"Because you have one quarterback you want it. We have to combine it. If you're going to go up, you better have conviction. And we have conviction on players at that top that we feel good about. I'm not going to go into it. But we feel good about being in this position. We're still going through the process right now. I mean, obviously we have our ideas. You know, you're not going to make a move like that without having that pretty much cemented, but now we're going through the process of talking to the players and really getting to know them. You know them as players starting back a couple of years from your scouts start watching these guys evaluating them. We had a snapshot of the combine where you get 18 minutes talking to them. But really, we want to get to know them what drives them, who's supporting them, who's in their family. So this is an important time to go through this process, but we do feel good about the group up top. Here's the deal. Anybody who hears that and says, oh, it's just smoke. It's a general manager blowing smoke. And that he definitely knows who's number one overall, who they moved up to go get. It's not smoke. If it's anything like most of these situations where a team is first overall, has a choice of quarterback's first overall. Who are they going to choose? And it's one person that could lead the race, but they're not fully done doing their due diligence on maybe eliminating that person or opening the door to who might have been in second place on the day of the trade. If you think that that's not possible, you're wrong. One of my favorite stories that I've picked up in my now soon to be 24 years with NFL network. Jim Morris senior, go ahead. Playoffs. That's the guy. Playoffs? Playoffs? I just hope we can win a game. Jim Morris senior prior to all of that, he was. The guy who had the first overall selection placed right in front of him. The Indianapolis Colts, who are you going to choose, here is Peyton Manning and our frequent guest host on this program, Ryan leaf. And everybody believes a lot, there's had to be Peyton right from the get go because look what happened with Peyton's career and look what happened with Ryan leafs career, so on and so forth. Jim Mora, senior told me. That they were grinding tape on the first overall selection to the very last moment. Grind and tape on it till the very end. And this is after apparently. I think if I asked Ryan this point blank that they asked Peyton Manning, hey, if you're going to be the first overall pick in the draft, what are you going to do? I'm going to get in the playbook. I'm going to do all the things that you'd want to hear the answer of your first year first overall pick quarterback that he has Ryan leaf the same things that I'm going to take my buddies we're going to go to Vegas and celebrate. Yeah, I'm pretty sure Ryan still at that stage. So even after hearing that, the colt's grinded tape on do we choose Ryan leaf over Peyton Manning. Even hearing that. I believe again. It was this is first, this is for Bryce young. But you think the decision's made. But no, no, I'm thinking the decision is made. I think on the day that they made the trade, they're like, we like Bryce young, although CJ Stroud's the one that threw at the combine and this trade was made right after the combine. Yeah, I think it's for CD. It could be for Stroud too. Also, too, Vegas knows everything. The odds totally flipped on who will be the number one pick. Well, guess what? Bryce young's pro day is Wednesday. Yeah. And it's going to, it's going to go hog wild of how terrific he looks and how he spins the ball and then the interviews will happen on NFL network and ESPN and whatever and you'll see just how incredibly intelligent and likeable he is. It's got to be him. And then CJ Stroud's pro day is Thursday. And then we'll levis is pro day is Friday and then Anthony Richardson's is a week from today. It's going to be refreshed about how great everybody looks because everybody's I don't remember the last bad pro day anybody at the quarterback position had, generally Carter apparently had one for Georgia. Okay. Well, that's another one. Sure. It's going to switch over and over and over and over again. And I want that to happen up until the last second, but Caroline has got something cooking and I really like what they've got cooking. And that's the way we wrap up this edition of the rich eisen show. We will see you on Tuesday and wrap this show up on the Roku channel in a moment. "I don't get to do whatever you want to do when you're married, you know. No, I understand. But Dale understands, come on now. She's awesome. Of course. She knows you've known her for decades too. Here's the thing. Because I heard I heard, I know there's all this talk Tyson walker being from Long Island. All this talk of New York pizza. That is the exact way to get mooch on a plane. It's to tell him he does love, he loves pizza. So maybe I could have him in the back of the cap with me and Tyson. I'll be working on that, but I don't want things Tyson's buying too. That's the deal we made last week. So I'm going to I might have two pieces, you know. I heard that I heard that how you said afterwards, he's going to dip into his NIL money to buy the pizza in New York. That one made me laugh out loud. Well, look, congratulations on advancing. Obviously, you know about surviving in advancing and you know about what it takes to cut down nets. I'm wondering what it is about this team coach that might feel different to you or remind you of a previous run. At all. It reminds me of some of them. I mean, we've been, as I said, I've done it all. I've been a one seat and got eaten the first weekend and I've been taking a two seat, I think it got beat in the first weekend and I've been 7 seat and gone to a final four. So I'm not sure seeks matter like they used to which. It's just there's just so much either parity or there's so many people trying to find themselves and the one thing I thought about our team all year. We had two major injuries early guys missed a lot of time and then we got them back and then they got then they went out again and so we've been a little bit up and down. We're not the most talented team I've had. It's kind of like the Denzel Valentine team of 15, maybe who knows if we can make a run. We've already made a little run and now the way everybody's been getting beat. I don't know who's left. It's hard to believe. I'm sure your brackets all screwed up, but even Mike brackets all screwed up. So I don't know, it's been an interesting year in college basketball. Well, I mean, the one seed in Purdue went out, you mentioned first weekend, first game, my goodness and Florida Atlantic beats fairly Dickinson and faces Tennessee and the other regional semifinal that's there in Madison Square Garden. I would say there's a clearer path to the basket, but as you pointed out, seeds don't really matter anymore. No, there's a lot of good teams. I mean, we play Kansas state and we had played Kentucky earlier. I thought we'd end up playing Kentucky in that Kansas state. And then we played Tennessee in an exhibition game early in the year and I think they got the clearest path of the elite 8. I mean, they have to beat Florida Atlantic and that's not the same, but it's an 8 seat. So who knows, you know, it's been such a topsy turvy. Tournament that every time you think you can predict something, it's unpredictable. So hopefully we'll just keep doing our job and see where it takes us. Well, I mean, if you have 55 NCAA tournament wins now, coach, and so you're a perfect guy to ask this. Is there more parity now? Is there more talent that spread out all over the country that does lead to seeds not mattering anymore? Have you noticed that from your position on a bench, all these years in the NCAA tournament? Tom? I noticed a big change. I don't know if it's parody, the transfer rule. I don't know what it is. Guys, nobody wants to stay one place. We're getting to be a transactional organization now. And instead of the old, I think your old buddy Bowe would have trouble this is my judge. I don't think they'd like the movement, you know, hey, hey, tell the kid, he's got to go to class and I'm leaving tomorrow. So I think we got some of that going on. I think we're in this period right after COVID, where everybody's trying to find themselves. But I think parity is good, but like in the NFL, I don't think everybody should be 9 and 7. Ten and 6 and it's kind of happened in our league this year, everybody was 11 7 or 11 and 8 and that's kind of hard to handle at least right now maybe that becomes the new normal. I don't know, but I think it's a situation where there's a lot of moving parts right now in college football and basketball. Let's see where it lands. Do you think there's a lot of heathcoat head knocking would happen if he was. All right, like I said, your guy bowed. I'm not sure. I'm having trouble with Justin, but those two? I don't think they'd adjust very well. Did he ever come back after knocking his head so damn hard with his own fists, say, I actually hurt myself. Did he ever say anything? Did that ever happen? One time. You had to watch on and he did it, and he was bleeding, and I told him he was bleeding and he yelled at me. And then I remember when he threw his the ball down and he came up and hit him in the head, I went to catch him. And he told me to get my blanket blank hands off me. You know, he was awesome, man. You know, guys get worried about what people say to people now. I was fired so many times during that 12 years that I'm surprised I'm still here to be honest. Are you serious? He told you he told you those things and what? You just came back to work the next day as if it didn't happen or did that? Yeah, you know, now we transfer. We leave. We'd be we'd be insulted. We'd have mental illness or something. You know, the things that go on now are so insane, but back then, it was part of building who you were in your character and you know you went through it. I'm sure everything didn't go perfect there when you started working. I'm sure you've had bosses that told you you didn't do a good enough job. You know, people outside and you fight through it. But this day and age, you kind of don't give up and quit and that's annoying to me. But other than that, I'm just happy that I got a team that isn't like that. You know, maybe because they're not all superstars, but they've even when we were struggling, I kind of believed in this team and I don't know why I'm usually a glass half empty guy, but this year I

