"Weekly spot on in Boston, which and Brady always did a spot there now. He has his own show, obviously, on series. And then you and your brother, Devin, doing the podcast. So I guess it's more about, I guess he allows the opportunities, but you better not do anything. You know, I think we've seen with Brady, I've always said this where, once you get out of New England, we saw Brady's personality where in New England, we didn't really see that. So yeah, it's a fine line. I think the bill is more of what you're saying. You're talking to the media. As long as you're not giving anybody a competitive advantage or you're creating a situation or a distraction, we're now all your teammates have to come in and answer to whatever you said or did in the media. I think that's where the things come out, but my three years there, I don't think I'll ever ask permission to do this or do that. But I think at the same time, he knew that I was somebody I could handle myself and wasn't going to put the team in a bad situation. Now tell me, so you played last year this year, you're on TV. Has it been difficult in any, I mean, you guys don't have a show where you're out there ripping people too much. And even ripping a strong. I mean, you can do fair criticism. I mean, there are players who deserve criticism in a fair way. I think it's probably easiest for Kyle to maybe take on a player, maybe Peter, a little bit less than Kyle because he has a lot of contacts and across the league. And then you obviously know these guys. So I'm curious from your perspective if you do have to say this guy didn't play well or they should make a change here is that hard for you at all as someone who was just with all these guys a year ago and was with them for 13 years. Yeah, I vow to myself that any opinion I have is going to be totally based on what's put out there on the field. So if I'm watching the game and I'll give them my honest opinion. And I'm honest about it to a point of like, I'm not in the meeting room. I don't know exactly what's being coached, but I can look at a play and say, hey, they're playing cover two right here. The corner is supposed to do whatever the case may be and say, he's not doing that. I'm pretty sure when I get to the sideline, it has to be corrected. Blah, blah, blah. So I think for me, that part hasn't been hard because it's never personal. It's strictly based off of football perspective. I will say throughout the course of the day, like you just laugh about stuff and I think how you carry yourself throughout your career, me being in a log room, guys that know me, or guys that know someone that knows me, Kim Bausch, they know the type of person I am and on my character and who I am just as a person. So if I'm criticizing or saying something about somebody, it's not coming up from a negative spot, but I remember FaceTime and my brother one day. He's in the locker room in New England at the end of the season. I think that day I just talked about New England and criticizing the way the season went and what they need to do moving forward. And Jamie college jumps on the FaceTime. It starts going off. I mean, he was in there talking bad about those blah blah blah, but we laughed about it. He knows me. He knows where it's coming from. I think the cooler part has been one of my teammates. I just play it with him, Miami, the Eric Rowe makes a big hit on a Sunday game against Houston and knocks the ball loose and he's Xavier Howard picks it up and scores a touchdown. He wrote gets in the locker room in Texas. I better be on your uwe for top defensive plays this week. And that was really cool for me to know my guys are seeing it. They want to recognition. And it's a cool platform to be able to like, you just had a lot of our show is more positive, but when we have to criticize, we have to do that as well, but a lot of it is being able to prop people up. Peter does a tremendous job with talking about coaches that he's built relationships with that don't always get to recognition that maybe yeah. I was going to ask if any of the, if any player had ever texted you and been like, oh, I can't believe you said that. That was a little out of bounds there, but you gave me good one, they were Jamie Collins. So yeah, I guess if you're on TV, I mean what you're see, I don't have that skill, I think, where I can, for instance, if you just saw about Zach Wilson, I would say he was terrible. I guess if you're on that show, you got to maybe soften it a little bit. And to that point, when he had been against New England, his comments after my thought was when he said to comments was a lot of people were just like, this is a Trojan, this, that, and the third and my whole thing was if I was his teammate, I would be less concerned about what he's saying in the media, more concerned about how is he carrying himself in the building. So the way I look at situations, I try to give strictly a player's perspective from being a no shoe. Because I know there's sometimes a member of your media that you see every single day and as a player. And as a person that media, you may be like, I can't stand this guy as a player. A player is the same way, like, hey, I think he's an a hole or whatever the case may be. I hate talking about and sometimes responses are triggered in that way. But to your point, like sometimes you do got to be honest bluntly honest with that, we're in those exact Wilson situation, just like, no, Mike white should be playing. I'm not going to get on there and just say, all right, Zach Wilson's a bomb. He sucks this guy in the third because that doesn't say anything. It's no different than what your kids want to say, I hate this and you're just like, why? What do you hate about it? I want to say Zach Wilson is not a good quarterback. Oh, what is he doing? That doesn't make him a good quarterback. I'm just saying this guy's a bum where he sucks. Explain what he's not doing and where he needs to work on to explain to a viewer if I'm watching at home and I'm a huge Jets fan. Why isn't Zach Wilson getting it done? What is he not doing and what can he improve on and be a good chord of that? In addition, I should have mentioned this sooner. In addition to good morning football, you do games on Westwood one. And I think if I'm not mistaken, and you've done a couple of Thursday games, which I know in my head, then I say, how is he doing the show on Friday, getting back to what we talked about at the very beginning of this interview? Do you enjoy doing the games? Would you want to do more games? Do you have a preference game studio? Give me a little how you feel about doing the games as opposed to when you're in studio. Yeah, the games are awesome. I think as a former player, my first one was, I did, I think it was four Thursday night games and in three of the Saturday games and my first one was in Cleveland. We were taking on the Steelers and you walk into the stadium and I see the equipment manager for the Cleveland Browns. I was there with four year I see different media people that I was there. I think that experience of being able to walk back in the stadium, the fans, all scream and kick off. It puts you back in it. And for me, calling the game, playing and play out, you have to be quick, you have to be concise. And it's very similar online up there at cornerback and they break the huddle and I'm thinking about all the things that can possibly come and then next thing you know the boss and that. And now you got to react and do something. Or not when you're calling the game boss nap and whether it's iron eagle, Kevin Cooper on the play by play, they stopped talking and it's just like, what did you see, how are you going to put it into words and be able to shut up before they start talking again? So I think that adrenaline rush and excitement that comes along with that, I still thoroughly enjoy that. And I just love the atmosphere. You're always at the chargers and Jacksonville playoff game and we all know how that