"Coverage and w b a p dot com E just want to get Baylor China credit. I thought that, you know, they played phenomenal tonight, especially offensively again tonight. Just have to get Baylor credit. Kentucky's coach Eric Musselman. After they lose to the Bear's last night up in Indianapolis. Good morning from our Mercedes Benz of Plano sports system, See Lamb of the Bears did it. They punch their ticket to the final Four first time since 1950 that came out hot went on to beat the Razorbacks, 81 to 72. Next up for Baylor, another team from Texas on Saturday. What was your take on what happened on that non call? Well, I think that there was a foul on but it happened even before they should. They went into her shot. "And i'm i don't buy it and i'm did. It's obvious that pro betters. Don't buy and you kind of hit this perfectly. It's like just because villanova beat a twelve and a thirteen seat like here they are. I don't think they solve some of those issues in. It's why this game got steamed out from five and a half to the key of seven and it might even go a tick higher so you know. Jay writes going to have to figure out something in this week off. And i never liked to doubt him because he's that good but like even being one of the best teams in the big east. Novas is you know not really good in so it's probably going to be predominantly in the half court here and this is a game where you're probably going to feel the loss your point guard so that'll be pretty interesting here. Because whether it's it's arch or justin moore running point. I think david mitchell's gonna make life miserable for them in the half court. He's got a knack for really like disrupting these offenses and i think. There's some other areas here. Were were baylor really. Has some advantages. offensively. I don't know how villanova stops riley baylor shoots it the three ball better than anybody in the country. Villanova's outside the top two thirty five and three point defense on the inside villanova ninety four in near proximity defense only blocks about seven percent shots at the rim. Baylor's probably going to control that area. Right they're going to control the paint on offense inside so to me. It's baylor pass. It's always tough for me todd. And you're better sometimes with some of the the handicapping angles here. But it's like you have a team off their best performance of the season. And i know a lot of people won't believe that but if you look at their performance based upon market expectation that was villanova's very best game of the season against north texas. And now all of a sudden you're playing the best competition that you've seen all year simultaneously right and the market is interesting because effectively. What happens is like nova gets this tiny boost dominating north taxes so you have to increase their power rating for a win post. Gillespie but it's almost impossible to repeat that level of play because that's you're very best performance this season and so now you're giving nova this boost despite knowing you know it's pretty certain they're not gonna reach that level again and now they go and face the tough team they play all season. So i i respect right and he's going to probably have a good game plan and he's a great xs and os coach. I'm not sure it's gonna be enough here. I mean look at villanova. You talked about how the exceeded market expectations. Pain average one point. Four points per possession. They were fifteen of thirty from beyond the arc. Sixteen of twenty six inside the arc simply incredible. They turned the ball over six times. Meanwhile north texas still average more than a point per possession. And i think all of villanova or not all. I shouldn't say it's probably not fair. A lot of their success over the last couple of years has been attributed to how good they are defensively. And you mentioned it this team when you dig into some of their defensive metrics a far cry from what we've seen in the past and i think that could be on full display in terms of getting exposed by baylor team who's figuring things out in reminding us. Why for long stretch of the season. They were mentioned. The same. Exact breath is gonzaga's prohibitive favorites to ultimately cut down the nets without question. And i think that's part of the massive discrepancy here is because we said coming into the tournament. It's always tough to say this because you know baylor's or one seat but the perception in the betting market and we saw some of their numbers was like ham. Baylor wasn't very good down the stretch. We don't know what they're going to be. And we almost said this about as well when you have that much. Talent defense is an effort thing. So it's almost like we're still. I know you know. We saw them exceed expectation the first weekend but like here we go again. Like baylor's defense has the ability because we've seen it to be the number one defense in the entire country and that's what they were for a long stretch to begin the season. Even when they went into the covid twenty one day laps they went into that eighth and defensive efficiency. And so that seven-game stretch that i mentioned really distorted some of their numbers. Now they're back down after this past weekend. Thirty seven so they're ceiling is significantly higher than villanova's as well. I agree with us move. It's tough to take now at the key number of seven but this could be a game where you know it could get ugly here for villanova if if baylor is as good as i think you and i both believe they can be exactly and i agree normally if you were talking about these. Two teams are coaches. I was gonna say having equal talent. You'd obviously give jay wright that nod the code only bridged. Coaching only bridge a gap when you have nba caliber talent. That baylor does. And i quite frankly jeremiah. Robinson has been outstanding tournament. But i don't think he matches up with the trio of guards that bailed throw at them when we look at the other game in that region pain. Of course it's oral. Roberts against the aforementioned arkansas razorbacks. You're looking at arkansas. And eleven and a half point favorite in this game. Total one fifty nine at fangio sportsbook. These two teams had the unique opportunity to play each other earlier this year. Back on december twentieth. When you look at that game arkansas closing one thousand nine and a half point favorite. At home they win the game. Eighty-seven seventy six. But.

Jay Sixteen seven-game Roberts Gillespie riley baylor december twentieth Robinson david mitchell one point Two teams three point eleven and a half point two teams north texas Baylor one Thirty seven both ninety four

