"Went up to peter erskine head of the center for mind land rehabilitation sets off on a field trip. He takes a gun with him. An x ray gun with a small. Lcd screen this is a expert. Fluorescence spectrometer geologists use them to find mineral deposits. Its initial screening tool. And you've got three leaves next to it on the bench here. Why would you point this x ray gun at some leaves. Because we're interested in the elements inside the lease and so these three species in front of us include two species which manganese harper accumulators and one species. Which is a nickel harper accumulate. Harper accumulated is a plant. That accumulates a mineral tickly trace elements. At least a ten fold increase upon. What a norplant does so. When we fire the gun we can see the very high concentrations of those particular minerals. Dr eskin believes these hyper accumulator. Plots could be used to farm metals. Which is why he takes his gun out into the field. He points it. At least it's like the ones in front of us to find species that absorb unusually high levels of metals from the soil. Well the gun works pretty much like any gun. You pull the trigger and it fires. And in this case it was an x ray and the x ray interact with the elements within the leaf and that fluorescent energy is detected by detector within the gun so as i place the gun over the top of the leaf we will start to see flourescence of the different elements that are in this in this case. This is kodiak which is a south african species. A nickel is around seventeen hundred parts per million so it is a nickel harp became will as the threshold behind doctor erskine a draws of neatly filed plot samples from australia and the pacific. He and his colleagues have been scouring the region for new species those that can tolerate high levels of metals and the could be used in fighter mining or mining with plots

"Podcast every day on the odyssey apple. Wherever you get podcasts. As of this morning right now have a new program. Director is the first time that this has happened since nineteen ninety. Three at wfan. So excuse us for mega big deal out of it. That's why there was balloons and a dedication mark chernoff and that's why we're having this man in the studio right now on. Its first day because this is like jarring to us that there is a new director. Wfan but we are thrilled to have him. It's spike eskin form of wip in philadelphia. Who is now wfan's program director along with cbssportradio spike. Welcome how do you feel man. Come on joe. For christ's sakes put his microphone on. Welcome to turn on the radio six. Am and just hear. How mark would have been here already right about three hours later. I mean we have meat. I these matt you let me know for sure. I understood who was boss right away. So i don't know about that. Congratulations thanks yeah. It's a really really exciting. At the first time it came up here a few weeks ago. I was getting on the subway to come here and it was. You know got into twenty five years ago and the goal is always to get here and it didn't really click until i was on the subway going to work at wfan so it's watching a grandmother get kicked in the face right. I finally made it. This awesome so what do you do we were. We were talking amongst ourselves here. The just walk right into the office. Plop your stuff down just the way that it works. Is that how you go about this. It was locked a key. And that's what authority gave you a key. last week. he left it for chris. I see the architect guy was running the station cluster. Yeah it was a big part of hiring you to bring you here so he has. You finally had the key office. Here's what i do i go. I think everything out everything i did. This when i got mike francesa's office. Yeah and i took everything out. And i just i made it my place. You gotta make it your place. Well there's nothing. I understand that i agree. There's nothing in there. Mark wasn't a decorator. He was a lot of things right. Great guy amazing program director. You don't walk in there and say decorator so it's pretty bare as it is i. I just take everything. I think that the desk out everything. Everything's out you need all new stuff. That's what you have to do is say no question about it. I mean there was some good stuff. It was a nice run that happened in their. The chernoff run. You don't want to get rid of the spike run. Now now i get rid of all of it but then he good. He sounds like he's needy and needed new desk getting couch. He's the leader of this radio station. Now i wouldn't mind a new desk. Who knows on that desk guys like you like you love the fact that you have this job. This has been your lifelong dream. But now you also have to remember. You're an executive and you have needs and you have requirement and you have the right to ask for what you want. That's part of. I'm sure that's where chris olivera would love absolutely and actually think shows leadership going into olives office demanding new furniture support. If i've boomer and geo marsha over there right never leave us alone will support exactly all kidding aside the the the thing that you are most excited about in the thing that you think is going to be your biggest challenge. What's the thing you most excited about. First cleaning up the cigarettes and the balloons you know frigerator talking about that. We have some really rank. Refrigerators that need add a really serious situation thing. I'm most excited about. I've really the hosts honestly like getting to be getting to work with you guys. And i'm not an asking but it it really is like this is the is the mecca i mean. This is where sports radio was born. Wip i love. And i have great respect but there were caught below those guys. They're clear. I i know to be a part of this is to be a part of this. What you do is is amazing. Like i i. I don't know that. That is what i like doing even if it wasn't my job that's what i would do so getting to do with you is is awesome. Just warn us so just about some of the personalities that work around here. I kind of got a good flow of