Chelsea from Forever Alone?

"Meadow. I had somewhat recently been partnered up again matthew. My current husband and he came with a whole new group of people that included single men the decent single men for the first time in a long time kind of a lot of them. So i'm like surveying his friends. They're all hot. they're all interesting and one of them was named brian and he was am band with matthew and that band played in our basement every sunday. So one sunday just casually invite chelsea over. When i know the band is playing that a casualty. I'm just making great dinner. Which i never do and then i casually invite only chelsea brian to stay for dinner and then bam. They're dating they're together. I am the matchmaker of nobody streams brian when he and chelsea met he was recovering from alcohol addiction and he had been sober for a while and then he was not soper and the alcohol in their relationship into a throttle and as much as i wanted to be the world's best matchmaker it was not working. It was really hard on both of them. They loved each other but it was also so hard it was agonizing this tape from the end of that second episode I mean. I think it's hard because i i hear a lot of people will say like. Oh i just don't have time for that like i just wouldn't have any patients with that. That does seem to put the addiction into a category of it being irrational behavior on the addicts part and by that you mean a rational a rational rat irrational. Yeah because it is completely irrational. And i think that that's why people that don't suffer from addiction get so frustrated because we see whether it's you know an alcoholic in my case or you know anyone with any sort of addiction like how do you get yourself all the way to the liquor store and you know get the barrel get home and still you know like think it's a good idea but it's just it goes completely beyond reason and it's so frustrating to not be able to us extremely rational person. I would say like. Oh you're very rich like to like rationalize this you know We'll just don't right like the key is that you don't drink right the ki as it were that easy then. No one would have any problems if the key is just. Don't do it right like and it just seems like. Oh it's like some sort of self control issue but it really seems to go beyond that. In a way that i'd just will never be able to comprehend what are like what are you gonna do. I think that's like the million dollar question and that's what makes the situation so hard because there's just really no right or wrong answer like people say like do whatever makes you feel good follow. Whatever you know is going to make you feel good and it's like none of the decisions are going to make me feel good. None of this like i just feel like i'm stuck in this damned if you do damned if you don't what are your options right now I think my options are to just keep going and not change anything And just keep hoping everyday that it happens. That it's the last time or i leave him and or something like in between it's always something in between our choices in life and love are just never as clear as we need them to be not when they're in the moment right now. Brian chelsea have broken up. Some you're cheering. Some view are doing. Some of you are the personification of a motor. Khan shar guy or the emoji. Grimace smile which i believe was modeled after me because this is such an impossible situation in so many ways

Here's a first look at Apple's $549 AirPods Max headphones

"I wanna talk to you about the airpods max. There was many rumors this fall that these were coming and being mid december. It looked like maybe we're not gonna get it before. Two thousand twenty one but no early on tuesday morning apple announced and released the airpods max. They went up for sale. I think it was like eight thirty in the morning and to everyone's shock and awe and let's just talk about now five hundred and fifty dollar price tag for the airpods. Max i would love to have your initial thoughts not only on the price tag but on the name. Because i kind of wish. They went with studio because the rumored codename airpods studio because they're over the your headphones with the cups. Noise cancelling airpods max. I don't know it sounds a little funny. What do you think william. I did as she laughed when i saw the name but only because apple keeps used to keep everything secret and now everything seems to come out but they hit us with a new name. We weren't expecting and that did the same with the apple a. m water. It is like there's a naming department that can keep a secret. I agree studios san sense better so these headphones they're very expensive. They're five hundred and fifty dollars despite that they're basically sold out until march if you try to buy a pair now it'll say twelve to fourteen weeks shipping time so even despite the price very popular you can actually go and watch him hd. And i just actually have these. They did initial videos unboxing and some initial thoughts. I'll put those links in show notes as well just kind of a quick specs. These are over the ear cups headphones controls on these. It is all physical controls. There's a large digital crown on one of the earcups that you'll use to adjust volume or you can press it down for siri. And then there's also another button to go from transparency to noise cancelling mode so they have a lot of the features of the airpods pro. They have spatial audio. They can do dolby. Atmos and seven point. One surround virtually in the headphones. So that's all very cool but a couple of the noticeable omissions will say no power brick in the box so with your five hundred and fifty dollar headphones. You do not get a powerbook to charge you. Do get a cable. You get a usb c a lightening cable so you can charge it with one of the twenty usb c charging that apple will sell you but it also does not come with the cable to physically connect these headphones to an audio source. If you would like that you have to pay an additional thirty five dollars for a lightning. Two three and a half millimeter cable to plug into an audio source and again the fact that they went with lightning on instead of usb bbc. I'm not sure i feel about that. But those are the omissions and again on that price tag at least put the cable in there. I don't know that's just me. What do you feel wind. Packwood's and i agree with you. That seems wrong. I know we got loose. Packers have old ones. So i don't know how much use they would be i. It never occurred to me to think about a physical connection with this their wireless headphones release anything else. But actually yeah. If i am a musician pro use a full who. This is a bargain but a worthwhile cost. I'm likely to want to better connection wireless bluetooth so yeah on quite taken aback. Especially if you cross into that audio file realm and one of things. I'm going to do with it I did order a pair though becoming tuesday. So i'll be able to talk about him on next week's episode personally but i'm actually a classical music fan. I don't think i've ever share this with amish on the podcast. But i'm a classical trumpet player. That's my wife degree. yes i love. Actually listening to classical music. Believe it or not and so. I'm very curious to see how these sound. On some of those mozart requiems and brahms symphonies at to see the audio quality is really up to snuff. But for five hundred fifty dollars should sound amazing. You know per se. Obviously this is in comparison and in competition with headphones. Like the sony w.h. Xm fors which usually cost like three hundred. Three hundred and fifty dollars was like attuned dollar premium for these and the bose noise cancelling headphones seven hundred are very popular. Those are around three hundred and forty dollars. So you're getting two hundred to two hundred and fifty dollar premium to pay for these airpods. Max so i really hope have to imagine that the sound quality is excellent. But you're also paying for apple's features like the h. One chips the ability to the noise. Cancelling connect your devices seamlessly switch just like other airpods and airpods pro another cool feature to the cups. The ear cushions that are on the headphones are actually connect magnetically. And so if you want to replace the earcups for whatever reason they come off very easily and attach very easily as well and hd shows that had his video looks pretty satisfying and you can also get replacement ear cushions again. Not cheap but seventy bucks on apple you can actually order them now in the apple store and on their website but you can get replacement cushions for seventy dollars again in the future if you need them and you can mix and match colors. There's actually a cool chart you know if you will have to get the space gray headphones and put some blue cushions on it. You can be fancy like that if you'd like but again you're paying a premium for all these. I don't know. I'm curious to try them. But these don't tempt you at all as i once used the bose actions that you mentioned don. I was very impressed on. I do like us. I'm more of a malla guide. The mets on no. It doesn't tempt me. Except there is one thing this one specification you've just kind of lewd to skipped a very good. That is crucial. What color did you buy on. I won't with space gray because the size of these. I mean they're large. They're over the ear headphones. And i like to be discreet when i'm around other people the rare times that happens and so white white was tempting. But i don't have so much you know every other airpod is white and i didn't like the green or the pinkish red color. Blue was the only other one that tempted me. But i don't know. I just went discreet. I want black now. You wouldn't touch. That's what it is so next day. Jiang at a party somewhere. Nobody's gonna notice because she didn't have blue headphones. That's what i would have gone full blitz. Obviously the blue did look very nice. i was tempted. Also attempt to engrave these. I've actually never engraved an apple product. I don't know why i just have never done. It and i was very close to engraving these. But i had a moment of. I don't know what to put on them. And i know shipping. Times are gonna slip. So i just four went the engraving and just sorta without. But i'm curious william. Have you ever engraved an apple product. No because of always thoughts. And i'm gonna pass it on somebody else or might resell it to somewhere right. So it's been like having a set to somebody on their name. Just you break up with something. It feels wrong in a weird way. It feels like it's studies the the pristine finish of the device as well especially if you wanna resell it. That definitely makes it more difficult but I know you have tons of tattoos. You have sleeves don't you. Have you have tattoos all over please. I'm not illustrated unless you know what you said about coming up with something to say. I know whatever. I had written on me. I would change my mind magic instantly and want to me. I did work with a young writer. Who said she was aiming to have some text for every significant part of her life tattooed on and i wished to long life and much fatness so that you have room okay. Well staying on the grieving for a second. I saw that in addition to letters you can actually engrave emojis on apple products. Now you can choose emojis if you'd like. So here's my question to you william. If you could engrave any emoji apple device what emoji do you think you would choose. Would it be the winking smiley face sticking out the tongue or would it be money flying away. What do you think is the money involved here with page to do this. I give you twenty bucks. Yeah i need more need more. I need a lot more needs to pay for the hedge funds and then i feel that's nice cost parlance I'm i'm a writer. I can't bear emojis next. Particularly i had a message from a singer songwriter. I profoundly admire but it was all in emojis. And i have no idea what she was saying. It was just. I think it's gonna start communicating with you william. I'm gonna do all emojis from now on well good by sending emerges did not sending me pat. That's where you're going wrong. You sending the wrong listen. Listen we'll see when that when the next ipad comes out the battery life on my ipad. I don't know what's going on but it is I don't know. It's a little rough. When i edit podcast. It's great at any at any other time. So that new model comes out. I don't know we'll see you keep playing this long game gas lighting me. I'll just send it off without even thinking about it.

