Restaurants Face Obstacles as Delta Variant Spreads

"The service sector of our economy was hit hard early on in the pandemic. Now as a key component of it the restaurant industry starts to rebound concern over the delta variant of cove in nineteen is one factor that could threaten that growth in some parts of the country. Consumers are rethinking their return to dining out my colleague. Heather had covers the restaurant industry and she joins me now to talk about these challenges. Heather glad you're here. Thanks so much heather. This is not just anecdotal. There is actual data on this retreat from restaurants. What exactly do the numbers show. Yeah so restaurants had been having a really great summer A lot of chains had reported really good earnings in the last stretch but more recently. Now that there's so much news about delta things have gotten a little more mixed so same store sales in the week ending. July twenty fifth or the worst performance in the last five weeks still up over twenty nine teen levels. But it does show some slowing. That's according to block box and in la which is one market. That's had one of these. Mass mandates returned it shows that visits to restaurants. Were down so we are seeing some slowing in certain pockets where there has been a lot of attention on this where customers maybe just getting a little anxious and questioning their return to dining out again is the delta variant the only factor behind his apprehension. I think the news around delta is the major issue. But i do think you know the return of some of these restrictions like mass mandates again and just hito more caution about being in indoor spaces has gotten some people spooked about dining out. That could mean that they're going to return to some to go activity. Doing take out again but in terms of actually going to a restaurant being able to take off your mask eat and drink in a relaxed atmosphere. It is tempering some of that enthusiasm that we really saw going into this period

"Slash. Be okay. This is my ran every time this year we now are in the true dead period to the nfl. All these teams are off now. It's the end of june. They don't come back to the end-july and this is the time you were as a front office executive. I say this every year because players are truly untethered to their team. There's no meetings. There's no zoom. There's no meetings with coaches. there's no organiz workouts there's a camps there off and now they off but they're off before the six month grind begins the end of july when i say grind always liken it to submarine where are in for six months after being off for a while so there will be partying. There will be players getting in trouble already have been And that's just normal. I talk about my time at the pack where i would just cringe this time of year. I'd be around. Everyone take vacation. I wouldn't take it till i got a layer signed up for training camp. You just get the calls from unrecognizable numbers especially at night. You're just word but that's what we're going to right now. These young people. They're going to party again. Were getting out of covid. So it's a real kind of opening renaissance time and you were in. I worry but that's where we are in life. It's going to happen and you know my famous story again. Leave it here with running back ninety devonport for the packers. We'd actually just drafted him and I got a call. One day on a golf course from an unrecognizable number in florida is a detective in blesses. Hardy sounded so matter of fact when he said this he said we have to. We have one of your players in custody here. I said what he do he said well. He defecated in a woman's laundry hamper. And i said two words that were heard over the golf course. He wiped he defecated in the women's laundry hamper. So it got out..

"But i love him. I think he's in the future of the year for sure. That's fair fares. Very unbiased for somebody had like eighteen chelsea players in the invest not to get cancelled. Man another podcast is public up to me. I would say like literally chelsea every answer. You want kappa player of the year but shit. Oh i like it. I like it. I'm gonna go david moyes. I'm going to give david moyes might put coach of the year. I know that you know west ham. If they got a got gotten tap for like you'd have to give someone. They moist the coach. The but i feel like just because they fell out of the top floor. They still had such a good year. I mean this is a team that felt like iridiscent away in august. People like they're probably going to get relegated back. Spread was on the program. He's a west ham fan. He's like yeah. I think west ham. I get relegated. This season Listen he's not alone at throw max out of the bus but man they were just. It was no fluke. They were good like west was good this season. So i gotta give dave moyes while i'm going to give him my life coach of the year So we got papin and david moyes we go. Tell me brendan rodgers. Okay fair good. Show the show. Yeah what a what a win in the fa. The oh my god. that's good. I mean listen even same thing. He fell out of the top four so locks for the same reason like if they weren't top four but i mean they both probably couldn't get top floor was setting luster. What would have to get knocked out of the but yes I would was. Because i just felt like he had less tailed Rogers working with allow us talent or at least less money than most teams especially the teams that they're fighting. It's won't david moyes for that reason. But listen brennan rogers good shout he definitely deserves some points all right. We are feeling we're going