everybody. Geos the guy that gets all the scotto body. Just scotto by the you need you. Just go to him. he'll give it to you. Maybe not. I'll tell you go to the with the skull. Just telling him that if he needed scuttle but he could go to you and the guys in the afternoon. The bigger pain in the butt is not who you think it is. I'm just gonna leave it at that. It's not who you think. it is. Okay i there. There's one of the two is really difficult to deal with very inflexible. I'm going to tell you who it is. I know has that reputation off all right very good. What do you think's going to be your biggest challenge. Well it's new york and not philly like philly is eagles seventy five percent of the time and then the other twenty five percent of the time is eagles so there's nine teams here and getting to just learn everything that i don't know i mean there's a phillies close to new york and i'm familiar with everything here but getting to to know what i what i don't know about the teams and the culture and you know the avert the country by the way you're mentioning scuttle bug how the scuttle bug as you're saying that i'm getting texted scuttle but yes and there is a giant cockroach in the newsroom right now and this is not a joke as a picture. We can hear the commotion. You can hear the commotion out there so this is your first task. We got rid of the cigarette this morning. So you don't have to deal with that but if you'd like to go and get the cockroach our you with bugs spike will not. My wife is terrified of spiders. Show hide in the corner. So i can kill bugs. So that's what it looks like. That's the cockroach out there like your standard issue. There's a reason why there's a cockroach is as one of the requirements should be anybody that works in a studio takes a shower before they join commentator. You saying that this morning all i could think was bit. There's no way it smells. And i walked in. And it does sort Hockey locker rooms of the worst. Yes absolutely retracting bugs now not only bugs cockroach which is pretty bad all right so go handle that as my goodness. That's not a good situation. Faa this this market one. We've got cockroaches that are well identity. Welcome thank you congrats. And we've meeting or you have the you'd need something today. Your what is going on your thing. You do a meeting thing. Don't mean no no. No no no i. It's but i so that's a good thing he goes. What are you guys do. That's awesome because normally like a new guy would come into listen. We're doing this every thursday. We're doing this. Every tuesday was worried about that. No that's not. How am okay the way we work at. If you need something you let us know perfect. And that's where available. Yeah the boston needs us. Where we're there are door's always open spike. You're here yeah. Right door's always is it. Okay perfect all right. Spike grass man. Enjoy first day for our new program left the balloons in for him so he could have that backdrop on cbs sports there. It looks wonderful. Look.

What what do you hope that. The raiders get from From this book this adventure with markelle thorn. Well first place. I hope they entertained. Joy the the character and the scene setting i. If is a mystery though. There is a a murderer on the first page which is not really assault until almost the last page as oh. I think people should get some pleasure from trying to second. Guess the mystery. There's a i think people should get enjoy the action. And i hope some of the twists and turns of the plot but also just again will feel of the city of washington I think all many of the scenes are based on places. I've been and visited and Officers i've done work in So I tried to get without making it didactic. Pedantic a little sensor what life is like professionally and city like washington and that's great so high listeners. We're going to have a treat here because when we get finished in just a few seconds here we're going to are going to jump over to our patriot platform we're gonna we're gonna talk about thriller writing. We can talk a little bit more about His writing path and he's got. He's got some tips on how to write a thriller because he He kind of had to walk through that process himself to to put together. "A lot of abuse of power. You know that goes on to some extent in this book. And i'm wondering thank you. You've seen some of that firsthand and that helped you think through this this plot here. Yes this was rather extreme versions of what i observe but people who are at high power positions. Don't get there by being Shrinking violets they usually highly aggressive highly ambitious men and women and they are willing to cut corners and do what they have to do and they often eventually go beyond just the scope of their official job titles it becomes a personal them. And if people a don't want to generalize most people do their job and then the end of the day go home and have a drink with their wife or husband but there are people who become absolutely absorbed with the Competition and people in high positions in in the government and in industry and in other areas are highly competitive evil. Who'd who take their work home with them to speak and will do not. We'll do what they have to do to Judge achieve their ends and often forget that they are in this case public servants but The the the the objectors become personal with them and that can become quite dangerous. Yeah let's do this little bit. You're riding life before we finish up today As we said you've read plays Before that you a diplomat for that somewhere along the way you were a lawyer not sure how much she used the law in your in your lifetime. You maybe talk about that. But but here's my question that is i think. I know that From the dialogue. That i see in this book which was was crisp and informative and lots of fun. That play riding probably helped you to some extent in the dialogue part of this book. Definitely as you mentioned before before. I ever started writing long-term form fiction iro plays and i found myself very comfortable and writing dialogue..