Think a coronavirus economic package is just around the corner? Not so fast.

"Headlines coming out of capitol hill. This week might have you think. Another round of much-needed coronavirus relief is just a few details away. After months of stalemate since the last relief significant bill was passed back in march. It looks like there is finally some momentum peel back the veneer just a little however and the reality reveals itself to be far more complicated. Let's go through the three options that have captured the imagination of lawmakers and advocates alike. Even more may eventually be thrown onto the negotiating table and elements of each of these may bleed into the others but let's not make this too messy at least not at first one. A bi partisan group of senators on tuesday unveiled a nine hundred and eight billion dollars proposal that looked to split the difference between house. Democrats two point four trillion dollar offer and senate republicans six hundred and fifty billion dollar offer. Part of the total cost would come from some of the five hundred billion dollars in unspent money from the last round of relief so the price tag is a little misleading. It's a stopgap measure that has growing support from rank and file lawmakers who are finding it more and more difficult to justify inaction in pursuit of the perfect. This proposal would stretch through the first fiscal quarter of calendar year. Twenty twenty one or until the end of march and cobble together one hundred and sixty billion dollars to fund a state and local governments that are running on fumes as tax revenue has dried up with the economic downturn. The measure also has more than three hundred billion dollars in loans and grants for small businesses. Twenty five billion dollars in relief for renters an extra three hundred dollars per week for unemployed americans it does not however include an extra twelve hundred dollar stimulus payment. That house speaker. Nancy pelosi and president. Donald trump both backed treasury secretary. Steven mnuchin said. He was reviewing the bipartisan proposal. The white house called it a nonstarter saying it. Plan to work with senate majority leader mitch. Mcconnell and house minority leader kevin mccarthy on targeted covid relief plan to pelosi and senate minority leader. Chuck schumer have their own democrats only outlined for a new offer. They haven't released details but it was sent over to mcconnell in a private letter on monday. The draft was meant to restart negotiations which have been on hold for weeks in most unhelpful. Move mcconnell announced the offers existence and further frustrated democrats who say republicans aren't negotiating in good faith. Democrats have insisted cash be included for state and local governments a major point of dispute for many republicans. Who say it's not washington's problem to fix local budgets. No total cost was attached. Three mcconnell circulated to republicans a new version of the gop plan that would presumably meet with white house approval notably it to did not include a cost meaning to was meant as a negotiating document. The latest incarnation includes small business. Cash a one month extension of base-level unemployment benefits that are set to end at the end of this month. For twelve million americans and legal protections against lawsuits for businesses that are open during the pandemic it notably lacks money for state and local governments. The latest also a plus up unemployment benefits that had been demanded by the white house in earlier drafts in short. Each of these is negotiating. Starting point not a workable idea even lawmakers were at the table for the creation of these ideas acknowledged. they're nowhere near final version. And when you're talking about deals that have perhaps twelve zeros at the end. There's a lot of wrangling left to be done. Meanwhile at least some officials are starting to talk again pelosi. Mnuchin had their first call since election day this week. The pair were the principal negotiators on a follow up deals through the summer until trump abruptly called off negotiations via tweet in october. He later demanded they return. But pelosi wasn't keen to once again. Be set up for failure by amir curiel president in the finals ros of campaign and decided to hold out for the election results. It turns out. Her hand is now weaker as house. Democrats lost seats. President elect joe biden has been in full contact with pelosi and schumer speaking to reporters in delaware on tuesday biden. Said he wants congress to act now. As a first step toward efforts he'd pick up when he takes office on january twentieth but he mcconnell have yet to speak since election day he added for his part. Mcconnell has yet to explicitly say biden is one although he has in roundabout ways suggested he understands who will be in the white house. Come january twenty first. that suggests talks aren't really as far along as some would hope as if this weren't tough enough the. Us government faces a do-or-die moment at the end of next week. The united states is set to run out of cash as the clock ticks past midnight on december eleventh and into december twelve that hard deadline ads and urgency to congress to do something. There is zero political appetite to shut down government in the middle of a pandemic heading into the end of year holiday season. Some lawmakers have talked about attaching corona virus. Relief package to the must pass spending bill in may be a way to get some forward movement but it also gives mcconnell added leverage to limit the size of the tacked on bill. Mcconnell controls the senate floor with an iron grip and ultimately has veto power over the entire agenda in the upper chamber if he says a limited pandemic relief measure is going on the omnibus. it's omnibus arrest for all practical purposes. So we're left with a string of calculations will progressives such a scaled back relief package until they can badger biden in the new year can conservatives stomach any of the red ink and if it does pass will trump sign perhaps the last significant piece of legislation of his one term presidency. The answer to each of those is at best a shruggy emoji without government funding forcing a vote. There's no guarantee mcconnell would bring another round of biden backed relief to the floor. In the new year conservatives will not be eager to give biden early win especially if it carries cash for struggling states and cities and trump seemingly has yet to accept. The movers are showing up at his door next month. It's the perfect cliffhanger for our president who spent so long as a reality show producer hence while the optimism coming off capitol hill. That a solution is in sight is perhaps misdirected.