"Hundred year check considered among the best athletic directors in the country, dawn Davenport on the sideline tomorrow for the big Memphis state game. Chris doering in studio and David basil, the former linebacker in brawls award founder. We've talked so often here about Cecil hertz, who was probably the longest running guest in the history of this show. Came out this afternoon that he will be permanently honored in the press box, at Bryant Denny stadium, Cecil, of course, passed away in December. Still kind of hard to look at that. Ryan and think about the loss of one person and what it's meant. I only see Cecil in the press box, right? Or I seem media days. And so I'll certainly think about him all the time. But the first time you walk back into the place where they always were. It's shocking. And I guess we're just at that place in our lives and in our careers where it seems to be happening a lot now when I'm going into press boxes, we're honoring the people that I've worked with and no matter what the sport is, but yeah, Cecil's, there's just a presence that is gone. And it's odd. And again, I'm older than you, of course, but there was a time and we both experienced it the press box was really the meeting spot. You had friends for your life. And now the press box is a very strange place. A lot of times, the press box is not where it used to be. They're all in the corner now. The NFL is really to blame. They realize they can put expensive luxury boxes on the 50 yard line, and now the college has done the same thing. Yeah, but you're exactly right. And for me, I mean, I've talked about it on the show. My first press box for instance was I was 12. And so when I would go into the press boxes of the ACC and it was called in Tudor and it was Bill foster those guys and then I would go to Tennessee and you got the whole back row. And it's like, it's like the way I always imagine seeing the Pacific fleet rolling in, you know, in the game couldn't start until these guys took exactly. So yeah, those were the legends for me. And so yeah, when you go into these press boxes and these guys are missing, it's just it's an odd feeling, but I'm glad to see you honored. You know, that's the thing. It actually makes a little bit better. If I walk in to see a picture of Cecil, I'll at least feel like I'm in the right place. Yeah, I don't want to see you honored anytime soon. Neil and stadium. No, no, no, no. I got some work to do if everybody was going to do that. But you know, I remember when I was in school, I mean, these guys were legendary. The guys in the Knoxville Nashville Atlanta, and I went up to one of them once and I said, man, you're dressed up in a suit and tie. And he goes, why shouldn't I be? I'm at work. I'm at work. No, no, no. And then you suddenly realize, oh yeah, this is the first time that I sat down in a press box and realized that firm ambition was sitting next to me. And again, these are the legends. These are the guys. And so, you know, back when we were young, Paul, and it was all, you know, you had to go to the library to read all the newspapers. I would go read the AJC because from a bishop was in it. And then one day you go into a press box and he sit next to you and say, yeah, I remember Knoxville. He predated you. But the legendary sports editor of the new sentinel was a man named Tom seyer. Right. I think his picture is up. It is. And I got to know him. It was getting toward the beginning of my final year, and he called me over one day, so what are you going to do? I don't know. I mean, I'm not in the school of journalism. So he made a few calls and he got me two interviews. I got one offer out of it, and that's just a guy that could pick up the phone and call anyone, didn't take it, but I should have. But what do you remember? The people you remember though. I can still tell you who was in the back row. Well, that's just it. I always tell people this that I try and I know you do too to work hard. I'll talk to a journalism class today here at Arkansas. Is I remember the ones who were nice to me. And I really remember the ones who aren't. Oh yeah. And the ones who were nice to you that make such an impact in your life because you just from a bishop turning to looking at me and saying, well, what are you doing here today? I still can't believe that it happened. No, I remember even I was a reporter in Birmingham. I was working on a story about names and I called Chris Berman. Biggest name in the industry. I got him on the phone. I said, and I kind of knew him a little bit. I say, Chris Brown, he said, I don't have time for this. I go on. I just need to I just got through telling you, I don't want to say, okay. And I saw him a couple of years ago at ESPN. I can tell you, I really didn't want to talk to him. I just thought he was a jerk ever since. I mean, that's Chris Berman, who when I first got interviewed when I first came up for my interview at ESPN. Al jaffee was a guy who took me out to lunch. He was a famous. He was the gay kid. Yeah, I asked him I said, who's 30 years old? Of all the people you've worked with, who's the one that people ask about the most. I said, he said, Chris Berman, he said, do you want to meet him? I said, no. I mean, at that point, I did not want to make it. But the flip side of that is, I went to work for ESPN in the mid 90s when boomer Colin was at the height of his powers. He was great to me. I screwed something up. You worked there. I was just slowly reporting. What you remember is yeah, but that's the kind of thing you don't ever forget. And if one of these guys asked Ryan McGee coming out of here for a picture and you say I'm too busy. You guys will remember that forever. So I'm just saying right. Capital. I'm really nice until they call me Marty. Then I just hang up on them.

"Out of meetings in Baton Rouge, you have a sense that they're bullish as to where things are and where things are headed. Joe, there's so much made out of Brian Kelly. He's a coach. He's not playing in the game, but it is intriguing. And you're being not only a legendary broadcaster, but somebody who understands the history of the game, the idea that denoted name coach is about to run out on the field with LA she was pretty remarkable. What have you seen and heard from Kelly and what do you think, what do you think he's going to be thinking about on Sunday Night? Hey, what's going on, my man. It's fine bob over here. I'm sorry. Don't mind us here. We're just doing. You know, the white router's career from central Michigan to Cincinnati to all the years at Notre-Dame. And I will tell you, and I felt this way at SEC media days, and I know you and I went out to dinner when we were in Atlanta. I thought it was a more joyful, more contented, more fulfilled Brian Kenny, Brian Kelly. Who just feels like he's in the right place at the right time. And he has things on his term. He has a support staff that he wants. He has the coaching staff that he wants. And I think he's the happiest version I have seen of him in some years fall. And I also think that he understands that the culture changed here. He's gotten the buy in that he wants that there's organizational structure that was needed accountability and standards as a word that you'll hear repeated. That's the frequent chorus. And I think he's already getting the early results through training camp that he wanted to see. Joe, before you go, can you describe exactly where you are? You may have mentioned earlier, but it's pretty noise. You're obviously in a hotel, right? We're here at the beautiful Lowe's lobby in New Orleans, getting ready for a big college football weekend. We're not far away from the casino. We were just up in Baton Rouge.

