"You know? So I know definitely Tyler Adams wants to be care, definitely. Even Jordan Henderson looked surprised when he was like, me? I'm just like four tournaments ago. Yeah, that was interesting. Yeah, so I'd be feeling pretty good about that at that point in time. So one thing we've talked about a lot, by the way, for years on this podcast, it's how different drawers can feel, not all draws are equal. Some drawers feel like drawers. But on the whole, they feel like wins or they feel like losses. Today ended on as even, but we suspect the mood is very different in the England and American camps actually Garrett Southgate referred to that. He said he had to go in and try and lift the spirit of his own team. As a player, do you feel that at all or in the end is it all about the returns? A point is a point is a point. This is still a group stage game, England is still top of the group. The U.S. still two draws from two games without that much momentum on the table, but a lot of momentum in terms of the way we all feel about their performance. Yeah, look, I think there's stuff, you know, there's not really there's no more victories in the game, right? But I think with this one, I know from being in the locker room after the Wales game, you're definitely disappointed, 'cause I can tell you one thing, those players are feeling upset that they tie that team. The way they came out in that first half, I can assure you that they were very upset that they weren't able to finish some of those chances. And then today, yeah, I think that was a more victory, a good draw. Draw that feels almost like a win because as a player, you know, with social media, you see everything that's going on and what everybody's saying about you. And some of these guys are planning an English Premier League and they're hearing all the time, you know, U.S. soccer, blah, blah, blah. You guys call it soccer. It's not soccer. And all that spiel, but I think they're definitely feeling a lot better about themselves. And they now know they control their own destiny. They usually looked. I'd say this is a compliment. They look disappointed at the end that they hadn't won. And that's good. I like that. I like that, but I will tell you there are way more disappointed against me as I tell you that much. But let's cast our eyes ahead to that Iran game. Now do or die. And as good as our boys were today, still having trouble picking that lock in the final third. There was that one incandescent moment pulisic to wear that connect in the first half of the Gates whales, but it's been largely half chances after that for the United States. How do you understand looking at this in the final third? What happens? I guess I'm asking, I know you're not a doctor. But why are we so constipated? I'll tell you what, to be honest, that game worries me a bit because I don't think there will be those many transition moments where you cushion gets a ball after turnover and plays way into space like that. Because the U.S. is going to have more possession in that game. I believe so. Yeah. And I think I've shown it's been hard for us to break teams down, you know? And unfortunately it's been an issue for us for many years, no offense to the guys who play that position, but we don't have that crucial number 9, like a Harry Kane. As you saw today, even he's shown his ability to hold a play, bringing others into attacks, stepping on the ball, giving guys to bring in any tradition. Well, yeah, that's it, yeah. So that worries me a bit. I ran into counter, you know? And I don't know, it goes without saying, I think you guys brought it up, you know, geopolitical issues aside and stuff, but some people may be understood how much Iran really wants to beat the crap out of America, right? Yeah. I mean, I'm just saying it. I'm sure that. So, but no, I think, yeah, I don't know, I worry a bit about it. Just barely angry that we call it soccer. 'cause they call it, what do they call it? In Farsi. I don't know. I was going to offer a lame jug. Iranian

"Oh my God. Look from James now. That's the beauty of football. It's not just in its ability to find people together. It's to completely change the atmosphere of a room in half a second. Oh my God. Can we go Brenda, who's bronny? Bronnie aronson. Oh yeah. In every regard. American boy. I did yeah, it got blessed. I did interview in English Premier League player recently. It was not Harry Kate. And I asked him, what he thought, the United States challenge, just to throw a question and interview. And he said, this is the quote he goes. Nothing really. And I was like, that's a follow work that didn't lead to come with a hard hitting for a lot. As I said, can you name an American player? And he said, he thought for a minute and he goes, Clint Dempsey? Does he still play for them? And I was like, in that moment, I was like, holy crap, John. We can absolutely zero respect. Yeah, I mean, I will say for America, I do think it is going to be too early, partly because you haven't hurt enough for this to win a World Cup yet, but also that this team is young and very, very talented, but very, very raw. I do think they're young and exactly the right way. Talented in exactly the right way. And the next World Cup, they could be dangerous, especially, especially given where it is the only thing there will be how much, how can they play under that kind of pressure when you're a team in four or 5 years time, which is a legitimate contender. That's going to be a lot of pressure to have here. I can't wait for that World Cup Qatar will be defending champions. I'm going to ask them up big time. Finally, back in America, a country that's never committed any human rights abuses.