game ended epic comeback by Jacksonville being in that stadium during that watching the fans and the players down on the sideline was tremendous. I got a chance to meet Brandon staley the night before the game. So from a relationship and a football standpoint, being able to still be in that atmosphere, I really enjoy. And I like the studio stuff too. It allows me to be at home, pick my kids up from school and all of those fun things have been a father and a husband as well. So this past year had a combination of both of them. It was a really good mix for me. And in terms of studio show, good morning, football, I've mentioned obviously. You played for 13 years. You were playing last season. Do you just enjoy sort of, you mentioned it before in sort of like two high safeties and do you like analyzing that stuff and getting into the techniques and what players should be doing on the field as much as sort of, I mean this is so much of what we do. Good morning football myself is driven by sort of also off the field storylines. Like where's Tom, what's Tom Brady going to do? What's our Rogers gonna do? Demar Hamlin, Patrick Mahomes, injury. I mean, which isn't X's and O's. Do you like getting into all that other stuff where you would prefer to just break

"At that point, they're four and four. They blew the Atlanta game. The blue the Chargers game. They really could be 6 and three. You know, in the Pats like beat the shit out of them and then people were kind of off on Cleveland, but they're getting three and a half against Miami. I like the hook. I think they could win the game outright. And I like them. Should I be more scared of this Miami team? I'm not sure. I don't think scared is necessarily it because I think Cleveland can go punch for punch in terms of point score, right? I'm on the over in this game. I like Cleveland's ability to move the ball, both on the ground. Miami's got a pretty good run defense, right? 9th by EPA per play allowed in the running game. But Cleveland just tends to work whenever. You know what I'm saying? This Cleveland running game tends to be either. We have a really good game or a good game. And we don't really get much lower than that. So I feel good about the running game, passing game wise, I feel great. Miami plays a ton of man coverage. They're banged up in the secondary. They've been playing Eric Rowe because they had a Brandon Jones go down. They're playing kahua because they've had injuries department. Byron Jones has gone down Brandon Jones has gone down. It's a banged up secondary and they still insist on playing man. Jacoby resets him pretty good against man coverage this year. He's good at taking his matchups, bushes the ball downfield. So I think you see a lot of points. What worries me if we're fading Miami is that the browns are the worst run defense in the league. I don't know if it's Raheem mostert. I don't know if it's Jeff Wilson. I just know that some back in this Miami backfield is gonna have the opportunity to rip off explosives in a big way. This Miami, this Cleveland defensive front is so easy to move off the ball. And while the Miami offensive line certainly I wouldn't go and be like, they're super great. They're very trustworthy. I love them. They've been getting better weekend and week out, and the running game has improved as this offense has been installed. I'm at a point where it's hard for me to fully trust a Cleveland team to carry a win. For adjust them to kind of carry a spread because they have such a clear weakness. And mcdaniel used to be the running game coordinator for the niners. He then knows how to pick on this. So I like totals in this game. I like points in this game more than I like any particular side. I can see this being like a final possession sort of thing. Like the bears were, right? They were four point dogs, and they were just going three, 7, three, 7, three, 7. I was back and forth on that line. I could see the same sort of thing on this one. What if I offered you a same game parlay? I love them. If the brands win, do we think the game goes over? Do you think those two things have to happen together? I think the game just goes over period. So yeah, that doesn't bother me too much. Okay. Well, right now, browns and the over is plus three 39 browns to win the game outright with the three 39. It's over it says 49 and a half now. Oh wow, yeah, so it's been moving for the last couple of days. And then you put in the chub anytime touchdown, which would probably push that to about 6 to one. And I think you're good to go. Yeah, I mean, I don't mind that at all. It sounds eerily similar to the same sort of stuff that I usually build on Saturday night and Sunday morning. You get a browns running back touchdown into a browns team total over. And most days of the week, you're cooking with gas there. It just depends on what your final legs are. As you know, I like this Miami team a lot. I like this one. I'm passing a sack a lot. So the browns might line again, it's just to me, it ends up being like a who scores class sort of thing. And that's a freaks me out. But for the odds, I think you're getting good value. All right, I might put them in underdog parlay. Dallas, in Green Bay, we can do this one quickly. So the case of, you know, the home bigger home dogs this year have been really dangerous to go against. And we've seen a lot of FU performances by the big home dogs. On the flip side, Dallas is just way better than Green Bay Gary's got scratch today. All their receivers are hurt. Rogers is a mess. What's the Aaron Jones situation? I have not seen an up down Aaron Jones as of Thursday. I know that we have no jobs and we have no stokes. I know we have no rashawn Gary. I don't expect David bakhtiari for the game. I haven't seen it. I'm looking Aaron Jones right now. Awesome defense. And here's the other thing. And this is why I really want to put the Dallas money line with something. You know, these Lambo games, they're like religious experiences. You go and there's 80,000 packer fans and it's freaking awesome and they all love the team. I think there's gonna be some Dallas fans at this game. You know, there's gonna be people. There's gonna be people that sold their tickets, they don't wanna go, the packers have lost 5 in a row, maybe like, oh, I can pay for my, I feel like there's gonna be Dallas fans, and I think there's gonna be a weird vibe. I think it's gonna be a depressing game. And I think Dallas's defense is, I just think Green Bay's offense is bad. And Dallas's defense against this offense, I don't care where they're playing. So the money line to be is a lights out opportunity here. And normally I'd be like, no, Rogers, home dog, can't count them out, but I think that's actually stupid. Right, and I also, I would, I like that mentality in the event that I think Aaron Rodgers really wants to and cares about winning football games. You know what I'm saying? When I watched that packers film, 7 watching weekend week out at this point just because it's kind of like, you know, you watch it for the cringe worth in us of your kind of watching it through your fingers. He's just lazy, it's just not in tune with the offense. He doesn't care what he's reading. He gives on RPOs that he should keep, he keeps on RPOs, he should give. The Allen lazard interception, right? He was thrown into the end zone. He sidearm flicks it, and it goes off a guy's helmet and then he throws a hissy pit. You know what to do? Throw it over the top. You've been a lead for 13 years. So I don't see an engaged player. And so like, oh, let's get up for this cowboys game. It went for the home crowd. If he does, sure, but I'd be surprised. Jones, limited Wednesday and then limited again on Thursday. So so far, kath reps. So I think he's probably going to see him play. I might be a little bit more of a two headed backfield there with Dylan. But this Dallas defense against so it's a banged up offensive line has been underperforming offensive line.