"Of that costs money for which he is not paid enough on his top salary so he has gotten into the habit of doing work on the side and the work is not always strictly legal. He doesn't break the law. He doesn't do any violence to anybody. Has a very strong code of honor himself but he needs the money particularly to by the fine art that has squirreled away in one of his rooms so he works for some organizations and for some people who are not at not at all savory and in some cases not at all legal He's very walks a very fine line as but he gets but he needs that cash and addition to that as i say he he doesn't like violence and he tries to get out of violence situations which he finds himself in quite often by by using his is imagination and wits rather than using of a gun and shooting his way out occasionally that has to happen because he is involved with some very dangerous people particularly in his off hours work but he'll go to a great extent do Out think is opposition and defeat them through his cleverness and so that makes him very odd Dejected he also as you indicated in your question he has a problem with authority has always had. It does not take rules lightly. He works around them or is prepared to break them if necessary which it makes him very controversial within a large organization such as the metropolitan police department in washington but he is so successful that his his superiors get away with this so he doesn't get into too serious trouble. We've created a very interesting character. And i was thinking a little bit about characters read in the past Cloth customer wrote character. Dirk pitt who had First underwater adventures. But i think he was stationed somewhere close to say but he had a collection of vintage automobiles. So you got this one side. Who's who's fighting crime and the other side whose collected art so it's nice to have to have two sides to it and it's nice that you've created this character because i assumed the next was going to be a continuation of markelle thorns. That's correct yes. An example which i've completed in which will be published next year sometime. is featuring marco's aren't in a slightly different environment. Not dealing with the white house but dealing with A visiting Hetero stayed marcos earn has been assigned by the secretary of state the united states secretary of state a bodyguard and provide a security For this beautiful woman for montenegro was one in washington and who is the target of ns sassy nation different world but still washington washington. I also very well in this book here. The reflecting pool you know thanks escalate after the initial Murder and zone is up against a loss of different departments including the white house. And he's he he becomes not just The hunter but the hunted as you say dry. Which makes it kind of interesting in any. And i'm reading along. I'm trying to figure out how how's he going to solve this You know jammies gotten himself into and so that kept the pages turning to A little bit one thing about team and then a question about writing. I think about the girl with the blue eyes. she's dead a medic announces getting to her feet. I call it at zero seven. Twenty two she's all yours deductive. She's dressed in a pantsuit in white blouses brown hair cut short and whereas what looks like a watch on her left wrist watch with no numbers she wears jewelry and has no wallet or purse or cell phone. She has no shoes. I call for the medical examiner staff. Rhyme seem decks and for uniforms to secure the area. Then walk along the edge of the pool looking for signs of what might have happened during the night. I kneel down to examine faint marks on the edge. We'll take it from here. A loud voice announces over my shoulder. A toll man and a police uniform stands above me. Who are you ask as. I get to my feet and face him. Captain darryl fletcher united states park. Let's talk about him as a as a character for just a minute because he is unique and in some respects he is he doesn't he doesn't I guess back down to other agencies. He doesn't back down to other authorities. He doesn't carry a gun all the time unless he knows he's going to have to use one but he's got this other side to as well. I was just wondering what went into the creation of this character. Well he does have another side even though he's extremely good at his job as a home aside detective and he closes many cases he has another life is really interested in fine art and he has a private collection very private collection in his home. "It visited often think the rivals go is a public not inherently connected to the narrative but the the murder in the reflecting pool is and i wanted to i think the artists who produce that did a various job Wanted to establish that there was a threat endanger in this Otherwise rather idyllic Scene and i the reflecting pool itself I see as a reflection of washington. As i mentioned before. Washington of the of the monuments notably the washington monument which you see but also the affecting the the the danger and violence of the city. So it's really a captivating. Cover you beyond perfect for thriller and this place where the victim is found in this opening scene. The reflecting pool is a very public place. Say recognizable in dc. Why put it in such a public spot. Why and the you know the narrative well good question. They they the killers in this case. We're hoping that it would not be identified as a murderer. They wanted to the victim. Who was a young woman who has a secret service agent. On the presidential protection detail is found drown in the reflecting pool and the hope of the killers it would be dismissed as as a terrible and tragic accident. But thanks to the Investigation another the character. He soon discovers not an accident at all but a a murder. But that was that was a plot that wrong for the for the perpetrators and so on a just quickly on the bottle here. The reflecting pool at first glance you think okay. The title of the book is reflecting pool. You know that the it's it's not cars early in the book where this body is found in the reflecting pool. But i'm wondering because author spent a lot of time thinking about titles. Did you have some double meaning going on there. Because the protagonist market thorne has passed. I'm wondering if it's being kind of reflected back at him. Well that certain point he is does have he has a past. He is a home aside detective in a very good one. But he has a real eccentricities For one thing he does not like guns and there's a reason for that role several reasons but as he as a young man as a teenager actually killed a man Using a gun and he never wants to go through that again head..

