How to Improve Your English Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing Skills

"Hello Hello and welcome to the English. Journey podcast episode, one I, am your host Jazzmen and for this week's episode I thought we would take it back to the basics. Honestly if you're not doing these four steps then I don't know why you're here I'm totally kidding, but in all seriousness. If you're not doing these four basic easy steps, then you're not really taking your English learning seriously so in this week's episode we're going to really cover the most basic and easy tips to apply to your life in order to learn English. English fluently now, most of you probably are already doing some of these steps as they are pretty like I mentioned basic, and they are kind of like one of the first things teachers recommend to students to start doing to improve your language at home, and typically for free, so these are going to be easy to do and also for the most part. Part free, which is awesome so now that we're all at home during covid nineteen, it is important to have steps that are accessible to everyone, so I would say that you can really follow these steps no matter where you live in the world now one thing to mention if I am ever speaking a little too quickly. Don't forget that there is an option. Option, on your smartphone, where you can press the speed on the left coast, believe and you can slow down the audio or it up. So I'm trying to just speak at a normal fluent English intonation, but if it ever is too fast or too slow, feel free to adjust it to your level moving on so interestingly enough most of today's actual English. Sorry. There's construction going on upstairs above my unit, and it's absolutely annoying, so if you hear some thumping or hammering, I apologize in advance so. Early enough most of Sei's English. Speakers in the world have actually learned it as their second language, so take that in for a second people are not learning English as the first native language, most of today's English. Speakers have spoken it as their second or third or fourth language, so that means that for the most part, a huge majority of english-speakers are actually learning it and probably do have a slight accent now. Native speakers are so used to this because as mentioned, most people have learned it as a second or third language, so the accent or any problems grammatically are not a big issue this does. Does Not Bother native English speakers at all now the sooner you realize that the only person that a standing in your way to being a fully confident English speaker is yourself, and the sooner you realize that the quicker you can actually follow a plan and start to master the language now it is possible to learn English fast. no-one said easy, but you can do these steps, and it will accelerate your learning. There are so many successful stories out there. Even stories that I've heard personally from friends that I know who live in different countries that are not English. Speaking who have improved their English language. Language, following these steps now for the purpose of this podcast I am going to break down my steps into four categories. There's going to be listening speaking reading and writing and that way we can really hone in on. What do we need to do for each of the skills? Let's start with listening because you know you are here already right now on this podcast. If you're not listening to English podcast yet, I highly encourage you to start now. I'm not here just to say. Mine is the only podcast you should be listening to. Although I, do appreciate your support, but podcasts in general are really. Really great way for you to really hone in on your language skills, podcasts are awesome, because you actually are listening to someone having a conversation, which is basically the next best thing to having the actual conversation for example, if you live in a country where English is not a common language spoken listening to podcasts, kind of gives you that real life interaction that you probably wish you could have and honestly podcasts or an easy way to learn English because there truly is a podcast for everyone. Let's say you're an artsy person. A new love painting I am sure there are tons of podcasts out there. Painters or if you are a artist and you like making music, there are tons of podcasts out there for you. And English is actually the most dominant language on most podcast streaming platforms, so you are likely to find many English speaking podcasts that will suit your needs if you needed another reason to like podcasts. If you're someone who has to spend a lot of time driving to work, or you know going from place to place for me personally, I hate just driving without anything to. To Do I. Feel like it's a waste of time so when I'm driving to work, or if I'm stuck in traffic, I love putting on a podcast, because at least that way. I'm learning something new the next thing you can do to improve your English listening skills as you can listen to English songs now. I am sure most of you are already doing this, but it's worth mentioning because studies have actually shown that even among adults learning a language through music helps with your memory. As kids I remember in school I would learn tons of things through songs whether it be the alphabet or learning about numbers or addition anything like that. There was always a song available for us. Kids now think about how that made kids learn the concept way easier because it kind of put it into your memory, you start to memorize the song and then it. It makes sense so the same thing applies here even for adults music. Really help with your memory, so if you're starting to listen to more English music, really try to understand what they're seeing. Try to understand the song lyrics and really take it in because a lot of this information will be stored in your memory