"Yeah, so that feels like a decent way to go about this, the rest of the way. Now obviously there's going to be certain matchups where the number one guys quote unquote is just a good matchup for JC and they're just going to want to put them out there, right? You know, if it's Devante Parker, if it's trying to think of some of their other matchups coming up here, those types of guys is Logan Ryan one year and then Eric Rowe the next year. Right. So that was, if I remember correctly, outside a one game that's sticking out in my head when they put Malcolm butler on Antonio Brown. He just he'd always owned Antonio Brown. He just had that bad job. Yeah, the rest of the games and those two sins and Belichick had been doing that for a while because they did this with ty law a ton too, right? Or they gave a law, the number two on an island with the number one getting bracketed or getting up against the polls. Is that against the cold? Because again, 'cause he just owned Marvin Eric. There's weird things in football where certain corners just own certain receivers. Advice versa. There's certain receivers that you kind of throw what we think of as the skill level out, not that barren Harrison is better than Taiwan, but it's more like Antonio Brown's a better receiver than Malcolm butler as a corner of butler just owned him. Like it was just this weird thing. Like Devon Bess used to kill the Patriots. Yeah. It was just like this weird thing where anyway. I always find those fascinating who specifically owns who. Yeah. So back in the day, this was more common with Belichick, but then once he got Revis and Gilmore and to leave those guys started to take the number one Gilmore especially in recent years that he would take the number one guy every week. The Patriots are playing the Chargers this week with Stefan Gilmore then. By the way, quick update Eckler questionable. Okay, so that's the other element of this. Just Jared cooking Austin Eckler depending on if Eckler is out there or not, those are the two guys that do worry you a little bit in this matchup, especially a guy like ekler. Now if the Patriots play this game out of that 60 B package that I mentioned, then maybe a guy like Adrian Phillips or Kyle duggar kind of switch off on cooking Eckler and they don't actually ever put a linebacker anywhere near Austin Eckler, but you do have to worry about on first and second down. If you have guys like Ben Lee, if you have guys like Hightower, if you have guys like van noy out there in space with Austin Eckler, that's going to be a not good development for the Patriots. So avoiding that thing is important and that's kind of why I feel like this will probably be a pretty heavy man coverage game for New England so that they can make sure that they dictate the matchups. Yeah, yeah. I know we're up against it, I don't know if you have any more points. No, I don't think we have any more Jerry cook against Kyle duggar's gonna be an interesting one. Cook has he's up there in age, but he can still play. Saving veterans overrun. And he plays a lot detached from the formation too. It's not a whole lot of inline, traditional tight end stuff. It's mostly out of the slot and a little bit out wide. I would actually venture to say that he's flexed out more than he has his hand in the dirt in general..

"I don't think the run game is special without that advantage without that quarterback that you have to account for in the run game teams. Don't have to play them Eleven on eleven in the run game anymore. That's why the patriots run game was so good last year the year before that it was one of the you know i don't think it was. I think it was a league average. Run game last year was one of the best run games so i think that's the difference between whether the patriots offense is a lot better. This year are just slightly improved. The sound you hear is just me putting a sticky note up. We've one stephen cam reference check. I want to see. We got two days without a cam. Newton reference wife the chalkboard zero days cabinet references. Ceylan i wanna ask is the perhaps the second most interesting alabama quarterback in this game. He's the guy on the other side and dua. Why didn't really talk about. Because i i'm really soon that flora's defense and i think i have a lot of faith miami. This young think events would chipper. Why offensively they need to take steps forward. In the to a era you get new. England week one. No stefan gilmore. But you still get new england one i. How do we feel about the changes. They've made how we feel about who they brought around and what. They're supporting him with ken. This offense succeed against top defense is like the one they're about one and so that's the thing right. We know that they've addressed wonder deep threat. Issue i know willfuller won't be available for that first matchup but jalen waddell nother alabama product. There's twenty million of the mini nfl. But i'm still. There's about officer line. I mean i think it was branded thorne who a newsletter you know is actually awesome like very much informative about up the wind play but like the colosseum arthritis ringer. Nfl show listen on an offensive line fly newsletter. We want seriously. It's also it should check it out But he had his great. I guess. I don't know if i call it great. That's why pause like is is threat of austin. Jackson plays on twitter. You know few weeks ago. I think and it's just like this dude at this point in his career already doesn't look like he's a serviceable left tackle. I think you're actually wanted to the point that they should start. We mike bird at left tackle bed. And i do agree with that like they do. Need the try like the figure out what their configuration is. That allows to the. Have time the sebastian. I know again going up against patriots is probably not going to happen anyway. Like i think belgian co are gonna scheme up ways to keep him under pressure and keep them. You know from seeing the field to clear before priests now but I'm curious to see how they utilized. They're receiving core tied in unit. I wanna see a little bit more involved. I think that you know with to last season We saw the you know the dolphins offense at a really good job or i guess not job. They highway utilized tight ends They are one of the highest twelve personnel groupings in the league last year. And i'm curious to see you know how to take the next step in near to one. Having the deep threats like what you came grant with. Jim waddell on the field. How you're able to utilize the intermediate and target that. Because that was area of his game at you know alabama. It seemed like obviously obama. One has the better. Athletes has a better players but he always seemed to go to the right spot and allowed that was in the intermediate part of the field. And i feel like we didn't see him really targeted much last season. So hopefully having those options like you said ben like upgrading their off line or assuming. The odds of weapons allows them to do that this year. Yeah i think the the protection item is interesting. Because i think your optimal to offense has him releasing the ball like two point. Two five two point three two point three five seconds like he should be a league leader in release. Time and by leader made quickest. That doesn't make sense if he's very fast. Getting rid of the ball end. So yes austin. Jackson being really really rough hurts and not solving left tackle hurts with that said like i do think you're going to be probably a heavy. Rpo team george godsey eric's dudes the offense coordinator there which by the way also very interested to see how the whole co offense coordinator thing works. Brian florez one hundred percent of belgium's disciple because the miami beach have been like haley. Who calls plays by what we're not gonna say that competitive advantage we the way to give a tip off the other team. We call shut up ryan but anyways to see how that whole coetzee thing works But there it's going to be. Rpo habits what we saw in the preseason. We saw all right if you're going to be off cover on j. watt