Safe here's a couple of. Examples our producer David Oziel was telling me yesterday that over the, weekend he went to the Kennedy Center here in Washington DC to see, Hamilton and he had to stand in line to be wanted to be checked for I, guess any metal that he might have on him that could pose a danger and that I have never seen before I was at the Kennedy, Center not that long before, that and we didn't go through that. Night David didn't mention if he We looked up to see if anybody was up in the presidential box which sometimes happens and which case there might be a reason to have. Some extra security but going see a. Show a musical and you have to pass your metal detectors that's something new I just spent a couple of weeks in. Italy and they're this is what people are putting up with armed soldiers carrying assault. Weapons and driving tanks around. In every major city I was in Rome in the in the, square at the basilica Saint Peter's Square tanks guys in uniform swinging around, this with their tank and carrying assault rifles it made me feel safe it was also, a bit jarring to see especially in that setting in Florence this wonderful ancient city full of art before you can get into the museum museum, you walk by soldiers in, uniform in tanks or other kinds of. Assault vehicles carrying rifles over there sh- slung over their shoulders I. Saw them at the airport I saw them in the ancient town of Sienna. I saw them outside Pompeii the ancient ruins the only place I didn't see armed soldiers oddly enough was in Sicily maybe, because. They've got their own kind of situation Sicily with people carrying weapons around I don't know but it was interesting I have to admit in the airports they were, everywhere the airports in Germany and Italy, very strict although the age of taking your. Shoes off seems. To have ended I guess they figured out a way for, that my wife was a randomly selected by a computer they said because she doesn't look very suspicious she's a sweet. Looking lady she had to go into a rumor they swabbed her neck looking for chemicals related to bombs they swabbed the inside of her purse so we put. Up with that because we. Wanna feel safe on the airplane okay it's an amazing change in the world, now as I said I don't want to hear about gun control I don't want. To hear about the second amendment those are other issues I'm talking about how far are you willing to put up with these. Kinds of constraints to say steak It's the beginning, of the school year I've a thirteen year. Old son he's in a, Quaker school I mean that's non violence I hope, he safe there I feel like. You safe they've. Done some fortifications they've. Done changes in the building I'm speaking, to you from right now everywhere you look we have to. Go through these kinds of things to try and stay safe what. Are you willing to put up with call us. At eight hundred seven three six three six six. Six correspondent, Erica hill talked with legal Ana. Analyst James Gog Liana about. All this and she asked him about. The investigation into this latest shooting in Florida police right, now working very closely with the FBI. In Maryland obviously where the where the shooter was from trying to put together. Some. Type of template to to understand human. Behavior, that ended up, evolving or devolving into somebody being at a. Gaming event a seemingly fun jocular frivolous event where. You know you're playing video games against other people in what caused this individual to snap look this is more from a, criminal Justice issue Erica into a homeland security issue and people always talk about we'll homeland security means, threats from the outside in no these are, threats on the inside and we've got a look at what we need to do to either hard and soft targets which displace was there was no screening or metal detectors because people thought there wouldn't be any need for them and try to figure out a way to keep citizens safe Erica 'cause we're not doing. A. Great job of it right now And you and I talked about too many of these incidents in the, days, and the weeks afterwards governor Rick Scott also lamenting what is and is not happening here's part of what you have to say, we have got to change we've got it really stop and say Duracell's there's something wrong why are young men willing to give up their life don't why don't they value, somebody. Else's life we've got to we've got to figure this out You talk. About the the hardening of softer targets we talk about security but there is also this other part of, it that is it's much harder to see of course on the outside which is the mental health aspect of it there's, been a lot made about it there's been a lot of. Talk have you seen any proposals that you. Think would make a difference. Well we'll absolutely I mean hindsight for, every. Endeavor or enterprise. Is always twenty twenty we sit back now and we? Look? And I've talked to some police sources? Who said this. Individual particular he had strange behavior Part of it was over the two day course of this event, he wore the same Said. Some things that struck people again, in hindsight is, boy that just doesn't sound right Erica we talked about this in Florida you and I. We have hippo in Purpose regulations to protect. People, and to protect people's privacy but we really need, to, look at what we can do to bring, all these scientists together yes we need to talk about guns. Yes we need to talk about mental