Small Ships in Alaska: A Guide To Cruising off the Beaten Path

"The big ship alaska season is probably over for this year. However there are four key cruise operators that are still going to cruise because they are small ships and they are not band. They do not have to stop and canada. And those cruise lines are alaskan dream cruises american cruise lines lindblad expeditions and un crews there all featuring small ships sailing under a us flag without the need to visit a foreign port so christopher wanted to know like what are those crews like what what is something like that look like what is the itinerary like and as such a good question. So i'm gonna go through it with you guys. Because i want you to know it's very different from a big ship cruise but a sample one on cruise adventure. Let's just look at their alaska glacier country seven night cruise and see what this is like. Okay you're gonna get one day in glacier bay national park. Excuse me joined by park ranger you're going to have up-close looks at dawes marjorie and grand pacific glacier. Those are that's three glaciers. You're going to bushwack in the tonga's national forest. You're going to go to the fords terror wilderness area by skiff and hike inland. If you want. I'm sure a lot of this hiking in book bush whacking is all very optional. On i think it's chicken gough island you'll see humpback whales and frederick sound and the chatham strait you'll do wildlife searches for black and brown bears a number of areas you're gonna kayak paddle board and skip if you want to. You're going beach comb. You're going to visit tide pools and you're going to go on forest ecology discoveries. But you're still going to visit different ports in fact you might embark in juneau and that's very different right. You actually embark in june so you can get started there then on day two you might go to icy strait have a nice cup of coffee get snug in your kayak and glide around and kayak that date again. There's loads of options. Then you might have your third day. Glacier bay national park your fourth day might be in the chatham strait seeing so many different things. If you'd like to go backpacking and go skipping on a boat. You can day five. You might go to q. Island day six frederick sound day seven endicott arm and dawes glacier and day eight juno now again this particular one that i read to you guys is more all about explorations. Less about port stops but they do have several itineraries from une cruised that visit the ports the standard ports as well. But since you're doing round trip juno they're just really focused on adventure and exploration and things like that. They're

"Believe that I believe the mayor underestimates the scope of the problem I think you're on the right underestimates the duration of the problem and I don't think they've used enough police to address the situation because it's inarguable but that was not addressed last night right the fax okay this is a glass of water this is not a glass of milk the fact there's no facts in life what happened in New York City was inexcusable New York City police commissioner Dermot Shea firing back telling fox news that he expects better from elected leaders he also defended New York City mayor bill de Blasio here is the NYPD chief addressing addressing miracle Endicott governor concerts that are placing the blame for where we are with this situation on the backs of the men and women of this police department that are putting their lives on the line I think it's disgraceful and you should be ashamed of himself is politics in this what's right and that is a disgraceful comments so you don't appreciate when the governor had to say because he went on to say as a developer tech property I'm sorry I think my point is that self evident so do you think that in retrospect you could use either more men and women on the force last night could have been more proactive in the face of all of this will you be tonight how would you describe obviously you know it's a difficult situation when you start practices in the New York story it's it's a country wide story when you look at the incident Minneapolis that horrible financed almost immediately by police executives across the country but there's a bigger story and it's not just about this incident I think and we recognize that and we recognize and accept publicly many times welcoming protests we respect the concerns I think we have to look in the mirror as police executives across this country to recognize that we have to do better at times too but there are protests and they're honest discussions that have to take place from both sides will get out of this together I think but what what you see on somebody's videos whether it's in New York City or other parts of the state of this country with the looting with the attacks on police sources and you know it it's it's very difficult times and it's disarming we we have had just in the last twenty four hours.