in the slot throwing a ball screens suck. It's jalen waddell. You know what i mean like. They're gonna take the easy stuff. So i am worried. About austin jackson but i do think that often salons a little underrated and i think that if you're in situations where you're asking to take deep drops and hold the ball and try to push the ball deep. You're already not barking up the right tree before you even kind of get to where the offense aligns at you know what i mean. So i'm more interested in seeing how this new england defense looks because the twenty nine nineteen defense. We saw the one that led. The league looked a lot different from the twenty twenty defense. And i think a lot of that had to do with what was going on the front seven inches fell off but we saw more zone coverage last year. We saw less blitzing last year. And now we're going into the year with gilmore. I mean there's a decent chance that he doesn't ever play a game for the patriots this year. I'm really interested in seeing how confident billet check is in this cornerback Without deal more involved. Is he going. To cross the line of scrimmage and have those blitz looks and blitz the hell out of and leaves corners on a on. An island is gonna play a bunch of tampa to like. He did last year I think in the same way like dak came back to the dallas offense. We were like oh right. Everything is conditional on this man. We're gonna get done to hightower back in the patriots defense. Be like oh wait hightower. is everything right like. he's just. He's a skeleton case right. He just solves problems for them. As i agree. I know you're really big on patriots. Defense being good this year. I'm all the way there. But that's because i've watched a lot more jalen mills than you have been concerned about that. But i do think right like this is a big defensive test. One off the dolphins off. We've we've never seen Eagles defensive back disappointed philly and then go on to have a good career new england. I can't think of a single one named eric. Rowe utah chung up. He started doing. That would doesn't count as much but also yes so that okay. Dave number three because eagles defence back makes me sad green bay. Packers playing the saints but in jacksonville. Which by the way the whole saint story about how they pick jacksonville looking up. Where flights were the most expensive for green bay. Packers fans is delightful. And i appreciate it Stephen this one's yours. I deem influx and then also a team with a quarterback i would like to put them in flats what you're looking for the saints offense. I mean he'd we know what the packers offense is gonna look like. There's some intrigue on what the defense is gonna look like. But i think that's the side of the ball we focus on for this game. Right it saints offense respects defense and what. I want to see what the offense is. Is this gonna look like early. Peyton and breeze. When they were talking the ball downfield brees was throwing a fair amount of interceptions. He was always in like the teens with his intercept. I feel like this is one of the most under appreciated things that people don't talk about right like we all remember brees of last like four or five years early. Pay in breeze saints. Were flame-throwers man. And so i. I love the fact that we're talking about this. Because i think people think that pay is not gonna know what to do. Ed he absolutely does. Yeah and i went back into the the football outsiders database. I went back to the old on the next pull this information their pay rates. This was the big change in it. Kinda changed after bountygate. They used to be at the top of the league and play action rate in two thousand eight six and two thousand nine. I two thousand ten eleven. Two thousand eleven fifth. And that's when bountygate happened and then after that they went sixteen. Twelve twenty fifth. Twentieth twenty-second twenty-third. Twenty four twenty eight twenty eight. I think that was more of a breeze. More than brees is armed. Falling off because armed really didn't fall off until the last couple of years i think it was more of a oath breezes..

"Throw it. Right. They are built to stop that, right? The conventional pop back passing game is feeding right into Flores's hands. So to me, you come out, you go under center. You put the two tight ends out there. Maybe even the full back if you want to go 21 instead of 12, whatever way you want to do it, right? And you line up like you are going to run it down their throats. And then you make a decision based off of the defensive personnel and how Florida wants to match it. And you go from there, that I think is going to dictate a lot of questions in the chat. How much is Mac Jones going to throw? How much are they going to put up in the past in game? The defense is kind of going to dictate that. Because if the patrons get nickel or even if they get 6 DB, which is potentially the case with this Miami team, they're going to run it right down their throats. And they're going to run it successfully. Now, Eric Rowe is a good coverage safety on tight ends. We know he's a converted cornerback from his patriots days early on in his career, played a ton of corner. Now he's playing more in the middle of the field for Miami kind of in like a Patrick Chung type of role. But that's only one guy, right? Who's the other guy that's they have two tight ends, right? So who's gonna cover the other one? That is maybe where you can hunt some of those matchups, get some of those good favorable spots, I think for God like Johnny Smith, like you said, Alex, motion him, bring him into the formation, bring him out of the formation. I think there are going to be opportunities all over the field against linebackers against some of their depth corners and safeties. And you have a 6 foot four, 255 pound Johnny Smith, trying to get tackled by a 220 pound DB. That's going to be advantaged patriots. And I think you can kind of play playoffs play action off that too. At this point, was brought up to me by Joe.

"Sean wade basket. But maybe Sean way can be a piece. And I want to talk about him as a player because I think this is a very Belichick light trade for a player that in 18 and 19 at Ohio State was playing mostly inside as a big nickel. Kind of in a Patrick Chung type of role. He plays inside and is one of the best DBs in college football in 18 and 19 playing that role in 20 they had to move him to the outside because Ohio State believe it or not finally got a little bit thin at outside corner. They tend to have guys in droves at that spot. But in 2020 they were a little bit thin and outside corner, they moved Shaun wade to the outside to make up for that. And he got exposed out there and it was very, very clear that he wasn't that type of guy. He wasn't a true boundary corner. He's a big nickel, a slot, a money backer, that type of player, a lot like a Jalen mills. I think is a nice comparison. Eric Rowe was another comparison that somebody throughout there on Twitter to me that I think is a decent comp for a guy like Shawn wade. Somebody that's probably more comfortable inside the formation, guarding tight ends, playing zones in the middle of the field and occasionally playing outside against maybe a number three receiver. But not against the other team's number one. And the national championship game when devonte Smith gave him stole his lunch money more than once. Yeah, somebody pointed out too. I guess he played some safety in Baltimore, so maybe he's the reason why I compared him to jaylen mills initially is because he's a guy that can move all around, right? That's right. Versatility is certainly one of his better traits. Yeah, I mean, I really liked him coming into the draft. I thought he was a fit item circled as a potential fit. The other thing and you kind of touched on this, he was considered a first round pick. Some people add him as a top ten pick. After the 2019 season and then obviously rough 2020, he starts playing out a position. He falls all the way to the 5th round and I try to find the quote earlier today. I couldn't find the exact quote,.