"We've been around around the horn that had a lot of the important guests on. We also gave you the news about the CFP expansion to 12 that at no later than 26, perhaps as early as 24. If this looks different than it did earlier when you were watching, we're inside a bus. That's coach muscleman here. Eric and coach said, is this look different inside? I said, yes, it looks horrible. And just like you, you have to be real. We hope to be back outside again. We had a little bit of lightning here and we were obligated to come inside. This bus is mainly meant for lounging, not television or radio. Coach, great to see you and that you were telling me a minute ago, a number of SEC schools were busy. I know Kentucky went to The Bahamas. Auburn went to Israel and you guys went to Europe. We did. We had a great time in Italy and Spain went to three incredible cities. Got to play four games. We have so many new players, Paul. We only have two returning players, so 11 new guys. So the extra practice time really helped and then obviously to be able to play competition in four games was phenomenal as well. Again, of the places I've heard, certainly The Bahamas and Israel are interesting and I've been to one and I've always wanted to go the other, but I heard Italy in Spain and I'm thinking that could be a fun trip. Are you able to forget basketball for a few minutes and go out and see some sites and some nice meals? It was incredible. It really was. We went to Lake como. We went to Valencia, Barcelona, so it's some incredible meals. Some great beach time. And we didn't really practice. You know, it was interesting because we were kind of watching from afar what other people and we never practiced other than we did go to some outdoor courts just to do a little bit of a walk through sometimes we didn't even use a basketball one time we did it on the beach. So we didn't really practice while we were over there. We used it much more for team bonding, trying to get to know each other. We did a lot of exercises to try to, you know, what are people like, what makes them tick off the floor. What's your family situation, your background, all those type of things is really what we're trying to form some team chemistry off the floor as much as on the court. And again, not that I'm a regular visitor to Lake como, but when you make a trip like this, I mean, these guys a lot. I mean, it's not like you aren't with them a lot. I mean, you are. But what do you learn about them? And what do they learn about you? Well, I think they get to, you know, when you're with a team during the course of the season, it's team meal, practice, on a bus off the bus in your office, certainly much different when you're playing football in an ocean and I'm trying to cover one of our point guards running it down and out patterns. So I think they just see you got the size for a corner. I do. I need to add a little bit of weight for sure, but I can cover some of the guys, but we had a great time and same thing family wise, you know, the players get to converse with my wife over a meal and it's just a different atmosphere to be away from your natural surroundings. Now, you've been an NBA head coach, you've been a very successful college host, only taking two teams in a row to elite 8 and we'll talk about that in a minute, but you've been you've been to Europe. You've done all these things. Do you try to advise them and they're at these nice restaurants, maybe to broaden their horizons a little bit? We did. So some of our team meals, instead of kind of letting them pick off the menu, we kind of went with what area we were in. Right. And so there was a lot of meals that went uneaten. And as I went back to my room, I would kind of look outside and somebody might be looking for the closest McDonald's, but certainly you want them to embrace the culture. We actually had our academic guy Jacob hoops is his name. Jacob gave a history lesson everywhere we went. We get kind of gave him the floor, and he talked for three or four minutes about where we were, what the history of the place was. If it was famous for anything. And then all of our pregame motivational speeches we tried to tie into the surrounding area we were at. Well, between Italy and Spain, you've got a great deal of world history from the beginning of time covered. I'm sure I'm sure you probably even learned a few things. I learned a ton. I mean, we went, you know, certain churches that I didn't know about the history of certainly some of the food. I was unaccustomed to as what was your best meal over there? Both countries, Paul, I don't know if you could have a bad meal in Italy and Spain. I mean, you'd have to really try, I do know one thing I don't want any more pizza for a very, very long time because that's everything reverted back with our players to, hey, can we get another pizza postgame or so? I love pizza regardless of where I am. So how would you compare the pizza to in Italy to New York or Chicago or anywhere or Fayetteville for that matter? Thinner crust. Okay. For sure. But the crust and the, you know, the dough much better than anything you're gonna find. And a lot less cheese on every single pizza. That's for sure. So it's not the Pizza Hut cheez it. A lot less calories than their pizza. I've been promised that. Wow, okay, I'm hungry. I'm heading, I'm heading to Lake como sounds really, really exclusive. It was unbelievable. All three hotels we were at were incredible. The only thing bad about Lake como is George Clooney was there when we were there. Actually, I jumped in a car and the guy had just driven George Clooney to a restaurant and he would not tell me which restaurant it was. But we had a great boat trip one day and I would think George Clooney would know you. I mean, he's probably he probably probably won money with you or the NCAA pool. I don't know if he would know me, but I certainly want to try to get a picture with him. I mean, you're a very well known and a very successful coach and people are coming up to you all the time for pictures, but I think it's funny to think that you would be wanting to go up and get a picture with someone. Oh yeah, for sure. That was one of the things with his wife. She's a very famous lawyer, too. The driver did not tell me that.

"Lead of the night They're up by 9 And that's why if Eric musselman you live with some of the mistakes in the poor decision making because the play making his game changes They were up by 9 and they held off a late charge by Vermont They did get it within a possession but a whole bunch of free throws a whole bunch of replays a whole bunch of stoppages for mine never really had a chance there to take a shot to take the win After a review that they fed was off of Arkansas but instead went back to Arkansas 75 71 Arkansas wins and they move on to take on New Mexico state dug in a game where hey can teddy Allen repeat against an Arkansas team that you don't want to get it up and down Yeah it's a very very different matchup Vermont is expertly coached and they are a good team and they spread you out and they have nobody inside the lane and they either driving kick or drive and finish shoot a lot of threes they play it a pretty measured pace solid man to man New Mexico states different Am I supposed to say it is much longer a much more athletic much bigger much thicker On the other hand not necessarily a skilled as Vermont and not that's Vermont team is a very very good team They play together longer and one their league championship much like New Mexico state but different in their league I think the matchup is completely different I'm fascinated because I do think again New Mexico state has the talent to play fast talent to play slow and this is in Arkansas team that it's not as good as its predecessor Not as good as last year's team and they can have some bizarre if you shut down JD you can shut down their team because other guys will try and separate themselves and they're not they're not necessarily as good as their ego things they are Richmond Providence will open the doors in Buffalo on Saturday at.

"And we are back and we were so excited to coach muscleman who's joining us. Got a lot going on here in Tampa and coach. We've talked to you so many times where we haven't had you in person, but it's so great to see you. No, thanks for having me. Paul, I appreciate it. We're just going old school here are some old memories and it is I mean, I was about to ask you, what can you do for an encore after last year? But you're working on it. We're trying, we're excited about playing tomorrow, obviously, the way that LSU's playing right now. It looks like that would be our opponent based on the first half play and they're really talented. We played them twice Paul and obviously to play a team a third time is a difficult thing to do. But our guys have had two good days of practice and I hope we're ready to play. When you're sitting there watching this game and I know you'll go back and you're prepared for I mean you've been playing LSU since you got to Arkansas. You've seen them already a couple of times. Are you looking for something else that you haven't seen? What are you looking for? You know, I think every time you see a team play, you're going to find some nuance, whether it's personnel, whether it's a play that you might want to run, maybe Missouri runs something that you think looks good or is in the same family of one of your play patterns. And you can try to exploit something. So I think any time you can see a team, that's why so many coaches are addicted to film and watching film over and over and over to the point of nausea, but you always want to try to find something extra to give yourself an advantage. So when you get done with this game, something tells me the word film is going to be mentioned again. You'll go back and what will you look at, what will you do then? We'll go back and meet with our team. So our team is watching the game right now. They'll probably leave some time here right around halftime. Maybe midpoint in the second half, get a snack, and then when I get back, we'll watch film. And really, Paul, we only do film for like 6 minute segments because we want it to be fresh. I'd rather have several film segments than like a 30 minute segment. I think it grabs your player's attention a little bit more when they know, hey, we're going to get the bullet points and then get out of here. Everything is different, but in terms of preparation for the tournament and certainly everyone knows what you guys did last year. Is this week.

"Just thought it was a really bad scene for just about everybody who's wearing a George uniform. Tough for me to remember somebody who stood out as doing the right thing when so many of them didn't. Yeah, and it wasn't like there wasn't anything on the line. I mean, the coach's job was on the line. And I think that made it even more disappointing because it's a fade or complete that he's not coming back, but you would have at least liked to say, okay, we know you have .001% chance of surviving, but we're going to die for you. Well, they've played hard for him. This whole season. Now they play harder on the offensive end. That's good. If you're a bad team, you're really only good on one end of the floor, right? They're a good offensive team. They play really hard for Tom crean and I told Korean I last week, I said, I'm really impressed with your relentless positivity. Because the writing is on the wall. And it has been, right? And you know that players can sense that. So I said, how do you do it? How do you keep it up and keep the energy? He goes, I feel like Ted Lasso. He said, I just want to be so positive all the time. And he circled back. He said, but remember, Ted Lasso is not realistic. You can't win games like that. And then the problem for Georgia, at least over the previous year, is they lose all these players within this league. The recruiting is hi there. Relentless in this league. So you have a guy who's coaching like Ted Lasso and a league full of characters from Ozark. Right. It is cutthroat. The one thing I'll say about crane, and we probably won't be talking about him again, is he was a great analyst at ESPN. He has something to fall back on. He'll be great if that's what he wants to do if he wants to get into coaching or whatever whatever happens here, but I think what he did at the beginning at Georgia is he sold the idea that we can get people in the building. And if we can get administration to help invest in this program, it will never be like they're investing in football, right? I mean, the building is going up even more, it is what it is, but if you can show people that this can be a revenue sport, get in the door at Stegman coliseum, build a winner with Atlanta right down the road. Who knows? The hard part is everybody in this conference recruits Atlanta. Sure. And everybody in the nation recruits Atlanta. In talking about this and you're doing a game, there are side stories, you are promoting the sport. This is not a talk show where as we were coming on the air, Florida fans were pouring out. And they were all screaming, fire Mike white. And I'm like, hold on a second. He does have a pretty good resume. He just lost on a three pointer, but my point being, how do you deal with the elephant in the room? Because there's still a lot of games in this tournament where the coach's job may have already been determined or could be determined. I don't know how you handled it, you know, either in this job or previous job as a newspaper writer or a columnist, but I always feel like if I'm going to talk about a subject on air, I better have approached that person and ask them about said. And it is also helpful if you show up the next day. Whatever that means. The next game and you show your face. So if they had a problem, they can approach you. Hopefully they don't, everybody kind of knows where we're coming from. So, you know, I had long conversation with console Martin. The last couple times I've seen him. If this is it, what's next? If you're coming back to next year, what changes? What's the relationship with the athletic director? And how does that affect an impact where you are in the decisions that are made within this job? If you don't, if you don't have those conversations, if you don't show up to shoot around, don't come to practice and you go on air and say, oh, they got to replace this guy. They get you fired real quick. Get you out of this network. That's for sure. Well, I agree with you. When I was a newspaper columnist, I mean, I had a hammer and axe, a chainsaw, and a nuclear bomb, in my arsenal, but I was always told by the grizzled veterans who proceeded me. Make sure you show up. Don't be afraid. Don't act like you're afraid to see the guy. And I did. And yeah, were they awkward? Were they screaming matches? Did I have I had coaches to grab me? By the collar. These are things I've never really talked about because you just let it go. I mean, it's not like somebody pulled a gun on me. But this is somebody who took a swing. I had a coach once grabbed my shirt and started, by the way, I was in college. And that's when you said, this is what I want to do. It was a head basket. He was the interim had your basketball cards. I cut him some slack because he was clearly emotional. Yeah. And.

