"Trump once again calls hoax this time over an article in the Atlantic that reports He called fallen soldiers, losers and suckers. Trump also says the U. S. Has turned the corner on the Corona virus, despite a dire prediction from experts at the University of Washington. Joining us now is he does most Saturdays is NPR? Ron Elving? Ron. Thanks so much for being with us. Good to be with you, Scott. Let's start there of the president started his press conference last night by citing some positive economic numbers. Then he painted a rosy scenario of the administration's response to the pandemic. Saying the U. S has turned a corner. You know, If you do a computer search on that phrase, Scott, you'll see it's been in heavy rotation back as far as April. Some governors have used its some in the media. Suggesting it was time to get back to normal. And since we first heard that phrase in early April, the number of deaths from the virus in the U. S has gone from 20,000 to 9 times as many and at the current rate will reach. 200,000 in the next two weeks and far from turning a corner. The virus may be accelerating in its infection rates and not just not just cases, but fatal cases, air increasing as well. And that report that you mentioned from the University of Washington's Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation. It says. We're going to reach for 100,000 again, doubling the current level by January, or even sooner. Unless more people get serious about masking and social distancing. Ah, now about that Atlantic article presence tonight he ever made disparaging remarks about those killed in action. And then he made disparaging remarks about his former chief of staff, retired Marine General John Kelly, whose son was killed in action in Afghanistan. How do you understand or explain the president's vitriol? This story seems to have hit the president, where he lives in more ways than one. He's long touted what he calls his devotion to the military and two veterans as his complaints about the Veterans Administration hospitals were among the first issues of his political life. And he repeatedly claims to have passed the veterans choice legislation that gives them paid options to treatment in the that it was an act sponsored years ago By John McCain. And signed into law by President Obama. And now we hear from the respected editor of the venerable Atlantic magazine at the zenith of its influence as a publication, accusing the president of saying these things about American soldiers were killed or captured or wounded in action or missing in action. Questioning why they would choose to do this with their lives. It's explosive Scott Stuff Scott. It relies on unnamed sources. Which allows the president to deny saying any of it and to use words like hawks and witch hunt. Interesting, though, to see the president pounce on former chief of staff John Kelly so hard Just because Kelly refused to join with other White House officials who were defending the president and the president again, savage the media for even posing the question, and it contrasted that with how he hears the questions, the president's for Joe Biden. Now the president took umbrage that reporters would even ask about that Atlantic story, saying they should be ashamed of themselves and that they didn't apply the same rigor to former vice President Joe Biden. When asking him questions. Here's the president. They were like meant for a child. Those questions were meant for a child smiles on faces of reporters. Not like you and you. There were smiles on the report. What do you think? Take a look at those questions that they ask him. They were not meant for a grown up. They were meant for a child. Yeah, The president thinks reporters are nicer to Biden than to him. They smile it bite and they asked him baby questions. Thanks for being with us. Thanks for having me. The district attorney released more details yesterday about the shooting on Saturday when anti fascist activists Michael Forest right now Shot and killed Erin J. Danielson. What did we learn from those records? The D. A released the arrest warrant affidavit for Enel's arrest, and we still don't know why he shot Danielson. Witnesses told investigators. They saw a verbal confrontation between Danielson and to other people, and one of them said something along the lines of you want to go. And just before rhinos shot him, Danielson set off a spray bottle, which we think was likely Mace that wasn't confirmed in the records. We also learned that day Nelson was carrying a collapsible baton in his other hand, and finally, court records show that police found a holstered and loaded Glock handgun and gay Nelson's waistband and 39 millimeter magazines in his pockets. Lionel told Vice News that he was acting in self defense, but nothing in the court record suggests Daniels and pulled a gun on right now or anyone else during that confrontation. But other agencies now are declining to help. The mayor has asked outside groups to stay away and to help deescalate and that seems to be the plan at the moment. We noted the protests are marking their 100th day. What do protest leaders on city officials say about how how and when the cycle might end? Well, it doesn't seem like this week's events changed much. Last night, A few 100 protesters were gathered at the police union headquarters, focusing the protests on the police. They've been very consistent since the beginning. They plan to stay in the streets until protesters see meaningful changes to the criminal justice system. The most consistent and specific demand has been $50 million pulled from the police budget and reinvested in the community into things like mental health care, housing and education. And as we get closer to election as the campaign's kick into high gear, a lot of city officials are saying they expect these protests could continue until November. One of my colleagues was out at the protest last night spoke to Max Smith. He's a local activist whose butt out the protest from the beginning. This is what he had to say. I think it goes on until we see change. I don't I don't think that anyone changed their minds just don't want to go back to normal, so there's no exceptions. He said. There's no incentive to get out of the streets. Smith also said that things have changed. Protesters used to come out in paper masks for Cove it now they're wearing gas masks, body armor and helmets. "Heart radio. I have a word came in. Last evening little late last evening that Michael Ryan all the man reportedly being investigated for killing the Trump supporter last Saturday in Portland, was killed after police attempted to arrest him in Lacy Washington. According to the U. S. Marshal