really slow here. I'm going to keep you guys forever. Maybe we'll hustle up a little bit So the season is now down and chelsea are the champions of the champions of champions of of england and everybody else to go through the whole list but almost as soon as they handed out the silverware players coaches in. You know people are just moving along. They're all you know just reminded us this is a business and they are taking their ass out of town. I mean we got guys so guero played in champions league one day. He was crying on the field and in twenty four hours later. He's being unveiled parcel. Which was a little I dunno bright. He's there he's been unveiled he is. He had a weird looking haircut. Look like he cut his own hair. Run the unveiling for her having. Why did he go there. Why did they is you so you know. He's not quite as old as you might think. What does he thirty two. Thirty two thirty two thirty. He's like i. Actually some at one of the podcast. Recently i was like i was thinking. He's like thirty five nope he's actually like right at the tail end of when when you can still get it done. He didn't really get it done for city this year and that was partially and injuries thing which is related to age usually. So i'm i've always said it had been saying this for months because they've been talking about him going to barcelona in know the it makes sense because messier like best friends and they want to keep messy more than anything in the world. I don't know if a guerra's the type of player that the at this age that's like a barcelona type player but he's like speaking of bars. I like there are other moves by now. Lem and eric that he garcia's so he was a personal kid and then he got caught up in the city system. Just never play like he just never saw the field and zoe right back to barcelona. Yes that makes sense. A lot of i think one elder this great. He's so gase so good so underrated. So yes i do agree that. That's that's a good play. We'll see i mean. Mostly i works out or slowing. It just feels like they're throwing pieces together. They don't know they have a grand plan. But whatever s a call. Another one carlo end-july this just happened day. Carlo ancelotti the third. I think it's the third straight coach from everton. The basically hasn't lived up to expectations and is basically failed his way upwards There was ronald koeman had failed from barcelona from everton and then he got hired as i think what dutch and You know the coach. Obviously roberto martinez failed. Essentially into failed is way to the belgian national team and now college i mean. He didn't fail. He had one of the best points per game of any coach at everton but for the talent they had to finish mid table. I mean that is absolutely disappointment and from there he disappointed every any gets the real madrid which was was just. I know he's you know he's been at real madrid. They know who he is. They know he's a known quantity. They're the obviously has a track record. That's pretty good so get. It was just a weird a weird move. I didn't see that one coming. I'll say you're under wound. That feel like if i was a real madrid fan who decides the day in there. I thought i saw that new show. That's got a little bit. Someone cooler better. I don't know of madrid. Seems like i know. He's a great coach. And i love. I mean you did great things for us but a little bit of a boar yes. Stability known commodity slightly war might be what madrid needs. Okay that's that's a good point you void which begs the question in those. Just do quickly worry things. He dons gonna end up. I think in national team after the euro's guess that underperforms wait to see way does he was gonna pay most okay. That's that's fair. i mean. I've i'm just.

With Milk Sales Up, Dairy Industry Revives Iconic Got Milk Campaign

"From, wondering I'm David Brown and this is business wars daily on this Thursday August twenty seventh something strange happened over the last few months we started drinking milk again think it might have had anything to do with pandemic for the last several years. It's felt like the dairy industry been singing swan songs milk sales fell thirteen percent from twenty ten to twenty eighteen according to CNN I one dairy. Then another collapsed under the weight of competition from plant based drinks soy almond, coconut, banana, Oat flax all. Those plants were out to get poor daisy the cow the dairy industry was so freaked out that it launched a pilot lawsuits against makers of those plant based drinks trying to forbid them from using the very word milk. You can't squeeze milk out of another grain they said but for the moment, at least dairy farmers are experiencing a bit of relief with. So many of us eating more meals at home, we're guzzling the white stuff again, it's long been true that milk drinkers tend to drink milk. Not at restaurants. So lockdowns have in fact, helped the dairy business cow's milk sales rose about twelve percent over last year for the twenty weeks ending. July eighteenth CNN reported your kid and mind mindlessly grabbing a swig from the carton added up to four and a half billion dollars in sales this spring, and that has spurred the dairy industry to revive an iconic ad campaign. Remember got milk. Vast company called it one of the most famous ad campaigns in history that campaign was launched in Nineteen ninety-three, its message, whatever you do don't run out of milk over time three hundred celebrities including Britney Spears Dennis Rodman Bill Clinton, and the simpsons all appeared sporting those milk mustaches. The ads became enormously popular by the end