"To kickoff. Finally after weeks of there being practically no news. We are excited. 'cause we've got a bunch of news talk about and i is project mainline Which is likely to get a new module and android twelve and get a big one at that art android runtime. A google engineer reveal the plan a comment within with an sp build This is the default runtime on android says two thousand fourteen us application and system services on android and basically translates an apps code into instructions and like other mainline modules. This would be a major component. That is then updateable via the play store and not requiring a full system update. So i mean this is one of those underlying under the hood. Things that like could fundamentally change the way android works which is fascinating. And if you're into this sort of stuff but then also in some other revolutionary android discoveries thanks to commit to the ao sp or the android open source project. There are plans to allow fonts and emojis to be updateable outside of full upgrade. Which is how it's handled now and note that these commits haven't been merged in yet so it's impossible to know whether this change will make its way into android twelve and it's probably say this is better late than never because he updating emojis wouldn't be something tied to a system update But here it is and more and more. We see things kind of disconnected from the system update from the full version update and being able to be updated via the play store and through kind of individual minor updates. Jason this i mean. Is it hyperbole to say this potentially changes a lot when it comes to android. It certainly moves in that direction. I mean i've loved the promise of main line and before it trouble of which is still active but mainlines the one that i get really excited about right now. The the potential of that You know for the last couple of years that it's existed my concern or my worry when i when i was first introduced was okay. This sounds great in theory. But yeah we'll see what really happens but year after year. It seems like google is really Placing a lot of effort in tackling these core fundamental aspects of the android operating system. That are underlying everything that that you do. And so it moves us closer to a world where android you know is updateable by and large most of these really major core components updateable through a an update on the play store. Instead of requiring an update. And that's kind of the promise of of mainline. And i just i love that. They're continuing to kind of build upon this. It really does did feel necessary if felt a little late because this is something that we've been complaining about for years the fact that you know. Updates are so reliant upon The or the the carriers everybody's got their hands in it and that all slows everything down this allows certain elements to speed up and to still be updated for people's phones to not be so so reliant upon those system updates because like we know very well you know a lot of. Oem's don't care to do the big system update so at least at least we're getting some of these updates somehow and i think art you know android runtime that's a. That's a pretty major component of android that hints. I hope anyways that hints at other major components being tackled in the future. Yeah i mean it seems like this. I must say disenfranchise. But that's not the right word but disengaging of these core components into the system. Update you know. Were really what then. You'll see when a new version is released. It is just the framework or the skeleton and the the components that go into that skeleton will be the ones that can be maintained from release to release Which when you think about it as much it's it's a it's a less bloated system. Update it's a less you know it's it's a then you have the the situation for more because the whole trend in The over the i mean how many years now maybe two or three years now has been iterative updates right the days of a massive like pretty much since mott wants material design role that i forget. What version has since that rollout has been of it has been a slow evolution versus a major. You know everything's different now. Meanwhile while everything everything is different now is a lot more fun to talk about. A slow in iterative is probably safer and leads to better development so this is probably smarter decisions so and then you know on the flip side of this emojis. Updateable without an update. Which i mean you know i. I could make jokes about that. Flows not here to defend emojis of course She probably would be if she were here. But still that's you know that's just another another aspect if that ends up being and and i'm actually this news doesn't necessarily point to that being updateable via main line but it certainly points to it being updateable the less updates which is the way it is now so one could. Maybe you know Imply that that's maybe the direction that is going whether it's using mainline or not. I still think that's a pretty pretty good move to be. Because i mean as we know emoji is is is changing often. You know there's often changes to it so having to wait for the update for people who love their emoji. That's going to be a big deal. Maybe they won't even notice. Actually but i would imagine they'd be happy that they have a new emoji right when it happens other news here. The snapdragon tech summit digital event is happening. it's a two day event at started today. and qualcomm is now teasing. Its next major flagship chipset so based on the brink convention you know a fifty five eight sixty five we would expect eight seventy five. No no no. They teased the eight. Eighty eight so it's unclear whether the eight hundred eighty eight is like more premium than the eight seventy five that they haven't announced yet that i don't even know exist. Just totally speculating. Or if eight eighty eight is kind of the replacement the new one All in we will find out about that You know as we go further but It includes a snapdragon x sixty five g modem so that of course supports millimeter. The Heart of the Matter with Dr. Hafiza Khan

"All Right Dr Khan thank you so much for taking the time to speak with me today. Welcome to the woman I've actually been wanting to have you on here for a while now Oh thank you for inviting me truly. I'd been following you for a while from the woman account but I feel like I really started taking in more of your post like win Kovic hit. All of us have become a little bit more inwardly thinking yes route. Ourselves in our house will yeah. Yeah. It's been amazing and you'd have a really incredible way of delivering information that I feel like even a non medical person could digest it but like you explain it in a way that it makes it so easy. Well I'm the only doctor in my family. Really. I at. So always have to explain everything to everybody my mom my sister has been in their words. So I, my husband's not a physician either so. So I'm used to explaining things to. So I always think how they explain this to my mother and my sister. They would be able to grasp it. So God so And also. You know I think that I love to teach. So I always wonder why people follow me because I'm not exactly sure has with the code you know most of what I do is cardiology related on meet related but you know I have been reading. So a Lotta Times something I'm like, Oh my God this is so interesting I have to tell everybody I love that. So the. Air Purifier. I Call I people need to know this are people need to so anything that thing with the heart is everything affects the heart rape stress air quality, Kovac, so really because. I kinda tie almost anything in because you know it will always have a downstream effect to the heart. That's really true. That's really true. Well I think it's such a gift that you have and I feel like if I ever were in need of your services, I would really want you to be my doctor in that because the just the way you presented I mean you're taking the time and you're reading all these different studies, which honestly makes my head hurt like trying to like analyze and take in different like research studies but the way you present it, it's like Oh my God. Okay. That makes sense in. You've just become a very trusted source for me of information. So you know part of the challenges. You know the instagram format is visual right? So I myself an experimental so there has to be a pitcher right rail. That's why I have the you know like a board or something 'cause now I need to be able to find my own post all where is fish oil post? Right yeah. Yeah. But then I, it's Kinda creative. How do I get the the main parts of the data? Visually interesting way that succinct. 'cause you use only the caption I don't know about you but like sometimes my is just cross like reading that. Yeah option Oh. Yeah. So The caption is the attention grabber. I've been playing around with a like a slide deck. It's almost like a slide show yet Some things I need to say, so it needs to be a chalk talk. Has after dry or and it's just me and my iphone. So. So part of it is is. It's create. It's creative for me right has I have what I want to say, how can I do it in a visually interesting way? Also to be succinct. 'cause you know doctors go on and on and on and lectures can be like on and on and on right yeah. Yeah How do you get a key point? Get it across in an interesting way people like Aha I got. Yes. I felt that way after your I mean you you broke down the hydroxy clear Quinn steady and like you're like your chalk talk, you know you're nearly everything I was like Oh my God I want to learn from you every day. Yeah. So that's the thing. So it's fun for me because I have to pivot to different formats right depending on what I WANNA do Whether it's the easy thing for me to do an inspirational pokes grab insure of my family, right something inspirational I'm done in like fifteen minutes, right? Right. But to an educational pulsed. I would already do the reading. So I'm already rigged article and I think, Oh, this is really interesting. Then breaking it apart, figuring out how to deliver what a cute little emoji. Duo Voice. So that's the fun. That's the creative and fun part to make. Take a while. So. Yeah, I know. It's part of the brain that I don't normally use when I teach follows you know for that during a dry board lecture with the facts, right? Right. So this involves visual creativity, which is for me using the other part of my brain which. Is Fun and interesting to

