something that I know they're going to be going to be looking at buff. I was playing for smaller club. I wouldn't want it to be a one off. I'd one lesson playing against the teams all your career choice to have to live approval of whoever has I think I'd be quite happy with all right, boys. That's the end of this. Composites thing with us because the third part of the house we looking ahead to some of those ties in this third round. Welcome into the fun of ESPN AFC that FA podcast.