"The most juice there to the table. To one Williams hello Juan Williams. Going up against devonte Smith last night thought he did a pretty good job. Don't have the coaches tape yet so I can't tell you exactly how it looked from the bird's eye view. But it looked like a really solid night for juwan Williams. Is this finally happening out? So they finally not only do they finally have a CB three but is this finally happening with juwan Williams that maybe it's starting to click? Yeah I mean I'll tell you this he's running with devonte Smith where that you know even if even if Shawn Williams was always playing well. You write it down when you think oh that's probably a mismatch. And he hung with him and this might be it. I don't know that he was dominant last night. We didn't see a ton of them which is a good we've talked about this was a good thing for cornerbacks. They just need him to be decent. Assuming assuming stuff on Gilmore comes back. If Gilmore doesn't come back they're hurt either way. But if Gilmore comes back they just need him to be serviceable. And I think between the joint I wasn't there but based on what you said from the joint practices and then when I was all I invite. He looks like he can be serviceable. And you know he's not going to be Jason McCourty but if he can be close and then maybe you mix Jalen mills in there a little bit. Maybe you mix Justin bethel and they're a little bit and he made a nice play in coverage last night. They might be okay. I don't know that it's great. I don't know that it's their best situation positionally but I you know I feel a little better now in terms of you know if they don't add externally I think you come away from that game certainly feeling a little better and you did going into it. He's not a difference maker. He's not a game changer but he can hold his own. And that's probably the reason somebody brought up Eric Rowe in the comments exactly. That's the guy. Someone like that. Right. Someone that's just serviceable in their role can hold their own it's not like Juan Williams is going to be asked to go up against devonte Smith in a regular season game or when they go into week one against Miami assuming Stefan Gilmore is out there. They're not gonna go hey go take Devante Parker right on an island one on one. That's gonna be Gilmore's matchup and juwan Williams is gonna be on the third wideout. Kasich you know he's gonna have a matchup right? That's gonna favor him a little bit more. They're not asking him to go out there and take number one wide receivers every week is my point. All he's got to do is take the third guy out there. That's always got to be able to do. And if he can do that then the Patriots will be just fine. Maybe they do finally have a depth piece there at corner. It also allows jaylen mills to move inside which we've been harping on all summer long. Jalen mills an inside guy. He's a slot is a money backer. He's a strong safety. He's not an outside corner..

"In the same way that i said jalen phillips might have to step up contribute immediately. I actually think john holland. The safety drafted out of oregon. He might actually have to step up pretty quickly with bobby mccain guns so this corners assuming saving howard stays or doesn't hold out that's a weird one because why talked about it with greg is like he's got so many years left you know it's complicated. And but yeah. There's eric rowe who converted safety and in his played well but like in the they brought in jason mccourty but i think i really liked holland before he opted out in two thousand nineteen when he played. I don't know if he's ready to step into this defense immediately but he might have to. He very well might have to. Because who else is going to you. i don't know if you're throwing. I don't know if you're ready to start mccourty up out there. I don't know if you know. Nee highly or tre williams if we're going to be naming we're speaking of great names in this past draft like there's there aren't a lot of their on a lot of other guys who are built for that that starting role right away but that's the that's kind of the the burden you carry when you go early in the draft when you go in the second round you very well might have to fill a an immediate role but it makes sense for them to run so much covers zero. That's why you put so much money into your defensive. Backfield specifically corner obviously with howard. I'm byron jones. And and noah i am not going to disrespect the man by mispronouncing his last name. Egg benign a believes ig monogamy. I mean so mad. If i'm messing up because i have actually. I have practiced this. I wished i he great name not great play last year by the way big manado and i know he ig monogamy sounds about right but i do know he got his welcome to the. Nfl moment against the bills and week to byron joan leaves with a hamstring injury. And he said okay. Go covers the on again. Yes that is tough to bounce back from and but it's a it's a valuable lesson that you know. This is not the sec anymore. Like you you're going to have to come bring it. But so i think the secondary is again turnover forcing i want to say that they led the league and turnovers last year. But i could be wrong. Which by the way. Because did the dolphins have a lot of things where you're like. Oh that really broke like they had a lot of weird special teams stuff turnovers and those are things. When you're looking to next year over. Your lincoln might not happen again. I mean i think their corners are really really good so and we'd discuss their aggressive. So they're they're probably going to get a fair amount of turnovers but a little bit concerned about some regression they're exactly like unsustainable figures just like you. We thought in a couple years ago with the with the patriots defense leading the league in intercepts and he figured they're not gonna get forty interceptions again. I know it's not forty. But you know i'm trying to say here. You figure they're not going to do that. So there's gotta be some room for regression but You know when you are a fringe. Playoff team last year in That's not really what you want to hear that you don't wanna hear about you know possible. Regressions are not being able to not being able to displace. What you're what you're getting from that from that russian I just can't i wanna do. I do want to take this opportunity to bring that little tidbit of history. Backup that this team needed to win one game against the bills. Who sat several starters. Not all of them. But several starters and lost by thirty. And i i'm curious. How much that motivates you going forward. Especially if you're too who played a horrendous game without ryan fitzpatrick available. I'm curious how much how much do you replay that. How much does that kind of. Burn into you as you prepare for the coming season man. That was i think that the optimists case for miami is that even if the dolphins defense regresses a little bit or many things don't go their way to a with a full off season in an offense a new offense in this great compliment skill players that he takes enough of a leap forward to where they go from being a fringe playoff team to an actual wildcard team. And it's totally possible. I'm the so wait and see on this team. I just got to see. Do you know what i mean like. I feel like i got a pretty good handle on like the bills. And you know the pats to some degree the defense but but the miami's a real wild card for me the final team. I actually on the jets. I i feel like the jets last. I have been asking people. I'm not gonna ask. You just probably looked at the depth chart so this isn't that fun. But i have been asking people who cover football for a living all morning. Can you name to jets cornerbacks and none of them could wow is. It is a problem for this team. I could name one before. I went and looked at the depth chart and then i looked at the other names. I was like damn i did not know this man the kiki palmer meam. I not know this. That is how i like the i feel. They drafted somebody. I really liked a couple years ago. I is the name i guess. That's the one i knew. Marcel.