"And we're back. Thank you sponsor so surveys. Show the EGGPLANT as sex is particularly American thing although Canada UK and Australia are up there to There are a couple of theories. Ask to why and one of the main ones is here in the US. We really don't have a lot of familiarity with eggplant especially the logger thinner Japanese variety as opposed to the shorter squatter Italian type. Oh my God just saying these words whereas we associate corn with teeth and maybe wholesomeness dewey. I am bananas like American. You know you're in the Midwest and you've got the little corn on the COP thingies and you're eating it. Maybe that's just me. Maybe the maybe. I'm just not as imaginative and bananas with Awkward Sex Ed Classes which may sons and we don't. We didn't really have any cultural ideas. Attached to add plans others say that the reason Americans latched onto this down to the shape and the color which isn't exactly correct But is more important than yellow. Maybe are that's another argument. Goes and I've also heard arguments about the eggplants size. The banana doesn't suggest the bigness that the sender wants to suggest because we're all children were children. There's so many things so in twenty thirteen. It was officially recommended for innuendo purposes by Fred Benson. And this guy would know. He edited Emoji. Dick Emoji reimagining of her Melville's classic. Oh dear God that same year it was mentioned in a slide show by the complex about what emojis were best. Two years for sex thing. I'm really glad we have guidelines. Yeah we need those guidelines but I did find this slide show quite like it starts off with a warning that you make sure the girl or woman years texting is at least eighteen which yes but also had a lot of like if you're sexting two women at once how to get off twice without one of them knowing. I'm not opposed to consensual poly-amorous relationships are open relationships. That was just the vibe of trickery manipulation that turned me off. But Oh yeah that's bad. That's perhaps a conversation for another day. That two thousand fourteen. Jesse Hill Video. Play a huge part. In proliferating the eggplants reputation in this realm to be. Ob was an early adopter of eggplant Friday. That makes us early in Twenty fifteen. A CO author The Unocal's consortium sent out an email with the subject line. Sex Emoji to their public list serves to bring attention to the whole eggplant situation. And then I studied that same year from match dot com found a correlation between the sending of a Modi's and higher rates of sex among. It's almost fifty seven hundred single responds by margin about twenty percent for both men and women. Academics believed this might be because emojis do help. Clarify emotions and tones of digital interactions. Apparently frequent emoji uses are also twice as likely to get married. Oh is that what I've been doing wrong? Yeah it's your Emoji lack of us. That's definitely what it is Hashtag free. The eggplant has so far been unsuccessful. An eggplant Emoji vibrator was released in two thousand sixteen. So there's that At least two companies have come out of this whole thing to eggplant in the mail and Eggplant mail which both send eggplants in the mail as Joe Gifts have done something similar with potatoes and it was a huge hit. So it's a potato sexual to know well probably for some people but it's just like you're opening up a box and you think oh. What could be a potato potato? Okay yes yes So that's kind of the history of the Eggplant Emoji. There's some brief other things we WANNA touch on other Emoji News. I suppose is diverse emojis. Let's say and Hash tag free. The Nipple and Mississippi patients and breastfeeding mothers was accessible. Also however yeah a twenty fifteen steady on worldwide emoji. Us found that the US used more lgbtq plus emojis than anywhere else we also use more quote female oriented Emoji. And I think that's just well until recently now because there weren't that many but you can talk about that cement the The introduction of more diverse again in two thousand fifteen the first modifier codes for changing skin tones where emojis were introduced and mixed reviews for that. Yeah then in twenty twenty another release included things like gender-neutral Santa Claus Man in wedding dress women in Tuxedos and the transgender flag. This after twenty nineteen batch came with same sex couples and twenty seventeen push for non binary options and this after twenty sixteen push to have less sex is female EMOJIS BECAUSE NO JOKE. The only options for women at first were bride. Princess Flamenco Dancer and Playboy Bunny as compared to all the male emojis in occupations doing things the new female emojis ranged from scientists. Welders coders mechanics. Farmers business people and chefs on top of that female versions for a lot of the male emojis were introduced. And there's also a woman wearing a hit job so the introduction of new emoji is big business by the way big companies pay upwards of an annual eighteen thousand dollars to vote on them. And you've probably seen companies partition for them like Taco Bell and tacos come to mind. Yeah and about ninety percent of US use them and on facebook messenger five billion or sent a day so this stuff actually matters it really does and we should return return to the world of Emoji for a future episode and did want to say before we completely closed out. We back when Bridget and I were hosting together. We did an episode on exhibitionism. And why Dick Pixar thing so if you want a more serious look why women receive unsolicited Dick. Pics which is not good. Don't do it. You can check out. That episode would love again for Listeners. "From Saint Louis is going to get an Emoji made I mean the Unit Code Consortium is Apple Microsoft and twitter and facebook and all these big power tech companies in making these decisions. And so I I was on the verge of giving up Until I found some other people that had Proposed different plant EMOJI. There's a group called Emoji nation that had submitted proposals for onion and garlic And their their whole platform is you know. This is accessible Ordinary people can do this so that gave me a little bit of confidence. And then I started Digging into you sort of how to prove your case that what you think should be an Emoji should be Emoji and that is quite a lot of information that they want I think the proposal for the orchid was the orchid Emoji was eight to ten pages. Have you got through any of the hurdles yet? Have you got through sage? One is the orchid emoji. Happening I feel competent. But it is moving forward. That's my sort of tepid way of saying. I think it's going to happen so the first step in once you submit that proposal is it looked over by Something called the emoji subcommittee and they go through the proposals. They see if it has Merit Is it something that they think people will use? Are there multiple ways in which people could use the EMOJI that you're proposing and if they feel like you've got a solid proposal than they'll pass it up the chain to the the Unit Code Technical Committee the UT C and they meet a little less frequently but they're they're sort of the ones that are the final sign off? So the Arcade Emoji specifically made it through the emoji subcommittee. They actually had some revisions some things that they thought. I should add to make the proposal stronger than once. They approved it and it was looked over by by the ut see and the emoji subcommittee had recommended it for being added That's where it's at. My understanding is two years from submission of a proposal to getting an EMOJI. Is that's a fast-track timeline? So were a little less than a full year into this and to already be. This far along feels very promising. That's great well. I have to say when you're talking about the EMOJI meeting happening. I just have this mental image of lots of little. You know. You probably haven't seen the EMOJI movie. I have had the delight of watching the EMOJI movie with my children so now in my mind. It's like the Smiley face and the and all these different Modi's actually like emojis. Sitting there discussing it. I don't know why it's just my crazy world. I have also seen that movie with my children so I can picture what you're saying. I slept through quiet as I usually do. These kids movies but I do your vividly. Remember some some parts of the film. I guess this is the thing. Is that like anything to US using though Geez it made you seem like it. Just organically happens but obviously somebody has to be the gatekeeper for this stuff. What I'm always confused by. Though I guess this is in my own little blinkered cultural world that some of the emojis even plant related ones. I have no idea what they mean I mean. Do you know what the one with. The bamboo is all about like. It looks like a bamboo tower or something like three sort of opt off. Bamboo it It has cultural significance And it's it's sort of interesting to see different platforms will list that Emoji in different places so in some platforms The bamboo is is among the other plants and sort of the animals in nature category and in other on other platforms if it might be listed of under like travel and places or I don't remember exactly all of the categories but that's something that you know. I think the Unit Code Consortium is looking for in these proposals is not just Emoji isn't you? Would you would never just use that as a direct representation for bamboo. You know it having that extra meaning makes it more useful as an Emoji right and I guess in a way or the orchid surely that is a globally understood I icon ick plum flower that she does deserve a place in the emojis. I'm hoping that's also true of the leaf of monster. At the Swiss cheese plugged. Whatever you like to call it. The Split Leaf Philodendron or however. It's sometimes called in the. Us What do you think the chances of a Monster Relief Emoji proposal being successful with your experience of the process. I will say that I. I thought strongly enough of it that I started searching to see people. Were requesting it. And that's where I came across your Sort of mockup of what that could look like. And that's how this connection happened And I think that monsters are certainly having a moment They are very popular. Probably some of the most influential plants out there on social media and I think that works in its favor and I think that As long as you can position it well in terms of explaining what other meanings it might have for people or how people would use it. And that's really what the Unit Code Consortium is looking for. Is this a show? You're not just GONNA use that Emoji to directly wreck France. A monster relief every time. I've just wanted my monster relief. I mean I guess for me would be about sort of jokingly. Dac might be about luxury it might be about style. I need to do some more thinking about that because that's a really interesting point. There haven't really fully occurred to me. What would you be saying with a monster leaf? What was the all kid? Version of FAT. What kind of what did you say for that? Part of the proposal for the orchid. Well I had to dig a little deeper because it was sort of trying to figure out what it means to different people. And actually one of the suggestions that the Emoji subcommittee gave to me was that orchids are really popular in laze and specifically lays for graduation. So the ORC. Emoji has the potential to be used in a conversation about somebody say graduating and being from the Midwest we have orchid lays readily available to us so culturally. Which is something. I was unaware of any sorry stop. You ought to know what what is. Lay the garden of flour. Okay sorry yeah okay. I'm thinking of like L. A. Y. As opposed to L. E. Sorry that's just my again. My cultural blinkeredness coming through now. I knew away allay allay blindness to it and I also made the case that orchids are both very rare and very common. So the FALEN OPS. Which is what we based the. Emoji design off of is very common house plant It's a very common gift to give to people. And so it you hope that instantly recognisable as an orchid by being shaped like a failing APSIS but additionally what it does is it represents this huge family of flowering plant that isn't represented Emoji and some orchids are incredibly rare and so sort of by having that broader representation. You can use it when talking about discovering new orchids which is still something that happened today. People are still finding new workloads. Protecting orchids in the wild and for a lot of people again myself not included in this Being in very temperate midwest settings But orchids grow freely around people's houses in places like Florida and others that are more tropical places so they really more are more ever-present than just picking one up at the grocery store to put on your windowsill. We got to think about this in global terms of course because everyone everywhere has smartphones now is is using these emojis all kinds of ways. We probably can't even conceive so these. Give me hope that the monster Emoji may be doable. Cassidy is it possible for me to have a look at your or kid. I mean this sounds like somebody's going to be stealing your homework. But I'd love to have a look at your proposal just to get an idea. Even the actual layout things is they were set layout that you have to apply they have parameters so they have different sort of boxes. You need to check. They ask for search result. Numbers they ask you to sort of make those cases for multiple meanings multiple uses how it may be used in a sequence with other Emoji to create a complete thought and so all of that is laid out on the unit code website. But I will say for me that Looking at other proposals was what sort of really helped me figure out how to strengthen the orchid proposal.

