And of course, the weekend long read suggestions. Here's what you missed today in the world of tech. The entertainment software association has canceled E three 2023 after Microsoft Nintendo Sony and ubisoft all announced that they would not attend the event originally scheduled for June 13th to June 16th, quoting IGN. Two sources have confirmed to IGN that the organization announced the cancellation via an email sent out to its members today. The email said that while E three quote remains a beloved event and brand that the 2023 version simply did not Garner the sustained interest necessary to execute it in a way that would showcase the size strength and impact of our industry end quote. The ESA concludes the email by reiterating its commitment to advocacy work. It does not mention undertaking the show again in future years. Following IGN's report, the ESA issued the following public statement from Kyle marsden kish, global VP of gaming. This was a difficult decision because of all of the effort we and our partners put toward making this event happen. But we had to do what's right for the industry and what's right for E three. We appreciate and understand that interested companies wouldn't have playable demos ready and that resourcing challenges made being at E three this summer. And obstacle they couldn't overcome. For those who did commit to E three 2023, we're sorry we can't put on the showcase you deserve. And that you've come to expect from read pops event experiences. "Joined by the lovely misses Rihanna manual Pena. What's good, Andrea? What's good for? And Brittany Bronco is here too. I like the way you send meaty. Earlier. I mean, that was meaty. What is it like 13 minutes long time? Yeah, game plan. Another shit, yeah. It was very meaty. It was like a mini direct just for Zelda. But not. But not, but close. We're gonna talk about that in just a minute, 'cause y'all know Britney has thoughts. Oh, never. To say about it. But we're excited about this episode's a little bit of a special episode in the sense that we have a fantastic interview with the one and only Mary Kenny, a senior writer at insomnia games, talking about her work in video games narrative and her new book, which we'll talk about later on in the show. So please stick around for that. And of course, we're going to be recapping what we saw at pax east, which just happened over the weekend. And then on top of that, we were like, ah, it's gotta be a slow newsweek, right? Does GDC just happen? Pax just happened, but no. The world of video games is not to sit on their laurels. So we will get to the news in just a second, but I want to say thank you to everybody who took the time to come and see our panel at pax. It was so good to see people in person. And also everybody who came to the meetup. Did y'all have fun in Boston? Yeah, it was a lot of fun and not as cold as I thought it would be because the last pax east we went to was under snow and this was much more enjoyable otherwise so I had a great time. Yeah, I kind of forgot how invigorating it is to see people in person, especially at a big convention like pax east, which eventually sold out all their passes. Which I have to admit, I was rather surprised. Pleasantly surprised, happy for them. Gone with your bad self, but it was really nice. It kind of like come home and you're in that post con funk if you're like, oh, I'm so used to being around all this energy and then you're at home and it's silent except for your baby crying. Oh, that's sweet, sweet sound that you missed. Well, take this dot org has a lovely article about the post con crash, if anybody wants to go check that out. Oh, that's some very good pro tips to drop. I did not realize that they had some tips about how to deal with that. So I mean, I'm also just try to sleep and then fail as per usual. Mom, live, am I right, everybody? So before we jump into the regular show, I want to let everybody know that what's good games is going to be taking a little break. But fear not friends, we will not be not putting up content. That's a lot of knots that are just too many negatives. We will still have your regularly scheduled episode every Friday while we're on a little mini break. We actually have some really fun pieces of content planned. We have a special preview for a game coming out next week. And then the week after that, we've got a fantastic interview with the one and only Sean Benson from Sony interactive entertainment. And then we're talking about our top 5 of the last 5. That's right, our top 5 video games of the last 5 years is a really fun episode. So hopefully you guys join us for all of those. And in the meanwhile, if we are a little quiet on our social accounts now, you know why, just taking a tiny little break to recharge before the wackiness that's gonna happen in May and June. Thank you to this month's Patreon producers, chewie's got some Alex gopo fes to Tia Justin Fauci and punk to fight. And welcome to our Patreon community, Mikey. Kobe paddock, Hannah Stewart, the Sakura guy, is that Alex is that you, I assume it's you? And