even if you don't realize it yet. Another great tip is if you're noticing that. A specific type of music is way too hard to learn. Try Switching to another type for example, a lot of hip hop music can speak super super fast now, of course I'm not saying. Don't listen to it if it's way too hard. Still give it a try, but if you're finding that, you're not really pick up on the vocabulary, and you're not really able to understand what's going on. Try switching to something slower or maybe something a little bit more understandable. You might have better luck with that. Now my last hip to improve your listening skills in English is to watch English, TV, shows and movies now I know what you're thinking, okay? How is watching something going to improve my listening skills now listen. Most people are probably already watching some kind of English movies or TV shows, as we already know that a huge percentage of the world's media is being recorded in the English language something. That I've learned having a lot of international friends is that they have told me that when they watch English movies and TV shows that has helped them understand the English language so much more. Think about it shows and movies really do mimic real life. So when you're watching these things you're actually getting a little insight into what the world of an anglophone English speaker is like. These shows and movies really give you an insight into English. Slang and vocabulary and things people actually say not what you learn about in textbook. Now if you are serious about learning English. I definitely recommend starting to watch English TV, shows or movies from now on the best part about this is that you're actually entertaining yourself and you know it's fun, so you don't even really realize that you're actually doing active learning, but you really are okay now to is speaking my biggest tip to improve her English is to speak speak. English, with anyone. This is the most important thing you can do. When it comes to learning a new language, you need to really make sure you're giving yourself new opportunities to speak with friends. Family even strangers okay now. This is so important. Get Out of your comfort zone and start speaking English now. The biggest hurdle I've heard from. Who I know that is trying to learn. A new language is that they don't feel comfortable speaking in front of a native speaker for myself personally I speak French a pretty high level and I. Still Find Myself Feeling Very Self, conscious and awkward when I need to speak with a French native speaker. Even though I know it's good for me and I know that by speaking. Speaking more with them, I am going to improve my French, sometimes it is hard especially if you're currently living in country or city, where there are not even that many native speakers see the funny thing is Canada the second national language in Canada is French yet I. Know only a handful of people who speak French fluently. So you know I understand it's hard to find people. People in your country or your city that speak the language that you're trying to learn, but guys wake up. It's twenty twenty. Okay, you know how easy it is now to speak with someone online through video chats and different APPS. It seriously so accessible. There are ton of different learning APPs that you can actually use. There are a ton of English language. APPS that you can. Can actually download for free and speak with people from all over the world who are trying to learn English as well if you would like to know a little bit more about those. APPs feel free to check out our blog on glitch. Dot Me, slash blog, and I have a whole article all about the top free English learning APPS. You can download to improve your. English. Step this one is only if you really have the means and the finances for it, but if you do hiring an English Tudor is a really great idea. The, reason why it's so useful is because when you're just speaking English with anyone especially, if it's another person trying to improve their English as well sometimes, both going to be making mistakes, and you won't be able to correct each other, so yes, you're getting the practice, but you're not really improving in grammar or learning new vocabulary by hiring English Tudor. You have the chance to actually have a conversation. Learn from them, and they will also correct you. You and teach you proper ways to speak if a tutor seems a little bit too intimidating for you, because it's you know one on one, and maybe you're not feeling comfortable to talk one on one with a native speaker, you can also start by taking English language courses. There's a lot of different levels available from beginner to advance, so may be considered checking out some online English courses. Okay, another tip for English speaking is to start small start. Start by speaking to yourself out loud. It's going to feel a little bit weird at first, but I promise you. This works so when you wake up, go in front of your mirror. Brush your teeth. Look at yourself in the mirror and tell yourself one thing in English whether that be one positive goal. You have for yourself that day, or it could simply be a to do list of all the things you want to do that day just. Just, try talking to yourself in English in front of Yourself. That's going to start giving you confidence to speak out loud, and also you're recognizing a different part of yourself, your understanding how your voice sounds in a different language, you can do so much learning by reading and writing and watching things, but if you're not actually talking out loud having you're out loud, you're not really practicing your accent and practicing to move your mouth in the proper ways. Not to mention that the more you do this and get into the habit of speaking out loud. An English the more comfortable you're going to be with the language. Your brain is slowly