What was it about you that this made you have our nation of 330 million people to be the first American in our nation's history to lead the team into the English Premier League as a CEO. What is it about you? Can you tell me the answer? I think at a young age, if you come in you think you know everything, people are just going to kick you to the carbon so these kids. But I have approached everything saying, I can help you. I can help improve the situation. But tell me what needs to be done to find a solution to make us better. And that is in listening and actually taking the guidance and wisdom of others around you. And if you listen and you implement what you think is right along with what other people have advised you will help bring competitive success then you're on your way. "United at his introduced longtime English soccer star Wayne Rooney as the new head coach. What does that mean for the team? Sean and Brennan talked about that with WTO senior sports director and D.C. United play by play announcer, Dave Johnson. I'm still in somewhat disbelief because obviously I love the game and I never thought in my lifetime. I believe you welcoming Wayne Rooney to D.C. united not only once, but now twice and this time is a head coach. But again, let's put in perspective. He's England's all time leading score. England is fairly serious about soccer. England gave the world soccer. He's England's all time score. We are talking about one of the greatest players to ever play the game. And what we've noticed in his brief time as a manager, head coach in England, he is approaching this coaching career with the same kind of passion. He approached his plane crew with. He showed up at his introductory press conference in a track suit. He was at training this morning. He's not here for a vacation. He's here to make a difference. His goal, he says, is to eventually coach at the top level. That would be the English Premier League, or one of the leagues in Europe, because right now those are the top leagues. If he's doing achieve that goal, that's music to D.C. United fans ears because he knows he needs to create a success story here in Washington. He hasn't been coaching a long time, but the team is making a major commitment to him, contract wise. Well, and talking with the owner Jason levy and I think he just has watched him over his career. Again, as I said, not only as a player, but also I think what the listeners need to understand is the character of Wayne Rooney, the team that he took over in England, ran into financial trouble. It was a team that suddenly had to sell players. It was a team that suddenly had a bare bone squad. It was a team that suddenly just had a group of young players and not stars. All these situations that came up with this team Darby county, a star player if you will might have said, you know what, I don't need this. I can walk away. People will understand why do I stay and try to make something out of this and he did. And almost saved the club from relegation, even though they were fined 21 points are essentially deducted 7 games for financial irregularities. So it was horrendous situation. Off the field, yet he stayed committed through the entire process. And I think that says a lot about, again, Wayne Rooney's character and also his seriousness when he takes a job and he accepts a challenge. He's not to faint of heart that he's just going to walk away when it all of a sudden gets tough because it gets tough and coaching. "Of infighting in extreme political views rather than trying to get things done for the good of the country. That's right up there. A short term approach of trying to get elected, but not making a substantive change, not working on the environment, not really pushing social justice for it as we should. Now the good news, the balancing factor, that is, this generation, and I can see it in every walk has bought into the fact that we need to change policies for global warming. We need to have social justice in the world in the United States. And so I'm optimistic that we can overcome that, but this has been a very tough period the last I would say four or 5 years have been a very tough period. And you overlay COVID and the Ukraine war, and it's almost like a perfect storm of some bad dynamics that we have to get through. Being capital is a multi asset investor. You look at all corners of the market private equity and venture included, but the public market volatility of the first 6 months of this year. What is your assessment of that? Do you see parallels, which is cliche at this point with the dotcom bubble with the financial crisis? I think it's different than the dot com bubble. Stock markets over history of time have gone up and down. And it seems like every generation that hasn't been burned has this irrational exuberance, especially when it comes to growth and new technologies. And so you often see an overheated period followed by saw dot com. You saw a crash. But then back up over the next 5 to ten years. So I see the tech side is just a correction because values were way too high. In my opinion, any models that we were running, we stayed away from a lot of the companies. Thank goodness that we're losing hundreds of $1 million a year and you had to believe in a 20 year trajectory to make profits and finally the market and the environment caught up with that. Now obviously that was exacerbated by the things we talked about the effect of the Ukraine war, the effect of this. On top of that, but I think there was a correction coming in technologies for sure. You stayed away from technology, you've been looking at sports. You placed a bid for Chelsea football club. You were not successful. Todd