of the campaigns run in two thousand, fourteen, ninety percent of all adults were familiar with got milk to Huffington Post Contributor Gene Delvecchio but there was one a little problem. The ads didn't actually work over that same time milk sales declined steadily soda consumption bubbled over guess what those Soda Lovers used to drink you got it delvecchio a former AD industry executive argues the got milk ads were like bringing peace shooters to a gunfight, the gunfight being Pepsi and Coke Monster Marketing Budgets while the to soda makers battled each other milk lost but the dairy industry apparently believes their campaign was effective embracing Estonia the industry's marketing arm milk. PAP has revived the got milk campaign today's ads bear little resemblance to the Owens though. Sure there's still some celebrities Olympic gold medal swimmer Katie decades, viral tiktok video showing her perfectly balanced a glass of milk on her head while swimming a lap. That's certainly a turned heads but the bulk of today's campaign features, regular folks and a ton of user generated content milk drinkers were urged to do silly things with milk and boy did they respond people open gallons of milk with their toes jumped into kiddie pools filled with milk and cereal according to the trade paper? Agra. News will this generation's got milk ads do anything to keep the cow's milk train going if the wildly popular ad campaign of your didn't work well. Be Hard pressed to say that this one is a better peashooter. The dairy industry itself is making predictions. They say they're simply celebrating the quarantine induced sales boost. What is true however is that the competition from those plant based rivals is only getting. Over the same twenty weeks that saw a twelve percent rise in dairy milk sales oat milk sales went through the roof up two, hundred, fifty percent. Of course, oat milk sales are still tiny compared to cow's milk. They totalled only one, hundred, thirty, five, million dollars, but other signs point to the continued aggressive challenge from those gentle plant based alternatives. Oatley the. Leading oat milk maker recently attracted two hundred million dollars in investment funding from blackstone and Oprah it hopes to go public next year according to Forbes, and on Monday good Karma, a maker of flax milk bought itself back from bankrupt dean. Foods investors are Thurston lapping up all of these cream alternatives and no matter how beloved the Got Milk Gad's once were. All this competition puts a whole lot of pressure on twenty twenties version of the same campaign.

"Shucks Iverson. Many Americans ending July 4th without beaches, sports parades, fireworks because of so many cancellations and the pandemic, but at least they are off, which is not. "What to expect with baseball's return, and that's where I start okay. Baseball's back and you are what you are angry. It took this long fair. You're indifferent because you already hated it or I guess that's really in different. If you hate the game and you don't care, it's even coming back and you just made fun of it the whole time during this public display of not being able to figure out okay I. Get that one, too, but there's probably a lot of us is gonNA. Throw it on now. The problem is baseball should have been back before. Let's say what a week before the NBA. NBA gets to sing rolling and I don't know how much crossover there is between NBA and baseball fan I'd imagine there's probably more crossover between the NFL and the NBA Fan, but who cares whatever we got this thing back and I. Still Really like baseball and I always thought it was going to happen. There's a specific reason. Why was finally work out? No matter what version of what we have get to that and a little bit because there was a couple of reporters that we're actually seeing like as it's probably over probably doomed. Okay then it's definitely coming back now. Because remember the rules when you're on television, it sounds a lot better. If you're an opinion, person sports saying it's the death of baseball, and I'm now going to write the verbal obituary in. It's never coming back. WHOA, that's a good clip makes a really good video. Good sound bite. Let's play that on the radio. Show a little bit later today, or you could be on the desk and say. They'll probably figure it out, and that's not as exciting, but it's the accurate on the. I would say. It's the lane that I've been in this entire time, so let's take a close. Look at what we have. 'cause look out, folks I the Internet last night and I looked up some baseball stuff. We got sixty games normal playoffs. Thank God good on that a little bit later. But what is sixty games me? Baseball's weird. You can have bad teams. Put together a decent sixty games and could team go forty and twenty. Sure, but I think a Lotta. These teams are going to be right around five, hundred, thirty, five, twenty five, and then you're going link. Think how little! The discrepancy could be look at how the playoff chase ends now in September with the advancement of you know the different kind of playoff alignments they have and I don't like some of the extra game stuff, but it all has been really really exciting. The last few years of what we've seen in more than last five years of what we've gotten out of the baseball plaster incredible incredible. Scenes, finishes and all sorts of drama. In scares me a little bit that the product has been great in the postseason, and if not really helping the rest of the months, but if you look at and I did this I look back at some of the worst teams in baseball interlock. Place