health and, unfortunately yes we need to talk about hardening soft targets and we treasure in chairs to freedoms in. The civil liberties, we have here in the United States of America but we can't keep sending kids to school and sending folks. To events where they think they're safe they're seemingly say and then somebody's able to. Secrete a, pistol in. The waistband come, in and ended. Up killing people in themselves it's. A damn shame and we've got to come together and coalesce around this, issue all right thank you that's Erica hill talking with analyst James Gog Liana, about, all, this, we're, coming, up. On seventeen minutes before the hour now on first? Light and we'd like to hear from us? Or, call us at eight hundred seven three six. Three, six six, six do. We harden every place we. Go. To public do we turn our, schools in two, airports basically with security Going, to a concert going to gaming marathon how do we stay safe do you, have, some, suggestions, what, are, you. "This cnn breaking news welcome to the lead i'm erica hill in today for jake and were expecting to hear from the white house at any moment this mckee questions about who is topping the president's list to replace anthony kennedy on the supreme court new signs and north korea is not ready or willing to nuclear is and signals from president trump's longtime personal lawyer is he ready to cooperate with federal authorities scene it's kaelin collins at the white house force caitlyn president trump is after noon saying he'd met with four potential justices mortar about those meetings yeah that's the first we know that the president has actually sat down and done interviews with nominees since less than a week ago when justice anthony kennedy announced that he is going to retire but the president confirming he interviewed four of them this morning he declined to say who it was that he interviewed but he did say he does expect to interview two or three more in the coming days and teasing that big announcement on monday which will happen just barely weeks after kennedy announced he's going to retire in the first place the white house moving this process along very quickly but we do have sources telling cnn that the president is increasingly interested in selecting a woman to take anthony kennedy seat he's telling aids can you imagine remarking on how he also gina haskell to be the director he believes that picking a woman could do two things one bring out women voters in the midterms and also appeal to those too key republican votes senator lisa murkowski and senator susan collins now those are two very crucial hero wears a razor thin margin here for the president to make this pick and we heard from susan collins yesterday on state of the union jake tapper saying that she would not vote to confirm a nominee that she believed showed hostility toward that roe versus wade decision now we've heard from the president before on that landmark case and he was going to be putting prolife judges on the court that was back when he was a candidate now he's saying he won't ask during these interviews with candidates what their position on that is of course most of them are seen as very conservative judges likely with their opinions on roe versus wade note so we are seeing the white house move this process along very quickly and of course the president and former television host is really building the anticipation ahead of that monday announcement erica and as we went for more on that caitlyn of course over the weekend the issue among democrats the question about abolishing ice immigration customs enforcement really getting a lot of play republicans including the president really seem to be seeing it opening here yeah conservative seem to say the president could not have gotten a better gift ahead of the midterms i think were nearly one hundred sixty or so days out the president is really seizing on that language that we've seen from democrats in recent days some democrats they believe ice should be abolished president tweeting about it several times over the last few day saying that next they're going to want to get rid of all police officers certainly something he's going to seize on that language ahead of the midterms because he believes the immigration is really going to be something that will get his base motivated to come out during the midterms in save off with the white house fears could be a blue wave so certainly going to be using that language here eric we will be looking to hear more on that again there's that podium caitlin you'll be there at the brief in his briefing as we wait for sarah sanders to come out number of freshens we'll see how many she takes as we wait for that i wanna bring in our panel now sanders crystal mud all with simone as we as we look at what caitlyn was just mentioning republicans and the president really seizing on this messaging from democrat this conversation about abolishing ice how is that not a gift to republicans at this point on well you know i think you know all this hub and concern around the quote unquote abolished ice is a tactic by republicans that is trying to get democrats to play their game the fact of the matter is the thousands of people that came hundreds of thousands of came out over the weekend for these immigration rallies if you will to protest what the administration is doing is a good thing for democrats and you know there's diversity under the big tent erica so.