"Be any of those guys. Jake but to your point you know when training camp comes around were just sitting here and big heart is as bulge neighborhood and we're stoked to see what these rookies can do. And here we go. Let's bring it home here with number ten we're going to we're witnessed a two parts. My apologies The top This will be released. Tuesday night wednesday morning whenever The miracle workers you spend these it. Should we spend these as your ten in. Do my ten since the older that perfect perfect. Yeah it's a deal for me. So number. Ten year olives codes of up here on a very warm tuesday of and that's the surprise cuts are coming. We're going to start having conversation about guys who shine and the only way guys can shine is if other people are kinda fallen apart out there and they're gonna be some players. We don't expect the dolphins dolphin. Strong competition at a lot of different positions to someone like alan hearns. Or l wilson kind of force. The dolphins hand that they need to be on the roster they were they shown that level consistency could suddenly chris and blooms get beat out. I'm not saying like. I think that's going to happen. But if williams kinda struggles to get back into his zone has a couple more drops in albert. Wilson is looking like that veteran. Who's been here. You don't i mean five six seven years. It wouldn't be the craziest thing i mean. We've seen the dolphins especially brand floor is do crazy things with this roster does brandon. Jones somehow play so well. The aircraft becomes expendable again. These are just random thoughts that came to my head but they're going to be players that are cut from the miami dolphins that we aren't expecting it's like the draft when everyone does their mock drafts. Everyone does their fifty three man rafters and believe it or not no offense. Everyone were all wrong. We're under some wrong. We're gonna have those mistakes. And i'm so curious to see how those develop and how brand for as his staff come to these decisions because we've we've said it most his offseason. That's how we're getting through this offseason by saying there are a lot of strong camp adults here and they're going to be some talented guys. Who are going to try to take a very quickly on other teams after the probably the third preseason game i have to say yeah i see twitter talking about a lot today probably because the dolphins are doing the joint practices with atlanta now. But they're saying are they hoarding these receivers. So that when one guy down they could move. Maybe like you said a press to williams. I've heard limb. Boden's named thrown out during the last twenty four hours. You know the dolphins decide between him. Robert wilson i mean from a fan's perspective from my perspective. I look at it and say okay. You're clearly going to go with the cheaper younger player again. This is a brian flores team in like you said you know just because we sit here and say okay that makes the most sense He could go do the complete opposite so of the biggest one that you threw out there. Jake was eric rowe. Honestly i mean we talked about in the last podcast. What he meant as far as covering tight ends. But you know he fits that bill. You know. I hate to say it but the bill of a player. That is very good. Yeah veteran leader plays pretty well but the dolphins could have a on the roster. They might wanna get snaps to and you know. They could use that money to to sign a christian wilkins or you know a jerome baker. Whoever it is so lots of things that could happen between now and then. But you're right. I think you know. I don't know man lots surprise because the one that won't be surprising and i can't wait for is to grant. I hate to made to bring him down every hidden down there podcast but i gotta do it when he when. He's on the opening day roster. I'm just gonna put the clip on repeat and tweeted out every single day. And yeah like like. I said with the williams eric rowe. These aren't things that if was to read about fifty three man roster. I'd expect but that that's kind of the point here. That once these storylines get golan. I mean they're these surprise. Cuts are gonna come in. I think it's going to be hard to stay on top of them so we're gonna kind of darnest to Make sure that's the case here but lost. Just before we could byron jones could byron jones potentially a. I mean that to me could be a little more than a cut right there. You go yeah. I guess i'd have to look at his contract. He's one of those guys that could be with any of these could be move cup but i think that someone they can definitely keep an eye on because you know maybe the dolphins are having buyer's remorse already. Yeah that's that's kind of the situation. But honestly i gotta say. I think you said it before probably more times than i have. I love the secondary of the way it is. I don't want any changes. i don't want them. Trading xavien howard It's basically turned into green eggs and ham. I would not could not. And that's mu trading. Exuberant howard nonstop. So that's kind of where i fit in. I kind of feel the same way. By byron jones for when he lacks inconsistent. I just think of his leadership on and off the field that i think that's really important for the miami. Dolphins behave we literally just set that leadership It's a business leadership doesn't always come come in first place when it's a business josh. This this is fun. I like talking about the stuff because the whole prec. This is why i got twitter right and nothing new. The regular season had nothing to do about screaming that the dolphins should try and tannehill. It was because these training camp battles These storylines they become so interesting when we get these little. Plays here there. Whether it's videos or a couple of live tweets and you can kind see the vision come together and you kind of put together a couple ideas of what you're expecting or you could have complete egg on your face. I remember being excited The first preseason game. I think it was twenty thirteen. That bill laser went out. There and brandon gibson was walk around in motion and i thought the dolphins we're gonna blow away the the rest of the teams in the nfl. So i mean you win some you lose some right. Yeah i mean that's the story of our life right. But i mean this is. This is literally why we got twitter this..