all right Toronto Toronto. At one point was twenty nine and fifty two, and then they went twenty, two and twenty over forty two game stretch. That's a sixty seven. When teen played two games over five hundred for Forty Games San Francisco. You Ask all right here. You Go last year twenty six and thirty eight at one point, and then ended up at fifty, five and fifty three, so they want on that Mastro. That's a forty four game stretch were San. Francisco played twenty nine. Nine and fifteen baseball they were a seventy seven and eighty-five team, but more folks I tried the best I could find from their stretches, fourteen and thirteen. That was an awful awful baseball team. Remember Seattle last year against smaller sample. They started the year thirteen and to remember although Seattle tweets they were twenty, five and thirty five, and that was a bad baseball team. How about this one? Miami was ten thirty one on May Fifteenth, then they stretched it to forty one in sixty three. That's a bad baseball team that from Miami. That's a bad baseball team. That from the middle of May to the end July played thirty one and thirty two baseball. That's crazy, and then you have Detroit. Who was actually eighteen and twenty, and if you forgot how many games Detroit one last year I don't blame you because I did to the Tigers in forty seven games and I couldn't find anything that was thirty and thirty over sixty game stretch, but over forty they were two games under five hundred, so we could have some really weird stuff. Now you could have a cy young winner be six and four. You could have with the second base being occupied an extra inning games. The unintended part of that is we could just have a walk fest, and all these extra things, but I'm not sitting here clamoring for. For more extra innings, even though I used to like it when I watch the Games, I can also understand that basically these managers now don't even WanNa. Play them because they'd rather not burn out there. They'd rather take the loss that day. Burn out their arms for an entire week. At least that's what they tell us. All the time is somebody hits four hundred. No, thank you by the way nobody's hit three fifty cents Josh Hamilton like ten years ago. We've had four years over the past four years. Excuse me, five hitters have hit twenty home runs over the first sixty games, so look at maybe twenty. Twenty being. You're leading home run number, and there's all sorts of other things how you're gonNA. Use Your roster with thirty, two twenty eight to twenty six. You'RE GONNA. Call up different players, and how you're gonNA use your

Here Are Details Of MLB's Reported Plan To Begin 2020 Season

"Start it with major league baseball. Because yesterday now we'll see it's interesting. They seem to be a little far apart on the number of games that they would like to play. We mentioned the. Game they want more. They want to say we want more money, but we're willing to play more games to go along. With hundred fourteen games be precise data gain from yesterday, hundred fourteen games deferred salaries in the event of a canceled postseason because of the weather. And the option for all players to opt out of a potential twenty twenty season, due to corona virus concerns that according to Jack Passing and others proposal I from the Union. It was the first from the Union I should say and is expected to be pretty much dismissed immediately, but they would run June thirtieth to October thirty first which I think. The owners! Want a hard stop on October first, so they threw out yesterday are. Hundred and fourteen games. Season today. There's rumors. That Major League baseball might try to play. Fifty Games Dan. Fifty that's that's my kind of baseball season. Sprint that's plan. That's where you can't say. It's a marathon, not a sprint and you just say it's a sprint can't say even Keel, either you lose three in a row your dodds over. Your out of your your mathematically eliminated, you'd better have a stopper in your rotation. That's what you're saying correct. You can't lose three in a row, so the exact number is still being considered, but the aim would be to return in July and get going so hundred and fourteen from yesterday off the original eighty, two from the owners, a long way from one hundred and fourteen to fifty bite, but a we but about the terms. The money we are we getting closer. This would be the one. The fifty gamer would fulfil the players pro rata desire the program. Martin okay. That's why it's being offered up now. Okay is that we feel like if I we could do the pro rated thing, we won't lose as much money. We could actually just prorate you and go fifty. We could pro rate you up to fifty, but we can't. It anymore expanded postseason. It's already been expanded I. Think they would still do the seven teams in easily. I've I thought they. Maybe it expanded even more for this year. If it's only a fifty game regular season, apparently, the small market teams in the NBA do want the NBA to include everybody because they want to as Mark Cuban said last week I think. Get the local TV dollars the revenue that they need from their TV deals to keep them afloat, so the NBA there people are trying to include everybody it sounds like. So who knows? What's the deadline I mean? We gotta get something by the end of this week we got two more weeks or what or in June I mean Laval told us last week. Was it last week the week before? that. It's GonNa have to be the first couple of weeks. June because if you want to start at the end of June. Or even ended July. You need to do your whatever spring training two point Oh that you're going to do right right, so I'm not sure I'm trying to queue up. A sound bite here Gimme a second. Because our guy was on I take this morning. PJ, flack may have heard of him. Coaches now? Are. Making statements all over the place. You can't go. A day on

