"Era green ed ed with money. Let's play this eric reed sound because you've seen a lot of people reacting to jay z <hes> <hes> the the new created position of guy who helps with social issues and our half time show because this is such such a great business opportunity for jay z. It's like oh my artists yet to be the ones that i'm going to help you with on the halftime show and so the n._f._l. Now plays an interesting negotiating game with jay z. where they're putting him in a position he's putting himself in a position where a lot of people are looking at it and thinking thinking he is trading his blackness and black causes for a spot on the halftime show with some power. That's how it's being viewed at a take your take aside time in america. Jay z is taking the side of money and i'm willing to let this play out to see if jay z can actually instigate change with as he says actionable items but it doesn't sound like eric reid is willing to wait and see the one taking a knee to come out and tell us that we're passing on he's done a lot of great works on a lot of great social justice work but i get paid to go into the n._f._l. Press conference to say that we're passing again players coalition two point. Oh he got paid to take the bullets that he's taken now 'cause we don't have it and and with colin kaepernick blackballed out of the league that the two leaders oh of the movement really are eric reed and kenny stills the wide receiver activists for the dolphin and kenny stills said something pretty similar a similar he said of jay z talking talking about we're moving past kneeling like he ever protested choosing to speak for the people like he had spoken to the people. It didn't seem very informed. <hes> here's some more eric read but i'll say this just quickly before we get to the sound. Kenny stills did say that he's willing to give jay z and his whole partnership a chance. That's right to see how it develops. Eric doesn't see willing to do so j._c. Clinton abuse supporter of common wars jersey told people not the performance superstrong retreating column and now he's gonna be on there and scott stupid. Kinda despicable apart owner is at part owner. Where's that coming from like part owner. He was a part owner owner of the brooklyn. Nets part owner of the halftime show. Is that what they're saying that this partnership could potentially jamesy owning n._f._l. Team potential. Did he already try that. Wasn't he trying to buy the panthers. There's never been about how city i said didn't diddy is what i said. I didn't say i said did he already. They quit. That was quick sounds the same. What is he going by. Now is it p. diddy diddy. He's got something for him to what i was saying that the whole point of you guys have green light to you you know racial russian and whatnot doesn't about getting caught rookie sacrifices job but it wasn't about getting colin kaepernick back in the n._f._l. Is about bringing light to this point and and that's what you guys have done so he's saying what is the problem with him going in different route because he's choosing not to go the route necessarily day you in column. Maybe have taken the the order of events that happened. We are professional athletes. I then we started protesting system. "The NFL Colin Kaepernick and Eric Reed of reaching agreement on disclosure agreement. But we'll talk about it also debated Cleveland over signing a player who kicked a woman in a hotel hallway, here's Tom Goldman joined us, Tom. Thanks so much for being with us. Good to be with you, Scott. Colin Kaepernick lawyer put out a statement on Twitter saying they had quote resolved pending grievances. Is that agent talk for they threw money at my client. Well, we think so, but we don't know camper. Nick in read sued the NFL, claiming Lee conspire to not hire them after their protest during the national anthem as you remember started by cabernet can twenty sixteen to protest police, brutality and racial injustice. Now yahu sports said it was told previously the players would only settle if a lucrative financial agreement was reached. But we don't know for sure because a confidentiality agreement as you pointed out is ceiling everyone's lips. Well, let me out. Why didn't the NFL not the case to go to trial? It's a big powerful business that doesn't like its inner workings exposed. So it makes sense league didn't want this to go the distance last August and arbitrator rejected the NFL's request to dismiss the case. A hearing was coming up, and there would have been potentially sensitive NFL material revealed there was also the chance that even though collusion is hard to prove a kaffir Nick and read might have had enough to win. And that would have been a huge PR hit for the NFL. There's this necessarily mean Colin Kaepernick is going to be signed by any team. We don't know we really don't know at this point. It means perhaps that that he got a lot of money, but we just don't know at this point. Moving on Kareem hunt has signed with the Cleveland Browns, two months after he was cut by the Kansas City Chiefs when video surfaced of him shoving and kicking a woman NFL away says they won't tolerate players who commit domestic violence. But Kareem hunt is is just the latest linked to domestic violence to to be signed to get another chance. Yeah. That's right. There is Joe mixing in Cincinnati. Tyreek hill in Kansas City. The NFL does have a shall we? Call it a difficult history with this issue in hunts case, so Scott, this isn't simply a green light. And you're back. He can't play until the NFL finishes investigating and decides on punishment. He still facing multiple game suspension and the Browns say they