Nate. And Brittany looks like we have a bunch of new reviewers, and I've read some really kind reviews. Oh, I know. They just really, like I said, give you a big old fat ego boost, and they were so, so lovely. So we have boy racer three 21. Noah gaggan, cloudy Atlas 22, Jay pays zero 5 zero 6 entire tray of this bowl. Reals for reals and hypnagogia 92 who actually had some great feedback. And their feedback was that we should mention the title of the game that we're talking about in our hands on section more often because sometimes the title might get missed and then we move on to the next game without saying what the game was and then they're like oh crap over are they playing and they don't know. So we will take that feedback to heart and maybe actually practice that and this week's hand on section because we have a lot of what we talk about from PACS. Yes, played all of the things. And this week's episode is brought to you by Shopify, better help and Dave, but we'll tell you more about that later. Let's talk about the E three drama. The latest drama I should probably say because wow, it feels like every other week there's a news story or rumor happening about E three, the electronic entertainment expo put on every June by the ESA, the entertainment software association. And this one is kind of a downer. And it's looking not so great for what's happening with E three. So there's been some rumors swirling that publishers aren't going to be showing up to E three. We've heard from the big platforms, Xbox, Nintendo, and PlayStation all say, we're not going to be at E three, though Xbox did confirm their Xbox sympathize to showcase, is going to be happening on Sunday, June 11th. Dates, everybody. So we know that Xbox is going to have a presence around between summer game fest and E three doing their own thing. And we formally heard that ubisoft was going to be attending E three per their earnings call where eve told us the CEO of course of ubisoft that they would be part of it. Turns out maybe he spoke a little too soon because they changed their mind everybody. According to an article over at IGM, not only is ubisoft not joining E three and sidor doing a ubisoft forward live event the Monday after June 12th, there's also concerns that Sega and even more publishers are going to be backing out because they've learned that Sega in Tencent have announced that they will happen to announce IGN has learned I should say that they're going to be skipping E three as well. And by the time this podcast airs in between when we record the show and publisher show, who knows what other announcements for E three are going to happen. Ladies, what do you think about these rumors? Are you concerned? Or are you like, nah, but there's still plenty of games in the sea. It's very sad. So Sega did confirm with IGN that they are skipping. I think Tencent did say something else and I don't remember what it. I can't keep track. They have a whole bunch of statements. Anyway, it's such a bummer. And I don't think anyone wants to see E three go away. I think we all love E three not only just for the excitement and the hype and it's so cool that the entire industry gets together for like this well now it feels like it's stretching out much longer than one week and just the people getting together the community now that the public is invited and the exciting deals that go on behind closed doors and then cool announcements that happen and you know I love our 8 ball episode we do every year where we get to predict everything and the thought of that potentially going away or being changed because of the way the industry is heading when it comes to these physical events. It just makes me really sad and I'm bummed about it. I want to see E three continue to thrive and you know there's a lot of reasons the IGN articles are really great one and there are a lot of reasons in there why they list that this could be happening. Obviously there's the COVID-19 pandemic, which we're all very familiar with, which really screwed up a lot of people's productions and all that. And then there's the budget. So when the pandemic was happy and a lot of event teams got cut and budgets haven't been replenished to their pre 2020 capacities quite yet. So even if people wanted to go, it sounds like the budget is not only not there, but what the rumblings of E three, it sounds like they'd rather put their eggs in a different basket, like maybe packs, like something that you know for sure is going to stick around. So anyway, I'm very sad about this, and I don't want to see E three go away, but I think we'd all be fully on ourselves if we pretended like there isn't going to be a major shift happening in one way or another in the future. And I don't think it's going to go back to the way it was. I always go back to the case that I make for, as we mentioned, the behind closed doors meetings, the things that help the business move forward, talking to shareholders or other publishers, or it's the industry conference part of E three that is so, so vital in that can not happen virtually.