"Red Raiders down, too, and in the backcourt. Bringing it into the front court right now. Tyler Edwards 10 seconds to play in the ball game. Edwards on the right side, with it still trying to weave through traffic out here top of the art four seconds. Three drives blue mystic Rebound. Arkansas game over Razorbacks are headed for the sweet 16. Oh, it's been a while 1996 last time that's happened Westwood one on the call there, and I know our next guest was sweating. Not just that attempted. Also previous one of the rim is well on the Red Raiders Had a look at the 10 couldn't put it down. Ah, hard fought win a great win. And coach Eric Musselman of Arkansas Year too, by the way for the backs. He's with us here on Tiki and Tierney, CBS Sports Radio KOCE doing buddy. What's happening? I'm doing great. I need some sleep. Didn't the adrenaline from last night was insane. But it was a it was incredible game. Uh, Texas Tech, so well coached there so physical, they have great toughness on did it was It was a street flight on the backboards last night, and there was no easy baskets. I can tell you that for me their side. How's the growing The quads? The Handy's You clubbed up on the table? Everything you didn't pull anything, did you, coach? Didn't pull anything. But I do have a very sore right Achilles tendon this morning. I've already done rehab twice. Nothing. Tourney just old age on Ben. I have a little apple as well. So Yeah, I probably should have, you know, reacted a little bit different in a little calmer. It's okay. You don't need to act your age man. Double a tournament. You go to that You go to the sweet 16. I love this. You know, Coach before we get into the games and like where you're headed, you're playing or Robert's in the next round. Um, this has been such an odd Season. But forget the season. For now, the tournament has had to have been odd and felt odd. How review all handled and manage the don't know that the lack of normalcy in Indianapolis Well, you know, it's it's funny because up until you know really coming to the to this, you know, whatever you want to call it a bubble or an isolated type situation We kind of we've done. We've been fairly normal. You know, we've only had one player missing two games. We We really We only lost one game all year, and it wasn't due to our rent. It was due to another program. So we got our full slate of schedule other than one game our practices. We didn't really miss any practice time. And then we come here on. Do you know what When you when you when you start thinking about mental health and like we're isolated, I know is, you know, like last night getting on the team bus I could only wave to my daughter, My son and my wife and I've never wanted to hold my wife's hand so bad just just to be close to family members, and it's the same thing with our players, but but we all understand. It. Being a part of this is really cool, and we want to do everything we can to get to a finish line, and I think that's how everybody feels even teams that have been eliminated. Is. How do we just figure out how to keep this great event going? The N C. A. A is done an incredible job. Um, it would be a word really surprised and shocked me. If we didn't get through a finish line, just based on how safe everything has been inside of what we call an N C a a bubble. We're all hoping and we're certainly old, praying. There's no doubt about that. We want to see this thing without another blemish. We had the one blemish and that's heartbreaking for VCU. Let's hope that that's the isolated incident right there were talking to Eric Musselman, head coach of the Arkansas Razorbacks. So you took down the mighty Red Raiders of Colgate. Around one. You beat the Red Raiders and round two. You know what's crazy to be coach? I don't know how you process is right. But I do ST John's games and I noticed I do this a lot of half time like I look at the numbers right and I'll try to extrapolated like if the team is up, but playing poorly. Well, okay, that that's that's good if the team is down On not playing well statistically to me, that's an avenue to come back. You guys and a lot of this is because the Texas Tak their defense is phenomenal. You shot 41% overall 24 24 from threes. Weren't great at the stripe about 70% on Lee 10 assists, so's you processes I would imagine you're saying, Man, we beat a really great program without playing very well. But is there a flip side to that coach? Well, you know, it's so interesting. Having grown up as with a father, who was a coach he always used to talk about. There was three runs in a game. Can you control two of the three runs and in my brief experience in college, which it really hasn't been that long? We've had some incredible comebacks. Actually, every wind that I've had, which I guess now would be three. In this tournament. Actually, I think it's for my fault out of the four games. We've been down double digits in in all four of those games, and I think what you've got to try toe Express to your players is Hey, you just you gotta figure out a way to win the game on that particular night games. We're gonna have different themes that different story lines throughout the game and you just cannot get too high. If you're playing well and a half, but you can't get too low. You know if you don't play up to your standards, so, um, just I think the big thing is, How do you play as productive as you can, you know, through 40 minutes of play, and that's how you can survive. Coach. How are you handling these next three days Where you guys aren't you're there because you gotta change hotels. It Z all moving parts is like and I can imagine how logistically confusing and not even frustrating, but it is what it is because you're going on that sweet 16. But How are you managing that? What do you say into your players? What's practice going to be like? If there is any time for practice? What do you guys doing for the next couple of days before your next round? We're definitely practicing week how I can promise you Arkansas's practice. I don't know what everybody else is doing. But we've already had four film sessions, although are far film sessions. Only last between four and 12 minutes. Part of it's because their coach, meaning me, has a D D and wants it to go because quick as possible, In all seriousness, our players You know, I think if you can hit him with short bursts of film, it's really productive. But we did have a walk through. Um, you know, we didn't guys didn't even have their shoes on. But we did walk through sets of Orel Roberts and and and and how we might want to defend a plan A plan B on their picket rolls and And and then tonight I'll start in productive plans see, just in case things don't go as planned, but there's a lot I think right now being in the situation we're in. You can actually threat. Morshed so now because there's not anything else to do, um, you know, we did get to go to a baseball stadium. Today is a team. We played a little bit of soccer a little bit of bad mitten and I had to call it off because we did bring a football out there and I looked over and devote Davis. Our Star defensive guard was was running past routes and Jalen Kate are starting point guard was defending him. They actually ran into the badminton poll. That boy I say we're all headed back. We've had enough yard time. Let's head back. As quick as possible to the hotel boys back on the bus back on the bus. So so, Erica, you know, I'm curious. How does this work You just mentioned you start to introduce him sets and get a sense of what? What Orel Roberts likes to run defender the pick and roll, etcetera. But do you go back to just the two games that or Roberts has played in the tournament? Do you kind of piece together what they've done the entire season? How does that break down for an unfamiliar opponent? Yes. So today we watched all of them because we played them in a nonconference game. We scheduled them at our place. We were actually down 10 points at halftime. So our players automatically have great respect for them, But we watched all of their made baskets. Today. We kind of dissected. Where are holes were on Ben. We started to go through made baskets against Ohio State. On Then we will get to, um you know, we'll probably go back to their conference tournament as well on baby Pull some clips of how Somebody in their conference such a South Dakota coach by Todd Lee how they guarded Orel Roberts. So there's a lot of detail that goes into it. One of our coaches charge of their sets..