will have zero tolerance for any other incidents involving hunt. A great Cleveland sportswriter Mary Kay, Cabot wrote what you and I both read at a very provocative column this week in which he said, I'm going. To paraphrase. Look Kareem hunt grew up in a violent neighborhood near Cleveland, many of his immediate family members, including his father, an uncle's were in prison and are now so is his mother he needs help. He's getting it. He he has a chance to turn this around. It could be a victory for victims of violence for everyone else in the future. Yeah. It was revealing insignificant as you say that it was written by a woman is tricky because the NFL has this difficult history that we've talked about when it comes to domestic violence cases. And let's be clear Scott. This isn't just altruism. The Browns are getting a great running back. He led the NFL in rushing as a rookie in two thousand seventeen but hunt is getting another chance to move beyond. This. We should we should explain. He wasn't charged. Right, right. He wasn't charged. And and he's getting this second chance to move beyond this toxic world. You talk about Cleveland general manager, John Dorsey, reportedly is a religious man who believes strongly and hunt's character and believes in that chance that the teams giving him Tom Goldman, thanks so much. You're welcome. To the ice rinks of Toronto. Now where there are a lot in the twenty mile radius of downtown Toronto. There's at least one hundred rinks Keith Hamilton is a musician DJ and ice hockey Reta goalie hired stick. If you please for amateur ice hockey teams in need..

"Gelb show talking Colin Kaepernick Eric Reed and the NFL reaching a settlement yesterday. Coming up at the top of the hour. We will continue to talk NFL will jump into Kareem hunt will talk about Joe flacco and also Tonio Brown as even though this is the quote unquote, NFL season, the NFL, well, you could never really put it on the back burner because the NFL is king and always will be king. And there are so many things to talk about even when you think it's starting to just die down a little bit. You have a player of great controversy signing somewhere. You have a quarterback who once when a Super Bowl MVP? But now not that popular getting traded, and you still have the drama within Tonio Browder that. Oh, yeah. By the way, you have this very big settlement yesterday with Colin Kaepernick and Eric Reed. And the National Football League. It opens up many speculation because there's a lot of facts. There's a lot of details that I wish we could. No. But. We will not find out a lot of them, and that will be some leaks. And we'll see what those leaks are in the next few days. We will track them, and we will pay attention. And maybe some more information does come available to us later down the road. But we continue to talk to you on the phone lines. Eight five five two one two four CBS. We go out to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania next. We talked to Anthony who's on this guilt show. Anthony, how are you? Thank you. Thank you. Background in labor law. I used to represent the rank and file it grievous hearings and unemployment here the compensation here football twenty years. So I'm pretty familiar with the labor law aspect, especially arbitration settlement if you'd like to know, some background what I speculate. Okay. Go ahead. Well. When you look at the settlement process, it was advantageous for both to settle the NFL didn't want methods and practices and confidential. Hearing statements put out there agreeing and capping it didn't want the fact that. The league could've used. Yes. He was he wasn't cut the free agent. And they'll say his skills may have deteriorated no show that the forty Niners didn't play. Well, even though all of that might not have been his fault. But he would have they still could have used that to say that teams looked at that. And felt that they weren't interested. I agree with the Anthony because the NFL they get to protect some potential sensitive damaging evidence that would make them look bad from getting out right now and with capper Nick's case. He could have embarrassed the NFL, but he's still may not have won the case. And then he would have walked away with nothing, and what he was what he was going here with was it doesn't take away from his. 'cause it was he thought the NFL was colluding against him. So he thought he should get a certain amount of money to compensate him for time that he missed out in the league. League or potential future contract that he would have got if he did not stand up for this cause and did not raise awareness for this cause and bring it to a football field. And then you see the reports anywhere between sixty eighty million dollars. And he thought the price was good enough. It was big enough and still publicly like you said he looks at someone that got something from the NFL and the NFL then must have been apprehensive from certain information getting released or he hit lookout follow this could if you've been in labor law. These kinds of cases, this is dream stuff for you. So I pretty much follow with what's happened. What happened is when the union will was reluctant to give you many an assistance even though the collective bargaining agreement. Stated it he didn't trust a lot. What was going on with the union? So he went out and got private attorney. Garret goes what you have more Garrett goes he's like taking a case. On contingency or pro Bono. So it was cost and capital. A lot of money to keep the pay him. But on his side through that he found to Lockhart Joe Lockhart. We used to be President Clinton press secretary. But at the time