"Podcast. This is Eric Lewis. And I am here today with Josiah rector, who is an assistant Professor of history at the university of Houston. And we are here to talk about his brand new book. Toxic debt and environmental justice history of Detroit, which was published, I believe last year by the university of North Carolina. Press, it has been reviewed in great depth in the New York review of books, which is quite an achievement for a regular old U.S. historian and review our books very often. So that was pretty amazing. And Josiah has had quite a career already. He won the urban history associations. Michael Katz award for best dissertation in urban history. He's been published in the journal of American history, modern American history, he's been involved in a variety of activist activities as well. And he is really one of the bright young historians in the field of U.S. history. And so we're really happy to have him today and Josiah, thanks for joining us. Thanks for having me, Eric, it's great to be with you. Yeah, could you start by just kind of talking about your book a little bit? Absolutely. Yeah, so this book comes out of dissertation I wrote at Wayne state university. I was a grad student there from 2010 to 2017, and I lived in Detroit for 6 out of those 7 years. And I spent the last 5 years extensively revising it, doing more interviews, doing more archival research, but basically the book is a history of environmental inequality in metro Detroit primarily the city and its inner ring suburbs from the Gilded Age to the COVID-19 pandemic. And I take the story of environmental inequality through the rise and fall of the auto industry into the city's municipal bankruptcy in the 2010s and the sort of recent developments that we can get into if we have time. But basically the punchline of the book as suggested by the title is that

So it's a total guessing game, but I don't think you can only paint it with the what if scenarios with three different Celtics storylines and completely ignore that I think Vegas because the number was so big tonight. The video has racked up over one hundred. Twenty eight thousand likes on tick tock And it went viral on twitter. According to laurenz. And i'm going to quote here. Some tweets suggests that black raiders on tiktok had seemingly agreed not to choreograph a dance to the song which would force non black users to come up with dances on their own and prove how essential black raiders are to the platform in a later. Tiktok eric. the person who promoted this video sad black folks have always had to galvanize and riot and protest to get their voices heard that same dynamic is displayed on tiktok. Said we're being forced to collectively protest a user deja on twitter Said that black creators are telling each other to not make a dance to the new megan the samsung to prove they are the backbone of the app another quote. "Know, really? I was kind of Skip. I was skipping ahead, wondering why I had a friend actually, who was like visiting the Smithsonian. This one kind of blew me away and they've got the preamble. It was just that old white plate with green letters, and I'm sure some people might still remember. And then even after the centennial was over. It was so you could buy the plate for about three years, it said. Centennial celebration on it. Had the mountain there in the middle, which it still has to this day had kind of, or curly Q B writing for the word Washington But when the centennial was over, they got rid of that centennial language, But they kept the mountain. So it's been Washington's official plate for something like 34 years. Actually talked to the department corrections where they make these license plates over in Walla Walla. Loop on the end of it like a steel loop. Yes, that they put around the base of the polyp, squeeze it down, and then they pull it out. And so he's got this thing in my nose, and he's like His hands shake everything you and I can hear this leg. This tearing inside my nose, and he's like digging. He pulls and I think. Oh, my God, Paul. It was his biggest my thumb. And he goes. This is the biggest polyp I've ever seen. He goes. Hang on, He goes out and he shows his staff. You're Paula. Yeah, he goes. Look at this polyp. I just pulled out of his nose like, instantly breathe better. And he showed me because this is just like a big believable like a big booger, you know? Yeah, he had a big booger. How do you know so you can breathe a hell of a lot better right away. It made a huge difference in my You know, breathing After that, That's what you would do You do the nose. I'll be doing nose thing, Kathy said so many times in the air that your nose is fat and too big and she's made funny. Your nose all the time. Yeah, constantly. I don't know. I just really nice of her to do that to point out my flaws right when she says it with love what? What other what other Surgeries are available. I'm uh I'm just well for women. That boob job.