going to start to think more and more. And make the English language learning process feel much more natural. Alright tip number three or guess step number three would be reading now. A lot of new English language learners kind of fear, the step and it kind of get some a little bit uncomfortable because they ask well. How can I start reading an English when I barely know English now? Listen I'm reading I'm not saying reading entire huge thick book right? Think about reading as being possible in any area whether that's reading a caption on Instagram, post or Or reading subtitles on a movie, reading can happen in so many ways. It's not the only traditional method of reading a book. You can read articles you can read magazines, newspapers books, social media blogs even subtitles as I mentioned. Reading is so important when learning a new language, because it actually allows you to build new English vocabulary. Expose yourself to English. Even start to learn the spelling and grammar, and it will actually help you think in English to. Think of it like this. If you're only speaking with people, especially speaking with the same type of people, you're only going to be exposed to a certain level of vocabulary for example. Let's say your friend and you are both trying to learn English. A new guys schedule a weekly conversation call, which is a great idea. You know to practice speaking out loud in front of someone that was step two, but you're only going to be exposed to each other's vocabulary levels, so if you're a both beginners, you're not really going to be exposed to new harder words so reading even if that's in a small way, you're going to start to learn new. New Vocabulary kind of expand your own. One of my favorite things to do is every time I read about a new slang, word or expression especially in French. Since that's my language that I'm trying to learn. I have a little note up on my phone, and I write down one of the new words, and and a quick little definition beside it that way every couple weeks I'll just go through the list and go through all the new words I've learned. It allows me to refresh my memory and keep that vocabulary in my mind. Another great way is if you follow an instagram account, you can actually press the same function and save. Save all the new words or new tips that you've been learning. Be sure to check out our instagram little plug over here. It's glitch. Social I post daily content, and you can save each word, so that will really help you. If there's something new you learned and you don't want to forget about it. You just press the save button, and then you have in your folder now. I'm going to be honest. Don't go too easy on yourself. Normally people would say the opposite. They would say oh, be patient, be kind to yourself. Don't get too stressed out. Start slow and yes I. DO agree that those are important of course want to not. Not Overwhelm Yourself. You don't want to feel stressed out when you're learning a new language, but if you're not challenging yourself and pushing yourself and pushing your limits your sadly not to see much improvement, you really do need to push yourself and do something that's hard in order to see results. Make sure when you're reading anything in the English language. You're checking the level of difficulty. This is a fun little trick to see. If a reading level is too hard for you, hold out your hand and every time there's a word that's too hard for you. Put One finger down by the end of the page or the end of the paragraph. Holding down all your five fingers dot means the articles too hard for you. If you only had to hold down one or two or three fingers than you're okay, it's all right to have difficult words. You're learning from as long as you are learning from them and taking notes, and you know noticing when something's hard and set up just skipping the hard word and pretending it doesn't exist all right last, but not least we've got our forth tip our forth. Learn English is writing skills now. I will start off by saying that writing is definitely the least important out of all of these tips. Which is why I've saved for last. So if you're still listening showed up to you, but please note that writing. It's not too important now before all the writers coming attack me, listen to what I'm saying of course, writing is important but it. It depends what your goals are for learning the English language for example, if you are applying for an office job where you need to be, you know filling out forms and answering calls, and having a more professional experience with the English language. Of course you're going to on no work on your writing on the other hand. If you are someone who is just trying to improve. Improve their English language so that you can go travel to an English speaking country and have a good time and talk with locals. Then you're probably not going to really need to improve your writing skills, so writing is a step that I suggest if it aligns with your learning goals, so you kind of I need to decide. What are your goals when it comes to learning? Learning English and is writing important, because if writing is not important for your goals, of course, I would say skip it for now and focus on the first three, because you know, you want to put all your time and energy into the things that are going to show the best results now my best piece of advice if you do on continue with English, writing is purchase. Purchase a journal. It does not have to be a fancy journal can literally be one of those simple notebooks from the dollar store, but why I say you need is to write down your thoughts in English and the information that you're learning along the way. Yes, of course you can use a digital notes. APP like the one on your phone or computer, but something about writing in. In a journal I find it really allows you to reflect and think about what you're