"Talk about something and i talked about on h l n earlier erica hill asked me to to come on and talk about louisiana congressman klay hits who's being criticized for making a video inside a gas chamber at auschwitz congressman hegede look this is a guy he is known as a tough guy and he was in law enforcement was in the military and he's made a reputation for for being a tough guy and so i mean what's interesting about this video as i watched the video and it really does show a a very respectful side of congressman hits it was recorded inside an actual gas chamber there was used to exterminate jews during world war two but in the video higgins warns that the gas chamber is a reminder it's symbolic of why a military must be invincible must be ready to go here's part of what congressman taken said it is in this video has been criticised this is why the most remember this thing man's inhumanity to man request junk i mean nothing to disagree with their than here's what he said about homeland security this is from the gas chamber as well as security must be squared away while military must be invincible i wasn't wrong for him to do this now apparently there are signs i've never been there but apparently there are signs that that ask you too to to be silent however did people not see him doing this video i mean the the video itself is disrespectful but if the congressmen did not know it was wrong that's not as bad as if he knew it was wrong and did it anyway and i don't know which is the case that i reached out to his office and they're not making any statements about this right now was it run for him to make this video and if you've seen it or if you've heard about it how did how does it make you feel i understand that the holocaust is a very very sensitive thing rightfully so but is doing the video in there is the criticism more about politics than anything else the experts memorial museum condemned the congressman to recorded his video and the basic point of the criticism was this is not a stage this is not a television studio this.

"And they said it wasn't you it wasn't anything you did or you didn't do but this just feels like a better fit and that happens in this business it's about chemistry and it's also about how the people in the front office feel about the people who were sitting there every day in front of the camera and i knew that but it's hard to hear is really hard to hear and so i i tried to keep it together and i was walking back to my office with my head down i didn't want to cry and i was texting my husband and i texted am i just got fired and he he's techniques what are you talking about and that i called my agent and i said i just got fired and they had said to me we haven't spoken to your agency at we wanted to tell you i which actually really respected you know the i think they handled it very well and in a very humane way um they said but we do we do need to put out a press release and i said could you just give me like an hour to get out of the building that was nice of you and the generous right and they did and it's funny my husband will say to me you didn't get fired and and for years he's he served on upset with me when i say that but i have come to relief i've come to find that that i actually feel very empowered when i say that because yes i was replaced y yes i they're probably could have been a role for me at cbs news but i didn't really see how i could continue their and again i think you know to their credit i think they handled all very well and and with grace and i like to think i did the same but there is part of it that and i've i've never said this on a microphone before i've certainly said it to you because we are very close friends but i was fired and that's okay one of my friends back in the day who is one of those reporters who wanted to change and came to work at the start of in san francisco janet e she said to me you have not made it in this business until you've been fired.

"But especially on a day like that when you realise how important it was to be calm and to be a place where people could get their information and at the same time be human and and i think that's always who i've been any time in my career where i've been asked to change things i've realize either in that moment or later on in many ways was asking me to not be myself and that's a tough thing to do i think you can be an objective journalist i think you can put information out there and do it in an unbiased way but it's okay to show that your human and if that means you're choking up a little bit that's okay that's life and that's real and and i think that authenticity i hope that authenticity is appreciated and that's i definitely i saw more of that i think in those few days of that week um and did understand even though we were this time you know it it wasn't abc n at wasn't cnn but there were some people were watching and we got emails about it and it and it reaffirmed my belief in the importance of journalism and sharing information and and having a place for people to turn to that they knew they could trust going from that first opportunity where you're on the air to cnn yeah that at how did you make that move uh did someone come to you as okay yeah so i got a call um there was a a manu in san francisco who was a local talent agent i didn't work with him i didn't have an agent but did you negotiate your deals in the beginning i mean were they i had an a your and you had an attorney i did have an attorney do that one deal for me um who i adore and who is still a dear dear friend to this day who is in san francisco.