Todd Lee Orel Roberts Erica Tyler Edwards Roberts Jalen Kate 41% Red Raiders Eric Musselman 10 seconds one game Edwards 10 points today 40 minutes Lee 1996 two games Davis Ohio State

Arkansas Head Coach, Eric Musselman, Discusses His Team's Success This Year

"Know there's a game coming up tomorrow but if we could just get some final thoughts on north we're violating the twenty four hour rule or not. But how does it feel to. I mean your fans are buzzing right. Now they've been excited all year but that really brought it home the other night. I mean the thing that that we're probably the most proud of paul is just the fact you know we got thumped tuscaloosa and we got beat before that at lsu When we were in bad rooch pretty pretty bad too and and We were able to bounce back between those two games. We had a really physical practice with weighted vests. And and you know. I'm not sure we had enough legs To play the fast place style of play that that obama plays and coach you know gets his guys really get out and run and and You know looking back. We knew that that practice would you know would would maybe set us back slightly but we're trying to think long term. We had a great environment. I mean we. You know i understand. It's a pandemic but we had a really good student section. Our crowd was good. There's there's there's been a lot of excitement over the last few weeks with the way that the team is played and and it was a big game. Th you know anytime you get a top ten cheap You know and you can you can you number one. You don't get a lot of opportunities to play top ten teams then when you do and you're able to to get a win. It is a big deal for the fans at former players boosters and and for the student athletes to reward them for for a lot of hard work but we have incredible respect coach oats and his team and we know that you know they're one of the top teams in the entire country so it was a big win. But you're right you gotta turn the page. And that's part of your team is having maturity when you do win a big game two to turn the page and get ready for your next game. I mean you're now final two days of february and and certainly you're going to be going through this now. You're going to be going through this in the sec tournament and ultimately in the nc double a. tournament for for a program that has not won a lot of big games lately. How drill that into their their minds. That this was fantastic. But it doesn't mean anything tomorrow. I mean i think you know all you can do. Really paul's just continue to talk. educate You know. I told him today that you know. I'm a lot older than them. I'm getting getting towards being an old man. And and sometimes you gotta listen to your elders a little bit on on some of these things that you talk about that you know the game you know tomorrow when we play l. s. u. the prior game against lsu doesn't matter and our pr- prior win against alabama doesn't matter there's forty minutes you've got to go out you got to be focused and You know it's. I think that that just kind of how it is and and You know the good thing is having gone through it nevada. You know none of those guys that we had there had really been through it either But i think the big thing is just understanding that each day. You've got to continue to get better. I mean even you know with with with three games to go now. We're talking about how we can get better. We're talking about improving our practice habits. We we do a to onto pick and roll defensive drill today that i'm sure they weren't really excited about doing a two onto pick and roll drill that might be. You would consider a training camp drill but we want to get better and anybody that aspires to play beyond college. Basketball should should want to become a better pick and roll defensive player so hopefully you know you can get your guys excited to understand that you know you're not just doing it for the lead these last three games and then tournament situations you're doing it for the longevity of your career as