"And he hates it. He rants about it because he knows he can't stop it and he's not a master of manipulating it. He's figured out the current system and how to win. Good for him, but now the rules have changed and he doesn't like it and he's acting like a spoiled brat going on and on and on about it. And he did throw his players under the bus. He absolutely did. And you know Paul as well as I do. Nick Saban's a little Napoleon figure and I'm not saying Napoleon's not necessarily a bad guy. He wins. But Saban is pouting in throwing conniption fits that the rules have changed and he ain't the master of it. So market Paul no more. Foggy, this conversation will be continued. Thank you so much. We want to be joined now by Josh bernardini. Everybody in the northwest Arkansas knows the show in the morning with a JB JB. It is a great talk to you again. How are you, my friend? I'm brave. I hope you're doing well. We are. And certainly, we had coach muscleman on the other day, fantastic conversation. Arkansas football, basketball. Everything seems to be going well. Let's talk about basketball for a second and just this incredible run. The razorbacks are on. Absolutely 14 wins in their last 15 games. It definitely feels like Eric musselman has got things rolling here and you're number three, right? One year after going to the elite 8 last year. So I don't know if your point to particular game this year as a turnaround, maybe the LSU game when they rallied in early January. But all we agree to start SEC play certainly had some folks a little bit concerned this year, but once again, Eric musselman, yeah, has got the team playing great defense, top 5, field goal percentage against in the country. And the dogs are playing, I guess, for a share of the title. On Saturday, in Knoxville. That's incredible. I mean, after last year's incredible NCAA run, it was starting to wonder like, what could they possibly do to top it? But this team, you know, you don't know until you see the bracket and even then the NCAA tournament speaks for itself, but what are the thoughts regardless of the outcome tomorrow or in Tampa? What are people thinking in relation to what this team is capable of in March? It's a great question. I feel like last year's the lead 8 year two in some ways, maybe was a little bit ahead of the curve for this team because Eric musselman had been really looking ahead to a big recruiting class event talent now for a couple of years and they'll be on campus coming up here in the summer and fall. So this team was almost with 5 transfers and just a few attorneys from last year's elite 18. This was almost an in between team at the start of the year. I think maybe expectations were a little bit tempered. You know, be in the NCAA tournament, but back to back to lead 8. I don't know if that was going to conversation. Now that they've got on this kind of a hot streak, now that they are playing so well together, I think expectations are right back up again. So we'll see where they end up seed wise, three, four, maybe as low as a 5, but Paul, I think the thing that has Maya has opened right now. I know yours and a lot of folks in college hoops land as well. It does feel like it's really, truly finally, completely wide open. There's not that one team that absolutely unbeatable Kentucky team we saw a few years ago or a loaded Kansas team duke's been playing really well. Lately, but that's not maybe the strongest team coach gaze. So it's genuinely feels like it's anybody's ball game and if Arkansas keeps playing defense the way it's playing and JD note keeps playing like an SEC player of the year, there's no reason they can't be playing final four time on the third weekend. Josh, before you go, I realize March Madness is here, but I do want to just get some final thoughts on after recruiting spring ball about to start on what Sam Pittman has been doing. I mean, other than fantastic..

"Welcome back here, final couple of minutes on the show. LA is in Los Angeles. Good afternoon to you. Good afternoon, Paul. How are you doing? We're doing great. Thank you. Quick question. Have you heard about mister riles resigning at grambling? Yes. We heard about that earlier in the hour and we talked to somebody about it and it is official. Yes, he's out. He is out for sure. Okay. Well, just want to know about that. And I do have one thing that to say about football and how to stop the people from falling down that thing to her, the players. They can do. My answer to that is player falls. He comes out of the game, and he has to stay out of the game until his team gets the ball back in their possession. And that way, you're not going to have players falling down just to stop the game. And you need something to do. My only concern about that is that if they fall down legitimately, but it would put an end to it pretty quickly. I agree. Jim is in Georgia. Hello, Jim. Hey, Paul, thanks for taking my call. I just want to say I miss Ed from Connecticut to God dogs. And I just had a quick question. I want your input on this the coach and rehab program at Alabama. I saw our Todd Griffin's going to Alabama. I just, how does Nick Saban do it? How does he pick out the ones that other causes of canned, then they come over there and they end up turn out successful going to bigger and better jobs. I mean, right now he's got I think Derek Dewey and grantham, I think most of these guys have been fired and they probably have buyouts, I know in grantham's Casey probably he may not have because I think his contract was up. But Saban started this many years ago. It's been very successful and for a really small amount of money. A lot of times they're making a pittance compared to a normal coaching salary. He's getting fresh eyes. So in grantham's case, he's got, he's got his defensive coordinator, Pete Golding, but now he's got somebody who has an equal standing to golden who could look at tape and go here. Listen, I think I see it this way. Yeah, when do you think Dan Mullen's going to check in? I don't think that's going to happen. It's just my gut feeling that and it's not that I'm not trying to make a big deal about it. But I think Dan Mullen is interested in television and the NFL. And I would be surprised if Dan Mullen did that. As always, I appreciate your input. Thank you very, very much. Again, updating the lead story from earlier in this hour. Art bryles four days in as the offensive coordinator grambling has resigned after enormous and withering criticism for many around college football, especially Doug Williams, the legendary former quarterback and head coach. We're out of time. We will do this again tomorrow. Have a great night. Thank you for listening to the Paul fine bomb show podcast, the Paul fine bomb show airs weekdays on the SEC network beginning at three eastern..