"I do have one question related to that when you sorta retired from the foreign service Or death medical. And you're thinking about what you wanted to do or you wrote place had published play and then you decided after doing that which i don't think had a lot of gunfire in a single shot was fired russia. And then you sat. I'm going to be a thriller writer. What what what. Flip for you. Well i am not sure i can actually answer that. I've always wanted to write no way that i was in college. I had. I had fantasies writing things that i think i was mostly interested in science fiction. I'm if nothing if not broadminded. In terms of the the genres that i work in. I when i got was got into the foreign service. My time was completely absorbed with work and so i didn't have a chance to do anything but they came too close to retirement age and i thought okay. I'm not going to stop anything. I'm just going to continue to do some active. The active and i thought. I'd like to try my hand to play writing when i was in college and before that i used to go to the theater lock. I really loved the theater now. I thought i would enjoy doing that. So i took classes. I went to a lot of theater and then started writing. Well remember plays. And then. I got several of them. Were produced locally here in washington and then eventually in new york and one of them has been producing in europe including in in siberia of all places and so it was sort of a dream of mine but as i went along i thought well i don't. I didn't feel restricted by the format of the theater. But i thought. I'd like to expand on that. And i like to do long form fiction writing and i decided maybe arbitrarily that i do a or narrative thriller genre which i had not read very much house. I've read a lot of mysteries and Various fiction of that and can continue to do so. I'm not sure why. I picked the thriller genre accepted i. I knew i wanted to have a narrative which was very fast. Paced that keeps going The grabs the reader and Entertains him or her and a villa. John laura natural. I wasn't likely to write a romance novel. I know nothing about them. And i don't Really didn't want to do young adult novels so my choices were limited but i. I really enjoyed I so i started to write. And i wrote several different thriller novels. All with this may say main character. And then i think i hit one in the reflecting pool which really went Novell that with me and with others. And so i went from there s great. Yeah it's and you do. It is a fast paced book. It has a page turner which is nice. It's it's something you can escape and like think so. Yeah so so before you have a here which you're gonna read from the opening of the book. I wanna talk about the book cover and the title just a minute The book cover Talk about this because You know our listeners can't say they'll say it in the show notes of course i'll put it there but This this is a The colors it could be very early morning or early evening with the sun. "It's nice though that you're not hanging out with murders asan's and yeah and you live in washington. Dc which is where. The novel is set So nice setting for your first novel. Because i'm sure you're able to draw on your experiences. Having lived there about the sights and the sounds of the city absolutely. This is my hometown. I wasn't born here. But i've lived most of my life which is pretty long now here in washington dc. I've also when i was in the foreign service. Broad i know other world capitals pretty well berlin and paris and variety of of foreign capitals but washington is my base and i know quite well and wanted to draw on the kind of monumental aspects of washington the the things that people tourist or example. Who come here used to come here before. The pet panic Let's see the big the the museums. The big government buildings the mall where the initial crime is set. And but there's also another washington of which i know more indirectly not much personal experience which is a time a place of of crime Washington has been from time to time afflicted by grand violence drugs guns and it was once growled the murder capital of the united states which probably exaggeration but it was a very dangerous down. And i read the papers carefully. Which i do. Murders mostly gang warfare murders. Every day of the week and i wanted to drawn that to reflect the two sides of washington the official side the government and the The real world a lot of people who are living in in in if not in actual poverty close to it and in the areas of town which are afflicted by gang shootings almost on a daily basis. So i felt that there were. I wanted to see how those two sides reflected one another in a sense. The people i know and worked with didn't carry guns and shoot each other and as part of these turf war competitions must have thought about it but they It's it's a background noise. Would you live here in washington. And i wanted to have that Reflected extent today can now understood the work. I did in the The story i told in the novel. The reflecting pool is is fantasy. The the drug dealers the White supremacists of militia all of that based on my imagination. But it's a part of the real world here in washington and i thought people should know about that. That's great and so we're gonna talk more on the patriots channel about thriller writing and how you got there..