"Podcast tonal this week were resurfacing one of our favorite episodes of all time all about emojis is timely not just because a whole new set of emojis are about to hit many people's phone soon but because the episode which was actually first recorded in two thousand fifteen is really an evergreen and broader conversation the design and much more we begin with the brief tour of different Emoji and how they came about where Emoji fit in the economy visual and social communication and hey that matters especially when it comes the machines reading emotions and finally we talk about the ambiguities and difficulties translating Emoji when it's not really meant to be which our guests are Fred Benenson who was the second employee at kickstarter and VP of their data he also famously kick started a project to translate Moby Dick Entirely the into Emoji and Jenny eight Lee former New York Times reporter who was a member and is now vice chair of the Unit Code Emoji subcommittee she I led the effort to get the tumbling emoji which is where we briefly start this conversation I wasn't a really big Emoji user in fact the first time I ever heard with Moju was when Fred started his kickstarter called Emoji Dick and I was like what the fuck mood this is before they showed up on our iphones like perky little yellow faces I was like what is like sounds something very bizarre I started I didn't even actually just be blunt I had a very hard time using emerging because I didn't quite understand how to even frankly use them I don't understand people send it to me if it's not the obvious heart you know etc but as I've been using it more I found myself serve expressing myself now and kind of quirky ways and I don't know if people really get it or not but ah out of it that's the fun of the brand new should me exchange between a friend of his WHO's dating a guy and he would only send her Emoji and she was like I just can't I can't handle the scrooge there exchange and it was hilarious translate it definitely see it being like sort of a irreconcilable differences between people in relation fast forward many many years Emoji showed up on our iphone and I'm taxing with my friend being Lou whose best known as the designer of the twitter fell well so we're texting back and forth about like dumplings and so I sent her a picture of the dumplings I'm making and then she texted me back knife and fork knife four yum yum yum yum yum and she goes wait apple doesn't have a dumpling Emoji I was like how bad be I was like because you're so so many obscure Japanese food emojis Emoji are from Japan like you have you know everything ranging from Roman to curry rice to Tempera to like the the The rice thing is on a stick two triangle rice bottle looks like it had a bikini wax also the the the fish cake which is the one with the purple were on it was like how could there not be dumplings right because Sasha universal food right 'cause there's like Perogie and Poland and Momo's and Cossa and empanadas like food from around the world I mean technically most is doubling Somoza Ravioli and I was like AAC okay Emoji or universal and then dumplings are universal how could there not be a dumpling emoji and just in my mind I would just like clearly whatever system in place has failed how do you solve a problem like the dumpling yeah out that Emoji are regulated by the Yuna Consortium which is a nonprofit organization Jason Mountainview California it now has twelve full voting members pay eighteen thousand dollars a year to set to vote on issues including like Gee and other other I in mountain view necessarily so those twelve nine are US multinational tech companies oracle IBM Google Yahoo Adobe facebook soft and semantic than of the other three full voting members one is a German software company sap another is the Chinese telecom company Hallway and the government of Oman that's a really interesting crews interesting Kerr and they have these quarterly meetings and then I just shop and they're you know very welcoming like you thank you we're coming what brings you here tell us about yourself if all like showing up at Church like a new church your new member they on unanimity well they're very excited there's some when young and like diverse it just randomly shown up and so I in that process learn how you get Emoji past and how they're regulated and so in January of two thousand sixteen we submitted a proposal for dumplings takeout box chopsticks and fortune cookies and got those all past this'll be new coat Hatton which means that the that's announced in June of two thousand seventeen into they'll actually hit your phones several months after that I was like wow billions of keyboard impacted by this as amazing were there other proposals submitted at the time constantly proposals there's this whole process that people like Jenny some of them make it through it's good useful bars actually for making sure quality gets to their credit the code consortium has an amazing list of emoji criteria we're they say okay here's what we're looking for Emoji it's gotTa have like you know kind of a unique meaning in that it's not covered by other stuff but it also should have like you know so many emba duty so it's not just like literally one thing it could be used in other contexts also there is one of the more interesting rules which is no celebrities daddy's our logos whoa the the Easter island head is kind of a violation that one but that's got its own story a couple years ago with a big update the Easter island had showed up in the back of the travel section one of Emoji and I was like what is that doing there who's traveling to Easter Island so often beneath these and it Kinda stuck in my mind and then I started using it in this kind of like culturally insensitive way to like reference some supernatural phenomenon. I didn't understand right like if I was in a coverage somebody and I was just completely flummoxed on that one Bermuda Triangle is just like who knows stone-faced other people use it for like still stoned right like there's lots of combination there the reason why it's in there is that there's a statue in downtown Tokyo I think it's a station that is called Moyo I which is a name of just like a proper noun that statue which was made ah artist that was a reference to originally Easter Island head so it turns out Japanese teenagers use this way point to meet each other and so that's how it ended up in Japanese cellphones and that's why I ended up in Emoji the artists used this inspiration of Easter island. The interesting twist is that when you look at it on the iphone it doesn't look anything like the stats chew in Tokyo at some point apple was like we're not gonNa make it like the Tokyo one we're GonNa do the original what android on the other hand there the more I am og looks like the took station one so fascinating I read a study is included in our newsletter months ago of someone comparing how emojis look on different plans worms and how it actually changes meeting you can actually think you're sending one thing and you get something else that's going to happen in any system that has standardization like you're gonNa try really hard to Mitch Oh hugh to the specification but you know people do their own implementations and things change in fact the whole reason why Emoji are in unit code was because send your friend a Emoji and their cell phone would would actually just render the incorrect one it could be so much worse than the fact that there is a standard means that you only get the basically depending on who their partner was locally they kind of inherited those generations of emojis spring sample on apple women with years is like two women dancing in kind of like let's party kind of way with their bunny ears whereas on android it's just the head shot of a woman with many years and it's referencing the slightly misogynist part of Japanese culture of Bunny woman which is itself a reference to the Playboy bunny and so they were cocktail waitresses working in nightclubs that made its way into the Japanese set came over to America like I think apple must've been let's make this a little more fun one of the easiest things actually chewed got emoji passes showing that a vendor uses it another arguments for completion. actually why chopsticks Scott Pass fairly easily because we had like blue orange so one of the big lobbying efforts has been to fillon orange for the case of the Apple Bunny ears and the Japanese women that was a case where there was an intentional translation translation to sort of obscure the cultural reference smartphones map technically the same Emoji but it's like rendered sort of interpreted differently they like Emoji that can have multiple meanings you can also just like Emoji to have one meaning but it really has to be really good one was going to be one meeting so for us the Chinese takeout box for example arguments we may we made is at its it's one it's Ni- conic shape it also symbolizes both entire cuisine which is Chinese food and also a means of eating which is delivered takeout right and so so in that one symbol you get a lot of sort of secondary meeting and with fortune cookies like it's technically a cookie but it also means like mysteries future in the unknown and like Zoellick's or primary secondary meaning one of the criteria for an Emoji to get past is that it has to have a certain element of ambiguity to it so yeah coach when I did Emoji dig it was more of an experiment around crowdsourcing Emoji itself like I wasn't like so much interested in making a formal case that you is that it's ambiguous and I've really come around to that thinking in this idea that the charm of sending Emoji is that it can be interpreted in a couple of different ways and and that's actually why we you and I will go further and say that a lot of people ask me why Emoji it becomes popular and I think it's tied to the fact that we now are just inundated with tax we live and a text culture right we we communicate via text our careers are run over email we read constantly everything we do is mediated through almost literal words and so- emoji represents this kind of reaction to that and the popularity of Moji I think is largely due to the fact that we need some other way of expressing herself overtaxed if the pipes are so mechanical like phones and machine you no longer have the nonverbal aspects of this is actually repricing sort of this human element of the glimmering your I like the cheeky the blush on your cheek or images that does that you think about the amount of signal you get from somebody's voice on an analog telephone and when he strip that out and all your communicating is like ll you don't actually know how sincere that laugh is or or that chuckle or whatever that person's trying to convey an so emoji gives us a much palate to convey this kind of like extra lake limbic meaning that we want to have in our in our communications but we can't because we're just were texting all the time so to baked on taxonomy of representation about using literal text let's talk about where Emoji fits we have emoticons which are like a colon an apprentice and that gives you a smiley face or like a semi colon and apprentice in that gives you a wink using punctuation using is almost coffin ASCII ish right those aren't as well from the earliest references the Americans go back to the nineteenth century as well where people were using colons dashes in parentheses to express like a wing it goes way back it's important to add and hieroglyphs and other humans have had this idea for the medium and the technology is kind of like incidental glad you about that because it's so important to me get caught up in technology time we'll technically technology includes like sticks and stones so that does go back in time but in the context of this machine web that we live in then we have emoticons as part of taxonomy and then we have Emoji but how would you guys define Emoji it's Japanese drawing language EMOJI I don't have to Japanese but the Chinese heard and say it's the it's the set of icons defined in unit code that represent objects and nouns and actions and the way that is Dander to unify all the graphical representation of different languages throughout the world and even non languages wings and all that kind of stuff emoji actually on emerging but there are code points assigned to Emoji which basically says you know when you when a computer sees this point they render it in a certain way but that that it's important to kind of represent around what's actually happening inside the computer because the emojis being sent a text if your computer support Utsa aid UDF sixteen that's just.