Service, Alex Stone for ABC News. Has Mohr and so I just think thing one They were pursuing him because he was the only Was he the suspect from get go? R? Yeah, So he's the one who they were able to identify. They think that there may have been other people involved, but The weird part of this is right before the FBI tracked him down last night, And then the federal Fugitive Task Force went in that he gave an interview to vice news, and they caught up with him before the FBI found him. And he talked in that interview about the killing of Erin J. Danielson the last week and Made it pretty clear that he played a big role in firing that shot and claiming that it was self defense. And then a couple of hours later, the task force moves in and he was shot and killed. Now here's what he told Vice News last night. Had I not acted. I am confident that my friend and I'm sure I would have been killed because I wasn't going to stand there and let Something happened. So he said he was with a person of color that they were confronted, confronted by a group of what he claimed were white nationalists and that they thought they were going to be stabbed. And that save their own lives that he had to take action and talking about that thing That was on video from last Saturday. Yeah, about last week about killing Danielson, claiming that that was the moment when He had to take action and Danielson. I mean, we all know was shot and killed and heard a lot about. Um President Trump has talked about him and on then you fast forward to last night and police going in to get rain all and this is how they say it went out. We can confirm that there was Four members of the Offender Apprehension team that did fire their weapons. That's Lieutenant Ray Brady from the Thurston County Sheriff's Department says. Look, they they had a warrant for murder, and that's why they were going in to get him that they tracked him down to this home that that he did not reside in. They don't know what he was doing there, but that's where they they found him last there was an outstanding warrant. Issued for him for homicide. They claim that and we got a statement today from Attorney General Bar that he tried to run away at a gun and in the process that he was shot. And Attorney general bar today, saying that in his statement, our city's air safer with Michael Rattle off the streets. He says that he was a violent agitator and antifa member saying it shows that the U. S will be governed by law, not by violent mobs. And you know the rial. Issue that is going on. Now. This going into Saturday and Sunday is going to be a rough weekend. It seems like in Portland, Brian that this is marking. 100. Days of protest demonstrations, riots depending on who you're talking to. S 01. You've got that the 100 Day Mark. So there were planned protests anyway. But now you've got the death last weekend of ah of the Danielson. Then you have this death last night. So you've got groups that are now saying they're going to meet this weekend and they're going to get into it in Portland. Portland police Air Garin up for what could be a rough weekend. The clip of the protester basically saying that they killed a Nazi that they took out the trash took out the trash took out the trash. Well, I guess I guess that image comes from the organization or at least in their minds comes from the organization because I think it's faith based. It's the Patriot prayer group. Those are two words I think, write an anarchist really can't stand. Is Patriot in prayer. Here is the organizer of that group. Talking about what their mission is in the death of one of their members. The last few years that we've been doing is going around in areas outside of Portland, trying to help people who are victims to government overreach. Like CPS and lock down Second Amendment and J's done a really good job at showing up in supporting and just helping lift him around. Kate Brown had the nerve to call J. White supremacists didn't nerve, Tio call him something that they know nothing about Jay. Nobody in Antifa Black Lives matters. Kate Brown. Ted Wheeler known even understands who Jay is and his heart and this is their attempt to simply justify murdering him in cold blood on the streets. This is the attempt of the far left to dehumanize people so that we don't treat them like humans. But the truth is, Jay is a human. He is a human, his feelings. He's a great guy, and we need to treat him that way. By the way, J is Erin J. Danielson, That is the man who was murdered. Yeah, you know, there have been that car parade that caravan in mainstream media kept trying to make you think that somehow he was aggressive and tried to drive into a crowd or something. No. This was after the caravan had already passed through left. He was walking on the street but apparently had on the trump hat. Not a mag. Ahab is some kind of trump hat and that was enough to make him a target is on video. You see him just being shot. You're not going to see it being reported a lot of places, but you're absolutely right. Sure. I mean, it's clear that with the aggressors were in this particular case, and it was it was not the Trump supporters. Who were the aggressors in all this. Main, while curbing the violence here is acting Homeland Security Secretary Chan Wolf. On with Tucker last night, blaming the violence on local And state officials. Look, the department's been at this since early July, particularly in Portland, addressing some of this violent rioting and looting that was occurring in anarchist targeting a federal building in Portland, so we've been at this for some time. We understand we've been caused. Our having been described is causing this violence. We know that's not the case now, before they ignored it, then became D. H s his problem, and now they're they're saying it's the administration and, of course, the president's that's now causing this. So again, All these statements are absurd. They're not true. I think most reasonable Americans understand what's going on out there. And really the cause of all this is local officials. State officials not taking this seriously enough from day one. When there's violence in your community, you need to restore law and order right away. We've seen that it will work we've seen in Kenosha for several days. It's working places like Portland and other places need to take that same advice. They need to bring that law and order back to their streets. So that the residents of those cities until safe, Azad go about their business every day. Now. I just think they're convinced that you know the chaos is what's best for them. I don't think that's the case, but I think that's what they believe. Take a look at traffic.