writing instead of just writing quickly like as if you were writing a text. Right like when you send a text to a friend. Sometimes, you don't really think too much about it seriously. How many times have you sent a text and you just kind of typed really quickly and press send. Send without even looking at what you were writing. When it comes to a journal, you kind of take your time a little bit more. You don't WanNa. Make too many mistakes you don't WanNa have to cross things out, so just thought process of reflecting and taking your time to write really helps you with your thinking and writing and English a really good tip is to ask. Ask yourself a question and then answer that question, so for example it could be so simple like how am I feeling today? That could be your daily challenge, and then you write down a response of. How are you feeling today in English? This will really challenge you to think in English and writing English and really use the proper spelling and vocabulary that you have already learned. If you'd like to see a list of different types of writing responses our writing topics, you can use to start learning English. Let me know and I can definitely a blog post about that. Now last thing to mention about writing when you're actually having a real conversation with an English speaker. You're not going to be able to follow a script. You'RE NOT GONNA. Have your papers in front of you to follow? And you know look at your points and think of what to say, it's going to have to come naturally, which is why journaling and writing down things is such a great mental exercise, because it actually teaches you how to formulate your thoughts how to start conversations how to continue conversations and how to keep your ideas going. All right those are my top four tips or I. Guess I said a lot more than four tips, but my four categories to learning, English breaking it down from each skill from speaking, listening, writing and reading. Now don't forget to celebrate all the little steps in your journey, whether that means that you finally took the courage to speak to someone in English in real life or that you finally purchase your journal and you're ready to start writing. Celebrate those moments because you are taking steps to actually learn the new language, and you're actually doing something about it to achieve your goals. Languages are super. Fun and this process should not stress you out. It should actually uplift you and motivate you and get you excited for learning something new. No more excuses, okay, start these four steps and I really do think they're going to help you learn English, fast and easy I've written and tire blog post about everything. We just talked about today. So if you want to refer back to these nodes and listen to them again, or you like to learn through reading goal head over to our blog glitch. Dot Me, and you will find everything we just talked about. All right guys that wraps up my tips for today. This episode, let's get into the chat with Stephen Hi Steven. Thanks so much for joining us today on the English journey podcast. How is it going over there in Brazil? Hi, thanks for having me. Great pleasure to be at the moment. It's very hot and sunny son everything's good. Wow, that is quite the opposite of here in Canada right now it's Kumi rainy. Follow feels like it's already around the corner so quite jealous. Early, here. Wow. Amazing. So it Sunday today. So that is the day we are recording. What does a busy guy like you usually do on? Sundays what's your routine? Sundays is my day just to mess around not do much at all I. I usually play my son we watch cartoons we play football later in the day we watch football on TV that's about it really nothing nothing too exciting. That sounds awesome. Pretty much same honest as the day to recharge refocus. Yeah, absolutely. Yeah. Okay. Amazing. So let's start off by chatting more about your teaching background. So can you tell our listeners a little bit about yourself and basically how did you start teaching English? Well, a long time ago I went to university and I did my my degree was in politics and economics. The one thing I learned was that I didn't WanNa work with politics or economics. But I had no idea what I wanted to do. WanNa remember was I went to a party and I met two people who just got back from the Czech Republic and now got talking to them and said, look you gotTa do is this month long coast and then you can travel and teach I thought okay I'll do that for a couple years figure out what I WANNA do got back to England and get a proper job and here I am over twenty years later don't teaching Bannon loaf teachings that total accident I never had any inclination to be a teacher too but I absolutely love it. Very lucky. In, a way I really am intrigued by what you just said because that really resonated with me when you said proper job, can you explain a little bit? Why did you have the notion that teaching was maybe not a proper job? While when I started, it really wasn't a proper job because I was teaching just to an excuse to travel any would pay for my trips and things like this after about two years of teaching when I realized what I wanted to do I started to research and work hard at it to be a better teacher and it is a proper job but there is a there is a a an I did not really working get just messing around and traveling at the same time percent if you're going to do properly, that is a total lie but there is people do for one year two years I can see how that. They get that idea? Yep hundred percent I agree I feel like I do hear that often where people say, Oh, you know you're just a teacher or own? Yeah. Well, teachings pretty easy and then you know right away those people have never taught a day in their lives, right? Absolutely. I think people have realized recently with a quarantine unlock and tried to teach kids at home