National Amelia Earhart Day with Wade Roush

"Hey Paul it's weighed rouch. So July twenty fourth is National Amelia Earhart Day and I guess what I'm curious about is how Amelia herself would feel about the way she's remember today I mean it seems like she's famous mostly for disappearing into thin air and only secondarily for being the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic which all seems Kinda backward to me. On the other hand, she's seen increasingly as a feminist icon which seems like might please her. So I'm just curious how historians and biographers think earhart would have regarded her own fame. Thanks. Wade given that I've never been confused for an historian. I'm one of those people that thinks about Erhard the way you've described above. So it's nice to be given a little nudge of history and hopefully I can return the favor. For my first recommendation, I, found a podcast called. Erhard which hopes to shed some more light on Earhart by interviewing guests. In this episode, they interview Abigail Harrison who is commonly known as astronaut. Abby. As part of the interview, Abby Talks about how a millionaire heart is an inspiration. They also talk about the marsh. And stem as well as our work as an aspiring actress not. Today's guest is weighed Roche host of the soonest podcast which helps us understand were technology come from and how we decide to start or stop using it. It's that understanding that allows us to be more intentional about the kind of future were building together. Soon Ish covers a lot of ground from bridges to virtual reality to the voting process. One episode that struck me though was way talking about quitting facebook, which is something I grapple with constantly On the episodes page description we'd outlines multiple years were facebook failed us and he finally had enough. Here in twenty twenty facebook continues to fail enlarge ways and I wish some of the tech support groups that I am a member of would find another service. So I could get off facebook myself. For last recommendation wait went above and beyond he's given three podcast recommendations and a youtube channel that are about the weird byways and. In no particular order they are. The. Constant. The right stuff the wrong way. Ninety nine percents, invisible gander international airport. Should this exist boom the return of supersonic flight. And Amy Sheera. Titles Youtube Channel VINCA space. A link to all of them will be in the show notes. For today's extra hot sauce. I just WanNa add that Wade is one of the creators of the Boston based podcast collective called hub-and-spoke. If you've been listening to this podcast since the beginning you'll know that Charles Gustin was my second guest ever who was the host of ICONOGRAPHY, which is part of hub and spoke.

"And as we got the day off, the landscape designers are Erhard is here with us. And there before we went to the break we were talking about. Visual fun in the wintertime. I guess that's something to break up the monotony. You talked about a couple of things, and I know you've got some more than that are that work. So I showed you during the break a picture of the river could see the Barak on as soon as I saw that. I realized what it was because I have seen it before. Yeah. And then there's another plant, and it's called the common. Name would be Harry Lauder walking stick that sound. That sound sounds very because I know wary water was you do. Yes, who was water was a British music hall performer. He were killed any carry this this old walkie sick. And he would sing in the vernacular. The very very Scottish Burr. Yeah. Reading Robert burns. Okay. And anyway, yes. And he was as late as World War Two. I know he was still performing. And I I remember we had recordings of his at home. Ooh. Oh, boy growing up. So when he had the did you ever see him with a walking stick to? Okay. So was the walking six straight? No. It was it was crooked. Okay. So there you go. That's why they call it. The I learned something new. Really cool from somebody old. Yes. And now, what makes that interesting? Yes. So the scientific name of this plant is cordless contorted. Yeah. And yeah, so yeah, exactly. So describes its branches in its branches are contorted. This plant is a love hate plant people either see it and go all my gosh. That's the one of the most coolest plants I've ever seen or were. They look at it. And they say oh that things ugly. It looks sick. What could you do wrong with the leaves on it? Look somewhat shriveled. And so that's why people they'll look at it. And thing looks like there's something wrong. Yeah. But in the winter to sit on my hurry to. But in the wintertime, take the leaves off of it because it's deciduous, and you have all these curled curls down. And it also gets a little seed had this call the cat, Ken and the they hanging down and the the whole planet. Looks just really cool in the wintertime with the contorted towns, and then the little catkins, and again when the snow lays on it, just a very interesting plant, okay. Harry Lauder L A U D E R walking stick with a common name. Right. And then there's actually variation of that that's called red dragon, which is really cool again. It's the contorted Filbert. But it has the leaves have a bit of a reddish purple tint to him. And I like to use that one too. It's just really neat as a specimen standalone kind of plant. You wouldn't put three of them in you'd put one of them in and let it be a focal point in your landscape. That's a really cool plant one of the other ones that people don't think about very much as winter interests would be your ru goals aromas. So the wild like a wild shrub rose. Okay. And the the. Oh my goodness. The rose hips there we go. The fruit. Out of it. You can and you can actually eat them. They're very vitamin c. Yeah. I knew very healthy. I didn't realize you could just a little bit. Like a crab apple. I guess I remember tasting a crab apple. Yeah. Another Witter interested crab. Apple would be nice also. Yeah. Then some of the crab apples have what's called persistent fruit. So that all that means is the fruit hangs on through the winter. Well, they tend to be lower in sugar. So the birds aren't quite as crazy about them. So they'll eat them, but they won't eat them right away. They'll they'll hang through the wintertime. Until we really hungry. Exactly. And oftentimes people think of the foreign crab apples is just the red fruit like red or maybe bright orange, but there's also one called harvest gold and has a really nice yellow on it. With winter taxes, you think about red against the snow would be beautiful. It's different something out of the ordinary. So a few of the ones the crab apples that the university of Wisconsin extension highly recommends for being good for winter interest, and to says all around disease resistant and stuff are the that harvest gold that I mentioned, and then there's another one called jewel coal the old standby was red jewel. So this is kind of an improved variety called jewel coal. Okay. That one is red fruit persistent, and then another one if the people like the weeping form, so the crab has more of a weeping four-man. Coral cascade. That's another one that has though cool weeping form, and the persistent food before you mean sort of like, a weeping, willow. Yeah. Yeah. Okay. So it has kind of that weeping. Yeah. The branches. The roots that are gonna find your pipes and come in here. This is true. And it won't get Seagal darn large either everything willow will. So those are some of the crab apples that work. Great. We talked about the, evergreen Perennials. But everybody also knows about the ornamental grasses. So there's a million different varieties of those right out there and some people like to put them in the fall and clean everything up. But they can be kind of cool. If you leave him for the winter, absolutely. I kind of a shame that people chapel down. Whereas if you leave them up to the rear kind of interesting, and again, we're looking for somebody to break, the monotony of just the the barons no ground anyway, looking at the old clock on the wall. It's time to take a break..