of all this going along with Catholic he was working for the league. So he was privy to a lot of inner stuff. The league didn't want out there. So they they would advocate for them to settle this. And you normally these type of thing you want to make the player. That's what they say either when you get fired from a job, but we go to arbitration the key component is they've been damaged. So you wanna make them whole? So he was making about twenty million a year. They probably settled for about maybe twenty five billion and the league pay Garrett goes, which is a fortune, and they just keep things confidential. But I wouldn't be surprised that he is allowed an opportunity for trials in the league as long as he doesn't Neil. Wants to get anti appreciate the phone call. There's an and you have a good understanding from it from from your background, a different perspective. So we appreciate that insight. But there's a lot of things that we could sit here and speculate, we don't know, and unless if that information's revealed from cabinet greeter, the NFL, and what they're allowed to reveal or not there's some things that we will get answers about. And there's a lot of things we won't get answers about. And it creates a lot of speculation. So whatever the NFL thought, it was the reason to settle whatever captured can thought it was to settle them. It'd be great reasons on both sides. But the reality is we don't know what they were yet. And we may never know that crow in San Francisco, California calls Zach yelp show on CBS sports radio CRO. How are you? Zack. In my opinion. If he got a nickel, he was he would unions one. People in this country one. There's one cop the country exports for full security these nervous. Are black. Countries. The great thing about sports is big rig is together rather than force. Art. Guy on the Niners fan. If you know, what my opinion about what's going to happen. The colleges. Takes up money starts exploratory campaign runs for the house or the Senate and also for and I want you to know that it's not our president. Bill Bradley was a Senator euro four play football with my rival fish again. And I think that's where this is going again. I think the unions one freedom of speech one. And I think the American people was mccraw appreciate inside. And thank you for the phone call. I have zero clue if Collin capper Nick has aspirations to be in political office, and he didn't vote or was even registered to vote in my opinion, or what I think if memory serves me right in the last election. So I don't know if he has any interest of jumping into those waters, but. To say that America one from this. I don't know how you declare that. Here's the thing. They raised awareness to something that was very important. Now, it doesn't stop here. And I don't think it will stop here. Just because you had the players coalition agreement, Malcolm, jenkinson, stop and just because of this. I don't think you'll have agreed and Colin Kaepernick stop because they feel that what they were protesting what they were raising awareness for is so important, and I hope that they do continue to create change and create healthy dialogue. But let's also make this clear to we need cops in this country. Something bad happens you call a cop. But we need the good cops and not the cops had abused their power. Let's go to read in Georgia next up on CBS sports radio read. How are you? Well, thanks for taking my call, man. And who knows your previous caller, but he just twenty years ahead right now. Everybody's gonna look back on this. We looked at the Mohammed Ali saying man, we don't see a need for what he did at Stanford just establish freedom. And that's what it's all about. But man, I want to talk about the deal that was made me is very important for people to know that these very small businessmen and NFL that went into this agreement San we got y when you when you when you come to agreement like this you wash your hands of hands of each other because cabinets is a polarizing cigarette. Now, the NFL so hey, we're gonna give you this money. But one thing we cannot allow we cannot allow you to come back in the league anymore, and that's very important to the lead. Because right now, they cannot stand the bag last for some people that do not agree with Kathy. So that's going to be the most interesting thing that came out of this. You know? Wingo. See play out until about twenty years from now man and in China. Trying to move on cabinet. Go fight is called support camp. And I support anybody that do not agree with that. Because that's the brutal thing about this country. We can't learn to respect each other feeling to greet to disagree. Thanks for taking my call me. And thank you so much for making it. And here's the thing when protests happen, not everyone's going to agree, and you're going to have people that are not looked in a great light in the beginning. But through time, you may change your opinion and this conversation with some people that disagree with Catherine. It could look different in twenty years big time, they could have the complete different feelings of them or they can remain the same. I don't know those still in this agreement that the NFL said Colin Kaepernick, you have to go away. Now in terms of ever trying to play in the league again. I don't know that I don't know what's next. And once again, I don't know if capital wants to play in the NFL ever again. And those are things that we said a lot through this last hour. So we can speculate it all we want. We don't know what was agreed upon in the settlement. We don't. So is he gonna play again? I don't think he will. I don't think he'll be given another.