Saints of Spain; David Suchet Footsteps of St. Paul; Michelangelo In Florence

"Whether you're looking at Michelangelo's magnificent statue of David or you get caught up in a ruckus crowd at a street festival in Spain or even if you just listen to the wind whisper. What life was once like among the sun bleached ruins of the Mediterranean? Your travels can lift your spirit in many ways. Hi I'm Rick Steves in just a bit. We'll take a closer look at the world. Michelangelo lived in influence. Five hundred years ago and actor. David Suchet tells us how he retraced the route that Saint Paul traveled through the eastern Roman Empire. Nearly two thousand years ago. Let's start the hour with a look at how people in Spain honor the lives of important figures from their past. There are actually hundreds of national and regional saints in Spain. And you'll find that many of them get a festival that brings their communities out into the streets to celebrate to explain the role of Saint in the culture of Spain. We're joined now by tour guides or hate Roman from Madrid and Francisco Gloria from pump. Lona or Hey in Francisco. Happy Easter Thank. You thank you so. Spain is a Catholic country in in the church is a huge part of the political and spiritual past. To what extent is the Catholic Church? Still a big part of Spanish society. Today it is. I mean now. The government that we have now is very conservative and they relates a political issues with the church. Not Everybody is happy about that but still part of it and also the most of the celebrations in Spain national holidays. They advocated saints. Lady's name names. I think a lot how. How does the naming of children work compared to the Catholic faith? I mean you're or hey your Cisco do they have any with your parents. Passion for Saints a Whole Mike. As many Ms Francis Xavier because your middle name is executive because for some frantic savior was born in my town so and he was the first Jesuit Right. He was one of the founders of Jesuits Yep okay main signatures which is a very common name. Ignatius and Francisco Xavier. That's a common name where you come from pump loan and actually my name is the ACLU into English degeorge and is the only saint in the Catholic Church actually wasn't a saint also warrior that killed the Dragon Saint George killing the Dragon. Yeah it wasn't saying actually but so there are a lot of festivals when you travel in and almost all of them seem to be related to the church. Talk about a couple of the the great festivals in the Saints Days. That are important in your life in your travels Francisco I am from component the running of the Bulls on what we celebrate. The death of Seinfeld mean so. It's like huge huge celebration. That week starts July six hundred ends July fourteenth saint for me and I. You wouldn't even know who saint for me unless you went to. The running of the Bulls and pump. Lana developed comes from employees. They don't even know who he is attacked because everybody wears the red Kerchief around their neck and when people go to the running of the Bulls they wear this red neckerchiefs symbolism planet. We are under two hundred thousand people. I didn't know we. We welcome one million people and everybody's wearing white unread and nobody knows why like. Excuse me you do get excuse me. I'M A tour guide. I want to explain to you why. You're wearing this red handkerchief. That was the first person that was baptized employees and they cut his head for the recent. So what we represent the white outfit Represents Holiness and the Redmond nights the blood coming out of his neck so he was an early Christian. Pump Loner who was beheaded. Yes he was. We hit it. We say that he was beheaded any Pamplona although history tells us that he was beheaded in France. But Hey ho hey. From Madrid what festivals would impact a traveler when that we should know about quite Madrid? Not Maniacs you say but there is one very close which is Toledo the Corpus Christi is the big the there in Corpus Christi in Toledo is and that's the the corporate the body the body of Christ that's correct. Yeah and that's the Big Day in Toledo and they do bring some things to parade around. And he's part of a could be the equivalent of the beaches. Pelton SPAIN LIKELY. You have here states them. They're very conservative in there. That's interesting because in the United States We've got a region called the Bible Belt in Spain. Is there a region that would be the Bible belt get could be the political? Be One of them if you go around. Let's say like half Mouche from Madrid to the West from Madrid to the West Toledo Arbella. Salunke that part of your Browning what do you? What is your image of being? We'll have to think that we had the Muslim heritage Muslim heritage started to come down of it from the north down. Thanks Community Santos on James. Drake has just for the historic context. The Muslims came in and took over Spain and Portugal in from the eighth century until fourteen. Ninety two a good part of Spain was ruled by Muslim overlords. And then for centuries there was the RECON keystone reconquering has finally fourteen ninety two. The last Muslim was pushed out of Granada and back into Africa. What I make the difference that the Community Santiago okay. The origin was by the coast and it was the beginning of the Spanish reconquista. So