how difficult it actually is to. To be able to teach and Organiz. I'm after usually two kids imagine having thirty kids in the classroom. So right and it's also a whole different story trying to make engaging lessons not just doing the bare minimum absolutely couldn't agree more You know you do the plan long-term plan as well as short term. Not. Just making do. No need plan. ABCD everything. Absolutely. Yeah. Yeah. I'm. So you mentioned that you've been traveling around the world anti aging English. So what are some of the countries that you've taught in so far? With US jobs in Ponant, always in a tiny little town in the science spiced opponent. I loved it Danny problem with Poland was far too cold. Really really cold. at that time I don't know what it's like. Nine I also had a job in Taiwan teaching in Taiwan. that was an amazing places, a total eye opener I learned so much abide by myself, but also about two totally different culture and everything is different I taught for few months in Russia I taught in London where we had people come from all over the world to to to study in London. I. Am any Brazil to hear Janeiro for about five years for the last. Nine years be hitting grits. Hebron the size of Brazil. My Gosh I definitely did not say that name right earlier. Let's Pinson of well that's amazing. Do you feel like from traveling all over the world? This has made you teach English new and innovative ways. Absolutely. Yes Dealing with different problems that people from different backgrounds have, but also different linguistic backgrounds It teaches you that there's no one way of teaching that different people have different problems that they learn in different ways it's it's it's partly your educational background. It's the country that you come from the so many different things that go into making a person who they are an old of that has to be taken into account when you teaching an individual, all of it all of it is important one, hundred percent you're all starting with a blank slate everybody has. Some packages or you know just some prior knowledge or even sometimes not the best knowledge that kind of affects their learning and you have to kind of break those barriers absolutely couldn't agree more everybody's unique. The way you learn will be totally even if you have a twin sister, the way you learn the your needs, your objectives will be totally different deal to insist the even though you can't get any closer than that. That makes me laugh 'cause I actually do have a twin sister. No Way Era. Side definitely, relate we have completely different life paths right now. So that's cool So really excited to dive into this topic because for me, this is completely new. So definitely I'm going to be learning here too. We had a chance to chat a little bit before and you mentioned the concept linguistic landscapes. So what does this mean for those like me who have never heard of this concept before? Okay. So if you think about a traditional landscaper when you holiday in a Beautiful Hotel Open the window you've got this amazing view you can see mounts in you can be the ocean whatever this is your landscape that you can see If you talk about linguistic landscape, it's it's the language that you see in public on a day-to-day basis. So as you're walking down the streets, what language signs that you See they only one language or do you get a variety of languages so for example, hearing Curitiba in the site, the Brazil obviously the dominant language is Portuguese You also see a lot of English you see INC shop names shops are have English names or UC sometimes graffiti in English linguistic landscape is the language that you see around you. It gives you lots of information about the place In some areas, you'll have two or three different languages. So which language is the biggest one which one has the most prominence all language. Language. Languages associated with certain things. So for example, Harry in the site, the Brazil you. So time see Japanese we do have a Japanese community here. The Japanese nearly always associated with cooking with with Japanese foods. So that Japanese language. Hey I will often be associated with a specific area of your life than this case food. So in terms of the such you can. Eat. Make judgments on the area based on the language that you can see for example in. London. Nowadays, English is obviously the dominant language but depending on where you're living, you might see Polish because there's lots of potion migrants. You might say languages from from the Indian subcontinent's. Some local governments they have to that they produce leaflets and information in variety of languages to cater for people who don't speak. English. Not Well. So all this is part of your linguistic landscape in terms of the academic research. Okay. So it's basically like you're looking around in your real authentic life and you're noticing language all around you. Exactly, that now most people don't notice, they just see it they don't pay attention to it. So but my my I do my students is that because English is the second language in terms of the language, you see on the streets, they should pay attention to the language that they see and that in itself is a resource that people can love from. Once you stop paying attention it's amazing. How much variety there is in the language that we see about it's the you can see it in shop name stoop buildings will have the the name of the building will allow It depends what decade but building was constructed I. What what language the the name of the building will be in I want people stop paying attention to it it's fascinating. It's amazing. I've had a class where I I had the idea of doing this project for two classes. We ended up talking about it for about three or four weeks and even allow in future classes. People kept coming back and saying I find this I find this and they