"Of the year feels very right that the Japanese would pioneer this. I don't know why that feels right like Hello. Kitty kitty has said so much to us over the years of her existence. Hello kitty, like the original emoji. Sure. Philly definitely was okay. Let's do this before we talk about our favorite emojis. Let's talk about the necessity of emojis. Because like I mentioned there. There is always a part of me. I remember originally when emojis kind of came on the scene. I was like this is dumb. Yeah. Not going to do. But I've changed obviously, I think a lot of it was there's always this idea that we're slowly creeping to Ideo Crecy of like, I can't articulate myself. Here's a picture instead. And I think there's some truth to that. But I do think in a way that I didn't expect there's a I think a lot of it is there's so much communication going on right now, you think about one hundred hundred years ago, people writing letters, and that was it. That's got now. Like, we are communicating ourselves in so many different ways. I think emojis are so necessary to help short form that shorthand that of like just in like DMZ respond to you say something, and you're like, I don't what I've said is true. I don't know how you're going to Turkey it it can tag on an emoji. You know, my meaning a little better than I'm actually articulate I do see emojis as get out of jail free card. Yeah. Like, okay. I said you're a whore. But I use a wink emoji. So, you know, I don't really mean that I did it with the smelling poo face a hor- too. So we're both horse. That's the twins. I would always with the twins. So I like that it gives another layer of especially for people like me who are often being you know, trying to be self deprecating where trying to be sarcastic. And I felt like it has it's been the way that sarcasm can translate into a text thread into a Twitter threat. And I don't I think that's actually been a really positive thing. Because I think with so much munition there's so much possibility of misinterpretation, right? And I think that really helps hedge against that. So why don't you? If you had like, do you have a collection of your favorite emojis? Are they different than the ones that you use most regularly there? There are some emojis that I really love just because like I love the play setting emoji. I also use it the most. Because it's how I communicate like play setting question Mark where we're going to eat. Okay. Because often like we're gonna right? I like to build my around like we're gonna eat, right. And then like what else happens after all the details. I also use a new emoji on the scene which just as a reminder, the Unika there's like a unit code committee who actually determines the universal language on computers and said they are the ones who actually deter there's emoji subcommittee who actually determines what gets to be. I know I kind of love it. And so when they add ginger last year, I was so excited because forever. I'd just been using that red math as forgot blins. Now, I can use the Japanese now I can use gingers as evil. So it's very helpful. You don't need an ogre. You can go right to the ginger boy with his weird creepy moustache. I think the one us the most it's a lot of it is in response to people as the head tilted to the side crying laughing. Yeah. Because. There's a lot of I have a lot. It's joyful place in my. Yeah. How are you communicating that is that like for you is that an LL or is that joy, how are you? Meaning when you like someone says something funny, and I'm like, I'm actually typing that was funny. But I'm also like doubling down that it was funny. Letting you know that I'm going. I've also my frequently used probably the most not curious. This makes sense. Actually, I've got spicy red pepper though. Not a lot of flavor town takes just so you know, that's how. Saying all kinds of crazy stuff..