"Your normal commode, maybe a commode at like Brian Denny stadium at the four hours after the game. And that's one for dummy Daryl and George. That's one that he would deserve right there. 'cause I don't think the Georgia fans eat black. Him. In fact, that might be his follow me, man, that took me forward, Paul. Because just when he talks, he talks. There ain't no doubt in my mind. His head's been in total. More and more. And like you said, after the end of the game and then just go to toll at deputy and that might be his problem though. But if it ain't right, might be a fight with drowned in this conversation. Thanks for the call. Jimmy is up next. Hey, Jimmy. Hey, Paul. That's all since you were reminiscing today about old girlfriends and your religion and my lack of good subject. I thought to you not too long ago about John thorney. And he gave a great description of your relationship with John and I felt people might like to hear it again. Well, I'm glad you brought it up. Yeah, I mean, I get choked up about John forney. For those who don't know, John, and I realize a lot don't. John was the voice of the crimson tide for 25 years. All of that during coach Bryant's tenure. And he was replaced after coach left and brought back briefly. But I got to know John throughout those years and we later did a radio show on Saturday together, which is really one of the most remarkable experiences because John John made it easier for me, Jimmy because he just, by association, he showed a lot of people I was not nearly the scourge that I think I had been made out to be by my newspaper column. But a cooler guy I've never met. I mean, he knew, I don't know if you knew John or not. Did you, Jimmy? Jimmy there. Anyway. Yeah. No, I had met him and of course bonded a couple of times. Maybe it was good. He was not a he was not a broadcaster. He was a very successful advertising guy. He was part of what was called lucky and 40th at the time, which was a leading advertiser firms in the south. And prior to that, he lived in New York for a number of years, and there was just such a richness to him and especially his voice. We'll talk more about it in a minute. We're about to run out of time here for the segment, but I appreciate your call very, very much. Up against the break, 30 minutes remaining. You were listening to the Paul fine bomb show podcast. Going on, Dennis Dodd has chimed in about the art brow situation saying two teams now pro and college have done their homework in regards to hiring brows, Hamilton of the CFL and grammar. You don't announce that higher without doing proper due diligence and more consulting superiors in the co Arabic who was just with us earlier saying it's not due diligence. It's assuming you'll get away with it as long as you ride out a brief wave of bad publicity and don't forget that southern mist tried to hire art browse too. I would say Nicole one zero in that Tate. Let's get back to the calls at 855-242-7285 and check in with Kevin, who was up next to hello, Kevin. Hey, Paul, how are you doing today? Thank you. I just wanted to comment and make a couple of comments. One on our brows, he has forfeited his right to coach in college, period, and I think that says it all, and the other comment would be a lot of people say something to you about tami and miss entertainment and other two. She was one of the greatest collars you ever had. But I miss a Ed, I think he was from Connecticut for Georgia. Yeah, Ed was a caller from the coast of Connecticut, an elderly man. Got to know him very well off the air and on the air. In fact, I remember after he died, I had a nice conversation. With his wife, but he was a real character. And the idea that Ed started listening to the show or watching it was extraordinary and I'm glad you mentioned him. He's been gone a couple of years. Well, it's too bad when he did being a Georgia fan. Oh yeah, that's what happened. I happened to ban Alabama fan and I hate Georgia because of their fans as a general rule. But ad was cool. He was. Kevin, thank you for saying that. I really do appreciate it. Lance is up next in Missouri. Hello, Lance. Good afternoon. Hi, Paul. Thanks for taking my call. Thank you very much. And a shout out to coach musselman. He does have hulk supporters here in southeast Missouri. Wonderful. And I'm going to be real brief. I won't take up a lot of your time. My question is, and we discussed this at my VFW on Saturday night. If they took the teams in the southeast conference for one year and put them in 14 different conferences, how many undefeated SET SEC teams would.

"My son, Michael, who's on staff here at Arkansas was on staff at Nevada. Gus original, Hayes Meyers, Anthony root of those guys were all at Nevada. And we all of us talk about how we put so much pressure on ourselves, being a top ten ranked team that we never enjoyed the wins enough. We would win by 12 points. And I would be frustrated. And so we changed our philosophy. We want our student athletes to really embrace the challenge going into every game, except the preparation, except the fact that you're playing in front of a sold out building on national TV every night. So you have an obligation to play with great intensity, but you've also got to really, really enjoy the process. So today, we had a great hour and a half practice really focused, but also with a lot of joy too. I've really loved reading about Steve Kerr and what he's done with the Golden State Warriors throughout their championship runs and how he wants his teams to come and enjoy coming to practice. And we've tried to embrace that philosophy as well. That is such a good lesson not only in sports, but in life. I think too often we get so consumed with whatever we're doing next. Coach, what a pleasure to have you on after these huge wins. We look forward to continuing the conversation and hope to see you at the tournament next week in Florida. Thanks, Paul. You know the good thing is when your sports information director says, hey, you know, Paul would like to have you on. That's a good thing because if you're not winning, we're probably not getting an opportunity to talk so often. So we're going to hold our end of the bargain up and try to keep winning. Thanks, Paul. Thank you, coach. We hope to keep talking to you every one of these Mondays until the final one of the season. Good to be with you and you take care of yourself. Coach Eric musselman, what a joy. I know you're supposed to be nonpartisan here, but it's hard to be nonpartisan when it comes to a talking to that guy. We'll take a short break, update you on the art brow situation in grambling. Some breaking news on that. RJ will join us again. He joined us an hour ago. We think we think Richard Johnson may have killed our brows career out there with his comments here tonight. You were listening to the Paul finebaum show podcast. So this tweet here from the statement from our brows, unfortunately, I feel that my continued presence will be a distraction to you and your team, which is the last thing I want. I have the utmost respect for the university, blah, blah, blah. Anyway, it's over. It didn't last very long. Nobody understands why it happened. Certain people out there are blaming cancel culture. It is interesting though, that Richard Johnson was with us from SI and TO about an hour ago. We put out his tweet pretty much unloading on an art browse and next thing you know, art browsers out. I'm not saying Richard Johnson got art brows fired, but do the math. Richard, you're back with us. Good afternoon. Of course, I'm joking. You give me too much credit. You were the last one to put the knife in though. I will say that. So what do you think happened? I am not sure, I am not sure if this is something that came down from on high. I'm not sure if this is something that's university side people got together and said enough is enough. Or what happened here, I have it from one source that this is art sort of stepping up and resigning, but that is only one source. I don't know if there were other external pressures inside grambling that sort of said, hey, look, enough is enough and maybe came to hue or came to art and said, we've got to do something here. I think for me, looking back that on Friday, when Doug Williams released that statement that basically said, I'm done with grambling. I can't support the school as long as he's on sapp. All this type of stuff. That's when I think it jumped the shark into being untenable for them to do this. And so our brows resigns and so I guess he was offensive coordinator for all of what 72 hours, something like that of grambling state. It is just, this is I'm not gonna use the word unenforced error because this is a forced error. This is a conscious decision by multiple people in power at grambling state university to let this higher go through. And it doesn't matter the fact that four days later, three days later, he's resigning and it's all over. At the end of the day, they let it happen in the first place. And that's something that can't be forgotten. And I think ESPN Stan Murphy, who spoke to the executive director of Hugh Jackson's foundation, who released that letter on Friday that basically said they're forgiving him and all this kind of stuff. And Dan, Dan tweeted, and I quote, the failure wasn't coach browse sweeping things under the rug. I never said coach browse was guilty of something and had to be forgiven. That is the executive director of huge accents foundation..