wanted to show me a picture of something they found. It's IT'S It's amazing stuff at at. We don't have to just say because in in the theory that the academic theories, the language that you see in the public sphere. But you can also then look at the products you don't have to be so strict. You can say what have you got inside your house so the products that you buy the food that you buy the perfume that you've got in your bathroom, the name of the toothpaste stuff like this. does he have an English name? They have a French name. Why does he have an English name how could you translate that into? Portuguese. What's the pronunciation of this English name isn't the same in English and your first language the so many questions you can start asking and thinking about when you start paying attention to language I find that really interesting because you know in Canada, we have two national languages so. English and French and I know so many people who they can't speak a word of French and I find that. So you know almost shocking because I tell them like have you guys not noticed signs are in French every single food product we buy has to be written in French too. So you know it almost makes you wonder how come people aren't noticing the things around them. It's literally right at your fingertips. Yeah Yeah. I mean I I've never been to Canada Brian Fascinated with with the language policy that you have If if I were there, I would just be reading the English and the French translating it noticing, which was the same which was a different. I would be doing all the time and I I would. I'm not saying I'd be flowing French but I would learn a lot of French just through that Totally one of the problems is pronunciation that When you see the word written, the tendency is to say the word in your head but with your own accents, your own pronunciation, for example, Brazilian percival seen English would and say it with Brazilian pronunciation. Brazilian Portuguese. So you do need to be aware of their limitations to what you can do do you have any tips on how we can fix pronounciation while noticing signs and linguistic lands agents were aware of it you? Youtube nowadays if you just type the word into youtube with pronunciation, practically every word has got the pronunciation. Is. A very easy resources available to us. Most people don't think about it but an. Every everywhere nowadays, you can go online and you can find the pronunciation of the what's traditionally us out said go-to addiction but you need to know the symbols and everything most people don't know that I was GonNa. Say I'm pretty sure I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure now even apps like Google translate you can take pictures of things and then it can transit four you tried this out but I have a feeling that that's possible. Absolutely. Yeah. I've seen it doomed menus and things like this. You get a basic translation of the menu is but yeah, it is amazing. Once you stop paying attention e-, eat you can go to restaurants hair Brazil and not every restaurant but a lot of restaurants would have that the default is having Menu Portuguese. But if you ask rate in English, you can get it in English and so then if you've got nothing else to do, you can just sit down and look at the English of the Portuguese and compare the two. You can take a picture of it and compare them later the so many things that you can do I noticed this because when I was living in Taiwan idol of problems learning Chinese not just. Many reasons. For Difficult Yup. But one of the problems I had was I couldn't read the language as walking down the street. And I didn't I didn't notice this until I came to Brazil and I was walking down the street and I could read the signs on I could start to learn Portuguese not by talking to anybody just walking down the street I could stotts learn Portuguese just by Reading Science And that's what I noticed that the linguistic landscape is so important or can be important as a way of learning I like this and I also think as you mentioned you need to really be seizing the opportunities you know being more of an active learner. So what you said about how if you go to a restaurant and they give you the menu in your? Native language and you know that they might possibly have it in the English language or whatever language trying to learn why not be that active learner who asks for it and actually learns in the process I. Think you have to sometimes put yourself out there you have to be okay with being uncomfortable kind of giving yourself more challenges and that's how you're really going to grow. A couldn't agree more One of the things I'm constantly trying to my my students he's making them active learners more autonomous. They can take responsibility for their own learning the resort Some people think that if if you go to class twice a week, that's enough that's all you have to do the teachable transmit the knowledge from their heads to your head, and there you got you've learned English unfortunately it's not like that the best learners take responsibility for their own learning teacher's guides more than anything else. We can't do the work for you. We can help you get to the point where you want to be, but you need to be the one to actually put in the effort. Absolutely yes, and it doesn't take a lot of effort If you ten minutes every day, it doesn't have to be linguistic landscapes. There are so many different things you can do if you do ten minutes every day, you will very quickly seeing improvement and that doesn't matter. It doesn't matter what you want to learn. does a lot of research that shows the best way to learn anything is by doing a little bit often not by doing an hour on a Sunday but doing ten minutes everyday, you learn a lot quick. Making making this into good habits so that the beginning of everytime or the end of every day, just before