Everything we know about the NFL's joint collusion grievance settlement with Colin Kaepernick, Eric Reid
"Quarterback Colin Kaepernick has settled his cO luge in case against the. The National Football League. His former teammate Eric Reed has also settled his case the two players sued the NFL alleging teams conspired not to hire them as retaliation for kneeling during the national anthem. They had meal as a way to protest racial injustice and police brutality with us. Now is NPR sports. Correspondent Tom Goldman. Hi, tom. Hi, mary. Louise. So what details do we know about exactly how they have settled their cases. We know nothing short interview that. Move on. We got we got three sentences in a joint statement by the NFL and the attorneys for Katherine it can read saying they have resolved the pending grievances. And that's it because of confidentiality agreement. They are not saying anything more which is a bit frustrating considering how this case this whole issue has roiled the country. I mean, let's remember how capper Nick and his actions and read and the other players who followed created great upset throughout the country. The president weighed in a number of times the vice president walked out of a game during the anthem where there were protests happening the playing of the national anthem became must see TV. But today, Mary Louise, we're left with three sentences three sentences from the people directly involved but being a dog at reporter. I'm sure you're nosing around and trying to find whatever else sang, so what does everybody else say about this? You betcha of the NFL players union. In a statement says it's not privy to the details of the settlement either. But it says it's glad that Eric Reid. Has earned a job an contract and the union continues to hope that Nick gets his opportunity as well. Eric Reed signed last year with the Carolina Panthers. And just recently he reupped with a very lucrative new three year deal. We got maybe a little insight into the settlement from Yahoo sports. It said it was told on prior occasions that cabernet can read would only settle if a lucrative financial agreement was reached between the players in the NFL and columnist Mike Freeman tweeted today, he's hearing from team officials that the NFL paid kapernick in the sixty to eighty million dollar range and then talk to university of Richmond law. Professor Karl Tobias who's followed this case closely. He says cabernet can read or vindicated in they're recovering something the money and Tobias says they're also vindicated in that a settlement shows the NFL was unwilling to let the case proceed in August of last year an arbitrator ruled the case could go forward. He rejected the NFL's attempts to have the case dismissed that gave the. Players some leverage. Although the collusion is tough to prove in. It wasn't guaranteed. The players would win. All right. So we shall watch for details of the settlement. And also as you said for what Colin Kaepernick may do next beyond being faced with Nike. I was just looking he's thirty one years old. So by Tom Brady standards. He could have a decade a play leftover knows. Yeah. That's to NPR's, Tom Goldman. Thanks very much. You're

Eric Reid continues to take knee during anthem in first game with Carolina Panthers
"Carolina Panthers safety Eric Reed knelt during the national anthem in protest of racial injustice before today's game against the New York Giants, none of Reed's new Carolina. A teammates joint him or stood near him at midfield. He's the first Panthers player ever to kneel during the national anthem with a large American flag in the middle of the field. Read went to his right knee. As the star spangled banner was sung by Marc Martel. The twenty six year old read made his return to the NFL after signing with the Panthers on September twenty seventh four months after filing a grievance against the NFL alleging teams colluded against signing him during free agency after he knelt during the national anthem alongside
"eric reed" Discussed on Xtra Sports Radio 1300 AM
"Here's one that came out of the blue on Thursday with no five minute heads up to any of the various insiders out there. It was announced by the Panthers. And it surprised if not stunned everyone Eric read a safety who has called a cabinet pointed out on Twitter should have been signed the first day of free agency finally has a deal, and it helped that there were three teams in the NFC south that all needed safeties. The buccaneers the falcons and the Panthers. I I almost thought that maybe the saints would sign him just to keep them away from that three teams in their division. Eric Reid's signing a contract with the Carolina Panthers. The Panthers being the team to break ranks. And I guarantee you at some level. They felt like they were breaking ranks because Eric Reed has a pending collusion grievance against the NFL. He's suing the NFL, and yet an NFL team