"But josh there is obviously a a little bit of room for improvement especially when you look at that bills game and how everything kind of Fell apart the one interesting. No i have about the second air here when you look at the oldest guys being byron jones and eric rowe at twenty eight before bring according to his twenty three. There's a really unique gap in terms of the miami. Dolphins secondary You have someone like Exhibit howard is twenty seven and the next closest guy to in howard. If we're talking about younger players is brandon jones at twenty three. There's nobody from. Twenty six to twenty eight in the dolphins secondary. And and i think the where do you see every kind of fitting in i. Do you see any been of concern that. There's a little bit of a gap between the older guys who know what they're doing. These rookies for trip. Still trying to figure out the issue. I had last year. I mean he was behind to absolute stuns at cornerback and he wasn't going to get any chance on the field unless one of them got her. He saw that plane time to vote. He got some plays at benico. Cornerback but i mean for us to sit here and justify eggnog. Knee is a first round. Pick and you know some people strings enough have already calling a bus but for a first round pick trajectory. I mean first year second year. You see that massive jump. Does he make a push for boundary spot. Is he making a push with coleman With like nick needham. Four that cornerbacks job. Yeah and i think. That's what brian floors jailed. Alexandra been touched on wednesday. He was working more inside. You know now they learned the preliminary starting to some of that stuff on inside at nickel. You know run support and things like that so You know. I hope to see eggnog. Any kind of take that next step and try to forge his role at nickel corner. Because that would be awesome to see. And then even have that versatility to play on the perimeter But jake tear to your point you know. Do i believe there's a huge drop off between exciting howard and byron jones. Those young guys absolutely and we saw front and center in that buffalo game early on we saw you know stefan continue talking about that cross or you know we see how the defense looks when those guys are out of the lineup. And it's just not a good feeling and it makes you wonder why fans would even want to entertain an idea to train exhibit howard when you think about it you know. Then you're throwing no egg menagian there then you don't have anyone else. You don't have security blanket. So i definitely think there's concern there but i also think it goes back to what the coach said you know. Last year even byron jones took some time to get this system down. He's in there taking notes. He's trying to get better. I think those younger guys are seeing that. And i think you know. Maybe it's a good thing that got those two elite corners and i say elite because up until last year byron jones name was up there maybe obvious the consistency but he was when he was good. He was good. He was aiming howard again. I don't think would at ten receptions if it wasn't for him but you know maybe it's just me i'm giddy thinking about it because i think we just tapped into something here. You know the dolphins at two of the best corners in the nfl. And i think that they can sit here and take some these younger guys under their wing and get the best out of them. I mean that's pretty cool to see. So i don't know what's gonna ultimately happened here but i think you know. Exerting howard byron jones and then if you can get no eggnog in there that to me is one hell of a starting three and then you know you just figure out the rest of that and again. I'm not. i'm not too sure. The dolphins don't think they can plug and play at all these different positions because we've seen it in the past Bobby mccain the one guy who is returning in the secondary. He played ninety eight percent or more of snaps in nine games for the miami dolphins defense last year Over fifty percent every game. He played hundred percent of snaps and six straight games. I mean the dude was was the definition of a workhorse for the miami dolphins and then you have someone like brennan jones up. I've been one to kinda talk. Highly of him this year. about his growth. I thought he had a pretty solid rookie season. But but i saw an interesting trend where he started a he played in fifty percent of snaps in five or more games but he really dropped off near the end of the season. Twenty five percent week sixteen And twenty percent in week seventeen there were just other safeties. Getting more steps than him But when you look at this group. Josh i remember thinking pre-draft what would it be crazy. Pick for the miami dolphins to take early because you know the projections we we create. They're not always going to be one hundred percent. Things are going to have to be expected. I thought safety would be one of those picks. So i guess this whole kind of exercise here has been me working up to the question you know. Spend a third round pick on british jones. Who again was decent simple. We saw him kind of Moose's role a bit near the end of the year. I don't know if that's just kind of Based on the different personnel on the opposing side line. Or what but you have him as a third round pick of ink monogamy as the first round pick and you have holland. Here's early second round pick. I mean there's with that much capital spent in the secondary. This team has to really push the guys again. Like i said. I don't think byron jones and sabin howard are going to boozer starting jobs. I looked to see them. Start sixteen games but in order for these high top tier picks to really justify their value. I mean these guys have to be on the field. And i don't know if i necessarily see defense where all these guys are really being. Impact players with with air grow and exhibiting howard in byron jones being at a different level than than this group. A younger guys. Yeah that's a good point. I mean you can sure code all you want but let's go to what your timelines cetera with a little rundown says and you straight up you and for we're talking about this before the draft. He mentioned safety. You mentioned tight end. So you know both you because those were positions at the dolphin fan base and you know many outsiders thought were pretty much set but jake goes back to the nfl and as cliche as it sounds. It's just moving to that. Pass i league know you say here. You've got byron jones with the big contract you got examine. How are the big contract at some point. You're going to have to get rid of one of those guys and you're going to have to try to pay some your own so i don't know that we're going to have the luxury of having these two elite corners like we do right now but i'm interested to see the way it all shapes up because again if no aid monogamy can even become half the corner that the dolphins thought he was when they drafted him. You know they'll be in pretty damn good shape and it won't be so bad lose guys like a mccain or one of those other guys enter ramp up this conversation here about the secondary i wrote a story on this for the finsider and it actually some pretty good numbers. So if you'd like you get some reading whether you have a a couple of free minutes or otherwise. Go check that out. I'm not trying to say this is like a bad thing at any ways a. I'm just thinking a year or two down the road. We have to kind of decide where these good draft picks are not. i mean. The dolphins secondary is going to have to look a lot different for us to really be happy with all these picks and think. The dolphins really made the right decisions moving forward again. I'm not doubting it. But i just think it's a really interesting transition. Obviously teams changing evolve every year and the miami dolphins secondary despite bringing back know for the five quote unquote. Starters is going to be no different than that. I'll let you have been to a quick break here. And i'm other side we're gonna talk about the biggest biggest Question of the week. I really have are we myles. Gaskin guys now is a mouse gaskin. "Because we get rid of a calvin When you get rid of a bobby mccain and then you rely on these young players they have to step up and you know we're kind of banking on those players stepping up and filling those