Coach Eric Musselman on Kobe and Razorbacks

"We walk into your back. I really delighted to welcome in coach. Eric musclemen from the University of Arkansas. Huge win over the weekend and the big twelve challenge a lot of very impressive. Wins as Arkansas seemingly Back again rolling along some wins earlier over a VALPO Georgia Tech Indiana and a nice run. We we had a guest on few minutes ago covers Kentucky instead the atmosphere At Fayetteville last week when the cats were there was as crazy as any He has witnessed in a very long time coach. First of all. Thank you very much for being with us. And congratulations educations on all you've done. No it's not over but It's quite a start. Thanks so much for having me on Paul really appreciate it before I talk about the razorbacks Certainly grew up the the son of an NBA. Coach you've Treistman head coach in the NBA and an assistant Elsewhere I just the whole world is you know is is mourning the death of Kobe. Brian and we were all interested in your thoughts on spectacular. Life had you know the I was fortunate to work for the Los Angeles Lakers and I was the head coach for their d league team. One Night I came out of the practice facility. We had played a game or games. Were we're actually in the Lakers practice facility. There was only one car in the parking lot. It was Kobe. Bryant's I went to my car. He rolled down his window. Said coaches or anyone else in the building. It was about eleven o'clock at night ten thirty at night. Whatever I said no just the security guards in there and he goes okay? I said Kobe what you could've come in there. You know I was the only we went in there for the last forty five minutes the last hour and he said No. I didn't want anybody in the building when I go in there to shoot in. His focus was incredible. His disciplined as a player was was incredible and just think about the competitive nature of him and just such a sad sad day for the entire basketball community yesterday. Eh and coach. You've lived that life And understand it but You know for such a big league. it just seemed like such such a small family Yesterday when this news broke will it really is. I mean when you think about the impact because when you're either playing in the League or coaching in the League or referee Rian in the League. You have so many stories. I mean there was one night where we had a defensive game. Plan the first quarter we were going to force koby has left the second quarter. We're going to force him to his right right and then he came up right before the third quarter is going to start and he said hey coach what are you gonNa do now play me straight up and then there was. There was a little bit of a pause and he goes. That ain't GonNa work either. Good luck with that. So you know He. He had a personality and just to see since he's retired the relationship that he had with his family. Okay and how much a part of his daughter's life was really really cool but a tragic tragic day for for for the basketball world and certainly for all for all the people that were on that helicopter. Certainly appreciate your thoughts on that. I do want to concentrate on the razorbacks because Your fan base. So we could see it Saturday And we've seen it all year are really excited Just overall thoughts on. I know it wasn't going to be easy and it's not over yet. I don't I know there's a coach. The season has a long way to go but just talk about the journey so far. Yeah we had a great non conference in it and it was kind of like you know the crowds kept building and building. We you know we lost one game in our in our non conference slate had three True Road Games and then once we got to. SEC play the the momentum and the crowds were sold out every weekend the Kentucky atmosphere. I've I've been a part of basketball for really long time. Having been a partner party with with my father. When he coached at the University of Minnesota and they had sellouts there in nineteen thousand seat Arena Williams arena? But I don't know if I've ever seen a crowd with so so much energy and enthusiasm as what we saw when we played Kentucky here and We had a great crowd for our Tcu game as as well and You know the momentum is just continues to Kinda grow and it's been really really need to be a small part of of our fans enthusiasm and at this point Records or maybe a little bit. Deceiving your record is pretty pretty good but there is such a gauntlet Head How do you feel the razorbacks? Our position for the month of February and obviously march will really Paul like I mentioned we. We did our job and non conference and now we're in conference play and it's the same everywhere whether it's big ten. SEC ACC every conference game is really really hard. And there's so many games that come down to the last two minutes and really it's going to be you know. How can we close games? Can we keep road games. Close and give ourselves a chance chance we have a major deficiency on the on the rebounding part of the game and and and we continue to try to figure out a way to overcome that whether it's with three points shooting pace of play right now. We lead the country in defending the three ball. And we have to do that. Because of how small we we are on the interior interior but We feel good where we are right now but we know that there's so much basketball to be played and really you can throw out what's happened right now because because there is still a large portion of of conference play still to be determined as a coach everyone has different methodology in terms of looking at the season whether it's the first part of the non conference and then obviously breaking up what you have to deal with in in the arduous road of the SEC. H- How do you game plan in it back in the off season as you look at the schedule and and what's it like once it gets going. We'll really Paul but we do as soon as the schedule comes out is is I huddle up with a a couple of our staff members that have been with the Nevada. We go game by game win. Loss win-loss just kind of try to figure out what that number would look like for us us at the end of the year right now. We're plus one on what we had done earlier. We don't we don't share that with anybody but but we you know the the goal of everybody not really before you even step on the floor for non conference is how do you get into the big dance. And how are you part of March madness and there's so much to to be played Still and so much to be determined But again it all comes down. I think in conference play. How can you win win the close games because almost every night? You're you know it comes down to those last three or four minutes of a game. It seems like just as a casual fan. I'm watching all the Games on Saturday. And I'm like going consultee. Make a free throw. I know coaches wonder about wonder the same thing don't they there's no question free throw becomes number one free throw attempts become a big part for each team but then converting free throws become a huge part especially in close close games and we've actually improved as a free throw shooting team although we dipped a little bit sense conference play a started. But there's no question all the little things limiting your turnovers in conference play converting so you're free throws not having live ball turnovers. All those things become really really important. PEDESTRIAN QUESTION ABOUT FREE THROWS I. I know it's easy for me to just sit at home with popcorn In in my feet up saying how come how come. They can't make free throws they've been doing this their whole life but explained to the audience. It is why it's not so easy under the under the gun. Well I think one pressure you know anytime you step up to the line. Depending on the time the score of the game fatigue fatigue could play a factor if a guy's played thirteen or fourteen straight minutes and then he goes to the foul line that can that can have a little bit of impact on it whether there's a dead ball prior to you stepping up to the foul line just as you hear a field goal kicker. Mike get iced as a free. Throw shooter get ICED But a lot of it comes down to mental toughness. I believe from the foul line. And then obviously some guys are just better better foul shooters based on rotation and and then it really becomes important that you have a routine every time you step up to the foul line as well coach. I I know that you you knew what you were getting into. And for someone who has coached coach in the NBA. And obviously you're run a couple of years ago and the NCAA. Tournament was epic I I don't need to ask you. How tough the SEC Zia's but we're we're we're you surprised by anything you've seen so far as league play has Got Underway I. I don't think so Paul I mean I knew. Do you know I came back from the from the League meetings in Florida and my wife said how did it go and I said well I looked around the table and I'm gonNA write. This coach has been to a final. Oh for this guy's been to X. Amount NCAA tournaments and then. I said you know somebody in this room is gonNA finish last place. And there's a lot of great coaches in in this league. There's a lot of talented players. You know I kind of knew what I was getting into. I mean spent one years and assistant coach at at Lsu. But I'm I'm such a well coached league and a team that's or league that's full of athletic players that play with with great intensity and that's the one thing. Is You know every night that you play you get somebody going hard. And and there's no gimmes and and that's to be expected at a power five conference and especially at conference like the SEC. Finally I I know what you said about looking at the at the schedule and we won't push you anymore on on what you what you saw the razorbacks finishing but how do you define success in year one You know I think as a competitor anywhere you're at whether you're in the mountain west or you're in the SEC. Want to try to make tournament. And if you don't have that as a goal you know. You probably shouldn't be coaching having said that you know we are realistic that we were predicted. preseason to finish eleventh. We didn't have much respect coming into the season and and there's still a lot of basketball to be played. I mean there's a lot of teams with that three in three record and so every game's important and the one thing that we've done a really good job of Paul just kind of taking one game at a time. I know that's coach. Speak but we really maybe more than than than the four previous years. Since I've been coaching we really have just said. Hey let us worry about the next forty forty minutes on our schedule because this roster does have deficiencies especially from a height standpoint and we dealt with a little bit of small injuries of late as well also. We just need to worry about. How can we play and compete against South Carolina on Wednesday night? Great to have you on. And congratulations on the success. Success Hope soon. Thanks for having me