has employed, and there's a lot of people out there that think it's okay to shun someone who has sued sued. Do you like if you're an employer in someone sued you that that it's okay to say all we will never hire. You you get yourself into even more problems. If you were tallying in someone who is bringing validly claims, and we know now based upon the ruling became from the arbitrator back in early September that these are valid claims of collusion. They're being made by Colin Kaepernick, and Eric read so reads, collusion k still goes forward. And plenty of people said well, Eric Reed has job. Now. There's no collusion. It's not how it works. Just because you've stopped the collusion doesn't erase the collusion that already happened the collusion. Arguably occurred from the moment free agency began in re didn't get a job, and as other safeties were signing contracts and something that the depression of the safety market was a direct result of an effort to stay away from read that these other players were victims of the collusion because it becomes grossly conspicuous if you're signing these other safeties and Eric Reed isn't even getting a sniff. Remember the one visit he had was in Cincinnati. And there was the awkward exchange with Mike Brown. The owner of the team. About whether or not just gonna stand or kneel for the anthem. And when he refused to commit to standing crickets. That's it. See you later. So there's no commitment to standing during the anthem. There's no waiver or settlement of the collusion grievance. This is a straight football deal and the Panthers doing the right things setting aside, the non-football issues that are irrelevant to his employment and making a business decision aimed at getting the most they can out of their football team. And you know, what stats have you seen any blowback that was the first concern all they're gonna get it. Now, there's going to be an angry tweet from from someone in a high position of power in this country. And and that's what the owners were all scared about is related to call and cabinet. What's been the consequence? So far for the NFL from the Panthers signing Eric read so far nothing. The first thing I did was look at the Panthers Twitter feed when they announced the signing, and I was scrolling through the comments for a long time. I saw a one comment that said I hope he doesn't Neo because it's a distraction. But that was the only remotely. Negative thing. I saw throughout my whole checking yesterday. There been so much huffing and puffing by fans over the past couple of years. I'll never watch another NFL game. I'll never do this. I'll never do that. It's very easy to say that. And then you go watch the game or you go attend the game. And people want to attribute dips in ratings to to that issue. What's going on this year? You know, what's going on this year? Exciting football games. Young franchise quarterbacks. A sense that that the old guard at least over the last fifteen years is being pushed out the door in favor of some of these teams that we're not accustomed to seeing playing well, and it kind of disrupts that narrative if people are embracing football, it's driven by great games. It's driven by great players. That's why the biggest controversy. This year has been the roughing the passer fouls because the league wants to protect the quarterbacks because the league understands that people are going to tune in on November nineteen to see Patrick Mahomes versus Jared Goff in if it's Chad any versus Sean, man. No one gives a crap. Now the question becomes moving forward. Does someone take this the next level? Go to the next step and sign Colin Kaepernick, I've said all week the smart business move for the forty Niners, which is suddenly going to experience a return of traffic problems in Santa Clara with Jimmy Garoppolo out and CJ Beathard in why not bring in capital. Oh, well, he doesn't fit Cal Shanahan system. You make the system fit him. At the most exactly when Tim tebow became the starter. In denver. Adam gates told me last year on a on a podcast that that they were ripping off plays from air force. And then, you know. They're doing everything they can to come up with an offense that will work for Tim tebow. You come up office at works for Colin Kaepernick. And the question becomes when will someone realized that this guy still is better than at least half of the backups if not all of the backups currently in the NFL and arguably is better than some of the guys that we currently see running around on football field every Sunday Monday and Thursday. So we'll see if that happens with Colin Kaepernick. But the fact that Eric Reed has signed the fact that the the world continues to spin maybe it opens the door for someone to give Colin Kaepernick. We'll see if that happens when we return get some thoughts from Greg Olsen at the Carolina Panthers on the newest addition to the Panthers, plus.