voids. If you know it's a sure thing really isn't and i was gonna pick out some numbers Regarding row. But i didn't think that was necessarily too important. And i think the spark note version of his twenty twenty season as i think he was a pretty good safety unless he was playing against the league's best tight ends. You know you think of darren wall and trends kelsey Roy actually talk about these in the press conference. But i mean i don't know if i'm you know settling i don't know if that's right word but if i have a safety who who's pretty damn good outside of basing you know the top three four tight ends in the league. that is that is that wrong. No man and you mentioned a quote. And i think we have to be excited because i remember that philly game and at that point. I remember zach. Ertz was one of those premier tight ends. Let's be honest. Air grope erased him you know. He matched up well with him. And if your only loss is going to be against the travis kelsey at darren waller and george kittle like you said that's pretty damn good but the quote here is You know they asked him what he learned from. Those matchups getting beat pretty badly to titans he said. Obviously those are two of the best tight ends in the league along with kittle. Kinda what i learned is i got to step my game up with them. They're not really tight. Ends their big wide receivers. That can run. I know we have lost vegas week. Three i'm ready for that so You know again. It just seems different. These players understand the mistakes may last year and they're working their ass off to get better and you know it's awesome. The sierra grow surplus calendar. You know the same way. Chad johnson did when he was going. Db's and things like that. You know erica circling. I'm going against a darren waller on this day and i'm gonna show up a lot better than i did last year. I think that raiders game is a very under the radar Top tier game for the dolphins. Eric bro circled to was going to have. It circled right after last time. I mean the fish. The last thing he wanted that game to remembered about is for a quarterback not name to a right so so. I think that game is going to be quite interesting. I don't wanna get too down that rabbit hole. Though i mean we had our schedule release extravaganza a few weeks ago ahead and check that out because i mean unrivalled scheduled. Talk what you'll find here. Unfancied radio jersey. Mentioned how eric rowe kinda hinted that john hollywood might be leading the race at safety But it's not locked and he's gonna start. I mean to be completely honest with you. Would it be the most mind thing in the world that if exhibiting howard and byron jones aren't miami's top two cornerbacks. I'm not saying they will app. Saying it's it's it's very unlikely but but would it shock you in the slightest. If brian flores decided to go a different direction based on his track record as a head coach at this point. Yeah i mean when you break it down like that. I guess again it goes back to you know the trades and just every little move that brian floors and the dolphins making expect the unexpected. But if told me no would you know maybe have a better year are that to me. I would say a little bit crazy but again who knows. They're put in the work and you byron does he. He struggled last year so to think. In my opinion i think he might even better this year. So i think it'd be a little crazy but again it's bryant floors so he'll go out there with ibanez rga knee and you john holland as starting corners on. They own week one. No no what the hell's going on. I don't think anyone questioned that. I mean when you think about it josh. I don't think anybody expects xavien howard to have ten interceptions next year and you can listen to any episode of radio. Where i'm one of the hosts i have never been a fan of trading xavien howard. I think that's silly thing. I think that's kind of trying to do too much. It's like i. it's again gos- season you're gonna spend all this time. What trades can the dolphins to that smart obviously has trade batteries higher than it will ever be. But i just kind of meat. Maybe a no igwe doggy steps up and becomes a guy. Maybe jason mccourty become more consistent. I'm not saying that's likely but i'm just saying Players get better and worse every year. I breaking news. I know that's completely mind blowing. And who knows. Maybe we'll take that next step. Maybe nick needham Is is pushing to not only be a corner slot quarter but to really develop but to go back to safety accepting. That's the big question begins. eric rowe was asked about playing with jason mccourty who they played together. New england. And there are some whispers. That mccartney could be used at both safety. And cornerback which. It's kind of like eric rowe when he made that transition. Mccorvey is a little older and josh. I want to ask you because you think about someone. Like no benign twenty one years old how it is going to be rookie. Brennan jones's the second year die. And then you have guys like byron jonesing sabian howard who are top tier quarterbacks again. I'm not saying these guys aren't going to be studs i've term. We think they are but nothing. Can i certain. Nfl where does according fitness because the dolphins have their young guys that they're hoping to see grow and they had that you know quote unquote leadership and guys like Byron jones baron jones has been one of the best leaders since he showed up very well spoken. He has no problem being that guy in the middle of the quarterback to help out everyone right. That's the vibe. I've gotten from him. So where does according fit on the depth chart because you also think. Justin coleman another veteran they bought. And there's a lotta competition going on in this group despite being one of the better secondaries in the league last year. Yeah i mean. It's so hard to see her and thinking how mcchord will fit into things. And you mentioned justin coleman. I'm so glad you did. Because i actually wrote down his name here because i didn't want to miss the chance to bring him up because he has familiarity he yes he plays very well at nickel you know and again. He's a veteran. Who has had success in this league. So you know. We're sitting here and we're talking nicknamed him up maybe at nickel and they're gonna use holland a little bit there. Perhaps who's to say. Justin coleman just take that job so i can't sit here. It's so hard to say here. Just figure out the dolphins. You know lebron's florist defense and trying to figure out where these pieces are going to match up to try to figure out this damn secondary when he's going to go out there and probably pick up three or four quarterbacks before the end of the month i mean it's so hard to sit here and try to figure it out but i think they saw guys like jason mccourty who has experience again with brian floors and is again veteran leader. That you know you've got rid of some of those guys got rid of by. Can you bring him. According know he still has some of that veteran leadership that you might be missing there with mccain. So i don't know if he's going to come in here and start affiliate play safety. But i think brian flores feels pretty damn good about the the groupie has again. A lot of those guys are versatile pieces who had experience in the system. i'm teams completed. Sixty three percent of passes against the miami dolphins defense last year. That's the league's best. mark know. Obviously that includes linebackers covering a running backs and things of that nature. But but i thought that was a good point to start here when talking about the dolphins secondary and they allowed one point three passing touchdowns a game. That's league second bus mark And they sacked the quarterback on seven percent of all dropbacks. The eighth best mark of benef-. Oh i think what the dolphins did really well last year is create those pressures sax. Ray i i'm not trying to take one thing away from guys like emmanuel ogbah who absolutely pulled out last season but i mean the secondary really gave the guy The front seven opportunity to get to the quarterback and make let the quarterback make some bad decisions out there But josh there is obviously a a little bit of room for improvement especially when you look at that bills game and how everything kind of Fell apart the one interesting..