"Well i must some subconscious level and must inform everything. I do i love. The reflecting pool itself takes place in washington so it doesn't directly concern international Events or a germany or The cold war but have my in the state department was here in washington and i observed endure departmental dogfights and competition and for all clients and some very strong and dangerous people not physically dangerous politically dangerous people competing for power and for control and i ju- on that in a very general way in the reflecting pool where you see the main character marco zoran having to deal with a whole variety of a us government agencies. Some of which are cooperative. Most of which are not cooperative and have their own agenda so he has to work around that but he's used to that and he's very good Intimidating of people in power. So in that sense my background it does Inflict my work My writing with fiction work the next novel which i just completed it much more involved with diplomacy and and this is here in washington but they all go competition among Various power groups and marco's earned. My main character does not Deal well with authority. He doesn't deal l. a. rules and so he finds himself in a competitive situation wherever he goes and he usually comes out ahead. So that's basically my my answer to your question so you never carried a gun right so that does offer an explanation. You mentioned the inner departmental dogfights you to do a good job of of bringing that into this book. The reflecting pool and It does it does increase the the tension crates conflict when you know people supposedly on the same side. That is the side of trying to you. Know bring down crime or actually competing with each other toward those ends. Did you actually see that happening. As part of your work actual crimes in the sense that people are getting murdered and around me but very definitely The the the agencies departments said they represent have their own agenda and they are willing to ride over people any competition who shows any form of weakness My main character just no weakness and so he's able to defeat them but I have to admit i. My life has been fairly sheltered in the sense. I don't actually know any violent criminals murderers or assassins of as as i do pick them in the novel. But i've just extrapolated from i observation of Turf wars in washington and in this case the wars lead all the way to the top to the does the white house itself..

Germany Is Next In Line For Political Upheaval

"Germany next in line for political upheaval. The future of the country's ruling coalition is in doubt after the newly elected leaders of the Social Democrats amounted fresh concessions from. I'm Angela Merkel's party. It raises the prospect that Koby Elections in Germany and twenty twenty can learn more now from Stephanie. Bolson correspondent for the German newspaper Duvets. I'm I'm Stephanie. Thank you for joining US little more about these new leaders of the SPD. What he's they want? Well what is very interesting about these new leaders that it Me personally will not be an exception saying that. I have hockey ever heard the names before. So it's not about a eskin ZENDA SASKIA ask Simply a cold and they They came out of the blue so there was a very long process in among the membership to see who would now follow analyst. She was the leader of the mind was very unpopular and actually unto Saturday evening. Everybody was thinking that it would be That the new leader would be We'll have shorts the incumbent Finance Minister and then these two came kind out of the blue and and then won the race. Why do you think that happened? If there was an expectation that it will be a relatively well known relatively mainstream within the Party auty candidate why. Why is this happened If you look at the polls in the membership of the SPD. The majority of membership wants Serb leadership. It's now for the first time dual so it's woman and a man who are more or less leaning the SPD. A membership is very very unhappy about the the costs that the party has gone for many many years they have been in a coalition with a CD you Since two thousand seventeen were inequality before so we have actually seen almost ten years of a coalition between the two big parties and memberships things that Angela Merkel has basically Louis Take away the whole profile of the PD. So all the left leaning politics like minimum wage Gay Marriage image all these things socially progressive but also economically progressive has been Well to the benefit of Mackerel and the junior partner now who the. SPD's has been such a long time has really lost profane and it was every election. Pilings have gone down. Isn't it always as the way though in coalitions that the junior partner doesn't get much of what they want. Yes it is very much a movie scene that in Britain for example with a coalition between the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats between twenty and twenty fifteen a lot of the policies were implemented. Were actually ideas by Liberal Democrats but the Conservatives as the biggest party will always very successful to say. Hey that was our success and the same has been happening in Germany the problem for the SPD the is though they if they even now set. Okay we are going to leave the government coalition that will probably not be paid back At the next election because is the sense in Germany that you have been voted in. You have agreed to a coalition. You have to take the responsibility if you're now going going away just because of say kind of selfish party folk was reasons. This is a this is unacceptable and therefore they are between rocking hot place Whether they stay in the coalition which is bad or they leave the coalition which might be even worse. The Christian Democrats have been rebuffing these coals to renegotiate negotiate but in the end if they want to avoid elections next year they're going to have to give in on something they might give into something. I mean we really now in the in the early hours they say nothing room for maneuver and Knowing Angela Merkel she will try to find a way that they may be renegotiate associated some social policies some tax policies that The