I think that there's going to be one less, unbeaten and that's going to be Kansas by the time the NIT figures itself out, well if they can keep it at seventy point game. I think I think it's Kansas disfavor. They'd just got too many weapons Jared Vic, I mean, his last last week is absolutely been absolutely incredible. But you know, the finding Barnes is new mentioned Kentucky they will got awfully yesterday. I mean defensively I mean that a record nineteen threes made against him in refereed the most ever in refereeing yesterday against the fighting connects via Mayan. They've just got to figure. I mean, just talk real quickly about contain. They gotta figure out who their three dudes are. Here's the problem. They need they need quite green shot making right now, they need PJ washed its quick this on the baseline and I've asleep re Travis but those are three their worst defenders. So they've got to figure out some type of rotation and get there. To have that swag. And that confidence. That they had it the Bahamas, quite honestly. Now that wasn't the same type of pressure but Kentucky's they're not playing while right now and played well yet early in the season. It's it's early this early. It's early, but it gets laid early some sometimes it gets laid early. I know your own one in your tennis matches against you is in the Bahamas now, I know that's disappointing. You are only one against me on the golf course in the Bahamas. So I hope at least you have you know, three or four really two games. "Who do you like? If it's close I like Zach Novell to make shot for Gonzaga. I think he's really god-like Duke to win the thing. But man, I know there's a lot of guys to talk about with Kazakh. But all I did was watch him unload on the in the first two rounds at the NC double A tournament. Clutch clutch Cunanan, Chicago, I like Duke. I mean, let's be honest. There's nothing that Duke has done since Kentucky game to say. Hey, look, they're not as good as they played that night. They are the kid Williamson. Obviously, I would love to see do Kazak though. That would be must see TV do Ken's aga- with Walton doing it without assured on we'd be the highlight of the entire year. We need to shut it down. You had to go there. You just had to go out. I think Auburn Duke will be interesting game. But yeah. Auburn in the play five out every macklemore changes their defense for sure if you look at the numbers when he got hurt their defense, really really struggled. They could really shoot the three that little guard Jarrett. Harper is hard to keep the lane. I'm sue Brown could really shoot it. But they can say became I think the match of the interesting Brandon Clark the transfers from San Jose State. He is long quicken after leading. And I know killing till he's not there and that hurts them but Clark runs always in the play hard to keep off the. Glass gotta maturity about him really hush merge. Really improved. Now watched him the other day. His footwork is so good. He drives it he can shoot it. He can post it. He runs the court change your our defenses trying to keep the Goff outs. You gotta take them out of transition. You gotta take them off the glass, and then you know, you gotta figure out a way you gotta scrape both off Jones I to me if someone's going to beat you make Jones speaking I'd almost put Jones's man once he gives it up right in the middle eight, and he's going to be the double guy. He's going to be the guy at it's gonna shrink to court muck it up trying to take away potential take charges Jones gets twenty beaches. So be it. But you can't let those two guys. That's my just kind of like that on that that's old school that's old school, gene. Katie, bob. Knight basketball, help off the guy put him in the middle. Stay in front. Make him score over you. And if he goes to the rim take charge. There you go, folks. Now, you go there. Cerebral. And then how about the I love the and growing up in New York taking the train to the garden from the it's still station to the Grand Central station, go to the old guard and go to the new garden. I mean, there's history now entities at the Barclays which takes away from the little bit to mate, but you've got big time programs Kansas who's number two in the country dropped one despite beating Michigan state, really talented. And I mean, even though they got freshman, backward up beach Lawson Caribbean passer, I've seen the book as a book union Gerald Vic every time. He shoots it. You think it's going in? And then you've got Tennessee Tennessee with the Admiral grant Williams said Jordan bone playing really well who do you like India? The and I take I like goes to team Seth I'm wondering about Louisville VJ king. I think is really good. We talked about him last week. I just don't think they've played great. You know? But I do think this. I I do think that a big stage Louisville will play. Well. But look, I'm so happy for Rick pines. I honest to God. I I really he's team is a potential title team at Tennessee. His team is a potential SEC champ. His team is right there with Kentucky and probably will be there the entire time. So at because it seemed like once he got to Texas sky. He got a stigma that I can't coach I can recruit he can't coach that's total crap to to your point quick. Yeah. It is a joke. Quin grimes. I'm just so impressed with him said I, but I I'm I'm gonna take kind of seeing this..

"But she's probably bad as as as important anything that we've done outside of the basketball court guys spent a great job with your social media. Now, you could get some people to come and play you guys. I mean, how difficult is scheduled. Scheduling it's been really difficult set that think that it was interesting because everyone said when you make an NCAA tournament or when the program gets twenty wins it'll become easier. I actually thought you know year. One was really the everybody wanted to play as well. We got a job they were coming off seven division one which next you became a little harder that following. You was was was really hard. And that's when we went onto shell. Gotcha plays like WCC teams on the road. But it was a heady late schedule. And then this year after we made the Sweet Sixteen scheduling actually became easier. We might not have got the home in home to start at Nevada. But we have gotten home and homes with USC with the university of. And then neutral site game state staple that we we got a home at home with like if it started here this year. I'm so I think our schedule has really really increased it's become slightly easier. As we as we got that pretty doggone good to at least have the perception of being, you know, a top twenty five or whatever program. So for us. It's it has become slightly easier. Although, you know, we played really well at home and a lot of teams are trying to get us on neutral sites or again to start at the replace. I well most we appreciate you coming on in in his fun. Watching your team. It's from watching your program, build it's fun watching how you creating an image in a brand of Nevada basketball. You know, when people think of Nevada back in the day, they thought of I'm sitting running rebelled swell. Now people think of midnight basketball, obviously, they think in the university of add in what? You're doing and the group you have. So we pre she especially on your birthday, especially on a game day, especially after yesterday, you hanging out Kevin Hart. You know, boxes that we would actually wake you up even though I know those sleep through the season, much and hang out with us. So I appreciate it, man. Keep going out before watching you guys coach eggs for having me on. Thanks for all you do for college basketball. It's awesome. Keep up your great work. 'cause it's so powerful to the gay push out this way, you're Lance pretty good field. Who do you? Like it lands. I like, Wisconsin. It'd be a Homer here said I think Oklahoma Christian Tom James is going to be twenty six and night. I think Stanford has much Florida should be pushed should be damned. Good set guys. But Jalen Hudson. I got a lot of guys back, but I like Wisconsin I watching them and they were so good at Xavier. I'm gonna take the fighting, Ethan, apps and go bad your sense. What do you like, I think I like gin? I think that that's final could be unbelievable meiomi X files to be first to sixty five. I think he was contemplating a little faster, and I'd love it. Because both of these teams moved the ball move people. Cut hard defend hard. Limit you to one shot. Don't turn it over. That would be terrific and Florida's a little kind of head scratching to me. Keep them announced got to play better. Now, they're playing a freshman point guard internet Martin, I think it'll take time. But I think he'll be good. If they defend Florida on the outside. But I think of Jinnah Wisconsin final to me, it's acquired taste to me would be an acquired taste for me. I would like that final in that would be good basketball for forty minutes. And I'm with you on how 'bout how 'bout? In Maui, by the way, my goal from Allie. Forget about the game. You know, my both marries. Bill, please. Keep your shirt on. Because when you take your shirt off, it's embarrassing. Keep the shirt on Bill clean. And then Bill. Put a little put a little SPF fifty on dome because she might have to the grill on the top of it. But jeez. But I mean, you got you know, which you got over, you know, obviously, those two of the headliners per se you got Kazak on the other half..