"Oh, and one of our favorite guests has joined us coach Eric muscle, but another big knock off for the razorbacks auburn now Kentucky, they're ranked 14th in the latest 8 people, which, to me, sounds outrageous. But anyway, enough of that, coach must have joined us coach. Good afternoon and thanks for making time. Thanks for having me on Paul. I appreciate it. I hate to start on a negative note, but and it doesn't matter, of course, but shouldn't your team be ranked higher than 14th in the latest poll? I think so, but you got to watch games if you're a voter to try to evaluate true. But certainly with winning the amount of games that we have over a month and a half and the loan loss being a one point game at Alabama game that we had a possession at the end of the game to win. You know, I mean, you could argue that Arkansas right now with two games to play is played as hot as any team in the country down the stretch. Yeah, I don't know how you can argue that, but the good news is you have a chance to prove everyone wrong here as we turn the calendar to march tonight. We talked to you a couple of weeks ago after the auburn win and I know that it seemed like that place would never be able to replicate the atmosphere and the mood, but it looks like maybe you did the other the other night. I mean, that was amazing. It really was Paul. I mean, to think that, you know, we've had three really big games because you could add Tennessee as far as the crowd, I've never experienced it. I mean, and I don't know how it keeps growing because the building is already sold out, but the enthusiasm and the energy and the building has just been absolutely incredible. I mean, you could not find an empty space in bud Walton against Kentucky and, you know, I think that the one thing is when you win, it certainly helps, but when you're playing really, really hard, I think right now the entire state, you know, it has an appreciation for how hard this team has played. Sometimes not always cosmetically pleasing offensively. But the effort and the toughness certainly has been there of late and I think there's a great appreciation again every time people come to the building and the amazing thing is Paul and the game's over. Nobody's leaving like I did my radio show finished it and looked up and it seemed like we still had 12,000 people in the bud Walt now 20 minutes after the game it ended. You need to let those folks know that they can get in their car and listen to it on the way home. But I guess they wanted to be part of that. I mean, I know that we had the conversations like this last year, but things were different, but you know what you're experiencing, you also know you've got and you've done a great job, coach, muscleman of keeping everyone grounded. Even after the auburn game, you played well when you went back out on the road and obviously you continued to do that, but you know that the next couple of weeks are really where this program this year will be defined. So is it business as usual? Do you tinker or do you keep rolling it out? No, I mean, we added a couple of new offensive place today in preparation for our dame against LSU on Wednesday. And it's kind of a one game Super Bowl for us each game. We've talked about, you know, what is a pro mean? It means putting the past performance behind you, whether it's a good performance or poor performance, trying to get better, but we certainly believe that we've got to continue to tinker. We've got to continue to add each game, you kind of find a new whole both offensively and defensively where you can improve and show your team video of it and then and then show the answers to the question or the test that's coming up and we have unbelievable respect for both LSU and then Tennessee and Tennessee has not lost a home game. That's where we finish the season and obviously we talked today about to our team about how difficult it is to beat a team twice in this league because the talent level is so good and the first time we played LSU, they were without Xavier Pence and so we've got to continue to get better, not feel comfortable not feel good knowing that a whole third new season is coming because obviously the non conference is one season. The FCC regular season is the second set of seasons and now you're like you mentioned Paul it's getting to march and now that's the third new season coming upon us. We have a lot of experience with that. You obviously in your previous stop had great success in the tournament and last year as well. It is different though every year and how do you I mean this week is plenty big. Don't misunderstand me with LSU and in Tennessee and the next week, the tournament. When you get back from Tennessee Saturday night, does anything change as you get ready for the next iteration or do you just keep, okay, who's the next opponent? Let's get ready and go play. I think as soon as that Tennessee game ends and we get back Paul, what we'll do is we'll go right into training camp mode. We understand that we won't play until Friday. In the SEC tournament and so you're playing a road game on Saturday afternoon, you're off Sunday. And then Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, three days before we travel, we'll travel after Wednesday's practice to Tampa, Florida. So we'll be in a little training camp mode and really, really dive in to trying to add new things that people in our conference haven't seen, maybe. And then certainly we want to continue to add things that maybe we won't use in the SEC tournament that we'll be able to use once we have a little mini training camp prior to the NCAA tournament as well. So we got to keep getting better. I think that's the key to tournament success is, yeah, you want to be who you are, you want to keep your identity, you want to keep the themes that have helped you win games all year, but you've also got to constantly evolve and so that's our mindset going forward is how do we evolve how to maybe catch an opponent off guard at some point once postseason play happens. Talking to coach Eric musselman, I'm just thinking how exhausting these wins must be, but that's what you want. I mean, I know you were brought in to take this program to the next level, but and my have you, but how do you live in the moment and also in the back of your mind start figuring out what's next? Because you do have to you do have to embrace it. You can't walk away from what that scene the other day. That's a special moment, even though we've seen it a couple of times already. Well, I think one thing Paul is, no one's going to accuse us of not celebrating a win. So this has been our fault. It was really great learning experience, Paul at Nevada. We made a sweet 16 and then the following year, we were in the top ten for 17 straight weeks. We were not enjoying our wins. My wife reminds me of that all the time..

I'm not sure, but I don't care, but I just want to give credit where credit's due, Shane beamer, South Carolina is doing it the right way. His players love him. He's a devoted coach, and I'm just so happy because I went through the O and 21 with soccer ilana. And Lou holtz first year bust second year I was there for New Mexico state. I just missed the good days, man. I missed back when players wanted to play for coaches and coaches wanted to be there and it wasn't about the money. So Joe, my deepest apologies for that, but I'm sure you enjoyed listening to that auburn guy. Yes, I did. And anytime you interrupt me to hear a graph. I I'll be happy to listen to that all day long. Charles did not send this tough as he used to be. Remember when he was threatening to kick everyone's, you know what? Yeah, well, I mean, hey, Kyle, he's got the same kind of tone. Then you know what, Paul, I love hearing these tears come down, Alabama just lost the national championship, and I'm not crying. They make bars as lord because they can't even keep a Coke. And when they do hire one, I mean, I think I know what benign made is that something like somebody was lying to me. And he said, hey, I said, but not your banana me. He don't know how much I know about college football and I'm calm down. I know you had a little walk in south coast come on. Say what little bit he had to say he won't work a player. He beat your team. He beat your team, Charles. Alba's got a quick living in the past, Paul. Are you listening? Charles, of course, I'm listening. What is all been done in the past? They've had two cultures that was worth a player. What I'm sure a one one national championship in 25 years. The first ten years, he went 89, 28, instead of one last attempt. Sure should have. The best coach they can find and pay him. Him I got the money. Let me ask you this because I'm sure some I'm sure I'm sure the fat cats are listening right now. Who would you recommend? I done told you. Often the money won't. Then it come down when he a win. So you if I can? Well, I don't know if lane would come. That's the question. I think he would have money. You're right. Well, why don't we turn? Why don't you open then? Charles, the problem is you got to fire the guy you have right now. Well, don't worry about that. He don't. I know. I mean, I should have had him start with. Charles, you can't sure what it could as you did hire him. You. You're offering. You guys, you know, when auburn was on the verge of beating Alabama where you were saying all this? What were they beating out about? Well, I remember when if you're running back and not gone out of bounds, auburn was going to beat Alabama this year. There you go. You talking about the past. Let's just talk about the past. Two months ago, Charles, it wasn't that long ago. Too much goes into pass. Well, I'm sorry, Charles. I didn't know that. Do you still keep up with the show? Or do you have you moved on to other shows? Now I don't know. I like Michael, Michael's a good friend about it. He said. We got a good show. My question. What is your question, Charles? What is the fast coat you think that all of them could have? Well, I think lane kiffin and Hugh freeze would be too coaches. I'll take that coach from takes fan in. Jimbo? Yeah, I take it. Seriously, Charles, you think auburn can go into go in there and get Jimbo? Yeah, what enough money to catch? Got it, boom. He's making money. He's making $10 million a year right now. You can't go aim for a 7 to three in this error, this modern football. You ain't gonna last long. And I got the money. I got the back end of the screw. I get paid good money and they won't win. All the major coach like that. And I say, my opinion is the coach will do. Well, what do you say? I think lane is a phenomenal coach. I agree with you, but I'm not sure. I'm not sure Elaine wants any part of this situation, but maybe he does. I will check with lane and see if he'll take the job, okay? Yeah, I think I'll do. And I got pulled with him, you do. I'm going to take care of their own beta. You're right. So why don't you go ahead and contact lane kiffin, okay? Charles just got more pull with lane giffen than I do. I think he's right. You know what? I think he's right. Squirrel, how are you? Did you say squirrel? I did. Okay. Doing great. There was a little Paul, sorry about that. But you know, I'm often advised to call her that feel like they're so important that they need to call in twice that your second call is never as good as your first call and Charles just proved that point for me. So I really appreciate that. But I've been hearing a lot of disturbing comments some from you actually this week, regarding our friend Jim and I have one question for you. And it's a serious question. And you shielded him for so many years, why are you having issues with a mouse? Well, I would agree. I have done all of that. I think you just finally reach your point when you feel like you've given and given and given, and then you just get none of it is a reciprocate. But I've been proactive. I signed you and Jim up for a couples relationship retreat place and Palm Beach Florida. The two of us? Yes. Yeah. Do you want to know why I think Palm Beach? Yes. He's got a groupie on Twitter and I saw where he told her the other day that that's where he played ball baseball. I thought maybe I thought maybe you and him to go down there. I can't believe he has not blocked you on Twitter like he's blocked me and 10,000. He's blocked. He's blocked my squirrel from MS, but you know, he's got a second Twitter account. I do not, by the way. I need to get a second account. But I thought maybe you and him could go down there and he could go to the last place he played and maybe yonker mainly castrate.