boley, who is ultimately successful, has this idea that actually the English Premier League, Chelsea being an example, is undervalued. Do you agree with that assessment? I think there's a lot of growth in major football slash soccer leagues across the world. You've seen a dynamic of now global investment. And what's happened if you step back is companies like Google Apple Microsoft, Amazon, they want people to use their systems they want eyeballs. Yeah. And in the history of time, sports has been a great investment for people who want to get eyeballs. The Fox Television network was based on a big NFL contract. So you've seen rising revenues come in for all these sports clubs because it's the most compelling programming. And I think specifically soccer slash football and basketball where I'm invested have real upsides because they're global sports. Are you still looking? For another football club, soccer club? Sure. I'm a believer in kind of a multi club strategy approach and there's a lot of synergies in terms of bringing the best statistical techniques in, bringing ticketing techniques in, understanding NFTs, and web three and how blockchain can help these clubs. So do you think the club's going

And almost saved the club from relegation even though they were fined 21 points are essentially deducted 7 games for financial irregularities. So it was horrendous situation. Off the field, yet he stayed committed through the entire process. And I think that says a lot about getting Wayne Rooney's character and also his seriousness when he takes

"I'll give a damn what you're doing over there. I don't give a damn what you're building over there. I'm building this, and this is how we're doing it. That's how the SEC approaches business. I don't think the SEC cares about anybody else because they feel like they're the cream of the crop, and don't need to do anything for anybody in any way. And that's a different way to live. Do you actually see this? You made the analogy, the potential to have relegation be involved, which I know is a very European soccer sentiment here that we don't even have in the states, even the MLS doesn't have that. But I do wonder, is this going to start to turn into it's weird that we're kind of going the super conference, almost a regionalized thing of in Europe, you could be a fan of Syria, or La Liga, or the English Premier League, are we going to get people who are just like, oh no, I'm a fan of the SEC or the fan of the Big Ten. I'm a fan of the big 12. And I know that already kind of exists, because we see that maybe start to maybe take even a greater hold. I think that's what Chris venini wasn't necessarily thinking about. Like, when you were 20 years out, if you end up with a 30 team conference, why do you need any other conferences? You all keep telling me, beat the best of the best, but the best of the best cycles. Like if I had had that conversation with you in the 90s, you'd say, well, you got to beat Nebraska. And now who cares if you're beaten Nebraska, ain't taking anything? You don't get a blue ribbon for that, right? So I think that the wild change here is that if we really go mega conferences, I don't know why I need anybody else. I got the teams in my mega conference. I watched the teams of my mega conference. You go enjoy the teams in your mega conference, have a nice day. I don't understand why we wouldn't head there. Now, where does Notre-Dame fall in all of that is a big question. And I told you I played, I don't have time to play it here, so we'll play it in a little bit when we come back because Notre-Dame is going to be a big enough brand that you have to keep Notre-Dame in the conversation. And the SEC is going to have to figure out what the right look, long term. If you're the SEC, you're looking around saying Notre-Dame's going to end up somewhere. And when they end up somewhere, they're either going to be with us or they're against us, right? Like it's that whole, you're either on our side or you are against us. Maybe that's why the SEC is going to be looking at Notre-Dame saying, where are you with this? If you're looking around in Oregon, I don't care about geography anymore. They don't care about geography. I'm just looking at Oregon and the value of Oregon. Man, okay? Maybe I want Oregon. Maybe I want Washington. Maybe I want everybody that can bring more money to the table. And if you can bring money to the table, I'm going to grow my mega conference and then I'm going to take my mega conference over to my playground and I'm not going to give a damn about yours. "Welcome to this edition of ESPN FC alongside Craig Burley on Sebastian Salazar, great to have you with us here on ESPN+ in just a little bit. We'll hear from Shaka his lap. Fior tov, as well, but Craig let's start with the news of the day, or at least one bit of news of the day. Calvin Phillips, the 26 year old English international looks like he's ready to make the move from Leeds to Manchester City for a reported fee of 42 million pounds. He's been with Leeds since he made his first team debut with the club back in 2000 and 15. For more perspective on this move, we're gonna welcome into the show, the four mentioned fuel talk, but Craig, I want to start with you from the Manchester City perspective. This is the right move. I think this should be a good business. A lot of people I'm a big fan of this guy had a injury ravage season, but he's a regular international footballer now. He has got a lot of Premier League experience. He's very dynamic, can play multiple possessions across the middle of the park or you can go into the back line. Passage the ball well. Not as well as some of the city players, so that's going