"Endicott shoes a lot of restraint but then when some of the demonstrators tried to break through the ranks immediately started attacking cops the cops fought back with equal force sometimes greater force seventy arrests were made now this is New York City not the epicenter of what happened in Minneapolis on the south side to George Floyd by the fall comes from the third preaching this was Union Square and seventy arrests were made is it possible that in Minneapolis say should have been seventy times three maybe times that by three maybe a few hundred arrests made by this time and it's been nothing oh oh that's right I'm sorry but I might loose I forgot the Braves Minneapolis police department it's been in retreat and then surrender they should name that preaching forza Renda they arrested a CNN crew right yeah it is C. N. N. crew doing a stand up I guess at about five o'clock in the morning after the thugs Intel gets took over the priest saying and they arrested that C. N. N. cruel because they were loitering and looting record you talk about being impotent ineffective just having a lost you'll coolly owns your way pulls cops in Minneapolis if you couldn't even defend your house you should turn in your guns in your badges you don't deserve to be police officers and I know it's because the media there may be a Jacob Frye told you to stand down I know he told you to stand down there's no doubt about it and his police commissioner Arredondo basically gave into the mob would not even protect the third precinct or the cops they had to abandon ship our number is one eight hundred eight four great WABC that's one eight hundred eight four eight nine two two two so the president upon seeing this like the nation in the world did decided Hey I'm going to go back out on Twitter and we'll talk about his battles with Twitter later on in the show and he tweeted out these dogs are dishonoring the memory of George Floyd and I won't let that happen just spoke to governor Tim walls and told him the military is with him all the way any difficulty and we will assume control but when the looting starts the shooting starts thank you and then all of a sudden Twitter decide we got to attach a warning to this because that last part when the looting starts the shooting starts that's inciting violence well you know Twitter realize you millennials and hipsters but do not know the history whatever this man all right I remember the blackout in nineteen seventy seven and may are of no consequence a beam had to stand on five ten telephone books to be seen at a press conference after two days of rioting and looting and pillaging throughout the Bronx and Brooklyn decided to send the cops out there which shot guns and he announced if you loot we shoot that is the universal language to all thugs Intel gets that if you're going to continue to look you're going to get shot and guess what they stopped this is what happens in the aftermath of superstorm sandy I remember walking through Hamilton beach the the least known part of New York City which is attached to how would be try next to JFK airport they were under water and on plywood that the owners of the houses they assembled in big red letters it said if you loot we shoot it's happened in Florida it's happening Georgia North Carolina whenever they've been hurricanes of storms it's happened in the Midwest whatever that tornado was come through and we can have it P. pull the strap themselves up with their weapons and they let you know in advance which is the right thing to do if you loot we shoot and your Twitter has decided that the president posting the warning which was really a warning to all the rabble rousers that if you loot we gonna start shooting with the United States military A. K. A. the National Guard that's a warning that's not violence that's to alert you that these are the ramifications if you trying to burn down the city again for a fourth night and if you try to loot and if you try to hurt people and destroyed residential retail and wholesale property and they took it down and before that the president was a milder in fact I would be more upset than the president when he said this after watching what he transpired in the streets of south Minneapolis and that means turning general FBI general to take a very strong look and see what went on because it was a very very bad thing that I saw I saw it last night and I didn't like it I was weak there was no so many takes it up a notch as you watch the third precinct being burnt to the ground around the cops abandoning when the looting starts the shooting starts absolutely yeah I don't know if many of you old timers remember but do you remember the movie Brian Manzullo chill fort Apache in the Bronx actually no I have I don't want any idea what was on the roof it's a cop in always sunny to it though gold and you remember which actor was looking at him and never said anything no I do not abided by the blue wall of silence I'm sure there are listeners out there who remember but all during the seventies all during the seventies fort Apache was under siege it was right on Simpson street in the heart of the south Bronx people came there take two bottles a two rocks they fired shots at fort Apache well they they they burned tires in the streets it will allow riots gangs there the the the savage nomads the black spades I mean it it just started endless attacks on the precinct and the cops know before so their precinct never abandon the precinct fort Apache they just brought in reinforcements they did that in the aftermath of ad no women remember that young Haitian American who was on the floor of the bathroom at the seventieth precinct called for tombstone violated by Justin Volpe and Charles wars both of whom went away and did time for that in nineteen ninety seven remember that one thousand said surrounded for tombstone they threatened to storm the seventieth precinct and take it over in Brooklyn and I remember was Rudy Giuliani was in a helicopter overhead as he was watching the proceedings and he ordered the police at headquarters I think that was separate state for who was there at the time who had replaced his previous police commissioner but he ordered him don't give up the precinct don't let them inside at that precinct and they didn't this is so weak so feckless the police will never be able to patrol the streets of south Minneapolis again and have any effect on this and likewise if you know the city parts of north Minneapolis which has even more severe problems one eight hundred eight four ray