"By the entertainment software association and additionally about half of all players globally across the world are women, so this is a huge market for women. However, female leaders and executives in the gaming industry are almost nothing and the women who are building games aren't seeing that amount of investment in their companies. And as we've talked about before, when we have more women in leadership, those companies are more likely to thrive, more likely to have more revenue. So gaming industry, what's up? We have two amazing Forbes recognized women here today to chat about women and leadership in gaming industry, especially when it comes to blockchain gaming. We'll start with Miriam. She is an entrepreneur operating at the intersection of no code gaming purposeful content creation and blockchain. She was named to the Forbes next 1000 list, which honors startups and businesses with less than 10 million in sales, but limitless potential to inspire. She is the founder and CEO of grid, which stands for gaming revolution for international development, where they're reimagining the way video games are created and used. She's right now building breshna IO, a platform that empowers users to create share and monetize their own purposeful web three video games with no code at lightning speed, think TikTok for video games. Is currently the chief technology officer at crikey, a mobile AR gaming app that she actually cofounded with her sister. Hey, more women. She received her BA MA and PhD at the Stanford virtual human interaction lab and previously worked at Google and meta while she was at meta she worked on the Oculus VR and she was awarded Forbes 30 under 30 in the 2020 class in the gaming category. Talk about these incredible women paving the way for gaming industry, welcome Miriam and Kate. Thank you so much, cam. So excited to be here. So excited to be sharing the stage with karaki. And thank you so much for that awesome warm intro. Super excited. Likewise, thank you so much for this opportunity and super excited to be here with Miriam today. So happy to have you both. I'm so inspired by both of you. Kaki has been helping so much with UX research and while she was talking, I was like, you have to be on the show and Miriam joined our Twitter space and she was sharing all about her gaming platform and me and Michelle were like, you have to be on the show. So just we're so excited to have both of you here. Miriam, let's start with you. What gets you up in the morning and motivates you? Oh, comes that's a fun one, right? So it's like, I think what gets me up is, as you said, we're building brush Nam and the big idea behind breshna is that anyone can tell their stories to video games. I mean, I grew up playing games like SimCity where I was learning about urban planning without even knowing I was learning about urban planning. They were around 1 billion video game players around the world today, and only 200,000 people making games. And that's the reason that we don't see a diversity of story, characters, music, languages, in games, right? Because all the games have the New York City skyline and the yellow cab at the same kind of characters. Because there's only a few people building games. And for me, I think true democratization of storytelling can happen to video games if we remove the skills barrier. So what gets me up at night is the vision of a world where anyone can tell their story to video games, just like anyone can make a TikTok video. And to make it that simple for people to make their own hyper casual video games and to and to just be able to communicate to their own video games. So that's what I'm building and that's what gets me up and going. Wow, you touched on so much right there, especially being culture and representation into the gaming industry and touching on whether it's so important to have more stories, we'll talk a little bit about that after ketaki. What gets you up in the morning? Yeah, first of all, that was an amazing answer and totally agree with pretty much everything that was said. One of the reasons that we decided to start our own business was that we felt that there wasn't a whole lot of representation in interactive media and we wanted to try to start to change the tide on that. We also build developer tools that combine artificial intelligence to generate 3D assets and then plug those directly into game templates that are compatible with any 3D engine. It's a similar idea where we know that there's a high barrier to entry. You need to know how to make high fidelity assets. You need to understand how to program. We're trying to lower that barrier so that anybody who has an idea can come in and be a creator right away. I think in particular this idea of generative art so using artificial intelligence models to build 3D assets to rig and animate human characters will be offering this in our beta starting in Q one. And we think that's going to bring a lot of people to the table who maybe had an idea before, but weren't able to make their own art. And so it's really powerful to see what we can do with technology and more importantly, anyone can be a creator. That's really the vision that we're pushing for. I'm especially interested in understanding a little bit more about the technical aspects of creating especially, but I'm going to pivot here and I'm just going to ask a question to both of you whoever wants to answer, why gaming in the web three space? Yeah, that's a great question. I think that gaming is really where people spend a lot of their time. And I think there's a few reasons for that. One is that it's very engaging. So you have a lot of agency with gaming and really any type of interactive media. Two is that games today can take on many different forms. So as Miriam mentioned, there's hyper casual games. There's console games. There's a lot of different ways to engage people, but when you add the blockchain layer to it, I think this idea of digital asset ownership. So really having a part in what you're building is so important. Today, when you play