this is the Camino Santiago. This is the big pilgrimage trail that cuts across from France all the way across north Spain the major city in the north west of Spain Santiago de Compostela. They'll go and How what's the historical roots for this pilgrimage? Because thousands and thousands of people make this high out there still do it people at the beginning they did it by the coast so those kingdoms those ancient kingdoms there the realize that whatever was going there were no Muslims so th would they decided to push it south and south and south and south until the Camino we know today so I am from the north in the north we barely have any Muslim heritage. We were more Christine. Must time before. But if you go down to under Lucia there you find. Churches generally built upon a mosque. Correct and mosque was built upon a church than they destroyed. If you go to civilian you see them at Nickerson Tarver. A Cathedral Tower actually was the minaret of the old mosque. So there's this layering of history. And what's very poignant to me? Is We hear about people. Being beheaded today in this struggle of fanatic Islam and Christians and so on but if you go to a church in southern Spain it's very common to see a man on a horse with a big sword cutting off the heads of Muslims and at the feet of the Horse. There's six or eight heads of beheaded Muslims as correct. Lose this man that is son James. The son teams we're representing three ways bishop as more slayer the more slayer so his. His nickname was saint. James the slater the more killer. Well enter the Moore's for the Muslims. Yeah most of our lives and today's politically incorrect. So we're beginning to cover those heads on the floor seriously. Some of those old statues and paintings are getting with put flowers well enough so you hide them so you hide you see a guy on a white horse with a sore but every time a Christian is just so disgusted by a Muslim fanatic. That cut off one of his people's heads we've got to remember. This is nothing new in history Spanish. I consider myself Catholic. We've been the worst ever I mean. We've inquisition the request. We have expelled. The Jews I mean with excuse of religion with Don's much bad. The inquisition is Sort of gift of Spain to the rest of Europe. What gave yeah. I poisoned gift. Would you describe the The inquisition you see the palace don't you out l. escorial that's right correct. What is the inquisition? Mean to to church history It's a sad episode. I mean this might personal opinion. Very site I mean also gave us practical thing. But it's a very very sad history. Every time I talk to them to my travelers about inquisition unites ties with Catholic moral and they kept going on.

Who Is John Eisenberg? Trump Lawyer Moved Ukraine Transcript to Classified Server After Vindman Complained

"And today house democrats have released transcripts of the testimony given by former US s. ambassador to ukraine maria vich and former state department official michael mckinley we will be following that but meanwhile a top lawyer for the national security council counsel john eisenberg is a no show today for a scheduled deposition on capitol hill to find a subpoena an escalating the white house's legal battle with congressional democrats let's eisenberg is a key witness for the impeachment inquiry he reportedly was instrumental and locking down the transcript of president trump's july twenty fifth phone call with ukrainian union president by moving it to top secret server so let's learn more about who eisenberg is and his role in this whole saga tom hamburger is is an investigative political reporter for the washington post and tom last week alexander van men the top ukraine advisor at the white house testified that he listened in on that call where president trump asked the president of ukraine to investigate the biden's and vinson said he raised concerns to the white house's top national security lawyer earlier john eisenberg what was eisenberg's response according to your reporting so what we learned about colonel benjamin's testimony to the a house impeachment investigators is is this he was alarmed as he listened to president trump's call with ukraine's president on july twenty five so unnerved that he went immediately after listening to the call to see john eisenberg the white house legal adviser on national security parity to tell him that what the president did was wrong that it seemed to be violating US policy and seemed to be seeking a personal sola political favors from foreign leader he testified that he went to eisenberg's office because he was alarmed by what he had heard on the call and and the only response that he offered during the meeting right after the call was that the roughed transcript of the call the summary of the call should be placed in an unusual usual spot that is the highly classified top secret vault i'm usually reserved for documents that would reveal sources and methods for US intelligence awesome military operations not for presidential call transcripts in fact we're told it's unheard of or virtually unheard of for for such a call to be placed on a classified server like that so that was one step another was a couple of days after the conversation eisenberg approached vitamin again and said i'd like you not to talk to anybody about what we discussed and what you observed in the call again a by itself perhaps there's an innocuous explanation for this but in combination with a couple of other factors that we're talking about here it seemed seemed to some is though it was part of a pattern or could have been part of a pattern or an