"They exhibited that the other night against Iraq. And I think you can see is competent starting to grow and grow with each haven't the energy at your place right now. And I'm watching the game the other night, it's rocking and rolling packed arena. I mean, I think you've answered sold after the season if I'm not correct. What what's that been like, what's what's the keep besides winning connecting with the community? And it's a big thing for you. And I don't know if you've got that through the G league experience or or Danielle's just like the magic wizard behind the the magic. But what kind of things have you guys done to really connect with the community. You know, I think the first thing coach when I think about it is, you know, growing up with my dad at the university of Minnesota. I don't want. He got the job. There attendance was was pathetic. And I remember going around with him. We'd stop into McDonalds for me. To get a quick hamburger after school for foreigners practicing. He our truck was pulling university of Minnesota, basketball shirts and everywhere we went he would pass out. Anniversary of Minnesota golden gopher basketball shorts. So I think he was way ahead of his time for promotion standpoint. When he talked about the nineteen seventies and his pre-game more about. But by the time he had left the university of Minnesota, not only was Williams arena sold out, but showing the hockey arena watching on closed circuit TV, and I think he was a master master promoter from the uniforms to the shoes they or so I had a great person to learn from. And then I think when you go to the chain league, and you go to the CBS USB L, your your teams or programs organizations. The only way they can survi- financially. If you marketing draw fans and we were selling out rapid city, South Dakota. The you gotta get out of the community. You've gone into become accessible, you've gotta do things that you might not warrant when you're tired of every pre-game. I've got outside of our building passing out pizzas or. Hi, five in the student's section because we need that they bring the boys are student section right now, it's actually blown all the players away and our staff. How incredible they've been so through three home games. And we did so them all of our season tickets as far as a season ticket package. So great crowds all over cats houses so far. And but I, but I think the biggest key really it probably is my wife Danielle because I seven nights a week three to four she's out doing some function. She was out again this Saturday. I don't even know where she goes who she speaks to..

"So he's now playing the point guard. So we've added too big. And then we'd ask our core. Three guys to all slide down a position when in today's basketball world, both teams are sliding players up the spot so that they can play with more faster pace and spread teams Donald. So we are we do have a different look we should be much better team than we have in the past. And we certainly should be much better rebound in then we have at the past. Yeah. I think the Martin's your interesting because we talk a lot about Caleb in you know, he's a versatile offensive player. There's no doubt about it. But Cody mock natch, I'm gonna do something. Tomorrow on. In our laps Turner games. They're gonna ask me for kind of a guy that makes other people better. Cody Martin is about as good as signed course in a lot of ways. Is there is because he is versatile. But yet he's such a willing passer and such good passer. Right. There's no question coach. I mean when you talk about Cody bar, you're talking about if people die second look at his assist turnover ratio. It's absolutely amazing. And you take this is a position that he is not played his whole life. And I think that the reason he should be so intriguing to the NBA level is because we're not talking about the superstar or the top five of the team. But then when you start trying to piece together a loss and you start thinking about we have practice injury happened during the course of the season for game. Go we can play so many different positions in practice. He can play the one two three. We have guard the opposing teams best player whether it's a point guard or a four man and so to me because of his versatility because he's a great teammate his practice habits through the charts. When you weren't you've skeleton dry run off it he puts himself in a game locally every single possession. Then he's the all toes pro as far as preparation studying opposing team's been seen the Asha lot of all right bands. Depend like you question that show in my is you talk about complementary guys. I don't know how you could get a better player than him. And I say that really highest deal high regards because you know, it's easier to put points on the board at the college level. And then you go to that might not happen or you might walk right college. And it does translate to the veteran was to some degree. But I think what Cody can translate. He can have a great pro career. Yeah. The NBA league of role players in a couple of ridiculously talented terrific. You know, talents per se. I mean, that's just the way teams of teams are made up. Now, you're talking about George Brown. I mean, here's here's a guy that. Downs on Merican credit. The highest rated player providence ever signed that Nevada. And I ain't you watch you guys play the other night and unites had conversations am I wrong. It seems like he's the light bulbs starting to go on terms on that same transition every high school player has to go through how long can you play hard? How you know? What's your basketball IQ, can we count on you defensively from watching him the other day? It seems like he's starting to figure it out a little bit. Yeah. Joe Jordan is he's gotta high motor really good. Picking up our offense. He's a smart player. I think the biggest thing really coaches is for Jordan is just that weight room at adding strength and put a lot of time in especially in the last month at the half with our strength coach. And and you know, I think the one thing Nevada because we bet a preseason top ten we have out of the gate, maybe a little bit more pressure internally and externally maybe will become a little bit shorter because you have such a focus on how do we win this particular game? I think if you are a middle of the road conference team with you expectation, maybe a freshman plays a little bit more especially early in the year. But we certainly feel like Jordan is going to have an incredible career h continuing to work on his printer shooting, but he's gonna he's got such an incredible soft touch around the rim..