"Once again, the most important story of the week emoji twelve point zero have been announced Fifty-nine new emojis seventy five if you clued gender variation two hundred thirty when you include all the skin tone options starting with the yawning Moshi. And then I don't know what we're going to characterize this emoji as it's a little biddy emoji. It's a fingers showing size just keep that away from the plano, and you'll be okay. I like this one hearing aid emoji. I don't know when I would use it though. I what I can't hear you. What I don't know. It's it's also not obvious. What it is. If you've never worn are seen known anybody with a hearing aid. It's not clear what's wrong with his ear there. What is she doing? There's a person waving her finger at you. Oh, I know. That's the virgin America. No smoking finger waves she staff. Oh, sorry. The hearing aid. Okay. So they're tapping their year. Okay. See that's just shows you how emojis are not immediately. But if you're used to sell, right? That would be I can't I don't I'm deaf. Okay. I get it. Sorry. Is that an seller is the universal sign. I don't know because the different sign light which is different science to. I don't know. I imagined that Jeremy at emoji pedia will exhilaration Elaine, and we'll have Jeremy on about the cultural background more people have differing abilities. Here's a static a limb an arm and leg people in chairs, and by the way, motorized and on motorized. Nice to have the distinction there. Here is somebody with a cane what's the deal with these people? I don't know they had their hair disabled. What is the I don't know. Here's somebody kneeling is that a yoga position. I don't sometimes I wonder what what is new about these. I don't get it. What's new about those people standing do? They never have that before. Now, they have people standing, and you can mix and match both genders and colors as they hold hands. Very very a wonderful inclusive. Standing kneeling standing and kneeling. Okay. Did we didn't have that before? No, okay. We've had holding hands for sometimes we have animals, we've got the ones that work better when they've placed next to other emojis like a campfire, that's it. And now we have for your delegation. The really the new icons and these are seeing eye dogs two different kinds or maybe a women with animals lenses service animal. One's a seeing eye dog. Okay. Got it a Flamingo on one leg. Okay. Now, you're going to have to help me with your animal Lord that a lemur or a Slav slot. That's an Seattle right yet. Any badger skunk? I know a waffle with butter butter by itself, something that's supposedly baked potatoes. But that's disgusting. I don't know. What that that was a coconut? Yeah. What is that? I don't know. Maybe it's a coconut. Maybe it's a baked potato is. That's bagel game layer, garlic. These are the official reference emojis from IMO the capital Saudi of. I don't think these are official. I think these are emoji pedia commissions and artists to do as references. I think I think and Utica just doesn't words right on the committee. But I couldn't consortium just does like those patent illustrations does like little outlines. And Jeremy Burj is the one who is your Germany's approaching widely known is that there is no reference emoji per se in terms of the art. There's kind of emoji fragmentation. The all of the major vendors are on the emoji committee. So I think they have all their away. They all have to do their own art and Jeremy pays an artist to to make the emoji pedia version because he knows people are interested in. So we won't see this until October probably on IOS and sometime several Android. Yeah. Really unhappy with the garlic. I think that the garlic. Jeremy, Jeremy, Jeremy, I'm sorry. But. Especially when you look that up is that a potato or coconut, what is that? There's an onion Andy's there's a juice box. I love this urban Metairie Cup, which will only be recognized in some South American countries. But I have a Paraguayan urban Metairie Cup. The looks just like that. I mean, no what's next to it Pearl in an oyster. Or lougee? I don't know. I know I look. Guy in a parachute. Tidy whitey's a safety coat. Awful. That's a philophical. Neither an eggplant recognize it out. Yeah. Without a pita. I don't know. That's a philophical or some Hamis..

"This is only an allusion of democracy, but as actually controlled by high place deletes, namely gene jailbreak and high five. So that's great. We. The epic tale of the emoji movie. So it's really quick, so so. Dan, okay. I was looking to see what the audience Mike was. So really quick looking to see what the audience was Dan. Okay. Let's say our final judgments, whether this was a good, bad movie, a bad bad movie or moving kinda like Elliott go. I would say this was a bad bed movie. You know what? I'll say. One thing. It might even be the bed because really there's a lot in this movie to dig through when you're watching. Like, what? Why is that happening? It is. There's nothing like the jokes in it or not particularly funny characters don't make sense. The logic of the world does not make sense. It's basically in eighty minute advertisement to children about how great phones are and especially branded apps like dropbox. You know what I mean? It's a super secure amp. But you know, it's great if dropbox were to say one a sponsor, our podcast I wouldn't be against. I wouldn't turn that down. It's a great app. It secure. Malware can't go in. You'd be chasing by Burma, whatever. It's pronounced. If you're being chased by a big antivirus robot hop inside a dropbox, it can't follow you. Although the weird thing is if anything, the antivirus robot was created by. That antivirus robot was given illegal, like an illegal power or something. Right? That's what it was goes. I guess I'm gonna say is go the emoji movie because I'm a sadist Stewart guys. This is a bad bad movie. The jokes aren't funny at all, and they're super lazy. And if you want to watch a good bad movie like this, if you wanted to watch a good bad, terribly animated movie focused on branded content, I direct you to food fight. It won't give you nightmares. It's crazy. I will say the animation. This movie is not so bad. I didn't. Design is not is not great. Everyone looks like emojis. I mean, the brightly colored movie. The animation is like the look of the movie is not the problem. Problem is the jokes and just like. Of the premise, it's a bad bad movie. They could not come up just title the movie, like emojis or something. The emoji movie. It feels like they didn't have a title for it, and the prince accidentally went out to the theaters before they could put a title on it. I thought it sounds like we've been clamoring for this all our lives. Like finally, the emoji movie..

"Isn't messed up. It's better than normal phone and it'll save us like. Like, you know what? Arnold Schwarzenegger isn't as deleting apps, racer. Nice. Nice. Deserve groans when the audience that people should be throwing flowers into Hosanna 's you, they should be taking you on their shoulders and parading you through the streets, like some sort of child God. Whose every utterance, both innocent and wise now like. Now I'm trying to think of something else and all the best like come up with was command. The best best tell you what, Dan, let's see a little bit of the sludge, slush mile that one. What? What went didn't make it to the to your lips if command. Jing go all away. You know what forget I asked for the worst and I got it. Okay. There's only so the because of course, Alex will see the emoji on his phone go, yeah, this is how to talk to Addie. I won't raise my phone. That's the way people think Tech's getting deleted, including jeans. Parents jailbreak is like, Jean, I believe in you and Jean takes time as his world is being destroyed. His parents having just been consigned to the trash heap of history. There memories to be raised when he is a raised from existence, takes a moment to remember all the good scenes we had in the movie as we flash back through things that maybe we forgot about since this movie is almost eighty minutes long. And finally, gene just goes, you know what? And he gets scanned as he does multiple facial expressions. It's a moving emoji that tells multiple facial expressions, and it goes through like bashful. Kissy face, I think you're cool, whatever. And out goes, check out some Oji course. The perfect emoji it says everything. He sends it to Addie at his response. That's one super cool emoji. What, Alex. I will go to the dance with you. The idea that she would buy the single emoji that just like cycles through emotions, if anything, why couldn't you have just if that was the answer to everything he could have just put all those emojis in a line together, express the same thing, what he what she's saying to him right then is if you feel like giving me a lifetime of divorce. Yeah, I second that emoji. Okay. That's the message right there in that scene. Anyway. Gene at that point again. Gazed or it is busy, vomiting. Imagine how happy you have. You're going to be when I mentioned this, that genes not dancing anymore. He's making a Moji move anyway. That's a more up-to-date. One. All right. Forget. I guess I'm the only one who listens to the radio. They drive in a car. So she goes the dance with him. He unplugged the phone in everything magically unbelieybze gene, save the day, all the emojis love him, and you know what we're done with hierarchies and tech stop. Now everyone's allowed the VIP section and they all dance that hot new dance emoji Stewart, give us a taste. All right. He's five and he's five different faces that tongue out. It was confused always happy. Now. Even with a bad back. Yeah, with a bad back. The last time we came to Stewart was so injured. He couldn't even join us. Now he's emoji Papa, and there's a little post credits scene that Stewart missed because he left the room at that point where we see that smiler in a neck brace. Now after having had a huge robot drop honor is in the loser's lounge, which gives the lie to high five statement earlier that now everyone's allowed in the VIP lounge. It seems that she's a political opponent as much like Plato's Republic..