effort to conceal or berry the substance of the president's conversation with his counterpart in ukraine you also write that by the time vin men came to eisenberg and late july eisenberg was already familiar with concerns among white house awesome officials about the administration's attempts to pressure ukraine for political purposes what did he know and why is this important to note eisenberg was aware of concerns from the national security staff because a couple of weeks earlier on july ten presidents alinsky had sent a delegation of ukrainian indian officials to the white house to try to shore up relations with the US they couldn't figure out why it seemed there was a delay in getting face as to face meeting set up between the newly elected president and president trump and there was some concerns about whether legally mandated a military aid would be flowing to the ukraine and so they came to the white house these two emissaries end-july ten and had a meeting with the national security council staff but also with three other they're individuals one is a special envoy appointed by president trump mr samland another was energy secretary rick perry and the third was a special on on void to ukraine volcker and in the course of meeting with this group those three led by sandra fund seemed to be pushing a request for assistance in getting information that might be helpful to the president politically the conversation was a bit subtle but it so alarmed armed john bolton in this meeting that they had on july ten that he quickly called it to a close and then he later asked one of his associates the national security advisor sir for ukraine to report what was observed to legal office and so the the place that those bolton advisers went was once again john eisenberg so on july ten there was the first warning of an executive branch effort this time not involving the president personally but involving some of his top appointees to seemingly introduce a question of seeking political favors from the new ukrainian administration as a condition for getting a meeting meeting with president or getting needed aid has eisenberg or his lawyer responded to any of this eisenberg has so so far declined to comment and the white house has declined to comment the response that we have is really the response that is visible today on capitol hill which is where in the impeachment investigators hoped john eisenberg would be sitting to answer questions there will be an empty chair eisenberg is another of several figures at the top level of advisors to the president who are declining to respond to subpoenas and request testify in this impeachment inquiry and so he is one of these figures who is now part of this constitutional drama that we're witnessing between the demands of the legislative branch and the claims of special privilege by the white house in the office of the president and those other "Are seen hollow and calculated more like a political move then an actual true experience that you are feeling I think it's a little bit of both but mainly this elevated Kamal hair she got two million dollars in in campaign funds looks like she's not taking some of those numbers away from Joe Biden and it allows for the opportunity to go on the attack when the Joe Biden gap machine kicks into full gear as we're seeing it happen this weekend seeing the one poll that showed that ten ten point drop by Joe are there any numbers anywhere Michael that show I guess I guess if you want to say that Joe under performed any numbers anywhere showing who might have over people performed well there there's kind of a we tried it a lot of the polling is ready to give his so you you had a ten point drop from biting but did that go the direction of Kamal Harris did that start to go a different direction you know you're you're trying to see what these indicators are and it looks like I'm all ears picked up a pointer to Bernie Sanders picked up a point even though I don't know that he necessarily did anything there that was necessarily the gaining any momentum for him you know you seem to be yelling answers out they didn't have a relation to the question being asked but that's what Bernie does so it's a little tough to tell whether or not points were taken away from Joe and went to either one candidate or multiple other cat seems to be spread around but we are seeing you know that funding kick in that sometimes that's a better indicator as to where peoples support is going so you saw a little bit there for camallo we do know that in this last quarter for people to judge he raised twenty four point eight million dollars for just three times the amount yeah the last quarter so that might be a little movement going the direction as well but again it just seems to be indicating that while Joe Biden may be the front runner in some polls there isn't the excitement there right now for him as there was in the recent month or so the next democratic debate will be women will still be twenty people that's the plan right now is that the promotion that I've heard for twenty candidates two nights the end July here's the last two days of July we're supposed to have the next big batch there I guess maybe that will be the time we'll see those candidates over this the remaining part of this month here as we just started July figuring out if they're going to stick this out and make their way through or if this is going to be the drop off point of their debates don't go well the end of July but ended July right now the next point for the next set of debates San Antonio first news national correspondent Michael Bauer.