"A rude wake-up call in the south this morning. This is the five thirty report. I'm Matt Reese along with Brian combs breaking now an earthquake in Tennessee this morning about four fifteen. It was centered six files north northeast of Decatur which is between Knoxville and Chattanooga about one hundred and twenty miles south east of Nashville was felt in the Atlanta area was felt from Gwinnett county and the north Georgia mountains all the way across the northern Atlanta metro area to where which is in western Cobb County, doctor in the northwest part of town, and it was going to wake people up. It woke us up. It's felt like somebody was shaking. The bet we looked at each other and said, it's not me. And I said it's not me we looked at the dog. And we know it's not her only compounds. "The Erhard is going to be joining us shortly. And we also going to be. We could lose the the liner up there. We we also going to be taking some calls there and also discussing what's going on with the midterms prison. I'd say it's gonna have eleven appearances in the next six days. I've never seen anything like it from a president who's not asking you to vote for himself. He's asking you to vote for other people to me the biggest mystery. So for of this election is what's happening in the Senate seat the race for the Senate seat in Arizona, Jeff flake seat, more than sallies fighter pilot, Republican conservative trying to replace a conservative. She's going against Kristen cinema who every day nor revelations come out that shows her questionable character questionable life story. And now, you have a staffer could on camera tug it about how she's pretending to be moderate and fair that she's actually a real liberal, and guess what? Cinemas now up by three or four points. I just don't understand it the first female fighter pilot in the hashtag metoo era. And you have our Inara. Zona representing a very military oriented very patriotic state, which I understand is leading to purple the other thing that I find a mystery the people of Florida, I guess it's just such a close state, Democrats or Republicans having trouble picking between Senator Bill Nelson. Who is a great guy. Astronaut -ccomplish military got it. He hasn't done anything in twenty years. And you have Rick Scott. This successful businessman wasn't taking a dime from the state. He gave the state something like twenty million jobs. He brought him into surplus. They now have a rainy day fund. And you can't decide in Florida who the best candidate is who's going to work harder for you for your interest in understand what Florida wants I mean, governor Scott as at the point where as much as he's friends with Donald Trump, he separated from Donald Trump on many issues, including when he came to you the Spanish, but one thing about governor, Scott his ratings are high with Hispanics because he's earned it. He wanted with the Puerto Rico had the flood excuse me, the hurricane and were flooded out of their home. They were relocated to Florida. They did not leave a lot in the Orlando area he proved himself to them in their community in the Cuban community as well. So I just I'm flabbergasted about those two races that they're even close. We'll see what happens on election day. We're also going to be watching what's happening in Missouri..