"Call. We didn't get to experience whether it be the FCC tournament, whether it be the NCAA tournament, whether it be home games like the big game that we just saw. We didn't get to experience any of that. But luckily, our fan base felt that elite 8 run, we sold the building out and now we hope that everyone that came to that game. It would be impossible for anybody not to have from an entertainment. There's no way you could have a more entertaining two hours than what they did when they came to that auburn Arkansas game. So we're hoping with our remaining home games, Tennessee, LSU, Kentucky, that we can have incredible crowds and carry that type of feeling and environment into the end of this regular season. And finally, coach, as we look ahead. I mean, we're sitting here on February 10th where a month away from the beginning of the tournament in Tampa and then the NCAA, you want to go into march on a roll, you're on an incredible roll right now. So I've asked you this and there's no easy answer. Do you keep I mean, I know you can't keep doing what you're doing. You're playing extremely well, but how do you move this thing forward? Yeah, I think the big thing Paul is just and we talked to our team like we understand every year is different last year. We got so hot at the end of the year. And there's a lot of things that contribute to that. It's the health of your ball club. It's the mental fatigue. Where are you physically, where are you emotionally? Where are you spiritually as a team? What is your togetherness at? And then the final piece, which is probably the most important is how does your schedule lay out? We have a really, really difficult schedule. And I've talked to the team about it. We're not going to run the table like we understand that we have too many very, very talented teams that are well coached. We still have a lot of basketball to play with that next game being February 12th Saturday and it goes all the way to Saturday March 5th on the road at Tennessee. So all those games in between, we've got to continue to get better so that when we do go to Tampa for the SEC tournament and if we're fortunate enough to play in that NCAA tournament, which is everybody's goal leading into the season, we want to continue to get better. And I told our team this today, Paul, if we would have lost that game against auburn on a last second shot at the end of regulation, we would have been a better basketball team going into our next game regardless of whether we won or lost that game. We got better. And that's got to be our goal moving forward to get better every 40 minutes and then to get better in our practice segments as well. Incredible experience. And I love what you said because the amount of people watching that game at the end was enormous. The excitement across Arkansas, but it really across college basketball because everyone loves to see the number one team knocked off. I've covered a couple of games where the number one ranked Arkansas team was knocked off 25 years ago. But it has to be a memory that your fans will never forget and I know you'd like to give them a few more to remember. There's no question we can't wait to play these last few home games and have the same type of environment or close to it. And it's up to our ball club to also provide that excitement and that energy. And the one thing that you can never do as a player as a program as a not our front office, but our administration, the coaching staff. We have got to understand that we've got to give back to our fans. We've got to connect with our fans on a daily basis. We've got to connect with the student body and we have to let them know our appreciation for them spending their money for them participating in like a whiteout and going out and buying a white shirt and adding to the environment because at the end of the day, we have to provide entertainment to get people to come back into our building. We can never take for granted that people have a lot of other options to do, but we've got to get them in bud Walt and then we got to make that entertaining experience as good as we can. Coach won't apply to it. Congratulations again, can't wait to continue this conversation as we head toward the tournament. All the very best. Thanks so much, Paul. We got to keep winning to come back on your show. So that's motivation as well. I appreciate you having me on love listen to you. Thank you. It was our pleasure. What a thrill to talk to coach Musk. We have had so many great conversations with him over the years. You were listening to the Paul finebaum show podcast..

Arkansas Head Coach, Eric Musselman, Discusses His Team's Success This Year
"Know there's a game coming up tomorrow but if we could just get some final thoughts on north we're violating the twenty four hour rule or not. But how does it feel to. I mean your fans are buzzing right. Now they've been excited all year but that really brought it home the other night. I mean the thing that that we're probably the most proud of paul is just the fact you know we got thumped tuscaloosa and we got beat before that at lsu When we were in bad rooch pretty pretty bad too and and We were able to bounce back between those two games. We had a really physical practice with weighted vests. And and you know. I'm not sure we had enough legs To play the fast place style of play that that obama plays and coach you know gets his guys really get out and run and and You know looking back. We knew that that practice would you know would would maybe set us back slightly but we're trying to think long term. We had a great environment. I mean we. You know i understand. It's a pandemic but we had a really good student section. Our crowd was good. There's there's there's been a lot of excitement over the last few weeks with the way that the team is played and and it was a big game. Th you know anytime you get a top ten cheap You know and you can you can you number one. You don't get a lot of opportunities to play top ten teams then when you do and you're able to to get a win. It is a big deal for the fans at former players boosters and and for the student athletes to reward them for for a lot of hard work but we have incredible respect coach oats and his team and we know that you know they're one of the top teams in the entire country so it was a big win. But you're right you gotta turn the page. And that's part of your team is having maturity when you do win a big game two to turn the page and get ready for your next game. I mean you're now final two days of february and and certainly you're going to be going through this now. You're going to be going through this in the sec tournament and ultimately in the nc double a. tournament for for a program that has not won a lot of big games lately. How drill that into their their minds. That this was fantastic. But it doesn't mean anything tomorrow. I mean i think you know all you can do. Really paul's just continue to talk. educate You know. I told him today that you know. I'm a lot older than them. I'm getting getting towards being an old man. And and sometimes you gotta listen to your elders a little bit on on some of these things that you talk about that you know the game you know tomorrow when we play l. s. u. the prior game against lsu doesn't matter and our pr- prior win against alabama doesn't matter there's forty minutes you've got to go out you got to be focused and You know it's. I think that that just kind of how it is and and You know the good thing is having gone through it nevada. You know none of those guys that we had there had really been through it either But i think the big thing is just understanding that each day. You've got to continue to get better. I mean even you know with with with three games to go now. We're talking about how we can get better. We're talking about improving our practice habits. We we do a to onto pick and roll defensive drill today that i'm sure they weren't really excited about doing a two onto pick and roll drill that might be. You would consider a training camp drill but we want to get better and anybody that aspires to play beyond college. Basketball should should want to become a better pick and roll defensive player so hopefully you know you can get your guys excited to understand that you know you're not just doing it for the lead these last three games and then tournament situations you're doing it for the longevity of your career as

"What I mean by that is I want to be positive, and I'm gonna live my life on a one day contract. One day contract like I gotta get that contract renewed every single day. That is gold. I love that. I love that match up to Packers Rams. You're in. Donald got her during that game, man, You hear some of the commentary? Troy even was saying during that game that he literally he's like I've gone up against some of the best. I've gone up against some of the best in this game, he said. Aaron Donald literally is the best I've ever seen. Amazing player. So we'll see about that matchup and more cities right? There had great respect for that Rams defense That is a Super Bowl again, not a Super Bowl caliber defense. That's a Super Bowl winning defense. What they're going up against top seed. And the Packers are dialed in and they're loaded and they've got some weapons down like Aaron Rodgers to me is a lock for the M V. P, no matter what, he should win it, but it's not necessarily accurate or fair to say he's got no help around him. He's got some weapons. Now he's got some guys could make some place for sure. He's got an extremely physical tight end in my city's Lewis. Not too late for you to get through. Gonna wrap this thing. Also, I do owe you in a teepee. Rome. I lived on Grand Avenue in 1990. I listened to you since your days on 6 90. I love Yu. San Diego stories Rockies or cast read. Chuck Martin San Diego. That's a great question, right? Totally different places. Totally different places. But when I lived Chuck, When I lived in PB, I would hit both those places depending on what I needed. Remember, I lived across the street from Rockies. So if I want to get cheeseburger, I would go there. If I want to go salad, believe it or not. Go to cast read for sound. Eric Musselman and I went to CASS Street back in the day. Because he must Had San Diego roots. He must play basketball, the University of San Diego so he would come back in the summer time so he must and I had a couple of pops it CASS Street. So the answer is Rocky's or CASS Street. The answer is yes. Jim Mose. Have the police. Ever been to your house for any reason. Question me. Think of the cops ever. Yes. Yes. Alarm goes off. Police have themselves an army and so is bad, too. It's like Ah! We had issues and one of our houses with the alarm. You know whether it was the wind whatever. We just had issues, and they just come on by and it always feel like you had nothing going on just the alarm. Just the alarm. Back. We're gonna be like the ultimate family that cried Wolf one day we're going to need them and they're not coming around. All right. It's like there's an alarm going off. Yeah. Dispatch, Who is it? Rome? Yeah. Uh, yeah, It's nothing. Don't you think maybe better swing on over there? Yeah, we have 30 times already. It's their alarm. Now There's nothing there. Trust me. No, they did not come by when I came out of my own garage and slammed into my wife's car. I did not have to file the police report the official police report in the intersection because the actual intersil in my driveway and it did not involve another person, but it didn't have another car. Which I own. I own both cars. I got into a two car wreck involving one person and dual ownership. Did not call that one in.