"He get lit up a little bit yesterday may say his name. Yeah. Something like measured. But I try really hard not high before situation arise. So it might be. Okay. When you fed four Ps suspensions, it's really high. It stops looking like an accident at that point. It really starts by the way dead. Kyle's here Kyle's all in on the Josh Gordon come back in case, you were looking for the one person in your life. That is ready forgive. Josh, gordon. Trust them again. It's he's right next to me. Because if I remember last year Kyle offered that he would live with Josh court. Part of table table. Yeah. You know? It'd be part of the group that watched him when when he had to be watched. But your which is scary thought, I'm I'm all in a two. I was glad to see that. They locked him in for one more year will you I know you love drafts on we have this many picks. I know you have a border. Really? I'm excited except that. I'm not excited because you, and I going to probably be on the phone during the draft screaming because check traded down again and ended up with guys we never heard of instead of guys that were hope we were hoping to get and. Yeah, no, you're gonna have a quarterback at some point that you've that you've honed in on as QB the future. Yeah. I'm excited for that. Evan decided which one they want you. On the pod they come on. And tell us who who your guy who you're backing. Yeah. I mean. Their room is out there, as you know, I'm not sure that they're gonna I can't see the patriots spending their first round pick on a quarterback for the few. Now. I think it'd be second third round third crazy that they actually tried to spend money in a couple of guys who turned them down. Like, they really did go after Adam Humphreys, offer them more than Tennessee gave them any went with Tennessee, which I thought was weird that was it was very it was very not not only confusing, but like did they come in late in the game from? Yeah. So why coming late in the game? You know, you need to receiver. I mean, he'd been rumored as a guy that the patriots liked and he liked the patriots. And suddenly the second team to go after him, and he's already made a commitment. And you know, he kept his word and kept his commitment. But it was very strange. My guess is that they're like when they traded for Brandin cooks two years ago. My guess is something like that is coming. I'm very very focused on the AJ green unsubstantiated. "You're listening to it's been a minute from NPR the show where we catch up on the week. That was I'm Sam Sanders here with two guests today. Amy Kaufman who covers film celebrity and pop culture at the LA times just back from Sundance overall thumbs up thumbs down, you know, a lot of critics were saying thumbs down. But I'm up because I'm a big documentary fan, and they're really good documentaries. This year also here with Karen Grigsby Bates who covers race and ethnicity and culture for NPR's coats which team you weren't at Sundance. But is not as. Week, which is fun. Yes. I didn't need a coat. Yeah. Yeah. So question for you. Both how excited are you for the Super Bowl? Okay. I'm excited for the commercials. Chance commercial rapper fired Doritos backstreet, boys. Okay. I might have to turn the justices incursion. I mean, I'm usually started just for the halftime show. And now. There. Okay, fine. So you guys are actually kind of a microcosm for all of LA. There's some data that indicates that in spite of our hometown team making the big game LA doesn't really care that much. There was a story this week that shows that more Angelenos watched the patriots beat the Kansas City Chiefs than actually watch the Rams beat the saints game hatred. Hating end-july knows that we're giving some love to cheap. Wait sam. I'll just when you I didn't even know the random the LA Rams are team. I just know the I was I should have known because I saw I painted the Randy's donuts. To the LA Rams color. Did. What are what's Elliott ramps? Words. I was thinking this morning. I was like, you know, what if the LA Rams win the Super Bowl? I'll go to the parade. If it's not too far from a house. It'll it'll go into the parade. He's not going to be able to miss the parade. I was going to downtown. I think it'll go through downtown anyway. So in spite of our general lack of interest in the NFL this season fun fact overall the ratings for the league were up. So I called a friend of the show Clinton Yates, he is a radio host for ESPN and a columnist for ESPN's the undefeated he covers the sports, and I said Clinton, let's talk about the NFL's season. So the last time I had you here we talked about the NFL's troubles. And I had to hear now after the NFL has had a few good weeks or months or even a good season. I mean the ratings for the league according to figures that they release last month for the last season for the previous season. They were up like five percent. Yeah. I mean, look by the time once the games come around people have forgotten about all that nonsense, and there's so many more, and I only say nonsense in the context of the deluge of storylines and information, not in terms of the importance of the topic. So a Colin Kaepernick, or, you know, a domestic violence circumstance once the games come around people typically watch. And so I'm not entirely surprised that it's back because of the stars that we have the patriots back on top the Kansas City Chiefs have this kid named Pat Mahomes who through fifty touchdown passes during the regular season, his father a guy. No, Pat Mahomes. It was a major league baseball player. So there's a fun story. You know as soon as. Gets anything. They can hook themselves onto. Yeah. People tend to come back to the television for the NFL in my opinion. Yeah. It does feel really interesting though, because to hear you allude to those plotlines and storylines. They're all still there. But it seemed like they went away. I'm talking about domestic violence players a traumatic brain injuries, take knee. All of those things are still issues league is grappling with. But they all seem to be things that we've kind of stopped talking about why a little bit. I would say that. Because a lot of these guys who are involved in things like that typically aren't necessarily on the best teams..