new as Padilla ship can can get out of this face saving. But as I said before I don't think it's a good option for the SP to cause breakdown of the coalition German business community has reacted already. This morning has set The Cook what isn't government should stop navel-gazing and look at the challenges of the future like digital modernism modernizing gem in digital he'll systems Looking for more progressively into climate change or climate protection and not being so self-focused. So I think both parties have an interest to solve their Their their frustrations and that they are the rows with each other because they will both suffer the pulse. Angela Merkel has already said that you weren't contest the next federal election though it sounds like at this rate had time office maybe ending little sooner than we may have thought it might be the case again if you I think it's something like seventy five percent of the German public says they do not want the coalition to To to end they wanted to continue until September. Twenty twenty one when there is the next regular election federal election and also the WHO does. It's not have any well not strong interest in a in early poll nutty election because they have problems with to decide who they actually really want to run as the successor of America. So they have unagreed come cannonball. WHO's the common defense secretary? And she's also the leader of the city but she's highly unpopular. Actually only two weeks ago. There was a party conference by the CD where she offered to resignation. Because the tensions are so high in the city you so the the city was not ready either to fight a election campaign and therefore I think at the end of the day none of the two big parties has any interest to to eleven addiction. The only party. That hasn't a party that has can have a reason to go funny action at the Greens because the Green Party has the best pulse for a very long time. We were discussing earlier in the program the change in leadership in the F. D. Party as well and you would have thought that those in the political mainstream wouldn't you wanted to create uncertainty in the risk of election at a time when the FDA is trying to build support. Well the I if t is certainly Louis very popular and especially in East Germany but the decision The new leadership now off the AFDC which is even more right-wing sinophobic Lebed leadership. The I mean that remains to be seen how many people continue voting for the AFDC having in mind that the leaders are well. Outspoken Anti antisemites. SINOPHOBIC I think it's because until now the AFC also got a lot of protests voters and. I think those people will think twice if they would want Want to vote for this kind of Party A. Stephanie Balsam. Thank you very much

"Never madam I've never talked to him I'll I am I'm more these observers from the outside this is he's a bit of an odd duck as a body builder he's fit you know look good in the unity she said something about lubricants on the that that's even attached to the story of the giants trying to manage Howard Eskin piece from the what W. and it can take up the opening press coverage in Philly we've put that if you tell yeah show yeah yeah and is that how classic Howard Eskin voice to that Philly accent you know they've just such a unique accent the Philly accent but yeah Polly welcome to tell his your guy body we're gonna be talking to we're gonna be in Scott still weather where you sit next to him down there in the we're gonna be gazing out at Scott still stadium next to Gabe Kapler and in a couple short months or I'm get maybe forget about gays not the window arms gazing at his physique based on the body building background we're dealing with here I'm wondering if like hot is only gets him place like people like he walks in a room and gas like far like damn neck as black as rip let's hire of what time you know this much me not to be a rocket scientist but like anybody who has that kind of busy Cory's into body building that's a time that's it that you that now requires commitment yeah dedication discipline and Murph most of all time there's been time in the weight room like firing out those sets their him right you didn't just fall off the back of a truck with that physique team is in the early he was talking about I got a fine to Myron at halftime will he be firing out sensor in a like an extra inning game will see one one of the weird stories that I read about capital last night was a and and granted there's so many weird things attaching Terry Francona son Nick Francona had a really big beef with him Sports Illustrated wrote about it last year what was that the nature that or at the he did the baseball a little complex okay forget it yeah Nick Franklin and come back from serving in Afghanistan and there was some mention of PTSD and then Kapler was like Katie maybe you should work here but maybe you should I love you buddy should be here in a different kind of thought captured in support of it but anyway then Nick Francona went to the Mets accuse Major League Baseball not supporting veterans the right way in that Memorial Day hats were phony and all that stuff wow super complex but it with the point was the anecdote was was when Nick Francona was it be interviewing with Gabe Kapler to join the Dodger minor league development system Campbell said let's do the interview at the GM there it is squats and curls that once again back to my original point yeah you know you can talk to me and my natural habitat and domain which is the way room listen we got a look giant fans I know a lot of people are not happy about this is it's it's interesting that they're such a backlash already like really strike immediately is strong and quick like they're not we say I'm not there I'm not like violently opposed I'm curious in a little baffled as to why this was the guy carries on that too I mean for Hon can hopefully shed some light on that we talked to a buy spot must come into wins but I don't know like a giant fans we got to give this guy a chance I mean I take it you got to give this guy a chance because this is the this is the direction OR some people have said they will never go they they're not going they're done the done with the