Coach Eric Musselman on Kobe and Razorbacks
"We walk into your back. I really delighted to welcome in coach. Eric musclemen from the University of Arkansas. Huge win over the weekend and the big twelve challenge a lot of very impressive. Wins as Arkansas seemingly Back again rolling along some wins earlier over a VALPO Georgia Tech Indiana and a nice run. We we had a guest on few minutes ago covers Kentucky instead the atmosphere At Fayetteville last week when the cats were there was as crazy as any He has witnessed in a very long time coach. First of all. Thank you very much for being with us. And congratulations educations on all you've done. No it's not over but It's quite a start. Thanks so much for having me on Paul really appreciate it before I talk about the razorbacks Certainly grew up the the son of an NBA. Coach you've Treistman head coach in the NBA and an assistant Elsewhere I just the whole world is you know is is mourning the death of Kobe. Brian and we were all interested in your thoughts on spectacular. Life had you know the I was fortunate to work for the Los Angeles Lakers and I was the head coach for their d league team. One Night I came out of the practice facility. We had played a game or games. Were we're actually in the Lakers practice facility. There was only one car in the parking lot. It was Kobe. Bryant's I went to my car. He rolled down his window. Said coaches or anyone else in the building. It was about eleven o'clock at night ten thirty at night. Whatever I said no just the security guards in there and he goes okay? I said Kobe what you could've come in there. You know I was the only we went in there for the last forty five minutes the last hour and he said No. I didn't want anybody in the building when I go in there to shoot in. His focus was incredible. His disciplined as a player was was incredible and just think about the competitive nature of him and just such a sad sad day for the entire basketball community yesterday. Eh and coach. You've lived that life And understand it but You know for such a big league. it just seemed like such such a small family Yesterday when this news broke will it really is. I mean when you think about the impact because when you're either playing in the League or coaching in the League or referee Rian in the League. You have so many stories. I mean there was one night where we had a defensive game. Plan the first quarter we were going to force koby has left the second quarter. We're going to force him to his right right and then he came up right before the third quarter is going to start and he said hey coach what are you gonNa do now play me straight up and then there was. There was a little bit of a pause and he goes. That ain't GonNa work either. Good luck with that. So you know He. He had a personality and just to see since he's retired the relationship that he had with his family. Okay and how much a part of his daughter's life was really really cool but a tragic tragic day for for for the basketball world and certainly for all for all the people that were on that helicopter. Certainly appreciate your thoughts on that. I do want to concentrate on the razorbacks because Your fan base. So we could see it Saturday And we've seen it all year are really excited Just overall thoughts on. I know it wasn't going to be easy and it's not over yet. I don't I know there's a coach. The season has a long way to go but just talk about the journey so far. Yeah we had a great non conference in it and it was kind of like you know the crowds kept building and building. We you know we lost one game in our in our non conference slate had three True Road Games and then once we got to. SEC play the the momentum and the crowds were sold out every weekend the Kentucky atmosphere. I've I've been a part of basketball for really long time. Having been a partner party with with my father. When he coached at the University of Minnesota and they had sellouts there in nineteen thousand seat Arena Williams arena? But I don't know if I've ever seen a crowd with so so much energy and enthusiasm as what we saw when we played Kentucky here and We had a great crowd for our Tcu game as as well and You know the momentum is just continues to Kinda grow and it's been really really need to be a small part of of our fans enthusiasm and at this point Records or maybe a little bit. Deceiving your record is pretty pretty good but there is such a gauntlet Head How do you feel the razorbacks? Our position for the month of February and obviously march will really Paul like I mentioned we. We did our job and non conference and now we're in conference play and it's the same everywhere whether it's big ten. SEC ACC every conference game is really really hard. And there's so many games that come down to the last two minutes and really it's going to be you know. How can we close games? Can we keep road games. Close and give ourselves a chance chance we have a major deficiency on the on the rebounding part of the game and and and we continue to try to figure out a way to overcome that whether it's with three points shooting pace of play right now. We lead the country in defending the three ball. And we have to do that. Because of how small we we are on the interior interior but We feel good where we are right now but we know that there's so much basketball to be played and really you can throw out what's happened right now because because there is still a large portion of of conference play still to be determined as a coach everyone has different methodology in terms of looking at the season whether it's the first part of the non conference and then obviously breaking up what you have to deal with in in the arduous road of the SEC. H- How do you game plan in it back in the off season as you look at the schedule and and what's it like once it gets going. We'll really Paul but we do as soon as the schedule comes out is is I huddle up with a a couple of our staff members that have been with the Nevada. We go game by game win. Loss win-loss just kind of try to figure out what that number would look like for us us at the end of the year right now. We're plus one on what we had done earlier. We don't we don't share that with anybody but but we you know the the goal of everybody not really before you even step on the floor for non conference is how do you get into the big dance. And how are you part of March madness and there's so much to to be played Still and so much to be determined But again it all comes down. I think in conference play. How can you win win the close games because almost every night? You're you know it comes down to those last three or four minutes of a game. It seems like just as a casual fan. I'm watching all the Games on Saturday. And I'm like going consultee. Make a free throw. I know coaches wonder about wonder the same thing don't they there's no question free throw becomes number one free throw attempts become a big part for each team but then converting free throws become a huge part especially in close close games and we've actually improved as a free throw shooting team although we dipped a little bit sense conference play a started. But there's no question all the little things limiting your turnovers in conference play converting so you're free throws not having live ball turnovers. All those things become really really important. PEDESTRIAN QUESTION ABOUT FREE THROWS I. I know it's easy for me to just sit at home with popcorn In in my feet up saying how come how come. They can't make free throws they've been doing this their whole life but explained to the audience. It is why it's not so easy under the under the gun. Well I think one pressure you know anytime you step up to the line. Depending on the time the score of the game fatigue fatigue could play a factor if a guy's played thirteen or fourteen straight minutes and then he goes to the foul line that can that can have a little bit of impact on it whether there's a dead ball prior to you stepping up to the foul line just as you hear a field goal kicker. Mike get iced as a free. Throw shooter get ICED But a lot of it comes down to mental toughness. I believe from the foul line. And then obviously some guys are just better better foul shooters based on rotation and and then it really becomes important that you have a routine every time you step up to the foul line as well coach. I I know that you you knew what you were getting into. And for someone who has coached coach in the NBA. And obviously you're run a couple of years ago and the NCAA. Tournament was epic I I don't need to ask you. How tough the SEC Zia's but we're we're we're you surprised by anything you've seen so far as league play has Got Underway I. I don't think so Paul I mean I knew. Do you know I came back from the from the League meetings in Florida and my wife said how did it go and I said well I looked around the table and I'm gonNA write. This coach has been to a final. Oh for this guy's been to X. Amount NCAA tournaments and then. I said you know somebody in this room is gonNA finish last place. And there's a lot of great coaches in in this league. There's a lot of talented players. You know I kind of knew what I was getting into. I mean spent one years and assistant coach at at Lsu. But I'm I'm such a well coached league and a team that's or league that's full of athletic players that play with with great intensity and that's the one thing. Is You know every night that you play you get somebody going hard. And and there's no gimmes and and that's to be expected at a power five conference and especially at conference like the SEC. Finally I I know what you said about looking at the at the schedule and we won't push you anymore on on what you what you saw the razorbacks finishing but how do you define success in year one You know I think as a competitor anywhere you're at whether you're in the mountain west or you're in the SEC. Want to try to make tournament. And if you don't have that as a goal you know. You probably shouldn't be coaching having said that you know we are realistic that we were predicted. preseason to finish eleventh. We didn't have much respect coming into the season and and there's still a lot of basketball to be played. I mean there's a lot of teams with that three in three record and so every game's important and the one thing that we've done a really good job of Paul just kind of taking one game at a time. I know that's coach. Speak but we really maybe more than than than the four previous years. Since I've been coaching we really have just said. Hey let us worry about the next forty forty minutes on our schedule because this roster does have deficiencies especially from a height standpoint and we dealt with a little bit of small injuries of late as well also. We just need to worry about. How can we play and compete against South Carolina on Wednesday night? Great to have you on. And congratulations on the success. Success Hope soon. Thanks for having me