"Mousa been I am all in on the must bus. I just wanna wait. No that I mean, there's no doubt about it. I got both feet in. I'm riding it right through the whole season. But this is a special must bus presentation. Because today is I mush your birthday. And you're kind of hanging out with us. And you have a game today. I was all that work. What you know what? Steph what better person to hang out with and come on your podcast my birthday and game day. Yeah. It doesn't get much better than that. I don't think you like to be doing today. This has got to be NetApp pet. There's no Klay was number one. When I woke up today. The average fan does not understand. What Nevada basketball is all about in in a thumbnail kind of explain what you've been able to do. And who you are. And how you win at At that. nevada. Well, I think the biggest thing really cross Sep was was how do we build this thing as quick as we could? But also have sustainability and try to figure out how in our year four as we kind of looked at this as a four year cycle in college back basketball. How do we build it the proper way get better incrementally year by year? So that we could peak in what now is actually our fourth year. You know, our team is is we we try to be cosmetically pleasing festively defensively, we were pretty doggone. It goodbye. First year while we didn't have offense the players that and you know, coach usually when you got really good offense players. With a little bit. But you got great defenders a lot of those guys aren't great shooters. And so on the one wavering home when we got the job for years ago, they were back to back years route three twenty three forty from three point range. So we wanted to add shooting and having come from the D league. We felt like, you know, the position was basketball. It was really important to have guys that could play multiple positions. And then each year when you kind of go back, and you try to evaluate your team, and reassess it after year one it was how do we get more shooting? Then we addressed that. And then it became, you know, how do we get more depth than we address that? And then it was how do we get more size? And and so each of these off seasons we've tried to fill a hole that we've had because we have had holes. And now, we do have depth. We do have size. But with those things it's also as you know, it's it's added dilemmas added decision making at. Styles of play. And so all those things we're still trying to figure out who we are coach. Yeah. It's kind of interesting because you know, you've played small ball positions basketball, which is put a lot of pressure on your opponents. You've got really skilled players. I mean, I think Jordan Carolina think of Caleb Cody Martin. I mean, those guys are hard match really aren't matchups when they're your friend court but skilled front court players now you add big people trained, plotter and Brown and all of a sudden now that changes a little bit of the dynamic of your team. How different is that to coach and these routine now have almost two personalities in lots of ways, I think we do coach we do it to personalities and not only adding trae porter and Jordan Brown really with our existing core people because you know, so much was written in the officers that we had four returning starters. And it looked like we had all these recurs what it sacked. We really only have. We returning starters plate in or. Perform last year that being both Cody and Caleb bartered along with Jordan. Caroline, and everyone kept lumping lazy grew it. But maybe still out with the achilles. We don't know if he'll return this year at all. So we really have three guys out of those three guys last year for the majority of the year Kayla. Martin played the story now he has not played anything. But the to Jordan Carolina was our starting center. He now has played the majority of his minutes issue as the three man and Cody Martin played the majority of the minutes until Lindsey Drew's injury late last year as a four man..

"But he's he's been that good. And we all think it'd be lying certainly as an offensive guy. But when he puts a game plan in likes being disciplined enough they stick with it for forty minutes south. You don't see mistakes, you see them sticking with what they drew up to go into the game as pretty damn impressive to me beaten providence by twenty the other night. And that's a home game for providence. A lot is a hard plan. Well coached team to fighting yet coolish. I mean, those they're young, but they're tougher fiscal athletic. Now, am I making a mistake? I watched and Yoda about to say this past week. And I watched the Hawkeyes, and I saw it a hawk is physical. I saw hawk is defend. I saw the. Hawk is have versatility offensively. I saw really good physical backup point guard play by Conor McCaffrey. Oh, I thought it was really really good. I saw a team that's a year. Older you're tougher. A little more mature. I sort of good basketball team on both sides last year. I was my sleeper. Final fourteen they turned into van winkle. Do they have a chance and you see a difference in disability? I do or caffeine was great this kid Luca Garza plays with a toughness that is so contagious. It's incredible. I get energized doing Iowa games. I think Fran. They mentioned on the broadcast really is committed to having this team defense. Thaad cooks a man Tyler man, bad bad, man. I love him. I like to me it seemed like they they had a commitment and guard. I'll tell you if Garcia does that dude's got great hands. I mean, like if it's near him. He's going to get to me the big ten just in general. I mean, you know, you look into Brask over Nebraska's playing. I tell you the guy that doesn't even do a lot. There's a scored Isaiah wrote is a spot. I mean that guy can do a lot of different things in their veteran team. I mean, they'll Palmer's a fifth year guy Copeland's of fifty guy Roby's, you know, an athletic junior. Glenn watch it. I mean Nebraska to me like the big ten to me. We talked about down here. Big ten. No. It's not even close. It's a mean. Like, Nebraska is good Wisconsin to me. I'll tell you. What if Wisconsin to me either I'm way off or Ethan hat might be the trickiest man in college basketball because that dude, and I host on a baseline. He's got all kinds of he's averaging like seven assistant game a guy that is a good team. You got Davidson you got the Meech trice making every shot. I mean, the big ten is ridiculous in my fig, maybe not maybe not the number of national champion teams. But like, they don't there's no rocking chair games in leak. So I think you're absolutely right. Big ten's as deep as I've seen, and the reason it's as deep as I've seen it is because I do think Isla, and I do think Nebraska are legitimate teams. There's just there's no easy outs. That now like there are some leagues that in Pac twelve had a bad year last year. I'm not sure it's getting that much better. Now, I do think wash. Hinton has a chance to be good. I think Oregon has a chance to be good. I think UCLA has a chance to be pretty good because they're talented athletic. I think USC has some some dudes. You know, you know, they have a chance to be good, you know, border and boat. Right. And but they just haven't distinguished themselves. Now it's early in the season. But eventually a league that would the would the schools in location, and and the notoriety in the brands of those leagues, you would think those leagues the Pac twelve would year in year out just a little bit better. Wouldn't you a lot of good coaches on the west coast in high school like great AU program? I do think obviously Arizona has a chance to make a great statement in Maui..