team right writing those on social media and that's a pretty bold statement I like baseball like hot dogs you know well I mean a crab sandwich a twenty percent off you know this guy be able to get this thing back on track in some ways you can see the fans come back you might as well give him a chance because this is the hand we've been dealt as as fans and and the giants community and everything else the giants of deal with the hand that I'm I'm trying to handle the heat of the day yeah hand I've been to no I think that's totally because I mean this is not by design which I'm fans seem to have wanted but this is what it is yeah you got to give me a chance and and you're gonna have to try to get on board with this order I'll take the other route which I do know people being that extreme they were not going well you can't social media and forcing mind body gel the great Bruce Jenkins he always nails it for me he writes we he any word about everything the signing of the **** the lubricant etcetera lubricating right we now have the don we hear it is we have now the don a new era of giants baseball the sun has risen with the threat of Tempest let us braced against the future and hope for pleasant time what's about that's pretty much it rats about is funny deal laughs when you're going to you and kick in you had the scoop so the little bird source told me this is it and when I say I don't think I like is that we'll get used to it yeah and so go ahead give us your complaint Sir you're feeling now I'm in kind of poly there now he's here we have to see you know we got and what we're going to send them money and we want to try to do well Riley won't improve the roster one all this so we just hope for the best at this point last year we think the cap or higher well he's here hoping for the best what am I right yeah I know I know but I was into shock when I saw the news it is official because that's when I but it's you you're the one that told us a couple weeks ago yes this you guys had did either of you see anything again I didn't but did either of you see anything on social media where is there any percentages giant fans to say yes yeah good yeah there's no but majority I'd say is Miami Jordy's pretty nice trying to be rational like Hey you know you know I'm gonna be patient whatever it now there's really nothing to hang your hat on for him like great like he has never won anything he's never been of champion manager you know he he went eighty and eighty one and eighty what it would be two games under fire yeah yeah yeah in eighty three at the one that's disturbing hers to September both of his team's flamed out in September they both had they collapsed in September both times now foreign will tell you any tell if you go back and read the quotes from when the day after both she retired and by the way how far away do we seem from that last day of the season all of those doors were open I mean do bring me back or crying.

"Business. Gary and Larry continue on. Sports. Again, top of the hour. The latest believe what? Put out now. Credited guys in the media industry is saying down to Philadelphia and the giants now once again, a lot of us seem to think the dodgers at the last minute will jump in. But we're going to go to Philadelphia Howard asking. So you wanna hang with us at at the top of the hour. Who is this guy now that they've John's dodgers, you know? Fascinate is funny. We Dave Flemming on down right around the first of the year during the college football playoff deal down there on the Saturday. We had him on and he was talking about how far Hans really focused on the back of the forty man roster. He's trying to build up the depth. Who knows maybe Harper's? Come. And maybe he's not. But far, Hans moves are a lot of them are just been nondescript guys, you don't know much about. Well, here's another one. But this one's interesting giants today gave cash to the nationals for Trevor got nasc-. Trevor got Trevor. A twenty six year old right handed reliever. Who's a Kentucky kid grew up in Kentucky one Lexington. High school went to the university of Kentucky Padres drafted him. He got traded to the angels trade to the nationals. But he's a closer. And the guy throws ninety ninety five miles an hour has hit ninety eight. It's got a really nasty to seamer. And he's just kind of funky righty throws for my kind of a three quarters delivery. And his fastballs got big run on it. So it's like really tales away to left handed hitters, and he's throws a little bit of a change up to lefties. He throws a slider which he gets a lot of swing and miss on. But this guy had a one fifty four era last year in spring training. They called them up in April. He sprained his ankle and may kind of ruined his year. But you know, not old throws ninety to ninety five has touched ninety eight has, you know, closer potential. You know, we always talk about how the as wind up with all these guys out of nowhere close for them. And it's the it's the. Super live arms in these bullpen guys. You just never know. This guy could be terrible. He's shown he's got control. And he got command. He's throwing mid-nineties, but he could he could be wash a wash out or it could be a guy who's a major late inning reliever for the giants. And either way you got them for cash, you know, in February. So those kinds of under the radar moves from far Farhan are the ones to keep your eye on this off season. Trevor got remember that name is he doesn't closer relation to Jim God. I don't remember him. I don't know if I just looked it up. No. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I didn't. I didn't know if he, but he's but I'll say this. If you watch this kid he can't throw the ball straight. He he throws ninety five and the balls got ridiculous run on it. And he's got a little change heartbreaking slider. Basically a to pitch guys. Basically a fastball slider guy, but the bottom for cash, and he's twenty six and if he's healthy, and he shows up, and he does something you heard it here. First. All right. He was a washout and he's terrible. Forget you ever heard it from me. And you didn't get it from me and just to show that I'm not completely out of it. I understand. Hey, all these little moves payoff in three or four years. Great. My thing is always then you wake me in three or four years. I'm what if what if we found out this gears where you can come into this thing? What if we found out that Trevor got was like, I don't know. Maybe Bryce Harper's best friend on the national said would be you know, what I'm saying. I just saw him in a nationals hat when I looked. I'm not saying that he is. But I'm not saying that he isn't all I'm saying is four Hans Fourons desire to fill roster spot thirty through forty on the forty man is one of the main reasons the dodgers have beaten the giants out in the division for so many years in a row now, it's the dodgers annually are a whole lot deeper. The giants have their five pitchers, and if two guys get hurt suddenly it's guys that probably aren't major league or they got they got five outfielders on their forty man and too. You guys get hurt. It's Carlos Moncrieff time LA's deeper and they've been consistently deeper. And I think that's one of the things at four Hans trying to flip the script is that the giants are going to be deeper under far Han. And when they go to the miners for guys in may, and June and July, hopefully, the, you know, the the Trevor got so the world's step in and you go. Wow. Look at this guy didn't think anything of it. Now, he's still a ninety eight and striking out the side in July. So hey, I said Farhan obviously knows what he's doing a dodgers giants. I'm just saying. And I think I speak for a lot of people is that after what's been going on here. We need a big score. But hey, listen. That's how you build a build a foundation. I understand all that. Hey, Jim got though who is a member. Got for the giants. Former righty. Yeah. I was I was at the game at candlestick where he hit two bombs. Yeah. Do home runs in one game for Jim got a candlestick. Wow. A pitcher way. I bring him up. Remember the base? There was a baseball strike. He was a giants player rap. Right. So he was the one guy that will what was in the early. Now look Bri early nineties. I'm going to get the exact year was ninety four. We'll see part of the guys that they wrote that whole cover story in the chronicle. The God squad was he part of that? So that was Curtis, and Gary Allan those guys and right handed guy with the glasses the be spectacled right-hander that was who's at Mike. Now, he said nine thousand nine hundred nineteen ninety-five. Okay. Well, it was one of those. I thought there was when the previous strike was. Anyway, I'm interviewing him during the strike, and he. Told me goes why are we different than Barbara Streisand? And we're entertainers there should be no caps. Exactly. Right. So I'm sitting there, and I said jeeze, Jim I I don't mean to be a bad guy. But you're not Barbara Streisand. I mean Barbra Barbara Streisand doesn't show up for a concert the whole concert is cancelled, you know, with all due respect if you don't know the players of the show. If. Jim got I'm talking about. He was talking about using himself as an entertainer and against stray said didn't show up. And I remember oppa Jim the way you were last start. It's not worth it. I think he was in the pan. No, no. Like, I said nice guy. But he just couldn't figure out what I meant. And then we go to the break, and he we shake hands a nice enough guy. But I said, Jim. At this point. You're a relief pitcher they're not coming out to see relief pitchers. Are they I mean, and then he didn't get mad. But he just couldn't figure out why I did I thought Barbra Streisand carried more weight, and he will to you. She really does was you're a big Barbara Streisand. I think she is a grade the greatest female voices of our generation or great go rent meet the faulkners, she did not like her, and I did not like her enforce the problem with baseball, though gear is that right now they have a salary cap, but they don't have a salary floor. People say all salary cap in baseball. Yeah. There is they have this luxury tax and teams want to stay beneath it they essentially have what amounts to a cap in MLB, but what they don't have is a floor. So you got all these cheap ass franchise. You don't want to spend Jack and are competitive in aren't spending any money. And now you got the Justin Landers of the world sitting there going. Hey, by the way, it was always good players out there. Nobody wants to in on them. Because you got a dozen teams that aren't even competitive in our no interest in in being competitive at all. And if you're gonna lose you might as well lose cheaply than lose while spending. So baseball needs a four they need a floor. They need to make the loser teams that aren't spending anything that are hoarding there. Money sapping off the general fund and just existing to make a few bucks here. And there they gotta either cut them loose, or you know, sink or swim right to make some incentives for four competition and have a salary floor. So that some of these teams have have to spend and the NFL you the bottom teams go sign free agents why because there's a floor. You gotta spend a certain amount, right? You can't there's a cap, but there's a floor. You gotta have a floor to incentivize the crappy teams to go do something. Otherwise, they're going to sit on their hands. And you're going to have what you have right now. Totally stagnant free agent system. So all right. We'll see it sounds like MLB could be headed towards labor stoppage. Nobody wants but he's getting paid. But there's some inherent flaws in their current system that need addressing will be interesting to see how they were taking quick break here. But it's just funny. I looked up Jim got he's now the bullpen coach for the Philadelphia Phillies, which leads to our next guest Howard Eskin and I wanted Howard Eskin on because he's a radio guy in Philly. And there's a lot of great stories. What's gonna happen to Nick foles? The Sixers are they the team getting out of the east. And of course, how sincere is the Philly interest in Harper. And how's this playing? There are people in Philly fired up about Harper. They tired of it. So it's a very verbal fan base in Eskin is a very verbal host. And he's always getting you. Join us next. Yeah. That'd be that. That should be good. But anyway, so.