'cause everybody's got to say something. I guess what he's got a heart. You guys. Heart heart emoji. It's got a heart and then it's got another heart, and then there's a yellow in a heart and a blue heart heart with an arrow through it and heart wrapped up like a box. There's a lot of hard emojis Carol, harder. yellow heart. Yup. Tonight we'll be listing emojis. What's your favorite? Let's just go around. Take out your phone and follow along. Let's shamrock. So yes, he wants to escape. James corden tells him of a Princess emoji that left and made it to the firewall or made through the firewall to the cloud. Yeah, left her family doesn't talk to her anymore. She left the community, so weird. Yeah, it's kind of like one of us, like orthodoxy thing going on man. Wow. The one of movie. Forget it. You're not gonna understand. About women leaving the docks community was the joke. Got it. Did they go to moving off. Did they go to another app. Because apps are like were world's into themselves. They are dude, we should get into that. How does this phone kids? Fuck storage just be through the roof. He's got so many apps. He's got a crackle up. No one has a crackle ad. No one dude, but you should have one though, man because you could be out and about like waiting for the bus and you're like, fuck I gotta watch Joe dirt to or. Tacked on. So I could watch it on this bus. I have so glad that I could watch a show about snatch for some reason. What there's a snack show. Oh, the move. I'm sorry. Yeah, I now realize I apologize. I just thought you were Jaffe filthy little early steam. It's three o'clock. No, it's the brunt show. I should've said the film snatch. There's a TV show. Starring that kid from the Harry Potter movies. Oh, that guy Rupert Grint. Dude, it's sad. Why are you just stay home and swim money? Yeah, that's other people anymore. There's a crackle app. So basically they leave their text. The text brings them to the the wallpaper, which is the space between spaces and this is when they can see sort of translucent into the other worlds that are coexisting with their own. Yeah, but we're not paying to use their names unless they're paying to be named right, but like but later. So of course they have to walk by Facebook and it's like a dark, blue cube, and he goes in and checks it out, and then it spits him back out with like the like thing. "So James corden high five brings gene. Can I say something? Yeah. Sorry, sorry. But just gross thing about this high five the bandit. Why is it have a band-aid almighty? God. Just thinking about it, they won't eat. They bleed what. Can get her. Apparently they have bones because the first shots is this. The the laughing Mody with a broken arm. It's like I could see the bone. Oh, you can't. You're nothing. I'm just looking at my emoji keyboard here and I'm wondering shit, these have bones. Why is this abo- g bleeding emoji hospital. That's a movie. Oh, that's how. Friends, dude, emoji hospital get the whole gang back together. George Clooney, Eric LaSalle. All that other people that were on our show. I never watched the second of that trick. Stewart and I play poop in this movie. Poop realizes he has cancer. And it's a very long process of him leaving. Obviously, yeah. Gene throat cancer smoked too many emoji cigarettes. I wanted to good emoji, but you won't ban. No secret emoji. That's right. David hog pig. No, I we like him out. We do Eric. I'm sorry, what? James corden break. TJ militia character down into the basement of the least used emojis. Yeah. Eggplant for some as plant is in the not youth one. Are you. Right. Yeah, right phone from a teenage boy, AAC plan does in the popular portrayed as a Dullart casanovas layer of town. He's got to be the number one like I was a Tinseltown. What does it stop. He'd be like the gigolo tech stop. He'd be like, Michael Jordan couldn't go to a restaurant. Oh my God. That's the plan emoji a wow, just the fact that fifteen year old kid is not going to use the eggplant emoji wake the fuck up screenwriter so and now I think this is where now this is, I'm trying to loop this back around to the tree with sunglasses on it because it is passed out on this couch doing who knows what opium den. I think it's dead. That's what they're doing. They're eating a bunch of takeout shoot up. Well, that's a good. Shooting up. Has jones. Did you say you're gonna pin the myth. Oh, man. Thank. That's sugar. There isn't a mod. There's a suitcase emoji eating a Chinese food emoji which what does, and it's small, it's small, it's base cannibal. That e. Fish cake emoji is eating the little pizzas, and we already met the big pizza. I mean, this is horrible. Yes. Now, because gene math fucked up though. These these Botts are after him to delete them and they break in and now James corden and teaching. They grab these opium addicts, use them as human shields. Oh, that's right. That's sunglasses on write them so that it looks like they have is, but those are long shut maybe forever. But But wait wait is. is in Bernie's with sent trade Hoster bodies in the. You're totally right. This is way more sinister movie than I realize. No, but so the sunglass emoji is on the tree amo- true emojis skin suits. Wow. And then the third emojis holding the two over itself for a disguise. This is some twisted shit doesn't for kids. Oh, you want to double down on that. The old folks home in text off. Emojis and what of them? I grabbed my code and. Oh, right. The emotive, the emoticons you call those guys, what's emotive con motor comes? I laughed at that Colin, Joe. Can you hear me down there? I laughed at that call and job at home. You have a colon. Yes, but that's not what I said. Okay. So the whole thing is like he gene wants to go where everybody knows his name, right? It's cheers. He wants to be himself. He wants to be popular all this shit. So the whole thing is take the dropbox tunnel, which I think is kind of like that rainbow bridge in Thor. Kind of like that shit. So it's that. And then if you can reach a firewall and get through it, then you're in the cloud and then you get reprogrammed would. Yeah. To make himself a true man, it's it's a little too close to conversion therapy that I'd like. You know what I mean? Like no, not in this movie. No, thank you know, but that's exactly what he wants to do. His dad..

"Yeah and like like your camera where is long as you have a phone that's legitimately registered to be able to use google play you'll be able to download it and install it i mean i would love to be able to select which type of mo gi c right next to the font or my default languages in in the the phone language and input settings just like something like slack has regan say use my emoji used the twitter version of a mojo you're use apple version or whatever they have you they give you a few options i would rather have something like that assured you can have samsung you know choose to do their default one but just like a font let me just go change that so i'm going to i'm gonna flip that because i think it's less important i think it's less important to specify the emoji that ic than for me to a special to specify the emoji that somebody else's so for example if i'm putting together a tweets much harder problem to fix it is a much harder problem but if i'm putting together a tweet and i use a specific emoji it's the emoji that i'm putting like an gone people to see then turn cracker yeah if i if somebody's on nougat on a samsung phone running nougat that emoji loses its effect or worse if they're running windows which millions and millions of people do they're going to see the worst possible version of that emoji and my message is getting maybe not lost and this may sound trivial to a lot of people but for like i think that lead in our culture now we don't even think about it i use emoji as a way to complement what i'm writing and it's a natural part of my discourse with people.

"Later you would get the birth of the emoji these are actual pictures things like a smiley face it's not a representation of a smiley face it's an actual smiley face and as the difference between an emoji and at a motor con they are not interchangeable a motaqawi are made up of individuals symbols that have been grouped together to make a better picture or a bigger picture i should say an emoji are actual images that have been crafted for the purpose of digital distribution now before i dive into this topic i want to give a shout out to an up and author and a researcher named vivian evans he's got an upcoming book titled the emoji code and mr evans publishers sent me an advance copy of this book so i used it is one of my primary research sources for this episode specifically about emoji became in very handy so i if you see the emoji code available i believe it goes on sale starting in august of this year it's very interesting it has a lot to do about emoji and about language and communication and psychology it's got a lot of different topics wrapped up in it not just the history and uh and and social use of emoji but really the psychological elements of language and communication and what separates a language from a code so check that out but the start with what exactly is an emoji while the word again is a combination of different words and motaqawi was a motion an icon now with emoji were talking about japanese words the e means picture and moji essentially means written character so picture written character altogether unlike a motaqawi which represent stuff by using common symbols these are actual designs little drawing small pictures of whatever it was you wanted to send so there is a difference there plenty of programs that today will automatically convert mod khan's into emoji so with a lot of different messaging systems or social media platforms if you were to do the colon closed parentheses instead of seeing that a motaqawi it will automatically converted into a smiley face emoji.