W. "Here's what's happening a couple of fitness experts at Endicott college a husband and wife were asked for the call to come up with a fitness plan to keep students and others active while they're stuck at home Jacob and Arissa Mickey spoke with WBZ's Carl Stevens workers and not self trying to get information out to the community I dealt with everything that's going on right now well one of the main issue that I feel people are having a good hi style it's very difficult obviously when you're confined to your home to be able to really exercise and shape so what we were trying to do is basically just put together very simple steps like some basic knowledge and some very simple steps object you do think that people can do at home that's the kind of help stay in shape you know keep the muscles you know in good form and that sort of thing and one one of the reasons why we referenced he well let's hope that that was put together the Endicott athletics H. that was put together by our athletic director one of our actor and strengthening national department yet but a training department a kind of a collaboration just the on the but it has a product useful tools and reference to kind of get people good information and then ideas down things that they can do at home to you know stay in shape and that during this time period when it's really difficult with all the gym clothes and and being confined to the home and I'm not really being able to go outside all that much why did you guys create what you created I would say in addition to what to expect we understand that right now especially with what's going on this is something that could work Hudock if we ever experienced before so everyone apart everyone had now taken on the role of the manhole where isolating whether it taking care of their kids full time as well as working from home having you okay and we know that IT and track and also go hand in hand with that though Endicott approach at the bank that we kind of caught in the act how can individual day critically fat but at the same time mentally fit as well and so where you know the exercises that we put together and talking about getting up and being active for thirty to sixty minutes a day we're hoping that in your best as a way to add a little bit of structure into their gang which may be lacking and not only that you're gonna have to wait could not get up and get active but a way to kinda help some of that federal burden that they may feel about and what a great way to really incorporate your entire family and get your kids during respected or your husband your instructions as well and getting them back yeah decreasing anxiety is at a premium but it's an important thing to do yeah and I feel as though what that new media have covered which right now is this idea of physical right now because so many individual got back but what I think we're failing to kind of kill it really highlight that while physical help maybe taking a call right now mental health as well and in fact anyone older adults and children who have baby you're going to school and having their teams and they're now working from home where do you usually where they feel safe and all of a sudden now they're stuck at home all day so physically active it's something that can really help return IT extract and hopefully bring a little bit of joy into anyone's life right now their fitness guide is available to anyone it's on the Endicott college athletic training website Texas governor Greg Abbott comes up with a plan to reopen his state's economy it's a multi tiered plan for state parks re open Monday but visitors must wear face coverings or mass social distancing must be maintained and no groups larger than five are allowed Wednesday governor Greg Abbott says more medical procedures will be allowed just one example of this would be a diagnostic test for suspected cancer and then Friday all retail stores will be allowed to reopen but in a to go order curbside style only he simply what are the product and you pick it up or have it delivered to the state will then reassess the situation on April twenty seventh if progress is good some restaurants and movie theaters could reopen Dennis Foley ABC news San Antonio a surgeon coronavirus cases linked to a food processing plant in Iowa here's ABC's Ryan burl in the last week Black Hawk county Iowa went from twenty one cases of corona virus to more than one hundred and fifty Black Hawk county sheriff Tony Thompson did not mention Tyson foods by name but said his office visited a business and more could have been done to protect employees our entire county wide healthcare delivery and reduce virus.

"Go there you go. So I listened for two hours every day. And I started to get really good. Then I went to Binghamton I started with with blues. Jazz bans. My first public performance ever was at Endicott hall, and and Binghamton and then when I came to DC in eighty seven after I graduated I started whistling at blues clubs like open mic nights. And then then I discovered that received. I mean, I would I would imagine it a blues club people would expect somebody come up there with a harmonica or something like that. But when you come up when you whistle. We ever booed off the stage. How did it work? Well, it's nice is that so simple answer is. No, thankfully, I was. Not booed off. Put people kind of giggle at first. Yeah. It's like the first time I did the national anthem. So I've done the national anthem at the wizards. I've done at the nationals. And and at first people are like you can hear almost a rumble through the audience. But then they realize you're not Roseanne Barr. Trashing the peace, and like, wow, that's really good. So the feedback was good. So anyway, I discovered this international whistling competition. And I show up cold. I didn't know how good I was relative to other champion whistlers. And I wanna prize the first year is in ninety three go back the next year. I win the grand championship on the tonight show on the today show all hell breaks lose. It is just insane. And so then for the past thirty years, I've I've been able to have these really interesting corporate jobs. I worked in the White House over on Capitol Hill and worked at the Carlisle group an investment firm for the past eighteen years, but then I had the whistling side by side. So I've just got to do interesting things with it. And so so I wrote this book about the intersection between Wall Street whistling and politics and just funny stories, and and the book is called find your whistle..