"I mean, I thought that they dictated the tempo of the game with their defense. I thought they really pushed Syracuse outs circuses, lack of a point guard was exposed. But I also think of something else who was exposed am I way off on this? And I know he played without a point guard or shapers said is a good player. He he's he can rebound he can attack. He can run. He's getting we'll stat because he's shooting too many threes. He's not attacking vast. He's not flying around. You can't is who they are. They've got good guard play not much up front. They're gonna play hard for Denny Hurley. I got a concern whether Frank Howard's back or not how Syracuse is playing because they don't assist they don't share the ball. And no one makes a play for anyone else in it seems like right now to me, it seems like he's trying to show people. What he can't do rather? What makes a difference? In fact, Senate interesting you say that because last year, I didn't even know he wasn't did a game vote is kicking gets an Rambo this kid's talented, and how many times well, you can't shoot. If you know if you're gonna make any money. So now, you try to do that. Instead of I dunno help your team win. I think the biggest Frank would make ill. He's gonna make shots. But I'll say the other thing is going to do that. I think is important. I think you get a bigger guy at the top of Joe. So now, maybe you get some deflections you're getting out transition. He's six five he's long as much as a head coach didn't play really at all system. There are some guys that know how to play home people think zone is just easy. No. There are guys that understand how to rotate where to go how to push people down. But. Having a guy that knows how to play right no experience in the top of his own is a big deal. That is often never discussed. Gel care care is going to be a good player. There's no doubt about it. He's not ready to distort again over the top of screams to communicate and take the next pass either. As Harris, the the transfer to you, you know, when you sit out that year, it's not the same. When guys out they make every shot. The coach is really not even coaching a much. He's kind of freedom up by been life is good. Then all of a sudden when you're all of a sudden, you're eligible life changed. I'll tell you to two teams don't take plays off. And you mentioned it early. Michigan defensible when you have a guy like Charles Matthews, and when you have a galaxy of your Simpson, and you have a guy like testy you got three guys that can flat out defect. Tusk terrific boss free defender, physical around the basket Xavier Simpson defensive disrupts trust Matthews even when he's not making shots. That's the game on the defensive end. I am blown away. By look, we we figure John v. Linas a, you know, offensive guru. We think of them as offensive survive. I I don't think they have an offensive identity. Just yet. I think they will. They surely have a defensive identity and they're hard to score against that got enough size their physical, my guy Iggy gifts. I mean that dude is really good and tough. What's that? Chase one of the player for Michigan hurt. He's chased one of each of Michigan basketball because he just kind of Flynn flying around knocking people not backing down to anyone. I am really impressed with Michigan. And I think that they're just scratching the surface. Festively Luke yell and they've never seen coach beeline more in his element talk until yelich because both perform high school teachers, they say, he's got a great mind for defy. Offense explains it, but let's be honest. There are those in big ten world that feel as if Xavier Simpson is the best point guard in the big ten right now. Now, there's been some good when CJ Jackson's been really, whatever..

What is going on Surtees kit will how much will they get better with Frank Harum? We're gonna look at feast week Dan's going to be Atlanta's we're gonna talk about Lantis talk about the NIT, and we're going to talk about now these square it is the season it's up to season forgiving. It's the season. For college basketball eating Turkey sitting on the beach in the Bahamas while I freeze my rear end off. But last week was an interesting week for college basketball because we have to defending national champion. Now firm is also a team that now is beaten to final four teams they beat those Kogyo, and they'd be billing over. But when you look at this Villanova team right now in this moment in time. Let's be honest about ourselves here. Now sit. Sixty points a game almost three hundred fifty three's twenty rebounds and four NBA players. They're not going to be the same team. And let's face it. Eric PASCAL, Phil booth. They wear their fifth and sixth leading scorer last year. They have a new role. What's your take on Villanova? How good can they be? Or do you think this is one of those years where they take two steps back to go. Maybe two steps forward. I think this man. I don't think they thought Amari Spelman and Dante incense over gone. They don't have guys then they one of we were going to talk about this year's team. We'd have been talking about a about that even channel could be the player of the year in the league. But your coach can get some wins. The other guys try to win to the other guys are busting at coach getting paid a lot of money. I just think that you know, they got the pleated Cowan Gillespie needs to start being a star. I don't know. Maybe he needs to be the next Dante defense Enzo. But right now, he's not they're not, and it's no fluke. But Michigan's no joke. Let's be. Is Michigan is no joke. Michigan is damn good. And you know, what they'll be fine eventually, but maybe not this year. Yeah. Me let's face cow Glaspie to me. He's a nice player. But he gets in the lane. It's not like people are really worried about him. Joe like even in a Michigan game. He drove it. And you know what? Michigan. Did they stayed home on all those guys relocate? And and said art, countless we score over us. That's going against David Simpson. And we're also taking away all those step in threes and cream out was over. I mean, the shoot three twenty from the three obviously they lost and BA players. They're turning it over not doing anything. So, you know, Jay, right? He'll stay positive. You'll get as much as you cannot lose team. But it was going to be an interesting year. I how about another northeastern type team you find Danny Hurley's roller to Madison Square Garden and get a little piece of Syracuse suit, in my opinion. Look, I I like what he's doing terms of he's getting guys to compete and play harder. He's got very good guard play. They made some incredible shots down the stretch of that. And he's got those kids bind into him like he's investing in them. And they're playing for him. You can see that..

"Sorry xavier over texas southern i said gonzaga wrong ones yesterday too and i was like is i'm here for thirteen hours i'm going to do this vast zags we had a whole conversation about that i used your advice to help everybody sec basketball by the way doing exactly what a what we said it would and and frank frankly sec basketball better than people expected has looked better than people expected and continues for the second year in a row to be good tennessee yesterday look really good so a little interesting but they did take their first loss earlier today as butler came away with a win over arkansas about like at butler came up with a win over arkansas so that ended the sec's little streak of tiny dominance i wanted to ask you while i realized that their actual tournament teams to discuss there's also a mass exodus occurring at pittsburgh and i wanted to get your take on that because it's not it's not that it would be unexpected for players to decide that they're out when when a head coach is fired and there's a lot of uncertainty but we're seeing just just jumping off the ship just we're out we're done and it's it's it's a surprising number i'm also surprised it's that number for kevin stallings i mean kevin stallings is head coach i think i probably spent too much time around when he was vanderbilt and had had some success but you don't think of kevin stallings as being the great hope that everyone's going to flock to so it would make sense to me if it was coach k if it's calipari it's a huge name in basketball you look at it and say okay i get it i completely understand that guy is so stinking popular that you just can't go without him you're talking about a coach that went eight and twenty five this year that went sixteen and seventeen last year and then during his time at vanderbilt like i mentioned the.