to be an up in the standard forum. But Berlin fernandinho is gone. You've got Rodri there who are thanks a terrific player and I don't think Calvin Phillips walks straight into the team for me. Because I think Rodri is a terrific player. But when you think about it, they've had Rodri and fernandinho should have been able to balance it. They'd have an often played with to more defensive midfielders, but some things they have. But you've got to have cover, haven't you? You've got to have old alternatives and I think this is a great move because he's one of England's best talents. Yeah, and Craig mentions fernandinho moving on then, but of course Rodri is still very much in the mix for Manchester City. Is this how you would have strengthened the city squad with this move? Well, I think it's well, Craig analyzes well, but I want to add the English part of it. I mean, the three big signings have done is Grealish, harland, and Phillips, two of them English. And I think that is important also for city to show that. But I think this is a matter of great business, Phillips is in dynamic, is enormous. He's got us. I don't know if there's an English, he got a contained contagious way of playing football because when you see him play, he wants to get to the players around him doing that as well. And you can see that Pep Guardiola now is on a mission. He changes a bit in and around the team, getting new kind of skills in there. And in this mad world of fees all over the place, I think 42 million sounds like quite good business as bizarre as is my sound. So I think that it did this is great for Manchester City and there are absolutely strengthening themselves. And I think it's interesting to see how Liverpool Manchester City so narrow, of course, last season kind of mirror themselves in the way they are signing players. It's quite interesting. John why English? You said Manchester City need English players. Why? I think it's important when you have foreign owners, you have a foreign coach, mostly foreign players. I think it's important to have a core of good English players in your team because we should never forget the master city as an English club and we have to stick to that and I play in the English Premier League and call me old fashioned, but I think there should be some English. I came to England in 1993. I was a guest at TV programs telling about how to be a foreigner in English football. Now with all different. So I think that it's so important that Manchester City also have that because most of the fans in the stadium are also kind of the English fans going in there. So I think that is important. I don't think that should be underestimated. But what about the player perspective here? You said you don't see him walking into the 11. It's a World Cup year. There's months till the tournament. That could be a concern. Yeah, I'm in a sport. I think it will be a big grain for this light to leave leads. It's home these home club, but you know, maybe Bernardo Silva gets this move.

"These generations. And so what you're describing TJ to be blunt again here is another paradox. This is a progressive cause in theory, women's sports being funded dramatically by people who are complicit in an autocratic regime. Yeah, progressive in this case is in the eye of the beholder. The oligarchs who run these teams and pay these salaries. I don't think they're in it for the cause. The economics of it are such that both in terms of money and in terms of social capital that they place great value in these teams they own and the success of those teams and they're willing to pay a ton of money to do it. And what those athletes now are going to have to confront is the same question that the English Premier League and the NBA have to confront right now. You know, you had a Russian oligarch, Mikhail prakaram, who owned the nets until a couple of years ago. And it's a huge fight in the UK right now with the Brahma vich being forced to sell Chelsea, one of the, you know, one of the great franchises in that country's history is in utter chaos because of it. And people know where oligarchs get their money. These are, you know, these are not stupid people running these organizations. They could Google and figure out how all the guards get rich and who supports them. But they were willing to live with it because the money was so good. And that falls on the athletes too is if you're taking the check and you like the money and you like the attention and maybe there's good reason socially to do it. But this is who you're getting into business with. Well, TJ, I do wonder now if we are at a turning point, a real one because of the invasion of Ukraine because of the reckoning out in the cold light of day that you're describing that maybe this isn't a side job that people are going to eagerly sign up for despite the benefits financial and lifestyle that you've described. Like where are the WNBA players besides Brittany griner now? Where are they geographically at this point who usually play in Russia? Well, a lot of them are home. Others are going to be looking at teams in Italy and Israel and turkey. Look, with all those countries, there are hot button geopolitical issues without a doubt. And if anybody, I don't care what sport it is, men's women's U.S. UK, Russia, the way some owners make their money. People are going to have.

They went down to not ten not nine but eight men and and him and his assistant were sent off. He walked right behind the bench vancouver and sat down four behind his bench. They went down to eight men and they played with seven outfield players for the last twenty five minutes in a five two loss to bet this. It was to put it lightly hysterical.