Let's go to Jason Erhard with the Steelers just getting into the end zone moments ago. The rain is picked up Jason. Yeah. Things starting to pick up here in Cincinnati. The Steelers getting a one yard touchdown run from jail. Connor was pretty impressive drive. They went seventy five yards in over five and a half minutes. Connor had a twenty six yard run on that. Dr Ben Rothlisberger has been sharp thus far seven of twelve for seventy three yards. Bengals have the ball back though. They are in Steelers here. Tori facing a third down and five at the Steelers forty three with about eleven minutes to go here in the first half all mounted up at seven here in Paul brownstein. Right. So it's been a good one so far there and it was David Moore catch in the nineteen yard touchdown pass. From Russell Wilson. His second of the day. Brought Russell Wilson so far five of seven seventy four yards and the two touchdowns quickly. Let's go back to Mike man Q so at MetLife stadium it's been a turnover fest so far between the jets and the colts, Mike and the colts now lead thirteen to ten rich. Viteri hits the field goals on your new fumble called started into a field goal. Daily thirteen to ten eleven minutes remaining second quarter, Mike. So right now the Steelers just time things up with the Bengals a couple of moments ago at seven few minutes into the second quarter. Matt Ryan a fast start the falcons on top of the buccaneers fourteen six chargers and their pass rush. Putting the pressure on Baker Mayfield as the LA leaves the Browns. Seven charge of four sacks. Vikings in front of cardinals ten three and made the big stop on fourth and goal from the one yard line Redskins with a big lead over the Panthers who have turned the ball over a couple of times fourteen and nothing Seahawks in front of the raiders fourteen. "Is fox and friends with steve doocy as well as ainsley erhard and brian kilmeade rudy giuliani trump's top attorneys saying that the molar probe cannot indict or issue subpoena against trump for the very same reasons why they can indict him they also cannot issue a subpoena people liked immediately think of what about clinton he had to in oakland in half to voluntarily did but he didn't have to never give up his presidential prerogatives who just because he went forward just meeting set a precedent for succeeding presidents everybody gets to do with their own way when it comes to the separation of powers and he went on to say that the molar team can issue a report to congress and if it's fair fight if it's unfair then the trump team will in his words quote unquote rip it apart we have assisting in the opining and analyzing show what am i regulars dan gainer vice president of business and culture for the media research centres all say fox news contributing columnist dan have you back buddy how are you today during so much news going on you can there's more investigation it really looks like he's going to be more disastrous than your what yeah but i think more disastrous for the investigative team under muller not necessarily for trump i mean there's always a lot of ashes and smoke when the mainstream media reports on trumpet ultimately is john solomon of the hill newspaper was recently heard saying on my show courtesy of clips out of fox and others that the genesis of this is just not exposing much in the way of nefarious nece and that he also pointed out how in this piece in.

"That's part of your process how do you identify this process and what happens next for you in that process how do you what how do you know that breeding for you works for someone else that might be go for a walk for someone else that might be something else how do how do you identify that well to me one of the things i learned about this might i can't remember where i got this from might have been some werner erhard influence but the idea is called complete emotion cycles emotions come in waves and they fled our bodies with chemicals and then they kind of go away and it takes several minutes for an emotion cycle kind of a standard emotion cycle to happen for some of us get really triggered for me all feel him for hours sometimes for days i kind of can't get rid of a feeling if like we're in a really big fight or something really hard happens but what a lot of us do and i definitely did this when i was younger is we don't feel them we don't allow them into our consciousness we think it's going to push that down i'm gonna distract myself i'm going to do the next thing but when we do that they get kind of pentup and then we kind of can't we can't have emotional experiences that are flowing with other people in with ourselves and so the key practices it's not walking a breathing it's to feel the emotions that you're feeling so when the emotion comes up and you feel triggered to stop in to feel where the emotion is feel for a lot of people anger might be you know the back in the neck and the head or in the chest or in the arms or sadness might be in the chest with the stomach or anxiety might be you know high in the chest you feel it and present presently stay with it as it moves through your system and allow yourself to have complete emotion cycle don't interrupt them and even though it's hard to do when it's over a few minutes later and you've just felt it and stayed with it when it goes then it really goes and it.