lunch or something for ten minutes to do something in English or whatever it is you're trying to learn. Yup, totally. We've talked about this a couple times on the PODCAST. We'd really recommend for you guys to really be adding some even if it's not like you mentioned language learning but adding your new routine into your day and making an actual schedule. So saying that, okay, I'm going to do this twenty minutes every day or I'm going to do this. You know after I come back home from work. Once you have an actual plan, you can actually start the process. Really absolutely. And Ashby said, it doesn't matter what you do. You just got to do something and emits ideally it'd be something that you like because if you like doing it, you're more you're more the the chances are you're going to continue doing it. So if you like listening to songs listen to songs but they're just listened to the song, analyze the lyrics think about the lyrics whatever it is you like doing. Do it I do it every day right and take it a step further. Absolutely. Yeah. I see people on facebook and stuff through listening to songs. It's not that simple. You do. You do need to listen to it that read the lyrics that think about the pronunciation things like this. He's not just listening to the song, but yet going the extra mile taking the extra step and you will learn it. Being a monolingual I I grew up monolingual. and. There's this idea that being monolingual is natural. But until very recently being monolingual was unnatural if you look at the history of mankind. Of Humanity. We've always known two three, four languages. It's only with a decree of Nation States with your in England you speak English, Free France, you speak French. Suddenly with that that we we get this mono-lingualism, the brain, the human brain has an amazing capacity to learn languages. That's so interesting. You're actually so right I I actually always thought it's it's we know I don't want to say a weird because I don't WanNA call anyone out here but I felt like it's a little bit I don't know. I just found. If you only speak one language, your whole world is kind of in one tunnel. You're only seeing the world in one lens. Absolutely. Yeah. It's like if you never leave your home city what do you know about what you know about the world and what do you know about your home city you army land about your home city by leaving your home city even if it's just a holiday same with with language if you only speak your language, you don't even know your own language. It's so true So okay this might be a tough question I'm just wondering if I was someone who I really wanted to learn English, but I was not living in a English speaking country. How could this idea of maybe linguistic landscapes or something similar? How can that help me and what can I do to try out this tip? Okay Well I live in a a non English speaking country. And English is so dominant throughout the world that is very rare that you don't see. English. I advertisers, appetizers around the world they they're always putting using. English words that might be songs in English a local artists might be playing a song in English. If you watch an international sports match football tennis started in like this, you will see advertising in English English is everywhere. It's difficult to find as a place where there is no English sometimes, you don't realize it because it might be a similar word in your first language, but he is everywhere So it's it's very difficult. Not Finding that the key is paying attention right on. Doing something with that language to making a note of it taking a photograph Ovitz, I have students who they take photographs with on their mobile phone and they have a a a folder Google photos folder where they put all the words they find English and they put them in this folder. And then when they put a new photo in the folder, look back at the old photos and may remember the words and. They they re. that they revised the line which just by taking a new photo and putting into their albums. the the first is to start paying attention to the language around you Then you can start to ask yourself questions. And Be Critical Thinkers why is this in English? Why did this appetizer decided to put this? In English? Wise. This shop have an English name. Why didn't they have a Portuguese name? Will all the local language is a word for this in the local language. has is their translation maybe there is English there and it's translation is the translation bigger than English is a small than English start to think critically about why the languages that are not to interact with language journey so really asking questions going deeper as we mentioned, that's such a good strategy. -solutely yeah, there is I do run a group of facebook group Linguistic landscape. Roadmap, it's called map of the up linguistic landscape mu l. l. for shorts and we have people all over the world. Posting interesting photos a the idea is he could be in any language but if it's in a aligned with, that's not English you need to provide a translation but something that's interesting about your linguistic landscape We've got about five thousand members Ni- from all over the world It's predominantly English lots of English teachers because we tend to be more nerdy. To I language, but we do have students as well. We have people not otherwise related to to language. So come on at join this group we we have two very friendly group where very nice people you can. You can do that as well if if you find something in English. Put On facebook group people will pay attention people will make a note to this thing. That, I'm going to ask you to send me the link of this. So I can put in the description ash show notes afterwards. I rooted no problem. Awesome. Well, thank Stephen for explaining such a unique concept and honestly a way to learn the language authentically.