"Right. I mean, I can't pick partner anybody with them other than Blackledge they they're tied at the hip as far as I'm concerned. Gus Johnson man. Can we cross swords Keith, Jason? Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah. With someone if I wanted to put Dickie v, would someone you could have evey calling an NFL game going to do whatever you want. We're talking about NFL that's so foolish because I mean, can you imagine Gus Johnson and Dickie on a college basketball call while I need to drink like something to calm down, like camomile Teela, something like that because they'd be too excited for me. Eric Reed would kill it in football to here. I'd like to hear agreed to it. Yeah. I'd like to hear Eric Reed do a football game. I heard rich waltz to a football game once. Basketball, occasional coach football game now that we're on this subject. Oh, Oh. twenty four. Doing a football game. Now you've opened up a whole man. The dolphins are third and eight from the fifteen. It's the forty sixth time this decade. They've faced a third Nate wide Miami. Conversion rate on third. Nate is twenty point. Nine percent. Surprisingly, in the top twenty five percent in the AFC east. The Miami Dolphins, we all expect him to lose now expect him to lose England, and that's that's not a bad thing, right? I don't know if I expect then the lose. I mean, I think the spread is a spread because the patriots are coming off. A loss got off to a slow start. They get Ataman back. Josh Gordon might play and combine that with. I don't think that many people really believe in the dolphins, but they should. I mean, the titans beat the Jacksonville, Jaguars the dolphins beat the jets with the jets.

"There's an internal in the league impact and there's an extra, no outside the league in the world impact. We all know Collins, external impact beyond the NFL was extraordinary. It was historical. He is going to go down in history as the face of a crucial movement in this country he is going to become, I feel become Muhammad Ali not Dr king ask, but he's going to be up in the pantheon fair to say, I think he's already risen, absolutely risen up on it. That's the external that's the world impact. But internally within the league, I do think some of these players and by the way, Josh made some comments like these. When he sat right here. He alluded to this point of view that he wished Colin put some words in his mouth, but they weren't this. This harsh, but that he wished Colin had spoken out more spoken up more for the players because a year ago, Eric, during the last season, Eric Reed was the one who said that Malcolm Jenkins kit Colin capture Nick out of the coalition. And then Malcolm said, no, I, I kept him in the loop, but he preferred our relationship to be more informal and Colin has not spoken. In fact museum to me, I saw one review of the new commercial and the reviewers said that it had a surprise inning, and I thought I just watched it. It's not a surprise ending in the reviewer saying that you don't know. It's Colin Kaepernick speaking. Well, I know his voice that will, but the reviewer didn't know his voice. The last time that he did a media session. Right. It was at the end of his forty, nine or careers, right? Yes. Okay. And remember g q had in its Colin Kaepernick article in which he was not quoted in, but it said that g. q. said that he is. His grown in his wisdom in the power of silence. We talked about the power silence and I think Collins kind of stayed in the background because his mystique grew right, his stature grew the more he didn't speak, but I'm sure there's some players that wished he had been there out front spokesman, right that he had been a defining voice for the coalition. What dealing thing I hear that skip what I think what else say very clear on what he was all about and what this was all about to me. I don't know what else he would need to say other than I'm against police brutality and what's gone on and on on black men by white cops. That wasn't epidemic for hot minute contract more than that. The thing is, is that well, he didn't tell anybody, okay. Maybe he wanted to go hit chart his own plant. He did it kind of like the Nike. It was reported that Nike did not tell the NFL, give them a heads up what they were going to do it cap, and it definitely didn't give him the heads up that they're gonna drop this commercial. It doing Thursday night game because what would have happened cap? Probably he failed. If I tell somebody they might try and talk me out of, okay, they might try to do it a different ways. It fair. You guys see that he became more of an external activist and powerful voice. Yes. Then internally within the league and the players are saying, what about us? And he left them behind? Because like you said, the league left him behind able to play. The Lia worked wasn't going to deal with because they feel this problem with Cosby caused with Cosby Qasr of him dealing with you this in just for the record. 'cause I brought it up several times during the last football season, but our guy, John Wootton, longtime, close friend of mine. You know, I'm very, is. The head of the Fritz Pollard alliance that oversees the Rooney rule. And I talked to him several times like early last season. He said, please try to get Shannon to get Colin. Just talk to me to talk to Jim Brown just so we know where his heart is. Does he won apply any more? You want to be a franchise quarterback yet, because if he can just come and talk to us all, this was the quote from John. I'll have him a job in this league tomorrow, but I need to know because he didn't want to put his reputation, John put his reputation on for Colin if he wasn't sure where's Hartwall..
